Chris Cornell to Embark on North American ‘Songbook’ Solo Tour

Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell has revealed plans for a North American solo tour kicking off this fall. The intimate ‘Songbook’ tour will showcase Cornell’s acoustic arrangements of songs throughout his career spanning close to 30 years, encompassing his work with Soundgarden in addition to his other musical projects including Audioslave , his solo releases and his work with Temple of the Dog.

Kicking off on Oct. 15 at the Balboa Theatre in San Diego, Calif. the 30-date run will make its way to venues throughout the U.S. and Canada. Cornell will be bringing along Bhi Bhiman, an American/Sri Lankan folk artist, to provide tour support.

The 'Songbook' tour allows fans to experience a different side of Cornell as he performs acoustic arrangements of songs throughout his massively successful career. This will also be the first time that Cornell has performed any of his new arrangements from Soundgarden’s latest disc ‘King Animal’ as a solo performer in the States.

In addition to offering up great live music, the tour will be supporting a few great causes too. A portion of the ticket sales for the 'Songbook' tour will benefit the Chris and Vicky Cornell Foundation, a non-profit organization Cornell started with his wife to aid children in need. One dollar of every ticket sold will go directly to the foundation with additional funds being donated to ChildHaven ’s Creative Music Therapy Program Expansion.

Cornell’s original 'Songbook' tour kicked off in 2011 and sold out very quickly. Tickets for the 2013 run will go on sale to the public on Aug. 16 with pre-sales beginning on Aug. 14. Visit Cornell’s website for more details and check out all the dates and tour stops below:

Soundgarden thrilled their legions of fans when they announced their unexpected reunion in 2010, but frontman Chris Cornell continued to pursue his solo career, with his first one-man tour of the U.S. resulting in the acclaimed live album, Songbook .

Listen to Songbook on Apple Music and Spotify .

The charismatic singer-songwriter first ditched the muscle and volume inherent in Soundgarden’s music in 1992, when he contributed the all-acoustic “Seasons” for the soundtrack to Cameron Crowe’s acclaimed movie Singles . After that, he’d been looking for further opportunities to create music in a similarly low-key setting.

Grander Than Ever: Grand Funk Outdo The Beatles At Shea Stadium

“I’d also recorded a version of [Soundgarden’s] ‘Like Suicide’ [that way] and ‘Spoonman’ [from Superunknown ] was written acoustically too,” he revealed to Spin magazine at the time of Songbook ’s release, on November 21, 2011. “The original demo was just acoustic guitars and hitting pots and pans. I thought that recording an album in that style was a good idea. But it wasn’t what I ended up doing on [debut solo album] Euphoria Morning . So, in the back of my mind, it was a promise to fans and myself that I wanted to make good on.”

As Hope And Promise Fade (Recorded Live At Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Toronto, ON on April 20, 2011)

Cornell turned his vow into a reality in 2011 when he embarked on an extensive 25-date acoustic tour of the U.S. and Canada during that year’s spring and early summer. In fact, he enjoyed these intimate shows so much that he later performed gigs in South America and Australasia, though the recordings which appeared on the Songbook album were sourced from a half dozen of the dates on his initial U.S. jaunt.

“My only criteria for picking these songs was that they needed to sound on tape just like they sounded live in the room, theatre or club,” Cornell told Spin . “So there are songs with mistakes – I hit the wrong chord or something like that. It was all about feeling and sounding just like it did in real life.”

Rather like Nirvana ’s widely-acclaimed MTV Unplugged In New York , Songbook was a revelatory experience for the listener. Armed with just an acoustic guitar and his sumptuous, acrobatic voice, Cornell stripped back his trademark arena-sized theatrics in favor of subtlety and intimacy, and weighed in with some of the most compelling music of his career.

I Am The Highway (Live At Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Toronto, ON/2011)

Though envisaged primarily as a low-key release for his fans, Songbook ’s wall-to-wall quality soon attracted widespread attention. It cracked the Top 75 of the Billboard 200 on the back of enthusiastic critical appraisals (including a rave review from Consequence Of Sound , which declared the album to be “a beautiful showcase of [Cornell’s] career that any music lover should have”) and it remains a stalwart cult favorite to this day.

