If you're a frequent business traveler, are planning a destination wedding, or just need to get a formal ensemble from point A to point B, a garment bag is a must. Though disheveled clothes with huge creases are sometimes inevitable byproducts of packing a suitcase, this clever carrier will help prevent wrinkles wherever you go.

Ironing takes up valuable time — which you might not have to spare with a packed itinerary — and not all hotels have steamers. Whether you're transporting a three-piece suit, a floor-length gown, or just an outfit you need to put on as soon as you deboard the plane, a garment bag is the solution. When browsing options, think about the size and length you need, if you want it to fold up, and what storage features you might use.

To help you find the right one for your needs, we tried 22 garment bags in our testing lab. After packing them up, we evaluated each one for ease of use, capacity, performance, quality, and overall value, and we will continue to test them in the real world for another six months as well.

Best Overall, Duffel

Mark & graham commuter 2-in-1 garment bag.

Mark & Graham

  • Ease of Use 5 /5
  • Quality 5 /5
  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Performance 5 /5

It has lots of organizational features and folds up compactly enough to qualify as a carry-on.

After six months of use, we noticed the zippers are prone to snagging.

The best duffel-style option we tested is the Commuter 2-in-1 Garment Bag from Mark & Graham — a brand known for its product line made of high-quality materials and designed with superior organizational features. It unfolds to reveal a hanger for your garments, plus various pouches and pockets, including compartments for two pairs of shoes. We were impressed by how much fit inside — a men's suit, dress pants, a button-down shirt, two dresses, a belt, a pair of loafers, a pair of stiletto heels, a water bottle, and a smartphone. We appreciate the generous capacity and the fabric's durability as, even after six months of use, it still looks good as new.

This lightweight garment bag is a piece of cake to carry, even when it's full of clothes and shoes. The twill-washed nylon exterior seems sturdy and resistant to tearing. It passed our water-resistance test with flying colors, too, so you can bet it'll protect your clothing from moisture damage.

When folded up into the duffel configuration, the Commuter Garment Bag is nice and compact. It also easily fits within the carry-on size restrictions for most airlines and we think the high-quality design is worth the investment.

Best Overall, Wheeled

Travelpro platinum elite 50-inch check-in rolling garment bag.

This high-end, smooth-rolling bag fits 15 hung items, plus multiple pairs of shoes and various accessories.

You may want to invest in shoe bags when packing those inside this case as there’s no designated separate section.

Our favorite wheeled option is the Travelpro Platinum Elite Rolling Garment Bag. This carrier effortlessly fit everything on our packing list and then some — two suits, dress pants, a button-down top, two dresses, a belt, a pair of loafers, dress shoes, stilettos, a laptop, a water bottle, and a lunch box. It fit roughly 15 items on the built-in hanger and secured them in place when we zipped everything up. There are also mesh compartments on the corners and various zippered pockets for stashing accessories and other small items, plus a TSA-approved lock if you plan on checking it.

The Platinum Elite Rolling Garment Bag was a breeze to roll around on carpet, hard floors, and concrete — and it's not too heavy to lift, even when packed full. Throughout our six-month test, we used this bag a handful of times including on a trip to London and we found that it's even easy to roll alongside larger, checked luggage. It also passed our durability assessments, showing no signs of wear and tear after using it on a trip and dragging a stiletto heel across the exterior. At nearly $400, this garment bag is more expensive than most but the high-quality design, spacious capacity, and organizational features still stand out.

Best Waterproof

Seyfocnia convertible carry-on travel garment bag.

  • Capacity 4.8 /5

It has a water-repellent exterior and a spacious capacity with a shoe compartment and various pockets.

The faux leather exterior isn't scratch-resistant, and there's no designated laptop sleeve.

A waterproof carrier will help ensure your nice clothes don't get wet or wrinkled en route. We like this one, which has a faux leather exterior with a special fiber coating that repels liquids. This duffel-style garment bag has a generous capacity and closes easily, even when packed full. Besides multiple formal ensembles, we fit a pair of heels, a laptop, a water bottle, and a toiletry bag. We like that there are lots of useful pockets and a shoe compartment, but a designated laptop sleeve would be nice.

This bag is lightweight but doesn't feel cheap at all, and it's comfy to carry, thanks to the padded straps. You can also slide it over your suitcase handle with the trolley strap. The faux leather did sustain a scratch when we dragged a stiletto heel across the surface, though the material didn't rip. Considering the reliable, protective design and organizational features, the price range is more than reasonable, even for occasional use.

