Upcoming Star Trek TV Shows: What's Ahead For The Sci-Fi Franchise

Here's what's ahead for Star Trek.

It’s a golden era for Star Trek tv shows, as the franchise is churning out more content than ever before. Fans with a Paramount+ subscription can stream a plethora of old and new content from one of the greatest sci-fi franchises of all time.

There’s a ton of new Star Trek content coming in the future, including the debut of a new show as well as the return of all the ones fans already know well. For those who need a breakdown of what all to expect, look no further because here’s where and when all the new Trek will arrive in 2023 and beyond. There’s even some information on planned shows that aren’t quite ready yet, but hopefully, we’ll see them soon enough. 

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 - Premiering On April 4th 2024

Captain Michael Burnham and the crew are back, and based on what we've seen and heard about Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 so far, some changes are on the way. Season 5 will see the crew race against others in an attempt to secure an ancient power, and will apparently have a tonal shift that will skew more toward action and adventure. We also learned that this coming season will be the final adventure , as Paramount+ decided to end the series after this coming season. The final season will kick off in April and, fingers crossed, leave an avenue open for more stories with these characters in the 32nd century. 

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 - In Production

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is coming back for Season 3, and is currently filming for the upcoming season. It's likely the season will kick off with the second part of the adventure started in the Season 2 finale . Pike must decide whether or not he's going to listen to Starfleet and retreat to avoid further conflict with the Gorn or to stay and try to save the kidnapped crew members. I have a hunch I know what decision he'll make, but I'm also very invested in seeing if Scotty will remain with the crew and what other adventures will come as well. 

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 - Coming In 2024

Paramount+ originally renewed Star Trek: Prodigy for Season 2, but announced later that it had been canceled alongside other shows on the platform. While the news was a bummer to many and encouraged responses from stars like Kate Mulgrew , there is a silver lining. After some talk with other companies, Paramount managed to negotiate a deal where the series will transition over to Netflix , and Season 2 will release over there. At this time, it's unknown whether or not this will lead to more seasons of Prodigy , but fans are thankful they'll at least get to see the season that was being worked on coming up in 2024. 

Section 31 Movie - Production Underway

Section 31 was one of the first Star Trek spinoffs announced after Discovery , and yet it took the longest to get off the ground. The series was supposed to Michelle Yeoh ’s Phillipa Georgiou and her efforts in the secret ops Starfleet faction that does the jobs that others in the organization would rather not know about. Other former Discovery stars, like Shazad Latif, were involved at one point, but some believed the odds of it happening aren't great after Michelle Yeoh's Oscar win .

It turns out Yeoh was interested in making it happen, and Paramount+ decided to alter the idea to a movie . Fans are excited about the project all the same, and ready to see Michelle Yeoh back in her role. Production on the film is officially underway, and it's looking like a premiere sometime in late 2024 to 2025 is likely.

Starfleet Academy - Production Starting In 2024

Alex Kurtzman revealed not long ago that Star Trek is actively working on another new live-action series , and it’s going to be set at Starfleet Academy. Of course, we don’t know exactly what era this series is set to take place during or who is going to star in it yet. We don’t really know much of anything, though it’s worth noting that Star Trek: Discovery did write off its character Tilly when she took an offer at Starfleet Academy. The episode where that happened seemed like it could be a backdoor pilot for the show, but again, we have no idea. We do know that the writer's room is underway, but details are scant beyond that.  

As shown above, there’s still a ton of Star Trek on the way in 2024, and beyond. The only way to watch these shows is with a Paramount+ subscription , which is totally worth picking up with the increasing amount of shows and movies available to watch.

Strange New Worlds release date, trailer, cast, plot and timeline for the Star Trek spinoff

The classic voyages of the original Enterprise begin anew.

Boldly go! Of all the new Star Trek projects, Strange New Worlds probably has fans the most excited, if only because it seems poised to be the one series that feels the most like “regular Star Trek.” Just a few short years ago, it would be hard to imagine yet another Star Trek prequel whipping the fandom into a lather. And yet, Strange New Worlds is poised to really, truly, take the Trek franchise back to boldly going basics. Here’s everything we know so far.

As Discovery and Picard continue to chart a course into Trek’s future, one part of the Trek franchise is keeping a nostalgic boot firmly planted in its colorful past. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is the next new series in this expanding universe, and it's swimming in nostalgia even though not a single legacy actor is involved with the project. Unlike Star Wars, Star Trek continues to boldly recast legacy characters. Here’s what that looks like for Strange New Worlds .

When is the Strange New Worlds release date?

Strange New Worlds Season 1 will hit Paramount+ May 5, 2022. Season 2 is already in production. It looks like each season will be 10 episodes long.

Is there a Strange New Worlds trailer?

There are several videos that are basically different kinds of Strange New Worlds trailers. The first proper video was released in 2021 and was called “Meet the Characters.” More recently, there’s been a teaser trailer that focused on Captain Pike riding a horse, and boundless outer space optimism, in a decidedly pointed pivot away from darker, grittier, Star Trek.

What is the plot of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ?

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a new ongoing TV series set in the 23rd century probably about 5 years before the classic show. It was announced on May 15, 2020, in a video message from Ethan Peck, Anson Mount, and Rebecca Romijn. The cast repeatedly suggested this project came into being because fans wanted it . The show will take place in established Star Trek continuity (Prime Timeline), but during a period that has not been extensively depicted.

Why is it called Strange New Worlds ?

The title "Strange New Worlds," is taken from Captain Kirk's opening narration from the classic Star Trek.

Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no man has gone before!

In subsequent versions of Star Trek , this narration was changed: in TNG the "five-year mission" became "continuing mission" and "where no man" became "where no one." It's a good bet that if there's an opening narration from Captain Pike in Strange New Worlds , that he will say "five-year-mission" and "where no one has gone before." In canon, this speech is considered to be the motto of Starfleet, and in the J.J. Abrams movie Star Trek Into Darkness (which featured a different Captain Pike) it was called "the captain's oath."

