Garda by Bike - Ciclovia del Garda around Lake Garda

  • From Peschiera to Mantova
  • On the wine route
  • Valle dei Laghi
  • Valle delle Cartiere

By 2026, the completion of a 140 km cycle path Ciclovia del Garda around Lake Garda is planned. For the ambitious project Garda by Bike, partially existing bike paths will be used and additionally new tracks will be built.

The circumnavigation of Lake Garda on one continuous bike path is the realisation of a bikers dream, and it's getting closer.

On July 14, 2018, a particularly beautiful section was opened. An approximately 2 km bike path leads from Capo Reamol in Limone sul Garda   on the west coast in north direction. It is partly built close to rugged cliffs and also above the water and therefore gives fantastic views. However, it does not already reach Riva del Garda .

The new bike path is wide and suitable for families as there are no steep climbs and the bridge sections are well secured. The bike path is paved with planks of wood and is comfortable for all types of bikes . It impresses not only cyclists but also pedestrians with scenic beauty, and architectural elegance. Athletes and nature lovers can look forward to a new holiday highlight at Lake Garda .

The Garda by Bike project involves the regions of Lombardy and Veneto, as well as the province of Trento. Links to European cycle routes such as Eurovelo Route 7 and Eurovelo Route 8 are also planned.

Tour del Lago di Garda (clockwise)

Logo Garda Trentino

Hi, I would like to ask how much of the path is strictly ...

A fantastic loop that runs round the entire perimeter of Lake Garda. The distance, which exceeds 140 kilometres, makes this itinerary suitable for the fittest cyclists.

Another "classic" for all the fans of the Upper Garda area who want to make the most of the mild climate of the lakeside area in wintertime. This route enables you to circumnavigate the largest lake in Europe, and to discover all the aspects of its beauty. Given the enormity of the lake, the distance is quite considerable, making this itinerary unsuitable for untrained cyclists.

From a technical standpoint, the route does not pose any particular problems. However, it is very hilly. It passes through various tunnels, some of which are very long, especially on the return journey. The use of lights and a high-visibility jacket are recommended. The loop can be cycled in both directions; however, we recommend departing in the morning when the Paler is blowing southwards, as this helps us along.

Author’s recommendation

These roads are often used by professional cyclists as training routes. While you’re pedalling, keep an eye on who you might meet along the way!

Track types

Safety information.

We remind that headlights and rearlights as well as the use of reflecting suspenders are obligatory in tunnels, even considering that most of these are illuminated.

Give your bike a regular checkup, especially if you've had it for years.

Be seen: you must wear a high vis jacket (or sash) in tunnels and on country roads after sunset.

Always wear your helmet.

Make sure your front and rear lights are working.

Put out your arm to give advance warning of your intention to change position and before you do anything, check there are no vehicles coming up behind you.

Don't use headphones or your mobile phone handsfree kit: you need all your concentration on the road!

Obey the road signs: stop at traffic lights and don't ride on the wrong side of the road.

If you are cycling in a group, always go in single file.

You've got a bell: use it to let pedestrians know you're there. Don't ride on footpaths. If you have to then get off and push your bike.

If there are cycle paths use them. It's your safety that's at stake and the rules of the road say you must.

Tips and suggestions

Destination

Turn-by-turn directions.

From Riva del Garda take the cycle path up to Torbole sul Garda, afterwards follow the “Gardesana Orientale (Eastern Gardesana)” road, which flanks the Lake Garda for 10 km,  leading for some stretches into tunnels. Passing from Trentino into the region Veneto you arrive in Malcesine. Carry on always flanking the lake, passing through the characteristic veronese villages of Brenzone, Castelletto, Torri del Benaco, Garda, Bardolino e Lazise. Here do the Pre-Alps end and the Po Valley start: for 40 km you will have to pay attention to the several roundabouts that follow one another.

Continue past Peschiera and proceed to Desenzano entering the province of Brescia. Pass through the centre of town flanking the lake and continue past Padenghe, Moniga and Cunettone. At this roundabout turn right in the direction of Salò. After a panoramic downhill on the gulf, you'll get back onshore of the lake. Pass through Salò and take the “Gardesana Occidentale (Western Gardesana)”. Continue past Gardone and Toscolano Maderno and carry on up to Gargnano. Here starts an uphill road perched over the lake where the first tunnels characterizing the last stretch of the tour start. After a fast downhill you get back flanking Lake Garda passing the crossroad of Campione del Garda, pass through Limone sul Garda up to the starting point of Riva del Garda.

