Should you do a boat tour in Zakynthos?

Absolutely! There are unique beaches to find and caves to discover, which are otherwise unreachable by land. You simply won’t be able to see some places without hopping on a boat and having an adventure.

I’d even go as far as to say that going on a boat tour is one of the best activities you can do in Zakynthos !

This article is all about the love of exploring by sea when you’re in Zante. Boat trips come in different shapes and sizes, and I’ve made sure to include some of the best ones in this post.

Best Zakynthos boat tours at a glance

Though there are a lot of different boat tours to choose from, in my opinion choosing from one of the private boat charters is the best way to truly appreciate the beauty of Zakynthos.

That’s because you’re in a small boat – and not completely crammed in with hundreds of other people (not fun) – plus you have more flexibility on the itinerary.

Porto Vromi: Cruise to Navagio, Turtle island & Keri Caves : This particular private cruise is a great example of how cool boat trips in Zante can be. It’s what I did with my group of friends and we loved it.

Leaving from Porto Vromi, this tour sees you exploring around the whole island, checking out Turtle Island, Keri Caves, and the famous Navagio Shipwreck Beach among other sights.

Along the way, you’ll also swing by hidden beaches and coves, which you can’t usually reach by land.

Zakynthos: Turtle Island and Caves Private Boat Trip :  This private boat trip has a focus on southern Zakynthos.

The main sights here are Turtle Island and Keri Caves, among others, but one of the coolest things is spotting loggerhead turtles that live in Laganas Bay.

You’ll have the use of snorkeling equipment to explore beneath the waves too!

From Porto Vromi: Shipwreck Beach Private Boat Cruise : This time around you’ll be heading to northern Zakynthos on this private boat trip .

That means checking out Shipwreck Beach and the Blue Caves, to name a couple of spots, after leaving Porto Vromi.

Different types of Zante boat tours

Not every boat trip Zakynthos has to offer is the same.

In fact, there are a whole lot of different boat tours that you can join in Zante – some of them may be more your thing, while others may not be what you’re looking for.

Generally speaking, they can be divided into the area of the island that they explore (with differing itineraries between the regions), and the types of boats that go out (i.e. private vs. big boat tours).

Itinerary-wise, they can be separated into the following:

Half-day tours to North Zante

These go to Shipwreck Beach , Blue Caves , and some beaches in the north of the island, which you can usually only reach by sea.

Shipwreck Beach is particularly cool – it’s here that you’ll be able to see the rusting hulk of MV Panagiotis, a ship that ran aground in 1980 while (allegedly!) smuggling goods to Greece on behalf of the Italian mafia.

Whether that’s true or not, who knows, but it’s a dramatic sight and you can get some cool shots of the shipwreck against the white cliffs and bright blue sea.

The Blue Caves are also beautiful. Situated near the village of Volimes, they’re named because of the turquoise water reflecting on the white arches, giving the rocks a cool, eerie blue glow.

Half-day tours to South Zante

Boat trips in South Zante head to Turtle Island, Keri Caves , and some lovely beaches in the area.

Turtle Island, known in Greek as Marathonisi (fennel island; named because fennel grew wild here), is located in Laganas Bay.

South Zante boat tours swing by here, stopping at the main sandy beach, and the cave-like shore on the opposite side.

Keri Caves are fun! Here among the various arches and sea caves the boat will stop at little beaches or shallow areas for you to swim and snorkel.

This is where I’d say a private tour is best, as you can be a bit more flexible with where you get to stop (or not).

Full-day full-island tours

These comprehensive tours take in the whole of Zante, visiting all of the above.

While they are good if you’re short on time, and just want to hit up all the hot spots in one day, it’s not so good if you suffer from seasickness.

If that’s you, and you really don’t want to be at sea all day (and you’re in Zante long enough) then you could do two half-day trips on two separate days.

The other difference that you can choose between is the type of boat. Namely, these are:

Small private boat

Obviously, this is the more expensive option, but there are definite perks to this kind of Zakynthos boat tour. For a start, there’s more flexibility, as I’ve said before.

You can choose where you stop when you stop, and for how long.

It’s also great if you’re with your family or a group of friends, as you can hang out together, catch up, and chill, rather than getting overwhelmed by a boatload of people.

Exploring the Blue Caves of Zakynthos in Greece during our boat tour

Small group tours

These aren’t private tours, as you don’t hire the whole boat out, but since it’s a small group tour, it’s a bit more intimate.

It’s a good idea for solo travellers since you’ll be able to get to know your fellow passengers as you tour around. I’d also say it’s decent for couples as it’s a fun way to get around away from all the “romantic getaway” stuff.

Big boat tours

These Zante boat trips are exactly what you imagine. One big boat, crammed with loads of people, and very chaotic.

If you’re here with a friend or two, this might be a fun option, and it’s definitely the most budget-friendly option, but it’s a lot to deal with. Not great if you don’t like crowds.

Best Zakynthos boat tours

Porto Vromi: Cruise to Navagio, Turtle island & Keri Caves

As I already said, this private Zante boat cruise around the whole island is great. It’s by far the best option for a group of friends who can afford to spend a bit more.

Basically, you get to see the whole island at your own pace, telling the captain where you want to go, skipping some stops if you don’t like them, and spending more time at the beaches you like. It’s perfect!

Zakynthos: Turtle Island and Caves Private Boat Trip

You and a maximum of 5 other people can embark on this private boat trip to southern Zakynthos . Being a tour of the south of the island, you’ll hit up Turtle Island and Keri Caves, among other places.

The captain is great on this tour – he’ll make sure to explain about the marine reserve, the turtles, and the other stops you make along the way.