“It blows me away that there’s this willingness by an audience – continually, night after night – to sit and listen to a guy singing a song, playing acoustic guitar quietly and not making a sound,” Cornell confessed to Billboard when Songbook was first released.

“Then between songs they’re shouting out [requests] and actually having a conversation with the guy on stage. It’s really something I didn’t expect and it’s something I really like. I didn’t realize it was going to be as special to me as it is.”

Chris Cornell Adds December US Dates to His Acclaimed “Songbook” Acoustic Tour

chris cornell songbook tour

On October 15th, Chris Cornell began his second North American “Songbook” acoustic tour in San Diego. The tour will continue throughout the month of November, and due to overwhelming demand, four additional December dates have been added to the run:

  • 12/2 Charlotte, NC @ Blumenthal Performing Arts - Knight Theater
  • 12/3 Atlanta, GA @ Center Stage
  • 12/5 Miami, FL @ Adrienne Arsht Center – Knight Concert Hall
  • 12/6 St. Petersburg, FL @ Mahaffey Theater

The “Songbook” tour is a series of intimate shows highlighting songs that Chris has written throughout his illustrious career, including a few surprise covers. This will also be the first time US fans will hear a handful of acoustic arrangements of songs from 2012's critically-acclaimed King Animal , Soundgarden’s first new studio album in over 16 years. American/Sri Lankan folk artist, Bhi Bhiman, has joined Cornell on the tour as the opener.

In the past month, Cornell has also made two special guest appearances on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon with the Avett Brothers. Additionally, Chris recently penned an original track for the film 12 Years A Slave , entitled “Misery Chain,” featuring Joy Williams of the Civil Wars. The soundtrack will be out digitally via Columbia Records on 11/5 and physically on 11/19.

“I was moved by this film and the story in a way that transcends any film experience I have ever had,” said Cornell. “I was inspired to write a hundred different songs, but finally landed on one based on what I believe is an extremely important message I took from this man’s journey. Compassion, basic human rights and love must be our priorities above race, religion or commerce. Every generation needs a reminder of that simple idea.”

Check out the track here:

Chris Cornell has the ability to connect with listeners like few others of our time. He has maintained his own unique identity over more than two decades as a singer, songwriter, and lyricist, and has contributed to the catalogs of celebrated rock bands Soundgarden, Audioslave and Temple of The Dog. As a solo artist, Chris has contributed original songs to multiple movie soundtracks, including the 2013 summer blockbuster Man of Steel , and became the first American male singer to write and perform the theme song for the James Bond franchise in Casino Royale . He was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for his original song, “The Keeper” written for the film Machine Gun Preacher and wrote the song “Live to Rise” performed by Soundgarden in the mega-hit Disney film The Avengers . Cornell also had the honor of performing at the 2008 Kennedy Center Honors Gala, and at the 2013 Obama Presidential Inaugural Ball.

CHRIS CORNELL: 'Songbook' Album Details Revealed

SOUNDGARDEN /ex- AUDIOSLAVE singer Chris Cornell will release an album of live "Songbook" tour performances on November 21 via Universal Music Enterprises . The set will feature Cornell 's own songs as well as a few covers. All fans who purchase their "Songbook" tour tickets online will receive a digital copy of the album with each order.

"Songbook" track listing:

01. As Hope And Promise Fade 02. Scar On The Sky 03. Call Me A Dog 04. Ground Zero 05. Can't Change Me 06. I Am The Highway 07. Thank You (LED ZEPPELIN cover) 08. Cleaning My Gun 09. Wide Awake 10. Fell On Black Days 11. All Night Thing 12. Doesn't Remind Me 13. Like A Stone 14. Black Hole Sun 15. Imagine (JOHN LENNON cover) 16. The Keeper

Cornell 's new song, "The Keeper" , is the lead single from the soundtrack to the movie "Machine Gun Preacher" . The film, which stars Gerard Butler as a former drug dealer who becomes a crusader for hundreds of refugee children in war-torn Sudan, opened on September 23.

Although Cornell has been recording a new album with SOUNDGARDEN for the first time in 15 years, he continues to work as a solo artist as well. He told Spin.com how it's different from playing with a band. "An acoustic show is all about you, and any little nuance or mistake is amplified," Cornell explained. "I'm very nervous about it, but I love the intimacy. Once you sit in front of people and start playing songs, it's all on you. No matter what happens, it's entirely your responsibility the entire time. I like that intensity."

