Best of Bicol: What you need to know before visiting Legazpi and Sorsogon

Bicol is a region that I’ve been to before and wouldn’t mind returning to in the future. It has beautiful beaches, spectacular views, delicious food, and historic attractions that provide a glimpse into the Philippines’ past. I’ve been to both Albay and Sorsogon; these provinces are noteworthy destinations for travelers who want to see a bit of everything. Albay is home to Mt. Mayon while Sorsogon is a nature lover’s paradise.

Getting into Bicol

It’s easy to enter Albay or Sorsogon from Metro Manila. You have the option to go by plane or take the bus.

The closest airport is in Legazpi. There are regular flights from Manila to Legazpi operated by Cebu Pacific or Philippine Airlines. Book tickets months in advance to get the lowest price for your trip.

If your trip is spontaneous or you’re unsure of your plans, you could always take the bus from Metro Manila. This takes much longer than flying; however, prices are usually fixed even if you book on the same day. Traveling overnight also saves you money you might’ve spent on accommodation because you’ll arrive early in the morning.

DLTB is a bus company that I’ve tried for trips to Southern Luzon. The buses are comfortable enough for sleeping. Fare varies from around P800 to P1,100+++ one way depending on point of origin within Metro Manila, type of bus, and if you’ll be alighting at Legazpi or Sorsogon.

Sky’s the limit! Trails and peaks in Bicol you should try out

Sky’s the limit! Trails and peaks in Bicol you should try out

This itinerary will begin at Legazpi, Albay and assumes you have one full day.

Leave your accommodation after breakfast and stop at Daraga Church. The latter is a Baroque-inspired Catholic church that dates to the 1770s. It’s a popular tourist spot because of its white façade and the views of Mt. Mayon on a clear day. It’s also on the list of National Cultural Treasures.

After a quick stop at the church, proceed to another popular destination, the Cagsawa Ruins. Mt. Mayon’s eruption in the 1810s buried the town and church and killed thousands of people. What you see during your visit is the remnants of the church built more than a century ago. Take as many photos as you want with the ruins and Mayon in the background.

day trip bus to bicol

After Cagsawa, make your way to Sumlang Lake. The area is scenic and serene, which makes it a perfect place for photo ops and a meal or snack. You’ll get beautiful views of Mayon Volcano during your stay here. Nearby Socorro’s Lakeside Restaurant and Grill is a great place to try local food. Your Brother also offers tours for around P3,500 for two people to see Daraga Church, Cagsawa Ruins and Sumlang Lake.

day trip bus to bicol

Fees for Sumlang Lake:

  • Entrance fee: P100 adults, P60 children
  • Environmental fee: P20
  • Parking fee: P20 for four wheeled vehicles, P10 for two and three wheeled vehicles
  • Balsa ride: P80/person for 30 minutes
  • Kayak: P100/person for 30 minutes
  • Aqua bike: P100/person for 30 minutes

After lunch and resting, explore the area around Mt. Mayon on an ATV. The length of the activity depends on the package you get; shorter rides are cheaper while the longer ones are more expensive but provide you with more things to see. Our group went as far as the black lava wall with spectacular views of Mt. Mayon in the distance.

ATV rental for a single seater costs:

  • P299 for the budget trail, 20-30 minutes
  • P1,480 for the black lava trail, 2.5 hours

  • Website: http://mayonatvtour.com/

Cap your day off at the mall or in one of the restaurants lining Embarcadero.

Check out and eat breakfast before proceeding to the bus station to catch a ride bound for Sorsogon. Once in Sorsogon check in or leave your stuff at your chosen accommodation.

day trip bus to bicol

If you like museums, you can check out the Museo Sorsogon. The latter used to be a provincial jail; now it’s home to exhibits and displays about the history, culture, and prominent people of the province.

day trip bus to bicol

After the museum visit, make your way to the jeep or bus terminal and board either one bound for Juban. The latter is a sleepy town that has some traditional bahay na bato . These old houses are reminiscent of the Spanish period with their mix of wood and concrete floors, sliding windows, and wooden balustrades. The houses are easy to find once you alight at Juban, they’re along the main road. After checking out the houses, make your way back to Sorsogon.

day trip bus to bicol

Depart your accommodation in Sorsogon early for a trip to Lake Bulusan. Make your way to the terminal and board a jeep or van bound for Gubat. Alight at Gubat and board a jeep bound for Bulusan. Fare for both trips one way is around P60-P70. Once in Bulusan town, hire a tricycle for the day to Bulusan Lake and Zoe’s Resort. A fair price to pay would be around P800-P1,000 because the driver will wait for you at each stop.

