CRUISING , FLASHPACKING

Cinematic voyages: 20 unforgettable cruise ship movies.

Are you looking for inspiration to plan your first cruise ? Take a cinematic voyage with my pick of movies set on a cruise ship.

Not all of these cruise ship movies are masterpieces (although some are). A few are utter stinkers. However, each of them showcases aspects of life on the high seas.

Although I have indicated the availability of these films on Netflix and Amazon Prime there may be regional variations. Information here relates to the UK market in March 2024.

Classic Movies About Cruise Ships

Let’s start with the best movies about cruise ships, from films from Hollywood’s Golden Age to a science fiction classic.

Now, Voyager (1942)

Now, Voyager is not only one of the best movies set on a cruise ship but it is also one of my favourite films of all time. I blub like a baby each time I watch it.

Cowed by her domineering mother, middle-aged neurotic Boston heiress Charlotte Vale (a stupendous Bette Davis) takes a cruise after a restorative stay in a sanatorium. Whilst on board, she falls in love with the married Jerry (Paul Henreid).

The movie is famous for an iconic scene where Paul Henreid’s character lights two cigarettes and gives one to Bette Davis.

A masterpiece of a movie.

An Affair to Remember (1957)

This melodrama directed by Leo McCarey and starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr is considered to be one of the most romantic films of all time.

Playboy Nickie (Grant) and Terry (Kerr) fall in love on a transatlantic cruise to New York. Despite being engaged to other people, they agree to meet in six months at the top of the Empire State Building. But will all go to plan?

An Affair to Remember was introduced to a new generation of cinema-goers when it was featured in the 1993 movie Sleepless in Seattle .

  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score : 87%

Death on the Nile (1978)

Agatha Christie’s 1937 murder mystery has been adapted for the silver screen three times but the original film version is the best of the bunch (don’t go near Kenneth Branagh’s woeful 2022 remake).

Directed by John Guillermin, Death on the Nile was Peter Ustinov’s first appearance as Hercule Poirot and perhaps his best. Soon after Poirot boards a ship for a luxurious cruise down the Nile, a newlywed heiress is discovered murdered on board. Who is her murderer?

  • Running time: 2 hours 20 minutes

The Fifth Element (1997)

Welcome to a cruise ship of the future.

For my money, Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element is up there with the best science fiction movies of all time. Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis giving one of his finest performances) is a 23rd-century cab driver who is unwittingly pulled into a search for a mysterious fifth element that will prevent an apocalyptic event.

Much of the action in the final third of the movie takes place on Fhloston Paradise, a space cruise ship patronised by the rich and powerful. This superliner features twelve swimming pools with two VIP pools, dozens of high-end restaurants and a concert hall.

A glimpse of the future of cruising? Minus the giant fireball of course.

Disaster Movies Set on a Cruise Ship

The poseidon adventure (1972).

The 1970s was the decade for disaster movies featuring all-star ensemble casts and The Poseidon Adventure gets my vote as the best disaster film set on a cruise ship.

This multi-nominated movie – it went on to win two Oscars – centres on the ageing SS Poseidon on her final voyage from New York to Athens. After it is upended by a tsunami on New Year’s Day, it’s a race against time to bring the survivors to safety.

Spoiler alert; not many passengers make it.

  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 81%
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score : 76%

Titanic (1997)

The Oscar-winning, multi-nominated Titanic is one of the highest-grossing films of all time. Directed by James Cameron and starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, this epic movie about one of the most famous cruise ships in history is also one of the most expensive movies ever made.

The sinking of the Titanic is viewed through the lens of a fictional relationship across the social divide between Rose (Winslet), and Jack (DiCaprio).

  • Running time: 3 hours 15 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 87%
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score: 69%

A Night to Remember (1958)

Despite Titanic ’s many gongs, I far prefer this treatment of the sinking of the ill-fated cruise ship.

Filmed in a semi-documentary style, A Night to Remember sticks closely to the facts of the ship’s sinking, unimpeded by fictional sub-plots. This riveting film portrays the events of the fateful night of 15 th April 1912 from the perspective of the luxury liner’s second officer, Charles Lightoller (Kenneth More).

Movies to Make You Laugh

Monkey business (1931).

lobby card of monkey business one of the best cruise ship movies showing 3 of the marx brotheres

Monkey Business was the Marx Brothers’ third feature comedy and takes place on a cruise ship crossing the Atlantic to the USA.

Groucho, Harpo, Chico and Zeppo play four stowaways who are forced to work for a pair of feuding gangsters to evade capture by the ship’s crew. After the ship docks, the zany quartet become unlikely heroes when one of the gangsters kidnaps the other’s daughter.

Out to Se a (1997)

Out to Sea is not Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon’s finest cinematic outing by any stretch of the imagination but it is a harmless bit of escapist fun.

Hunting for lonely women with hefty bank balances, Charlie (Matthau) coaxes his widower brother-in-law Herb (Lemmon) into working with him as a dance host on an all-expenses-paid luxury cruise. Under the watchful eye of the cruise director (played by Brent Spiner from Star Trek ), Charlie pursues wealthy socialite Liz (Dyan Cannon) and Herb unexpectedly falls for Vivian (Gloria DeHaven).

The Parent Trap (1998)

This romantic comedy directed and co-written by Nancy Meyers stars Lindsay Lohan playing the role of identical twins who discover their relationship when they are sent to the same summer camp. The twins then set to work trying to reunite their parents.

While much of The Parent Trap takes place on land, there are some scenes set aboard Cunard’s now-retired Queen Elizabeth 2 (they were actually filmed on  Queen Mary , which is docked in Long Beach, California).

  • Running time : 2 hours 7 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 86%
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score: 70%

Like Father (2018)

In this predictable rom-com, jilted bride Rachel (Kristen Bell) ends up on her honeymoon Caribbean cruise with her estranged father Harry (Kelsey Grammer).

Like Father is set aboard Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas , so lovingly filmed that it feels like an infomercial at times.

  • Running time: 1 hour 43 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 46%
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score: 47%
  • Available for streaming on Netflix

Carry on Cruising (1962)

Carry on films are a guilty pleasure for me. Cinematic masterpieces they are not but they are silly fun from a more innocent time.

Carry on Cruising is very much in this mould.

Sid James plays Wellington Crowther, the captain of SS Happy Wanderer, who is forced to replace five absent crew members at short notice. Not only are these the most incompetent shipmates to set foot on deck, but the passengers are no picnic.

