Destinations to discover with our Sailing Boat

Exclusive boat day charter, koh phangan.

A full-day day sailing around Samui is the perfect way to see this beautiful tropical island from a different perspective. Heading north-east from the boat’s mooring in Bang Rak Bay, you pass the magnificent golden landmark of the Big Buddha and round the point at Laem Samrong, before heading down the east coast past the beautiful bays of  Thong Sai and Choeng Mon on to the spectacular 7 km stretch of palm-fringed, shimmering white sand that is Chaweng Beach – the island’s most famous and most developed to tourism.

As you sail south past one luxury resort after another, the stunning strip of white sand at Lamai leads around the coastline to the more wild and scenic south coast of the island with its   mountainous backdrop, palm plantations and fishing villages.  Just off-shore the islands of Koh Mat Sum [also known as ‘Pig Island’ for its pig population] and Koh Tean which are relatively untouched and offer beautiful beaches, snorkeling and rustic local seafood restaurants.

As you round south-west tip of the island and head north up east coast, the distinctive sight of the 5 Islands outcrop greets you as you sail on past bay after bay of white sandy beaches, lush jungle-covered hills dotted with luxury villas and the island’s main town and key ferry port Nathon.

With the spectacular limestone archipelago of Ang thong National Marine Park off to the west, you eventually round the north-west tip of the island and along the scenic and well developed north coast with its luxury beach resorts and mountainous backdrop back to Bophut.

A magical, mountainous island which looms large on the horizon from the north coast of Samui, Koh Pha Ngan is also known as ‘Full-Moon Island’ for its monthly beach party at the small town of Haad Rin on the south-east coast  which attract more 20,000+ visitors.

Otherwise, the island is quiet and relatively undeveloped and scenically stunning with its lush, jungle-covered mountains and endless white sandy bays and beaches.

Sailing conditions on the more rugged and inaccessible east coast are ideal at certain times of the year when the south-west winds are blowing, at others, the west or sunset coast offers a different view with its low-hills and palm-fringed beaches and coves.

Just north of Haad Rin on the south-east coast, the picture-perfect Haad Yuan bay is the perfect  destination from Samui for a day of sublime sailing, swimming and beach walking.  A charming, rustic beach resort Bamboo Hut nestles among the boulders on the north side of the bay and is a must-visit known for its challenging wooden walkway, bamboo terrace, colourful clientele and stunning vista of the turquoise bay and mountains.

Sailing north from here, you pass deserted beaches in secluded bays, luxury resorts rub shoulders with small local resorts on stunning sandy stretches like Ao Thong Nai Pan or the picturesque Bottle Beach.

Once you round the north-west tip of the island at Ko Mah – known for the island’s best snorkeling grounds – a string of idyllic palm-fringed bays and coves with wondrous names like Salad Beach and Secret Beach, are home to endless small resorts and delightful beachside  restaurants and ideal for anchoring and going ashore to eat.

For an excellent and very comprehensive guide to sailing around the islands of Koh Samui, visit the following website:

Overnight Charter in a Luxury Boat

Angthong national park, koh madsum & koh tan.

This conservation area of 42 jungle-covered karst [limestone] islands is an area of immense natural beauty just 28 km from the north-west tip of Koh Samui.  Seen from the north and west coast of Samui, the archipelago runs north to south like a chain of mysterious islands hovering on the horizon.

Although many motorized boats make a day-trip fairly accessible, for sailing it’s a little too far for the day.  If you want to really explore this remarkable area with its myriad coves, caves, corals, lagoons, jungle-trails and beaches, plan on an overnight trip to experience it at its best.

It’s a paradise for swimming and snorkeling among the corals and caves or taking to your paddle board for a leisurely tour of the enchanting coves and inlets that surround these extraordinary islands.  Your experienced crew will know all the best places to go, so you can relax knowing you are in good hands.

The area is a national park and a highly protected natural area, so an entrance fee is applicable to every vessel that enters, otherwise, most of the archipelago is relatively untouched with the only restaurant and tourism area being at Koh Ang Thong.

