Danube Delta

After passing through several countries and absorbing countless lesser waterways, the Danube empties into the Black Sea south of the Ukrainian border. The Danube Delta (Delta Dunării), included on Unesco’s World Heritage list, is one of Romania's leading attractions. At Tulcea, the river splits into three separate channels: the Chilia, Sulina and Sfântu Gheorghe arms, creating a constantly evolving 4187-sq-km wetland of marshes, floating reed islets and sandbars. The region provides sanctuary for 300 species of bird and 160 species of fish. Reed marshes cover 1563 sq km, constituting one of the largest single expanses of reed beds in the world. The delta is a haven for wildlife lovers, birdwatchers, fishers and anyone wanting to get away from it all for a few days. There are beautiful, secluded beaches at both Sulina and Sfântu Gheorghe, and the fish and seafood, particularly the fish soup, are the best in Romania.

Greetings Internet Stranger! I’m Stella Jane, author of the travel guide Get Lost , and welcome to the best Danube Delta Tour from Tulcea Romania. I have to admit that I had never even heard of Tulcea. And my father’s family is from Romania, so I generally am more familiar with Romanian geography than many Americans.

But it turns out that Tulcea (say it kind of like Tool-cha) is the perfect jumping off point for a beautiful Danube Delta tour from Tulcea. We will identify Very Rare Birds, eat some delicious bottom-feeding fish, and drink more schnapps then our livers can handle.

Danube Delta Tour From Tulcea

Morning: danube delta cruise.

There are a few things to do in Tulcea: a small museum or two, some monuments, a pleasant walk by the river. But the main reason anyone would want to spend 24 hours in Tulcea is to go on a Danube Delta river cruise.

If you’re passionate about bird watching, there are birds here that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. If you’re just passionate about kicking back and day drinking in a slow moving boat, you can absolutely find that here.

You’ll need to pay for a tour to really explore the region. I recommend this company, because their tour included a tour of a small local town and a very tasty local lunch for a small extra fee. That’s why I recommend their services.

You can book this tour easily for yourself by clicking here .

But if you want to use a different company, be my guest. Just don’t try to swim the Danube Delta yourself! Then you’ll probably drown and you’ll never get to see…

approximately top 5: danube delta tour from Tulcea

1) relax on the water

This is sometimes easier said than done. I was traveling with a group tour, and when we woke up that morning, it was raining so hard that the streets of Tulcea were flooded. Apparently this is not uncommon in the region.

Light rain won’t prevent the boats from going on, but the tour company needed to wait for the giant sheets of water flinging themselves down from the sky to stop before they could take us out on the water. I was fine because I bought a head-to-toe poncho for less than five dollars. (Romanian ponchos are apparently really cheap.)

But once the rain stopped, we could enjoy the peaceful sights of the abundant flora of the Danube Delta. There are over 1000 plant species in this area. Tragically, I am not a botanist, so I can’t tell you much more about the plants in my photos except that they are a lot of reeds and lily pads.

I can tell you that there was a British Royal Marine in my boat who kept blasting Taylor Swift music during the cruise. I knew he was trouble when he walked in.

danube delta tour from tulcea

One pleasant surprise on board the boat is that our driver kept offering us elderflower schnapps. This drink had a mild taste, which meant it was easy for our group to sample several shots during the 3 and a half hour tour.

Of course, all this schnapps-ing meant that some of us had to stop and use the facilities…but there aren’t any! Your only choice is for the driver to pull over on the closest Swamp Island and let you do your business behind some reeds.

It sounds horrifying, but I have to say that it was a lot cleaner than many a public toilet I have used. The only problem was that my cell phone fell out of my pocket in the swamp, so the whole group had to wait for me while I hunted it down. I felt humiliated, but I decided to shake it off.

The moral of this story is: if you’re going to use a Swamp Toilet, leave the cell phone at home.

danube delta tour from tulcea

The Danube Delta’s greatest glory is its birds, and indeed they are majestic. Some of the birds you can expect to see are the Heron, Egret, Ibis, and Pelican. I know that some readers out there would be able to identify each and every bird, but again I am not one of them.

The only thing my group could tell was whether a bird was a Pelican or Not a Pelican. So that’s what we would shout out every time you see a bird. It’s easy. The birds in the photo above are Not a Pelican…

danube delta tour from tulcea

And all of these birds are Pelican! It was pretty spectacular to see so many pelicans in one spot, and I have never even been bird watching before. But eventually the schnapps started to interfere with our Pelican/Not a Pelican skills.

danube delta tour from tulcea

Now it’s your turn! Pelican or Not a Pelican?

danube delta tour from tulcea

Finally we reached our destination, where we were presented with a traditional lunch. It was served with homemade Romanian wine, which you definitely need to try if you get the chance. Our first course was a local fish soup served with a thick, white garlic paste.

All of the fish used in the meal was catfish and carp fresh caught from the area. Some people don’t like the taste of catfish, but I promise it’s the best when it’s so recently dead.

The main course was fried fish with mamaliga, that famous Romanian cornmeal porridge. I appreciate that they gave us a healthy option and an unhealthy option for eating our fish. Very considerate of them.

5) walk in mila 23

As gorgeous as the Danube Delta is, we wouldn’t want to spend our entire Danube Delta Tour from Tulcea in a boat. It’s not good for the legs! That’s why it was pleasant to go on a stroll through the small Danube Delta village, Mila 23.

Are there 22 other Milas out there somewhere? Or is Mila 23 some sort of government experiment and there were 22 other failed Milas along the Danube Delta before the Romanians finally succeeded? No one would answer this very serious question.

Even though Mila 23 is small and mysterious, it’s quite interesting. I was surprised to see a Russian-looking Orthodox Church in Romania, but apparently most of the population of this town is ethnic Russians who settled in Romania. (They are known as Lipovans.)

danube delta tour from tulcea

Mila 23 is also known for being home to some of Romania’s best canoer. (Spell Check says that’s not a word, but then what do you call someone who canoes? Be logical, Spell Check!) The most famous is Ivan Patzaichin. But nobody cares because when you win four Olympic gold medals, every country wants to claim you as their very own canoeist.

24 Hour Tip

Those are all the secrets of this tour that I can share with you for now.

You can go ahead and book the tour by going here to enjoy this beautiful experience for yourself!

24 Hours: Danube Delta Tour From Tulcea

Afternoon: danube delta museum.

Once you get back on dry land, you’re probably going to want to get indoors. This is doubly true if the infamous Tulcea Rains have begun again. So let’s continue our 24 hours in Tulcea with the Danube Delta Museum .

Its official name is the Danube Delta Eco-Tourism Museum Center, but no one has the time for all that. It would be easier to just learn Romanian. I recommend this museum because it’s really a museum and an aquarium all rolled into one. So you can see the local fish much closer than you could on your river cruise.

I wish I could share with you all the information I learned on the museum’s multiple floors. But instead you’ll have to be satisfied with…

three fun facts: danube delta

danube delta tour from tulcea

1) can’t you tell me something about the birds????!!!!???

Wow! I didn’t know you were so passionate about birds, Internet Stranger! One of the birds you can find in the museum is a Mute Swan. We definitely didn’t see any of these on the river cruise because everyone in our boat would have been able to identify a swan, even the Taylor Swift Marine, I don’t care how much schnapps we had tasted.

Extra fun fact! I found this article in the New York Times about tourism in the Danube Delta back in the 1970s and those lucky ducklings did see a mute swan. That article was written so long ago, Romania was spelled Rumania.

danube delta tour from tulcea

One more fun fact! These are Pelicans. I have to admit I’m curious how they got so many stuffed animals in the museum. I hope they didn’t go out and hunt the birds and then stuff them. That would be a questionable practice for an Eco-Museum.

danube delta tour from tulcea

2) how do people live in the danube delta?