Cornell told The Pulse Of Radio that he sees working with SOUNDGARDEN again as having a positive influence on his solo career. "One thing about a solo artist is you can just be in a room way too long with yourself and your own thoughts and your own songs, and it feels really good to be working with Ben ( Shepherd , bassist) and Matt ( Cameron , drummer) and Kim ( Thayil , guitarist) again, and it's actually a really nice reprieve also from just being alone, doing what I do," he said. "It's helping with the balance, I think, too."

Cornell has issued three solo albums. The last one, 2009's "Scream" , was trashed by critics and fans for abandoning Cornell 's rock roots for an urban pop sound.

Chris Cornell born Christopher John Boyle on 20 July 1964 is an American singer-songwriter and musician largely responsible for and associated with shaping the grunge movement in the 90s. While Cornell is best recognized for his work with Soundgarden and Audioslave, he also has a successful solo-career.

Cornell grew up in Seattle, Washington with his pharmacist father, accountant mother, and 5 brothers and sisters. He developed an early interest in music listening to the Beatles incessantly in elementary school and looking to this art form as a means to overcome his social anxiety. Like Chris his siblings also became involved in music. His two sisters Katy and Suzy and his brother Peter started a group in the 90s known as Inflatable Soul and has since gone on to pursue other projects.

Cornell started playing in bands in the 80s, one of his first being the Seattle cover act the Shemps. Future Soundgarden members bassist Hiro Yamamoto and guitarist Kim Thayil were also in the band though they never played with each other during this time. Cornell played drums in both groups, but recruited Scott Sundquist as Soundgarden’s new percussionist so he could assume the position as lead vocalist. Sundquist eventually left the band and was replaced by longstanding member Matt Cameron.

Soundgarden’s impact on alternative rock cannot be overstated. Alongside Nirvana, Alice in Chains, and the Melvins they transformed the ethos of hardcore punk and metal into something more restrained but equally subversive. They helped established the 90s alternative soundscape, being one of the first groups to be associated with the post-psychedelic genre of grunge. They were also one of few bands in this collective to land a recording contract with a major label like A&M.

The band’s first album was raw and aggressive, rightfully ending up on the influential punk label SST records. Their next release took a step towards the sludge ridden riffs found on Black Sabbath and Zeppelin records, but also featured a dislocating and haunting ambience heard from groups like Bauhaus. The group really broke into the mainstream and came into their own sound with the albums “Badmotorfinger”, “Superunkown”, and “Down on the Upside”.

Cornell found other mediums other than Soundgarden to express his musical talents. He endowed upon himself the role of a producer (engineering records for the Screaming Trees), acted as a writer for artists such as Alice Cooper and formed a side project with Mother Love Bone singer Andrew Wood entitled Temple of the Dog. Additionally he started composing solo material in the early 90s releasing his first song “Seasons” for the Cameron Crowe film “Singles”.

After Soundgarden broke up Cornell pursued his solo career full time and released his studio debut “Euphoria Morning” in 1999. The singer took a brief break from his career to focus on family life, but returned shortly to form the influential and widely popular band Audioslave. The group released three albums in their 6 years span. While their self-titled debut received mixed criticism, it was a fan favorite. The album went triple Platinum in the US and featured five singles with “Like a Stone” receiving a Grammy nomination. Their 2005 follow up “Out of Exile” did just as well, taking the No.1 spot on the Billboard 200 and their 2006 album “Revelations” matched the platinum status achieved by its preceding releases.

8 years later Cornell released his highly anticipated sophomore solo album “Carry On”. Within a year of its release it sold 121,000 copies in the US and 300,000 copies world wide. The style encompassed genres of hard rock, blues and psychedelia and even featured a cover of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean”. In some respects this cover acted as a premonition to the R&B influence that would seep into Cornell’s third album “Scream”.

Renowned pop producer Timbaland covered production on the album and integrated his signature funk driven electronic undertone into the mix. Justin Timberlake even made an appearance on the song “Take Me Alive”. Two years latter Cornell released a live album “Songbook”, which consisted of material spanning across his entire career.

