Lambros sentence to more than 20 years for sexually assaulting unconscious patients.

Chris Lambros, a 61-year-old ICU nurse, has been arrested.

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - A former nurse, Christopher Lambros, has been sentenced to more than 20 years in prison for sexually assaulting unconscious patients starting in 2016. Christopher Lambros, aged 62, pleaded guilty to six counts of attempted sexual assault, which are classified as class 5 felonies. Each count carries a sentence of three years and eight months. Lambros received credit for the 410 days he spent in jail prior to his guilty plea.

Lambros was arrested in October 2022 after law enforcement received a report in July of that year. The report alleged that Lambros had taken photos of an unconscious female patient who was exposed. Further investigation revealed that Lambros possessed a significant amount of data, including additional photos and videos. The U.S. Secret Service was called in to assist with processing this evidence. Lambros had worked as a nurse at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Grand Junction for a decade.

According to District Attorney Dan Rubinstein, the investigation indicates that there may be 13 victims in total, although only five have been identified so far. While not all victims could be identified by name, individual cases were established, and patients were located with the assistance of St. Mary’s.

Scott Burrill, the public defender representing Lambros, expressed that Lambros displayed remorse and honesty throughout the investigation. In conversations with Lambros and his siblings, Burrill discovered that Lambros had endured severe abuse during his childhood, which could potentially shed light on his client’s actions.

Burrill clarified that the plea deal experienced delays due to the challenges involved in analyzing the digital photos and videos presented as evidence. He emphasized that the reported 4 terabytes of data did not indicate an excessive amount of photos and videos, but rather the intricate manner in which the data was gathered and processed.

Former Grand Junction nurse pleads guilty to assaulting 13 unconscious victims

chris lambros travel and leisure

Updated at 5:40 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 8, 2023

A former Grand Junction nurse will spend two decades in prison for sexually assaulting unconscious patients beginning in 2016.

Christopher Lambros, 62, pleaded guilty Friday in Mesa County to six counts of attempted sexual assault, a class 5 felony, with each carrying a sentence of three years and eight months. Lambros was credited with 410 days of pre-sentence confinement on each count for the period he's been in jail prior to Friday's proceedings.

Some victims were in attendance for the sentencing. Ahead of the hearing, they waited outside the courtroom, exchanging hugs.

Of the six charges, five regarded a specific victim, while a sixth charge described the victim as “Jane Does,” referring to eight unidentified patients that were similarly abused. Colorado Public Radio does not identify the victims of sexual assault.

Lambros was arrested in October 2022. According to the arrest affidavit, law enforcement received a report in July of that year of him allegedly taking photos of an unconscious female patient whose breasts and genitalia were exposed.

Subsequent investigation found that Lambros had significant amounts of data that included more photos and videos, requiring the assistance of the U.S. Secret Service to process. Lambros was a nurse at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Grand Junction for 10 years.

Twenty-first Judicial District Attorney Dan Rubinstein said the investigation suggests 13 individual victims, but only five could be identified.

Rubinstein said not every victim could be identified by name, but they were able to identify individual cases and track down patients with the help of St. Mary’s.

One victim, J.V., said they would live with the experience the rest of their life.

“It will never go away for all of us victims,” J.V. said. “We will never heal completely from what he did to us.”

An employee walked in on Lambros assaulting a patient in 2022, prompting the investigation. In a statement to the court she said she and other St. Mary’s Medical Center employees have been guilt stricken since the crimes came to light.

“Since July 9, 2022, I’ve felt like I failed my patients,” they said.

In a statement Friday night, St. Mary’s said their commitment to patient safety “is unwavering and continues to be our highest priority.”

“Learning the charges that Christopher Lambros has pleaded guilty to is disheartening. We thank the Grand Junction Police Department for their work and we thank the 21st Judicial District Attorney’s Office in prosecuting the case,” the statement said.

Some victims are in the process of suing the hospital.

Scott Burrill, Lambros’ public defender, said Lambros was apologetic and forthright about the investigation. He said Lambros was severely abused as a child, according to conversations he had with Lambros and his siblings, which he said may explain his client’s actions.

“From the first day I met Mr. Lambros, he wanted to plead guilty and admit to what he’s done,” Burrill said.

For his part, Lambros said “I’m sorry and I hope people forgive me.”

Burrill explained there were delays in the plea deal because of the difficulty in parsing through digital photos and videos in evidence. Burrill noted that the significant volume of data, reported to be 4 terabytes, did not reflect an overwhelming cache of photos and videos, but rather the dense way the data was collected and processed.