This is the place to pack a picnic, all the ingredients for a barbecue and sail off to one of the many stunning islands to anchor and enjoy the peace and quiet and natural beauty of Thailand and hopefully to catch one of Samui’s famously epic sunsets.

Koh Tao (“Turtle Island” in Thai) lives up to its name, being one of the greatest scuba diving destinations in southern Thailand. The perfect white-sand beaches which ring the hilly 21-sq-km island are surrounded by the crystal-clear waters of the Gulf of Thailand. The compact island is about 60 km to the north of Samui and was only really “discovered” in the early 1980s, but now supports a varied selection of hotels, from budget guesthouses and beach bungalows up to 5-star luxury resorts. So far from civilisation and while still being relatively easily reached, it is the idyllic tropical island paradise.

Although popular for day tours by longtail boat from Thong Krut on Samui’s south-west coast, the small, neighbouring islands of Koh Mat Sum and Koh Tean are a little too far for a day-trip from the boat’s mooring in Bang Rak, so we recommend an overnight trip.

Koh Mat Sum is basically one long white sand beach with clear shallow water which has become well-known amongst Instagrammers for its population of rescued pigs, hence its moniker ‘Pig Island’.

Just nearby Koh Tean is well-known for its walkway through the mangrove swamp and its rustic local restaurants serving fresh seafood caught by the island’s fishermen.

The beautiful tropical islands are surrounded by reefs and ideal for lazy days swimming, snorkelling, fishing and paddle boarding around the corals and beaches.

Just to the west lies the distinctive group known as the ‘5 Islands’ on the south-west corner of Samui.  The waters around these precious bird’s nest collecting islands are deep and it’s fascinating to sail through the islands marveling at the small collectors’ shacks that cling to the steep cliff faces.

Koh Samui Tours and Day Trips – The 5 Best in 2024

Picture of Alesha and Jarryd

  • Last Updated: January 19, 2024

Make the most of your time in this island paradise with our list of the best Koh Samui tours and day trips!

When you think of Koh Samui, you may believe it’s all about beaches and kicking back at the swimming pool of 5-star resorts.

And of course yes, the beaches around Koh Samui are gorgeous, as are the infinite pools. But there is so much more to do here.

Koh Samui is Thailand’s second-largest island, located in the Gulf of Thailand and is the queen in the trio of popular islands here, with the other two being Koh Phangan and Koh Tao.

The size of this idyllic island allows for a huge diversity in the lush landscapes here, from mountainous jungle in the centre to sprawling coconut plantations in the flats.

While it is a popular getaway for couples in Thailand thanks to its romantic appeal, for those of us who love adventure to fill the day there is an abundance of awesome Koh Samui day trips and tours to make the most of your time here.

Whether you want to chill on a white sand beach in Ang Thong Marine Park, learn about the cultural attractions of the local Thai population or find some other hidden gems, our guide to the top Koh Samui tours will point you in the right direction.

Lookout Koh Samui Tours

Table of Contents

Visit the Ang Thong National Marine Park from Koh Samui

4wd eco jungle safari tour, koh nang yuan and koh tao tour by speedboat, visit the samui elephant sanctuary, join a thai cooking class, jet ski rentals, head to koh phangan for the full moon party, visit some of the other islands, the best koh samui tours – from islands to the jungle.

We highly recommend you have a read of our ultimate Koh Samui itinerary post for an idea of how to structure your trip here, and then pick and choose a great tour that matches your travel style.

No matter what you’re looking for, you’re sure to fall in love with Koh Samui’s epic activities .

Here is our list of the best tours in Koh Samui.

The minute you start to make plans to leave your accommodation, the very first thing you should do is book a Koh Samui day trip to Ang Thong Marine Park.

Located just 30km east of Koh Samui, the Ang Thong Marine Park is a stunning archipelago of 42 islands, and a day trip out to explore the park is one of the best adventures you can do while you’re here.

A typical Koh Samui tour of Ang Thong Marine Park will allow you to explore some of the best islands to visit near Koh Samui and epic viewpoints in the archipelago, including Mae Koh Island, home to the stunning Emerald Lagoon.

