Journey to celebrate 50th anniversary with 30 shows in 2024: See where they're headed

journey the band concert

Journey is continuing the celebration of its five-decade career with a run of 2024 shows.

The 50 th Anniversary Freedom Tour kicks off Feb. 9 in Biloxi, Mississippi and will play 30 dates in North America through April 29 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. local time on Sept. 29 via ticketmaster.com.

Toto, which supported Journey on their tour earlier this year to celebrate their "Freedom" album, will again join Journey founder, guitarist Neal Scho n, keyboardist Jonathan Cain, lead singer Arnel Pineda, keyboardist Jason Derlatka, drummer Deen Castronovo and bassist Todd Jensen as show openers.

Journey's tour finds the Rock & Roll Hall of Famers tearing through a set list of anthems including "Any Way You Want It," "Faithfully," "Be Good to Yourself" and, of course, "Don't Stop Believin'."

When "Freedom" arrived in July 2022, Schon told USA Today that the album title was originally tapped for the band's 1986 release, "Raised on Radio," but then-singer Steve Perry didn't like it, "so we sat on it for many years … when we were tossing around album titles said, why not just call the whole thing 'Freedom?' It's for the times right now."

Schon was also sanguine when reflecting on the band’s legacy.

"It’s quite an accomplishment and I’m very proud of what we’ve done and how we’ve gotten through emotional and personnel changes and survived," he said. "It’s pretty mind-boggling but also a lot of hard work."

Hugely successful stadium rock outfit, Journey have sold millions of records, after rising to prominence in the 70s and 80s, perhaps best known for their hit single, "Don't Stop Believing."

Journey began life in San Francisco, US, having formed in 1973, spending several years developing their sound and lineup over their early albums. Their initial offerings were moderately successful jazz-rock records, that frequently broke out into instrumental experimentations. The influence of musical prodigy and former Santana guitarist, Neal Schon, was certainly on display, backed by Ross Valory (bass), Aynsley Dunbar (drums) and George Tickner (guitar), although George left after one album. Former Santana member, Gregg Rolie (keyboards, vocals) joined shortly after.

Not finding mainstream success, Journey decided they needed to find a strong vocalist, employing Steve Perry for the role. His presence immediately had an effect, with 1978's "Infinity" selling a million records in just one year. "Evolution" and "Departure" continued this success yet it was with "Escape" that they had created a real hit, featuring three Top Ten singles, "Who's Crying Now," "Don't Stop Believing" and "Open Arms." Journey sold millions of copies of "Escape," topping the charts internationally. 1983's "Frontiers" also spawned a number of hits, with Perry then embarked upon a solo venture, achieving double-platinum sales with 1984's "Street Talk."

Perry returned to Journey for 1986's "Raised on Radio," however the band disbanded shortly after. Perry continued his solo recordings whilst Schon and Cain formed Bad English and created the hit single, "When I See You Smile." In 1996, the band reunited, releasing the widely successful "Trial By Fire," bolstered by the success of the single, "When You Love a Woman." Tours followed, although minus Perry, maintaining the band's popularity.

In 2005, Journey's success was recognized, after receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which was followed by the band embarking on a celebratory 30th anniversary tour. Struggling to find a vocalist who could front Journey, they trialled Jeff Scott Soto before finding Arnel Pineda, a Filipino vocalist who they had discovered on Youtube. He made his debut with the band on 2008's "Revelation," which proved Journey still had songwriting abilities, with the album going Platinum. In 2011, they celebrated their prog-rock roots, blending their early sounds with the arena rock style they had developed into at their peak for the album, "Eclipse" in 2011.

Live reviews

I attended the Journey concert at the Minnesota State Fair on Labor Day 2014. It was supposed to rain that night, but the weather gods must also be Journey fans as it was a perfect evening for a concert. It is funny that a group with members in their 60s and the youngest member being Arnel Pineda at 46 had far more energy than the warm-up band with most members being in their 20s or 30s. I have been a Journey fan for a good 7 years now, and I discovered them by accident while browsing through records at a bookstore. As such, Journey to me means Steve Perry and the first time I saw them in concert last year was with Arnel Pineda and hearing him sing the songs that Perry largely wrote and performed was disorienting. I really enjoy the new album Eclipse, and it wasn’t hard for me to enjoy Pineda as these are his songs to sing and his voice is incredible. This year, I was more accustomed to Pineda and was determined to enjoy myself, and did I ever! The band has a great amount of energy and the crowd responded in kind, singing along to the songs and cheering like crazy. You’ll hear the classics for sure (Don’t Stop Believin’ was really special as the crowd really got loud when singing along to that) and that was really fun to hear, but there were some unexpected surprises as well. Firstly, it was nice to hear some of their new songs like "Ritual" from Eclipse and "Faith in the Heartland" from Generations, all the more so as the economy is not very good and many times the Midwest is considered flyover country by the coastal states. As good as Journey's classics are, I appreciated that they played their new songs too. Let's pray that "City of Hope" and "Tantra" will get stage time next year.

In an age where most “artists” can’t sing a lick without the aid of Autotune, every one of the band members can sing in addition to playing instruments. The drummer, Dean Castronovo (a newcomer to the band in 2001) sang the lead vocals for “Mother, Father” while playing drums at the same time. This song is very difficult as the key is very high and requires a great amount of power and range to express the powerful lyrics. He nailed it! I was not expecting the drummer to sing, but it was an unexpected surprise. Jonathan Cain is a very talented man, as he is not only a great piano player, but can play the guitar and provide vocals as well. He was very impressive singing “Anytime” and his piano portions in “Faithfully” were stunning as always. Ross Valory is the bass man, but can sing backing vocals as well.