Where is Strange New Worlds in the Star Trek timeline?

Strange New Worlds is a sequel to Discovery Season 2, a sequel to Star Trek: Enterprise , and a prequel to The Original Series . Presumably, the show will chronicle a five-year mission commanded by Captain Pike from roughly 2258-ish to 2263-ish. For context, this is how it shakes out.

• 2150s-2160s Star Trek: Enterprise
• Early 2254: Short Treks episode "Q&A"; Spock's first day on the Enterprise
• 2254: "The Cage"; first (initially) unaired 1965 Star Trek pilot. Also, the first (filmed) appearance of Spock, Pike, and Number One
• 2256-2258: Star Trek: Discovery Seasons 1 and 2
• 2258-2263(?) Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
• 2265-2270 Star Trek: The Original Series .
• 2270s-2290s Star Trek classic movies
• 2360s-2401: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, TNG movies , Lower Decks, and Picard.
• 3189-?: Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 and Season 4.

Trek canon has established that Pike commanded two consecutive five-year missions on the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 prior to Kirk taking command in 2265. (Though in some old canon this was 2264.) The events of "The Cage" on Talos IV happen before Discovery and Strange New Worlds , and the Short Treks episode "Q&A" happens before all of that. Pike’s temporary command of the USS Discovery in Discovery Season 2 was seemingly a blip in between back-to-back five-year missions on the Enterprise .

In theory, Strange New Worlds might have taken place between 2254 and 2257, which would then make it a prequel to Discovery and a weird midquel to "The Cage." However, Akiva Goldsman said the showrunners are not "hitting the reset button," on the characters, which confirms the series will take place after Discovery Season 2. So, 2258 or 2259 is a good bet. Goldsman also told the Hollywood Reporter in April 2021 , that various aspects of the Strange New Worlds' aesthetic will be made to look like it matches up closer to The Original Series . This means that yes, the uniforms and the design of the Enterprise have changed again, slightly .

“It's a fine line because obviously we want to keep continuity with the storytelling and the style, but we also want Strange New Worlds to be a different show. It's not Discovery . There are a few more reach-backs (to The Original Series ) and the uniforms have been adjusted slightly, the sets are slightly different. Remember the Enterprise existed as a little piece of [the show Discovery ] but now its its own object. When you close your eyes and think of the key sets and situations that you think of The Original Series , that's what we're looking to do.”

Because Strange New Worlds is literally taking place so close to The Original Series , it will be an interesting dance to see how exactly Pike, Spock, and everybody else is dressed. Will Spock switch back to a gold shirt at some point? (He wears gold in “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” the second TOS pilot episode.)

Who is in the cast of Strange New Worlds ?

Here’s the full regular cast of Strange New Worlds, all crew members of on the USS Enterprise NCC-1701:

• Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike
• Ethan Peck as Spock
• Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley AKA “Number One”
• Celia Rose Gooding as Cadet Nyota Uhura
• Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel
• Babs Olusanmokun as Dr. M’Benga
• Bruce Horak as Chief Engineer Hemmer (an off-shoot of the Andorian species called an Aenar.)
• Christina Chong as Security Chief La’an Noonein-Singh
• Melissa Navia as Flight Controller Lt. Erica Ortegas

As of March 2022, Paramount+ started rolling out 30-second videos that highlight different members of the crew. These videos have included insights into Uhura, La’an, Erica Ortegas, M’Benga, Chapel, and Hemmer. Each video (embedded above) feels like a miniature trailer!

Season 2 of Strange New Worlds will also feature Paul Wesley as James T. Kirk. (But we don’t know if he’s a Captain, yet.)

How does Strange New Worlds connect to Discovery and Short Treks ?

The 2018 Season 1 finale of Discovery ended with the arrival of the USS Enterprise, though we didn't see anyone inside. 2019’s Season 2 re-introduced Pike, Spock, and Number One. Captain Pike was in every single episode of Discovery Season 2, the adult Spock started appearing from episode 7 onward, and Number One appeared in three episodes.

After that, Pike appeared in three Short Treks , "Q&A," "The Trouble With Edward," and "Ask Not." Number One and Spock only appeared in "Q&A" and at the very end of "Ask Not."

These versions of Pike, Spock, and Number One are the in-canon versions of the characters previously portrayed by Jeffrey Hunter (Pike), Leonard Nimoy (Spock), and Majel Barrett (Number One) in the TOS episodes "The Cage" and "The Menagerie." However, from a contemporary point of view, you could view Strange New Worlds as a direct spin-off of Discovery Season 2.

Who are the showrunners of Strange New Worlds ?

Strange New Worlds will be produced by Alex Kurtzman and Akiva Goldsman . At least one episode, probably the premiere episode, will be written by Jenny Lumet. As of 2021, Akiva Goldsman is the co-showrunner of Strange New Worlds along with Henry Alonso Myers. Kirsten Beyer also has revealed that she will be part of the writers’ room in Season 2.

We don't know all the directors of Strange New Worlds episodes, but Will Riker himself , Jonathan Frakes, has already said he can't wait to work with the cast:

"I’ve had great experiences with all three of them. Anson and I worked through finding Captain Pike. And Ethan and I worked through finding who Spock was. And the mantle of Spock, in particular, was so complicated and so emotionally taxing and was such huge shoes to fill, and Ethan felt it. Rebecca and I have a long relationship from back on The Librarians , and we have a fabulous working shorthand, so it will be great getting back to the floor with three old friends."

In addition to directing two Trek films in the '90s ( First Contact and Insurrection ) Frakes directed episodes of The Next Generation , Deep Space Nine , Voyager, Discovery, and Picard . He has also directed at least two episodes of Discovery Season 3.

Akiva Goldsman also confirmed he has directed the pilot episode of Strange New Worlds . Previously, he directed the season 1 finale of Star Trek: Picard .

How many episodes will be in Strange New Worlds Season 1?

Strange New Worlds Season 1 will run for 10 episodes.