There are a number of ways to get out there, all with local tour operators, but we personally recommend booking a trip that uses a speedboat rather than a longtail boat.

A speedboat gets you from Koh Samui to the park faster, giving you more time to explore on your day trip.

Once you’ve made the journey across the sea from Koh Samui, the first stop is usually Koh Wao Yai or Koh Tay Plow, where you’ll get to snorkel in the crystal clear waters and coral reefs.

Your boat captain will then take you on a short sightseeing cruise around the archipelago before dropping the passengers off at Mae Koh Island for a short yet steep trek up to the viewpoint above Emerald Lagoon.

Emerald Lake Koh Samui

The landlocked Emerald Lake (also known as the Blue Lagoon) fills up from an underwater cave. You’re not allowed to swim in it because it’s a protected area, but it’s still beautiful to see!

Next it’s time to cruise onto the other side of the island and tackle what may just be the most difficult, yet rewarding, climb in the area – the Pha Jun Jaras Viewpoint.

Hundreds (or is it thousands?) of steps cut up the ridge of one of the highest points on the island, weaving through dense forest and intermittently broken up with lookouts along the way. The 500m length might not sound so bad, but you gain 250m in elevation.

As tough as it is, we highly recommend pushing on to the top, as the views you’ll get are beyond sensational, looking down on the archipelago and out to the endless horizon.

Once you’ve snapped your shots from the top head back down, take a dip and if you still have energy jump in a sea kayak for a paddle around the beach.

By now you’ve likely worked up an appetite, and luckily lunch is just around the corner.

Your speedboat will motor along to Koh Phaluai in the Angthong Marine Park for an enormous spread of delicious food, served out in the open and surrounded by palm trees and hornbill birds.

The island is still inhabited by sea-gypsies who earn a living from fishing. You can either take a sea kayak around or just relax on the secluded beach, Son Pee Hong Beach.

On this island the locals protect the amazing hornbills, so they hang out without any fear. Such cool little birds.

After your meal, it’s time to head back to Koh Samui, just in time for sunset drinks!

These full day tours include transport, an English-speaking guide the national park fee required for the shore excursion and your delicious lunch, but be sure to bring along extra snacks if you need, and sunscreen.

Lookout Island Tour Koh Samui

Much to most people’s surprise when they visit the island, one of the best Koh Samui tours isn’t just about being out on the water.

One of our absolute favourite tours heads inland instead, exploring the vast interior of the mountainous paradise.

The 4WD Wild Jungle Safari Tour is an incredible adventure land tour that takes you to a side of Koh Samui that most visitors never see

Also known as the Eco Jungle Tour, we knew we really wanted to do this Koh Samui day trip before we booked our most recent adventures in Thailand, and it didn’t disappoint. This tour operator runs an excellent day trip that gets reat reviews.

Picked up from our hotel by our driver Mr Soot and fantastic local guide Nina, the plan was to explore a more local side of Samui Island filled with culture, landscapes and secret gardens.

We started the day off with a visit to some local temples in Koh Samui, including the Big Buddha Temple and Wat Plai Laem.

Temples In Koh Samui

It’s so important to learn about the country’s culture, religion and people when you travel, and we were blown away at the intricacies and beauty of these temples.

Having a tour guide was well worth it, as Nina explained the subtle details in the architecture and how everything had a meaning and story behind it.

Next it was time to head into the mountains of Koh Samui, but before we gained too much elevation we stopped by a coconut plantation run by a local family.

The family are expert coconut harvesters (husking over 1000 coconuts in a single day’s work!), and we had a chance to watch the masters in action, and even try our hand at husking our own coconut.

Ladies With Coconut Business

Climbing into the misty mountains of Koh Samui is an adventure in itself, and we were thankful we were travelling in a 4×4, as the road was extremely steep, muddy and rutted.

After a break at a high lookout, the driver pointed to the seats on the roof of the 4×4 and asked if we wanted to sit on top for an adrenaline-filled drive to the summit.