The Details: 22 x 12.5 x 12 inches | 4.4 pounds | Fiber-coated faux leather | Waterproof

Best Attachable

Away the garment bag.

  • Performance 4 /5

This sophisticated garment bag is the perfect medium size, but it's still large enough to fit a floor-length dress, a suit, and two pairs of shoes.

The zippers can snag a little, so be careful when opening and closing them.

Away's take on the garment bag is this sophisticated briefcase-inspired number. We appreciated the sleek, straightforward design and found it to be a perfect medium size for most trips. When unfolded, it's long enough to fit a floor-length dress or a suit — with room to spare for multiple pairs of shoes and a light jacket. Just a heads up, the zippers can snag a little on the enclosed fabrics, so be careful when opening and closing the bag.

All in all, it feels like a high-quality, durable product. After six months of use, we love that the nylon exterior provides plenty of protection from dust and debris as well as some water resistance. It is also spacious enough that it prevents wrinkles, even when storing items long term. With comfortable handles, a removable shoulder strap, and a trolley sleeve for slipping it over your suitcase handle, this versatile garment bag was made with plane travel in mind. You can bring it as a carry-on or a personal item, and it's definitely compact enough to fit underneath the seat in front of you. If you travel often for work or are looking to upgrade your current, cheaper garment bag, this one is definitely worth buying.

The Details: 22.5 x 20.5 x 3.5 inches | 2.3 pounds | Nylon | Water-resistant

Best for Multiple Garments

Wallybags garment bag.

  • Quality 4.5 /5
  • Performance 4.5 /5

This sizable bag can fit multiple long dresses, men's suits, overcoats, and costumes, and holds up to 30 pounds of weight.

A longer clamp would allow it to hold even more hangers.

Need something that can hold more than one thing? The WallyBags Deluxe Garment Bag is big enough for long dresses and gowns, suits, tuxedos, overcoats, dress shirts, costumes — you name it — and it can hold up to 30 pounds of weight. We were able to fit all items on our packing list (with room to spare) and secure everything together with the included hanger clamp. A longer clamp would allow you to fit additional hangers, but if you put multiple items on a single hanger, you can fit more inside.

The garment bag is made of polyester and features a water-resistant coating. It seems durable enough to withstand a journey by plane or car and didn't sustain any scratches during our stiletto test either, making this a solid value for the price point.

The Details: 60 x 22 x 3 inches | 5 pounds | Polyester | Water-resistant

Best for Business

Zegur suit carry on garment bag.

It easily fits a suit, an overcoat, and two pairs of dress shoes, plus accessories, with room to spare.

The exterior material is somewhat rugged, reminiscent of a backpack or outdoor-friendly duffel.

If you go on frequent work trips and need a solution for transporting your suits and other business attire, we recommend the Zegur Suit Garment Bag. We could fit a suit jacket, dress pants, a button-down shirt, and two pairs of dress shoes inside with plenty of room to spare. There are also multiple pockets for stashing a belt, ties, cufflinks, and other accessories. After attaching your hung items, you can fold it up and carry it like a messenger bag or briefcase using the shoulder strap or grab handles, respectively.

Though it's designed like a briefcase, the material has a rugged quality, which is more reminiscent of a backpack or outdoor-friendly duffel. Still, the quality is very apparent — the zippers work great, and the exterior didn't scratch or scuff during our tests. This garment bag seems like it'll probably last forever, and the brand backs it with a five-year warranty. So the price is absolutely reasonable, if you ask us.

The Details: 23 x 22 x 4 inches | 2.9 pounds | 1800-D polyester | Waterproof

Most Durable

Degeler garment bag.

  • Capacity 4.5 /5

This extremely resilient bag resists tearing and repels water while protecting the clothes inside, and the main compartment is easy to load up with hangers.

There's no designated shoe compartment, but the mesh pocket works for shoes.

Degeler's SkyHanger Garment Bag really stood out in terms of durability. The ripstop nylon exterior is lightweight yet extremely tough; it didn't tear or even scratch when we ran a stiletto heel across the surface. What's more, the water-resistant material didn't feel damp at all when we repeatedly sprayed it with water. This bag could probably get run over by a car without sustaining any damage — and any clothing inside would be protected too.