Live reviews

I came to the show with my girl Melanie last night. I'm the guy that shouted, "Full on Kevin's Mom" and you said it couldn't be done without banjo's =) Anyhow, what I wanted to say was this, You are one of the best singers, period, to ever walk the earth. I was just blown away at how strong your voice still is and much more mature to boot. The first time I saw you was at the RIP Magazine Party at the Palladium in LA before you guys broke.. Just a stroke of luck I guess, My high school bandmate and I's parents were cool enough to let us scalp tickets and we somehow end up seeing Pearl Jam, Alice N Chains, Soundgarden and a version of Temple of the dog in one amazing unannounced night right before the whole scene exploded onto the world!!! We didn't even know who you guys were!!! (footnote, sugar tooth opened.) My only gripe is this man... the first 75 percent of your acoustic show last night, my jaw literally dropped a few times, but the last 25 percent, both of us were literally yawning. I think a little time spent in creating more peaks and valleys in the right places would benefit the entire show.. The last 5 songs and the entire encore might as well have been the same song. They stayed in the exact same energy, just droning... You are one of my wish list artists that I've always dreamed of working with, that being said, the show was unreal at the 3/4 mark and then it went downhill as opposed to leaving everyone on a high.. You have the power that very few people, that have ever walked the planet have, in regards to singing man ,and I've always loved your lyrics too brother.. You're a real down to earth guy just trying to find contentment like the rest of us, but in regards to your show, I really would love to see you have it set up to where you leave people with there minds absolutely blown the whole time and craving more after the show is over as opposed to , "Thank god it's over, I was falling asleep" (I don't think that's a terribly tough feet to accomplish either btw) They will still reminisce the great moments of the show, but leave us on a high man and I don't mean tempo wise capeesh? .. I want to make sure that you understand, that I'm a fan of yours Chris, my voice has always been compared to yours without quite the range unfortunately =) and my songwriting style is well, much different than yours as well, which is why I always thought writing would be fun. Anyhow, off that, I would have loved it if either the show ended at the 3/4 mark or some reworking went into the fluidity of the shows wave front to back? Just my thoughts man, take it or leave it.. But you are Indeed, a baaad man sir!

Have a great tour Chris,

Chris Cornell w/Bhi Bhiman at Lincoln Theatre, Nov 23, 2013

Eric and I went to the historic Lincoln Theater on U Street last night to see Chris Cornell of Soundgarden in an acoustic show.

We were blown away.

If you had asked me to name a single Soundgarden song before the show, I wouldn't have been able to do it, so I wouldn't call myself a fan. You know me: I am anti-nostalgia, always looking for the new music, not trying to relive my college years insisting that grunge was the pinnacle of rock. I should not be raving about that show, but I am. Chris Cornell was incredible live. Even if you don't recognize the name, if you lived through the 90s, you recognize the voice. It's distinctive and powerful. Wikipedia cites his 4-octave vocal range as what he's known for.Listen to 5 seconds of a tune and you'll say "oh yeah, that guy." Thing was, Mr. Cornell is also fantastic with a crowd. His banter left everyone in that 1,225 seat venue thinking they felt a personal connection to the man.

Anyway, the other part of the show that was fantastic was the covers. He did Billy Jean, Hotel California, and Metallica's One set to the tune for U2's One. Eric and I both felt they were extraordinary--like they brought new meaning to the songs. They weere all new arrangements, and I honestly liked each of them much better than the original. Cornell could make money releasing them - I would buy them - me - anti-nostalgia, new indie music girl would buy them and listen to them on repeat. That good.

Only bad part of the show was our location in the theater. We were in row N on the upper balcony. We couldn't see Cornell's face at all from that distance. My fault for forgetting to buy tix on presale day, but a big mistake. Take my advice and try hard for floor seats at Lincoln. This was the stage set up: seven guitars, a turntable, some amps, a stool, a coat rack, and a mysterious red phone on a little table. He put down the guitar and used a vinyl LP to back him up for two songs.

Just amazing!!

It was a special show for many reasons, first Chris came back to barcelona after many years of his last visit with Audioslave and his prior visit as a solo. He loves the city as he proudly told the audience. The other reason is that on that day Prince died and it was a shock for Chris and for all the audience like me who found out through him.... He dedicated the show to prince, singing his cover of Nothing compares 2 u and some other special songs for that occasion like, say hello to heaven, etc

It was also really nice as Chris share many personal experiences with the audience.., for example that time when he attended a Prince concert in Seattle with Andy Wood, who got nervous and threw up... He also invited his daughter Tony to come to the front to say hello to the audience.