Of course we couldn’t say no, so strapping in for the ride we hit the road, bouncing around, ducking under vines and laughing the whole way.

The rest of the day was filled with more visits to temples (including the highest one on Koh Samui), a delicious lunch at a local restaurant, and a wander around a rubber-tree farm.

One of the highlights was exploring the Buddha’s Magic Garden, a private nature park built deep in the forest of Koh Samui.

After a stop off at Namuang Waterfall we saw the bizarre rock formations around the Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks before being dropped off back at the hotel.

It was an action-packed day, filled with a healthy mix of culture, nature and adventure. Definitely one of the best Koh Samui tours you can do on the island!

Jarryd Riding On Top Of Vehicle

If you haven’t had enough of being out on the water, this is a great island tour if you want to see more of the stunning locations around Koh Samui.

A day trip out to Koh Nang Yuan and Koh Tao is an 8-hour adventure, so be prepared for an early start. It’s worth rising for though!

This Koh Samui tour heads out to the gorgeous island of Koh Tao (Turtle Island) by speedboat, which is a true laidback paradise.

Once you arrive on Koh Tao (check out our full guide on what to do there if you have more time) you’ll discover the spectacular coral reef at Hin Wong by going snorkelling, or one of the other bays nearby if conditions are right.

Snorkelling gear is supplied by the company, but you’re also welcome to bring your own to Koh Tao if you have it.

Boat With Reef Below

After some time exploring the underwater world of Koh Tao, the tour will head to the sandbar beaches of Koh Nang Yuan .

This small island off of Koh Tao is known for its amazing snorkelling, diving and beautiful white sandy beaches.

The sandbar between Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan was formed by ocean currents pushing between the 3 small peaks, loading sand up to connect them all together.

If you’re interested (and you should be), climb to the top of the Koh Nang Yuan viewpoint first. That way you’ll get the sweaty hike out of the way, and can enjoy a cool, refreshing swim after.

READ MORE: Check out our ultimate travel guide to Thailand !

It takes about 15 minutes to get to the top and the view is lovely, being the most famous one in Koh Nang Yuan.

Keep in mind that even though it’s one of the best Koh Samui day trips, it is a long day, so make sure you have at least a light breakfast before heading out, and take some seasickness tablets before departing if needed.

Pack sunscreen, your swimming suit, a hat, sarong or towel, and some footwear for the hike.

Most Koh Nang Yuan and Koh Tao tours include a Thai buffet lunch and water, and we highly recommend booking this particular one.

Once the trip ends you’ll be transported from Koh Tao back to your hotel in Koh Samui. Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan are two of the most beautiful Thai islands so don’t miss this opportunity!

Koh Nang Yuan Viewport

The Samui Elephant Sanctuary was opened in 2018 by local conservationist Maew Suriya, and since its creation, the sanctuary has rescued 14 elephants from the tourist-trekking and riding industry around Thailand.

It’s well-known by now that the elephant tourism industry in Southeast Asia has sadly resulted in the torture and deaths of countless animals, but thankfully a number of reputable sanctuaries have stepped in to protect these beautiful creatures.

Samui Elephant Sanctuary is one of the good ones, and here you can book in for a half day tour on Koh Samui to see the fantastic work they are doing and to learn about their rescued elephants.

Elephant In The Woods

Joining the morning or afternoon tour, you’ll prepare nutritious snacks to feed the elephants, and observe them wandering around their secluded environment.

There is no riding or bathing of the elephants here. Instead the elephants live a happy life under the protection of their mahouts, who keep them safe and cared for.

Seeing an elephant in Thailand is on a lot of visitor’s bucket lists, but please make sure you visit an ethical sanctuary like this one that doesn’t offer elephant rides.

Read more about this and other responsible travel methods in our comprehensive guide to sustainable tourism in Thailand .

Elephant Near Tree

This was one of the Koh Samui tours we would have loved to do, but unfortunately ran out of time. We were told about it by another traveller though and it sounds incredible!

