Plant the Safari Rose Aloe for the beautiful statement-worthy flowers or because this drought-tolerant plant is the perfect addition to a Xeriscape garden. This fast-growing succulent is a repeat bloomer that boasts thick, succulent foliage in shades of green with hints of grayish-blue and soft teeth along the edges. The foliage is plenty of reason to enjoy this low maintenance plant, but this Aloe flowers from summer to mid-winter. Showy flower spikes grow up to 1.5 feet tall and are covered in tubular rose-pink blossoms.

As a succulent, Aloe is drought-tolerant, making it an excellent landscape plant in naturally dry areas or locations that have limited water. The Safari Rose Aloe is also heat-tolerant, allowing it to thrive in warm climates, like in the South. Enjoy the striking good looks and use this plant as a focal point in rock gardens, mass plantings, as ground cover, or in a container.

Safari Rose Aloe Plant Care

Plant the Safari Rose Aloe in full sun to part shade and use sandy or rocky soil. This plant likes to dry out, so lots of light and well-draining soil help it thrive. Newly planted Aloe will need water once or twice a week for the first growing season, but the plant will need very little water or care once established. This clump-forming plant does not require pruning, so remove any damaged growth, but otherwise let it do its thing. Fertilize annually in the spring to start the growing season off strong.

The Safari Rose Aloe grows as a perennial in USDA zones 9 through 11. This plant is not winter-hardy in other zones, so it will need to be brought inside to overwinter. When spending the winter indoors, place the Safari Rose Aloe in a spot with bright indirect light and average or low humidity. Let the soil completely dry out before watering.

Safari Rose Aloe Plant Spacing

This is a large plant that can reach heights of 1.5 feet and grow to be 3 feet wide. Plan accordingly and select a spot that can handle a large plant, but also make sure it will not block light or interfere with smaller plants. Space this Aloe 2 feet apart when planting to create a consistent border or wall of plants or space plants 4 feet apart to allow for room between each plant.

Plant Shipping

Below are some factors we consider when determining when to ship the plants depending on the timing of the order.

Winter to Early Spring

We ship only when it's warm enough to plant in your growing zone. Sometimes plants aren't completely ready to sell and ship in early spring. We will wait until the plants are ready before shipping so you don't get a subpar product. For Southern plants we will be able to ship much earlier than plants coming from our northern nursery.

If there is extreme heat we may delay shipping for a week or several weeks. We review what areas the plants are traveling through as well as your location.

Fall into Winter

We’ll ship plants out all the way up to the end of the fall planting season!

Get your order in early to reserve your plants for Spring planting!

Once your plant is shipped you’ll receive an automated email with tracking information.

Safari Rose Aloe Care Guide

Safari Rose Aloe Image

Safari Rose Aloe , a unique and captivating succulent, is renowned for its ease of care and striking appearance. This guide provides essential insights into nurturing and maintaining this plant, ensuring it thrives and adds a touch of nature’s beauty to your space.

Table of Contents

What is safari rose aloe.

Safari Rose Aloe Image

Safari Rose Aloe is a distinctive succulent known for its rosette-shaped foliage and vibrant coloration. Originating from arid regions, it boasts a moderate growth rate and a long lifespan. Typically, it reaches a modest size, making it perfect for indoor spaces or small gardens. Its resilience and adaptability to various environments make it a popular choice among plant enthusiasts.

Growing Conditions for Safari Rose Aloe

Light for safari rose aloe.

Safari Rose Aloe prefers bright, indirect sunlight. In its natural habitat, it is accustomed to the bright, filtered light of the sun. When grown indoors, a south or west-facing window is ideal. If natural light is insufficient, especially in winter, supplementing with a grow light can be beneficial. During the intense summer months, it may require some shading to prevent leaf scorch.

Soil for Safari Rose Aloe

The ideal soil mix for Safari Rose Aloe should be well-draining and aerated. A recommended mix is:

  • 50% potting soil
  • 25% perlite or pumice

This combination ensures adequate drainage and prevents root rot, which is crucial for the health of this succulent.

Temperature and Humidity for Safari Rose Aloe

Safari Rose Aloe prefers warm temperatures ranging from 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C). It can tolerate temperatures as low as 50°F (10°C), but it’s important to protect it from frost. This plant does not require high humidity and can thrive in the typical humidity levels found in most homes. During winter, it’s important to keep it away from cold drafts and provide some protection if the temperatures drop significantly.

General Care of Safari Rose Aloe

Watering safari rose aloe.

Watering is crucial for Safari Rose Aloe. Follow these guidelines:

  • Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
  • Water deeply, ensuring excess water drains out.
  • Reduce watering frequency in winter, as the plant enters a dormant phase.

Fertilizing Safari Rose Aloe

Fertilizing helps in providing essential nutrients:

Frequency: Fertilize during the growing season (spring and summer) once every month.