How is Strange New World s different from other new Star Trek shows?

One of the biggest departures for Strange New Worlds will actually be a return of sorts. Since 2017, the various new Trek series have focused on heavily serialized seasons in which each episode must be watched in order to avoid being totally confused. Strange New Worlds is poised to return to stand-alone, episodic stories, a type of sci-fi storytelling that defined The Original Series and The Next Generation .

"We're going to try to harken back to some classical Trek values, to be optimistic, and to be more episodic," Akiva Goldsman told Variety in May 2020. "Our plots will be more closed-ended than you’ve seen in either Discovery or Picard . I imagine it to be closer to the original series than even DS9 . We can really tell closed-ended stories. We can find ourselves in episodes that are tonally of a piece."

Something Goldsman pointed out while on the official Star Trek aftershow, The Ready Room , was that the subgenres of Discovery and Picard were somewhat fixed, while TOS and TNG could hop genres week-to-week. Goldsman labeled Discovery as "science fiction/action-adventure" and Picard as "science fiction/drama." Some episodes of TOS and TNG are outright comedies("Trouble With Tribbles," or "Q-Pid"), while others are murder mysteries with barely any science fiction elements at all ("The Conscience of the King," or "Suspicions").

This is all to say that modern Trek seasons scan more like 10-15 hour long single episodes, whereas Strange New Worlds will focus more on self-contained episodes.

In April 2021, Goldsman doubled down on the episodic, stand-alone aspect of Strange New Worlds telling the Hollywood Reporter : “It's unlike the other [new] shows in that it's really episodic... Strange New Worlds is very much adventure-of-the-week but with serialized character arcs.”

Where can I watch Strange New Worlds ?

Strange New Worlds will stream on Parmount+ in the United States, on Crave in Canada, with a global rollout to be announced.

Paramount has debuted the first trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , the latest Star Trek series that’s centered on the USS Enterprise (the first time that a show has returned full-time to the iconic ship since Star Trek: Enterprise ended in 2005.

Strange New Worlds is technically both a spinoff and a prequel, picking up with the crew of the USS Enterprise after their appearance in Star Trek: Discovery ’s second season, making it also a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series (given that the show is set about a decade before Kirk takes over as captain).

As such, the crew of the Enterprise is a mix of familiar and new names for fans. The ship is helmed by Captain Pike (Anson Mount), with Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley, his first officer. Ethan Peck’s Spock is there, but as science officer, as is a Nyota Uhura, who’s still a cadet at this point (played by Celia Rose Gooding).

A more old-fashioned kind of Star Trek show

The trailer seems more set on establishing the overall vibe of the show, which seems pitched at trying to recapture the more episodic, exploratory style of earlier Trek series (as opposed to the more serialized nature of recent shows like Discovery or Picard ). The nostalgia factor runs strong throughout, too, with a voiceover waxing rhapsodic about the wonder of space travel and the stirring sounds of the original Star Trek theme playing in the background.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is just one of many pieces of Paramount’s resurgent Star Trek franchise on its Paramount Plus streaming service, alongside Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Star Trek: Prodigy .

In the ever-innovating landscape of television, what was old is suddenly new again.

Netflix is contemplating a subscription option with commercials. Hulu broke out of the small-batch programming rut by renewing a sitcom for a whopping 20-episode season. And, after a string of spinoffs characterized by gritty darkness or twisty mythologizing, Paramount+ may have cracked the Star Trek code with a new series that’s bright, optimistic and fundamentally episodic in nature.

I actually kinda liked both Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard . Both have ideas that interest me and performances I’m happy to support. But they’re both shows that, once I fell a little behind, I never felt any desire to catch up on.

I can’t say if Trek: Strange New Worlds is a series I’m going to want to pay close attention to every week, but that feels almost like what the new series is designed for. Through the five episodes sent to critics — half of the 10-episode first season — there are installments that hit and others that are completely forgettable. But the series has successfully and quickly established a small ensemble that’s easy to care about and a hopeful ethos that harkens back to the original Star Tre k series and the more procedural aspects of various popular spinoffs. It’s an amiable and entertaining throwback by intent and in execution.

Although the core ensemble of Strange New Worlds , created by Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet, was introduced in the second season of Discovery , those episodes border on completely unnecessary when it comes to what is, on its most basic level, Star Trek: Muppet Babies .

A prequel to Gene Roddenberry’s mothership, Strange New Worlds puts us back on the slightly shinier, slightly newer USS Enterprise under the watch of Captain Christopher Pike ( Anson Mount ), Captain Kirk’s predecessor, suggesting Starfleet used to make leadership decisions primarily on bone structure. Pike is still a bit haunted from the Discovery incident in which he saw the cause and context of his death, 10 years in the future.

Carrying over from those Discovery episodes are Pike’s second-in-command Una “Number One” Chin-Riley ( Rebecca Romijn ) and Baby Spock (Ethan Peck), who make up the key leadership trust on the Enterprise, which is sent on deceptively simple exploratory missions to seek out new life and new civilizations — and to, as the new-fangled phrasing puts it, “boldly go where no one has gone before.” Their crew includes variably familiar future faces including Baby Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), a fresh-out-of-the-Academy communications prodigy, Baby Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush), security officer La’an Noonien Singh (Christina Chong), whose last name points to a distant relation to iconic franchise villain Khan, and more.

If you keep your ears open, you’ll hear mentions of many additional names and alien races from various pieces of the Star Trek universe, but the degree to which you want to obsess over connections is up to you. Strange New Worlds is, in the original series tradition, an encounter-of-the-week narrative as the crew learns about different alien cultures, some benign and some hostile, some with very, very direct allegorical connections to human life in 2022 and some just lizard creatures that want to eat us.