From Porto Vromi: Shipwreck Beach Private Boat Cruise

If you want to see the north of the island, i.e. the famous Shipwreck Beach and the majestic Blue Caves, this Zakynthos boat trip is a nice option.

It includes snorkel equipment in the price, so when you stop by the amazing glimmering coves along the way you’ll be able to explore the underwater world as well as the scenery above.

Porto Vromi: Navagio Shipwreck Beach & Blue Caves by Boat

Head to northern Zakynthos on a bigger boat as part of a shared tour. Leaving Porto Vromi, you’ll head to Shipwreck Beach to check out the remains of the MV Panagiotis.

This tour then includes 3 swimming stops, and the beach options on this particular Zante boat tour include the hidden beach of Sfogio and the stunning Porto Steniti beach.

It’s a pretty similar itinerary to the north Zakynthos private boat tour, with the difference that it will be in one of the bigger 50-passenger boats.

Zakynthos: Marathonisi and Cameo Islands & Keri Caves Tour

This shared group tour is a pretty good option. You’ll get to go to Turtle Island and Keri Cave, among other classic locations. Besides the boat trip, this tour will also take you to do a tasting of local products like olive oil!

It’s done with a glass-bottomed boat, which some people like, as it gives you the opportunity to see the seabed, marine life and the famous caretta caretta turtles.

Personally I don’t love it, as the glass bottom tends to get quite dirty, and it’s common for these tours to harass the sea turtles by cruising directly above them.

Zakynthos Island: Navagio Shipwreck Beach & Blue Caves Tour

I also recommend checking out a combination tour like this one.

The good thing about this particular Zante boat trip is that that, as well as travelling by sea on a 3-hour boat tour, you’ll also do some land travel by minibus.

That means you’ll be able to see the Navagio Beach from the clifftop viewpoint.

This is particularly good for those who don’t have long in Zakynthos, as it’s a pretty comprehensive tour and you see quite a lot in one day. On the other hand, expect big groups, a certain amount of chaos and a tight schedule!

Private Customizable Zakynthos Tour

If you want everything to be completely up to you, then take note of this combination boat trip .

Options include visiting a Venetian castle, Shipwreck Beach, charming villages, and a whole lot of beaches, including the intriguing Xigia Sulfur Beaches.

It’s a private tour that’s totally customisable and includes both a minibus and a boat. It’s not exactly cheap, but if it’s for a special occasion and you share the cost between a group of you, it works out pretty reasonable.

What to pack for your Zante boat trips

You don’t really need much besides your usual beach essentials to go on a boat trip in Zante, but I listed below a few essentials anyway, just to make sure you don’t forget.

Power bank – you don’t want your phone to run out of battery while you’re taking photos of the beautiful turquoise water of Zante!

Waterproof phone pouch – Boats usually have dry area, but it’s always a good idea to put your phone in a waterproof pouch, so that you can have it on your for photos, without risking it getting wet!

Fast-drying towel – These towels are great for boat trips since they take up little space and dry quickly.

Stainless steel water bottle – save money and reduce plastic consumption by bringing your own water bottle and refilling it.

Sunscreen – You’ll be out on the water and under the sun all day, you don’t want to ruin your trip by getting sunburnt.

Where to stay for your boat trip Zakynthos

Where you stay in Zante won’t really have much of an influence on your boat trip, as there are boat trips setting off from all the major ports around the island. Plus, many boat tours include also hotel transfers.

If you want to avoid having to travel around the island before embarking on your boat trip, you can stay in one of the major port towns like Laganas, Zakynthos Town or Keri.

Here are some great places too tay in Zakynthos for every budget.

Budget: Gerovasis Apartments with Sea View – This is where we stayed in Keri for five nights. This apartment spacious, clean, has epic views and for the amount of people it sleeps, it’s fairly cheap.

Click here to book your stay at Gerovasis Apartments with Sea View!

Mid-range: Joya Luxury Villas – Even though there is Luxury in the name, this beautiful villa is actually pretty affordable, while still offering a luxury service. It sleeps up to 10 people, has a private pool, and is perfectly positioned to explore the North East coast of Zante. We stayed here for the weekend and loved it.

Luxury: Lesante Cape Resort & Villas – We had lunch here and fell in love with the venue. This 5-star hotel has beautiful little villas with private pools, amazing service, stunning views and is in a great position. Perfect to spoil yourself!

Do you need travel insurance to join the boat trips in Zante?

After my personal experience spending two nights in a private hospital in Tenerife, and having to pay for it out of pocket (it wasn’t cheap), I always recommend getting travel insurance .

You might not end up needing it, but for a small fee you can travel without worries. Personally, I suggest getting your Greece travel insurance with  Heymondo .

Heymondo offers tailor made travel insurance, providing the best value for money for your specific trip. You can also buy it once you’re already abroad and have forgotten about it before flying (which, if you’re anything like me, is quite likely).

Besides the usual cancellation, medical expenses, luggage coverage and general travel insurance services, Heymondo also has a 24/7 doctor chat and instant assistance through their app.

As a Greta’s Travels reader, you get 5% off your Heymondo travel insurance !

Final thoughts on the best Zakynthos boat trips

There you have it, the ultimate guide about boat trips in Zakynthos, Greece! Have you been on a Zante boat tour? How did you find it? Let me know in the comments below!

It might not be as iconic as Santorini with its caldera boat tours , but I still loved visiting Zante, and especially discovering the island by boat.

Zakynthos may be a small island, but it’s blessed with beautiful scenery, incredibly clear blue water, white sand beaches and dramatic limestone cliffs. Seeing this unique landscape from the sea is a truly unique experience.

It might sound cliché and touristy, but doing a boat trip in Zante really is one of the best things to do on the island. Regardless of what type of boat or tour you choose!

Personally I loved doing a full-day full-island private tour, but I understand everyone has different priorities and budgets.