  • Running time: 1 hour 29 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: N/A
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score: 51%

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)

Shot in glorious Technicolor and featuring a razor-sharp screenplay, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is one of the best musical comedies set on the seven seas.

Showgirl Lorelei Lee (Marilyn Monroe) sets sail for Paris with her friend Dorothy Shaw (Jane Russell), where she plans to marry her wealthy beau, Gus Esmond Jr. However, her plan is placed in jeopardy by the watchful eye of a private detective hired by Mr Esmund Sr. and by Lorelei’s love of diamonds.

Royal Wedding (1951)

Do you fancy on-board entertainment Hollywood-style?

In the run-up to the wedding between the then Princess Elizabeth and Philip Mountbatten, an American brother-and-sister song-and-dance team Tom (Fred Astaire) and Ellen Bowen (Jane Powell) set sail for London. Then love intervenes for both siblings.

  • Running time: 1 hour 32 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 92%

Shall We Dance? (1937)

Was there ever a more perfect recipe than Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers performing to the sublime music and lyrics by George and Ira Gershwin?

Set on a transatlantic sailing from Paris to New York, Shall We Dance? features Astaire as Pete “Petrov” Peters, a Russian ballet dancer, and Rogers as Linda Keene, a musical-comedy star. As a publicity stunt to prolong Linda’s career, her agent leaks to the press that the two performers are married.

Will a fake marriage turn into the real thing?

This exhilarating musical features some of the greatest songs ever composed, including They Can’t Take That Away From Me and Let’s Call The Whole Thing Off.

  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score : 84%

Romance on the High Seas (1948)

Starring Doris Day in her film debut and choreographed by Busby Berkeley, Romance on the High Seas is a farce with romantic misunderstandings at its heart. Georgia Garret (Day) is a nightclub singer who is hired to assume the identity of a socialite, Elvira Kent, on a cruise to Rio de Janeiro to allow Kent to remain at home to spy on her suspected unfaithful husband,

Filming locations for Romance on the High Seas included Rio de Janeiro and Cartegena in Colombia.

Dramatic Movies

Ship of fools (1965).

This eclectic group of passengers on a cruise ship bound for pre-war Germany from Mexico represents a microcosm of 1930s society. Picking up eight Oscar nominations and directed by Stanley Kramer, Ship of Fools features a stellar ensemble cast including Vivien Leigh (in her final film role), Lee Marvin and George Segal.

Although the action takes place almost entirely on an ocean liner, the movie was filmed on a soundstage at Paramount Studios.

  • Running time : 2 hours 29 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 64%
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score : 77%

Table for Five (1983)

In this poignant melodrama, divorced father J.P. Tannen (Jon Voight) takes his three children on a Mediterranean cruise in an attempt to reconnect with them. However, he quickly realises that this is not that easy and is faced with an impossible decision when he learns of a tragedy back home.

Partly filmed on MS Vistafjord (built for the now defunct Norwegian American Line ), shooting locations for Table for Five included Rome , Genoa, Haifa in Israel , Athens and Cairo and Alexandria in Egypt.

  • Running time: 2 hours 2 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 67%
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score: 59%
  • Not currently for streaming on Netflix or Amazon Prime or to buy on DVD or Blu-Ray

Speed 2 Cruise Control  (1997)

Keanu Reeves was wise to decline the lead role in this lame sequel to Speed . In his place, Jason Patric teamed up with Sandra Bullock as they battled to get all of the passengers on a Caribbean cruise to safety when disaster strikes.

Seabourn Legend was rented for six weeks to film the movies and its multiple filming locations were used including those in the USA, the Caribbean and France.

  • Running time: 2 hours 5 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 4%

And the Award for the Worst Cruise Movie Ever Made Goes to …

Jack and jill (2011).

If you thought that Speed 2 Cruise Control  was bad, this is the cinematic turkey to beat all cinematic turkeys.

Improbably, Adam Sandler plays twins Jack and Jill who join their family on a cruise vacation. Jack and Jill is so unfunny and its plot so preposterous, that I don’t have the will to say any more about it.

This became the first film to sweep the board of the Razzies, winning in each category including Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Actor, Worst Actress, and Worst Screenplay. The cruise ship scenes were filmed aboard Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas .

  • Running time: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 3%
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score: 36%

And that’s a wrap.

Whether you are looking for inspiration to plan a cruise or simply looking for recommendations for a sofa and popcorn night at home, I hope that this cruise ship movies list hits the spot.

Watch, dream and book that cruise.

BEST Cruise ship movies list

Like father (2018).

What Cruise Ship is Like Father set on: Royal Caribbean Harmony of the Seas

Like Father is one of the newest additions to the cruise ship movie genre. Starring two of Wandermust Family favourite actors in Kristin Bell and Kelsey Grammar. This movie is set almost entirely on the Royal Caribbean Harmony of the Seas.

This cruise ship movie actually starts out on land where Kristen Bell is left at the alter who then proceeds to head out on her honeymoon cruise with her estranged father – played by the great Kelsey Grammar of Frasier fame.

Of all the movies filmed on cruise ships I think this one is my favourite as the ship really shines in this movie.

  • Jack and Jill

Jack And Jill - cruise ship movies list

Cruise Ship in Jack and Jill Movie: The Jack and Jill cruise ship is the Royal Caribbean Allure of the Seas!

I actually watched Jack and Jill on a cruise ship going round the Caribbean and I think watching it on a ship actually improved the experience

This Adam Sandler film where Adam Sandler plays both the lead roles of Jack and Jill, virtually estranged twins that go on a cruise together has been universally panned. And for its efforts won a record total of 10 Razzie Awards. For those that don’t know the Razzies are basically the polar opposite of the Oscars. They are handed out on the afternoon of Oscars night as a reward (if you can call it that) for the worst films of the year.

Despite all of these accolades (?) it is still a fun film to watch especially for fans of cruise ships who don’t take things too seriously.

Alvin and the chipmunks – Chipwrecked – one of the best kids movies set on cruise ships

Alvin and the chipmunks - one of the best kids movies set on cruise ships

Cruise Ship in Alvin and the Chipmunks Chipwrecked Movie is set on: Carnival Dream

This is one of the more family friendly cruise ship movies. Alvin and chipmunks sequel called Chipwrecked is the second sequel to the 2007 Chipmunks movie.