Each of the five episodes I’ve seen is different from the others, while also evocative enough of some of the most repeated structural tropes from the franchise that the Star Trek show this one often most closely resembles is the animated Lower Decks , which lovingly parodies those tropes. So there’s one of those episodes in which an alien infection runs rampant on the Enterprise and makes everybody behave strangely; several episodes in which different landing parties are isolated from the Enterprise and have to learn valuable lessons about not making assumptions; and at least one action-driven episode with a fearsome alien foe that’s mostly pew-pew-pew space blasting and laying the foundation for future antagonistic run-ins. And then there’s a wacky body-swap episode!

Perhaps because the effects work on Strange New Worlds is only average, I wasn’t blown away by any of the episodes that involved somewhat weightless ships and objects flying around in space blasting at each other. Meanwhile, anything depicting character trauma felt flat and prestige-by-the-numbers. But when Strange New World keeps things light — a description that doesn’t preclude plots set among warring races or potentially planet-ending cataclysms — the series is a pleasure and makes up for any CGI limitations with top-notch makeup, costuming and production design.

The cast is across-the-board sturdy, led capably by Mount’s Ken Doll-with-snark attitude. Romijn isn’t all that interesting in dramatic mode, but any time she gets to show a dose of levity, Number One works well. Although Spock’s droll exercises in logic have now been played indelibly by multiple actors over the years, Peck’s interpretation is a worthy one, and he’s especially good in the episodes featuring Vulcan love interest T’Pring (Gia Sandhu).

My favorite performances came from Chong, Gooding, Bush and Melissa Navia as Enterprise helmsman Erica Ortegas. Chong has a dark intensity that plays well whether the context is dramatic or comic, and her scenes with Romijn in the fifth episode are standouts. Bush has a wide-eyed openness and Navia something more wryly sardonic, and the contrast works well. And Gooding is just a general delight, funny and emotionally available, honoring the Nichelle Nichols original and making Uhura her own.

Pervasively progressive, but not so progressive as to alienate that portion of the Star Trek audience in denial that the franchise was always progressive, Strange New Worlds may aim for something less ambitious than the most recent Star Trek shows, but it’s also more successful. In a streaming universe, it’s a broadcast-friendly Star Trek , with a not-unwelcome emphasis on “broad.”

March 28, 2023 – Paramount+ today announced new seasons of its hit original series STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS and STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS will premiere globally this summer. In addition, Paramount+ announced that both series have been renewed for additional seasons: STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS for a 10-episode third season and STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS for a 10-episode fifth season.

Season two of the original drama series STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS will premiere Thursday, June 15 on Paramount+ in the U.S, the U.K., Australia, Latin America, Brazil, France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. New episodes of the 10-episode season will be available to stream weekly on Thursdays. The second season will also be available to stream on Paramount+ in South Korea, with premiere dates to be announced at a later date.

Season four of the original animated comedy series STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS will premiere in late summer on Paramount+ in the U.S., with the exact date to be announced. International premiere dates will be also announced at a later date.

Fans will be treated to even more new animated “Star Trek” as the critically acclaimed original animated kids’ series STAR TREK: PRODIGY will return with season two this winter. The Children’s and Family Emmy Award-winning series is from Nickelodeon and CBS Studios’ Eye Animation Productions.

As previously announced, the fifth and final season of STAR TREK: DISCOVERY will premiere in early 2024.

Season two of STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS includes the previously announced special crossover episode featuring both live-action and animation, and STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS’ Tawny Newsome as Ensign Beckett Mariner and Jack Quaid as Ensign Brad Boimler joining the U.S.S. Enterprise. The episode was directed by “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and STAR TREK: PICARD actor and director Jonathan Frakes.

New Star Trek shows: every future series, from Strange New Worlds to Lower Decks

From Lower Decks to Strange New Worlds, what's coming up?

It's a rich time for new Star Trek content, with streaming service CBS All Access building much of its content strategy around expanding the sci-fi franchise. If you're outside of the US, too, it's been pretty easy to keep up with it all, since Picard has released internationally on Amazon Prime Video, while Netflix has the rights to Discovery.

In April 2019, overseer Alex Kurtzman told THR that "The idea is to always have something" Star Trek-related on TV. "Two years from now, a show will end, there will be a little breath and then another show will begin."

While that ambitious plan for 2021 might be slowed down by this year's coronavirus-based TV production headaches, there's no doubt that CBS has enough content in the pipeline to back that up.  Seven Star Trek shows are publicly known right now, though a couple don't have titles or even a premise yet, and this includes ongoing seasons of Picard and Discovery.

Do Star Trek fans like the shows being made? As with any franchise that has a long and complicated history, it's really hard to figure out what the consensus is on Trek as it stands. But the volume and tonal range of what's in the works surely has to excite an audience that once enjoyed 18 years of unbroken Trek shows.

We expect to learn a lot more about these series when Star Trek takes over a whole series of panels at Comic Con at Home, starting on July 23.

Star Trek: Lower Decks

Release date: August 6

Getting Rick and Morty writer Mike McMahan was quite a win for this first adult animated Star Trek series, which takes place on the lower decks of the Cerritos, a less important Starfleet vessel. It's the first Star Trek animated series in decades, and features a pretty big name voice cast, including The Boys ' Jack Quaid. 

McMahan wrote one of the all-time best Rick and Morty episodes, Total Rickall, and co-created the recent Hulu series Solar Opposities, so hopefully the end result here will be good. Two seasons are on the way.

We're not sure where it'll be streaming outside of the US yet, though.

Star Trek Discovery season 3

Expected release date: late 2020

A third season of CBS All Access' flagship show Star Trek: Discovery finished filming a while back, and post-production has been ongoing. We're expecting this one to debut some time after Lower Decks has finished rolling out its 10 weekly episodes. 

Star Trek: Discovery season 3 has a killer hook, taking viewers 1,000 years into the future of the Star Trek timeline, which will presumably give the writers a lot of scope to tell big stories without any lore-based restrictions. 

Season 2 spent a little too long in the shadow of legacy characters, as well-acted as they were, so hopefully this season will shift focus back to the Discovery's own extremely likeable crew. 