Type of Fertilizer: Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength.

Repotting Safari Rose Aloe

Repotting is necessary for continued growth:

  • Choose a pot one size larger than the current one.
  • Ensure the pot has adequate drainage holes.
  • Repot in spring or early summer for best results.

Pruning Safari Rose Aloe

Pruning is important for health and aesthetics:

Pruning Damaged or Old Growth

  • Identify any dead, damaged, or diseased leaves.
  • Use clean, sharp scissors or pruning shears.
  • Cut the unwanted leaves at the base, near the stem.

Pruning for Growth Promotion

  • Prune in the early spring to encourage new growth.
  • Trim off any overgrown or leggy branches.
  • Shape the plant to maintain its aesthetic appearance.

How to Propagate Safari Rose Aloe?

Propagating Safari Rose Aloe is a rewarding process that allows you to create new plants from an existing one. There are two primary methods of propagation for Safari Rose Aloe: leaf cuttings and offsets. Here’s a step-by-step guide for both methods:

Propagation Through Leaf Cuttings

  • Select a Healthy Leaf: Choose a healthy, full-grown leaf from the Safari Rose Aloe plant. Ensure the leaf is free from any signs of damage or disease.
  • Cut the Leaf: Using a clean, sharp knife or scissors, cut the leaf at an angle near the base of the plant.
  • Let the Cutting Dry: Place the cut leaf in a warm, dry place away from direct sunlight. Allow the cut end to dry and form a callous, which usually takes a few days to a week.
  • Prepare the Soil: Fill a pot with a well-draining succulent or cactus mix.
  • Plant the Leaf: Once the cut end has calloused, plant the leaf cutting in the soil. Bury about a quarter of the leaf in the soil.
  • Water Sparingly: Water the soil lightly to moisten it, but avoid overwatering. The soil should be kept slightly moist but not soggy.
  • Provide Adequate Light: Place the pot in a location where it receives bright, indirect sunlight.
  • Wait for Root Development: It can take several weeks to a few months for roots and a new rosette to form at the base of the leaf.

Propagation Through Offsets

  • Locate Offsets: Look for small offsets, or “pups,” growing around the base of the parent Safari Rose Aloe plant. These are essentially small clones of the parent plant.
  • Separate the Offsets: Gently remove the offsets from the main plant. You can usually do this by hand, or use a clean, sharp knife if they are firmly attached.
  • Let the Offsets Dry: Allow the offsets to dry for a few days until the cut area forms a callous.
  • Plant the Offsets: Plant the offsets in a well-draining succulent or cactus mix, similar to the leaf cutting method.
  • Water and Care: Water the offsets lightly and place them in a location with bright, indirect sunlight. Care for them as you would a mature Safari Rose Aloe.

Tips for Successful Propagation

  • Ensure all tools used for cutting are clean to prevent infection.
  • Avoid direct sunlight initially as it can scorch the new plants.
  • Be patient, as propagation can take time.

By following these steps, you can successfully propagate Safari Rose Aloe, expanding your collection or sharing with friends and fellow plant enthusiasts.

How to Get Safari Rose Aloe to Bloom?

Step 1: ensure adequate lighting.

  • Necessity: Safari Rose Aloe requires plenty of bright, indirect sunlight to bloom. Insufficient light is a common reason for lack of flowering.
  • Solution: Place your plant in a location where it receives several hours of indirect sunlight daily. If natural light is limited, especially in winter, consider using a grow light.

Step 2: Provide Proper Watering and Fertilization

  • Necessity: Over or under-watering, as well as inadequate nutrition, can stress the plant, leading to poor flowering.
  • Solution: Water the plant only when the soil is dry to the touch and reduce watering in the winter. Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer during the growing season, but avoid over-fertilizing, which can harm the plant and inhibit blooming.

Step 3: Maintain Appropriate Temperature and Rest Period

  • Necessity: Safari Rose Aloe blooms best when it experiences a period of cooler temperatures and less water in the winter, mimicking its natural dormant period.
  • Solution: During winter, keep the plant in a cooler but not freezing environment (around 50-60°F or 10-15°C) and reduce watering. This rest period is crucial for the plant to set buds.

Additional Tips for Encouraging Blooms

  • Mature Plant: Remember that young plants or recently propagated plants may not bloom. Safari Rose Aloe typically blooms when it reaches maturity.
  • Repotting: Avoid frequent repotting as this can stress the plant. Repot only when necessary, preferably in the spring.
  • Pruning: Remove any dead or dying leaves to encourage the plant’s energy to focus on blooming.

By following these steps and maintaining consistent care, your Safari Rose Aloe should eventually reward you with its stunning flowers. Patience is key, as some plants may take several years to bloom for the first time.

How to care for Safari Rose Aloe in winter?