Whereas the first is set on land this film is set on the Carnival Dream cruise ship. In the movie the Chipmunks and Chipettes are heading to some music awards via cruise ship. As always with the chipmunk films they don’t listen to Dave and stay in the cabin and escape round the ship to cause mayhem which leads them to being shipwreck or as the film would tell you chipwrecked on an island awaiting rescue.

Parent trap

movies about cruise ships - the parent trap

This film from 1998 is actually a remake of the Hayley Mills classic from the 60s. When parents Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson split up they each decide to take one twin to raise each – what a great idea.

Years later siblings reconnect at summer camp and switch places until the parents are reunited onboard a cruise ship.

The ship isn’t specified however we know it was a Cunard ship that the finale was shot on.

Hotel Transylvania 3

My daughter is a huge fan of the Hotel Transylvania franchise which stars Adam Sandler, Andy Sandberg and Selena Gomez about vampires who run a hotel for monsters.

The third instalment in the franchise sees them joined by Kathryn Hahn, of  The Secret Life of Walter Mitty  and WandaVision   fame as the captain of a cruise ship for Monsters.

The ship sets sail to some great mythical locations such as the Lost Island of Atlantis and is a lot of fun for the whole family.

An affair to remember 1957

An Affair to Remember - one of the best cruise ship films/ romance cruise ship movies

This has to be one of the best romantic cruise ship films around dating from the romantic cruising age!

Although this film is more commonly associated with New York and the Empire State building as that is where the meeting at the end of the movie takes place, many people forget that the lovers meteor a cruise ship crossing to New York.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes 1953

This is another one of the classic films that features on this list. Gentleman prefers blondes stars the fabulous Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell as they cross the ocean on a luxury liner.

Monroe’s characters is newly engaged and is secretly being investigated by her soon to be father in law who suspects her of marrying for money.

There is a reason this film always features on the top 100 films of all time and as far as I am aware is the only film that makes it into these lists that features a cruise ship.

Royal Wedding 1951

A Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers classic set on board a ship. Expect big musical numbers, great dancing and fabulous costumes.

Shall We Dance? (1937)

The second film set on a cruise ship starring Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire that makes it into our list.

Death on the Nile – one of the best detective movies with cruise ships

Death on the Nile - one of the best detective movies with cruise ships

I am a huge Agatha Christie fan and my absolute favorite film based on her books is Death on the Nile.

It has a book that has warranted many adaptions including the recent 2020 version with Gal Godot and Kenneth Branagh. Personally I prefer the older versions but any of the films will delight any murder mystery fan.

Romance on the High Seas (1948)

This was Doris Day’s first ever movie and is set on a cruise that is headed to Rio.

Speed 2 cruise control – one of the best movies about cruise ships

cruise ship action movies

When I was growing up Speed was one of my favorite films. Starring Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves this film set on a bus  quickly became a modern classic.

The sequel, Speed 2 Cruise Control did not receive such rave reviews but it still a fun watch. Sandra Bullock returned for this sequel set on a cruise ship but Keanu did not.

I would say that this film is not one to be watched if you are taking your first cruise and are a bit anxious but will be a lot of fun for seasoned cruises. In my opinion this is one of the best action packed movies that take place on a cruise ship.

Assault on a Queen

Assault on a Queen is a heist film set on a cruise ship starring the great Frank Sinatra. The film was made in the 60s so is one of the older films on the list but it is still well worth a watch.

The Poseidon Adventure 2006

This 2006 remake is another that isn’t for those that are anxious about cruising but is a great action packed film. A New Years Eve Party goes awry when a rogue wave hits a cruise ship on a transatlantic crossing.

Everyone knows what happened to this famous ocean liner but may not be the best film to watch if you are a new or anxious cruiser.

Table for Five

This 1983 comedy starring Jon Voight is another cruise film about an estranged father. This time Voight is estranged from three children and takes them on a cruise around the Med in an effort to reconnect.

Out To Sea 1997

This Walter Mathieu and Jack Lemmon vehicle sees the two posing as dance instructors on a cruise ship.

The film was filmed on an actual Holland America sailing, on a ship that was then called the Westerdam (another ship holds this name currently).

Carry on Cruising

I must admit to not being a fan of the Carry on films despite being British and brought up on these films. I personally find the humour very outdated. However if you like the Carry On series you will love Carry on cruising which has all the classic hallmarks of a carry on movie with the added bonus of being set onboard a cruise ship.

This 2002 Cuba Gooding Junior film was a critical and commercial flop and winner of several Razzies. Cuba Gooding Junior accidentally ends up on a gay cruise.

Unless you are desperate for a cruise ship movie I would personally give this one a pass.

Monkey Business (1931)

An early Marx brother film where stowaways have to avoid staff and being caught on a transatlantic voyage.

TV Shows Set on Cruise Ships

I know this isn’t a film but Frasier is one of my all time favorite sitcoms and one of my favorite episodes is The Voyage of the Damned episode taps into many peoples worst fears about what a cruise is like. It is hilarious and is a much watch for cruise fans.

Miss cruising? Stream these 13 movies and shows to get your cruise ship fix

Gene Sloan

Are you a hardcore cruising fan? We wouldn't blame you for being a bit down. The complete shutdown of cruising since March due to the coronavirus pandemic is keeping you away from your favorite floating hideaways, and it doesn't look like you'll be back at sea anytime soon.

That said, you're not completely cut off from your favorite ships — you still can see them in movies and in television shows.

Since streaming movies and television programming is pretty much all we're doing these days (and we're guessing that's the case for you, too), we've put together this list of some our favorite onscreen entertainment that includes at least a glimpse of a cherished cruise vessel.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

In some cases, these movies and shows are available on streaming services such as Hulu (if you're not a subscriber, get a free trial ), Amazon Prime , fuboTV , Sling TV and FandangoNow . Others can be found on YouTube, iTunes, or at Redbox kiosks.

"Mighty Cruise Ships"

Available on: Hulu , YouTube , Amazon Prime , Smithsonian Channel

You'll get much more than a glimpse of your favorite cruise ship with this series. Each of the 18 episodes, which originally aired in 2014, 2017 and 2019 on Canada's Discovery Channel, focus on a single cruise vessel in fabulously minute detail, offering a behind-the-scenes look at how they run. Among the vessels featured in the series are Celebrity Solstice, Carnival Vista, Royal Caribbean 's Symphony of the Seas and MSC Divina. The series also includes ships operated by Viking, Star Clippers, Azamara and Ponant.