We like how the main compartment opens wide, making it easy to load with hangers. It effortlessly fits several items, and the upper button latch prevents the hangers from falling into the bag. While there's no designated shoe compartment, the interior mesh pocket works well for footwear. We also appreciate that this garment bag is compact enough to fit within a larger suitcase, or it can be used on its own as a carry-on or checked bag. Comfy leather handles are the final cherry on top.

The Details: 21 x 21 x 1 inches | 1.1 pounds | Ripstop nylon | Water-repellent

Best for Weddings

Samsonite garment bag.

  • Ease of Use 4 /5
  • Performance 4.8 /5

This well-made carrier fits multiple suits and gowns, then folds into a messenger bag for easy transport.

It can be hard to zip closed when packed full, and longer dresses might wrinkle on the bottom.

If you're heading to a wedding (or planning a destination wedding of your own), Samsonite's Just Right Garment Carrier might be your best bet. When unfolded, it's big enough to fit a suit or a gown and has handy loops for your hangers. We should note that, while you can use it for a floor-length dress, the bottom might wrinkle in transit, so think about whether you'll have access to an iron or steamer where you're headed. You could also fold your dress down at the waist to make it shorter in transit.

Though this bag is big enough to fit multiple items, bear in mind the zippers can be hard to close when it's packed full. Still, all the other pockets and exterior compartments were easily accessible and zipped closed without a fuss. Once full, it folds into thirds and becomes a messenger-style bag with a padded adjustable strap. There's also a trolley sleeve, so you can slide it over your suitcase handle. This certainly isn't the most affordable option we tried, but we can't deny the excellent quality and functionality.

The Details: 22 x 16 x 2.5 inches | 3.4 pounds | Nylon

Best Organization

London fog buckingham 44-inch wheeled garment bag.

  • Quality 4 /5

This garment bag has a sizable main compartment and various pockets throughout for stashing accessories and carry-on essentials.

It doesn't have the highest capacity and may be best for weekend trips.

We also liked London Fog's Buckingham Garment Bag. The spacious design held three dresses, a pantsuit, a blazer, two shirts, a pair of shoes, a belt, a tie, a laptop, and a water bottle. Besides the main compartment, there are tons of pockets of various sizes both inside and out. In addition to clothes and accessories, you'll have plenty of room for things like books, snacks, or chargers. Needless to say, it makes a great carry-on.

This garment bag folds into itself and becomes a messenger bag but you may not want to tote it that way at 11 pounds when empty (heavier than most others we tried). But, although the shape is a bit bulky, the wheeled design is a breeze to roll around on carpets, hard floors, or the sidewalk. The Buckingham bag passed our durability test as well and shows no signs of wear and tear after six months of use. In the end, we think the features and overall quality reflect its price tag.

The Details: 23 x 22 x 4 inches | 11 pounds | Nylon

Most Spacious

Modoker convertible garment bag.

  • Capacity 3 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5

This roomy bag has space for multiple garments, plus various accessories, toiletries, a laptop, and more.

It has more capacity as a duffel bag than as a garment bag.

The Modoker Convertible Garment Bag stood out for its spacious design. It has a large main compartment where you can hang a suit, dress, or jacket. Then when you fold it up into a duffel, it has ample storage and pockets for accessories, toiletries, a laptop, a water bottle, snacks, and chargers. There's even a shoe compartment for stashing heels or dress shoes.

Though you can hang multiple items, we should note it has a bigger capacity as a duffel bag than as a garment bag. Still, the roomy design and organizational features make it an excellent carry-on option. Made of jacquard polyester with a water-resistant coating, this garment bag seems durable enough to withstand any mode of transport while protecting your belongings from damage at the same time.

The Details: 23 x 12 x 11 inches | 2.5 pounds | Jacquard polyester | Water-resistant

Most Compact

Calpak garment bag.

Small enough to be a personal item or slip into a wheeled carry-on, this compact carrier can fit multiple outfits, shoes, and accessories.

It's harder to close with bulky shoes in the shoe compartment, and it's too short for long dresses.

Need something smaller? Check out Calpak's Compakt Garment Bag. Despite the compact design, we were able to fit everything on our packing list, including a suit, dress pants, a shirt, a tie, a belt, and a pair of shoes. Though it's too short for longer gowns, you can also fit a couple of dresses. The shoe compartment was harder to close with larger men's shoes, but it worked well for women's flats. After six months of tests, this garment bag still looks brand new and has become a permanent staple of closets for long-term protection of seasonal items.