All loop itineraries can be done in both ways.

Book recommendations for this region:

Riding your bike requires specific clothing and equipment, even for relatively short and easy trips. It is always better to be prepared… e.g. for bad weather or a drop your energy levels. The unexpected things also make up a part of the fun!

Do not compare a road bike with a mountain bike. They are very different, especially in technical terms, and facing a hill with a road bike could be much more difficult than facing the same hill with a MTB. Therefore, remember to throughly evaluate the type of route you plan to do and the locations you plan to cross. Do not forget to consider the current season. Has it been raining? Attention: the paint of the crosswalk could be very slick.

What do I need to bring on my bike tour?

  • Bike helmet
  • Bike gloves
  • Bike glasses
  • Waterproof/Windproof jacket
  • Headlights and rearlights
  • Reflecting suspenders
  • Plenty of snacks (for example, dried fruit or energy bars)
  • Water Bottle
  • Bike repair kit (tire levers, mini bike pump, bike tube)

It is always advised to let someone know where you plan to go and how long you expect to be.

The southern foothills of the Alps around Riva del Garda form the epicentre of a series of landscapes that road cyclists can explore in just half a day. To the north, in the area around Comano Terme, the Valle delle Chiese and over the Carlo Magno Pass to the Val di Sole are epic circular routes, each one the equal of the one before – and it's not uncommon to bump into some “gruppetti” touring around Affi, Monte Baldo and the Val Gresta. Endless possibilities!

Map for cycling around Lake Garda

Day 1: Individual arrival in Desenzano / Sirmione

Welcome to Northern Italy! Your bike tour around Lake Garda starts on the south-western shore of Italy's largest lake. After your accommodation, take a walk to the old harbour of Desenzano and visit the remains of the 11th century castle. The town of Sirmione lies on a peninsula jutting into Lake Garda. Here, too, a castle is particularly worth seeing, the Castello Scaligero . You will spend the night in Desenzano or in Sirmione.

Sirmione

Day 2: Desenzano / Sirmione – Garda, approx. 45 km

Along the lakeshore and through the rolling hills of the Lugana wine-growing area (you should definitely try the white wine!) you reach the historic fortress complex of Peschiera. At first you continue cycling along the lake, after a few kilometres some sections in the hinterland. Through apple orchards and past the vineyards of Bardolino, your destination for the day is Garda. The town gave its name to Lake Garda and impresses with historic churches, buildings and squares.

Cyclists at Lake Garda

Cyclists at Lake Garda

Day 3: Garda – Torbole / Riva, approx. 65 km

Treat yourself to a cappuccino on Garda's beautiful lakeside promenade before leaving the town in the direction of the Adige Valley. Accompanied by olive groves and vineyards, you follow the Adige cycle path for quite a while. Not far from the village of Mori you leave the Adige and cycle over the Passo San Giovanni , a mountain pass, to Torbole or Riva. You have reached the northern shore of Lake Garda. Do you still have energy for a few metres of ascent? Visit the ruins of Castel Penede above Torboles. Enjoy a regional wine and the view of Lake Garda at the end of the stage on the piazza in Riva next to the slightly leaning Torre Apponale - the tower is the town's landmark.

Torbole

Day 4: Excursion to the Sarca Valley, approx. 50 km

Today your suitcases will be left behind and you will take an excursion into the valley of the Sarca River on your bike tour around Lake Garda. It is the main tributary of Lake Garda. You follow it into the valley, with a view of the surrounding Garda mountains, as far as Pietramurata. Relax and follow the river back to Lake Garda. On the way, pay a visit to the fortress of Arco. Situated on a prominent rocky hill, today's ruins can be reached via a path lined by olive groves. After enjoying the view, head back to Lake Garda.

Pietramurata

Pietramurata

Day 5: Torbole / Riva – Salò, approx. 65 km + transfer

In the morning, a transfer takes you to Lake Ledro. From the small mountain lake you cycle towards Lake Idro. The picturesque alpine lake will accompany you for a while, during which you can enjoy the magnificent view of the green mountain slopes. On the cycle path through the Val Sabbia, the descent is almost imperceptible. The small town of Salò is your destination for the day. Stroll through the winding alleys and along the lakeside promenade while enjoying a delicious ice cream. Perfetto !