Neil Schon is also amazing as his guitar work is legendary. From his “here comes the train” sequence in “Don’t Stop Belevin’” to his more intimate moments in “Who’s Crying Now” or “Open Arms”, he can also sing quite well and you are also treated to his rendition of the national anthem as well as a psychedelic guitar piece that has a bit of Indian sitar mixed in. It was really a trip, and shame on the people who were talking during these moments as they were great to listen to. Arnel Pineda is made for Journey. I must admit that I would love to hear Perry sing these songs, but that’s not going to happen and Pineda is the only other person I can think of that can fill Perry’s shoes. He has a tremendous amount of energy, range, and is very kind and humble and still looks amazed that he is leading a band like Journey. He was homeless for many years in his youth and spent a lifetime covering Journey songs and is now leading them. He appreciated how much the crowd got into the songs and promised to return to the Twin Cities. I’ll be there!

The Journey show is Syracuse NY on August 28 was absolutely fantastic. I had seen them earlier this year and there was some minor sound issues. Not this time. The band hit the stage and rocked the house for about 90 minutes. Their sound was as crisp as their recordings. Neil was incredible as any fan would expect. Dean is a monster on the drums, Jonathan is just so smooth, Ross was as his usual entertaining the crowd with his facial Expressions and Arnel has certainly found a comfort zone and without question is a focal point of the band. When anyone goes to a Journey concert there are high expectations and this concert started fast paced and continued through the night. The band truly rocked the house. They went as far back playing anytime and La Do Da to current release Ritual. The stadium was close to sold out. When 'Don't Stop Believing' started you could hardly hear the back due to the crowd signing along. That's what should happen at one of their shows. The band also expressed their appreciation of the fans. They did not take the crowd for granted. All of the bands members thanked the fans for coming out and Arnel specifically thanked the fans numerous times. The band is not only rocking today like they did 35 years ago, they truly show that they still enjoy it. If you don't have tickets to an up coming show or if you have already seen one of their shows, you should get tickets NOW. This was my second show this year and I would travel again to see them. There was nothing to criticize the band for. They just Came out and nailed it. Great job. Now quit reading reviews and go find where you can enjoy the experience

Not going to lie, I went to a Journey, Steve Miller Band, Tower of Power concert somewhat dreading to see Journey. Like the rest of this world and probably a few more, I have that love hate relationship with Journey's mega hit, sing alongs, and was not too excited to be going to see them. But, a couple of my friends were going and concerts at Shoreline tend to be a good time, so I went along with it. Needless to say, how pleaseanty surprised I was to find myself up dancing and belting the lyrics to songs I had never heard before (you can be sure that when Don't Stop and Anyway You Want It came on I was the loudest one there).

All this coming from the kid who thought it was going to be a real snoozefest. I would categorize this concert as a show to see for the fun and the experience over the music itself. Unless, in some bizarre turn of events, you are in fact a Journey fan, in which case buy your tickets now and throw on that tour t-shirt from the last time they came to town. The lead singer, a short Filipino fellow who apparently they found on tour in South East Asia, will have you wondering if he has been in the band all along with his streaming energy and spot on voice. All in all, a good show to go see with friends. Make sure to get there early and get a good spot to set up shop!

I can't think of anyone who won't have heard the classic hit 'Don't Stop Believin'', and I must say, this was the only track that I was familiar with before seeing Journey live. It wasn't a gig that I had planned on going to, but the experience was just phenomenal. The energy of their performance was just out of this world, especially considering they've been performing for the last 40 years! Each member of the band took a solo which was a really cool moment to give everyone the credit that they deserved, and it was great to be able to applaud each member individually. Even if you don't know the back catalogue of their music, the great 80s vibe is perfect for dancing alone, and the catchy hooks have you singing along before too long, which is what I found myself doing! The balance of the band and vocals complimented eachother well, with neither overpowering the other, making for a great sound in the massive venue, which had great acoustics. Great vocals, band, performance, and tracks. Such a fun night, I would definitely go again, and can say from experience that it really doesn't matter whether you know the music well or not to have a blast!

Arnel Pineda is an amazing addition to Journey. His stage presence is fantastic and he really knows how to interact with the audience. During the first few songs it seemed his voice was drowned out by the music, but the remainder of the concert you could hear him better. The rest of the band is equally talented in each of their respective areas as witnessed by their solo performances. The entire show was fantastic. The only draw back was drunk people in the audience. There was a handicapped women sitting next to us who was unable to stand and the people in front of us refused to sit after multiple times of asking them. A fight started between another audience member due to their lack of consideration. The staff quickly interceded, but didn't have the couple sit down. I think the show should be enjoyed by everyone who purchases a ticket and not by the few who think they are having a private concert just for them. After all, the ticket you purchase is for the seat. You should sit in it, especially if it is interfering with other people's view. Unfortunately this experience overshadowed the otherwise fantastic concert.

I thought nothing could be more exciting than sneaking through a basement window of a university auditorium to see one of the premiere classic rock bands of all-time. It hadn't been 30 seconds after we figured out where there were two open seats when Journey opened their set with "Anyway You Want It" to the roar of the 3,000+ fans in attendance. Guitarist Neal Schon sealed the deal for me with his precise, piercing riffs as the band rocked the crowd with intense energy that the crowd responded to all night. The synchronized lighting system that rhythmically danced with the music for almost every beat contributed to those on the main floor dancing, singing and waving their arms for the entire show while even spectators like us on the risers couldn't help but be out of our seats grooving all night long. Journey is one of those bands that has such polished musically talent that they make the experience of attending a live concert unforgettable. Taking into account the hundreds of concerts I've attended - for pay - this Journey concert will go down in the books as one of the top three...even if it would not have been for free.

Wow, what a tour-de-force of Rock & Roll power...

The Journey, Doobies and Dave Mason show was better than I'd hoped or expected...

I'm a music TV producer and have friends who have played in all of these bands over the years so have seen each group a number of times. I'm loving these super-group mash-ups of recent years and this one did not disappoint me.