We’ve done a few cooking classes around Thailand, specifically in Chiang Mai and Bangkok, and they are always a great day out.

Here on Koh Samui with this small group cooking school (limited to 6 people maximum) you learn about the traditional methods used to create some of the most popular Thai dishes, and you prepare everything in their well-equipped kitchen.

First you’ll visit a local market in Koh Samui to tour around and select your ingredients. Then you head to the local home to dive into the experience.

This isn’t about kicking back and watching the chef make the meals for you. Instead you choose from four traditional Thai dishes and are given hands-on instructions to make it all yourself under the friendly eye of a local professional.

You’re sure to have lots of laughs as you cook up a storm, and you’ll even finish off with a Thai dessert.

Hotel transfers, ingredients, cooking lessons with the expert chef and meals are included in this tour, and you’ll be given a recipe book to take home with you too.

Thai Food.

Bonus Trips

Those are our favourite Koh Samui tours, but there really is a lot more you can do if you have more time on the island.

Here are some other ideas to check out, from the famous Koh Phangan Full Moon Party to riding a jet ski or ATV around the area.

Looking to zip around between the white sand beaches of Koh Samui in fashion? Why not rent a jet ski for a few hours?

This adrenaline-fuelled day out is one of the most popular day trips on Koh Samui.

Explore the interior of the island on an ATV, crossing streams, sliding around on dirt roads and checking out some of the best scenery away from the coast.

This one isn’t really a day trip, as you need to spend the night on Koh Phangan . But if you like to dance, then why not do it at Thailand’s most (in)famous party on Koh Phangan?

A short boat ride away from Koh Samui and Koh Tao is Koh Phangan, another stellar tropical island with some of the best landscapes in the country.

Koh Phangan is a perfect getaway for those that love wellness and yoga, which is why we went there. But it’s also known for the huge raves that happen under the full moon.

Whether you want to party or just relax, Koh Phangan is an excellent stop before or after Koh Samui or Koh Tao.

Man Fire Twirling

There are a lot of other magical islands and beaches to explore around Koh Samui other than Koh Tao. You could spend days on day trips to all the gems in the Gulf of Thailand.

One of the more popular islands nearby is Koh Tan (or Koh Taen). Part of the Koh Samui Archipelago, Koh Tan is a small and stunning island just 5km south of Koh Samui. It’s also great for snorkeling.

Many day trip boat tours that visit Koh Tan also visit Koh Madsum, which is just a 10 minute boat ride from Ko Samui. Also known as the ‘Pig Island’, Koh Madsum (or Koh Mudsum), is a haven for snorkelling and swimming.

The sand on Koh Madsum is pure white, the water is refreshing and clear, and the island is home to a sanctuary of rescued pigs. It’s one of the most interesting Koh Samui day trips!

Koh Samui, Thailand’s second largest island, is known as a tropical paradise for tourists. Besides pristine beaches, lush landscapes, and vibrant culture, this year-round holiday spot is renowned for its hot, rainy, and humid seasons. This month-by-month guide is crafted to help you find the best times to plan Koh Samui luxury holidays .

With an average temperature between 25°C and 29°C, Koh Samui in January is ideal for enjoying the beaches and warm sea. Exploring green hills and coconut grooves is the bonus that comes with Koh Samui luxury holiday packages. Moreover, boat trips and water sports are the top attractions for tourists.

During this month, the island is in a festive mood. There is music, food, and fun events everywhere. It is the perfect time to taste unique Thai seafood and relax by the sea at night. For cultural enthusiasts, it is the best time for lively temple shows.  The Wat Phra Yai, known for its iconic Big Buddha statue, offers a calm retreat with panoramic views of the surrounding sea. Thus, don’t miss exploring the fun and peace of Koh Samui in January.

Weather in Koh Samui in February follows the same pattern as in January. It is dry with clear skies and a warm sun. The air is cooler not so humid. Hence, this month is the best time to have outdoor fun without worrying about rain.

