The Story of Our Food

When it comes to cruise dining, every dish has a tale to tell, best cruises for food lovers.

Food & Wine Magazine

It begins in a little village. Or a big city. Or a tropical island. Our chefs travel from their homes to our ships, bringing family recipes and enthusiasm along with them. They create dishes served by crew members who love to tell stories of their own, about where they’re from and where they’ve been, and hear your stories too. Because food brings people together, especially here.

Dine when, how and where you like

Princess offers Personalized Dining so you're in control. Fit in a formal dinner before a show. Explore the possibilities of our casual eateries whenever works for you. Use OceanNow® to order a burger and beer that finds you while watching Movies Under the Stars®. Make reservations so you can make the most of mealtime with more options to enjoy and less waiting.

Complimentary Dining

So many dining options at no extra cost

If you’re hungry, you have options. Lots of them. Felling fancy-ish? Our main dining rooms offer three service levels with mouthwatering meals helmed by a waitstaff who makes sure your glasses are full and your tase buds are happy. Prefer a more casual setting? World Fresh Marketplace outshines any cruise buffet – with regional fare, chef specialty stations and familiar favorites. And don’t forget our International Café with sandwiches, soups and – you guessed it! – sweet treats.

Casual Dining

Relaxed yet rewarding

These sit-down restaurants and pop-ups may not be fancy, but the food is lip-smacking good, and there’s something for everyone: meat lovers, seafood aficionados, wine connoisseurs, pub-goers, you name it. Enjoy them all for only a small fee. (Worth it.)

Speciality Dining

A cruise dining experience you won’t want to miss

Make any night a special occasion at our award-winning restaurants. Explore them all: treasured Italian recipes at Sabatini’s, next-level surf and turf at Crown Grill and Sterling Steakhouse or the Cajun-infused menu of the Bayou Café. Or dine an extravagant multicourse dinner complete with wine pairings at Chef's Table.

Food, drinks (and more) delivered wherever you are

Prefer to dine on your balcony or while catching a sunset on the top deck? It’s easy with OceanNow®. Order your favorite food and drinks on your smart device or directly through a crew member, and we’ll bring them right to you! Fresh, authentic and inspired, there’s always something to tickle your taste buds

Head of Princess culinary arts - Rudi Sodamin

Made from scratch

It’s bread baked fresh 24-7. Pastries made with only the best ingredients (because you can taste the difference). Steaks aged and cut on board. Homemade pasta rolled and shaped every day. We carefully craft every dish as though we were having you for a meal in our home because, come to think of it, we are.

Dine like a local

There’s no better way to experience a place than through its food. So you’ll find regional flavors all around you on board, favorite recipes chefs brought from home or discovered along the way. Think curries from India and homemade pasta from Italy. Seafood in Alaska and street tacos in Mexico. We don’t just say "authentic" we serve it.

The Complete Guide to the Concierge Class Lunch

Last updated: June 4th, 2024

Couple eating concierge class embarkation lunch

  • Find a Cruise

The first official day of your cruise vacation begins with the swirl of activity, the clink of your welcome champagne glasses, and the sheer awe of the magnitude of your ship, instantly activating your “out of office” mode. Relaxation starts now.

As part of the luxurious Concierge Class, you’ll gain access to certain services and amenities, including a complimentary Welcome Aboard Concierge Class Lunch, that aren’t part of a regular cruise experience. Welcome to vacation.

What’s on the Celebrity Cruises Concierge Class Lunch menu?

You can feast on an array of choices at the Welcome Aboard Concierge Class Lunch, beating the midday rush for delicious eats in the main dining room. Start with creamy butternut soup or a Caesar salad as an appetizer.

For mains, you’ll have your pick of roast salmon with fingerling potatoes and spinach, Moroccan braised short ribs on a bed of couscous, or grilled chicken paillard with french fries and a tasty shallot vinaigrette.

For the vegetarians in your group, try the whole wheat penne pasta.