I do want to commend the sound crew for the "Journey" set because it was one of the most expert and satisfying live mixes and exhibited real genius in the EQ, and overall artistic treatment.

In recent years I've noticed ( to my disappointment ) more events with inept live sound due to the apparent lack of talent or concern amongst our live-sound mixing communities. Nothing can ruin a great performance easier than a slacker at the board and I'm very happy to report, Journey's sound crew are at the top of their game...

I attended my very first Journey concert last night. Journey with Steve Perry was the very first rock band I truly was enamored with. Sure, the others soon followed, like Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Whitesnake, Guns 'n Roses, Bon Jovi, just to name a few, but none really truly rivaled Journey.

I've always stayed faithful to Journey. The lyrics resonate, the music simply thrills. I'll forever equate "The Voice" with Journey, but I don't mind saying Arnel.... DAMN, you rock! (Neal, glad to see you can still hold your own ;) )

In short, if you are, or have ever been a Journey fan, they will not disappoint.

Saw them in Calgary in 2012 and Arnel had a flu and wasn't even close to top form and the rest of the band had to give him breaks because he was so sick. This time everyone was at their best and it was truly a great show. Very few vocalists sound as good live as they do in a studio, Arnel Pineda is one of them. Neal Schon's solo project wasn't a bad opener, but it didn't exactly get the audience excited either. Overall it was a spectacular show though, I'd see them again without question because of it.

This band just doesn't quit!! Have been going to see them since the70's and they are still o e of the best shows going these days. My daughter is now a big fan. The show last night in Louisville was as good as ever. These guys work hard and it shows in the quality of the show.

Now it's even more fun to watch knowing they are in the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame!!!

If they come anywhere around do not miss the show!! I came to this KY show from FL....

Journey Announce Huge 2023 North American Tour With Toto

Journey and Toto had such a great time touring together in 2022, they're going to do it together again in 2023. The two legendary rock bands will share the stage on the continuation of Journey's 50th anniversary "Freedom Tour."

The new batch of dates start Feb. 4 in Allentown, Pa., keeping the bands on the road through the April 25 finale in Palm Springs, Calif. You can see all of the dates, cities and venues listed below. It should also be noted that a handful of shows are ones that have been rescheduled from earlier this year when the band had to postpone dates due to COVID-19.

Journey guitarist Neal Schon says, "We are all thankful and overwhelmed by the success of our Journey 'Freedom Tour 2022' this year and have added a new run of dates for 2023. We are looking forward to hitting the road again with our very good friends Toto! Come join us for a special evening full of fun and rockin' good memories. See you soon, friends."

Keyboardist Jonathan Cain adds, "Excited to perform for our fans as we tour next year with Toto. The combined hits of both bands represent a couple of decades of excellence that have become a soundtrack for people's lives. The music of Journey along with the music of Toto is an example of 'certain music' during 'uncertain times.'"

Meanwhile, Toto guitarist Steve Lukather chips in, "'On behalf of myself and the band, we are very honored and excited to do this tour with our old and dear friends Journey. Gonna be a great night of music, and as all the guys are lifelong friends... a blast off stage as well."

Tickets are expected to go on sale this Friday (Oct. 21) at 10AM local time. Stay tuned to each band's websites for additional ticketing info.

Over the past decade, the band has had a major renaissance in popularity like few bands at this point in their career. The audience is truly multi-generational, becoming younger with each passing year. Joining Steve Lukather and Joseph Williams are band members bassist John Pierce (Huey Lewis and The News), drummer Robert “Sput” Searight (Ghost-Note, Founding member Snarky Puppy, Snoop Dogg), keyboardist Dominique “Xavier” Taplin (Prince, Ghost-Note), multi-instrumentalist / vocalist Warren Ham (Ringo Starr) and keyboardist / background vocalist Steve Maggiora, This line-up marks the fifteenth incarnation of Toto in consideration of band members or side men who joined or exited. Individually and collectively, few have had a larger imprint on pop culture than the members of TOTO. The family tree can be heard on an astonishing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a half a billion albums. Amongst these recordings, NARAS applauded the performances with hundreds of Grammy nominations. With now 45+ years together and literally thousands of credits, including the biggest-selling album of all time: Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and accolades to their names, TOTO remains one of the top-selling touring and recording acts in the world. They are the benchmark by which many artists base their sound and production, and they continue to transcend the standards set by the entire music community, being simply synonymous with musical credibility. They are pop culture and are one of the few 70’s bands that have endured the changing trends and styles continuing to remain relevant.

ABOUT JOURNEY

Since the group’s formation in 1973,  JOURNEY  has earned 19 top 40 singles, 25 gold and platinum albums, and has sold over 100 million albums globally. Their  “Greatest Hits”  album is certified 15 times-platinum, making  JOURNEY  one of the few bands to ever have been diamond-certified, and their song  “Don’t Stop Believin'”  has been streamed over one billion times alone.

JOURNEY  was inducted into the  Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame  in 2017, and 2018’s co-headlining tour with  DEF LEPPARD  was the band’s most successful tour to date, landing them in the Top 10 year-end touring chart with more than 1 million tickets sold, and earning them the prestigious  Billboard “Legends Of Live”  touring award. March 2019 saw the release of  “Escape & Frontiers Live In Japan” , a live DVD/CD set from their concert at the Budokan in Tokyo featuring the band’s first-ever performances of the albums  “Escape”  and  “Frontiers”  in their entirety.  JOURNEY  has also received a star on the  Hollywood Walk Of Fame  and were inducted into the  Hollywood Bowl Hall Of Fame . Additionally, the band is the subject of the award-winning documentary  “Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey”  about the band’s resurgence upon adding  Arnel Pineda  as lead singer after  JOURNEY  Founder,  Neal Schon  discovered the Philippines native on  YouTube .