Bulusan Volcano Natural Park has been developed to cater to tourists. There are now shuttles that take you directly to the lake. Enjoy the views or just hang out. Visitors can rent kayaks or go on a boat ride during their stay. For more adventurous visitors, you can hike and camp in Bulusan.

  • Protected area: P50 adults, P25 students (must show valid ID)
  • Environmental fee: P10
  • Shuttle: P35 round trip
  • Eco-guides: P150/hour
  • Kayak: P100/30 minutes
  • Boating: P600/5 persons
  • Fishing: P20
  • Stand up paddling: P200/30 minutes
  • Motorcycle: P20
  • Tricycle: P30
  • SUV/Cars: P50
  • Coaster/Jeep: P60

After Bulusan Lake, make your way to Zoe’s Resort. This destination is home to Kambal Busay and Hidden Falls. You can easily reach the former after descending the stone steps. Hidden Falls is not much further with a short walk on the other side of Kambal Busay. It’s easy to find. Take a dip in the cool pool or take a “shower” under the cascade of Kambal Busay. The resort has its own store where you can buy food and drinks.

day trip bus to bicol

Fees:

  • P150 for adults, P100 for children

Freshen up and return to Bulusan town proper to catch a jeep to Gubat then another jeep bound for Sorsogon.

day trip bus to bicol

Start early for a trip to Matnog. Bring some food and drinks with you for the journey and island hopping. Make your way to the terminal and catch a jeep bound for Matnog. Fare is approximately P90. After alighting at Matnog, head over to the port to rent a boat for island hopping. The day trip costs around P1,800 for up to 10 people. Places you’ll visit include Subic Beach (known for its pinkish and powdery sand), Juag Lagoon, and Tikling Island.

day trip bus to bicol

The highlight for me was Subic Beach. There are more people now compared to the first time I visited several years ago. However, this didn’t detract from the beauty of the beach. You can buy feed for the fishes during your stop at Juag Lagoon.

  • P70 environmental fee for Filipinos and P320 for foreigners
  • P1800 island hopping for day trips and P2,000 for overnight trips, up to 10 people
  • P200 Juag Lagoon
  • P500 cottage for Subic Beach

Be back at the port at around 3 pm so that you can catch a ride back to Sorsogon from Matnog. Last trips are usually around 4 pm.

Check out of your accommodation and make your way back to Legazpi for your flight. Alternatively, you can also take a bus departing for Metro Manila from Sorsogon or Legazpi.

It’s possible to end your trip sooner or add another day to see the whale sharks in Donsol. Going to Donsol doesn’t guarantee you’ll see a whale shark. You could spend hours on a boat or diving into the water without seeing one. The fee for whale shark watching is P5,000 including guide, spotter, and boat rental. It’s better to join a group if you’re alone or a group of less than five. You can arrange a tour through [email protected] . You could mix and match the itineraries based on how long your trip is. You could do it over the weekend or a longer holiday.

Tips for exploring Bicol

  • If you’re taking public transportation, you have to plan your trip around the schedule of buses and jeeps. The last trip back to Sorsogon, Legazpi, or other towns is around 4 pm. Try to be back early at the terminal or stop.
  • I used Sorsogon as the base for day trips to other parts of the province. I would recommend doing the same because you’ll have more dining and accommodation options. Legazpi Airport is just around an hour away if you’re flying in and out of this part of Bicol. You’re also in a transportation hub which makes it easier to visit other places. You reduce your travel time by around an hour if you plan to visit the destinations in the province compared to coming all the way from Legazpi.
  • Booking a tour through an agency is a convenient option because you share the expenses with others. You could arrange your accommodation on your own and book tours to places you want to visit. This is a possible alternative for groups of at least 2-3 people.
  • You could visit more places in the region if you rent a tricycle or car for the day. However, this is an option worth taking if traveling with a group or at least with one other person. The tricycle is an affordable option for day trips if you’re traveling alone.