The case was heard by Judge Gretchen Larson, who reflected on the severity of the case.

“This was the first I learned that some of the victims died,” Larson said. “The idea of these women being molested as they took their last breath is haunting to the court.”

One speaker told the court her daughter, who passed away in the intensive care unit, was one of the victims identified in the case.

Larson also commended the hospital employee for alerting authorities to Lambros’ behavior,

“It’s not your responsibility. The minute you found out you did the right thing and you reported it,” Larson said, adding that the guilt the witness felt showed “the depth of compassion” that healthcare workers can demonstrate.

Another victim, M.C., said of the witness: “She’s my angel.”

An intensive care nurse has been arrested and charged with sexual assault after he allegedly took photos and videos of his patients for a self-described “ Dexter collection”, according to authorities.

Christopher Lambros, a 61-year-old nurse, was taken into custody in Grand Junction, Colorado , on 25 October, following a months-long investigation by law enforcement which uncovered evidence of him allegedly assaulting patients while they were unconscious and taking photographs and videos of their naked bodies.

According to a probable cause affidavit, released by the Grand Junction Police Department this week, police were initially tipped off by a fellow employee at St Mary’s Hospital where he worked.

The employee, whose identity is redacted in the affidavit, called police on 9 July saying they had seen Mr Lambros “taking photos of a patient’s genitals” that evening while the patient was unable to consent.

“When she pulled back the curtain she saw the patient, who was unconscious, with her gown pulled up, exposing her breasts, and the bed sheet was pulled down, exposing the patient’s genitals,” the affidavit states.

The true story behind Netflix’s The Good Nurse: How Charles Cullen killed 29 patients in 16 years

“[The witness] said she saw a nurse, who she knew as Chris Lambros, with his head on the patient’s stomach, with his face toward the patient’s feet, with what she believed [was] his right arm extended, holding what she was sure was an unknown make/model cell phone in a black case, in a position as if he was taking a ‘selfie’ picture.”

The employee called police and an officer was dispatched to Mr Lambros’ home where he voluntarily consented to his photo applications being checked on his phone.

While there, the 61-year-old nurse attempted to explain away the accusations levelled against him by his co-worker, claiming that he’d been injecting the patient for blood clots, saying that the shot “is administered in the stomach area”, the affidavit states.

He also allegedly told the officer that he and the unnamed employee had some “petty workplace issues” which, he claimed, might explain her account of events.

The officer didn’t find any incriminating photos on the device but seized it as evidence for further testing, given that multimedia can be deleted from devices and stored on backup or alternative storage devices, the affidavit says.

Christopher Lambros, 61, is accused of sexually assaulting patients and taking pictures and videos of the assaults as part of his ‘Dexter collection’

Though Mr Lambros did not cooperate by providing authorities with his cellphone pin, a search warrant was obatined for the phone and a digital forensic analysis was ran on the device.

This digital analysis uncovered a trove of “photographs and videos of Lambros posing with a number of victims who were unconscious, in the hospital setting”, the affidavit states.

Investigators also found a number of deleted pictures that allegedly showed the 61-year-old “sucking on victims’ breasts and digitally penetrating victims”.

In one video taken in June, Mr Lambros allegedly alluded to the TV show Dexter , comparing his own alleged trove of photos and videos to that collected by the namesake character Dexter Morgan – a serial killer who kept blood slides from each of his victims.

“In video recovered from 6/24/2022 at 17:30 hours, Lambros can be heard whispering to the camera saying ‘don’t ever get rid of these videos’ and ‘you need to keep them forever… this is your Dexter collection,’” the affidavit states.

In total, 168 photos and videos taken between 30 April and 9 July and later deleted from the phone were uncovered.

St Mary’s Hospital fired Mr Lambros after he was taken into custody and released a statement condemning his alleged actions.

“What this former nurse is accused of is reprehensible and goes against everything we believe and value at St. Mary’s Medical Center,” said Bryan Johnson, President of St Mary’s Medical Center.

“Patients put their trust in us and should feel safe in our care. We are working closely with law enforcement to protect our patients from those who intend to cause harm.”

Mr Lambros has been charged with three counts of sexual assault. He is being held at Mesa County Jail on $250,000 bond.

Ex-Nurse Recorded Himself Sexually Assaulting Patients, Police Say

Christopher P. Lambros, 61, was charged with sexual assault after recording videos of himself assaulting unconscious female patients at a Colorado hospital, officials said.