Saló

Day 6: Salò – Desenzano / Sirmione, approx. 40 / 45 km

This section runs through the hilly hinterland dotted with small towns. With Desenzano you reach Lake Garda. Enjoy a dip in the cool water at one of the beaches and rent a pedal boat at the harbour to get to know the lake from a different perspective. In Sirmione, a detour to the Grotte di Catullo is worthwhile. The ruins of a Roman villa from the 1st century will make the heart of anyone interested in history and archaeology beat faster. On the last evening of your bike tour around Lake Garda, toast with one of the wines from the surrounding vineyards.

Cycle break with a view of Riva del Garda

Around Lake Garda

Glistening lakes, green valleys, well-fortified castles

Cycle break with a view of Riva del Garda

It will probably be a few more years before the cycle path around Italy’s largest lake is completed. With us you can already fulfill this dream of cycling around the entire Lake Garda. Ride on the shore, along flower-adorned promenades and let your eyes wander over the wide, sparkling surface of the water. Refresh yourself in the lesser known but no less enchanting Lake Ledro and Lake Idro. The views in the valleys are impressive. Wonderfully designed cycle paths lead you through the fertile Adige valley, the panoramic Valle del Sarca and the romantic Val Sabbia. In addition to the impressive scenery, the region around Lake Garda has also outstanding cuisine to offer. Taste the best olive oil, excellent wines, ripe citrus fruits and tasty freshwater fish on every daily stage of your holiday. So what are you waiting for, all is ready and served for you!

bike tour garda lake

The circular tour starts at the southern part of Lake Garda in Desenzano/Sirmione. You then cycle counter-clockwise around the glistening lake and experience not only the fascination of the water, but also the beautiful regions that surround Lake Garda. Since the surrounding area can also be seen and, above all, tasted. Regional delicacies await you everywhere along the way.

  • Peschiera fortress complex: Already on the second day our cycle tour takes you to a historical highlight, the fortress of Peschiera. It used to be a stone gatehouse in the city wall, today it is a fascinating gateway to the old town. The star-shaped fortess, completely surrounded by water, impresses with its old and romantic charm.
  • Valle del Sarca: One of the largest rivers in the Trentino is the river Sarca. The Valle del Sarca valley of the same name runs north of Lake Garda to the Adamello-Brenta nature park. Our tour also offers you unique views of the valley.
  • The Alpine Lakes: Two other lakes almost steal the show from Lake Garda on this tour, we are talking about Lake Ledro and Lake Idro. Those two alpine lakes feature excellent water quality and are located in the picturesque mountain panorama.

After your arrival in Desenzano/Sirmione, you cycle in just eight days around Lake Garda. However, since there is unfortunately no cycle path that runs directly along the shore, this route often deviates inland. But that is not a disadvantage at all, since it gives you a great insight into the regions that surround Lake Garda.

  • Here you will find all information and further tips for our cycle holidays on Lake Garda .

Lake Garda Travel

THE BEST BIKE TRAILS on Lake Garda

Lake Garda is one of the most interesting destinations for bike tourism : its territory is wide and rich in bike trails that will satisfy any need. In fact, the Lake is surrounded by mountains to the north, by hills and vineyards to the south, and also has many flat stretches, perfect for an afternoon of relaxation.

Here are the best bike trails to enjoy the beautiful landscapes of Lake Garda : the paths are divided according to the region in which they are located and the difficulty.

Come discover the magic of Lake Garda on two wheels!

Bike Trails on western Lake Garda (Lombardy)

Sirmione and lugana vineyards.

  • Level: easy
  • Duration: 2.5 h
  • Length: 32 km (19 miles)
  • Towns: Sirmione , Pozzolengo, San Martino ( Desenzano )

This trail is perfect for wine lovers , since it guides you through the vineyards of Lugana , a fine local white wine. The route starts from the Pier of Sirmione and heads south, towards the tower of San Martino della Battaglia (a hamlet of Desenzano).

The trail continues until Pozzolengo , a small and quiet village south from Sirmione, and then back north through the vineyards: you will reach the beach in Punta Grò , where you can take a dip in the lake before going back to the pier of Sirmione.