Glad you asked! As you can probably guess, they need fish to live. Of course they eat the fish, but they also sell the fish and related fish products. (Also how did they get those people in the museum?

I certainly hope the Danube Delta Museum isn’t going out there and killing and stuffing defenseless fishermen to put in their museum. That’s a good way to get an angry hook-handed man to chase you until you confess.)

danube delta tour from tulcea

One of the most valuable fish in the Danube Delta is the mighty sturgeon. It’s very profitable because of its delicious caviar. (When they say “black gold” in Eastern Europe, they’re talking caviar, not oil.) Unfortunately the sturgeon has been overfished because of its value. So I urge you to not go sturgeon fishing when you are in the Danube Delta.

danube delta tour from tulcea

Go for this beauty instead!

danube delta tour from tulcea

3) are all the fish in the aquarium local?

Not at all! My favorite fish were these perfectly round Chinese goldfish. Look at how cute and puffy they are! I really wanted to take one home, but then I remembered how much I used to cry as a kid when I’d win a goldfish at a fair and it would die after two weeks. So I don’t think my heart could take having such a cute pet goldfish.

danube delta tour from tulcea

PS. What’s uglier than a catfish? A dead white catfish. Pleasant nightmares!

Evening: Dinner at Ivan Pescar

Obviously we have not had enough fish on our Danube Delta Tour from Tulcea. That’s why we need to have dinner at Ivan Pescar , which basically means Ivan Fish. You can chomp down on the local seafood while enjoying the views of the Saint George branch of the Danube Delta.

We want to be eco-friendly, so we’ll not be having any of that sturgeon black gold. Instead, let’s enjoy an appetizer of the more sustainable pike roe. It tasted a lot like that Greek spread taramasalata: salty and rich.

danube delta tour from tulcea

24 hour treat: black sea snails

I loved my main course, Black Sea snails with garlic and olive oil on pastas. Ordinarily you’d serve the snails in their shell with garlic and olive oil. But what goes better with pasta than garlic and olive oil? So I say it makes perfect sense to put all those delicious things together.

These particular sea snails are actually from Asia originally and they’re a bit invasive in the Black Sea. So you’re actually doing the region a favor by eating them!

Where to Stay?

There aren’t a million hotel options in Tulcea, and because Tulcea needs tourism to live, most of the hotels in town are decent. But I recommend the Hotel Select . It’s very centrally located, the rooms are clean and of a good size, it’s affordable, and there’s a satisfying breakfast spread every morning.

In a small town like Tulcea that’s a little off the beaten track for most non-Romanian tourists, that’s all you need! It’s a great base for your Danube Delta tour from Tulcea.

A Complete Guide To The Danube Delta, Romania

Tucked away on the edge of eastern Romania, the Danube Delta is the ideal place to reconnect with nature, escape everything and reset your inner balance. Life is slow and untroubled, though you must see it with your eyes and experience everything the Danube Delta offers. Following this article, you’ll be able to put together an excellent itinerary.

Table of Contents

Things to Know Before Traveling to the Danube Delta

Facts about the danube delta.

The Danube River is the second-largest river in Europe and reaches nine countries until it meets the Black Sea in Romania, right after forming the second-largest Delta in Europe. The confluence point of the Danube Delta has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991 and a paradise for fish and birds.

There are more than 300 resident and migratory species of birds in the Danube Delta. The region has the third-largest biodiversity globally; more than 60% of the area is unspoiled by human touch.

This unique place covers more than 5,000 square kilometers and has three main channels: Sfantu Gheorghe(St George) in the south, Sulina in the middle and Chilia in the north.

One city, Sulina, and 28 villages in the Donau Delta are reached only by water.

Remember to purchase a visitor’s permit upon discovering the Delta by boat.

Best time to visit the Danube Delta

Spring is the best time to visit the Danube Delta if you want to see the water lilies blooming. It is the period when nature comes back to life and the birdwatching season starts intensively.

Summertime is perfect if you love the sun and the heat; however, that is when mosquitos are the most aggressive. Bring insect repellent and wear long sleeves. Wear a hat, sunglasses, and SPF protection, especially in summer.

Early autumn is excellent for birdwatching, taking boat trips, and discovering new places. The temperatures are dropping, making the exploration enjoyable.

Exploring the Danube Delta in the winter is something magical and a bucket list experience. Imagine frozen waters, trees covered in snow and quietness everywhere you look. Did you know that you can actually spot around 100 bird species around this time of the year? I remember seeing a photo of swans moving graciously on the frozen lakes and I can’t stop thinking that I need to return one day during winter. And the best part is that there are no mosquitoes to bother you. You simply need the right equipment: waterproof cold-weather clothes and a dose of adrenaline.

Remember, most hotels, restaurants, and activities run only from May to September.

How many days do I need in the Danube Delta?

As I mentioned earlier, the Danube Delta is the ideal place to reconnect with nature, escape everything, and reset your inner balance. Life is slow and untroubled, so you should consider spending at least three days there to get a first impression.

Five days allow you to get a glimpse of different places, appreciate nature, relax and cruise the channels. Consider spending two full days exploring various places so you can see as much as possible from this complete guide to the Danube Delta

How to visit the Danube Delta?

The easiest way to discover the Danube Delta is to rent a car . You can stop whenever you want, visit places along the route, try new activities, and have the freedom to change plans at the last minute. Getting places can be tricky, and the area takes life at a slower pace, but that is the beauty of the Danube Delta. With your own four wheels, you control your time and schedule. Depending on how many people are in your group, renting a car might even work out to be cheaper than other forms of transportation.  Check out the best rental deals HERE .

Although we love to travel independently, some places are better visited with a guided tour. I think the easiest way to get a glimpse of the Danube Delta with zero stress is to book a tour. You will be picked up from your location in Bucharest, and for the next two days,  you don’t have to worry about the itinerary. You’ll have the chance to visit Tulcea, the ancient port city on the Danube Delta, and enjoy a bird-watching or fishing boating trip. One of the best places to visit in Tulcea is the Danube Delta Museum, an exciting and informative site for adults and children. You will need no more than 2 hours to visit this small museum.

St. Nicholas Cathedral

St.Nicholas Cathedral is a beautiful and imposing monument built over a century in Byzantine style on the sites of older churches. It is worth a quick stop for a moment of silence.

Danube Promenade

It is not something to include in this complete guide to the Danube Delta, but if you’ve made it to Tulcea, head to the Danube Promenade. Go for a walk along the promenade and pass the old churches, the Heroes Monument, and the old buildings dating back to the communist era.

Getting from Tulcea to Sulina

Take the speed boat or ferry from Tulcea to Sulina, where the Danube River flows into the Black Sea. You can stay for a couple of hours in Sulina, spend some time in the sun, and return later in the afternoon. Or you can stay for more days in Sulina and take day trips into the Delta from there.

Tulcea – Sulina, by ferry, almost 4 hours. For reservations and departing hours, read more here .

taking the ferry from Tulcea to Sulina

A ferry is a great option for travel between Tulcea and Sulina, but it takes longer than the speed boat.

The small village of Crisan is 7 kilometers long, with only four guesthouses. It is the ideal place to relax and enjoy the silence and the views. Situated on the Sulina Branch, it can be reached only by water.