Celebrity Cruises onboard chef preparing dessert

Dessert is extra sweet while on vacation. Choose between dulce de leche and chocolate fudge cake or a warm slice of apple pie a la mode with vanilla bean gelato and candied walnuts.

What time is the Concierge Class Lunch?

On embarkation day, Concierge Class guests can enjoy an exclusive welcome lunch. You’ll have your pick of dining options in the Main Restaurant onboard the ship.

While there’s no shortage of dining choices available throughout the ship, at the Concierge Class Luncheon, you’ll find a more intimate setting where you can meet and mingle with fellow cruisers. Get to know your stateroom “neighbors” and new friends alike.

Luncheon times vary by ship and itinerary, so be sure to select an early boarding time in the app when checking in.

What amenities come included in Concierge Class?

As a special member of the Concierge Class, you’ll receive personalized concierge service, special amenities, stateroom features, and extra perks.

Elegant Concierge-Class Veranda Stateroom on Celebrity

Sink into your plush bedding in your Concierge-class stateroom . Watch the waves roll in from your ceiling-to-floor sliding glass doors. It’s the perfect view to drift off into an afternoon nap, or let the ocean lull you into a peaceful night’s rest. Slip on your cozy bathrobe and get comfortable.

Dedicated attendants are readily available to answer your questions and make restaurant reservations for you. Ask for the pillow menu to customize your bedding experience and enjoy complimentary shoeshine services during your cruise. Sparkling wine and daily delectable delights are also available upon request.

Discovery at Destination Seminars

Celebrity Destination Gateway room

Exclusive destination seminars help you make the most of every port city we sail to, so you’ll discover the hot spots and top attractions before you even step off the ship. Seating tips

Most cruise boats have both indoor and outdoor seating with two-by-two seats.

For the best selfie spots, pick an outdoor seat for uninterrupted views and perfect photo sessions if you don't mind the somewhat harsh weather. However, it's a good idea to wear clothes that dry quickly if you fear you might get wet.

If you are picking an indoor seat, pick a window seat, especially if you are traveling solo, for a great view. Indoor seats are also great if you think it may rain but still want to go on a cruise. These indoor spaces are also heated and most cruise boats are equipped with a full-licensed bar.

Breaking news, family’s $15k carnival cruise vacation canceled just 2 days prior, without their knowledge, after sharing booking number on facebook.

A Kentucky family’s $15,000 Carnival Cruise vacation they had been planning for a year was canceled just two days before the ship was set to sail after they accidentally shared their booking number online in a case of identity theft.

Tiffany Banks was devastated to learn that her trip aboard the Carnival Celebration ship with her husband and their four kids was canceled without her knowledge the day before the family was going to fly to Florida to leave on the boat.

Banks said in a series of TikTok videos that she had no idea their vacation, for which they had already paid in full, was trashed until she got an email about off-ship excursion cancellations and called to investigate.

Tiffany Banks

A Carnival customer service representative told her that she had canceled her $12,000 reservation for the ship’s largest room — the Excel Presidential Suite — through the online system.

The mom and nurse practitioner said she went into “a full-blown panic” and she and her four kids were all in tears.

“We have nearly $15,000 tied up in for this vacation including excursions. The room itself was I think $12,000 or $13,000, and then we’ve got a few grand tied up in excursions, and actually with almost $2,000 for flights,” she said in a May 12 TikTok video.

Banks said she never canceled the trip and wondered if it was a system glitch.

Carnival said the room they had booked was now reserved by another customer and offered the family two interior rooms — the cheapest on the ship — instead, but the mom did not feel it was an adequate replacement.

Carnival also refused to offer a full refund as its cancellation policy states that no money will be returned within 15 days of the cruise date.

Banks said in a series of TikTok videos that she had no idea their vacation, for which they had already paid in full, was trashed until she got an email about off-ship excursion cancellations and called to investigate.

The family flew to Miami and tried to board the ship anyway, hoping for a last-minute solution, but were unable to get on and the ship sailed off without them, Banks said in a teary follow-up video.