How much will you spend?

A variety of factors will affect your budget when you travel to both Legazpi and Sorsogon, such as if you’re traveling alone because you’ll have no one to share expenses with, booking a tricycle or hiring a car, renting a boat for island hopping, where you eat, where you stay, and the activities you plan to do.

You can find accommodation in Legazpi City for around P500 to P1,000 a night for a shared or single room. In Sorsogon rooms are around P1,000+++ a night. These prices are listed online through booking sites. However, in my experience, once in the city you could always find cheaper accommodation that isn’t listed online. But if you don’t want the hassle of looking for a place to stay and wasting time, you can just book online. Your biggest expenses are for activities (renting a tricycle or boat, ATV ride and booking a tour package).

A mid-range budget of P10,500 each for 5 days and 4 nights covers accommodation, food, activities, transportation, and fees shared with at least one other person. With this budget you could go to Bulusan Lake, go on an ATV ride to the black lava wall, charter a private vehicle (car or tricycle), see some of Legazpi’s famous sites, island hop in Matnog, and others.

You could spend much less by removing some activities or choosing their budget alternative, going with a large group, and reducing the length of your stay. This doesn’t include the cost of your flight or bus ride into and out of the region. – Rappler.com

PITX Schedule

The schedule below is as of July 2022. Some pre-pandemic trips are yet to reopen. For updates, check the official PITX Facebook page.

Please note that some buses might leave earlier than their scheduled departure times when all passengers are onboard, so you may need to be at the terminal 2-3 hours ahead of your scheduled departure. Gate assignments also change from time to time. For monitoring real-time schedules and other travel updates, download the PITX app .

Valid ID may be required when buying tickets or boarding the bus.

The PITX Edsa route takes you to the EDSA Carousel, which in turn allows you to board public transport along EDSA and nearby major roads. The SRIT route takes you to the Santa Rosa Integrated Bus Terminal in Laguna.

Trips to Cavite City leave from Gate 2 and 6 while Tagaytay trips leave from Gate 2/4. For trips to Calamba, Laguna, and Quezon Province, walk-in ticket is available at the ground floor, Ticket Booth 6.

Cavite City and Laguna are both attractive destinations for day trips as both are rich in history and heritage. Cavite was where the Philippine independence from the Spanish crown was declared. Calamba was where the Philippine national hero, Jose Rizal, whose writings angered the Spanish, was born.

Escape the heat and oppressive humidity of Metro Manila by heading out to Tagaytay to savor its volcanic landscape, lakeside scenery, and mild climate.

The city of Iloilo is located in the Visayas in the west-central Philippines. It is rich in pre-colonial history as it is one of the landing sites of voyagers from Borneo (in what is now Malaysia and Indonesia). It is also popular with beach-goers for its world-renowned Boracay island.

When seeing the perfect cone of the Mayon Volcano is on the top of your list, head out to Albay. If you dream of swimming with marine life, the waters of Sorsogon are whale-friendly. For the religious, a pilgrimage to Naga City may be in order. So book your tickets now and experience Bicolandia.

Several bus companies and transport operators ply the Manila-Bicol route. Some of the operators might require a 2-day advance booking, so it pays to plan well ahead of your trip. Walk-in booking and inquiries can be done at the second floor, Ticket Booth 1.  You may also call ahead the operators for more details.

Tagaytay is for day trippers. If you have a weekend carved out for outdoor adventure – and you welcome much cooler temperatures to enjoy the mountain scenery, culture, and heritage – make it Baguio City.

Davao is popular for that pungent fruit, durian, and so much more. See the Philippine eagle in its (captive) glory, or lace up for a hike up the highest point in the Philippines, Mt. Apo. It’s going to be worth the three-day ride (including two roll-on/roll-off ferry rides) aboard one of the country’s longest transport providers, Philtranco.