Due to its excellent location, you can spend a few nights in Crisan and go on day boat trips to explore Sulina and Sf. Gheorghe branches. Cross the Danube Delta’s lakes and canals and visit the small villages of Mila 23 and Caraorman.

going on a boat trip to Crisan in the Danube Delta

The Danube Delta joins the Black Sea at Sulina, Romania’s easternmost point. Once a famous meeting point for adventurers and traders, it is now a dozy city. With a population of less than 4.000, The port town can only be reached by water.

There is not much going on here, but you can choose Sulina as a base for day trips. Find a nice and cozy accommodation, explore the Danube Delta, lay in the sun at the Black Sea, and indulge in some traditional cuisine.

Don’t be shocked if you see a few cars in Sulina; most are used as a taxi, driving tourists between the beach and the promenade, which is a reasonably 2.5-kilometer ride.

Sulina’s Promenade

The speed boat takes you directly to Sulina’s promenade, a colorful and vibrant part of the town. You will find many day trip proposals along the promenade, so find one that suits you and go on an adventure. Or relax at one of the many terraces and spoil yourself with a traditional Romanian meal.

The Old Lighthouse

The old Lighthouse, built in 1870, was once situated right near the confluence of the Danube into the Black Sea. The building is a small museum now, far away from the river, proof of the vast land advance.

Sulina Cemetery

On the way to Sulina Beach, you will bump into Sulina Cemetery. Although an exciting place, the cemetery is in poor condition. It is a mix of cultures; that’s why you will find Orthodox, Catholic, Muslim, and Jewish funeral stones.

Sulina Beach

Once you get to the beach, you will find an organized area with lounges, umbrellas, beach bars, and restaurants. If you prefer a wild stretch of beach, walk further, and you will find an empty beach. What better way to relax than laying out in the sun with a good book in your hand, listening to the waves crashing, and watching the seagulls playing around?

an empty beach in Sulina in the Danube Delta

Sfantu Gheorghe (St. George)

The village of Sfantu Gheorghe, where the Danube river meets the Black Sea, is only accessible by boat. It is a fishing village with a population of almost 800 people. You can choose Sfantu Gheorghe as a base for your day trips in the Danube Delta, riding down the canals and exploring the sites.

Or spend a perfect holiday on an empty beach, with no one around you, only some begging seagulls. I would highly recommend staying at Green Village , a beautiful resort designed with attention to detail. If you ask me, Sfantu Gheorghe is a place you can’t miss from a complete guide to the Danube Delta.

The empty beach of Sfantu Gheorghe: such a beautiful place!

Murighiol is a beautiful small village with beautiful Slavic motifs on most houses. The name translates as “Violet Lake,” coming from the lovely reflection of Murighiol’s lake in the evening. Once a Turkish community, it is now a tourism hub of the Danube Delta.

While many choose Tulcea, Sulina, or Sfantu Gheorghe as a gateway to the Danube Delta, I highly recommend choosing Murighiol. The best part is that you can reach Murighiol by car or by boat. If you wish to kick almost everything from this guide to the Danube Delta, Murighiol is the place to start.

There is plenty of accommodation and plenty of boat trips to choose from. It is also connected to the Sfantu Gheorghe branch, canals, and lakes. From Murighiol, you can blend adventure and wildlife with relaxation and comfort.

a wide array of boats in Murighiol in the Danube Delta

Situated on a hill and close to Murighiol, the village of Uzlina was home to a Lipovan fishing community for more than 200 years. Nowadays, besides fishing, Lipovans also deal with tourism. You can enjoy the silence and explore the wonders of the Danube Delta from one of the fancy accommodations. Remember, Uzlina can only be reached by boat.

heading to Uzlina by boat

Home to the Olympic canoe champion Ivan Patzaichin, Mila 23 is one of the most visited villages in the Danube Delta. Reached only by boat, you can spend a couple of days at Mila 23 and take boat trips from here.

A visit to Mila 23 takes no more than one hour. But first, take a walk around the village and admire the colorful houses, alleys, old boats, and fishing nets. The first thing you’ll bump into as soon as you get out of the boat is an honor panel of the Olympic achievements of men and women born and raised in Mila 23.

After strolling around the village, relax at one of the terraces and enjoy a cold drink away from the burning sun.

an abandoned boat on the shore of Mila 23 in the Danube Delta

Caraorman, or “Black Forest,” is an old fishermen’s village, also reachable by boat. Ceausescu planned to build a glass company on this sandy establishment, but this never occurred after the revolution in 1989. So, instead, you will witness abandoned residential buildings constructed for the employees.

Now, the only inhabitants of the buildings are the donkeys, who go upstairs searching for coolness in the summer months. Don’t be afraid of them; they will pose in your selfies in exchange for some treats. Don’t worry: you won’t miss the donkeys! They will be greeting you as soon as you disembark the boat.

If your time allows you, you can tour the Caraorman Forest. The four-wheel drive must be prearranged in advance, so let your boatman or accommodation know. In the forest, you can spot 400-year-old oaks that are growing from sand.

Letea Forest

One of the best things you can’t miss from a complete guide to the Danube Delta is a trip to Padurea Letea. Dating back to 1938, It is the oldest nature reserve in the country. Completely underwater once, now Letea Forest is Europe’s northernmost subtropical forest. It is one of the few places in Europe where you can witness wild horses.

The small town of Babadag can be reached by car. There is not much going on, but you can incorporate it into your itinerary if you have plenty of time.

Mosque “Gazi Ali Paşa”

The memorial was built in 1484 in honor of Sari Saltuk Baba Dede, the Babadag town’s founder. Around the 12 century, Sari Saltuk asked permission from the Emperor to settle in the area together with the 10,000 Turkish families he was leading.

Accessible by car, The old village of Dobrudja is the place to be if you want to get away from everything and my favorite place from this complete guide to the Danube Delta.

Enisala Safari Village

Enisala Safari Village is a beautiful and quiet place to indulge in the beauty of the Danube Delta. if you want a Dobudjan country experience, that’s the place to be.

We spent a few nights at Enisala Safari Village, a place where we could reconnect to nature. We woke up early in the rooster crow and enjoyed a delicious homemade breakfast and a coffee with a fortress view. What we loved the most here were the locals running this accommodation: always kind, with a smile on their faces, ready to help us, give bits of advice and make us feel at home!

Enisala Homestead Museum

If you want to learn more about the Dobrudjan country life, pay a visit to the Enisala Homestead Museum. The beautiful small museum includes a house with two rooms, a porch, and a few annexes for animals, utensils, and a kitchen. You will love the blue color of the facade and the traditional Danube Delta reed thatched roof.

Opening Hours: 10:00 – 18:00, closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Enisala Fortress

The medieval fortress of Enisala was built between the 13th and 14th centuries on a hill at an altitude of 116 meters. The fort played a commercial and political role, being one of the Black Sea’s best Genovese communities.

It’s worth a visit for its position on top of the hill, which offers lovely views over the valley, Babadag town, and Razim Lake.

TIP. For the best sunset in this complete guide to the Danube Delta, head to Enisala Fortress, as the panorama around this time of the day is gorgeous.

Opening Hours: 09:00 – 20:00

Address: 2 kilometers outside the village. You can’t miss it since you will spot it from a distance.