They instead stayed at an Airbnb in the Sunshine State, hoping to make the best of their change of plans while the mom shared frustrating updates on TikTok.

In one clip, she responded to “haters” who accused her of hiding things or not sharing the full story.

“I’m an open book. I talk too much. I give out too much information — that’s just me naturally,” she said in remarks that would become an ironic prediction of what was to come in the saga.

A Carnival customer service representative told her that she had canceled her $12,000 reservation for the ship's largest room -- the Excel Presidential Suite -- through the online system.

A few days later, Carnival called Banks back with an explanation of how her long-awaited cruise trip was canned.

The cruise line told Banks that she was the “victim of a form of identity theft” but that there was no security breach on Carnival’s part, according to a recording of the call she shared on TikTok.

Banks and her husband accidentally shared their cruise booking reference number when posting a screenshot of an email with the countdown to their vacation on Facebook a few weeks out, according to the clip.

The family flew to Miami and tried to board the ship anyways, hoping for a last-minute solution, but were unable to get on and the ship sailed off without them, Banks said in a teary follow-up video.

The same day they posted the booking number on Facebook, someone created an online Carnival account and added the number to their profile.

Then, 48 hours before the cruise sail date, the person canceled the family’s entire cabin booking, the Carnival rep told Banks in the recording.

Banks said Carnival told her that it believes the IP address of the person who canceled was in British Columbia but it was unable to get an identity of the fraudster.

The company offered her future cruise credit for $10,404 contingent on the mom posting on social media “something to the effect of Carnival has now resolved the issue.”

But Banks said she wasn’t interested and questioned the ease with which someone was able to take over her booking with no verification process.

“We’re not sailing with Carnival ever again,” she said.

The Post reached out to Carnival but did not immediately receive a response.

Planning a summer cruise? Here are some expert tips for your excursion

Taking a cruise allows you to see multiple places without the hassle of arranging separate transportation and accommodations.

“Traveling on land requires constant planning, whereas cruises allow you to immediately relax,” Lindsay Fraley, Travel Consultant with Grand Voyages told the AJC.

There’s something for everyone on the ship and at each port of call. You only unpack once and meals are included. What more could you ask for?

“Cruising is a great way to spend time with family members. They accommodate every level of interest and activity and allow you to see multiple destinations,” Kristin Hawkins, Travel Consultant at Expedia Cruises - Air, Land & Sea Vacations told the AJC.

It’s not always easy to pick where to go though, and, as you get older, you may have to make adjust plans to ensure you get the most out of the experience.

“Europe river cruises are very popular,” Hawkins said. “The ships are much smaller, it’s all-inclusive, sometimes with beer, wine, and shore excursions included, ports are usually close to cities and sailing is smooth.”

While river cruises have their positives, there are still some favorite destinations that take you out to sea.

“The Caribbean is always a popular destination, especially in the winter months. The weather is 70-80 degrees and sunny. You can’t beat it!” Fraley said.

Once you’ve narrowed down where to go, it’s time to make plans. Researching cruise lines and routes will help you find the right amenities and excursions for you and your travel companions.

“Research, research, research, or find a reputable travel agent who can guide you to the best options that align with your vacation goals,” Fraley said.

She also recommends starting the process about nine months beforehandto have plenty of time and get a good deal.

When it’s time to book the cruise , Hawkins recommends giving yourself an extra day at your starting location to take in some local culture. This also ensures any flight delays or cancellations don’t interfere with your trip.

Next comes booking excursions. Make sure to look closely at the level of intensity and the accessibility of each outing. You want it to align with what you feel comfortable doing without putting yourself at risk for injury or exhaustion.

“Every excursion has a description and shows how intense the activity is and whether or not it’s accessible,” Fraley said.

It may be worthwhile to speak to an experienced travel agent as well. According to Fraley, they’re able to help you navigate any hurdles when it comes to accessibility on the ship and off.

Hawkins takes it a step further, recommending you rent a mobility aid if you have difficulty walking long distances, but still want to get out and explore.

As departure day approaches, Hawkins and Fraley suggest you download the cruise line’s app to stay organized.