In any case..., he performed around 26 songs, including many from Soundgarden, Temple of the dog, from his solo career and also some covers from Prince, the Beatles and Bob Dylan.

At the end he came close to the audience to sign some autographs and shake some hands....

For me it was also special as I had bought tickets for 2 other shows from this tour, in Utrecht and Antwerp which both were cancelled (so I travelled there for nothing)....., but in any case Chris Cornell still rocks as much as always and his voice is still awesome...

Chris Cornell is the famed lead vocalist and drummer of two hugely successful bands: Soundgarden and Audioslave. However, the musical legend has also paved quite the impressive solo career for himself, with three studio albums and a fourth coverage album of all his live performances. Although the album was a hit, it did little to recall the true brilliance of his live concerts. The only way to really capture Cornell’s sound is to go see him live. To go and see his impressive guitar skills, his rough and powerful vocals and his passion. To be front and centre for the heavy guitar riffs, the deep bass and the wild encore, with thousands of fans creaming for more only to roar when Cornell delivers. From ‘Nearly Forgot my Broken Heart’ to ‘Part of me’, featuring musical big shot Timbaland, to ‘Can’t Change me’ and ‘Scream’, Cornell’s songs all resonate perfectly on stage, creating the right atmosphere of smooth rock and frenzied excitement. The crowd were singing along, waving enthusiastically and applauding wildly with every breath Cornell took.

Chris Cornell is known by most as the lead singer and primary songwriter for the globally acclaimed rock outfit Soundgarden. He has been involved in a huge amount of projects away during Soundgarden's hiatus including co-writing a James Bond theme song. He had always been writing during his time with the band and after their demise in their late 90s all the pieces were in place for Chris to take off as a soloist.

Since then he has commanded his own following, sometimes exclusively away from the Soundgarden cult. His sound is quite different and although rock is very much at its centre, Chris puts his own unique spin on the genre and this has gone over well with the fans over the years. He has a wonderful sincerity when delivering his music which is soundtracked by that delightful acoustic guitar and a good selection of trained backing musicians. He covers a variety of musicians from his own Soundgarden and Audioslave to Mother Love Bone and The Beatles. It is a great evening of music with a truly special musician.

Chris is an amazingly talented musician, singer, and song writer. He played a variety of songs from his solo career, Soundgarden, Audioslave, Temple of the Dog. He also performed a number of covers including Bob Dylan, Metallica, and Led Zeppelin. He talked with the crowd and told several stories about his life and career. His accompanist was beautifully talented musician as well playing keyboards, mandolin, and the cello. His show was well over 2 hours in length. Beautifully done.

Chris Cornell never disappoints. He was truly engaging. His set list was amazing with a great mix of new music and classic favorites. His voice was spot on, hitting every high note with ease! Bryan Gibson's cello accompaniment perfectly complimented many tunes. I would have loved to have heard a few more of the new songs from Higher Truth, the 'album' is fantastic, but you can only fit so much music into two hours. An excellent show as usual! Easily 5 stars

This was the 2nd show of his Higher Truth tour that we were blessed to see in 8 months...This man is my musical hero, he is so diverse. Of course I love Soundgarden and Temple of The Dog songs most of all, which he kindly incorporates with his new stuff. He is filled with so much talent and thankfully loves to share it with the world!

Excellent of course. A great performer, lyricist, musician, and hot... Seen him 8 times with his solo career and more with all the bands. Never stops amazing me. He plays his own music and from the other groups- they are his songs. He covers Zep's "Thank you" nicely. The show was over 2 hours and I cannot wait to go back tonite.

Fantastic show, great setlist with most of the Cornell classics included! Had fantastic time, the show lasted more than one hour and forty minutes. Chris' voice was as strong as always, he performed some covers including Nothing Compares 2 u by late Prince.... All in all - Fantastic

Album Review: Chris Cornell – Songbook

chris cornell songbook tour

Soundgarden, Audioslave and Temple of the Dog front man and critically acclaimed solo rock legend Chris Cornell releases his new record this month following a tour that has taken the musician to all corners of the US. Songbook is the musicians fourth solo record and plays a live role within the stars already hefty catalogue showcasing a number of Cornell’s self penned material as well as a few covers thrown in for good measures and the odd Soundgarden hit.