Enisala Fortress in Danube Delta, Romania

The nearby Razim Lake, named after a Cossack leader, is the largest in the country, with a surface area of 415 square kilometers. It has a maximum measurement of 3,5 meters and small depths of 1,5 – 2 meters. The lake is an essential sweet water reservoir for irrigation and fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. A visit to the lake and the nearby area is something you shouldn’t skip from your complete guide to the Danube Delta.

lonely boat on Lake Razim, Romania

The beautiful village on Razim Lake is another excellent option when it comes to experiencing the Dobrudjan lifestyle. The place is quiet, laid down, easy to reach by car, and still far from the unleased world. Walk around the sleepy village and cherish the houses painted in blue.

lovers bridge in Sarichioi, Romania

Once here, head to the lakeshore and admire the typical small wooden boats called “Lotca.” Take a moment to indulge in the beauty of the place before walking to the nearby Russian Orthodox church. You will be amazed by the gold domes and the blue exterior, which is very different from other churches in Romania. The village is home to a large community of Lipovans, so if you want to admire their costumes, head to the church for the Sunday morning service.

If you want to stay in Sarichioi, I highly recommend Casa Filip , which is a few steps from Lake Razim. For a memorable and authentic stay, it is definitely a go-to!

Gura Portitei

Another hidden gem of the Danube Delta is the Gura Portitei village, where the Danube meets the Black Sea. It’s a little piece of heaven, great for relaxation, sunbathing, and taking long walks on the shore. Is one of my favorite places from this complete guide to the Danube Delta.

To reach Gura Portitei, you’ll have to drive to the small village of Jurilovca. From here, embark on a speed boat, and in no more than 30 minutes, you will reach this beautiful place on earth.

Note . Prices for the speed boat at Jurilovca tend to be lower when booked in advance. Ask your host to assist you with booking one. We booked in advance and paid 60 Ron for a return ticket/person. Otherwise, a boatman will approach you, who will charge you more for a return ticket/person. The difference is not huge, so don’t go crazy if you can’t schedule it before. Another thing to keep in mind: you’ll have to let your boatman know the return hour. In case you change your mind about the return hour, ask for his phone number and call him one hour before the scheduled time.

Once you get to Gura Portitei, you’ll bump into the restaurant area. Head to the beach and leave behind the organized beach area.

Overlooking the sea, take it to the right, leave the tent area behind and walk a little bit further. You’ll have an empty beach all to yourselves. Relax, lay in the sun, swim, and do nothing! You will definitely forget about everything here. If you get hungry, return to the restaurant and have a delicious traditional fish dish.

The Best Things to Do in the Danube Delta

Taking boat rides in the danube delta.

The number one purpose for visiting the Danube Delta is to take at least one boat tour. You can arrange it through your accommodation, search online and try to find a private guide, or head to the harbor and find a boatman.

The boat will take you through narrow channels and many lakes, and you’ll have the chance to get a glimpse of what this part of the world has to offer. Bring your binoculars and discover life in its most beautiful form.

We arranged it through our accommodation, which I think is the best option, but finding someone willing to take you on a required route is hard to find. We had some struggles with our boatman at first, but as soon as he realized what we were looking for, everything went perfectly. As we came prepared with a map, we could explain what we would like to see and where we would like to go. With some suggestions from his side, we planned two beautiful day trips in the Danube Delta.

Note . We used Murighiol as a starting point for our two-day boat trips. Each boat trip took almost 10 hours; as a group of four, we paid €250 for the boat. It might sound expensive, but it was all worthwhile as we discovered many beautiful hidden gems and covered more than 150km in almost 10 hours per day.

Fishing in the Danube Delta

The second purpose of visiting the Danube Delta is fishing, which is practiced all year round (except the 60-day prohibition period). The Danube Delta is home to more than 160 species of fresh and saltwater fishes. There are 30 areas where fishing is allowed in the Danube Delta, and the best places are the Crisan Channel, Vatafu Channel, Olguta Channel, and Fortuna Lake.

Touring a winery while in the Daube Delta area

No visit to the Danube Delta is complete without touring one of the few wineries of the region: Macin, Niculitel, or La Sapata. The Dobrudja region is characterized by a lot of sunshine and low rainfall. Try some autochthonous wine varieties such as Fetească Alba, Feteasca Neagra, or Feteasca Regala.

Hiking the Macin Mountains

Hiking the oldest mountains in Romania, a mix of forest and grassland, should be something you can’t miss from this complete guide to the Danube Delta. You will be impressed by a large number of flowers and medicinal plants. While roaming around, you might bump into some turtles, a common thing in Macin Mountains.

Discovering the Community of Lippovan Russians

Lippovan Russians are descendants of the main Russian Orthodox Church, fled from religious persecution in the 18th century, and settled in Dobrudja and Eastern Muntenia.

If you want to meet them and see their colorful traditional costumes, head to the church for the Sunday morning service.

On our last night at Enisala Village, our host surprised us by inviting some Lipovan Russians from Sarichioi to entertain us. It was a pleasant surprise since we had never listened to this kind of music.

A Complete Guide to The Danube Delta – Our Itinerary

Day 1. touring enisala, sarichioi and babadag.

We woke up late on our first day in the Danube Delta as the weather didn’t seem promising. Our base camp was Enisala Safari Village, a beautiful, quiet place. After pampering ourselves with a delicious homemade breakfast, we wrote down some ideas. With the help of a good cup of coffee, the four of us made a pretty good plan for the days to come.

We started our day with a visit to the  Enisala Fortress  and enjoyed the views from above.

Another highlight of Enisala was Enisala Homestead Musem , a real surprise as we didn’t expect to see so many exhibits.

For lunch, we headed to Babadag. The town doesn’t offer much, but a good meal was more than welcome. We made a quick stop at the Mosque “Gazi Ali Paşa” and  “Sari Saltuk” memorial.

After that, we drove to  Sarichioi and spent some time on the shore of Razim Lake.

We walked a little bit through the village, visited the nearby church, and got a sneak peek inside the  “Casa Filip” homestay. Although not a place to visit, we got permission to get inside and see the interior. We even got up in the tower to snap a pic of the village from above.

We ended our first day embraced by silence and washing down a delicious fish and “mamaliga” dish accompanied by a glass of red wine of Dobrudja, witnessing the most beautiful sunset!

Day 2. Boat Trip: Murighiol – Uzlina – Isac Lake – Litcov Chanel -Ciamurlia Chanel – Crisan – Sulina Branch – Sulina – Murighiol

We woke up early this morning, and the host was kind enough to pack some sandwiches for us. After a 45-minute drive, we reached Murighiol, where we met our boatman. After a quick brainstorming session, we left the shore soon after. We spent the day on the boat looking around, admiring nature, birdwatching, exclaiming every time we saw cormorants, pelicans, egrets, swans, bitterns, and many more.

We spotted many pelicans on Lake Isac and cruised through the Danube Delta channels until we reached the Sulina Branch and, last, Sulina village. After so many hours spent on the boat, the walk to the beach was more than welcome. We had a delicious lunch at one of the terraces along the promenade. After the little retrain, we got to the boat and returned from Sulina straight to Murighiol.

Day 3. Leisure Time at Gura Portitei

Our third day was a day spent at the beach. We prearranged a boat to take us to Gura Portitei from Jurilovca in the morning, and in no more than 30 minutes, we reached the shore. We left behind the assigned area for umbrellas and lounges, passed by the few tents, and found a secluded spot only for the four of us. It was truly incredible to find a beautiful private beach away from everything. We picked up shelves, swam, and relaxed all day long. Before our embarking time, we pampered ourselves with a delicious fish meal and a cold drink.

Once at Enisala, we hiked to Ensiala Fortress to witness the sunset over the valley.