“All cruise lines have an app for passengers to use. You can view your itinerary, ports of call, times, and activities on board,” Hawkins said.

Even if you’re not used to using technology, this is an easy way to keep your travel information with you at all times. It also frees you up to acclimate to living aboard a cruise ship.

“Get to know the ship first thing when you get on board. You will get the lay of the land and figure out where you want to sit by the pool, eat, and relax and where all the activities are located,” Hawkins said.

With these tips, you’ll have everything you need to start enjoying yourself on your relaxing and exciting cruise from the moment you set sail.

Multi-generational family dining in restaurant

On the Scene Mexico City: Locals on Current Trends in Their City

A Mexico City tradition that Ami Oppelt, who came here from Zurich to work at a gallery, quickly learned to love: late lunch on Sunday with the extended family

Mexico City is a modern megacity with fascinating museums, inspiring restaurants and an exciting history. It's loud, the streets are busy and there's always something to see. On Sundays, the capital's residents shift down a gear and focus on the important things in life: time with the family and an extended late lunch that easily lasts throughout the day and into the evening.

I have been invited a few times to such family events – lunch and dinner among a large and colorful intergenerational group – and these really are very special gatherings. There is a lot of eating and drinking, and even more laughing and talking. Sometimes there is even dancing. Fiery and varied Latin American cuisine adds the icing on the cake, and it is not without reason that Mexicans are incredibly proud of their food.

One of my favorite restaurants in the city and ideal for a relaxed Sunday is Contramar, not far from Parque España in the Roma Norte district. A trendy restaurant that attracts tourists and locals alike with its refined fish dishes and stylish indoor and outdoor areas. One must-try is the red and green grilled snapper.

If you fancy something a little bit more upmarket, reserve a table at Máximo, one of the best restaurants in Mexico City. We highly recommend the eight-course tasting menu, which represents fine Mexican cuisine. The scallops Aguachile or the wood-grilled rib eye of Wagyu beef are simply fantastic.

A little unconventional but definitely worth a visit is the Lago Algo cultural center in the city park right by the lake. You can enjoy exhibitions by local and international artists organized by Galería OMR. What a Sunday!

Avoid these 10 mistakes when booking cruise shore excursions

C ruise lines offer shore excursions for your convenience. Instead of spending hours reading up on a port, crafting the perfect eight-hour activity schedule or researching local tour guides, you can simply choose from a list of curated tour options. Easy peasy ... except you can still screw it up.

If you want the perfect day in port, you need to be savvy about your tour planning. Avoid rookie mistakes, and never do these 10 things when booking shore excursions for your next cruise.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Don't skip the destination research

Cruise line shore excursions try to cover the most popular sights and attractions in a destination, but your ship might not offer a tour to every interesting spot in or near the port. If you don't do your own destination research and only make your tour decisions based on what the cruise line is offering, you might miss out on an activity you'd enjoy more.

Take the time to do some independent sleuthing for each port on your itinerary before deciding how to spend your limited, precious time ashore. Perhaps you'd prefer a local hike you can do on your own, a religious site that's especially meaningful to you, or an attraction or tour that relates to one of your specific hobbies or interests.

Related: Tips and tricks to make your first cruise go smoothly

Don't ignore the reviews

Can you tell the difference between an overcrowded tourist trap and a fabulous site from the shore excursion description? I can't, and neither can anyone else. The marketing copy is designed to sell the tour.

Read what other travelers have to say about a specific excursion or attraction before plunking down your money and signing up for that tour. You don't even need to seek out a third-party site. Some cruise lines have shore excursion reviews right on their websites.

Don't gloss over the fine print

Cruise lines provide a lot of details about a shore excursion, from how long it lasts to how much physical activity is involved and how you'll be exploring. Yet so many cruisers don't bother to read the full description or the fine print. If you skip this step, you won't realize that the bus tour only passes by, rather than stops at, a famous cathedral or museum. Or, you might miss a note explaining that there's no free time or food included.