For adventurers, it is the ideal period to experience hiking trails and visit natural waterfalls, like Na Muang and Hin Lad. Paddleboarding, kayaking, and floating on the beach water are the top attractions for luxury Koh Samui holidays. Those who are not into sea life can go for snorkeling and diving. The water is so clear that one can see the colorful fish and corals.

Besides beach fun, Koh Samui in February is renowned for many crowd-free local events. It is the time when tourists love visiting peaceful temples, like Wat Plai Laem and Big Buddha. Moreover, joining cooking classes, attending night markets, and tasting the local Thai food add more fun to one’s holiday trip.

In February, accommodation in Koh Samui is not only accessible but affordable as well. From fancy villas to cozy huts, there is something for everyone. So, if you want to experience the true charm of this island, plan your trip in February.

In contrast to the previous months, Koh Samui in March is fairly hot with a temperature of 30°C. The beaches aren’t too busy, allowing more room to relax and look for shells. Though the sun is strong, the cool sea breezes favor the outdoor fun activities. Adventures must go to the Ang Thong National Marine Park to see the beautiful lagoons and beaches.

This is the month when the island’s plants and trees start blooming and growing fruit. The March evenings at Koh Samui are ideal for outside dining and beach parties. Crowded markets, delicious foods, and unique cultural events during this month attract tourists.

Marking the month of Songkran, April in Koh Samui buzzes with the tourists’ energy. Songkran is the Thai New Year, full of fun and local customs. Tourists can enjoy traditional music and local dance everywhere. The decorated temples, crowded markets, and amazing food options make one feel like a part of the celebration.

Sweet mango rice and classic pad Thai are distributed among locals and visitors to spread joy. In the April evenings, people let go of lanterns into the sky, adding to the beauty of the island. One must plan Koh Samui luxury holidays in April to know more about Thai culture.

With a temperature of 33°C, May is the hottest month in Koh Samui. It is the perfect time for those who love the sun and swimming.  Equipped with swimming pools, the island’s luxury resorts invite tourists to relax and have fun. Moreover, one can also opt for private villas to chill out.

Those who don’t like the sun can visit indoor places, exhibiting local art and the island’s history.  Besides this, May is the ideal time to try the island’s spas. Here, tourists can relax with both old and new therapies.

Known for rain, June is the ideal month for snorkeling and diving. With little downpouring, the sea is clear to find fish and coral. Sometimes, tourists can even spot a turtle or a shark as well. Unlike the peak-season time, this month invites people to enjoy some alone time and take photos. Apart from beach fun, travelers can relax with a cold drink in the cozy cafes. One must visit Koh Samui in June to enjoy the island’s calmness and freshness.

July to September

July in Koh Samui marks the start of peak summer months that remain till September. Bringing a pattern of occasional showers, this rainy season turns the island’s scenery into a lush green oasis. The trees grow thicker, the flowers bloom into lively colors, and palm leaves dance in the wind. The best part of this season is the overflowing of the island’s waterfalls, like Na Muang and Hin Lad. The monsoon also ushers during these months, lessening crowds and making the island a more peaceful place to visit. The rainy season invites tourists to rejuvenate amidst nature’s wonders without the usual crowds.

In October, the busy high season is just around the corner. It is the time when the monsoon ends; the air feels fresh, and a bit cool. For tourists, there are a lot of local events to enjoy. It is the ideal time for outdoor fun, like hiking, going on safaris, or visiting the countryside. The best part of this month is the availability of affordable accommodations. One can even stay in fancy resorts without spending too much. Thus, October is the perfect time for tourists who want to enjoy calmness before the start of the busy season.

November is the perfect time for walking around the island’s busy markets and tasting delicious food. This month is full of fun, music, and crowds. From spicy Tom Yum soup to sweet Mango Sticky Rice, tourists have countless food options to try on. Moreover, November is a great chance to know the local culture and attend many festivals. For adventurers, the ocean is clear and perfect for snorkeling or diving. Those who go inland can hike through the green forests and find fauna and waterfalls. All in all, it is the time to see the island at its best.