Day 4. Boat Trip: Murighiol – Isac Lake – Obretinu Mic Lake – Crisan – Dunarea Veche – Mila 23 – Caraorman Chanel – Caraorman – Puiu Lake – Erenciuc Lake – Caraorman Chanel – Caraorman – Sfantu Gheorghe – Sfantu Gheorghe Branch – Murighiol

We woke up early once again and drove to Murighiol to meet our boatman. This day was sunnier and warmer, so we couldn’t wait to navigate different channels, see new places, and recognize more birds.

The boatman guided the boat through many narrow channels and passed various lakes, and we had the chance to see many pelicans, swans, marsh harriers, and many more.

We toured Mila 23 and embraced the beauty of the village. After that, we visited Caraorman village and took plenty of photos with the donkeys.

Our last stop was at Sfantu Gheorghe village, the oldest inhabited area in the Danube Delta. The beach was mostly deserted, so we had a beach all to ourselves.

Day 5. Visiting Tulcea and spending some time at the beach in Sulina

On our fifth day, we decided to drive to Tulcea and spend some time here. The town didn’t have much to offer, but still enough to cover a few hours of our spare time. After that, we embarked on a speed boat to Sulina, where we spent some leisure time at the beach.

Planning a trip to Romania?

Secure your travel insurance for your trip

We never leave home without travel insurance designed to cover our expenses if something goes wrong. If you’re still on the lookout for travel insurance for your trip to Romania, I highly recommend HEYMONDO , a trusted insurance provider for leisure and business trips, backpackers, long-term travelers, and digital nomads. Their travel insurance protects against theft, flight delays, injury, illness, cancellations and much more.

Get an eSIM before the trip

Because phones have become our most important devices, it’s necessary to have a data connection as soon as you step foot in a different country. Your home data plan might only work if you paid for a much more expensive package, finding wifi connections in airports or train stations might be tricky, and seeking a local store to buy a SIM card might be exhausting. Forget all of that! You just purchase an e-SIM, install it on your phone, and activate the plan when you’re ready to use it. Getting out of the plane and instantly connecting to data was a game changer for me. I didn’t have to waste time standing in line to get a local SIM card or finding a wifi connection to book a taxi to reach my hotel. If you ask me, getting an e-SIM is a quintessential part of traveling. There is no physical installation and no long-term commitments. And the best part is that you can always top up or purchase a new plan through the app. Pretty convenient, right? Find the best data plan for Romania HERE .

Where: 21 miles south of Tulcea on DN 22 Access: car, bus, mini-bus from Tulcea Town of Babadag, known during Roman rule as Vicus Novium, was first documented in 1263. Between 1262 and 1264, some 12,000 Turks, led by Sara Saltuk Baba, settled around Babadag at the request of the Byzantine emperor, Michael III. Between 1677 and 1678, the residence of the Pasha of Silistra was established here to better observe troop movements of the Russians, with whom Turkey was at war. The Museum of Oriental Art in Babadag is worth paying a visit. Its collections feature wooden, ivory and mother-of-pearl artifacts, religious items, daggers, tea services, a splendid bridal gown sewn with gold thread, Turkish dolls, Siraz, Sirme, and Anatolia carpets, and Kashmiri shawls said to have taken a quarter of a century to complete. Other places of interest include the Ali-Gazi-Pasha Mosque , the oldest in Romania (1522) and the nearby Kalaigi spring , in which pilgrims from all over the Balkans come to bathe their feet. Visitors also can view the ruined tomb of Ali-Gazi-Pasha , who, long ago, was the terror of the region. It is said he possessed a harem of 800 captive women.

Where: 27 miles south of Tulcea (3 miles east of Babadag) Access: car, mini-bus from Tulcea A former Roman, then Byzantine and Genoese, fortress, Enisala stretches between Lakes Babadag and Razim. 400 Dacian tombs, dating from the 5th century BC, found near Enisala, attest that the area was settled long before the Roman conquest of Dacia (today Romania).   Founded by the Byzantine Greeks the fortress was initially known as Heracleea or Herakleia . Heracleea fortress was destroyed, in the 6th century AD, during the Avar invasions and, rebuilt by Genovese merchants back in the 13th century. Sultan Mehmet I conquered the fortress in 1417 and renamed it "o Yeni Sale" (Enisala). By the 16th century, the citadel had been abandoned. Not far from the fortress, Enisala Peasant Museum (Gospodaria Taraneasca) features a traditional fisherman's house displaying colorful tapestries and folk art. Open: Wed. - Sun. 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Admission charge

At Capul Dolosman (Cape Dolosman), east of Jurilovca, visitors can see vestiges of a 6th century BC Greek colony, the oldest ancient habitat on Romanian territory, mentioned for the first time by Hecateus from Millet (6th -5th centuries BC).   Capul Dolosman is a protected area / Biosphere Reserve - a popular spot for bird-watching, especially in November when thousands of red-breasted geese arrive from the Arctic Circle.   Not far from Cape Dolosman, Lake Razim, once a Black Sea bay known as the Gulf of Halmyris, awaits exploration. A thin coastal strip of land now separates the lake from the open waters. From Jurilovca, visitors can rent a boat and travel (1 hour) to Gura Portitei, a spectacular strip of wild beach bordered by Lake Golovita, on one side, the Black Sea on the other side. Every year, in September, Jurilovca hosts the Fish Borsch Festival ( Festivalului Borșului Lipovenesc de Jurilovca ), the largest of its kind in Romania.

Cetatea Histria & Lacul Sinoe Where: 46 miles south of Tulcea on DN22 Access: car, bus, mini-bus Tel: (+4) 0241 618.763 Open: Daily, May -- September, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wed. -- Sun, October -- April, from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Admission charge for the museum and the site

Heading south from Babadag towards Constanta, visitors will pass through Istria. Four miles east of the village, on the shores of Lake Sinoe, is the ruined Greek-Roman city of Histria. Histria Fortress, the Pompeii of Romania, was the oldest Greek settlement in Romania. Founded in the 7th century BC by Greeks from Miletos, the richest city in Ionia (Asia Minor), this trading post soon became the main Greek port on the Black Sea. The city thrived for 14 centuries, prospering under Roman and Byzantine occupation, until invading forces wiped it off the map in the 7th century AD. The lost city features remains of Aphrodite's Temple, the Temple of Zeus, Roman baths and other public buildings from the Roman-Byzantine period. The nearby museum (open: Tue. - Sun 9:00am - 8:00pm; Closed Mon.) houses a collection of coins, ceramic items and other vestiges of the great civilizations that thrived on the Black Sea coast, or Pontus Euxin, as it was called in ancient times. Near Histria Fortress, you can visit one of the most beautiful lagoons in the country, Lake Sinoe , an extension of Lake Razim. The lake makes an excellent bird-watching site; 267 species have been recorded. The area is a stretch of marshy land and reedbeds between the freshwater Lake Nuntasi and the brackish lagoon of Lake Sinoe (the latter was open to the sea until 1960). Lake Razim is also popular for bird-watching, especially in November when thousands of red-breasted geese arrive from the Arctic.