Cycle-pedestrian path in Limone sul Garda

This trail is very short and easy, but it’s really worth a visit because of its breathtaking landscape: when it was inaugurated in 2018, it was defined as “ the most beautiful bike path in Europe ”. And with good reason: this trail is built overhanging the lake , suspended between sky and water.

To date this route is pretty short, so that you can also walk on it, but soon it will become part of a bigger project called “ Garda by bike ”: in a few years, we will be able to bike around the perimeter of Lake Garda, away from traffic.

Valtenesi Bike Trail

  • Level: medium
  • Duration: 3 h 30 mins
  • Length: 48 km (30 miles)
  • Towns: Salò, Manerba, Moniga, Lonato, Padenghe, Polpenazze, Puegnago

This route is more challenging than previous ones, but if you want to spend an afternoon discovering the castles and hills of western Lake Garda, that’s probably the best way. This area, called Valtènesi , is dedicated to the production of the homonymous wine : don’t miss the opportunity to taste it, maybe as an aperitif after a tiring ride!

The trail starts in Cunettone, a hamlet of Salò, goes south through Manerba and Moniga until Maguzzano (Lonato), then west to the Castle of Drugolo (Lonato), then up north, through Polpenazze and Puegnago, and arrives in Cunettone again.

Bike Trails on eastern Lake Garda (Veneto)

Cycle-pedestrian path lazise-punta san vigilio.

  • Duration: 45 mins
  • Length: 10 km (6.2 miles)
  • Towns: Lazise , Bardolino , Garda

The bike trails that goes from Lazise to Punta san Vigilio (Garda) is very easy (so that you can also walk on it) but also very suggestive: it starts in Lazise , and runs along the lake going north, through Cisano , Bardolino , and Garda .

It arrives in Punta San Vigilio, a spectacular bay with a small harbour and a little church. If you feel like you’re living in a painting, you are: Punta San Vigilio is the setting of one of Tiziano’s most famous paintings, Sacred and Profane Love. This trail is ideal in spring, when the sun shines but tourists have not stormed the lakefront yet.

Peschiera - Valeggio - Custoza

  • Length: 45 km (28 miles)
  • Towns: Peschiera del Garda , Monzambano, Valeggio sul Mincio, Custoza

This one is a very scenic bike trail, that winds between hills and vineyards: in fact, this area is well known for its white wine , called Custoza . Most of the route is on a unpaved road, so we suggest to take a mountain bike.

The trail starts from Peschiera del Garda, on the southern shore of Lake Garda, and leads south, crossing Monzambano , until Valeggio sul Mincio (a very suggestive little town). It then comes back through Custoza and its vineyards, up to Peschiera.

Malcesine and Monte Baldo

  • Level: difficult
  • Duration: 5 hours
  • Length: 27 km (17 miles)
  • Towns: Malcesine , Navene, Tratto Spino

This is probably one of the most difficult trails on Lake Garda, but it’s also one of the most spectacular : the difference in height is challenging , since the path climbs and descends from Monte Baldo . You will reach an altitude of over 2.000 mt , so we suggest to do this route from May to November (when there is no snow).

The track starts from Tratto Spino , then climbs through Bocca di Navene and Bocca del Creer up to Monte Altissimo . The trail then descends towards Navene, through Prati di Nago, Dosso dei Roveri and Dos Spirano: you will arrive on the beautiful cycle path of Malcesine , that runs along the Lake.

Bike Trails on northern Lake Garda (Trentino)

Ponale road.

  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Length: 8 km (5 miles)
  • Towns: Riva del Garda , Pregasina

The Ponale Road is one of the most famous routes on northern Lake Garda: it was first built in the mid-19th century to connect Riva del Garda with Ledro Valley and the small Lake Ledro , to the north-west of Lake Garda.

A large part of the route overlooks the lake and therefore offers a spectacular view of Upper Lake Garda. The trail is not difficult at all, so if you happen to be in Riva del Garda it’s surely worth a visit!

Lake Tenno Road

  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Length: 22.5 km (14 miles)
  • Towns: Riva del Garda, Tenno

This path is not particularly difficult, but has challenging uphill sections, so we recommend it to those who are already familiar with biking . It winds through vineyards and olive groves, and offers postcard-views on the lake.

The route leads from Riva del Garda to Lake Tenno , a little lake to the north of Lake Garda. If you happen to be there in the summer, don’t miss the chance to take a dip in its blue water!

Whether you’re looking for a quiet outing or a more challenging route, Lake Garda will certainly leave you satisfied!