Regarded as owning one of the most acclaimed and familiar voices in the rock arena and known for his belting vocals and impressive range, Cornell took to the road between March and May 2011 on the acoustic Songbook Tour and wowed audiences and critics with the intimately set performances and some of the best renditions are what is featured on this new release.

With so many songs to pick from Cornell’s chosen 16 to feature on the record couldn’t have been better chosen. From his own solo recordings we are given some outstanding acoustic versions in the form of Scar On The Sky which was taken from Cornell’s 2007 sophomore solo release as well as Ground Zero from his most recent 2009 Scream record. Both bode well amongst the acoustic versions here but it is without doubt the performance of Can’t Change Me that gets the big thumbs up. The only single that was released from Cornell’s debut solo record Euphoria Morning back in 1998 the song gets a huge crowd applause and insight from Cornell as he gives an introductory overview of the tracks conception. Cornell belts out some impressive notes on this one and backs up his standing as an iconic rock vocalist with ease.

Soundgarden’s nod comes together with the two notable tracks Fell On Black Days and the mammoth Grammy Award winning Black Hole Sun from the collectives breakthrough 1994 record Superunknown and both prove popular additions to the rock craving audiences that holler throughout the track-listing to the icon.

Cornell’s projects within the music world have been vast and with that comes every punters dream when attending one of the performers concerts as they get the opportunity of hearing a range of the musicians work tied together into a brimming set of hits. Putting his solo and Soundgarden hits to one side we are offered some of his time in Audioslave a band that he formed with Rage Against The Machine instrumentalists Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk. I Am The Highway is played gorgeously by Cornell as he delivers a track full of sentimentally drenched melodies while Like A Stone finds a place within the latter half of the record.

A treat for fans comes with Cleaning My Gun and applause is given to Cornell as he proclaims to the crowd ‘Here’s a song I wrote a while ago that’s never been on anything’ giving us a bit of an exclusive within the track-listing.

A couple of covers are thrown into the mix as Cornell takes on rock juggernaut’s Led Zeppelin’s Thank You and John Lennon’s iconic Imagine giving both tracks a new angle with Cornell’s husky vocals.

Songbook is an impressive mix of the old and the new with some impressive versions of some of the musicians most loved and rarely performed tracks as well as some outstanding covers that offer that extra something to a fans and music aficionado’s alike and come together to form yet another fantastic addition to the Chris Cornell catalogue.

Exclusive: Chris Cornell Premieres Tracks Off 'Songbook'

As he prepares for another solo acoustic Songbook Tour and the release of a “Songbook” album, Chris Cornell says he’s embraced a spirit of spontaneity and improvisation for these shows.

“I rarely use a set list,” the Soundgarden frontman tells Billboard.com . “If I had done, I’d rarely follow it. I’m lucky to get three songs out before I completely deviate from whatever it was that I was going to do — to the point where I don’t really plan anything. There are points in the set where I’ll do a song because it’s where I want it to be. It’s really something that we’re figuring out.”

“Songbook” will be released in three parts beginning with “Songbook EP 1” out Nov. 1, and “Songbook EP 2” following on Tuesday, Nov. 15. Listen to “Songbook EP 1” Here FIRST:

And by “we,” Cornell says he means himself and the fans who come out for the show.

“It blows me away that there’s this willingness by an audience — continually, night after night, just all over the country and even in different parts of the world — to sit and listen to a guy singing a song and playing acoustic guitar quietly, and not making a sound,” Cornell says. “And then between songs they’re shouting out (requests) and actually having a conversation with the guy that’s on stage. It’s really something I didn’t expect, and it’s something that I really like. I didn’t realize it was going to be as special to me as it is.”

Cornell says he hopes the Nov. 21 “Songbook” album — featuring 15 songs recorded during his spring tour plus a studio version of “The Keeper” from for the film “Machine Gun Preacher” — captures that spirit of his early shows. “I wanted to get the infancy of this out there, because it’s very sparse, very rough, very new,” Cornell explains. “All I was concerned about was finding versions of the songs that sounded like it felt like they sounded when I was there. It was something I wanted to give back, and I wanted to do it right away because I was just really knocked out by how it was received.”