We know the lakes and channels of the Danube Delta very well and even though we navigate these waters daily, the Danube Delta never ceases to surprise us with its beauty. This unique area in Europe, captivating with its multitude of plant and animal species, has won us over definitively and we invite you to join one of our shared tours. Join us by choosing a 2-3 hour tour or even a day tour and you will have the opportunity to discover why so many tourists return here year after year. We pay special attention to how we travel in the Danube Delta, which is why we provide all our tourists only premium boats specially designed for shallow waters. All our boats are intended for tourism and are prepared even for the moments when weather conditions in the Danube Delta may become unfavourable. For those hot summer days, our boats are equipped with special tarps that protect us from the sun and can be detached to travel with a completely uncovered boat. We want to spend as much time as possible in the Danube Delta indeed, and for transit areas such as the Danube branches (heavily navigated by commercial boats and a bit lacking charm), we have also equipped the boats with detachable covers. These provide extra comfort when we encounter rain clouds along our route and are very helpful in allowing you to enjoy a full day of excursion in the Danube Delta without having to carry heavy luggage with extra clothing for any weather conditions. In compliance with local regulations and out of respect for nature, our speed of travel in all our tours on lake and canal areas is approximately 10 km/h. When you come with us to explore the Danube Delta, we recommend that you choose comfortable shoes and lightweight clothing suitable for a day in nature. For walks in the woods or through villages, don’t forget your hat, and for leisure time on the beach, the most important thing is high-UV protection sunscreen. Water, soothing cream if you know you’re sensitive to insect bites, a snack that can last in your luggage for several hours during the summer, and lots of good vibes! All our programs have the boarding point in Tulcea Port (Harbour of Tulcea), immediately after passing the barrier at the entrance to the Tulco area. The official address is Tulcea City, Grigore Antipa Street No. 10 (at the intersection with Independenței Street No. 1).

Romania Travel Blog_Things To Do In Tulcea Romania

Tulcea, Romania, is one of the oldest cities in the country. It was founded back in the 7th century BC, even before the Romans arrived. In the pre-Roman days, the city was called Aegyssus. Some ruins from the ancient days are still hidden in Tulcea’s hills.

Tulcea (pronounced tool-cha) is also the biggest city in the Danube Delta, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the best-preserved river delta in all of Europe. So Tulcea might be the most fantastic destination in all of Romania for nature lovers. You can see an astonishing variety of fish, birds, and plants in your time here.

It is easy to get to Tulcea from Romania’s capital, Bucharest , by either bus or train. The trip from Bucharest takes between four and five hours. Tulcea is also reachable by bus or train from Constanta, a famous Romanian city on the Black Sea . Tulcea is not easily reachable by airplane.

Many group tours of Romania stop in Tulcea for one or two nights, but you can definitely explore the city on your own. Any traveler to eastern Romania will enjoy spending two or three days in Tulcea, exploring the city and the gorgeous surrounding natural beauty of the Danube Delta. This list will help you focus on the very best things to do in and around Tulcea.

Skip Ahead To My Advice Here!

Danube Delta Cruise

Things To Do In Tulcea, Romania - Danube Delta Cruise

The number one thing any traveler to Tulcea has to do is take a boat trip around the Danube Delta, which are the wetlands formed by the Danube River merging with the Black Sea . Companies like Rolandia and Discover Danube Delta offer cruises through this stunning and unique ecosystem.

It is better to book a cruise in advance, or you run the risk of them being sold out when you visit. The cruises can last for a morning or all day, depending on your timeframe. You will usually leave in the morning on a boat from Tulcea and enjoy the majesty of the Danube Delta.

There are a few tips to be aware of when you go on a Danube Delta Cruise. It can be rainy in Tulcea, and most tours leave rain or shine, so pack a poncho and umbrella . If you are lucky, your boat will have a cover that keeps out the rain. Also, it is unlikely there will be a restroom on the boat, so plan accordingly!

The most exciting sight in the Danube Delta is the many bird species that call the region home. After all, the Danube Delta has the third-highest biodiversity in the world. Only the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Galapagos Archipelago have more. That means you could explore the Danube Delta for days and still not see all the plants and animals in the wetlands.

But the birds of the Danube Delta are the most famous creatures. There are over 330 species of birds in this ecosystem! That’s almost one bird for every day of the year.

Some of the most special birds in the Danube Delta include the red-breasted goose, which is likely to become endangered, the giant Dalmatian pelican, and the pygmy cormorant. You will enjoy the tour of the Danube Delta more with a knowledgeable guide who can recognize these birds and point them out to you.

But even if you don’t see these treasures on your cruise, you will spot many pelicans, egrets, herons, and other beautiful creatures. And if you’re lucky, your boat driver will give you a little Romanian brandy to sip while you try to spy the birds.

Brands We Use And Trust

Walk along the saint george branch of the danube.

If you are looking for something relaxing to do after a day of touring the Danube Delta or visiting museums, go for a walk along the Saint George Branch of the Danube. This is one of the busiest areas of Tulcea. Locals and tourists alike can often be found strolling along here. Don’t miss this chance to appreciate one of the most famous rivers in the world.

If the weather is warm, get a scoop of salted caramel or chocolate ice cream from Fabrica De Inghetata, and enjoy it and the views of the Danube River at the same time. This is a relaxing way to end any day in Tulcea!

Things To Do In Tulcea - Mila 23 village Danube Delta Romania aerial view

Mila 23 is a small and culturally important village, just a short boat ride away from Tulcea. In fact, it’s not possible to get to Mila 23 without a boat. Many tours of the Danube Delta from Tulcea include a stop in Mila 23. But you can also get to Mila 23 from Tulcea by ferry. The price is very affordable.

If you do take a tour that stops in Mila 23, you’ll usually get a lunch that includes local fish like catfish. This can be prepared in a variety of ways, like fried or in a soup. There aren’t really any restaurants in Mila 23, but there are several guesthouses like Pensiunea Vanessa, and many of them serve lunch.

You might hear some Russian-sounding names when you are in Mila 23. That’s because many people in Mila 23 are Lipovans, ethnic Russians who moved to Romania centuries ago. The Lipovan houses are also traditionally painted blue, and it’s charming to walk around and see the blue homes and churches in the village .

The most famous Lipovan is probably Ivan Patzaichin, a Romanian Olympic canoeing champion. You’ll see a sign honoring Patzaichin and other great canoers from the area when you visit Mila 23.

Independence Monument

Tulcea is a city with seven hills, just like Rome , which means that there are many great places in Tulcea from which you can see the sunset. But one of the best is the north-eastern hill with the massive Monumentul Eroilor (Independence Monument).

The Independence Monument is dedicated to Romanians who fought for independence against the Ottoman Empire back in the 19th century. The monument has been restored because it was severely damaged during World War I. The structure is made out of granite and decorated with bronze sculptures of a soldier and a vulture.

From here, you can see almost all of Tulcea. After the sun sets, enjoy the lights sparkling around the Saint George branch of the Danube River that runs through Tulcea. You’ll understand why this is one of the best picture-taking spots in all of the city.

Central Eco-Tourism Museum Of The Danube Delta

Things To Do In Tulcea Romania _ Blue Shutters

Tulcea is home to several excellent museums, but the most important is probably the museum dedicated to the Danube Delta. One floor shows exhibits about the region’s history and way of life, and another floor is an aquarium.

The museum contains many stuffed birds from the Danube Delta, so you’ll be able to see some of the animals, like the mute swan, that you might have missed on the cruise. There are also models of Danube Delta fishermen that show how people in this community have traditionally made a living. You can see all of their techniques for catching and preparing fish.

The aquarium has live fish from the Danube Delta as well as the rest of the world. One of the most interesting local fish in the aquarium is the sturgeon. This is one of the most valuable fish in the Danube Delta because of its caviar. As a result, sturgeon have been overfished, so fishing sturgeon is now restricted.

You can also see smaller, cuter fish than the sturgeon, like the round Chinese goldfish. Any children in the group will be delighted with these shimmery gold creatures and want to take one home.

Eat Seafood

Best Seafood - Ivan Pescar

Tulcea has been an important fishing port for thousands of years. In fact, there are more than 45 different kinds of freshwater fish in the Danube Delta. The area is home to sturgeon, pike, catfish, mackerel, carp, and more! So when you come to Tulcea, you have to try some of the local seafood!