ABOUT DEF LEPPARD

With more than 110 million albums sold worldwide and two prestigious Diamond Awards in the U.S., 2019 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame® inductees Def Leppard – Joe Elliott (vocals), Phil Collen (guitar), Rick Savage (bass), Vivian Campbell (guitar) and Rick Allen (drums) — continue to be

one of the most important forces in rock music. Over the course of their career the band has produced a series of classic ground-breaking albums that set the bar for generations of music fans and artists alike. The group’s spectacular live shows and arsenal of hits have become synonymous with their name, leading Def Leppard to be heralded as the world’s greatest live rock band. Def Leppard’s influential career includes numerous hit singles and ground-breaking multi-platinum albums—including two of the best-selling albums of all time, Pyromania and Hysteria, capturing the group’s legendary tracks, bringing together classic Leppard hits such as “Rock of Ages”, Pour Some Sugar on Me” and “Foolin.” For the first time, in January 2018 Def Leppard debuted their full recording catalog worldwide via streaming and download platforms.

As they did with the original release of their records, Def Leppard dominated the worldwide charts again, which found their albums charting in the iTunes Top 10 in more than 30 countries, including Hysteria at #3 in the US, and #5 in the UK (36 years after the album had charted at No 1 in the Billboard charts). Def Leppard also had the #1, #2 and #3 records on the US catalog albums chart. The band have gone on to amass a staggering 5.5 billion streams since 2018, reaching a younger 18-44 demographic that now represents 58% of their fanbase. Additionally, the band have garnered an impressive 15 million followers across their social media platforms. In May 2022, Def Leppard released their twelfth studio album Diamond Star Halos. The album debuted at #1 on the Apple and Amazon Music charts. The album also scored a Top 10 debut on Billboard’s  Top 200 Albums  chart, marking the band’s eighth Top 10 album of their career, and garnered a #1 debut on Billboard’s  Hard Rock  chart. Diamond Star Halos had numerous Top 10 chart entries globally including a Top 5 debut in the UK. This has been followed by their 13 th  studio album “Drastic Symphonies” with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 2023. The album charted at no 4 in the UK album charts – their highest UK chart entry in over 32 years. Following the close of their historic 2018 co-headline stadium and arena run in North America, Def Leppard sold more than 1,000,000 tickets, a massive feat in today’s touring world. Def Leppard & Mötley Crüe topped that number yet again with another sold out North American stadium run in 2022 selling over 1.3 million tickets. As always, the group continues pushing the boundaries with their electrifying live shows.

ABOUT STEVE MILLER

Steve Miller (Guitar, Harmonica, Vocals) has been a monumental presence on the American music scene for more than half a century. At the start of his career, Miller became a mainstay of the San Francisco music scene that upended American culture in the late 1960s. Beginning in the 1970s, Miller crafted a brand of pure pop that was polished, exciting, and irresistible that dominated radio in a way few artists have ever managed. Miller’s Greatest Hits 1974-78 is among the 25 best-selling albums of all time. He was inducted into the Rock In Roll Hall of Fame in 2016 and in 2022 was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Whether he and his band, are riding the top of the charts or traveling the endless blue highways of American music, one can hear them playing and singing with conviction and precision, passion, and eloquence, and making music that looks to the future, respects the past and is thrillingly alive in the present, and more than able to stand the test of time.

Neal Schon

Before playing his piano ballad “Faithfully” on Journey ‘s opening 2023 date at an Oklahoma casino theatre on Friday (Jan. 27), Jonathan Cain told about 3,000 fans: “It’s good to be back. All together again.”

Trending on Billboard

The sextet’s three focal points — frontman Arnel Pineda , Schon and Cain — dominated the spotlight. Pineda, who replaced long-departed frontman Steve Perry in 2008 and sounds exactly like him, was in constant motion, running, jumping, waving, pointing and leading singalongs. Schon soloed constantly, opening the first song “Only the Young” with a burst of noise on his PRS NS-15 guitar and improvising with hard rock power chords in unexpected ways at the ends of rock radio fixtures “Wheel In the Sky” and “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’,” and Cain anchored “Feeling That Way” and “Who’s Crying Now” on his red piano.

Journey’s live formula is simple: play the beloved hits from the ’70s and ’80s, even if Schon and Cain are the only remaining band members from that era. They dispatched with their signature “Don’t Stop Believin’,” which has nearly 1.5 billion plays on Spotify alone, as the third song, then closed with na-na-na-ing, whoa-oh-whoaing and general earworm-rocking with “Wheel In the Sky,” “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” and the finale “Any Way You Want It.”

Schon and Cain consistently kept roughly 20 yards of distance between them, as Cain, mostly stationary in a dark suit coat, held down stage right with four different keyboards. Schon spoke sparingly, but Cain told the story of writing “Faithfully” on a lonely 1981 bus ride, concluding, “We pay a price for a life like this,” then encouraging the crowd to support the U.S. armed forces. The two cooperated musically, especially on “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’,” when Cain played boogie-woogie runs and Schon dropped in sympathetic guitar riffs to augment the piano. With the exception of Schon, who sang minimally, all six band members harmonized on vocals, nicely backing Pineda’s impossibly high range on “Anytime.”

With Schon and Cain in separate corners, and drummer Deen Castronovo, bassist Todd Jensen and second keyboardist Jason Derlatka holding down the middle, it was Pineda’s job to enliven the crowd, which he did, energetically and enthusiastically. He was the one member of Journey who seemed happy to be there, jumping on a pedestal and throwing his head back to hit those high notes, patting Schon on the back, fist-bumping Cain, signing autographs as songs were going on and, long after the others had walked off stage, sticking around for crowd selfies. Rock stars may “pay a price” for the rock-star life, but, Pineda suggested, it’s fun, too.

Journey to other planets, stay in Denver

Meow wolf’s convergence station invites visitors to interact with 80 installations of cosmic art..

Unusual creatures await in a swampy environment in one of four alien worlds artists created in Meow Wolf’s “Convergence Station” in Denver.