VERDOLIN FAMILY

We are the latest generation of the Verdolin family, which has always been into hotels and catering. It all started with my father Lorenzo’s parents. Granddad Ettore and grandma Bruna were true pioneers who started off with a restaurant, and who then expanded the business with a just a few rooms. In time this inn became well-known among the travellers of the so-called “Bassa Veronese” area, the huge plain south of Verona that was famous for its rice fields.

My father grew up in the kitchen, where he tasted grandma’s pies. After helping out in his parents’ restaurant and running the inn, he met Elvira, our mum, and decided to follow in his parents’ footsteps.

The most scenic Lake Garda hotels for an elegant Italian escape

For where to stay along Italy’s famous shoreline, look no further than our favourite Lake Garda hotels

lake garda hotels

One of Italy's top holiday destinations , along with Venice , Florence and the Amalfi Coast, Lake Garda is the place to go if you're looking to soak up the natural beauty of the country, along with the glamour of its lakeside towns.

Spend your days cruising the water by boat, calling in at towns such as Salò on the west shore and Riva del Garda, with its backdrop of the Dolomites; or head down to Sirmione in the south to see its harbour-facing fortress. The northern Italian region is also close to bigger towns, including Verona, where you can go on a Romeo and Juliet pilgrimage, Venice and Milan . The lake’s clear waters are famous – but you’ll also be able to enjoy your hotel’s pool (if you've booked wisely), many of which are perfectly positioned for prime views out across Garda’s shores. For the ultimate wellness resort, book a restorative stay at Lefay Resort & Spa , where you’ll be able to enjoy state-of-the-art spa treatments and therapeutic programmes that will help to address any ailments, all with a view of Lake Garda through floor-to-ceiling windows. Classic hotels that are full of charm include Villa Arcadio , Villa Cordevigo and Grand Hotel Fasano ; or for something with a more modern makeover, try Locanda del Benaco or Vivere Suites & Rooms . These are the very best hotels in Lake Garda…

Villa Arcadio

lake garda hotels

Villa Arcadio is as heavenly as its name suggests. The hotel has everything you could hope for from an Italian hideaway, including a terrace with a view, a mountain-facing pool, vaulted interiors and simple but classic rooms with beamed ceilings and polished terracotta floors. The hillside setting also has lake-edge olive groves and orchards.

The pool should see to all of your fitness needs, but there’s also a yoga studio, a Finnish sauna and a running trail winding its way through the woodland. Unsurprisingly for Italy, the restaurant is excellent and gourmand guests will also be able to head to local olive oil producers and wineries for tastings. It's just a few kilometres from the centre of Salò.

Villa Cordevigo

lake garda hotels

With a backdrop of cypress trees, a yellow-sunlounger-lined pool and, of course, the shimmering lake itself, the joyously sunshine-coloured Villa Cordevigo is an idyllic Lake Garda hotel. It has its very own Michelin-starred restaurant – at Oseleta, Italian food gets elevated and the wine cellar has more than 600 labels to choose from. It's billed as a 'temple to Italian cuisine' so lovers of the nation's food are in for a treat. The Veneto villa complex has been owned by various counts over the centuries, with the current custodians transforming the noble residence into a hotel. A Renaissance chapel, Italianate garden and a vast vineyard all form the estate, and there’s also a spa offering treatments on a waterbed for even more relaxation than usual.

Lefay Resort & Spa

lake garda hotels

If you're in search of the best hotels in Lake Garda and a super spa resort, look no further than this restorative retreat. Lefay is one of the world’s leading wellness destinations. Just one look at its spectacular backdrop will be tonic enough – it has a magical mountainside setting above Lake Garda. The scenery is soothing, but you’ll also be able to sign up for entire programmes that will deal with everything from sleep problems to bad posture. The acclaimed spa has floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing the lake, seven types of sauna, 21 treatment rooms (plus two self-contained spa suites) and both indoor and outdoor saltwater pools. With 27 acres of woodland and olive groves, strolls to the orange-tree-lined lakefront of the neighbouring town Gargnano and, of course, that excellent, well-equipped spa, feeling in peak health before you leave is almost guaranteed.