Star Trek: Picard season 2

Expected release date: 2021

Star Trek: Picard season 2 is officially happening, but where the story will go is something of a mystery after the series' eventful finale, as Picard survived (sort of) the Romulans' attack on the synthetic world of Coppelius. In season 2, expect the show to deal with the fact that (spoiler alert!) Picard now has a synthetic body, as he found a way to cheat death. We're expecting more TNG cameos in season 2, after season 1 gave fans all-too-brief glimpses of Riker and Troi. We also know Whoopi Goldberg will be reprising her role as Guinan from that series. 

Our hope is that the writers will focus on making the crew of newer characters on the La Sirena a little easier to like; Star Trek: Picard doesn't yet have the complete-feeling ensemble that Discovery does, and that's a challenge they need to overcome. 

Filming on Picard season 2 was meant to happen this June, but has been delayed for obvious reasons. We still expect to see it next year at some point, though.

Section 31 (working title)

The most intriguing spin-off in this list, and reportedly the next one in line for filming after Discovery season 3. Michelle Yeoh will reprise her memorable role as the Mirror Universe's version of Philippa Georgiou, who joined the titular mysterious Federation organization in Discovery. Section 31 operates autonomously in protection of the Federation, and is commonly known as an extreme group that works for what it perceives as the greater good. This should show a side of the Star Trek universe we haven't seen yet.

Reports suggested Section 31 was supposed to film in May of this year, but naturally that's bound to be impacted by the current global health crisis. 

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Expected release date: 2021 (or later)

Star Trek Discovery season 2's versions of Captain Pike, Spock and Number One were evidently popular enough that they're getting their own spin-off. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds features Anson Mount, Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn reprising their roles in what's been described as a 'classic' Star Trek series with an angle of optimism, which should sit nicely alongside the more densely serialized likes of Discovery and Picard. As a more direct prequel to the Original Series, it'll be about the crew of the Enterprise in the pre-Kirk days.

Expected release date: 2022

Star Trek has so far lacked a counterpart to Star Wars ' Rebels and The Clone Wars animated series, but that's set to change. A so-far untitled Star Trek CG TV series is coming to Nickelodeon in the US, and as of July 2019, it had a writers' team in place. Dan and Kevin Hageman, who worked on the excellent Netflix series Trollhunters, are the key creatives behind the show, suggesting that something of a high quality that doesn't talk down to its audience is in the works here. 

Little is known about the show, but it will have serialized storylines, and Kurtzman has suggested we might not even see it in action until after 2021. Like Lower Decks, two seasons of it have been ordered, which is partly motivated by the long lead times needed on animated series.

Untitled live-action show (possibly Star Trek: Starfleet Academy)

Back in January, series overseer Alex Kurtzman explained (as captured by Trek Core ) that two more live-action Star Trek series were yet to be revealed. 

With Strange New Worlds' later announcement, we found out about one, but what about the other? It remains a mystery, but a younger-focused series called Starfleet Academy was reportedly in the works back in 2018, from the Gossip Girl duo of Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. An old Variety report about Kurtzman's work on Trek also suggested it was possible a series about the antagonist Khan Noonien Singh was also in the works.

We'll just have to wait and see on this last one. It might even be a different project we haven't heard about yet.

One thing's for sure, though: you'll get all the Star Trek you can handle over the next couple of years.

CBS All Access today announced a series order for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , based on the years Captain Christopher Pike manned the helm of the U.S.S. Enterprise. The series will feature fan favorites from season two of Star Trek: Discovery , Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, Rebecca Romijn as Number One and Ethan Peck as Science Officer Spock. The series will follow Captain Pike, Science Officer Spock and Number One in the decade before Captain Kirk boarded the U.S.S. Enterprise , as they explore new worlds around the galaxy.

A Special Message for Star Trek Fans

The series premiere was written by Akiva Goldsman with the story by Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet. Goldsman, Kurtzman and Lumet will serve as executive producers in addition to Henry Alonso Myers, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth. Aaron Baiers, Akela Cooper and Davy Perez will serve as co-executive producers. Akiva Goldsman will remain an executive producer and a key part of the creative team on Star Trek: Picard as well. The series will be produced by CBS Television Studios, Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.

Star Trek has a big 2024 on tap, and here are 8 things to look forward to from the final frontier this year. Although the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes halted Hollywood production and the ability of talent and creatives to promote their work for much of 2023, Star Trek had a phenomenal year. Star Trek: Picard season 3, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, and Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4 released a cumulative 30 episodes, were highly acclaimed as some of the most innovative Star Trek in years, and many episodes charted in the Nielsen streaming Top 10. All in all, 2023 was a great year to be a Star Trek fan.

Significant questions loom over Star Trek in 2024, however. Paramount may be up for sale, which would certainly impact Star Trek on Paramount+'s various series and projects. There remains no new Star Trek theatrical movie in development, going on 8 years since Star Trek Beyond hit theaters in the summer of 2016. Held at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles and streamed on Paramount+ and Star Trek 's social channels, Star Trek Day is expected to return in September 2024, with a likely agenda of honoring the departing Star Trek: Discovery and looking ahead to Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 and more.

5 Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Announcements

Expect information about the newest star trek series.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy was announced by Paramount+ in April 2023, and nothing more is known about the newest upcoming Star Trek series besides the fact that Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau ( Nancy Drew ) are the showrunners, and the writers' room includes Tawny Newsome of Star Trek: Lower Decks . 2024 should finally see more information about Starfleet Academy, which will hopefully announce the actors/characters of the show, and perhaps even confirm that Starfleet Academy is set after Star Trek: Discovery season 5 , as expected.

4 Star Trek: Section 31

Star trek's first made-for-streaming movie..

Announced in April 2023, Star Trek: Section 31 finally begins production from January to March in Toronto for a possible release in late 2024. Section 31 stars Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh , who reprises her Star Trek: Discovery anti-hero, Emperor Michelle Georgiou, and Yeoh used her clout from her Best Actress Oscar to ensure Section 31 is made. Star Trek: Section 31 is directed by Olutande Osunsanmi and written by Craig Sweeny, but nothing else is known about the first Star Trek movie made exclusively to stream on Paramount+ . Section 31 's potential success could lead to the plan for a new Star Trek streaming movie every 2 years to come to fruition. Even if Star Trek: Section 31 doesn't premiere in 2024, fans should at least finally learn what other characters are in the movie and what era of Star Trek Section 31 is set in.