For those of us who’ve dreamed of visiting trippy planets out of a sci-fi movie, or stepping inside a crazily colorful video-game world, Meow Wolf Denver may be the closest we’re going to get.

The idea there is that we’re all interdimensional travelers to “Convergence Station,” where a rare cosmic event has melded four alien worlds into one city. What we’re actually visiting in a Denver neighborhood close to Empower Field at Mile High stadium is a four-floor indoor immersive art installation where hundreds of imaginations have run wild.

Giant plants and creatures, long-tendrilled jellyfish, a castle of colored glass, animated pizza slices, spinning clown heads, a massive sculpture of street signs and cast-off items — you’re never sure what’s around the next corner at Meow Wolf.

It’s an unconventional way for adventure-seekers to interact with and appreciate art, with thousands of details that all ages can explore in room after room of Instagrammable multimedia backgrounds.

The entrance area is like a train hub, with multiple ways to access what’s behind the walls of what Meow Wolf calls a “multiverse transit station.” Our first stop was a dim room with a fluorescent “forest” scene and cathedral-style “windows.” Colors changed in concert with ethereal music, while arcs of light danced along the floor in time with our footsteps.

By day, the Perplexiplex room at Meow Wolf’s “Convergence Station in Denver” plays a loop of surreal, nature-inspired scenes with a light show in concert with ethereal music. For special events, it’s a concert hall with lights timed to the songs.

This was the Perplexiplex, which plays a loop of surreal, interactive nature-inspired scenes and soundtrack for everyday visitors. For special events, this becomes a concert space, with lights and imagery timed to a band’s music.

The calm of the Perplexiplex on our visit contrasted with the buzzy energy once our elevator opened onto bustling, neon-filled “C Street,” an otherworldly downtown that manages to look futuristic and somewhat apocalyptic at the same time. There are brightly lit shops and cafes, graffitied alleys, even a throwback movie theater, with a few abandoned rocket-powered vehicles littering the streets. So many ideas competing for our attention.

We soon learned that if you see a door, open it. If you discover a tunnel, crawl through it. Yes, push that button or pick up the receiver of that pay phone. On C Street and beyond, there are dozens of unexpected staircases, secret rooms, and hidden nooks where you can linger for an hour or just walk through.

A pizza-slice character presides over a room that looks like a Chuck E. Cheese restaurant gone crazy at the Denver location of Meow Wolf.

My millennial daughter and her partner, who live in Denver, have each visited “Convergence Station” four times with adults of various ages, plus teens and younger children. All have been mesmerized and fascinated for hours. Meow Wolf is a true choose-your-own-adventure that can be a different visit for each member of your party — and even every time you go.

Or every time you see a Meow Wolf. What in 2008 began as a small artists’ collective in Santa Fe now has four unique, massive locations — in Santa Fe, Denver, Las Vegas, and Grapevine, Texas. (See accompanying story.) A new Meow Wolf is scheduled to open later this year in Houston.

The idea for Meow Wolf grew out of young, unorthodox artists feeling disenfranchised by the typical art market and gallery/museum world, so they came together to find a voice. The Meow Wolf name was chosen by combining two words picked out of hats.

When the group decided to push beyond traveling performance art and temporary installations, they found a shut-down Santa Fe bowling alley. That building’s nearly $3 million purchase and transformation in 2016 into “House of Eternal Return” became possible thanks to a pie-in-the-sky financing plea answered by George R.R. Martin, “Game of Thrones” author and Santa Fe resident. Meow Wolf’s imaginative experience quickly became a hit.

Lighting, music and sound effects like those used around this glass castle add to the immersive experience in Meow Wolf’s “Convergence Station” in Denver.

In Denver — which opened in 2021 at 90,000 square feet, triple the size of the Santa Fe location — the work of more than 300 artists (about half local) on nearly 80 separate art installations combined to create the converged alien worlds. Besides C Street, a labyrinthine area is the subterranean world of Ossuary. A frozen-looking civilization with a lot of glass, mirrors, towers and a playable organ is the Ice Cities of Eemia, with its Kaleidogothic Cathedral. Dr. Seuss-like landscapes, unusual creatures, and machines of giant proportions fill what Meow Wolf describes as the multidimensional, swampy Numina.

The artists worked in many media: painting, architecture, sculpture, collage, digital art, storytelling, music, film, and more. Enormously creative use of materials is everywhere, from fur or rubber on otherworldly animals, to vintage radio parts used to make miniature worlds, to the hundreds of books formed into towers and an archway in what’s supposed to be an ancient subterranean library.

Light and sound are integral parts of what’s happening, and you can often be a part of it. Pull the levers to play the cathedral’s organ. Spin the orb at the center of one nook to make the flowered glass walls change colors. Wave your arms to change the pulsing black-and-white shapes that fill the walls in one dark room. Use your fingers to paint visual and musical art on black screens in another.

The “C Street” area at the top of the four-floor Meow Wolf location in Denver feels like a futuristic downtown on another planet, with neon signs, shops, unusual creatures, and abandoned vehicles.

For those inclined to dig deeper, there is an overarching story line about an otherworldly civilization that uses memories as currency. You can unlock information on that and get more experiences by buying a separate QPass to swipe on machines throughout the installation. On our first trip, we decided the existing visuals and experiences were enough, but that game could be an entertaining add-on for all ages and repeat visitors.

Meow Wolf’s Convergence Station hosts special events and concerts, and has a sensory guide as part of its autism certification. The Denver location includes a gift shop; a weekend cocktail bar; and HelloFood Cafe, with a menu of hot items, grab-and-go sandwiches, coffee, beer, and wine.

Denver visitors can extend the Meow Wolf experience by heading to nearby Elitch Gardens Theme and Water Park. The Kaleidoscape dark ride was designed in 2019 by seven area artists. It’s described by Meow Wolf as “a thrill ride for the mind” that is “a voyage from minimal to maximal and back again,” offering riders “semi-quantum technology” to “help a tiny point of light in its journey to become a planet-sized hyper being.”