One of the best seafood restaurants in Tulcea is Ivan Pescar. In fact, this restaurant is owned by the Romanian canoeing champion, Ivan Patzaichin. Ivan Pescar serves local and fresh seafood. Plus it has excellent views of the Danube River.

You can get the traditional local fish soup, or you can try something more experimental like pasta with black sea snails . Don’t miss the chance to eat some of the pike roe! It’s much more affordable than the sturgeon caviar. The pike roe is served in a salty spread that tastes a bit like the Greek taramasalata.

Museum Of Fine Arts

The most famous Romanian fine artist is probably the sculptor Constantin Brancusi. But there are many other incredible Romanian artists, and you can see some of their works at Tulcea’s Museum of Fine Arts. It is located in one of the most interesting buildings in the city. This is a neoclassical structure that was an administrative building when the Ottoman Empire controlled Tulcea. (Back then, it was called The Pasha’s Manor House.) So the building itself is an official Romanian historical monument.

Perhaps the most important Romanian artist featured at the Museum of Fine Arts is Victor Brauner. He was a Romanian Jewish surrealist artist who studied with legends like Brancusi. His works have been shown in world-famous museums like the Metropolitan Museum of Art. And the Museum of Fine Arts is home to 14 of his pieces!

The Museum of Fine Arts is also famous for its collection of over 800 icons. Romania is a majority Orthodox country, and icons are important religious images in the Orthodox church. Many museums in Romania contain icons. But what makes the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Tulcea special is that they have so many Lipovan icons, showing the influence of the Russian Orthodox Church. You won’t be able to see icons like this in most other places in Romania !

The Avramide House

The Avramide House is run by the same cultural organization that runs the Museum of Fine Arts. So one affordable price will get you admission to both the Avramide House and the Museum. The Avramide House was originally owned by a man named Alexe Avramide. He lived in Romania, but he was born in Greece , and two Italian master builders constructed the house itself. So this one building shows the many different cultural influences you can find in Tulcea.

The Avramide House has been a museum since the 1950s, but the exhibits inside have changed. Now it is a museum of life in Tulcea that tells the story of the wealthy Avramide Family and how they lived in the first half of the 20th century in this house. The Avramide House also hosts cultural events from time to time.

Parcul Ciuperca

Romanians love going to the park! It can be a little harder to find the beautiful parks of Tulcea than it is in Bucharest, but the parks are still there. One of the nicest parks in the city is Parcul Ciuperca. It’s right on an artificial lake that was built under the Communist regime. There’s even a small artificial beach .

Locals come here to go for a jog or ride their bikes. There are also playgrounds for kids to play in, and there is ice skating during the winter months . Parcul Ciuperca also has restaurants and bars, so you can just relax outside with a drink and enjoy the views of the water.

History And Archaeology Museum

This museum is located about one kilometer east of the city center, but it is well worth the trip. It is located where the ancient fortress of the city of Aegyssus stood before the Romans came to Romania . Many residents of Tulcea are proud of living in such an old city, much older than Bucharest . You can even see the name Aegyssus on some signs in Tulcea, and now you will know what it means!

In most museums, the ancient Roman artifacts would be some of the oldest artifacts in the museum. This is not true in Tulcea. The Roman artifacts are the newer objects in this museum. The older ones are from the pre-Roman period when Celtic people lived in the region. The museum contains every kind of ancient object, from coins to bowls to equipment used for horses. English signs are available in the museum as well. Because the History and Archaeology Museum is so close to the Independence Monument, many people visit them on the same itinerary.

Introduction to Tulcea:

Tulcea (pronounced Tool’cha) is an old city in the historical region of Dobrogea, Romania and is the administrative center of Tulcea county. It has a population of about 92,000 and has been an important harbor since ancient times since it is where the famous Danube river finally ends its journey through Europe as it empties into the Black sea creating the famous Danube Delta.

The town has successively been under Byzantine (5th - 7th century), Genoese (10th - 13th century) and Ottoman rule before finally being reunited with Romania in 1878. Tulcea is busiest in August and December, when its regular festivals take place: the International Folk Festival of the Danubian Countries, held in odd-numbered years, and an annual winter carnival. The local Lipovani Russian and Turkish minorities lend the city a multi-ethnic flavora.

Trivia & Quick Points:

The city of Tulcea, laid out on seven hills like Rome, was founded in the 7th century BC by the Dacians. Aegyssus, as the city was known in antiquity, was conquered by the Romans who rebuilt it after their plans, their technique and architectural vision.

Aegussyus was first mentioned in the documents of Diodorus of Sicily (3rd century BC) and later, in the works of the Latin poet, Ovid, attesting that the name traces its origin back to its founder, a Dacian named Carpyus Aegyssus.

Tulcea is located at the end of the second largest river in all of Europe- the Danube, where it empties into the Black Sea... Just beyond the city is one of the largest wetlands on earth known as the Danube Delta .

Facts & Information:

Tulcea was founded in the 7th century BC under the name of Aegyssus, mentioned in the documents of Diodorus of Sicily (3rd century BC). Ovid referred to it in Ex Ponto, saying that its name would have originated with that of its founder, a Dacian named Carpyus Aegyssus.

After the fights from 12-15 B.C., the Romans conquered the town. They rebuilt it after their plans, their technique and architectural vision, reorganizing it. The existing ruined walls and defending towers serve as a testimony of this. Also an inscription found at the Tulcea Museum of Archaeology mentions the name Aegyssus for the town. The Aegyssus fortified town is mentioned also by other documents until the 10th century: Notitia Episcopatum in political geography "De Thematicus". It was then ruled by the Byzantine Empire (5th - 7th century), the Bulgarian Empire (681-c.1000; 1185-14th century), the Genoese (10th - 13th century), it was part of the local Dobrujan polities of Balik/Balica, Dobrotitsa/Dobrotici, and, for a brief while after 1390, ruled by the Wallachian Prince Mircea cel Bătrân. In 1416 it was conquered and ruled, for the next 460 years, by the Ottoman Empire.

In the 17th century Tulcea was mentioned by the Ottoman traveler Evliya Çelebi as a settlement with 600 houses, inhabited by Vlachs. Around 1848, it was still a small shipyard city, being awarded city status in 1860, when it became a province capital. It became a sanjak centre in Silistre Eyaleti in 1860 and Tuna Vilayeti in 1864.

In 1878 Tulcea was eventually awarded to Romania, together with the Northern Dobruja (see Congress of Berlin). Tulcea was occupied by Bulgaria between 1916-1918 during World War I.

Some City Culture

Tulcea is the site of the Concursul George Georgescu, a music competition created by teachers at the Tulcea Arts High School and held annually since 1992. Named in honor of conductor George Georgescu (1887-1964), an important figure in the development of Romanian classical music who was born in the surrounding county, it was at first open only to Romanian music school and high school students but began admitting international students in 1995. Organizers include the Romanian Ministry of Education and Youth, the School Inspectorate of Tulcea County, the Tulcea County Council, the Tulcea Mayoralty, and surviving members of Georgescu's family.

Beyond the City of Tulcea

Beyond the city proper of Tulcea is a fascinating Romanian world to discover... To many travelers, most prominent on the list is exploring the mouth of the famous Danube river, otherwise known as the Danube Delta.

Located at the tip of three incoming river channels, Tulcea IS the place to start for exploring this famous wetlands. Arrive early enough to catch one of the ferries that depart everyday at around 1:30 pm.

