At 79, Rod Stewart shows no signs of slowing down, with a new swing album with Jools Holland

Rod Stewart is showing no signs of slowing down. The 79-year old crooner continues his world tour, recently collaborated with Jools Holland on “Swing Fever,” and says “retirement” is not in his vocabulary. (Feb. 22)

NEW YORK (AP) — Sir Rod Stewart will not be slowed.

At 79, he continues full-throttle with a busy year. Highlights in 2024 include his 200th show at his Las Vegas residency, an ongoing world tour and a new swing album.

“Swing Fever” is a collaboration with Jools Holland and the talk show host-musician’s Rhythm & Blues Orchestra and tackles some timeless tunes from the Big Band era, like “Pennies From Heaven,” “Lullaby of Broadway” and “Sentimental Journey.”

No stranger to the American songbook, Stewart had one request for Holland: “I’m not going to do any slow songs,” Stewart said. “I want all upbeat happy song, which we need in these grim times that we live in.”

Stewart expressed gratitude singing songs crafted at a time when a songwriter was a specific job, before bands wrote their own.

Holland, who began his career with the 1980s band, Squeeze, joked on how the paradigm shifted.

“I think the Beatles were to blame. I think everybody thought they could write songs after that. So bands always kept doing it,” Holland said.

Stewart, who has written his share of hits, was happy to concentrate on crooning.

Stewart was recently in New York, and before heading off to a downtown pub to watch his beloved Celtic soccer team take on rivals Hibernian, he took some time to chat with The Associated Press about making music, maintaining his health and whether there’s retirement in his future.

AP: What was the appeal of going back to these tunes?

STEWART: They make you tap your feet. They make you smile. Both of us (Holland) were brought up on this music. I did “The Great American Songbook,” so for me this was a natural progression. And one thing I said to Jools was, I’m not going to do any slow songs, I want all upbeat, happy (claps his hands) which we need in these grim times that we live in.

AP: What was it like doing this record?

STEWART: I love the whole process of doing live shows. I love recording. I loved when we put this album together. It was such a joy. We didn’t have any arguments or fights or anything like that. It was pure pleasure and I think that comes across when you listen to it. The whole thing was recorded live in Jools’ studio, which is not a big studio. We had 18 people crammed in there, so all the solos were played live.

AP: Was it freeing to perform songs from an era where songwriters were a separate entity?

STEWART: I’ve always found songwriting a bit of an agony, really. It’s like going back to school. In fact, when I was in the Faces, they used to lock me in a hotel room with a bottle of wine and say, “You’re not coming out ‘till it’s finished.” Because I was notorious. I wanted to go out and enjoy myself alone. I didn’t want to sit in a room and write lyrics and it’s always been a bit of like pulling teeth for me. The joy of this album, obviously, is I didn’t write any of the songs, I had a burning ambition to sing them and I picked the right guy.

AP: Over the years, you’ve garnered a large female audience, when did you realize that was happening?

STEWART: Probably right after “Maggie May,” I think. No, with the Faces, without a doubt because it was a good-looking-band, the Faces. I didn’t think any of us were good looking, quite honestly. I still don’t. But we did have some magical appeal to women. It was great fun. You should have been there. (Laughs)

AP: Did your health scare a few years back change anything?

STEWART: It’s all part of getting older. My thoughts at the moment are with our king who’s got some sort of cancer. But I’ve made a promise to myself since I was really young. I’ve always played soccer, and I still do. I play with my kids as well. I keep myself really fit. I work out a bit. I’m mad about nutrition, watching my weight and everything. So I do work at it, and I think that helps a lot. And do your due diligence. You know, men are notorious for not wanting to go to the doctors. You should.

AP: That sounds pragmatic. Do you have any worries about staying healthy?

STEWART: I’m not obsessed by it. I mean, none of us want to pass on. You do think about that as you get older, but not in a morbid way. I’m not frightened of dying, but I’m just enjoying myself so much. I feel absolutely privileged to be doing what I’m doing.

AP: There was talk a few years ago about a country record. Any truth to that?

STEWART: I plan on doing it. We actually started it. We started making a country album. And I went off and made another solo album, but yeah, it’s in the pipeline. The record company would like me to do it. They don’t push me to do it. You know, there will come a time.

AP: What is it about that music?

STEWART: Once again. it’s what I grew up with. You know, not so much country music, but folk music. You know, the likes of Woody Guthrie and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott and Bob Dylan. Of course, I loved all that stuff. That’s all. That’s why I learned how to play guitar, because I wanted to sing the songs.

AP: Is there an end in sight, do you see a point where you would retire?

STEWART: Not really. I suppose, I mean it wouldn’t be for me to judge, but I imagine if people stop buying tickets for concerts and don’t buy records anymore maybe that’s a sign. I don’t know. The word retirement is not in my vocabulary at the moment because I’m enjoying myself.