"Mighty Ships"

Available on: FandangoNow , Hulu , YouTube , Amazon Prime , iTunes, fuboTV , Smithsonian Channel

"Mighty Cruise Ships" was a spinoff of this series, which began airing in 2008 on Canada's Discovery Channel and has completed 10 seasons. While it generally focuses on commercial and military vessels, from the container ship Emma Maersk to the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, it also offers several wonderful episodes on cruise ships. Among the vessels profiled: Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas , Norwegian Breakaway, Wind Surf and MSC Meraviglia.

"Ocean Treks with Jeff Corwin"

Available on: ABC, Hulu , Ocean.com

Every episode of this 4-year-old travel series starring television personality Jeff Corwin will get you at least a peek at one the vessels under the Carnival Corp. umbrella of brands. The giant cruise company, which owns Carnival Cruise Line , Princess Cruises , Holland America and six other major lines, sponsors the series, which has been airing on Saturday mornings on ABC. It follows Corwin as he heads off ships in various port towns for a perfect day of adventure.

"The Voyager with Josh Garcia"

Available on: Hulu , Sling TV , fuboTV , Ocean.com

Image courtesy of The Voyager with Josh Garcia.

Like "Ocean Treks," this is a series sponsored by Carnival Corp. that's generously filled with cameos of the line's vessels and is all about things to do during port calls, but with less of a focus on adventure. The host, video journalist Josh Garcia, sets off from vessels for a day of off-the-beaten-path exploring. His goal: Meeting locals who can share their history, life stories and exotic foods. It originally aired on NBC from 2016 to 2019.

"Building the World's Most Luxurious Cruise Ship"

Available on: YouTube

This is can't-miss television for Regent Seven Seas Cruises fans. The two-part documentary chronicles the creation of the luxury line's Seven Seas Explorer, which was the most expensive luxury ship ever built at the time it debuted in 2016. Even today, only one ship -- Seven Seas Explorer's just-unveiled sister, Seven Seas Splendor -- rivals it in opulence. What we love about this documentary is the amazing behind-the-scenes access that Regent gave the filmmakers during the ship's construction. You see every little twist and turn in the making of a new icon of the seas.

"Jack and Jill"

Available on: FandangoNow , YouTube , Amazon Prime , Hulu , Google Play, iTunes, Vudu

Yes, we know: This is widely considered one of the all-time worst movies ever made. It only scored 3% on Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer! But, if you're a Royal Caribbean fan jonesing for a glimpse of one of the line's giant Oasis Class-vessels, there's simply no better movie. We won't even bother going into the inane plot of this 2011 comedy, which stars Adam Sandler (playing both a male and female role). Just fast-forward to the shipboard scenes, which were shot on board Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas.

"Speed 2: Cruise Control"

Available on: FandangoNow , YouTube , Amazon Prime , Google Play, iTunes, Vudu

This 1997 action flick starring Sandra Bullock got almost as bad reviews as Jack and Jill (which is a pity, as the original "Speed" is a classic). Still, we mention it because it was filmed on one of the great luxury ships of the past 30 years: The vessel now known as Star Legend. Star Legend sails for Windstar Cruises these days, but it originally debuted as the last new ship for legendary (and long-defunct) luxury operator Royal Viking Line. Back then, it was called Royal Viking Queen. By the time the film was made, it had moved to the Seabourn fleet, sailing as Seabourn Legend.

"Like Father"

Available on: Netflix

Another giant Royal Caribbean ship, Harmony of the Seas, is the star of this somewhat predictable "dramedy" from 2018, which stars Kelsey Grammer, Kristen Bell and Seth Rogen. The plot twist here is that Bell's character, left at the altar, ends up on her honeymoon cruise with her estranged father (Grammer), with resulting drama and hijinks. Royal Caribbean lovers can make it a game of spotting all the cool Harmony of the Seas features, from the ship's nine-deck-high zip line to the Rising Tide Bar. Scenes also were shot at Royal Caribbean's private beach retreat in Haiti.

"Cruising With Jane McDonald"

Former cruise ship entertainer Jane McDonald highlights a different river or ocean cruise every episode on this British television series, which ran from 2017 to this year (a new host will soon be taking over the show). Recent episodes have featured a wide range of vessels, including Oceania Cruises' Marina, Silversea's Silver Shadow and Princess' Sun Princess.

"Monster Ships"

Available on: FandangoNow , Hulu , YouTube, Amazon Prime , iTunes

Just in case "Mighty Ships" doesn't provide you with enough of a giant ship fix, the television world also offers the similarly named "Monster Ships" and, as its name suggests, the eight-part series from 2019 brings an up-close look at massive vessels of all kinds -- one per 42-minute episode. In addition to a gargantuan car carrier and a crazy-looking heavy lift vessel, the series (which aired on the Science Channel) includes two ships designed for cruising: Crown Princess and Royal Clipper.

"Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked"

Available on: FandangoNow , YouTube , Amazon Prime , iTunes, Google Play, Vudu, HBO Now

If you're even the least bit an "Alvin and the Chipmunks" fan, this is your cruise movie. The third installment of the live-action chipmunks series, which dates to 2011, is set on cruise giant Carnival's 3,646-passenger Carnival Dream. Or, at least, it is — until the chipmunks get blown away while flying a kite and end up on a deserted island. External shots and some interiors were filmed on the vessel. Some ship scenes, alas, were shot in a soundstage.

"Out to Sea"

Available on: FandangoNow , YouTube , Google Play, Vudu, Amazon Prime , HBO Now, Hulu

You can't go wrong with this Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau matchup, which involves the legendary comedic duo delivering their schtick as dance hosts on a cruise ship. Dating to 1997, it takes place on what's now the Marella Dream, a 1,132-passenger vessel in the fleet of British line Marella Cruises. Holland America fans will know this ship better as the old Westerdam (which was its name from 1988 to 2002). Just don't confuse it with the new Westerdam (Holland America likes to recycle names). It also sailed eight years for Costa Cruises.

"The Love Boat: Next Wave"

To make our list, a movie or television show had to feature a vessel still in service.

But we really can't do a story on cruise-related entertainment without at least mentioning "The Love Boat," which featured a Princess Cruises ship that's no longer in operation. While it doesn't offer a glimpse into a vessel you can book, this is, quite simply, the most iconic cruise ship show of all time. Indeed, many in the cruise industry credit the series, which ran from 1977 to 1987, for kicking off the great growth in cruising we've seen over the past four decades.