The “Songbook” album includes the mix of Soundgarden (“Fell On Black Days,” ” “Black Hole Sun”), Audioslave (“Wide Awake,” “I Am the Highway,” “Doesn’t Remind Me”), Temple of the Dog (“Call Me a Dog”) and Cornell solo songs (“Scar On The Sky,” “Ground Zero”) that he performs at the shows, as well as versions of John Lennon’s “Imagine” and Led Zeppelin’s “Thank You,” drawn from the wide array of covers he’s done.

“Those are usually born from me just sitting around and rehearsing or sitting in a hotel room and just thinking about a song or warming up my voice or things like that,” Cornell says. “Sometimes it’s just on a whim; ‘I wonder how this would sound acoustically?’ and I feel like it’s something I would want to do live. And sometimes I’ll pull something out that I don’t actually really know and just sort of do it from memory.”

Cornell hits the road again by himself on Nov. 1 in Memphis, sandwiching four South American shows into the 30-date itinerary that also includes a Nov. 21 stop at New York’s Carnegie Hall and wraps up Dec. 17 in San Diego. After that, Cornell returns to work on the reunited Soundgarden’s new album — its first studio set since 1996 — which he says will likely come out in the spring of 2012.

Chris Cornell Q&A: Looking Back on ‘Grunge’

“It’s mostly done,” Cornell reports. “We just need to finish a couple of songs and mix it, so that will be happening probably over the holidays.”

As to what it sounds like, he says that, “It’s certainly not nostalgic. It’s definitely forward. It sounds to me exactly like it should sound — like we took a break and we got together and we’re making an album. I don’t think we’ve taken any dramatic new approaches to writing or recording, and yet there’s definitely changes. We’ve all had a decade-plus of more experience in writing and recording and took a long break… So it’s very refreshing and it feels to me like the next logical step in Soundgarden, creatively.”

Audiences at the upcoming Songbook Tour shows shouldn’t expect to hear previews of any of the new songs, however. “I think it’s definitely a Soundgarden record,” Cornell says, “and I wouldn’t want to take it out of that context just yet.”

The singer and frontman for Soundgarden, Chris Cornell also forged his own career after the band's initial break-up in 1997. Soundgarden had rightfully become one of rock's most popular bands on the strength of such albums as Badmotorfinger and Superunknown. And with each album, Cornell's vocals grew stronger -- farther away from heavy metal screaming and toward a true singing style. Euphoria Morning, his first solo album, was in the singer/songwriter mold, but he also pursued true pop music on 2009's Scream, with help from producer Timbaland. Cornell also joined forces with former Rage Against the Machine members as Audioslave, and continued recording and performing -- both as a solo artist and with a resurgent Soundgarden -- until his death in 2017. Posthumous releases like 2020's No One Sings Like You Anymore, Vol. 1 continued to celebrate his legacy as a powerful and expressive vocalist.

Born in Seattle on July 20, 1964, his music career didn't take shape until he was a teenager when he began playing drums in a local cover band. Although he spent most of his teenage years as a loner, rock music helped Cornell overcome his uneasiness around others. After dropping out of high school and working as a cook, Cornell laid the foundation for what would become the influential grunge band Soundgarden by the mid-'80s. Cornell assumed vocal duties for the group, with friend Hiro Yamamoto on bass, Kim Thayil on guitar, and eventually Matt Cameron on drums.

Along with the Melvins, Soundgarden was one of the first rock bands to slow down punk's youthful energy to a Black Sabbath-like crawl. Following the release of several recordings on various independent labels, Soundgarden also became one of the first bands of the Seattle underground to sign with a major label, A&M, which issued Louder Than Love in 1989. After the album's release, however, Yamamoto left and was first replaced by ex-Nirvana member Jason Everman, who was later ousted by Ben Shepherd. With Soundgarden's quintessential lineup in place, the group became one of rock's most popular bands on the strength of such albums as 1991's Badmotorfinger, 1994's Superunknown, and 1996's Down on the Upside. With each album, Cornell's singing grew stronger as he demonstrated a growing mastery of his multi-octave range.

From the start, however, Cornell's talents weren't limited to his work with Soundgarden. He organized a tribute for late Mother Love Bone singer Andrew Wood in the form of 1990's Temple of the Dog project, which featured a stripped-down sound and yielded the enduring hit "Hunger Strike."