I hope you found my Zante boat trips guide useful, and that it will help you choose the perfect boat tour for your style! If you have any questions, just let me know in the comments below.

“ This was a great day out with our guide Theodore who was friendly and helpful, giving us lots of information about the area and answering all our questions… … The minibus tour was great but the highlight of the trip had to be the boat excursion to Navagio (shipwreck) beach where you get to spend an hour before being taken to the blue caves. I was amazed how far they took the boat into the caves, we were lucky that at one of the caves the water was not too choppy and we were able to take a quick swim here too… … After the boat trip there is a quick lunch stop at a local taverna which was okay – my wife says her prawns were amazing. A quick stop at the oldest olive tree on the island and then back to be dropped if at our accommodation. A thoroughly good day and I felt it was great value. “ GetYourGuide Traveler from UK (Read More  Reviews ) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It was a great trip! We were picked up from our hotel and taken to the port, where our captain Stella welcomed us on the boat. We were fortunate to spot the first turtle 5 minutes into the cruise. After a few minutes of watching the turtle, we went for a ride around the coastline. We had a 20-minute stop for swimming. After, we headed to the turtle-shape island Marathonisi to see the caves and for another swimming stop (1h), this time at the beach. We still had a few minutes left on our way back, so Stella showed us Laganas beach. We were very lucky to spot another turtle! When the cruise was over, we were dropped off at our hotel. Our guide Stella told us a lot about islands and her skill behind the stere was very impressive! GetYourGuide PARTICIPANT (READ MORE REVIEWS )

This is a tour around Kefalonia. It contains lots of transportation, via ferry, bus and even more bus. It focuses on the sights, skipping swimming and beach-strolling. This must be understood. If you know this, you will have a wonderful time, like I did. I especially wanted to do it like this, as I have spent my other days on the beach and in the sea. No need to do it again here. For me the highlights were the visit to the monastery (I love beautiful churches) and Melissani lake (simply, it is magical), the rest was just bonus (do not miss the Kefalonian meat pie for lunch). Our Guide explained us history, culture and many more, without getting boring, did it in two languages, I enjoyed listening both explanations. GetYourGuide Tour Participant (READ MORE REVIEWS )

Here are some answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about the Zakynthos boat tours:

Things to do in Zakynthos Greece - family at the rocky beach

Zakynthos is a beautiful island located in the Ionian Sea, and it’s known for its crystal-clear waters, stunning beaches, and natural wonders. One of the most popular attractions in Zakynthos is Navagio Beach, also known as Shipwreck Beach, which is known for its picturesque landscape and the rusted remains of a shipwrecked freighter that has been stranded on the beach since 1980. Another must-see attraction is the Blue Caves, which are natural sea caves carved into the cliffs that line the island’s coastline. Visitors can take a boat tour to explore the caves and admire the stunning shades of blue and turquoise of the water. Cameo Island is another popular spot that’s worth a visit. This small and charming island is connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of sand, and it’s a perfect place to relax and soak up the sun. Finally, the island’s capital, Zakynthos town, is also a must-see. It has a rich history and is home to many beautiful buildings, including the Venetian Castle, the Solomos and Kalvos Museum, and the Saint Dionysios Church. The town also has a lively nightlife, with many bars and restaurants to enjoy.

Zakynthos offers a wide range of tours that allow visitors to explore the island’s stunning natural beauty and experience its rich culture and history. One of the most popular tours is the Glass Bottom Speed Boat Shipwreck Beach and Blue Caves & Viewpoint, which takes visitors on a thrilling boat ride to see the island’s famous shipwreck and the stunning Blue Caves. The tour also includes a stop at a viewpoint that offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the coastline. Another great tour option is the Full Day Small Group Tour to Navagio Beach, the Blue Caves & View Points. This tour takes visitors to some of the most beautiful and iconic spots on the island, including the famous Navagio Beach, the Blue Caves, and several stunning viewpoints. For those who prefer a more private experience, the Private Speed Boat Trip to Shipwreck Beach & Blue Caves is an excellent choice. This tour allows visitors to customize their itinerary and enjoy a personalized experience with a knowledgeable guide. The tour includes stops at both Shipwreck Beach and the Blue Caves, as well as other scenic spots along the coast. Overall, whether you prefer a group tour or a private excursion, there are plenty of options in Zakynthos that offer an unforgettable experience.

Zakynthos Greece, Navagio Beach, Shipwreck Beach, best boat tours in Zakynthos

The best way to see Navagio Beach, also known as Shipwreck Beach, is through a boat tour. There are both private and large group tours available, depending on your preference. A boat tour allows you to get up close to the iconic shipwreck and explore the crystal clear waters and stunning cliffs that surround the beach. Swimming at the beach is also an option if you prefer to get closer to the water. Another option to see Navagio Beach is to visit the viewpoint at the top of the cliff. This viewpoint offers a panoramic view of the beach and its surroundings, and it’s a great option for those who prefer to stay on land. The viewpoint can be accessed by car or on foot, and it’s a popular spot for taking photos. Ultimately, the best way to experience Navagio Beach depends on your personal preference. A boat tour is ideal for those who want to experience the beach up close and take a dip in the turquoise waters. On the other hand, swimming at the beach is a great option for those who want to fully immerse themselves in the beauty of the beach. Finally, the viewpoint is a great option for those who prefer to enjoy the beach from a distance and take in the breathtaking views of the coastline.

The peak tourist season in Zakynthos is from June to August when the weather is the hottest, and the island is crowded with tourists. During this time, the beaches and restaurants are bustling with activity, and there are plenty of events and festivals taking place. If you prefer a quieter experience, the shoulder seasons of May and September are a great time to visit. The weather is still warm and sunny, but the crowds are thinner, and the prices are more reasonable. The off-season from October to April is the quietest time on the island, and many businesses close down during this period. However, the island’s mild winter climate makes it a great destination for winter sun-seekers, and there are plenty of cultural events and festivals to enjoy during this time.