Caring for Safari Rose Aloe during winter involves a few key adjustments to its regular care routine to accommodate the plant’s natural dormancy period. Firstly, reduce watering significantly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings, as the plant’s water needs decrease in cooler temperatures. Ensure it’s placed in a spot where it can still receive bright, indirect light, although the intensity of light will be lower during winter months. Protect the plant from cold drafts and freezing temperatures — ideally, keeping it in a room that stays above 50°F (10°C). Avoid fertilizing during this time, as the plant’s growth slows down and it requires fewer nutrients. By following these guidelines, your Safari Rose Aloe should stay healthy through the winter and be ready to grow vigorously in the spring.

Cape Town Travel Guide: Where To Stay, Eat Drink And Safari In The South African City

C ape Town is a cultural melting pot, increasingly celebrated for its art, food and fashion, as well as being a natural wonder, home to stunning scenery - mostly associated with the ever-dominating Table Mountain that looks out over the city - incredible land and ocean wildlife, which offer the opportunity to get up close with safari options and beautiful beaches just a stone's throw from the metropolis.

Though it is a 12-hour flight from London, it has just a one-hour time difference meaning that it is far enough away to feel like you're exploring somewhere totally different and yet there is no jet lag to acclimatise to. This makes it an ideal long-haul location , especially if you're wanting to escape when the temperatures drop in the UK and start heating up in Cape Town (the hottest months of the year are January to March). Plus, there's no visa requirements for UK citizens.

All in all, it's very straightforward as far as far-away adventures go. Unlike other long haul trips where you might opt for multi-destination holidays to justify the lengthy travel time, there isn’t the need to do this in Cape Town. It has everything - food, beach, nature, adventure and wine - all within a short radius.

Sold yet? You're not the only one. It’s no surprise that in the aftermath of the pandemic, people have flocked to the African city, with January to June 2023 exceeding pre-pandemic levels by 104%, welcoming 1.4 million international visitors. Most visitors come from the UK, with an estimated 70,000 British tourists opting for Cape Town as their holiday destination in the first four months of 2023 alone.

Here's everything you need to know, from hotels to restaurants to safari in Cape Town:

Hotels in Cape Town

The Silo Hotel

Found in the trendy V&A waterfront area of the city, this former grain factory offers stunning 360° views of Table Mountain to across the water of Robben Island. An ideal city hotel, the rooms have everything you need and its delicious breakfast is first-class, setting you up perfectly for a day of sightseeing and exploring. The rooftop sky terrace is a must-visit for guests. In the winter, enjoy the view while cosying up with a blanket and glass of wine from the bar. In the summer, make use of the pool, which can also be found up there.

As well as boasting its own art collection - you can also have a private guided art tour by their in-house resident expert - the hotel is found on top of the Zeitz Museum Of Contemporary Art Africa, which is home to a stunning collection of art from across South Africa and the continent.

The One & Only

The Cape Town edition of the luxury chain has more of a resort feel (some rooms are accessible via a bridge over the canal where a resident otter lives), which is a great choice for travellers who like to add an element of R&R to their city escape. The rooms are minimalist, but with clear African influences on its design, such as printed curtains, beaded ornaments and natural wood decor.

Outside of the room, you can unwind in the spa, found on its own man-made island, where a pre or post-flight massage is definitely encouraged or visit the resort's wine studio for a private wine tasting session by their own expert sommelier sampling the best wine in the Cape Town region, accompanied by a delicious charcuterie board. For dining, the all-day food and drink site, Vista Bar, sits directly opposite Table Mountain for unparalleled views. The One & Only also boasts a Nobu restaurant, which until recently was the only posting of the famed Japanese eatery on the continent (Chef Nobu and Robert De Niro opened up their second African restaurant in Marrakech in spring 2023). The concierge can help arrange activities with excursions, including whale watching, hikes and even shark dives offered.

Restaurants in Cape Town

Cape Town has really put itself on the map for its dining options in recent years, with a huge variety of restaurants. From modern takes on South African cuisine to full gastronomic experiences, the city has something for everyone. As a pescatarian, there's a huge amount of non-meat options, too. Plus, Ubers are a super reliable, cheap and easy way to navigate the city and fit in as many eateries as possible.

New for 2023 is Salon , the sister restaurant of the world-renowned Pot Luck Club (and found just one floor below), which offers incredible multi-course tasting menus based on all the places across the world where chef Luke Dale-Roberts has worked. Salon's take on the Singapore Chilli, Malaysian Laksa and twist on the traditional South African Malva pudding to finish off our dinner are highlights.