Being the coolest month on the island, December makes the place feel like a big holiday party. Everything is dressed up with lights and colorful decorations. This is the time when the island is at its peak. One can hear holiday songs at each corner, buy gifts from the crowded markets, and taste the yummy local food from different shops.

Beaches and hotels are pretty full of people during this month. Sunny days are perfect for going out and enjoying sailing and surfing. Nature lovers can go on tours to explore flora and fauna. Plus, one can join in the local dances and feasts that are part of the island’s traditions. Hence, December is all about fun, relaxation, and adventure. Don’t miss enjoying this exciting time.

Koh Samui's emerald lagoons and pink soup: Exploring Thailand's weird and wonderful island paradise

We boarded Scoot’s inaugural flight to the scenic Thai island and discovered naughty rock formations, exotic food and why you should make a girl grind coconuts before you think about marrying her.

Business class is great and all, but have you had the thrill of being the first bum to occupy a brand new seat on a brand new airplane?

Those of us boarding Scoot’s fresh-off-the-production-line Embraer E190-E2s for six of the airline’s routes got to inhale that “new seat” smell and revel smugly in the knowledge that, in entirely scientific terms, the presence of other people’s leftover molecules was negligible.

As my posterior made contact with the cool smoothness of the seat’s pristine pleather, the singularity of that moment washed over me: How many people can say they have boldly gone where no bum has gone before?

I was on board Scoot’s inaugural flight to Koh Samui, one of the airline’s latest new destinations made possible by the acquisition of the Embraer E190-E2s – Singapore’s first planes from the Brazilian aircraft manufacturer.

boat tour koh samui

This particular plane had been christened Small Yella Fella (in lettering on the side of the plane) and, designed for short to medium routes, it is little with a huge advantage: Its 112 seats are in a two-by-two configuration, eliminating the dreaded middle seat.

A smooth two hours later, we touched down in Koh Samui, Thailand, to a welcoming fanfare of a water canon parade, officials holding a banner, and flower garlands placed around the necks of every single passenger.

This, combined with the powerful effect of Koh Samui’s al fresco airport designed to look like an 80s tropical resort complete with thatched roofs, bean bags and golf buggies, succeeded in immediately putting me in a holiday mood, in a destination widely known as a Thai island paradise.

boat tour koh samui

But I was, of course, here for work, and there was a full, structured itinerary of things the local tourism folks had appointed for me to see, do and write about, all requiring strict journalistic professionalism.

Such as the very first attraction they took me to: A rock shaped like a particular part of the male anatomy.

boat tour koh samui

This natural, coastal rock formation is known as “Hin Ta” or “grandfather” in Thai, and is a cylindrical column rising skywards that looks, from all angles, like a body part you would not want to think about in conjunction with your own grandfather.

But, as a metaphor for nature and how we are all children of the earth, it is quite poetic, especially because next to it is another rock formation known as “Hin Yai” or “grandmother”, which is quite hard to locate unless you know exactly where it is.

Other cultural monuments on the island have to do with Buddhism, like the picturesque 12m-tall Buddha at Wat Phra Yai, known as the Big Buddha Temple; or they have to do with the first Chinese settlers who arrived in the mid-1800s, like a 16m tall statue of general Guan Yu in a dedicated shrine.

boat tour koh samui

However, judging by the comparatively large number of tourists at the Hin Ta Hin Yai rocks, it is quite clear which attraction wins the popularity contest.

THE ISLANDER LIFE

But it is stunning beaches and beautiful blue-green waters that Koh Samui is known for, and there are beach resorts a-plenty to choose from, like The Sarann where I spent my first night, which offers rustic villas and chill vibes. Or, if you saved some money by flying here on a budget carrier, you could possibly justify splashing out on a swanky villa with a private pool at W Koh Samui, where I spent my next two nights; or a swish ocean-view room or villa at the newly opened, adults-only Explorar resort.

boat tour koh samui

To immerse in sun, sea and sand, we headed to Ang Thong Marine National Park, a collection of around 40 small islands reached by speedboat, about 20km from Koh Samui.