Out-of-towners go to Mindoro for one thing: Mt. Halcon. It’s not as tall as Mt. Apo, but it’s a hulk of a mountain that requires serious stamina. Meet the Mangyans, one of the indigenous peoples of the Philippines, on its foothills.

Walk-in booking is available from Ticket Booth 1 at the second floor. To reserve seats or get more trip-related details, call the following transport companies and bus operators.

Quezon province has its fair share of religious architecture and rural charm. The journey is as enthralling as the destination, as the winding road takes you far away from city noise and into the peace and quiet of the old world.

The Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX) was envisioned to be the cutting-edge public transport hub for travelers heading as far north to Baguio and as far south to Davao in the southern Philippines, with plenty of destinations in between such as Tagaytay, Batangas, and Bicol Region.

Located in Paranaque City about 12 miles south of Manila, the PITX Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange mostly serves destinations in Southern Luzon an hour to a few hours away from the capital. It is the first-ever integrated transport hub in the country with comfortable and spacious waiting areas, information desks, clean and accessible restrooms, food courts, and even shops to serve passenger needs while waiting for their rides and ensure them of safe and seamless travel experience.

You can either book tickets online or buy them from designated ticket booths inside the terminal. Booking online may require you to either call for reservations, download their apps, or go to the bus company’s website or third-party vendors.

Refer to the bus operator contact information below the PITX Schedule tables for more details.

Road Trip Guide: Bicol Highlights

day trip bus to bicol

Over the years, I’ve gone back and forth from Manila to my hometown Naga City in Camarines Sur in the Bicol Region. I’ve also gone on road trips with the family to nearby provinces of mainland Bicol: Camarines Norte, Albay and Sorsogon. The Manila to Bicol route passing the Asian Highway 26 (AH26), also known as the Pan-Philippine Highway or Maharlika Highway, is a major road trip route on the island of Luzon in the Philippines.

day trip bus to bicol

I’ve been getting inquiries from people planning to drive this route whether by car or motorcycle (and even a few long-distance bikepackers), so I’ve decided to compile a suggested itinerary covering the essentials and some travel tips.

Table of Contents

Where exactly is the Bicol Region?

The Bicol Region makes up the southern part of Luzon, the largest island in the Philippine archipelago. By land, Naga City is over 400+ km from Metro Manila while the Matnog Ferry Terminal in Sorsogon is 600+ km away. Depending on the traffic conditions and what time you leave, it can take anywhere from 8-14 hours to get to various points of the Bicol mainland coming from Metro Manila.

After traversing from Manila to Bicol mainland, you can leave Luzon and cross over to Visayas via the Roll-on Roll-Off Ferry from the Matnog Port in Sorsogon to reach Allen in Samar. From there, you can cross to Leyte and towards Mindanao via Surigao.

Why it’s great for riders

The distance from Manila, availability of hotels and resorts, variety of natural attractions you can see along the way and amazing cuisine make the Bicol region a great destination for riders. Naga City in Camarines Sur and Legazpi City in Albay are usually the main destinations, but you can also opt to detour through Daet in Camarines Norte or go all the way to the end of Luzon in Sorsogon before heading back to Manila if you have enough time to spare.

day trip bus to bicol

For road trippers doing this for the first time, the most important considerations aside from where to load gas (there are gas stations in major cities), are where to eat (preferably something unique to the place), major landmarks or points of interest easily accessible from the highway, and cheap places to stay if you arrive at night or want to explore the province further. So here are some suggestions of the most scenic and best highlights based on my personal road trips.

day trip bus to bicol

Route map for Bicol Road Trip

The fastest route from Manila to Bicol is via the Pan-Philippine Hwy / AH26, which has tolls.

Cavite / Laguna / Batangas

Before you can get to Bicol from Manila, you have to pass through several towns in the Calabarzon region. It can take 4-6 hours just to get away from Manila depending on the traffic. If you’re passing SLEX, it’s best to leave Manila as early as possible (around 4 am) so you can avoid heavy traffic in areas like Sto. Tomas in Batangas, Alaminos, San Pablo in Laguna, Candelaria and Sariaya in Quezon.