Best Boat Tours Zakynthos, Blue Caves photo from the cave towards the sun

The water around Navagio Beach, also known as Shipwreck Beach, often has an electric light blue color due to the numerous sulfurous caves around the beach. The sulfur that is present in these caves can radiate into the water when the sea level rises, creating a beautiful blue glow. This phenomenon is especially visible during the early morning and late afternoon hours when the light hits the water at a certain angle. Visitors to Navagio Beach can take advantage of this unique photo opportunity and capture stunning images of the blue glowing water, adding to the already impressive beauty of the beach.

Final Thoughts On Zakynthos Boat Tours

Whether you wish to spend a few hours on a glass bottom boat visiting the turtles of Marathonisi or a full-day tour of the best Zakynthos coastline has to offer, these are some great day trips on and around Zakynthos.

The best Zante boat trips – on the Greek island of Zakynthos

Are you a secret pirate or a nature loving mermaid? If you take one of the Zakynthos boat trips that are a favourite with visitors to the island, you’ll have the chance to play at being both. As my sister lives on Zante (as it’s more popularly known to the Brits) I’ve had the good fortune to take a holiday in Greece every year.

Zante Boat Trips to Navagio, Smuggler's cove, Zante Photo: Heatheronhertravels.com

We’ve done a few Zante boat trips throughout the years we’ve been visiting, and there are some variations. You’ll typically find a couple of choices depending on whether you want to explore the rocky north or the golden beaches to the south of the island.

Visit the Blue caves and Shipwreck beach on a Zante boat trip

If you’ve seen any photos of Zakynthos, chances you’ll have seen the one of Shipwreck cove or Navagio, taken from the cliffs above. This crescent of sand hosts a half-buried, rusty wreck and high cliffs on either side. It is one of the most photographed beaches in Greece.

To reach Navagio, which is on the north-west coast of the island, you’ll typically take one of the many trips from St Nicholas port. Or, depart from Makris Gialos, a small beach that is just before St Nicholas port. We started our boat trip in Zante at Makris Gialos.

Our smallish boat took up to 20 people, had a shaded awning and a powerful motor. The boat made good headway on relatively calm waters at first. We passed the sea caves, known locally as the ‘Blue Caves’. These caves have been cut limestone cliffs by the sea.

We didn’t stop but powered on around the northern tip of the island, at which point the sea started to become decidedly rough. Around 40 minutes after leaving the beach we were all feeling a bit seasick. We were relieved when the Shipwreck beach came into sight.

Smuggler’s boat or just a good story?

The metal hull of the ship on the sand is supposed to be a cigarette smuggler’s boat that went aground in the 1980’s. Perhaps that’s just a nice story to tell the tourists! In any case it adds some interest to a beautiful beach which is larger than it appears from above. This beach can only be reached by sea, due to the sheer limestone cliffs.

On the day we visited the swell was high. Although the captain skilfully moved the boat as close as he could, it wasn’t possible to get it right up on the beach. If we wanted to get ashore, we’d have to jump in and swim through the surf.

In we went, although I was knocked over by the force of the waves and ended up with sand in my bikini and water up my nose. We spent around 20 minutes on the beach and I took the opportunity to walk around the ship. Over time it has broken in half, making a shady area inside, with a hull that had rusted away into lacy holes.

We swam back to the boat and powered back the way we had come. The captain showed no mercy to those of us feeling sick as he opened the throttle and the boat banged up and down on the waves. Things improved once we rounded the headland and entered sheltered waters again, returning to explore the sea caves.

The captain nosed the boats into a few of the caves where the water below us was startlingly deep cobalt blue and turquoise. We anchored for a while and had a chance to swim and snorkel around the boat before returning to Makris Gialos.

This boat trip in Zakynthos takes around 2-3 hours. Check whether the sea is rough or calm as this will affect your experience. Bear in mind that even if it is calm at your resort, it may still be windy with rough seas in the north of the island.

Also consider the size of the boat, as a larger boat may be more stable but a smaller boat will be able to get you closer into the beach. For those that don’t want to brave the choppy seas to the shipwreck beach, you can still do a very pleasant boat trip in a glass bottom boat to the sea caves.

You’ll have plenty of opportunities for swimming, although this will make a shorter trip. Our boat trip cost around €20 per person and you may be able to negotiate a discount for larger groups.

Zante turtle boat trips in Laganas bay

If you want more gentle boat trip for your holiday in Greece, I’d suggest that you head for the southern end of the island. Look for one of the Zakynthos boat trips that take you through Laganas Bay and around to the Keri caves.

This end of the island is famed for the beautiful golden sandy beaches and the Loggerhead or Caretta Caretta turtles that nest on them. These Zante turtle boat trips are typically sold as an opportunity to see the loggerheads swimming in Laganas Bay. You should be aware that their numbers are dwindling. Plan to go with a reputable boat owner who will respect the laws of the National Marine Park and not harass the turtles.

Zante turtle boat trips Photo: Heatheronhertravels.com

We’ve taken these Laganas boat trips twice. Different styles of boats give slightly different experiences although we went to the same locations on both trips. The first occasion was a half-day trip on a catamaran. This boat had a cabin and plenty of space on deck at the back and front of the boat to spread out.

We left from the small beach at Porto Roma. The first hour was spent travelling along the coast with views of the limestone cliffs. Later we rounded the point and crossed Laganas Bay to swim in the Keri caves.

On the second occasion we went on a much smaller, glass bottomed boat from Agios Sostis close to Laganas. This meant that we had a shorter trip of around 2 hours, which was still plenty of time.