The Danube Delta- is in fact one of the greatest wetlands on earth. It consists of an intricate network of waterways and lakes divided between the three main estuary channels of the Danube. The great Danube River, (the second largest river of the continent), has deposited its waters here for the past 16,000 years, building at its mouth with the Black Sea one of the most beautiful deltas in all of Europe, perhaps in the whole world. The area of floating reed islands, forests, pastures and sand dunes covers 3,000 square miles and is home to a vast array of wildlife. It is the end of a course of over 2,840 km of incoming waters from a vast hydrological basin that exceeds 8% of the area of Europe.

The current geomorphology of the delta is the result of the interaction between the river and the sea during the Holocene period. At the beginning of the Holocene, when the level of the sea reached approximately the nowadays level, there was the so-called Danube Gulf. At its mouth, between the Jibrieni promontory to the north and the Murighiol- Dunavãt promontory to the south, formed the Letea- Caraorman levees. The alluvial materials were carried along the sea shore, by the marine currents, to the north, to the mouth of the Nistru, Bug and Nipru rivers.

Letea / Letea Forest (1 of 2)

From Sulina the path leads into the Danube Delta to the village of Letea, famous for its wild horses, the Letea Forest and lots and lots of nature, peace and quiet.

Letea can be reached by boat from Sulina. There you change to a horse-drawn carriage, since it is not allowed to visit the forest of Letea with motorized vehicles (nature reserve).

Back in Letea you will be spoiled with delicious, local food (fresh fish) and of course with the house drink of the area… Tuica (pronounced: Zuika), a traditional spirit from Romania made exclusively from plums.

The wild horses of… Sulina

The wild horses in the Danube Delta are famous and … you can find them right in the town of Sulina, almost touching

Historical documents show that the ancestors of today’s horse population in the Danube delta arrived there 300 to 400 years ago through the Tartars, became at home there and became more and more wild.

You can find these horses between the branches of the Chilia and Sulina rivers, in the Letea forest (Romanian: Padurea Letea, which covers an area of over 5,000 hectares (50,000,000 m2)), but also in and around the town of Sulina.

Die wilden Pferde von … Sulina

Sulina… the island town in Romania

Sulina… and the Black Sea

The city of Sulina in the delta of the Danube is not connected to the Romanian road network and can only be reached by water with private boats and passenger ships.

It is located at the easternmost point of Romania, in the Tulcea district directly at the Black Sea.

Sulina…

Sulina … shore promenade

About five (5) km long is the faleza (shore promenade) of Sulina. It starts at Mila 2 and next to the typical blue and green colored houses, the path is punctuated by new buildings (mostly hotels and lodgings) until you reach the old core of the city.

You can also come across horses right in the city, which do not belong to anyone and roam freely as they please. There are few cars (because they have to be brought to Sulina by ship), the clocks are slower here… and that’s a good thing!

First-class delta traveler ‘had a poop accident’ in front of horrified fliers — and this passenger managed to score free miles.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

A Delta passenger shared his crappy experience on a recent flight after a fellow traveler “had a poop accident” mid-flight.

On a Delta Reddit thread , the man said he was on a flight on Thursday when “a passenger in [first class] had a poop accident that caused an incredibly foul odor throughout the cabin.”

airplane pilot in uniform smelling something stinky

Horrified “passengers wanted the [flight attendant] to clean it up,” but the man stepped in to insist that the woman did not need to clean up the human waste.

“I approached her and told her that it was not her job, and she was doing a great job under the circumstances,” the man said.

He then shared a photo of a note he said the grateful flight attendant handed him as he walked off the plane.

“I apologize that your first-class flight wasn’t as pleasant as it should always be. Thank you for your understanding. I sent you some miles. Thank you for being a million miler,” the note read.

Delta flight attendant leaves note for passenger

The man claimed he followed up with management after his flight and let them know “what a great job she did in a stressful situation.”

This unfortunately isn’t the first time airline passengers have experienced a crappy flight.

Last month, a United Airlines flight bound for Seattle had to divert to Dallas after a dog allegedly “had a messy accident in the aisle right in first class. Plane diverted to DFW. Ground crew spent over two hours cleaning carpets with paper towels,” a Redditor recalled in a post .

Earlier this year, a parent claimed that a fellow passenger pooped their pants on a Delta flight on Christmas Eve — and left excrement smeared all over the seat, as detailed in a viral  Reddit post  grossing major views online.

And in September, a Delta flight from Atlanta to Barcelona was forced to turn around and make an emergency landing after a passenger “had diarrhea all the way through the plane.”

The Airbus A350 aircraft was two hours into a trans-Atlantic flight from Georgia to Spain on Friday when the pilot asked to come back because of the fecal fiasco.

“This is a biohazard issue,” the pilot said to air traffic control, recorded from LiveATC.com and  shared on X .

“We’ve had a passenger who’s had diarrhea all the way through the airplane, so they want us to come back to Atlanta.”

In a statement, a spokesperson for the airline said: “Our teams worked as quickly and safely as possible to thoroughly clean the airplane and get our customers to their final destination.

“We sincerely apologize to our customers for the delay and inconvenience to their travel plans.”

Delta Air Lines named one of top 5 companies on ReturnOnLeadership ranking

Delta people group shot

Indiggo, in partnership with Fortune, released its ReturnOnLeadership (ROL100) ranking –with Delta Air Lines taking the No. 4 spot overall. The ROL100 ranking captures the return on leadership of the top 100 companies in the Fortune 500. Delta rated higher than any other airline on the list and was the sole airline included in the top 5 rankings.

ReturnOnLeadership measures leadership based on four fundamental drivers: connection to purpose, strategic clarity, leadership alignment and focused action. The rankings are AI-driven, industry agnostic and based on a textual analysis of investor documents to determine clarity of strategy and score how employees feel about the company’s purpose.

The ranking is designed to focus on leadership execution and is an indicator of how well a company is positioned for future success.

“Measuring corporate leadership is vital to ensuring any company remains both compelling and resilient. By keeping our values and our people at the forefront of everything we do, I am confident that Delta will continue to be a strong leader in the airline industry and beyond,” Delta CEO Ed Bastian said. “I couldn’t be more proud of our leadership team.”

Delta’s fourth-place 2024 ranking is up 15 points from its 2023 ranking. You may read more about the rankings here and can learn more about Delta’s top score here .

American and Delta Release Fall Routes to College Towns Around the U.S.

Flights to South Bend, Indiana, Columbus, Ohio, and more are available to book.

delta travel tulcea

Robert Smith/Getty Images

U.S. airlines are getting ready for fall with a flight special schedule to college towns — especially with big game days in mind.

American Airlines announced 26 new routes connecting sports fans, families, alumni and more to the biggest college football games with flights to Alabama, Florida State (FSU), Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, LSU, Michigan, and Ohio State. The new routes also include a significant number of flights to South Bend, Indiana (SBN) which is home to the University of Notre Dame. These routes will operate point to point, so passengers won’t have a layover.  As a benefit to loyalty customers, American is only selling tickets on their new college routes to members of the American AAdvantage program, using frequent flier miles, and not cash through June 17. After that stretch ends, tickets will be released publicly.

“This means that being an AAdvantage member is even more special, as you can use your miles to book early access on popular flights to cheer on your favorite teams this fall,” American shared in a statement to Travel + Leisure.

Travelers can also find new routes for college football games on Delta Air Lines where the airline is operating special flights to many top games including LSU vs. USC in Las Vegas on Sept. 1. and Florida at Texas on Nov. 9.

According to ESPN , Interest in college football games has been on the rise, with over 25 million viewers tuning in to the College Football National Championship this year, the most-watched since 2019.