"The Love Boat" was set on the original Pacific Princess, which sailed for Princess from 1977 to 2002. But it was filmed not just on that ship, but also several others. If you want to see what all the fuss is about, you can find the show on MeTV stations on Sundays and on YouTube -- or buy the DVD box set of the first four seasons at Amazon.

Also, in 1988, the series was revived with a short-lived remake, "The Love Boat: Next Wave" — and it was filmed on the Sun Princess, which still sails. Unfortunately, it's not available on any major streaming platform. But, if you can find it, please sound off in the comments below and let us know where we can watch it, too.

The 10 Best Steven Spielberg Movies With Great Acting, Ranked

The 10 best mark wahlberg action movies, ranked, 10 alfred hitchcock movies that are perfect from start to finish.

Movies love to weaponize the world around us, often turning everyday items and vehicles into killing machines capable of massive destruction. Final Destination has built a franchise around freak accidents , while other movies' plots center around the impact and aftermath of these incidents. Whether its planes, trains, or automobiles, film and television characters are never safe from an elaborate disaster sequence.

RELATED: 15 Great Thriller Movies That Will Make You Afraid of the Ocean

While the best disaster movies often subject their cast to accidents on an outrageous scale, not every movie about cursed voyages offers large-scale disaster. When looking at movies set on boats in particular, some of the most harrowing and disastrous trips involve little actual destruction. It is the feeling of isolation, being alone at sea that is the real fear, as all manner of dangers can reveal themselves when no one else is around to stop them. The most popular maritime disaster movie—many would call it the gold standard—is of course, Titanic , but there's so much more to be discovered.

1 'Triangle of Sadness' (2022)

A recent critical success that has found itself nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, Triangle of Sadness is a dark comedy that takes a bite out of high society . Set aboard a luxury cruise ship, the film follows an ensemble cast of characters comprised of guests and crew, each dealing with their own problems in their own self-absorbed way.

Needless to say things quickly escalate, and after a storm hits the ship, alongside another threat, the spoiled rich folk find themselves needing to fend for themselves for the first time. Those who are easily nauseated by bodily fluids might want to skip this one as the movie's most memorable sequence involves a literal fountain of excrement .

2 'All Is Lost' (2013)

A survival story based on one man's determination while stranded at sea, All Is Lost stars Robert Redford as its unnamed protagonist. The film opens with the man's boat flooding with water after colliding with a shipping container, and from there it follows his desperate attempts to stay alive as the situation grows increasingly dire.

Being the only actor in the film, everything relies on Redford's shoulders, and thankfully the veteran delivers one of the best performances of his career in his twilight years. It is a performance that relies on physical acting as only 51 words are spoken throughout the film, and Redford manages to endear himself to us despite being a mostly silent protagonist.

3 'The Perfect Storm' (2000)

Released long before the age of infinite documentary shows that follow the lives of fishing crews, The Perfect Storm follows one such crew as they head out to bring in a much-needed haul during disastrous weather. It is not long before the shipmates find themselves in over their heads, as the very real risk of dying at sea presents itself.

Based on a creative non-fiction book of the same name, The Perfect Storm showcases the hazards that fishermen face as they try to make a living, asking if the potential spoils outweigh the constant danger. It is a basic story, but it is bolstered by a great cast that is led by George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg , and some impressive visual effects for the time.

4 'Project Wolf Hunting' (2022)

Pitched as Con Air on a boat, Project Wolf Hunting is set aboard a cargo ship that has been transformed to house prisoners as they are transported from the Philippines to South Korea. It does not take long for the prisoners to take control of the ship, but when a new threat emerges, the criminals and the police are soon forced to work together.

Another fine addition to the great horror scene in South Korea, Project Wolf Hunting is an extravaganza of gore. The halls of the ship are literally flooded with blood as guns and knives mutilate the cast, creating a must-watch for horror fans. The story also offers enough twists to keep viewers invested as the film's true villain shifts multiple times.

5 'Dead Calm' (1989)

A cult classic from Australia, Dead Calm follows married couple John ( Sam Neill ) and Rae Ingram ( Nicole Kidman ). After losing their son in an accident, the grieving parents vacation on their yacht to try and find some peace. They soon rescue Hughie ( Billy Zane ), a man stranded at sea who claims his ship sunk. Once aboard, however, Hughie reveals dark intentions as he brings harm to the couple.

Exploring the idea that sometimes the most dangerous things at sea are the people on board with you, Dead Calm is an effective thriller as it makes the most of its claustrophobic setting. All three leads deliver great performances, with Zane in particular proving effective as the sociopathic Hughie.

6 'Ghost Ship' (2002)

A classic of the early 2000s Blockbuster era, many children were first introduced to the horror genre after convincing their parents to rent Ghost Ship . The film follows a crew of salvagers as they board an abandoned cruise ship in search of treasure, instead only finding supernatural evil and a gruesome demise.

Despite some decent death scenes, Ghost Ship is a mostly forgettable haunted house movie at sea. Only the film's opening scene has kept it popular among genre fans, as its prologue involving the ship's guests being dismembered by a rogue wire cord is a notoriously gruesome moment that lives rent-free in gore hounds' heads.

7 'The Poseidon Adventure' (1972)

A classic of the disaster genre, The Poseidon Adventure follows the passengers of a cruise ship on New Year's Eve. When a rogue wave causes the large vessel to overturn and trap its occupants at the bottom, a small group of survivors attempts to reach the surface as they face all manner of dangers in the sinking ship.

One of the best examples of the disaster genre done right, The Poseidon Adventure works because of its exciting set-pieces, gradually growing tension, and a terrific ensemble cast. A remake simple dubbed Poseidon was released in 2006 and does a pretty good job of capturing the exhilarating spirit of the original.

8 'Deep Rising' (1998)

An underrated horror gem from the end of the 20th century, Deep Rising is set aboard a cruise ship after it is attacked by a strange underwater monster. When Captain Finnegan ( Treat Williams ) and his crew are hired to transport an armed squad of thieves to the ship, all they find are the remains of the dead passengers and the still-hungry creature.

Deep Rising copies classic action-horror films such as Aliens to create an enjoyable monster movie on the high seas. The creature in question is memorable as it is visually distinct from your average horror fare, and the film's entertaining script is bolstered by a cast of familiar faces including Famke Janssen and Djimon Hounsou .