Rod Stewart in Concert

With his 1978 No. 1 single, Rod Stewart famously asked the world "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" 100 million record sales later, it's safe to say the world answered "Yes." As one of the top-selling artists of all time, with a career spanning four decades, the British singer-songwriter is one of the most celebrated figures in rock and roll history. The times may have changed, but Stewart's appeal hasn't - with his 28th studio album, 2013's Time, the raspy crooner once again topped the UK Albums Chart - the first time he'd done so since the release of his Greatest Hits Volume 1 in 1979. Stewart got his start as a solo artists in the early '70s, achieving his first mainstream success with blues rock hit "Maggie May" from 1971's Every Picture Tells a Story. In the late '70s and early '80s, the singer would adopt disco and new wave influences to much success, including the 1978 No. 1 Blondes Have More Fun and 1981's Tonight I'm Yours, which featured the hit "Young Turks." On tour, Stewart treats ticket buyers to rollicking sets of his greatest hits, proving that "Rod the Mod" still knows how to give one heck of a live concert.

Reviews 10000

Rod stewert was great.

I thought the event was amazing and had zero complaints until I walked outside and saw everybody’s umbrellas thrown out in a puddle of mud. This had to be done by the event. I felt they could’ve placed the umbrellas under the tents they had outside that were out of the direct traffic of the doors.

YOU GO ROD!! Great Show!!!

I have seen Sir Rod 2 times before this show and It has been probably 35+ years since I last saw him in concert. I wasn't sure what to expect when I read the reviews, but I really enjoyed the show and thought it was super entertaining! His band and singers were awesome and with no opening band, he did take a few breaks during the show which gave his band a time to perform. The band and musicians, including an awesome Saxophone player were so entertaining, I didn't mind. Rod moved around and did a little dancing and few kicks! He just has so much carisma and is such a great performer! I didn't mind him singing other hit songs that were not his. He did perform several of his hits, which had the almost 'sold out' crowd singing along! Different to reviews I read, He introduced the band, and although no oncore, he did thank the crowd and was very gracious. The show was almost 2 hours ! Overall I thought it was fantastic..it definately had a Las Vegas feel, but we had a great time.. The man is 79 and looked great and I AM SO GLAD I got to see him one last time! A long time fan!!

Still awesome

There’s a reason he’s a legend. Still has his voice and a great showman. Hope he has a few more tours left in him.

Great show-lousy venue

The music of Rod Stewart never disappoints. I’ve been a fan for 40+ years. I love to dance and sing. The show was different but the talent of Rod Stewart and his band was amazing. He is still doing the same moves he did in the ‘80s. The venue was not great. Daily’s Place in Jacksonville was in disrepair and it was leaking rain water into the venue. I wasn’t able to sit in my seat, due to water dripping down on me. My friend and I had to travel around the venue looking for an empty seat. This was difficult because the concert was sold out. Guest Relations gave me a poncho and said that they couldn’t do anything else. The music was amazing, but the experience was less than enjoyable because of the leaking venue.

Best Time Ever

The Rod Stewart concert was fantastic. It was so much fun, the people were great. Everyone working there was so courteous.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Saw Rod Stewart at Hard Rock-Tampa

Venue size was great-but projected image of him performing was not in sink with his actual singing-and acoustics were not grit-hard to pick up lyrics..and although he was energetic and posed for selfies while performing, at the end after he sang his as it turned out, last song, he danced off the stage, not to come back for applause or an encore. Left us all flat.

Great show!

Rod is in good shape and good voice. The band was great.

Fun set list. At 79, Rod's performance was as expected: Full of energy even if a little slowed by age. A few breaks while the back-up singers did a couple of tunes. Could have run a bit longer than 1:45 or so.

Glad I went to see him, but was disappointed in his set selection. I was hoping for more of his early catalog. He did Maggie Mae, but I would’ve liked some deeper cut from that album and from Gasoline Alley and from the Faces. Oh well. Our 80-year-old president can’t even make it up the stairs, and this guy at 79 was prancing all over the stage not to mention he had three or four wardrobe changes within the night. And his band and backup singers were excellent.

Awesome Entertainer

Always love seeing Rod Stewart shows! Have been for 40 plus years! He’s a great entertainer!

Recent tour reviews

I paid 132 euro each for the best view. BIG MISTAKE.

No seats and the the area was overcrowded. Stewards were useless. Lots of people without Front Stage Passes came into the area which meant we had a very poor view.

Police refused us access to disabled parking even though we showed them the badge so we had to park at the Miramar and get a taxi. When we were drooped off we were next to the disabled parking where there were still spaces available. No doubt being saved for friends of the police.