If you’re driving a small displacement bike or scooter, an alternative route is to go via the Laguna backroads, which traverses Pilillia, Pagsanjan and Lucban. This route is much more scenic and you can skip major traffic-choked towns and emerge in Pagbilao right after Lucena. Good places to stop for photo ops include the Pilillia Wind Farm in Rizal (if passing Laguna backroads) and Pagsanjan Stone Arch (if passing Laguna backroads), if you haven’t been there yet.

day trip bus to bicol

A bulk of the road trip to Bicol involves driving through the province of Quezon. This province, east of Metro Manila is the 8th largest province in the Philippines and the largest province of Calabarzon.

Hi Ms. Kara Santos

Greetings from the Kingdom of Bahrain,

First, let me introduce to you our company, Bahraini German International Services (BGIS). BGIS is a fully license travel and tourism company in the Kingdom of Bahrain since 2004. One of our Division is MTG (Motorcycle Travel Group) which is focusing on Big Motorbike Trips.

We’ve successfully made a lot of Motorbike trips in Europe and this 2018, we plan to include Philippines in our destinations. Our first Target destination in Philippines is Luzon, please see in this link the map of the trail plan https://goo.gl/maps/2RJtUgi1TEK2

With this, we would like to inquire if you are organizing Big Motorbike trips from Manila to Luzon for experienced motorbike riders as we are searching for reliable partner in Philippines to make this trips successful and fruitful or can you suggest to us reliable Motorbike Trips operators for Luzon for this purpose?

Looking forward to hear from you soon.

Thanks and best regards. Ms. Mira Encabo Bahraini German International Services Kingdom of Bahrain

Hello Mira. Wow, thanks for the inquiry. I don’t operate any motorbike tours myself, but I’ve joined Ride Along Motorcycle Tours to Baguio. They also have tours to Baler and would probably make a great partner for your tours. They have a good fleet of Big Bikes including the Royal Enfield Classic, Royal Enfield Himalayan and Vulcan S650. You can contact them at [email protected] or through the website: http://www.ridealongtours.com/ Hope you come to a good deal! 🙂 Let them know Kara Santos of Travel Up referred you.

Wow! Such a jaw-dropping scenery, Kara! I fell in love with this place thanks to your post and pictures. How long did your road trip last?

Thanks, Agness! The Manila to Naga leg (with one night in Quezon) took us 1.5 days (but we had a detour island-hopping thing after). The other sections, I compiled from various other road trips. While technically you could drive this straight in a day using a private vehicle, I would suggest allotting 4-5 days for the whole trip, so you can spend quality time in various spots instead of breezing through.

Hi there! You have given us a lot to discover in bicol and you shared it in a very detailed way. May i just ask you where is the last picture located? The one with a swimming pool surrounded by coconut trees

Hello Vonvon. Thank you. The last photo was taken in Siama Hotel in Sorsogon. You can read more about it here .

Loved your travel blogs, had i been younger, i would probably do what you’re doing. Thanks for the lovely recommendations of these places along bicol and quezon. Ive been travelling too but not enough of our own. Need to make plans for the family’s getaway before my knees will stop me .! Keep up what you’re doing and looking forward to more posts and pictures from you.

Hi Gigi, thanks for the comment. I do hope more people will be encouraged to travel around the Philippines before other countries. We have a lot of beautiful spots to offer! 🙂 Enjoy road-tripping with your family.

hi ms kara..you made me inspire thanks sa mga advice mo..im planning solo ride to donsol this dec 23..first time ko po ito pa bicol d ko pa po kabisado ang way pero tatanong tanong nalang po cguro ako… 🙂

Hi Earl. Medyo maulan ngayon, so ingat sa biyahe! Hopefully by December 23, gumanda yung panahon. 🙂 Pag solo ride, parati kong ginagamit ang GPS at Googlemaps sa phone para sigurado na sa tamang daan. Magbaon din ng fully charged powerbank para sa phone.