3 Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5

Premieres in 2024 on paramount+..

Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4 may have been the animated comedy's best season yet, and hopes are high that Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 will top it. The SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes didn't affect the production of the animated series, and Star Trek: Lower Decks was able to complete its scripts, with 10 new episodes in production for the show's traditional late summer/early fall release date on Paramount+. Little is known about the stories planned for Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 and the newly-minuted junior Lieutenants of the USS Cerritos, except that there will be more exploration of the Orion culture through the eyes of former Lt. D'Vana Tendi (Noel Wells). And while there are fears that season 5 could be the last for Star Trek: Lower Decks, hopefully, the 2023 crossover with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds created more fans of Lower Decks, and creator Mike McMahan's hilarious animated show can continue for years to come.

The only live-action Star Trek series on Paramount+'s 2024 schedule, Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is the final season marking the end of the voyages of Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery. It was Star Trek: Discovery' s success on CBS All-Access, which became Paramount+, that led to Star Trek 's current TV renaissance. Although Discovery season 5 was not originally planned as the final season, following Paramount+ canceling the series in March 2023, reshoots were completed to turn Discovery 's season 5 finale into a proper ending for the entire series . Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is also a shift in tone to an Indiana Jones -like intergalactic treasure hunt adventure, according to Jonathan Frakes, who directs the penultimate episode of Discovery . Original ‘Star Trek’ Enterprise Model Is Found After Being Missing for Decades

The 33-inch model surfaced on eBay after disappearing around 1979. An auction house is giving it to the son of Gene Roddenberry, the creator of “Star Trek.”

The first model of the U.S.S. Enterprise, the starship that appeared in the opening credits of the original “Star Trek” television series , has been returned to Eugene Roddenberry Jr., the son of the creator of the series, decades after it went missing.

“After a long journey, she’s home,” Mr. Roddenberry wrote on social media on Thursday.

For die-hard Trekkies, the model’s disappearance had become the subject of folklore, so an eBay listing last fall, with a starting bid of $1,000, didn’t go unnoticed.

“Red alert,” someone in an online costume and prop-making forum wrote, linking to the listing.

Mr. Roddenberry’s father, Gene Roddenberry, created the television series, which first aired in 1966 and ran for three seasons. It spawned numerous spinoffs, several films and a franchise that has included conventions and legions of devoted fans with an avid interest in memorabilia.

The seller of the model was bombarded with inquiries and quickly took the listing down.

The seller contacted Heritage Auctions to authenticate it, the auction house’s executive vice president, Joe Maddalena, said on Saturday. As soon as the seller, who said he had found it in a storage unit, brought it to the auction house’s office in Beverly Hills, Calif., Mr. Maddalena said he knew it was real.

“That’s when I reached out to Rod to say, ‘We’ve got this. This is it,’” he said, adding that the model was being transferred to Mr. Roddenberry.

Mr. Roddenberry, who is known as Rod, said on Saturday that he would restore the model and seek to have it displayed in a museum or other institution. He said reclaiming the item had only piqued his interest in the circumstances about its disappearance.

“Whoever borrowed it or misplaced it or lost it, something happened somewhere,” he said. “Where’s it been?”

It was unclear how the model ended up in the storage unit and who had it before its discovery.

The original U.S.S. Enterprise, a 33-inch model, was mostly made of solid wood by Richard C. Datin, a model maker for the Howard Anderson Company, a special-effects company that created the opening credits for some of the 20th century’s biggest TV shows .

An enlarged 11-foot model was used in subsequent “Star Trek” television episodes, and is now part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum , where it was donated by Paramount Studios in 1974.

Mr. Roddenberry, who said he gave the seller a “reward” for its recovery but did not disclose the terms, assembled a group of “Star Trek” production veterans, model makers and restoration specialists in Beverly Hills to authenticate the find.

The group included a “Star Trek” art supervisor, Michael Okuda, and his wife, Denise, an artist on “Star Trek” television series and films, and Gary Kerr, a “Trek x-pert” who served as technical consultant for the Smithsonian during a 2016 restoration of the 11-foot model.

“We spent at least an hour photographing it, inspecting the paint, inspecting the dirt, looking under the base, the patina on the stem, the grain in the wood,” Mr. Roddenberry said.

“It was a unanimous ‘This is 100 percent the one,’” he said.

Gene Roddenberry, who died in 1991 , kept the original model, which appeared in the show’s opening credits and pilot episode, on his desk.

Mr. Kerr compared the model to 1960s photos he had of the model on Mr. Roddenberry’s desk.

“The wood grain matched exactly, so that was it,” he said on Saturday.

The model went missing after Mr. Roddenberry lent it to the makers of “Star Trek: The Motion Picture,” which was released in 1979, Mr. Maddalena said.

“This is a major discovery,” he said, likening the model to the ruby slippers from “The Wizard of Oz,” a prop that was stolen in 2005 and recovered by the F.B.I. in 2018, and that Heritage Auctions is selling.

While the slippers represent hope, he said, the starship Enterprise model “represents dreams.”

“It’s a portal to what could be,” he said.

Star Trek: Discovery star Sonequa Martin-Green on filming final season ‘we didn’t know would be our last’

Star Trek: Discovery star Sonequa Martin-Green has opened up on filming the final season of the TV series, which the cast originally ‘didn’t know’ would be the last.

Later this month, the beloved sci-fi show – which first premiered seven years ago in 2017 – is set to come to an end with season five.

The programme began by introducing Trekkies around the world to Michael Burnham (Sonequa), an officer who is recruited onto the USS Discovery as a science expert after being sentenced to life in prison for committing mutiny.