Okaaaaaay. We didn’t get to Kaleidoscape on our recent trip, so that description doesn’t provide much of a sense of what to expect. A social-media tagline for Omega Mart in Las Vegas said that it was better to experience Meow Wolf than try to explain it. Agreed.

Don’t Text, Mommy’s at the Rolling Stones

Portrait of Justin Curto

It’s summer — do you know where your children are? For once, avoiding that ghastly Ticketmaster queue. While Taylor is off on her Tortured Poets Department semester abroad and Ariana Grande is in the Galinda bubble , there’s an uncommon dearth of young stars on the American circuit through August. Left to fill the gap? Older artists, who are hitting the road to tour new albums, celebrate anniversaries, or just line their pockets (and sometimes all three). Yes, it’s a season of looking back, whether that means to the Summer of Love or to those years when you couldn’t leave the house without hearing an Usher hit. So which Gen-X, elder-millenial, or boomer-friendly summer tour is right for you?

The Golden Oldies

These old-timers still got the goods! Frozen-in-amber acts the Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band are playing marathon sets with a verve that’ll have you thinking they’re doping with Cialis, while Bob Dylan continues his never-ending tour, this time with Willie Nelson. Also, icons of the ’80s — whether that’s Janet Jackson’s dance pop or Metallica ’s thrash metal — firmly count as classic now. Dust off that leather jacket and embrace it.

Luis Miguel Through June 14

The Rolling Stones Through July 21

Janet Jackson Through July 30

Styx & Foreigner June 11–August 28

Willie Nelson & Family and Bob Dylan June 21–September 20

Doobie Brothers June 23–September 28

Def Leppard & Journey July 6–September 8

Sammy Hagar July 13–August 31

Metallica August 2–September 1

Deep Purple August 14–September 8

Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band August 15–September 15

The OG Lollapaloozers

Gen-Xers can have a grunge-girl summer with Pearl Jam, finally see Missy Elliott headline a tour, or lean into dadhood and catch Wilco for the 27th time. You even have two chances to see Sublime, depending on whether you want the real guys , who are playing with Bradley Nowell’s son, or you’re a big Rome fan for some reason.

Sublime June 8–September 29

Sublime With Rome Through Oct 4

Hootie & the Blowfish Through October 12

Pearl Jam August 12–September 29

Wilco June 12–July 5

New Kids on the Block June 14–August 25

SWV & Xscape June 27–August 18

Missy Elliott July 4–August 23

Limp Bizkit July 16–August 24

Creed July 17–December 5

Green Day July 29–September 28

Bikini Kill August 15–September 12

Incubus August 23–September 12

The ’90s Wannabes

Vampire Weekend doesn’t technically belong with the Gen-Xers. But they did leave the neo–dad rock of 2019’s Father of the Bride for ’90s New York City nostalgia on this year’s Only God Was Above Us, so consider them ’90s in spirit. Death comes for us all.

Vampire Weekend June 6–October 17

The Stars of TRL

From two-fifths of *NSYNC to five-fifths of P!nk (a.k.a. just P!nk), this season’s highest-profile pop shows are for the Y2k MTV-nostalgia crowd (c ondolences to the J.Lo fans ). Of the paltry few things millennial culture can take pride in, these performers’ live acts are among them — just ask anyone who saw Usher in Vegas.

Justin Timberlake Through December 20

Joey Fatone & AJ McLean Through August 30

Blink-182 June 20–October 11

Usher August 14–November 30

P!nk August 10–November 23

The Country Elders

Old country fans who love complaining about how the genre isn’t as good as it was back in their day will have ample opportunity to relive it. Alabama and George Strait are repping the best of the ’80s (alongside old soul Chris Stapleton), Tim McGraw and Clint Black are resurrecting their classic ’90s sound , and Kenny Chesney is delivering all those laid-back, turn-of-the-century hits. Even if, for some reason, you’re longing for 2010s bro-country, well, Luke Bryan’s on tour too.

Tim McGraw Through September 1

George Strait & Chris Stapleton Through July 20

Kenny Chesney Through August 25

Luke Bryan June 13–September 14

Alabama June 13–November 9

Clint Black June 13–November 9

The Cross-Generational Diplomats

What’s a band to do when they’re not a big enough draw to play amphitheaters on their own? Team up with another band that’s about 20 years older (or younger!). These acts are ambassadors, bringing together generations of indie-music nerds (Modest Mouse & Pixies), karaoke balladeers (Train & REO Speedwagon), or fans of groovy Bay Area rockers (Santana & Counting Crows).

Modest Mouse & Pixies Through June 30

Santana & Counting Crows June 14–September 2

Train & REO Speedwagon July 8–September 11

Young Music That Feels Old

Okay, here’s where we can build some bridges. This is the ‘take your tween daughter or younger cousin to one of these and earn Mom Cred, Dad Cred, or the much less vaunted Cousin Cred(?)’ material. Proving to older generations that what’s popular today isn’t that bad is a fool’s errand. Well, except for right now, while old-fashioned rootsy folk and country music is topping the charts. Parents will probably like the heart-baring Noah Kahan and the country rogue Zach Bryan as much as their zillennial kids .

Niall Horan Through August 3

Noah Kahan Through August 4

Tyler Childers Through August 24

Zach Bryan Through December 19

Hozier Through September 29

This summer is jam-packed with outdoor concert series. Don't miss a beat with our 2024 Green Bay-area guide to who's playing where

journey the band concert

Pro tip for the summer of 2024: Just keep that folding outdoor chair in the car.

If you’re a music lover, you’re going to need it.

The Green Bay-area calendar for the next three months is so packed with outdoor concert series you’ll be hard-pressed to find a day or night of the week when there isn’t a reason to grab your shades, the family or a couple of friends and soak up all that a whirlwind summer has to offer.