Another must-visit restaurant for a full multi-course and wine-paired culinary experience is the exclusive Salsify at the Roundhouse (recently named Africa's best landmark restaurant by the World Culinary Awards), whose setting overlooks Camps Bay in one direction (which is worth a visit in itself. Head to the beach just before sunset for stunning views of the ocean in this quaint surfer setting) and Lion's Head in the other. Salsify offers a lengthy ten-course chef's menu (we loved the line fish), where for every course one of the kitchen's chefs will bring it to your table and talk you through the dish.

For a lunch or dinner option in one of the cooler parts of the city, try the new spot Club Kloof . The Italian-inspired menu specialises in small plates with Mediterranean influence. We recommend the Mac and Cheese Arancino and Mozarella-Stuffed Pizza Fritta paired with an Aperol Spritz, of course. The brightly-tiled interiors make for a dreamy dining setting, too.

Speaking of interiors, Upper Union is another eatery where the food is elevated by the stylised decor of the building. In the heart of Cape Town’s Kloof Street district, it is an interiors lover's dream thanks to the emerald, black and gold modern twist on the traditional Victorian heritage building. At Upper Union, you can opt for the chef's menu of a big main meal with sides (headed up by chef Amori Burger) or a sharing-style menu. Whichever you choose, pair it with a cocktail from the mixologist's menu of bespoke drinks.

Day trips from Cape Town

There is so much to see and visit in Cape Town. So much so that you probably won't get to do it all. But here are some of the essentials that you should try to tick off if possible.

You will see Table Mountain wherever you go and should definitely try and get up there to view the Mother City from the best view possible. There are cable cars which go to and from Table Mountain and we recommend downloading the app to double check the cable cars are running as they don't if there is poor visibility or difficult weather conditions. If you'd prefer to hike, there are a variety of routes to take, differing in length and ability.

A hugely important trip from Cape Town is to Robben Island, where a ticket includes the ferry over to the island where former president and anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years, along with countless other citizens who were held as political prisoners for their fight against the apartheid. The tour guides on Robben Island are former inmates, making the visit profoundly impactful as they present the squalid conditions where they were forced to sleep, eat and work, often with very limited outside visitation while being held under strict rules and regulations, including being forbidden from speaking to to other inmates. As well as seeing Mandela's cell, you are also shown the areas where he wrote (and hid around the prison) manuscripts for his memoir, Long Walk To Freedom.

Another day trip about an hour's drive away from the CBD (central business district) centre is the Cape of Good Hope, the most south-western point of the African continent. It's also where the Indian Ocean meets the Atlantic Ocean so be prepared for breathtaking scenery of lush green mountains and crashing waves on the pebbled beaches.

Have a pit stop at Kalk Bay en route to the Cape of Good Hope, for kitsch coffee shops and souvenir spots, as well as sampling the fish and chips on the waterfront before taking a stroll to where seals will be found happily sunbathing.

Another must-visit is Boulders Beach , home to the famous colony of African penguins. Adorable.

Vineyards near Cape Town

There's the option to spend day trips visiting some of the many vineyards in the nearby wine region (some are as close as 30 minutes away) or you can extend your stay with a night or two there. In which case, you will likely end up in the beautiful town of Stellenbosch.

We opted to spend a night at the majestic Lanzerac Estate, a five-star country hotel with traditional décor full of beautiful quirky china antiques. Surrounded by mountains with a grand tree-lined driveway, the estate is home to rows of lush vines. We recommend heading to the deli for a wine tasting session. Try a glass of the rosé pinotage, a cross between the Pinot Noir and Hermitage grape, which originated at Stellenbosch University.

For a gorgeous dining experience in Stellenbosch where, of course, the wine is just as good too (there are 130 bottles on offer), we recommend the appropriately named The Wine Glass restaurant.

Safari near Cape Town

Of course, safari is a must when heading to South Africa. While the more widely known Kruger National Park is located further north nearer Johannesburg and Pretoria, it's incorrect to assume there aren't beautiful safari options nearer Cape Town, too.

Gondwana game reserve is a four and a half hour drive away from Cape Town. It's an easy drive, essentially one straight long road once out of Cape Town (stop off at Tredici bakery in Swellendam en route).

Gondwana is home to the big five: lion, elephant, rhino, hippo and buffalo, as well as herds of zebra, impala, cheetah, giraffe, monkeys and more. Guests are usually taken out for a morning and late afternoon safari. Thanks to the incredibly knowledgeable and passionate safari guides, highlights range from seeing a baby rhino crossing the path with his mother, a herd of giraffes having their morning breakfast and a post-hunt pride of lions chomping on their prey.

Though it is centrally about the wildlife and ensuing unforgettable experiences you make, the experience of Gondwana is heightened by the luxury accommodation. There are a range of options for your stay, from Ulubisi House, the staffed three-bedroom private lodge with a private pool, to the Kwena Lodge suites with a shared pool, sky lights for stargazing, and a range of indoor and outdoor restaurants offering incredible food.

Well, what are you waiting for?