Michael has been on an incredible journey since then, and the actress who plays the iconic character was clearly emotional to be saying goodbye to the programme when Metro.co.uk caught up with her.

Sonequa, 39, explained that any time she speaks directly to Star Trek fans about how much their support has meant to her, ‘it tends to get emotional’.

‘There’s just nothing but gratitude and love,’ she said, as recalled how viewers ‘gave us a chance and let us into their hearts’.

Several episodes of Star Trek: Discovery season five have already been released on Paramount Plus , ahead of the eventual finale.

So how does Sonequa think that fans are going to feel when they finally discover how the series has been wrapped up?

‘I wish I could say how it’s going to wrap up. I can’t other than saying how I hope they feel from seeing it, because we ask the biggest questions that you can possibly ask in season five,’ the former Walking Dead star answered.

‘It’s also got this bit of a tonal shift, it’s more fun and adventurous. But the questions that we ask, it just goes as deep as it can.’

Sonequa reflected on what it was like to return to Canada so that she and other members of the cast and crew could give Star Trek: Discovery the send-off it deserves.

‘I think that when Paramount Plus and CBS allowed us to go back to Toronto to actually wrap up the season and the series – because we didn’t know it was our last when we were shooting it – I think we were able to wrap it up in a beautiful way and I think people will be satisfied and I think they’ll feel hopeful from how it ends,’ she stated.

In March last year, it was confirmed that season five would be the last for Star Trek: Discovery, despite it previously being suspected that it would continue for a sixth outing.

At the time, Sonequa said that it was a ‘lot to process’ the imminent conclusion.

‘It’s been a roller-coaster of emotions and I haven’t even spoken about it publicly yet because it’s a lot to process. It’s a lot to process, but I am overwhelmed with gratitude,’ she told ET .

Explaining that she felt ‘overwhelmed’, she added: ‘We’re sending all these messages of love and nostalgic texts back and forth to each other because it’s a lot. It’s a lot to feel right now. I’m very grateful.’

As Star Trek fans will know, characters have a tendency of returning or taking part in unexpected crossovers… so who knows where the cast of Discovery will venture next.

Star Trek: Discovery is available to watch on Paramount Plus, with new episodes of the final season released on Thursdays.

Could a series similar to Star Trek: Enterprise be successful today?

N ext year, it will be twenty years since Star Trek: Enterprise was cancelled, but the current availability of the series on Paramount+ has garnered new interest and new fans. Though it only lasted for four seasons, Enterprise is, to some fans, one of their favorite series. And there is much to love about it if you take out the theme song and the fact that Star Trek was left off the title for two seasons. Those are minor issues that have little to do with the success of the series.

According to Collider , Star Trek: Enterprise was "doomed to fail from the start" and "faced its own Kobayashi Maru." And there were a lot of issues that challenged the series, no doubt. The network, UPN, for one, wasn't the biggest network and didn't have the clout to put behind a Star Trek series. Yes, there were problems with the first and second season episodes, but virtually all of Star Trek has had bumpy episodes, especially Star Trek: The Next Generation during its first and second seasons as well.

But now, with the availability of streaming and the opportunity to take more risks, could a series much like Enterprise, an origin series that goes back further in time than Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, be successful? To basically start from scratch, not as a reboot, but a new series that explores the universe before the Enterprise got all the bells and whistles, before there was as much technology as there is now. Could that work?

Removing much of the higher-end production costs would certainly be beneficial for Paramount+, but would fans be satisifed with a stripped-down version of Star Trek? I think it's worth a shot. Why? Because Paramount+ is struggling financially, but the executives know fans still want Star Trek. And in the 1990s and 2000s, we were happy with what the creatives were able to do with the series. Yes, we've been spoiled to a certain extent, but we still enjoy the character arcs of the series. So maybe scaling back, not to the point of Star Trek: The Original Series, but to a more simpler Trek would work.

It costs a lot of money to produce a Star Trek series, but one that's not as technologically-advanced as Star Trek: Discovery could put the focus on more character-building than world-building. We've seen what Star Trek can do, but what would it be capable of without millions of dollars per episode? Sometimes, less is more, and that just might work for some of us who are missing the old-school Trek.

And if you haven't had the pleasure of seeing the completely adorable Baby Yoda (aka Grogu), now's the time to catch up with the first three seasons of the Disney+ Western-flavored series " The Mandalorian " – starring Pedro Pascal as the armored title gunslinger. If the impending premiere of "The Acolyte" and news of upcoming movies haven't been exciting enough, the rash of recent comic books and novels – most of them pretty rad – have fleshed out stories not seen in the movies.

The flagship "Star Wars" comic is currently filling in the time between "Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi" as Luke comes to grips with Darth Vader being his dad. (Forty-year-old spoiler alert!) The recent "Dark Droids" crossover limited series put a horror spin on the usual galactic adventures. Comixology has a great digital sale going on to get newer comics and older series for cheap, and May 4 is also Free Comic Book Day this year, which you means you can grab an issue of "Star Wars" gratis at participating comic book shops on Saturday.

Book lovers wanting to take a trip in the wayback machine can check out the epic "The High Republic" saga, set 200 years before the events of the movies: Young-adult tale "Defy the Storm" is the latest of those chapters to come out. Those whose tastes veer more cinematic will appreciate the  "Alphabet Squadron"  trilogy, which follows a group of New Republic pilots hunting a mysterious TIE Fighter group exacting revenge after the fall of the Empire (see: "Return of the Jedi").

Say 'Punch it, Chewie!' to some kid activities

StarWa r s.com offers a whole slew of things  for crafty moms and dads to do with their children. Make a Baby Yoda pencil pouch, a Hoth snowglobe or a Death Star piñata, and print out various coloring sheets and word searches.