Laganas boat trips to see the Loggerhead turtles in Laganas bay Photo: Heatheronhertravels.com

Mind the strict rules about the turtles

Either on the way out or the way back the boat is likely to take you into Laganas Bay. This is the main place you can see turtles swimming in the water.

Beware of any boat owners who guarantee you’ll see the turtles. This makes it more likely that the few that are around will be chased and tracked down just to give you your sighting.

There are also strict rules about the contact with the turtles. For instance you’re not allowed to swim close to the turtles or to pull them out of the water. And, a limited number of boats are allowed near a turtle at any one time.

All this means that you’ll probably be able to see the turtles for around 10 minutes before the boat needs to move away. On our first turtle boat trip, we went with local naturalist Yannis Vardakastanis, who runs the Earth Sea and Sky volunteer and information programme. This time we didn’t actually see any turtles. On the second trip we did spot one and there were several boats close to it all homing in to take a look, so I felt a bit sorry for the turtle.

Visit Turtle Island in Laganas bay and swim in the Keri caves

The second part of the boat trip takes you to the far side of Laganas bay and under the high limestone cliffs at Keri. Here there are some sea arches and caves, although not as deep as the Blue Caves on the north-east coast. When the boat anchors, this is a lovely place to jump off into the clear water and swim or snorkel.

On the return trip, you are likely to stop at Marathonisi or Turtle island in Zante. This small island in the bay makes the shape of a turtle. It’s also one of the nesting beaches for the turtles. You are not allowed to land on the small sandy beach where the turtles nest, and even if you have your own boat you should not do so.

Marathonisi or Turtle island Zante Photo: Heatheronhertravels.com

On the opposite side of the island is another small beach and a sea cave where you are allowed to land. Here you can relax for a while and have a swim. There’s even a boat that comes around selling ice creams and drinks, just like an ice cream van.

Turtle spotting boat trip options

If you are interested in taking a Zante turtle spotting boat trip, there are many boats that offer it. Go either from Laganas resort, from the small marina at Agios Sostis or from the harbour at Keri. If you’re in one of the holiday resorts you’ll also come across plenty of people selling you this as a day trip with transport to and from the resort.

The shorter 2-3 hour trips typically cost €20-25 per person. You can also rent small boats for 6-8 people to take out yourself into the bay. This is fun if there’s a large group of you and you feel confident handling the boat.

The boat trips in Zante to see the blue caves, turtles or Shipwreck beach are well worth doing. And, there are plenty more things to see and do on the Greek island of Zakynthos. The boat trips are a lovely way to see the island and was certainly a highlight of our holiday.

Hello Heather, I've never been to Zakynthos. I'm looking to stay at a hotel close to a port where I could take advantage of daily boat trips. As a Zakynthos aficionado, what is the best port to stay close by for frequent boat trips to different beaches? (2-6 hour day excursions by boat, not ferries). We're planning to spend 5 nights.

Heather Cowper

@Rob There are a few main types of boat trips on Zakynthos - in the north of the island to see the blue caves and shipwreck beach, in the south of the island around Laganas bay for turtle spotting and to see the Keri caves for swimming, and longer variations such as around the whole island on a day trip. You can find lots of boat trips from Zante town, but I personally wouldn't stay there as you get a much more relaxed experience in one of the resort hotels with a swimming pool and close to the beach. I would hire and use that to visit different beaches as these are easy to access by car and the boat trips are more to see the sea caves and shipwreck. Then I'd take one or two boat trips in the north and south of the island depending on what interests you. These kinds of trips can be booked from numerous providers in every resort. If you want to be centrally located, my sister's hotels in Argassi (Windmill Hotel & Windmill Bay Hotel) are a good choice - you are a 15 min drive or bus ride from Zante town and can easily drive or get a bus to the other wonderful beaches at Vassilikos, Gerakas. Or you can drive to Laganas or to the north of the island to get a boat trip or organise it locally.

I'm heading for Zakynthos on Tuesday for a family holiday, and was last there 21 years ago on honeymoon. We stayed at Kalamaki last time and saw the turtles coming ashore to lay eggs, and this time we are staying round the east side at Tsilivi. Really looking forward to how the island will have changed. We had a few wild nights out in Laganas last time, I suspect it's far wilder now!

@Rob I suspect that you'll find the area around Kalamaki and Laganas a lot more built up and busy than when you were there last and I think the beaches where the turtles nest are closed at night to protect them. Hope you have a great holiday!

I wish one of my sisters lived in Greece!! Both boat trips sound amazing, but if I had to choose, it would have to be to see the turtles!

@Susan I agree, I love the turtle trip, even if you don't see any turtles, the water is beautiful

Hello Heather, long time no see.

I just thought I would mention that in my opinion, if you are touring Zakynthos by car or bike, the quickest, cheapest and most convenient way of seeing both the Blue Caves and Navagio Beach is to take the boats below the lighthouse at Cape Schinari, right in the middlwe of the caves, and the Shipwreck is just 12 minutes away. I was there with guests earlier this week and the fare to visit both attractions was just 15 Euros.

Two more advantages are that you get to see the most beautiful and rugged part of the island with picturesque old villages, wonderful vegetation and you can better evaluate sea conditions so that you avoid the rough ride that you referred to.

Best Regards Rob

@Rob Great to hear from you, I'll try and call in when I'm visiting my sis in August - thanks for that tip, I didn't realise that you could take a boat from that location, probably it's not much promoted as the boatmen don't make as much out of the trip. As you say you get the benefit of the caves and the beach without the long boat journey which isn't great if its rough

Hello Heather, long time no see. I just thought to mention that if you are touring the island by car or bike, the most convenient, cheapest and quickest location to see both the Blue Caves and Navagio is below the lighthouse at Cape Schinari, right at the north of the island, where glass-bottomed boats take you into the adjacent Caves, and it is only 12 minutes to the Shipwreck. The other advantage is that you can evaluate the sea conditions much better up there and avoid the rough ride that you had. There are also boats for the Shipwreck at Porto Vromi on the West Coast.