How are the roads? Di ba delikado? Are there bangin along the way? TIA

Buses and cars regularly pass the Bicol highway. There are some areas (esp. the Old Zigzag Road in Quezon) na medyo may bangin and steep sections, but overall, hindi naman ganun ka-delikado unless you travel during the rainy season, at night or there are landslides. Best to travel during the day to be safe.

Hi Kara!ur blog sooo interesting…is there a van can be hired for our trip fr camnor+camnsur+albay+sorsogon ….rate oer day hm.thank you maam kara?

Hello Maria. Thank you. I haven’t tried that myself, but you can easily use Google. Type “van rental” + “name of place.” Here’s one based in Naga City . Not sure what their rates are, but you can inquire with them directly.

hello po may rough roads po ba kayo nadaanan?

  • Pingback: Best Motorcycle Road Trips from Manila | Travel Up

Wala na rough roads along most of the highway from Manila to Bicol. Completely paved, though meron parts na one-way or lubak na yung asphalt.

Good day! I would like to ask if a compact sedan (possible of 4 passenger) is alright to drive along.

Hi Ezra, yes. Many people drive sedans to and from Manila to Bicol. Just be careful with the potholes and rough patches of asphalt in some sections.

Salamat po sa guide na to. I will be riding solo to naga city this december 15 to 17. May i ask kung saan hotel sa naga ang affordable at secured ang motorcycle ko? Haha salamat po. More power and God bless!

Hi Alex, thanks. Not sure what your budget is, but siguro one of the hotels along Magsaysay Ave, para malapit sa mga kainan. ADC Hotel is cheaper compared to other hotels in the area and rooms are nice. Try eating in Bob Marlin nearby! Eurotel and CBD Plaza Hotel pwede din. Yung InnBox Hotel (container van hotel) in Daraga, Albay also looks interesting for riders.

Thanks ma’am Kara! Btw I alloted 2k for accomodation. Ill be spending the whole day exploring Naga city by foot so I’m just really lookinh for a hotel leave my precious bike and sleep for like 6 hours during the night haha anyways, thank you so much for your input. Godbless you ma’am and sir Art! Ride safe!

You’re welcome, Alex. Have a safe trip to Bicol!

In Naga, there are actually several churches there but we only visited two of them as we are time-constrained. We visited both the PeГ±afrancia Basilica Minore and Our Lady of PeГ±afrancia Basilica Minore.

Hi Ms Kara. It will be my first time traveling (and driving) from Mla to Bicol, Matnog to be exact. And this is exactly what I needed. Though I still have a lot of questions, I’d like to know how long the drive will be. I, with my partner, will leave on April 12 4am (as per your advise) but still not sure what will happen in the next few days. As the driver, I am not sure what route to take and where to get some rest. I hope I can reach out to you personally and maybe have a little chat about it. I’m sure you are busy but I am hoping to hear from you. Please write me back.

Hi Ms. Kara! Thanks for imparting us your trip. May I just ask where in Cam norte did that beach photo of yours taken? Would you reco that beach for swimming? Thanks!

Hi Geo, the photo of the beach in Cam Norte is Bagasbas Beach in Daet. It’s a gray sand beach ideal for surfing, but is also popular among locals for swimming. Sand and wave conditions are similar to Baler. Check out this post .

Hello Alden. Manila to Matnog usually takes 12 hours of driving without the rest stops. I suggest you just turn on Googlemaps and follow the route. I’m sure there have been a lot of changes since I drove there last what with the pandemic, so any advice I give may no longer be applicable. Stop and rest wherever you feel like it, that’s really part of the adventure of road trips. Have a safe trip! 🙂

Hi, Ms Kara

This will be our first time driving from Manila to Sorsogon with my hubby and sister. Any recommendations for a location with a good view and food/coffee/snacks that we can stop to rest along the way? We plan to leave Manila at midnight.

Hi Gladys, there have been a lot of changes since the pandemic and I believe there are a lot of new restaurants now, so I can’t give updated information. There used to be simple seaside eateries along the highway for riders in the Gumaca (Quezon) area. In Naga and Legazpi, BIGG’s is always a favorite fastfood pit stop favorite though not really the best for views. There are also the usual fastfood stops like Max’s in the major towns along the route.