If a cold beverage just seems to taste better outside in the summer, something about music played outside sounds all the sweeter, too.

Here’s our annual guide to where to find this season’s musical opportunities to kick back or get up and move. The majority of them are free, but some require tickets, as noted. Remember that carry-in policies vary from event to event and weather can change things up last minute. While the focus here is primarily community music series, many bars and restaurants also offer patio performances throughout the season.

The Euphoria Brass Band may not be the hardest-working band in show business, at least not yet. But this rollicking group’s 11 performances between Wednesday and July 5 at the San Diego County Fair’s Chevrolet Paddock Stage certainly qualify as a testament to the tenacity and talent of these hometown favorites.

Everything you need to know about the 2024 San Diego County Fair

Gates open June 12: Here’s all the details on tickets, dates, how to get there, new attractions, what not to miss and a sneak peek at this year’s new fair food items

June 7, 2024

Euphoria, formed in 2011, salutes the propulsive, dance-happy traditions of New Orleans street marching bands. Salutes of another type dominate this year’s musical fare at the fair, where no fewer than 16 tribute acts are booked. They will play the music of everyone from Tina Turner, Elton John, Gloria Estefan and the Spice Girls to Elvis Presley, Whitney Houston, The Police and Guns N’ Roses.

But the biggest guns — star-wise — will be appearing as part of the fair’s Toyota Summer Concert Series on the Corona Grandstand Stage.

Here, in chronological order, is a look at four upcoming grandstand artists. Performances are at 7:30 p.m.

TLC: From left, Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas.

Speaking of tributes, expect some of the biggest applause of the night to come when TLC’s Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas pay homage to the late TLC rapper and co-founder Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes. With four Grammy wins and four chart-topping hits to its credit — including 1999’s “No Scrubs” and 1994’s “Waterfalls” and “Creep” — this veteran Atlanta R&B group has some crowd-pleasing favorites ready to throw down. June 14.

Singer-guitarist Cody Cannon of Whiskey Myers, Railbird Music Festival, June 3, 2023, Lexington, Ky.

Whiskey Myers

Depending on the song at hand, this 18-year-old Texas band can evoke the music of everyone from Lynyrd Skynrd and Led Zeppelin to Neil Young and the Rolling Stones, by way of Waylon Jennings and ZZ Top. The six-man group’s forte is Southern-rock. Its music — while not as distinctive as that of the artists who inspired it — is well-crafted and performed with a winning combination of fire and polish. June 19.

Smokey Robinson, at NYC Marriott Marquis on June 16, 2022

Smokey Robinson

This Motown music legend has been touring steadily since bouncing back from a 2021 bout with COVID that saw him hospitalized for nearly two weeks. Robinson spent more than a month regaining his singing voice before returning to the stage. Now, at 84, one of the greatest singer-songwriters of his generation is armed with a new album, last year’s “Gasms,” and has a Spanish-language in the works. But no matter how sound his latest material may be, Robinson knows his audiences want to hear his improbably rich catalog of songs. He is savvy enough to include nearly a dozen of them — among them “I Second That Emotion,” “Tracks of My Tears” and “Get Ready” — at each of his concerts. June 26.

Ludacris, iHeartRadio Music Awards, April 1, 2024, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

Usher, Missy Elliott, Justin Bieber and Black Eyed Peas’ alum Fergie won’t be performing with “The Fast and the Furious” film star and three-time Grammy Award-winner Christopher “Ludacris” Evans. But you can count on this veteran Dirty South rapper to drops verses from their hit songs on which he guested, including Elliott’s “One Minute Man,” Bieber’s “Baby” and Usher’s “Yeah!” Where his early releases were misogynistic enough to earn condemnation from President Obama and Oprah Winfrey, Luda — as many fans call him — is now a 46-year-old father of four. His recent credits include a Disney+ holiday comedy, “Dashing Through the Snow,” and an animated Netflix coming-of age musical comedy series, “Karma’s World.” And his rapid-fire raps can still excite his concert audiences. The Great Concert Ticket Bust

Big musical acts are canceling tours. Are Taylor Swift and Beyoncé the only artists who can sell out shows?

journey the band concert

It's probably really great to be Jennifer Lopez . Of my running mental list of people whose lives seem absolutely awesome, she easily falls within the top 10. But just because she lives a charmed life doesn't mean things go great all of the time, and, lately, things have been a little less than ideal for the actor/singer/dancer from the Bronx. Her relationship with Ben Affleck is said to be on the rocks, and beyond any personal woes, she's got professional pains, too. Namely, JLo is apparently having a hard time selling tickets.

Lopez announced a tour to support her new album ( and truly wild accompanying movie ), "This Is Me … Now," earlier this year, but she wound up canceling a bunch of dates amid weak sales. She then rebranded the tour as a greatest-hits show, but fans still weren't tripping over themselves to see her. At the end of May, JLo decided to cancel her tour , saying she was "heartsick" but needed to spend time with her family and friends.

In JLo's defense, she's not the only one having trouble packing venues. The rock duo The Black Keys scrapped a planned arena tour and are expected to announce a "revised" set of dates at smaller venues. On social media, fans have noted that some shows from the pop artists Troye Sivan and Charli XCX as well as the band Wallows appear to be undersold. The Latin trap artist Bad Bunny recently pulled out of a show in Minneapolis, reportedly amid weak sales. Coachella lagged this year, and there's been chatter about a variety of acts not hitting home runs sales-wise in some instances and locations, including Cardi B, Justin Timberlake, and Pink.

This doesn't mean the entire concert industry is in disarray. Taylor Swift is unstoppable . As is Beyoncé whenever she is on the road. Acts such as Luke Combs, Zach Bryan, and Olivia Rodrigo are selling a ton. Dead & Company, the successor band to the Grateful Dead, is adding dates at the Las Vegas Sphere. Live Nation, which owns Ticketmaster and rules the roost in the live-events space, had a huge 2023, estimating that 145 million fans attended more than 50,000 events, a 20% increase in fans over the year before. However, not everything is going smoothly for everyone. For some artists, conditions aren't so favorable, and they're struggling to pull in the crowds they anticipated, at least right out of the gate.