Zakynthos , also known as Zante , is the largest breeding ground for the Caretta Caretta turtle in the whole of the Mediterranean Sea. They have been here for millions of years and are often a Zante holiday highlight on the Zakynthos turtle tours . They are very beautiful creatures, but are highly endangered. We work alongside ARCHELON and sponsor the Sea Turtle Protection Society, to ensure that our Zakynthos turtle spotting boat trips and boat excursions are eco-friendly . On board our Nefis Travel Zakynthos boat , which is authorized by the National Marine Park, we will introduce you to the official staff guides of the Greek Archelon society. They will explain the important information about the turtles and their biology.

For our boat trip VIP Eco-friendly turtle spotting tour , you will be picked by the Nefis Travel Zakynthos luxury coach from nearly every resort in Zante . We will depart on this turtle spotting excursion around 8.30 AM and you’ll return around 1.45 PM (the times are depending on the resort you will be staying). In the high season the trip is also available in the afternoon. We board the turtles spotting boat trip at the picturesque harbour of Agios Sostis. From here we go for our first turtle spotting adventure. We nearly always have the chance to take a snapshot of these enchanting animals up close.

Zakynthos turtle spotting tour

We stop to Turtle Island Caves and swim with the brightly colored fish – this is a fantastic place for snorkeling. We stay around the caves and beach for around 35 minutes so you really have a chance to relax and enjoy.

Sailing on from Zakynthos Turtle Island , on this boat excursion, we head to the Keri Caves , enjoying the beautiful coastal scenery of Zante along the way. At the Keri Caves we drop anchor for another swimstop. You have the opportunity to swim and snorkel around the Keri Caves , and to listen to the Archelon guides presentation about the biology of the turtles and their on-going research work. During our boat trip there is also a small shop on board selling turtle souvenirs – all purchases support the work of the Sea protection society Archelon. You can even adopt a turtle to support its journey!

On our way back to Agios Sostis, we try to have one final turtle spotting experience in case we didn’t see them in our first attempt.

We set off on the turtle tour which was fantastic, we spotted 3 turtles and the ladies o the boat gave us a great lesson in the loggerhead turtle. My children loved it and we had two swim stops! Other boats went by that were absolutely packed with people and I was so great full that I hadn’t booked with the girl reps!

We took the eco friendly turtle tour when we visited zante in june 2019. Our tour guide was amazing and the trip was so much fun. We learnt so much about these beautiful animals and there lives and how they come to the island to breed. The trip on the boat around the island was breathtaking the scenery is fabulous. Later in the afternoon we had two snorkeling stops which was great. Would def recommend this trip to anyone and always with nefis travel xx 🙂

We booked the half day turtle tour on line & collected the tickets & paid at the local office. This tour was chosen as it is the only one we found that had a link to Archelon Society for the protection of the turtles. We were picked up by minibus & taken to meet the larger coach & the tour guide told us all about the areas we passed through. The boat tour took us around the island & we managed to see 4 turtles. The talk from the Archelon volunteers was very interesting & not at all pushy when they sold there products. I would highly recommend this tour

Had a boat trip with turtle spotting and swim stops. They actually care about obeying laws that protect the turtles, whereas we could see other companies not doing so. Awesome tour guide and ship crew. Totally worth it.

Having seen and heard of the mad scramble to see turtles, and having previously enjoyed Nefis tours, we booked their turtle spotting tour, as it has members of Achelon, the turtle protection society on board. They gave loads of information, and explained about the protection of the turtles. Another great trip with Nefis.

Steph and Craig

Hi Jackie and everyone at Nefis Travel, we just wanted to say a huge thank you for the two wonderful trips with you during our stay in Tsilivi. We thouroughly enjoyed both trips, it was lovely arriving at shipwreck bay to have the beach to ourselves for almost an hour, it was well worth the early start! We found the information given by Jackie on both tours interesting and enjoyable, we also have a lot of respect for the captain of our boat during the turtle spotting trip for obeying the rules of the marine park, unlike some of the other boats we seen! Nefis Travels trips are well worth the money, and we will highly recommend you to our families and friends. Many thanks again, if we return to Zante in the future we will be seeing you all again x x

Viv Maurice

If you go anywhere while in Zante go on a trip with Jackie, we went on the turtle trip and it was brilliant,Jackie is one of the best tour guides I have ever been out with. The boat is small and the captain and crew are really helpful ,The talk about the turtles was so interesting, will see you next year.Viv ,Libby & Abmer

Thank you for the great time that I spent with you Jackie, especially listening you singing in those beautiful tavernas and trying to see turtles in Laganas bay. I will have to come again to see baby turtles later on. Best regards from Nena

We will do our very best to give you the pickup service transfer with a small extra cost, but we do ask cooperation in being flexible with the days and cannot guarantee a pick up from these areas.

Can I participate in the VIP tours, with my rental car?

You can join our boat trips with your rental car. You can book tickets by email or through our booking form and meet us at the port where we will board our Shipwreck and Blue Caves tour and the Turtle Spotting tour. In this way you have the freedom of your own transport and you will enjoy arriving at the Shipwreck bay before the crowds, see the turtles in an eco-friendly way and help the turtles in their fight for survival.

Are the tours child friendly and what is considered child age?

Our child age is normally 12 years old, but we can be flexible on our "VIP Eco-friendly turtle spotting" tour and "Back to the roots" minibus island tour, if families are travelling with teenagers.