9 'Triangle' (2009)

A mind-bending thriller that has remained popular in genre circles since release, Triangle follows Jess ( Melissa George ) as she joins her friends for a day trip on a yacht. After experiencing boat troubles, they climb aboard a nearby ship that is seemingly abandoned, except for the masked figure that is stalking them across its halls.

Triangle dips its toes into a few different genres across its duration, including horror, psychological thriller, and even science-fiction. To say anymore would ruin the surprises that it contains, but needless to say it features a well-crafted story that will have the viewer questioning everything they have seen as the characters try to escape this ghost ship.

10 'Jaws' (1975)

The movie that ruined the ocean for mankind, Jaws ' scares are still just as effective almost fifty years later. Set in the peaceful seaside town of Amity, the community is soon shattered by the arrival of a great white shark that puts the residents on the menu and shows no mercy to any who dare to enter the water.

The real movie begins when our three heroes: police chief Brody, grizzled fisherman Quint, and marine biologist Hooper set sail to destroy the shark once and for all. Once holding the title of the highest-grossing movie of all time , Jaws is iconic as the three strangers bond at sea, risking their lives to exterminate one of Earth's deadliest killing machines, with their only safety net being the small fishing boat that could sink at any moment.

7 Great Movies that Take Place on a Cruise

Picture of Sarah Bretz, Contributor

  • July 27, 2016

Most of us can probably say we love to watch a good movie now and then – especially ones that are centered on travel and adventure!  But did you know there are lots of films out there that are set fully or partially on our favorite method of transportation – cruise ships?  We’ve rounded up seven movies about cruising to watch…and this list is not extensive, so see what other ones you can find too!

1. Romance on the High Seas

This 1948 romance/comedy finds Doris Day’s character Georgia on a cruise instead of her friend Elvira – who backed out of her anniversary trip because she suspected her husband was cheating.  Little does Elvira know, her husband thinks she actually is on the cruise…and has hired a detective to spy on her.

DVD can be bought on Amazon by clicking here.

2. Jack and Jill

Adam Sandler plays twins Jack and Jill in this hilarious 2011 comedy (yes he plays both!) aboard  Allure of the Seas.   Jill comes to visit for the holiday’s, and together with their family they head out on a cruise vacation.  They get off on the wrong foot, and hilarity ensues.  Although this is considered one of the worst movies ever made, it still showcases a lot of  Allure ‘s awesome features – so you decide whether you want to sit through it.

Can be rented on Amazon Instant Video.

3. Out to Sea

Retired friends Charlie (Walter Matthau) and Herb (Jack Lemmon) pose as dance instructors on this much loved 1997 film.  Charlie convinces his recently widowed brother-in-law to come on the cruise, not telling him that he’ll need to dance.  Ship scenes were filmed aboard Holland America’s original  Westerdam  (now  Thomson Dream ).

4. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked

This 2011 movie is the third installment in the live-action chipmunks series, and this time the chipmunks, chipettes, and Dave go on a cruise aboard  Carnival Dream  for a musical awards show.  As usual, havoc erupts, and they find themselves on a deserted island.  This is a perfect movie for families to watch to get excited for an upcoming cruise.

5. Assault on a Queen

As you’ve probably guessed from the title, this 1966 film takes place on a Cunard ship –  Queen Mary  to be exact.  In it, Frank Sinatra (Mark) is a diver hired to search for sunken treasure.  He finds a U-boat, and their plan turns into a scheme to use the submarine to rob  Queen Mary.

6. Speed 2: Cruise Control

After saving a bus full of people in the first  Speed  movie, Annie (Sandra Bullock) is looking forward to a relaxing cruise with her boyfriend in this 1997 movie.  Their vacation becomes dangerous, though, when an explosion disables the ship’s communication and they realize someone else is controlling the vessel.  The film takes place aboard the luxury  Seabourn Legend  (now  Star Legend ).

7. The Parent Trap

While much of this 1998 movie takes place on land, there are some scenes set on a cruise ship, and I couldn’t help but include it.  Lindsay Lohan plays twins (yes, another twins movie where one person plays both!) that are working hard to reunite their parents, who haven’t seen each other in years.  While the ship scenes are set aboard  Queen Elizabeth 2,  they were actually filmed on  Queen Mary , which is docked in Long Beach, California.

10 Movies & TV Shows That Were Filmed on a Cruise Ship

cruise ship action movies

With passengers enthusiastically posting to Instagram Reels and TikTok, cruise ships play a cameo in thousands of vacation videos daily — but certain well-known vessels have also had starring roles in major movies and TV shows. With the cast and crew onboard for filming during actual cruises, everything from a cruise ship’s pools and cabins to its restaurants and bars provides a backdrop as the comedy, action, or reality-show drama unfolds. So, grab some popcorn and check out these 10 films and series to see some of your favorite ships.

1. Jack and Jill:  Allure of the Seas

With Adam Sandler recently awarded the Kennedy Center’s 2023 Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, perhaps his starring role — actually dual starring roles since he plays the twin siblings of the title — in the critically panned 2011 comedy Jack and Jill is worth a second look? Unless you’re a Sandler fan, maybe not. But this film, which features a double dose of lowbrow comedic shenanigans and also stars Katie Holmes and Al Pacino (plus a half-dozen Hollywood celebs in cameo roles), was partially shot aboard Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas . As the family boards for a holiday cruise, Jill excitedly declares, “This boat has everything!” Sorry, dear, but it’s a ship. Check out behind-the-scenes footage here .

2. Let Them All Talk : Queen Mary 2

Filmed almost entirely during a single transatlantic crossing of Cunard’s largest ship, Queen Mary 2, this 2020 movie for HBO Max, directed by Steven Soderberg, stars Oscar-winner Meryl Streep as a celebrated writer on a deadline who takes a cruise with her young nephew and two longtime friends (played by fellow Oscar-winner Dianne Wiest and Oscar nominee Candice Bergen) as she wrestles with an impending deadline. Long-standing grievances, misunderstandings, and lots of eating and drinking in some of QM2’s stellar spaces pace the plot of this character-driven drama. Watch the trailer here .

3. The Real Love Boat : Regal Princess

Princess Cruises has had a catchy affiliation with the “crew” and theme song of “The Love Boat” ever since episodes of the 1970s/1980s TV series were filmed on some of its ships. But in 2022, it sailed into the 21st century with the debut of The Real Love Boat , a reality series filmed aboard Regal Princess in the Mediterranean and starring husband-and-wife hosts Rebecca Romijn and Jerry O’Connell. The duo, along with the ship's actual captain, cruise director, and a bartender, endeavor to guide single contestants through a series of dates (both onboard and off) as they try to make a love connection. Watch season one  here .