Lido Palace

lake garda hotels

The mountain-backed Lido Palace is in the lakeside town of Riva del Garda. The Grand Tour-worthy getaway has been eased up to date with a glass atrium, abstract artworks, a neon-lit bar and colourful furnishings. As is the norm in most of the best hotels in Lake Garda, the famous water is on show through floor-to-ceiling windows. The five-star retreat is a member of the Leading Hotels of the World collection. The Belle Epoque building, which was constructed in 1899, is perfectly placed for evening strolls into town – the grounds lead straight onto the lake-edge promenade – and these northern shores are also popular for sports such as sailing, kayaking and windsurfing.

At Lido Bar and Bistrot, guests can dine on classic Trentino cuisine, all washed down with some delicious local wine, of course.

Hotel Locanda del Benaco

lake garda hotels

This boutique hotel is in Salò, the biggest town on Garda’s west shore. Hotel Locanda del Benaco is an antidote to all of the grand old residences found among Lake Garda’s hotels – instead, the minimalist design here has more of an industrial accent, making it the ideal hotel for fans of a modern-leaning aesthetic. The promenade perch means the town centre is easily reached – the duomo, museums and a beach are all within walking distance, and there are hiking paths for something a little more active – but you won’t have to go far for a hearty Italian meal, since the hotel’s Mediterranean restaurant is excellent.

For the ultimate Lake Garda experience, book a room with a picture window in front of the bed, for uplifting views of the water to greet you when you wake up.

Hotel Bellariva

lake garda hotels

For a hotel in Lake Garda that is a little away from the action, book a stay at Hotel Bellariva , which is in the quieter town of Gardone Riviera, on the lake’s western shores. You won't be far from the action, though, since it's also close to the buzzier town of Salò. There are 23 rooms and eight apartments for anyone hoping to stay for longer – and, with such a prime position on the lake, you’ll certainly be tempted. It’ll be even harder to leave if you’ve got into the habit of nightly aperitivo hour on the veranda overlooking Lake Garda. Gardone is the perfect location choice to take in the region’s culture, too – the home of the poet Gabriele d’Annunzio is nearby and is now a museum, with an amphitheatre that was commissioned in 1935 but not completed until 2020. Alas, D'Annunzio never saw his dream of a theatre is his home completed, as he died in 1938.

Prati Palai

best hotels in lake garda

This charming, adults-only rural residence has just nine suites, which means it’s perfect for exclusive-use group bookings, should you be in search of a Lake Garda hotel for a special occasion. Prati Palai is part of a farm and the estate spans almost 45 acres of gardens, woodlands and olive groves, all overlooking the lake. Guests can wander in the surrounding meadows, hike the trails through the woods and go in search of the perfect picnic spot. There's also a tennis court and a bowling green, or guests can venture into the pretty village Bardolino (which is just 30 kilometres away from Verona) for an afternoon stroll.

There’s no formal restaurant – the hotel is designed to feel more like a private country house – but staff will always ensure you’re well fed, with salads and sandwiches, all made with local produce.

Vivere Suites & Rooms

lake garda hotels

This is another Lake Garda hotel for admirers of more modern design, with details such as futon-style or pared-back four-poster beds, partition screens and perfectly positioned lamps. The small-scale stay is in the medieval castle town of Arco, just to the north of Lake Garda.

There are just six rooms at Vivere , which is set a few kilometres from the shoreline. The agriturismo has a veranda overlooking the pool and a living room with a fireplace for the cooler months, and each room has its own garden and private entrance. The family’s farm produces honey, extra-virgin olive oil and red wine, so you’ll be able to stockpile all the essentials before you check out – or put them to use in your suite’s kitchenette first.

Grand Hotel Fasano

lake garda hotels

Conveniently located for city dwellers in need of some rural relaxation (or indeed tourists charting a Grand Tour of their own), Grand Hotel Fasano is between Venice and Milan. It has had a while to ease into being one of the best hotels in Lake Garda – the historic stay has been welcoming guests since the 19th century, tempting visitors with its stellar service, palm-filled parkland and proximity to the Dolomites (which makes it the perfect pitstop for both skiers and hikers). The building was once a hunting lodge belonging to the Austrian royal family. For today’s guests, pastoral pleasures include paddle-boarding and canoeing on the lake, dinners on a terrace overlooking the water, Ayurvedic treatments by Aveda or Sothys Paris rituals at the spa and carefree bicycle rides along the shoreline.