On our VIP "Once upon a time" tour the children and young at heart will step back in time and by interactive stories will enter the world of Aesop and his enchanting and inspiring stories. They will learn a little Greek poem and while we sit around the camp fire singing songs, you might drift away to your own childhood memories… On our VIP Eco-friendly turtle spotting tour , we will have a presentation from the Sea Protection Society Archelon where the children will learn about the high endangered Caretta - Caretta Turtles and in a pirate game they will also learn a few facts about Odysseus while looking for the treasure. At our VIP "Back to the roots" tour they will hear a few nice short Greek mythology stories and see and learn how Zakynthian olive oil and local sweet are made. They can sing along with the live music over lunch and the tour has many stops, what means that they will be out and about and entertaint the whole day. Many of our little Nefis friends have send us beautiful drawings, from this unique tour afterwards. At our VIP Shipwreck and Blue Caves tour the children might see dolphins or our Monachus Monachus seals and get guided with nice stories about Zante. On certain days they will be able to enter a pirate game at the Smugglers Cove, please do ask about this opportunity! Our family tours are designed to spark a passion, inspire a sense of wonder, and enrich understanding.

With Nefis Travel you can indeed enjoy the freedom to choose a tour now and pay later! Our unique customer service is created for your convenience. For guests staying on a far distance, a payment in advance will be requested.

Do you have group discounts?

We can indeed look into a tailor-made discount for groups.

What happens if the sea conditions are not okay for a tour?

We at Nefis Travel provide the highest level of customer service given on the island. If the weather reports are bad, we will cancel the tours and give you a refund. If the weather shows a 50-50 situation, we will phone you on your mobiles or at the hotels before the tour starts and tell you that we might have to use an alternative program. This only happens on the Shipwreck and Blue Caves tours. The east coast of the island as in Blue Caves and Xingia Sea Spa and the west coast as in Shipwreck beach is possible to have 2 totally different sea conditions. Our captains will check the situation early in the morning and if we see that the Blue Caves and Xingia Spa, east coast are okay but around cape Skinari on our way to the west coast, the sea doesn’t allow us to go to the Shipwreck beach, we will create Plan B: Plan B: We will go to the Shipwreck platform by bus so you'll see the Shipwreck from above and we will offer extra time at the Blue Caves for pictures and swimming, and go to the Xingia Sea Spa after our lunch stop. We will tell you honestly what the situation is and leave the choice to you. You can swap your trip around and go on another day, take a refund or decide to come. From our experience those who came on these few rare days that this happens in the summer, still had a great day out. And as we said it is a 50-50 situation sometimes the wind drops, while we drive to the harbor and we can still sail to the Shipwreck beach. We at Nefis Travel just want to be as straight forward about as we can be and will always be honest about the weather conditions.

Turtle Cruise (glass bottom boat) & Sunset Tour (mini bus)

Cruise departure : 11.00am, Sunset tour departure : 18.00pm

A unique Land and Sea experience on South (Turtle cruise) and West (Sunset Instagram Tour) in Zakynthos.

Join this Combo (Land and Sea) Experience and feel your concerns soften away as you appreciate the stunning all encompassing perspectives on Zakynthos, also called Zante too!

The cruise begins in the morning around 11.00 am when you are picked up by mini-bus from your accomodation, to be brought toward the South of Zante. Upon appearance the unwinding starts as you board the journey in the beautiful harbor of Agios Sostis. As the boat leaves Agios Sostis harbor, passing the well known Cameo Island you will be amazed of the harbor horizon as well as the splendid turquoise waters of the Ionian sea.

The glass bottom boat sails towards the picturesque Marathonisi island , otherwise called Turtle Island, where the boat stops for photos and swimming for around 60 min while your guide clarifies about this astonishing white sandy sea shore and island, referred to for its significance as a settling territory of the Caretta loggerhead turtles.

During your time there, you will also be visiting the Turquoise caves where our captain will sail you inside to explore and capture this unique beauty.

After the cruise, you will be driven by mini-bus back to your accomodation or anywhere else from where you will picked up later (around 18:00pm) to your sunset area choice, either Keri, either Agalas, either Kampi or Shipwreck panoramic view point.

In the end you will be dropped off to hotel or airport if you are flying the same day.

The 10 best things to do in Zante

Z ante is renowned for raucous nightlife, but there’s a far more authentic side to the Venetians 'Fiore di Levante' (flower of the Levante) .

For such a small island, scenery is extremely varied: the southern coastline - home to Laganas’ notorious nightlife strip - also encompasses the pristine beaches of Zakynthos Marine Park, where loggerhead sea turtle come to nest, whilst some of the island’s best-known attractions, including Navagio beach on the cliff-lined northerly coast, can only be reached by boat.

Birthplace of the man who penned Greece’s national anthem, Zante was also a magnet for literary greats: Byron lay in state here and philhellene Edgar Allan Poe wrote a sonnet to the island’s ‘verdant slopes’.

Last but not least, food is a powerful lure here: sit in a rustic sea view tavern sipping local Verdea white wine with a plate full of traditional kouneli stifado garlic and tomato-soaked rabbit stew and you’ll be hooked.

For further Zante inspiration, see our guides to the isalnds's best  hotels ,  restaurants  and  nightlife . Plan an extended visit with our  ultimate guide to planning a Greek island-hopping holiday.

Take the train

The white trainaki (little train) which trundles out of Zante town to Kalamaki’s café-lined beach – stopping off en route to discover perfume workshops (scents are inspired by Mediterranean landscapes), and ceramic workshops selling Byzantine-style crocks – is an ideal and eco-friendly way to see the island’s sights. Another train leaving from Alykes beach chugs through ancient olive groves to visit the high flung mountain villages of Katastari and Pigadakia, and culminates in a boozy tasting session – local Graigos wine served with spicy lado tyri cheese and other specialties in the tree-shaded tavern Kaki Rahi.