"Concert promotion is a betting business. You don't always win. And sometimes, you can be humbled," said Jarred Arfa, the head of global music at Independent Artist Group, whose client roster includes Billy Joel, 50 Cent, and Metallica.

Ticket prices are just astronomical right now.

There are a combination of factors that are dragging down some artists' ticket sales. For one thing, a lot of acts are on tour at the moment. In the wake of the pandemic, artists have been eager to get back out there and recoup lost time and money. Even if the return hasn't been smooth , basically anyone who can be touring is, meaning the space is crowded and oversaturated.

Related stories

"You'd never before had a moment in time where all the horses lined up at the starting gate and they all went out on the road at the same time," said Gary Witt, the CEO and co-owner of The Pabst Theater Group in Milwaukee.

The world really is your oyster right now when it comes to catching a show. But it also means that people have a ton of options, and there is only so much time to go around. Maybe you already saw your favorite artist when they first went on the road after the worst of COVID passed, and you don't feel especially inspired to go see them again. Or you like the band or singer in question plenty, but not enough to go through all the rigamarole of seeing them live. Either way, the once feverish demand for that ticket has probably cooled.

Pricing is also a factor. Anyone who's looked for concert tickets recently has probably been gobsmacked at the cost. Many consumers have been spending through inflation , even if begrudgingly so, but no one's budget is limitless, especially as prices for basically everything — including tickets to live events — remain elevated. Pollstar calculated that the average ticket price for the top 100 tours in the first quarter of this year was $123.25, an all-time. Its data indicates that the average ticket price for a Bad Bunny ticket is $290, for Justin Timberlake $216, and for Nicki Minaj $149.

"Ticket prices are just astronomical right now," said David "5-1" Norman, an industry veteran who has toured with Prince, Green Day, and Alicia Keys. "And if you're bringing a child with you, and then you have to stay overnight and gas and hotel and then food, that stuff adds up."

Just having the big song doesn't necessarily always translate into ticket sales.

Going on tour is always a gamble based on numerous factors including ticket history, streaming performance, email list sizes, and online attention. But there are no guarantees that any of that will translate to hard ticket sales . There are artists who might have massive numbers online but whose fans are only surface-level and don't really care enough to appear at a show. The way artists break out on social media nowadays makes it even harder to figure out whether that might be the case. Having a couple of hits on Spotify or TikTok doesn't mean someone can sell out a stadium.

That's why, in some cases, there seems to be a degree of overshooting. Artists (and their agents and managers and promoters) are trying to sell out bigger venues than they can. A more conservative approach would be to book a handful of big venues and see how it goes before committing to more, but that's not the approach everyone is taking.

"We have some hard-rock artists who you've never even heard of and they sell out everywhere, but they have that loyal fan base," Arfa said. "Just having the big song doesn't necessarily always translate into ticket sales." For every five or six acts that are doing great touring, one is a little clunky, he added. "We're having a couple conversations where we're thinking it may be best to push into Q1 of next year because of a high level of traffic on the road right now."

A spokesperson for Live Nation said in a statement that over 100 million tickets have been sold this year, even with fewer stadium shows touring, and that sales for shows in arenas, amphitheaters, theaters, and clubs are up "double digits" from last year. "Every year some events naturally fall off for various reasons, and in 2024 across all venue types we've seen a 4% cancellation rate – which is flat to last year," the spokesperson said.

Every artist and situation is unique. Bad Bunny may not have been able to sell such high-priced tickets in Minneapolis, but he's sold a ton of other places. JLo seems to have a lot more on her plate than trying to tour right now, and the Black Keys will probably do fine in smaller venues. A representative for Live Nation, which is producing the Troye Sivan/Charli XCX show, said the tour had sold out some dates and was 70% sold across the board, implying there had been misconceptions about sales online. (They said Wallows is selling "well" without providing on-the-record specifics and pointed to public statements from the Black Keys and Lopez, the tours of which Live Nation all produced.) Hiccups are not all about ticket sales, either. Kid Cudi canceled his tour this year because he broke his foot jumping off the stage during Coachella, and many acts aren't specifically saying the problem is sales when they do cancel.

There are strategies acts undertake to try to freshen things up for fans and boost sales, such as combining forces or bringing in special guests. Def Leppard is touring with Journey this year, and last year it toured with Mötley Crüe. There's always good old marketing. Live Nation recently wrapped its "concert week," which offers a variety of tickets at $25 — a good way to push tickets that aren't moving.

There is, of course, a huge issue that undergirds the entire conversation: Buying tickets is supremely annoying. You have to really want to see a show to try to navigate the labyrinthine purchase process. Live Nation-Ticketmaster dominates the market, which critics — including the Department of Justice, which is suing the company over claims of anti-competitive practices — say stifles innovation, allows for unfair markups, and contributes to an overall negative experience for fans . Fees on tickets are confoundingly high and seemingly endless . Bot armies snatch up tickets when they go on sale and flip them on the secondary markets for exorbitantly high prices. (One piece of silver lining here is that this year's lowered demand has resulted in lower resale ticket prices. SeatGeek says the average resale ticket price to attend a summer concert this year is $214; last year, it was $257, though a lot of that was due to Taylor Swift and Beyoncé.)

"The time when customer experiences aren't good is usually when there's a monopoly involved," Witt, from The Pabst Theater Group, said.

JLo, of course, will be fine — she is very rich, famous, and beautiful after all. Her fans will survive and will probably have a chance to see her perform again. But next time she hits the road, they'd be wise to scoop up her tickets fast so "This Is Me … Whenever In the Future" doesn't get axed, too.