On the main island, known as Ko Wua Ta Lab, you can hike the rocky Pha Jun Jaras Nature Trail for breathtaking views, but this is not for the physically unfit (I only made it to the 200m viewpoint before my thighs started crying at the thought of climbing back down; for context, the top of the mountain is 500m up).

boat tour koh samui

The views of the emerald ocean from a vantage point are truly stunning though, and we even spotted beautiful wild dusky spectacled langurs in the trees. These primates aren’t scarily aggressive like the denizens of MacRitchie – local guides ensure tourists don’t feed them, so they don’t approach humans.

On Mae Ko island is a much easier (although still strenuous) climb up a series of very narrow steps to a viewpoint overlooking what’s known as the Blue Lagoon or Emerald Lake. It’s worth breaking a sweat for as the water is a deeply mesmerising shade of brilliant turquoise. Jumping in for a swim, tempting as it may be, is strictly prohibited. Not only is the drop dangerously steep, “We don’t know what might be living in the water,” our guide intoned.

boat tour koh samui

At Na Thap island, we pushed off from the shore in kayaks to explore the pretty coastline, gliding in and out of natural cave formations. And on our way back to Koh Samui, our boat stopped for a spot of snorkelling amid corals and fish.

COCONUT EVERYTHING

Before the tourism boom in Koh Samui, the island’s economy was built on coconuts. The family-run Coconut Museum is a small testament to its history of growing, harvesting and trading coconuts. In addition to a small museum display, the facility still farms and processes coconuts. Following traditional methods, the fruit of the tallest trees are picked by trained monkeys, owner Nuttapul Soralamb revealed; there is even a monkey training school.

boat tour koh samui

He also told me that in the past, life was so coconut-intensive that the fruits were also instrumental in matchmaking. If you were a young man looking to settle down, it would be pretty hard to meet girls, as they were kept at home away from prying eyes such as your own. So, you would stand outside the kitchen area of an eligible bachelorette’s house and listen to the sounds of her de-husking and grinding coconuts. From this, you would learn whether she was a fast and efficient worker and would make a good wife, or was slacking off, dilly-dallying and doing her chores halfheartedly.

Soralamb did not say how you would be able to tell who was in fact doing the coconut grinding, but his parents and grandparents were all in the coconut business, so he’s living proof that it all worked out.

boat tour koh samui

These days, he also makes products like extra virgin coconut oil for sale, and hosts coconut cooking classes. He and his family gave a demonstration on the making of kalamae, a traditional coconut caramel candy that Koh Samui is known for. Made from coconut milk, coconut sugar and glutinous rice flour, the chewy, sticky, pyramid-shaped sweet bears a family resemblance to the kalamay in the Philippines and the dodol in many Southeast Asian countries. Traditionally wrapped in banana leaf and shaped into a triangle, the sweet treat was enjoyed at new year and wedding celebrations. Today, you typically find it wrapped in plastic for sale – and as a dutiful tourist, I had to buy some – but it’s still a tasty snack.

boat tour koh samui

For a full meal, there’s no shortage of adorably charming beachfront restaurants, like family-run Hug Samui, where you dine against the backdrop of a stunning sunset, lapping waves and, if you’re lucky, a fire show on the beach after dark.

Koh Samui has 11 restaurants that have been listed in the Michelin Guide, like the beachside Baan Suan Lung Khai, which serves the freshest catch of the day from local fishermen; and Kapi Sator, where I discovered an eye-popping dish specific to the island: A species of local octopus, handpicked from sandy beaches, cooked in coconut milk.

boat tour koh samui

This dish stood out by a mile because it looks like, well, pink bubblegum soup. Its purplish-rose colour comes from the cooked octopus, and the sweet milkiness of the dish is balanced out by the addition of shrimp paste, fragrant lemongrass, chilli and, at this restaurant, pearl onions.

It was with some trepidation, thanks to the unnatural pastel hue, that I lifted the first spoonful to my lips. But, it turned out to be very tasty and undoubtedly the most memorable dish of the trip.   I left Koh Samui with a distended belly, a glowing tan and a deep, newfound respect for coconuts.