Insider's tip:  Travel sickness sufferers should sit near the front.

Contact: trainaki.com

Discover the wildlife

Zante is a haven for the endangered loggerhead turtle that clamber ashore to lay their eggs on the protected beaches of Zakynthos’ Marine Park. Other critically endangered species that can be found frolicking in this protected zone, which stretches from wild and lonely Cape Marathia to Gerakas’ talc-soft beach, include doe-eyed Mediterranean monk seals. To get up close without disturbing them, take a day trip to Marathonissi – better known as Turtle Island – with eco-friendly experts Nefis Travel.

Insider's tip: Never disturb the turtles, or stay on the beaches after sunset when they could be nesting or hatching out.

Contact: nefis-travel.com

Hitch a boat ride

Some of the island’s best attractions can only be reached by boat: Skinari is the starting point for half-day excursions to get a glimpse of Navagio, or Shipwreck beach, the dramatically picturesque cliff-framed sandy cove which earns its name from the rusted hulk of the MV Panagiotis, washed up here after an epic storm in the 1980s. Most trips also stop off at the Blue Caves, so-called because their pale limestone walls give the sea a ghostly turquoise hue.

Insider's tip: The Navagio viewpoint near Volimes village is accessible by road, but it’s impossible to access the beach from this high-flung spot.

Meet the literatis

Dig deep into the soul of this culture-loving island at the Solomos Museum, which is dedicated to Greece’s national poet, who was born here in 1798. The poet’s primrose-yellow neoclassical home, which was bombed during the Second World War, contains an eclectic and fascinating selection of the writer’s personal artefacts: look out for the desk where Dionysios penned the country’s rousing national anthem in 1823 and the mausoleum on the ground floor which contains the poet’s bones.

Insider's tip: Don’t miss the other rooms dedicated to the life and times of other famous island scholars, including celebrated Greek Revolution poet Andreas Kalvos.

Contact: zakynthos-museumsolomos.gr

Stroll the streets of Zante town

Destroyed by a major earthquake in 1953, then rebuilt in Venetian style, Zante town’s (semi-pedestrian) paved streets are lined with an elegant collection of buildings – low and well proportioned, with porticoes and pastel-painted facades – many of them are home to cafés and craft boutiques.

Insider's tip : Look out for the Provençal-style façade of Archontiko Roma. One of the few buildings that wasn’t reduced to rubble, this 17th-century mansion which once belonged to President of the Greek Parliament Alexander Roma is now a small museum – family portraits, works of art and period furniture give an intriguing insight into the once lavish lifestyle of the island’s aristocracy, but it is not often open so call before visiting.

Admire the views

A winding road just outside of Zante town leads to Bochali, a pretty pine-scented suburb where the ruined battlements of the island’s battered 15th-century castle offer eagle-eye views over Zante’s red-tiled roofs, glittering harbour and the dense pine forests and sand beaches of distant Vassilikos peninsula. Enter the incense-scented Zoodoxo Pigi church to see richly gilded Byzantine icons, and then hike back down to Bochali village nearby and order a beer and meze snacks in one of the cafés clustered around the square.

Insider's tip:  Phone in advance to check that the church is open.

Roam with local deer

Families will love Askos Stone Park, named for its pond-sized 13th-century stone cisterns, whose tranquil green waters now squawk with ducks. Friendly guides lead walks out along the wooded hiking trails of this small nature park surrounded by dense pine forest: to pluck and sniff the wild thyme and oregano used to flavour countless local dishes, or to (hopefully) encounter Roe deer that run wild here. Children can also pick peaches and apples in the orchard or pet the farm animals which include portly pot-bellied pigs and fluffy chinchilla rabbits.

Insider's tip:  Buy handcrafted goats cheese and homemade jams from the farm shop.

Contact: 00 30 26950 31650; facebook.com

Visit a winery

Historically, most of the island’s grape production was exported as currants – even so, Zante’s dry, highly alcoholic wine is well worth sampling in one of the island’s half a dozen wineries. The typical local wine is the oak-barrel-aged, intensely flavoured, highly acidic white Verdea, which has been produced here since the 19th century – another must-try is the silky-sweet Lianoroidi white. Sample both at Art and Wine, the Giatras-Gkoumas family’s century-old wine estate in the island’s north east region. Owner Giannis is also a skilled icon painter.

Insider's tip: Hire a car – most wineries are well off the beaten track.

Contact: artandwine.gr

Learn about the local olive oil

The 2,000-year-old olive tree in the village of Exo Hora is living proof that world class extra virgin olive oil has been produced on Zante for millennia. Aristeon Olive Press is a (rather characterless) modern factory producing some of the island’s best organic oil, but the small well-organised museum inside is packed with olive oil-making paraphernalia – age-pitted stone mills, ancient wooden presses and tall clay pots. An informative guided visit is followed by a tasting session, when crusty local bread is dipped into fruity green oil.

Insider's tip:  Visits are free but remember to tip the guide.

Hike to a high place

From the resort of Kalamaki on Zante’s south east coast, it’s a long, steep hike along thyme-scented, boulder-strewn paths to reach Panagia Skopiotissa (the island’s oldest monastery), but it’s well worth it for the views from this lofty leafy mountaintop whose name – Skopos – means watchtower. The monastery has been abandoned for decades, but the walls of the stocky 15th-century church blaze with 17th-century frescoes – the real gem is the gilded Panagia Skopiotissa icon said to have been brought here from Constantinople in 1341.

Insider's tip: Ask for the keys to the church at Skopos’ small café.