I went on a tour in Cagliari, Sardinia, sold as a long morning of walking on cobblestoned streets. One elderly passenger, struggling and out of breath, turned to me and said, "I had no idea this tour would involve so much walking!" I had to bite my tongue. Who would have guessed that about a tour called "Exploring Cagliari On Foot?"

If you want to know exactly what you're booking, take the time to read the complete description.

Don't neglect the independent option

Cruise line tours are convenient, but they're not always the most customizable or economical options. If you're traveling as a family or with a group of friends, you might be better off hiring your own guide for the day. Not only could it be less expensive than five or six shore excursion tickets, but you'll also be able to create a tour based on your interests.

Even couples traveling alone might find more affordable group tours offered by independent operators or tour options not offered by the cruise line. Online message boards and Facebook groups can be great resources for finding other travelers on your cruise ship interested in joining you on a private tour.

Don't book your excursions too late

Not all shore excursions are large group bus tours with multiple departures. Boat trips and cycling tours might have caps on the number of participants, and some tour times are more popular than others. In some ports, cruise lines might arrange a special experience — such as Cognac blending or pasta making — that is meant for a small group.

If you have your heart set on a particular tour, don't assume it will have space available if you wait to book until you board your cruise ship. Look over the shore excursion options in advance, and be ready to reserve your spot online as soon as they open for booking. If not, you risk losing out on the opportunity to have that cool once-in-a-lifetime experience, such as salmon fishing in Alaska or wagyu sampling in Japan.

Related: What can you do if your cruise cancels port calls?

Don't ignore your personal limitations

Easily carsick? Hawaii's winding Road to Hana is not for you. Not physically fit? Skip the hiking and biking tours, no matter how fun they sound. Usually the first to get seasick? A catamaran ride is the wrong choice.

Don't let the romance of a tour description convince you to overlook your physical limitations. Overdo it, and you'll waste a vacation day feeling miserable — or, worse, end up with an injury. No beautiful waterfall or ancient ruin is worth that.

Don't assume you need an organized tour

Don't feel compelled to take a tour just because one is offered. Plenty of ports don't require a shore excursion. Some — like St. Tropez or Mykonos — are truly lovely places to wander, get lost in the shop-lined streets and end up at an alfresco restaurant for a long, wine-soaked lunch.

Just be sure to read up on the area around the dock so that you know whether you'll be pulling right up to the center of the action or if sightseeing on your own requires a shuttle or a cab. Grab a tourist map, or use a map app on your phone so you don't get lost.

Related: 16 things you shouldn't leave a cruise ship without trying once

Don't go-go-go all day, every day

In a misguided attempt to maximize their vacation time, some cruise travelers make a point to book all-day tours on every port day, exhausting themselves with endless sightseeing or active endeavors in the hot Caribbean sun. Especially on port-intensive itineraries, this can lead to excursion burnout.

Your best vacation is made up of activities that make you happy. When you're in the sun-drenched Caribbean , it's perfectly OK to skip the waterfall hike or the visit to a rum distillery and book a resort pass to spend the day on a cushy lounge chair by a quiet pool, frozen drink in hand.

Don't cancel at the last minute

Most cruise lines allow you to cancel your shore excursion plans with a certain amount of notice. You can take advantage of that flexibility by booking tours early to reserve a spot and canceling if you find a more interesting private tour or decide that you'd rather have a day to wander on your own.

If you don't want to forfeit the price of the tour, however, you need to cancel in advance, usually one or two days before that port of call. If you contact the shore excursion desk that morning to say you're not feeling well and want to skip out, you'll still get charged on your final cruise bill.

Related: 15 ways the cruising newbies waste money on their first cruise

Don't be penny-wise and pound-foolish

If you came all this way on a cruise to see the local sights, don't let the cost of exploring limit that experience. Staying on the ship — or wandering the sometimes-sad area right by a port — is no way to get good value from your cruise vacation.

Budget wisely for in-port exploration when you plan your sailing so you can experience the attractions and activities that sold you on the destination in the first place.