Villa Cortine Palace Hotel

lake garda hotels

In a historic villa on the shores of the lake, surrounded by acres of parkland, Villa Cortine Palace Hotel is located in Sirmione, so it's a good choice for guests in search of healing waters. This resort town on the southern shores of the lake is famous for its thermal baths and medieval castle. The picturesque peninsula is also home to the archaeological site of Grotte di Catullo. The centuries-old private parkland is studded with towering cypress trees and statuary. There are many romantic places in Lake Garda, but the terrace of the hotel’s fine-dining restaurant is surely one of the most spectacular. Book one of the smart tablecloth-covered spots at the water's edge and enjoy an indulgent evening under the stars.

Villa del Sogno

lake garda hotels

As with many of the best hotels in Lake Garda, Villa del Sogno has a lot of history – it was built in 1904. The hillside hotel is between Gardone Riviera and Fasano, and both towns are within walking distance of the property. To Fasano, it’s just five minutes on foot and to Gardone Rivera, the walk should take around 20 minutes. Either option will be equally idyllic. The first place to stroll around however is the hotel’s gorgeous grounds, with gardens that slope down the hill to the bank of the lake. The views of Lake Garda from this grand neoclassical villa are wonderful and best enjoyed out on the lengthy terrace, which is home to the hotel's refined Maximilian restaurant. There's also the American Bar to retire to for a glass of Armagnac, a cigar and a trip back in time. Live piano music only makes the latter even better.

Grand Hotel Terme

lake garda hotels

Grand Hotel Terme is in Sirmione, one of the most attractive parts of Lake Garda (and there's certainly some stiff competition). All of the communal areas overlook the lake – and the L’Orangerie restaurant has an especially good vantage point, making it the perfect place for a romantic meal. Here, guests can dine on dishes such as trout with a refreshing ginger gazpacho and herby potatoes, and ravioli with ricotta, goat's cheese, spinach cream, confit tomatoes and roasted pecans.

The hotel has its own mooring, for easy access to excursions on the water – practically an essential activity in Lake Garda. There are sunloungers and white parasols lined up along the jetty for sunbathing with a view of the water. The spa makes use of the resort town’s famous thermal waters, with an extensive array of treatments and programmes, and experts on hand for consultations should you require something a little more specific.

Hotel Villa Capri

lake garda hotels

Nowhere does classic luxury like Italy and for a truly traditional lakeside stay in Lombardy, book a stay at Hotel Villa Capri . You may be a long way from the Amalfi Coast and this hotel's namesake isle, but the shores of Lake Garda are just as glamorous. The stately villa is surrounded by greenery on the western shore of the lake, near the town of Gardone Riviera. There’s a small jetty ready for boat trips on the water, an outdoor pool with an impressive view and a terrace that’s just perfect for aperitivo hour. For an especially scenic start to your day, take breakfast out on the terrace for a mesmerising vantage point out across the lake to enjoy alongside your cornetti . It's a great Lake Garda hotel choice for golfers, since there are various courses to tackle nearby.

Locanda San Vigilio

best hotels in lake garda

Going one step further than merely being lakeside, Locanda San Vigilio is on a small promontory extending right out onto the waters. Its location alone makes it a contender for the best hotel in Lake Garda. The grand 16th-century building has a pool surrounded by greenery that includes olive groves, cypresses and oleanders.

There’s plenty to see and do on these shores, but the locanda is also just a two-hour drive from Venice (and half an hour from Verona, for any Shakespeare fans in search of a certain famous balcony) – plus, it’s close to olive-oil producers and some of the region’s most celebrated wine producers. The hotel has its own harbour for private boats and the public ferry calls in nearby, too.

Monastero Arx Vivendi

best hotels in lake garda

Monastero Arx Vivendi is a Lake Garda hotel that perfectly unites old and new – a glass-fronted extension has been added to the exterior of the old monastery, but original details such as the wooden beams remain intact. It has a serene temple aesthetic, with clean lines, vaulted ceilings, arches, pristine white furniture, and lots of calming neutral and grey tones. At the spa, things get even more relaxing, with saunas, a hammam, treatment rooms and chill-out spaces. There’s also a sleek, dark-tiled pool in the grounds. At the restaurant, guests can dine inside the cloister walls or out in the cloister garden, imbibing wine from local wineries and feasting on locally sourced ingredients. Outside the retreat is the town of Arco, a tonic in itself, set between mountains and the lake.