We could not see the support act as they were not on the stage but performed at the far side of the venue. We could not leave our position or we would have had no view at all for the main show.

The main show was due to start at 10pm but started at 10.25. We were told by Rod Stewart he would play for 2 hours. The show ended at 12.05 !

Our friends who paid 85 euros for seats fared little better being surrounded by noisy drunks who the stewards refused to deal with.

When you promote an artist who is over 70 you should realise his fans are the same age and the facilities were woeful. Standing for over 4 hours is unacceptable.

Took my daughter for her birthday absolutely amazing show we danced all night. Well worth the aches this morning. Rod sang all his old ones and a few new ones and really got the crowd singing along.

I would definitely recommend to go see him before he stops touring although I don’t think he will. The only bad point which will have nothing to do with rod himself was that leaving the carpark was horrendous. Not very carefully thought out at all badly organised. It took us an hr and 40 minutes just to get a few yards out of the car park and on to the road. Great night though wouldn’t have missed it for the world.

This was amazing! A true honour to see Rod in full flight. It was the first night of a 5 month tour and there were a few minor technical glitches but Rod, as the charismatic entertainer he is managed to make a joke about them and and make the audience feel like we were all participating in the show together. He made relatively large stadium feel like a small intimate gig. At 74 I dare say he doesn't have the physical stamina of a Bruce Springsteen but it balances this out by giving plenty of time for solos and individual performances to his incredible band. This was a well crafted show that had the entire audience on their feet dancing by the end. Will definitely see him again if I get the opportunity!

Founded in 1974, CHEAP TRICK is an indisputable American institution, beloved around the globe for its instantly identifiable, hugely influential, brand of pop-rock 'n' roll. The bandmembers are true pioneers with an unparalleled streak of certifiably classic tunes, from "He's A Whore" , "California Man" and "Dream Police" to "Surrender" , "I Want You To Want Me" and the worldwide No. 1 hit single "The Flame" .

2016 saw CHEAP TRICK inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame , a long-overdue acknowledgment of a nearly five-decade career that has earned them more than 40 international gold and platinum certifications, myriad awards and industry honors, featured appearances on over 20 movie soundtracks, and total record sales well in excess of 20 million.

CHEAP TRICK 's current lineup includes three of its original members: singer Robin Zander , guitarist Rick Nielsen and bassist Tom Petersson . Drummer Bun E. Carlos stopped touring with the band in 2010 and was replaced by Nielsen 's son Daxx . Rounding out CHEAP TRICK 's current touring lineup is Robin Zander 's son, Robin Taylor Zander , on rhythm guitar and vocals.

Rod Stewart points a microphone at the crowd in front of backup guitarists.

Rod Stewart still has gas left in the tank.

Although the 78-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s children have begged him to retire, he’s going back on the road in 2024.

As of now, the legendary knighted “Maggie May” singer has lined up 13 concerts from February through August next year.

However, fans should make a point of seeing the classic singer live in the U.S. before it’s too late.

“This will be the last time ’round, I think, to do the rock ‘n’ roll stuff because I want to move on to swing music and the Great American Song Book,” Stewart told People Magazine .

“No more big tours. I’ve said farewell to Australia and New Zealand and Mexico, so it’s time to say farewell to the U.S. now.”

Whether he makes good on that promise is anyone’s guess.

All we know is that Stewart puts on an incredible show that must be seen live to truly be appreciated.

Want to see him next year?

Here’s everything you need to know and more about Sir Rod The Mod’s 2024 tour schedule.

Rod Stewart 2024 tour schedule

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues and links to buy tickets can be found below.

Rod Stewart setlist

With a career that spans seven decades and a few bands — remember the Jeff Beck Group and The Faces? — Stewart clearly has his pick of the litter when it comes to selecting songs he’ll perform at concerts.

What has he been opening with lately? Which songs make up his encore? Does he play covers?

Great questions.

You can find a complete archive of all of Stewart’s set lists from 1975 all the way to today  here .

Rod Stewart new music

In 2021, the tireless Stewart released not one but two records, as well as a  Greatest Hits album .

The first offering,  “Cupid,”  is 16 songs of romance. Featuring choice Cat Stevens and Van Morrison covers as well as a few originals, it’s a perfect accompaniment to any Valentine’s Day.

Album two — the 31st of his storied career — is the more traditional pop record  “The Tears of Hercules.”   AllMusic  called the 12-track record “alternately baffling, absurd, sweet, and endearing.”

Classic rockers on tour in 2023

Many stars who performed all the way back when the Baby Boomers were just well-meaning, long-haired teens are still out and about on the road.

Here are just five of our favorites you won’t want to miss when they come to a city near you next year.

•  Rolling Stones

•  Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band

•  The Eagles

•  Billy Joel

•  Stevie Nicks