A former nurse at a Colorado hospital has been charged with sexually abusing female patients while they were unconscious and with recording the assaults on video, the police said.

The former nurse, Christopher P. Lambros, 61, has been charged with three counts of sexual assault, according to the Grand Junction Police Department. He worked for 10 years at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Grand Junction, which is about 130 miles west of Aspen, until he was fired after his arrest in October, the hospital said.

The authorities have recovered about four terabytes of data — the equivalent of about 700,000 cellphone photos or about 65,000 hours of video — from Mr. Lambros’s devices, according to a class-action lawsuit against the hospital and the nonprofit organization that operates it. The suit was filed on behalf of two patients who said they were abused by Mr. Lambros.

The evidence, which includes sexually explicit videos, shows that Mr. Lambros’s sexual misconduct dates back to at least 2016, the lawsuit said.

Daniel P. Rubinstein, the Mesa County district attorney, said that Mr. Lambros had been charged with sexually assaulting two female patients and that prosecutors planned to “add more counts to one of the victims, and more victims,” once the investigation was completed.

Mr. Lambros, who was arrested on Oct. 25, has not yet entered a plea and remains in jail on $1 million bond, Mr. Rubinstein said. Mr. Lambros’s lawyer, Scott Burrill, who is with the Office of the Colorado State Public Defender, could not be immediately reached at phone numbers listed under his name on Saturday. The office says on its website that its policy is to not comment on criminal cases.

Intermountain Healthcare, the nonprofit organization that operates St. Mary’s Medical Center, said in a statement that the “safety of our patients is our highest priority, and we take this matter very seriously.”

“We have zero tolerance for anyone who engages in the abuse or mistreatment of our patients,” the statement said. “Immediately following the reported concern, the hospital placed Chris Lambros on administrative leave, removed his access to the hospital and patients and reported the matter to local law enforcement.”

The police said that officers had been dispatched on July 9 to St. Mary’s for a report of “potential sexual misconduct” after someone at the hospital had seen Mr. Lambros taking photos of a female patient’s genitals while she was unconscious in the intensive care unit.

A witness told the police that Mr. Lambros had placed his head on the woman’s stomach and was holding a phone in an outstretched arm as if he was taking a “selfie,” according to an arrest warrant.

When the witness entered the room, Mr. Lambros dropped the phone and covered the patient with a gown and a blanket, according to the warrant. The witness notified a supervisor.

Mr. Lambros later told the police that he was giving the patient an injection for blood clots in the stomach area, and he denied taking any pictures, the warrant said.

Investigators later executed a search warrant on Mr. Lambros’s phone and found videos and photos of him “posing with a number of victims” who were unconscious in the hospital, according to the warrant. Videos recovered show him sexually assaulting female patients, the warrant said.

In one video, Mr. Lambros can be heard whispering to the camera, saying “Don’t ever get rid of these videos,” “You need to keep them forever,” and “This is your Dexter collection,” according to the warrant. “Dexter” is the name of a television show about a serial killer who keeps trophies of his victims.

Mr. Lambros’s nursing license was suspended in November, according to state records .

The lawsuit said the hospital failed to identify warning signs that Mr. Lambros was sexually assaulting patients and that it did not have enough safeguards in place to ensure patient safety or to track medication that was dispensed.

Patients under Mr. Lambros’s care were often unconscious when it served no legitimate medical purpose, the lawsuit said, adding that Mr. Lambros “possessed and administered an unusually high volume of medications to patients.” The lawsuit does not specifically name the drugs that Mr. Lambros used, but it says that he used medications to render at least two victims unconscious.

According to the lawsuit, Mr. Lambros was not allowed to administer sedatives without a physician’s order, and the medication should have been logged in hospital records. He also drugged and assaulted patients in view of surveillance cameras, according to the suit, which was filed on Dec. 20.

Intermountain said in an email that St. Mary’s Medical Center did not use security cameras in patient rooms. The hospital uses “nonrecording, livestreaming-enabled cameras” as part of a telehealth program that lets critical care nurses check on patients remotely, Intermountain said.

Bryan Johnson, the hospital’s president, said in a statement that the hospital was “working closely with law enforcement to protect our patients from those who intend to cause harm.”

“What this former nurse is accused of is reprehensible and goes against everything we believe and value at St. Mary’s Medical Center,” Mr. Johnson said. “Patients put their trust in us and should feel safe in our care.”