Buy something fun and extremely nerdy

Lots of places discount their Star Wars merch and/or release exclusives on May 4, and StarWars.com has a roundup of all the coolest stuff, from galactic pennants and R2-D2 luggage to Yoda bottles and Death Star rings. If you've got time on your hands (and sufficient shelf space in your house), Lego celebrates its 25th year collaborating with "Star Wars" by debuting a large collector's series version of the TIE Interceptor with a cute little TIE Pilot minifigure and his mouse droid, so you and your family can build to your heart's delight.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch Series Finale Ending Explained 

The Star Wars: The Bad Batch series finale leaves some big questions out there for fans to ponder. Here's how it all goes down.

This article contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 3 episode 15.

After a rollercoaster journey of three seasons and 47 episodes, Star Wars: The Bad Batch has finally come to an end. The beloved Clone Force 99 have hung up their helmets in an epic 50-minute finale that rounds off their stories while also setting up the future of the galaxy far, far away. Things come to a head in the aptly named “The Cavalry Has Arrived,” which serves as an emotional swansong for our titular troupe of outcast clones. 

The Zillo Beasts Returns and Tech Doesn’t

All roads lead to Mount Tantiss, and following last week’s cliffhanger ending, Crosshair, Hunter, and Wrecker (all voiced by Dee Bradley Baker) launch a rescue mission alongside former Imperial Vice Admiral Rampart (Noshir Dalal). Meanwhile, Echo (Baker) finds himself inside the base and working with Dr. Emerie Karr (Keisha Castle-Hughes), who’s had a change of heart.

Everything ties back to Project Necromancer, which is the Empire’s plan to clone Emperor Sheev Palpatine ahead of his impending death in Return of the Jedi . At the core of this is Omega (Michelle Ang), who is planning her own daring escape from Tantiss’ vault with the other M-count rich test subjects. It doesn’t set them up for their own spinoff, but we can imagine a more mature Young Jedi Adventures .

Going full Jurassic Park , Omega and her crew of escapees free the giant Zillo Beast, making its welcome return from Star Wars: The Clone Wars and earlier in The Bad Batch . Although the Zillo Beast runs amok on Tantiss Base, we were wrong that villainous Dr. Hemlock (Jimmi Simpson) would meet his maker at its jaws. 

Hunter, Wrecker, and Crosshair are detained by Hemlock, who prepares the Bad Batch for reconditioning. While we know this didn’t work on Crosshair, Hemlock activating his CX assassins makes it clear that not all the clones were as lucky. Unfortunately, after weeks of speculation that CX-2 was a brainwashed version of their fallen brother, there was no shocking reveal that the clone assassin is actually Tech. Instead, Hunter easily dispatches CX-2 with a spear to the chest. 

Speaking of underwhelming farewells, there’s plenty of fan fury that Delta Squad’s Scorch was gunned down like a common droid. These aren’t the only deaths, and when the seemingly reformed Rampart betrays our heroes to get back in good with the Empire, Nala Se (Gwendoline Yeo) takes him out in a fiery sacrifice.

With the Empire’s forces dwindling, Hemlock tries to escape with Omega but is stopped by Hunter and Crosshair in a final showdown. Despite Crosshair’s shakes, he takes out Hemlock in a hail of bullets. The Project Necromancer research is destroyed, and so is the Emperor’s knowledge of how important Omega could be to his cause…for now. 

Things end with a last-minute cameo from Governor Tarkin (Stephen Stanton), who says that Hemlock has already wasted enough of the Empire’s money. The Necromancer funding is redistributed to Project Stardust, which, following Andor ’s post-credit scene , is the second recent Star Wars series to mention the construction of the Death Star. 

Where Does The Bad Batch Leave the Team? 

Despite some ominous opening titles, the remaining members of the Bad Batch scrape through with their lives and seemingly get one of those rare happy endings in Star Wars . The team regroups on Pabu and looks toward a brighter future.

Echo and Emerie are off to Pantora to help Senator Chuchi settle the former clones into their new lives while Omega and the rest of the Tantiss kids make a new home on Pabu. With Crosshair, Hunter, and Wrecker staying here while Echo dashes off on another adventure, it’s sad to see the Bad Batch split once again 

Then again, after waving goodbye to Tech in the season 2 finale, Crosshair’s finale musings that Clone Force 99 died with him ring true. There’s an emotional mention of the group being able to choose their own path, leading to a skip into the future around 20 years after the Bad Batch parted ways. It’s here that we catch up with a much older Omega and Hunter by the Marauder 2.0. 

The end of The Bad Batch ties neatly into the original trilogy, with Omerga wanting to fight for the Rebel Alliance as a hotshot pilot. As Omega flies off into the distance with Gonky, Tech’s smashed glasses make one last appearance before the final credits roll. It shows just how far the little clone has come and what she’s learned from her brothers. 

Will There Be a Bad Batch Season 4 or Another Spinoff?

Despite there being no word on an official Bad Batch continuation or any rumbles of another animated series being in the works, there are more opportunities here than clones themselves. In particular, it feels like Echo’s arc is leading toward a clone uprising series that could bring in Captain Rex and pick up with the fan-favorite Domino Squad.

As for Omega, her lack of appearances beyond this point in the timeline had many worried The Bad Batch finale was going to go full Rogue One and kill them all. Given Omega’s ambitions to join the Rebel Alliance, we’re guessing she’ll appear further down the line in either animated or live-action form, and much like Rebels ’ Ghost appearing in Episode IX , Omega might’ve been with us this entire time. 

We know Project Necromancer will eventually pick up steam in the New Republic timeline of The Mandalorian season 3, but with this coming after the destruction of both Death Stars and the deaths of Tarkin and Palpatine, it’s over to the Shadow Council and Commandant Brendol Hux (Brian Gleeson) to revisit it much further down the line. 

There are just too many tantalizing plot threads to leave the story here, although what form the Bad Batch continues in remains unclear. We’re still no closer to finding out whether that’s Captain Rex in Return of the Jedi , there’s no last-minute appearance of Asajj Ventress to cue her franchise future, and there’s now a rogue Zillo Beast out there in the stars. Still, The Bad Batch ends on a poignant high that finally lets those ‘defective’ clones enjoy a well-earned break.