4. Speed 2: Cruise Control : Seabourn Legend (now Star Legend)

Sandra Bullock is at the helm (sans Keanu Reeves) in this critically panned 1997 sequel to the 1994 blockbuster Speed . The plot of Speed 2 involves a maniacal computer whiz (Willem Dafoe) who hacks into the control system of Seabourn Legend (now sailing in the Windstar Cruises fleet as Star Legend ) and sets it on a collision course with an oil tanker. Bullock, reprising her breakout role as Annie, might be onboard for a relaxing Caribbean cruise with her cop boyfriend Alex, played by Jason Patric, but it quickly falls on them to save the day. Watch the trailer here .

5. The Parent Trap : Queen Mary (with exteriors of Queen Elizabeth 2)

This 1998 remake of the 1961 Disney original stars 11-year-old Lindsay Lohan as identical twins Annie and Hallie, who, after being raised separately since infancy, each by one of their biological parents (played by Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson), meet at summer camp and hatch a switcheroo plan to reunite them. The comedy opens with Cunard ship Queen Elizabeth 2 (now a floating hotel in Dubai) gliding through nighttime ocean waves as the parents celebrate their wedding, but the interiors were actually filmed on the historic Queen Mary docked in Long Beach, CA. Will the scheming twins — and another Cunard cruise — rekindle their parents' romance? Watch the opening scene here and the official trailer here .

6. The Bachelorette : Valiant Lady

The second Virgin Voyages ship, Valiant Lady , hosted the long-running ABC reality series The Bachelorette in early 2022 when co-bachelorettes Gabby Windey and Rachel Recchia sailed around Europe as they dated a roster of eligible bachelors in their quest to find the one. Both ended up with wonderful memories of the 2,700-passenger, adults-only ship as well as port calls in Le Havre, France (for Paris), Zeebrugge, Belgium, and Amsterdam, The Netherlands — but alas, neither ended up having their post-filming relationships and engagements survive in the real world. The full season can be watched on Hulu .

7. Out to Sea : Westerdam

What do you get when you cast Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau as widowed buddies who set sail onboard a cruise ship — Holland America Line’s former Westerdam, which is no longer in service, having been replaced by a new Westerdam in 2004 — as gentleman dance hosts in a bid to “sip champagne with some lonely rich broads?” (Matthau, it turns out, is a gambler deeply in debt.) Some hilarity does ensue, but the 1997 comedy, which also starred Dyan Cannon as Matthau’s younger love interest, played to mixed reviews. Watch the trailer here .

8. Alvin & the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked : Carnival Dream

“Alvin & the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked,” a 2011 live-action cartoon movie starring Jason Lee as Dave Seville with cartoon “munks” voiced by Justin Long, Jesse McCartney, and others, has the group of singing rodents embark on a family vacation aboard Carnival Dream as it cruises the Western Caribbean. Dave and the high-pitched and mischievous Alvin, Simon, and Theodore — along with the Chipettes — end up overboard and “chipwrecked” on a deserted island with a volcano that’s about to erupt, creating an exotic setting for them to constantly break into song. Watch the trailer here .

9. Like Father : Harmony of the Seas

Kristen Bell, Kelsey Grammer, and Seth Rogan star in Like Father , a 2018 film about an overworked bride left at the altar who ends up on her planned honeymoon cruise in the Caribbean anyway — with the father she hadn’t seen for more than 25 years. Filmed onboard Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas , the movie showcases cabins, public spaces, and activities (including the lead characters trying FlowRider), as well as island locales such as Ocho Rios, Jamaica . The film is on Netflix, and you can watch the trailer here .

10. The Love Boat : Sun Princess, Pacific Princess, and Island Princess

With its earworm of a theme song and memorable cast, The Love Boat was a hit when it aired for 10 seasons on CBS. And, even though the three ships that appeared in the series — Sun Princess, Pacific Princess, and Island Princess — haven’t been part of the Princess Cruises fleet for years, the cruise line maintains its nostalgic affiliation and has even sailed themed cruises with original cast members such as Jill Whelan, Fred Grandy, Ted Lange, Bernie Koppel, and Lauren Tewes onboard. The series can be watched on Paramount+ .

Spielberg civil war movie’s “extreme” set recalled by star: “you couldn’t have a paper coffee cup”, "a thinking man's rambo": stephen king gives new netflix movie a glowing review.

One of the things that made Tom Cruise such a bankable star is his versatility. He’s appeared in all kinds of movies across various genres. He’s given hilarious turns in comedies like Risky Business and Tropic Thunder , as well as engaging dramatic performances in classics like Rain Man and Born on the Fourth of July .

But arguably the genre that Cruise is most commonly associated with is action. From the aerial acrobatics of Top Gun to the increasingly daring stunts of the Mission: Impossible franchise, Cruise has starred in some awesome action movies over the years.

Updated on May 23rd, 2022 by Mark Birrell:   As per Variety ,  Tom Cruise recently stated at the Cannes Film Festival that he never intends to release his movies straight to streaming, meaning that  Top Gun: Maverick won't be available to stream for some time yet. However, there are plenty of the actor's other great action movies available right now.

Top Gun (1986)

Available to stream on netflix and paramount+.

Maverick’s debut in the first  Top Gun  movie solidified Tom Cruise’s place on the Hollywood A-list and his return to the role after over 35 years has shown that he's still at the top of it.

While its jingoistic message has gained the movie a reputation as thinly veiled propaganda,  Top Gun  is an action movie classic anchored by palpable bromance and dazzling aerial set-pieces courtesy of legendary director Tony Scott.

Mission: Impossible III (2006)

Available to stream on showtime.

A decade after the original movie wowed audiences, Cruise brought on the then-freshman film director–and now renowned reboot maestro–J.J. Abrams to helm the  Mission: Impossible franchise's third installment. Abrams then stayed on as a producer for the following sequels, with this entry sowing the seeds of what the   movies are today.

Though it may not contain a death-defying centerpiece like later  Mission: Impossible  sequels, the action never stops flowing in this threequel and Philip Seymour Hoffman's Owen Davian is one of the best villains in the  Mission: Impossible  franchise .

Oblivion (2013)

Available to stream on hbo max.