Cornell's first officially released solo composition, the acoustic "Seasons," was the highlight of the 1992 motion picture soundtrack Singles. His bluesy voice also helmed a superb cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)" on the 1993 Stone Free: A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix compilation (under the pseudonym M.A.C.C.). Meanwhile, he found time to pen songs for other acts (including Flotsam & Jetsam and Alice Cooper) while also producing the Screaming Trees' 1991 release, Uncle Anesthesia. After Soundgarden's demise in April 1997, Cornell slowly but surely began to assemble a solo album with his friends from the band Eleven.

Issued in 1999, Euphoria Morning was a departure from his former band's sound, emphasizing Cornell's vocals and lyrics rather than meaty guitar riffs. Shortly after its release, Cornell launched his first solo tour, mixing songs from all eras of his career. After the tour's conclusion in early 2000, a tepid remix of the Euphoria Morning track "Mission" (retitled "Mission 2000") was included on the Mission Impossible 2 soundtrack. It appeared as though Cornell would take a break from music for a while, as his wife gave birth to the couple's first child in June of the same year, but by late 2000, Cornell found himself involved in a project that promised to be a classic hard rock collaboration.

Rage Against the Machine had decided not to break up after longtime vocalist Zack de la Rocha left the band, opting instead to find another singer and carry on under a different name. Cornell accepted an invitation to jam and pen a few songs (which former Rage guitarist Tom Morello described as "really groundbreaking") and, shortly thereafter, officially joined forces with the former Rage members under the moniker Audioslave. Produced by Rick Rubin, the band's self-titled debut arrived in November 2002 and went multi-platinum. The follow-up effort, 2005's Out of Exile, debuted at number one on the Billboard charts and was followed by the platinum-selling Revelations in 2006. Despite such success, Cornell left the band that same year, citing the usual "irreconcilable differences" for his departure.

Cornell returned to his solo career with 2007's Carry On. Although the album was largely biographical, it also featured a cover of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" (a rendition made famous one year later by American Idol contender David Cook) and a song from the James Bond movie Casino Royale. Two new singles, "Ground Zero" and "Watch Out," were offered as digital downloads one year later, featuring a newfound emphasis on electronics and studio trickery. The tracks had been recorded with producer Timbaland, with whom Cornell partnered for the creation of his third solo album. Stocked with drum machines and R&B melodies, Scream arrived in March 2009, heralded by Timbaland as "the best work I've done in my career" but received poorly by several critics.

The following year, Soundgarden joined the many popular '90s alternative bands who reunited in the 2000s and 2010s, headlining that year's Lollapalooza festival and releasing the retrospectives Telephantasm and Live on I-5, which documented the group's 1996 tour, as well as recording new songs. The following spring, however, Cornell returned to his solo career with the solo acoustic Songbook tour, from which came two EPs and the Songbook album, all of which were released in 2011. That September, Cornell contributed a song to the Machine Gun Preacher soundtrack. King Animal, Soundgarden's first album since Down on the Upside, appeared in November 2012 and the group supported the record with a tour. Cornell returned to his solo work in 2015, teaming with producer Brendan O'Brien to record Higher Truth, his first collection of original solo songs since 2009's Scream.

Cornell returned to Soundgarden in 2016, and the band began work on a new album. In the meantime, the group released a deluxe reissue of Ultramega OK in March 2017 and began an American tour that April. On May 17, following the band's concert at Detroit's Fox Theater, Cornell was found dead in his hotel room; he had taken his own life at the age of 52. The following year, a legacy compilation chronicling Cornell's career arrived in the form of Chris Cornell, which included key tracks from his Soundgarden and Audioslave eras, as well as touchstones from his decades-spanning solo career and a previously unreleased song. One of those tracks, "When Bad Does Good," won Best Rock Performance at the 61st Grammy Awards.

Posthumous projects from Cornell began to arrive in 2019, when the Soundgarden album Live from the Artists Den arrived that summer. In 2020, a covers album called No One Sings Like You Anymore, Vol. 1 that Cornell completed prior to his death was released digitally; a physical version followed in early 2021. The set and single "Nothing Compares 2 U" were both nominated for Grammy Awards in 2021. ~ Greg Prato