A stylish sci-fi action thriller in the vein of classics like  Logan's Run ,  Oblivion   was the first collaboration between Tom Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski, with whom Cruise would reunite for  Top Gun: Maverick .

Top Gun  fans will find plenty of aerial action in the movie, but it's really the slick and detailed designs of the post-apocalyptic world that Cruise's character inhabits that are the main selling point.

War of the Worlds (2005)

Though a far cry from an alien invasion blockbuster like Independence Day , Steven Spielberg's adaptation of H.G. Wells' seminal sci-fi story is bursting with huge action spectacle.

Despite his character not being an action hero by any means, Cruise plays perfectly into his star persona as a struggling divorced dad trying to protect his kids in the midst of a global attack by a technologically superior species. Cruise's character may be more of a spectator to the action rather than a participant in it but the grounded perspective makes scenes like the tripod's first appearance simply unforgettable.

The Last Samurai (2003)

Available to stream on netflix.

This period epic, whilst not without its romanticized depictions of its subject matter, is a highly-regarded entry in Tom Cruise's list of action movies. Set in Japan in the late 19th century, the film follows Cruise's haunted and bitter former soldier as he's placed in the middle of a samurai rebellion.

The Last Samurai was nominated for 4 Oscars, including Best Supporting Actor for Cruise's main co-star, Ken Watanabe. However, the whole cast gives noteworthy performances, with Cruise fully leaning into a violent samurai movie aesthetic.

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015)

Available to stream on fubotv and paramount+.

The fifth  Mission: Impossible  movie introduced a SPECTRE-like organization to rival the heroes' superheroic skills and a Blofeld-like mastermind to become the movie-series' first recurring villain, with writer and director Christopher McQuarrie going on to become the franchise's first recurring director also.

As  Rogue Nation   delivers its signature death-defying stunt in the opening scene, which features Cruise attached to the side of a real jet plane as it takes off, the movie is mostly a slightly more grounded affair than the other sequels in the franchise but nevertheless has nailbiting tension throughout and one of the best car chases of the 2010s .

Jack Reacher (2012)

Available to stream on amazon prime video and paramount+.

Before Christopher McQuarrie took over the Mission: Impossible franchise, he directed Cruise as the title character in Jack Reacher . Based on One Shot , the ninth book in Lee Child’s Reacher series, Jack Reacher follows its eponymous vigilante’s investigation into a former military sniper who shot a seemingly random group of people in broad daylight.

Even the negative reviews of Jack Reacher noted that Cruise gives an affable turn and that the action sequences, like the car chase, are wildly entertaining.

Knight And Day (2010)

Available to stream on amc+ and fubotv.

A blend of action thriller and romantic comedy, Knight and Day stars Cruise as a secret agent on a deadly mission and Cameron Diaz as a tourist who gets unwittingly swept up in his adventures.

The MacGuffin-driven plot can get a little confusing, but the movie is elevated by thrilling large-scale action scenes and spectacular chemistry between Cruise and Diaz.

Mission: Impossible (1996)

Available to stream on pluto tv and paramount+.

The sequels to Mission: Impossible have become all-out action extravaganzas. Like the Fast & Furious series, it’s an exercise in one-upmanship as each movie sets out to top the spectacle of the last. But the original 1996 film directed by Brian De Palma was a slick and semi-grounded spy thriller.

More in line with the tone of the original TV series, the first Mission: Impossible movie revolves around meticulously planned espionage operations. Ethan Hunt dangling from the ceiling of a high-security vault is one of the most iconic movie moments of all time.

American Made (2017)

Available to stream on fubotv.

It’s rare that a biopic falls into the category of action, but Doug Liman’s American Made has shootouts, police raids, and crash landings. It tells the outrageous life story of Barry Seal, a pilot who simultaneously worked for the CIA and Pablo Escobar.

Cruise gives a charming and hysterically funny turn as Seal, while Liman conceived, shot, and edited the movie in the fast-paced, rapid-cutting, style of Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas .

Edge Of Tomorrow (2014)

Available to rent on amazon prime video.

Much like the slasher movie  Happy Death Day , Doug Liman's earlier collaboration with Tom Cruise,  Edge of Tomorrow , incorporates another genre into the Groundhog Day “time loop” concept. Set in a future in which humanity is at war with alien invaders, Edge of Tomorrow sees Cruise’s soldier living the same day over and over again.

Based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s All You Need is Kill , Edge of Tomorrow is one of the most acclaimed sci-fi action thrillers of recent years though fans are still waiting for the sequel.

Collateral (2004)

Available to stream on hbo max.

Directed by Michael Mann, Collateral is a riveting LA-set noir film and a fascinating two-hander about the relationship between two diametrically opposed characters. Jamie Foxx plays an everyman taxi driver and Cruise plays a ruthless hitman who hires him to transport him to jobs across the city on one fateful night.

As usual, Mann brings sleek cinematic style to the proceedings and the tangible on-screen chemistry shared by Foxx and Cruise keeps their characters’ dynamic compelling.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)

Though the first three Mission: Impossible  films were successful, Brad Bird's  Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol  was somewhat of a revamp for the franchise. This time, IMF operative Ethan Hunt is forced to go off the grid in his pursuit of a nuclear extremist.

The movie’s central set-piece, in which Hunt hangs off the facade of the Burj Khalifa, became one of the all-time great IMAX movie moments, still packing a punch on the smallest of screens. It's filled with breathtaking action sequences, like a foot chase through a sandstorm and a heist in the Kremlin.

Minority Report (2002)

Available to rent on apple tv.

Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report is both a high-stakes crime thriller and a thought-provoking sci-fi epic. Set in a dystopian future in which the police can predict crimes before they take place, Tom Cruise’s top cop is accused of a murder he has yet to commit.

With its ambiguous morals and futuristic portrayal of law enforcement, Minority Report is a quintessential sci-fi noir in the same fascinating category as fellow Philip K. Dick adaptation Blade Runner .

Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)

Available to stream on paramount+.

Acclaimed as one of the greatest action movies ever made by critics, Mission: Impossible – Fallout is by far the most thrilling, action-packed entry in the franchise so far.

Cruise stepped it up by doing death-defying stunts in practically every scene of Fallout . He dangled from a helicopter, jumped out of a plane, and rode a motorcycle the wrong way around the Arc de Triomphe. The movie's commitment to largely-in-camera spectacle puts it in a class above most big-budget Hollywood action movies of the past decade.