When packed with items of various shapes, the bag was still easy to fold up — and you can tighten the straps to make it more compact (and even fit it inside a larger suitcase). This garment bag is small enough to qualify as a carry-on or personal item on a plane, or you could check it instead. Toting it around is no problem, either, thanks to the comfy, sturdy handles. Not only that, but the ripstop nylon exterior appears to resist tearing and water, so you can rest assured the contents will be protected in transit. We also like that this carrier comes in both neutrals and bright, punchy colors.

The Details: 20 x 19 x 1 inches | 1.2 pounds | Ripstop nylon | Water-resistant

Best Budget

Misslo 43-inch gusseted travel garment bag.

  • Quality 3.5 /5
  • Capacity 4 /5

This no-nonsense garment bag fits multiple outfits and folds in half for easy carrying.

The cheap material isn't very durable, and it lacks organizational features.

On a budget? Go with the Misslo Gusseted Garment Bag. The straightforward design can be quickly packed up. We were able to fit two dresses, a shirt, pants, a suit jacket, and a belt, and the transparent window makes it easy to see what's inside. Beyond the main compartment and hanger slot, it doesn't have much in terms of organizational features. More pockets would be useful, but for under $15, we really can't complain.

It folds in half to be carried with the attached handles. Though the straps appear pretty sturdy, this bag is made of a non-woven fabric that may not stand the test of time. That said, if you need something for one trip and aren't too worried about durability, you won't be disappointed.

The Details: 43 x 22.5 x 3.5 inches | Non-woven fabric

Other Garment Bags We Liked

Halfday The Garment Duffel : This bag was easy enough to pack, though the hanger loop doesn't fit as many hangers as others we tried. Still, we liked the structured design of the duffel and found it comfortable to carry using the handles and shoulder strap.

Away The Centerfold Garment Sleeve : Available in three sizes, this garment bag is lightweight without sacrificing durability. We wish it had more pockets and organizational features but were all-around impressed with the design.

Travel Select Amsterdam Business Rolling Garment Bag : This garment bag has a huge capacity, with space for several hung items and multiple pairs of shoes. However, the upper hook only has room for four hangers, so you might need to put multiple pieces on a single hanger.

The Travel + Leisure team researched today's best garment bags and selected 22 to try firsthand in our testing lab and in real-life settings over a six-month period. After inspecting each bag and examining the features, we packed them with various clothing items (suits, dresses, coats, etc.), plus shoes and accessories if there was room.

Once closed, we carried them around, lifted them overhead, and rolled the ones with wheels. We also assessed whether they worked best as carry-ons, personal items, or checked baggage. Additionally, we ran a stiletto heel over the exteriors to check for scratch and puncture resistance, then sprayed the bags with water to see if they repelled moisture. Each garment bag earned a score for ease of use, capacity, quality, performance, and value, and those with the highest scores made it onto our list.

Tips for Buying Garment Bags

Pay attention to length.

When buying a garment bag, pay attention to the unfolded length. This will tell you what types of items you can hang inside, like suits, dresses, and coats. Some are too short for longer dresses, in which case you can try folding the dress at the waist. Otherwise, have a plan to iron or steam items upon arrival.

Think about foldability

Many garment bags are meant to fold up and be carried around as a duffel or messenger-style bag. Keep this in mind, as folding can crease the items inside. Folding will also double or triple the thickness of the bag, which might make it harder to zip when packed with several articles of clothing.

Consider storage features

In addition to a main compartment with a hook for hangers, garment bags often have other storage features. This might include zippered pockets, a designated shoe compartment, a mesh pouch, a laptop sleeve, or a water bottle holder. These aren't absolutely necessary, but they can certainly come in handy if you use your garment bag as a carry-on.

Look for easy-carrying options

Lastly, look for a garment bag that's easy to get from point A to point B. For instance, some fold up into a duffel or messenger bag with grab handles or a detachable shoulder strap. Others have trolley sleeves meant to slide over a suitcase handle to consolidate your luggage. And some garment carriers are wheeled, so you can roll them around with minimal elbow grease.

Place your clothing items on hangers, then attach them to the upper hook or loop. Some garment bags are spacious but can't fit as many hangers, in which case you might want to put multiple items on one hanger. For extra protection from potential damage, cover each piece with a dry-cleaning bag. If there's a shoe compartment or other pockets, fill those after hanging your garments in the main compartment.

Bifold garment bags fold in half, and trifold garment bags fold into thirds. Aside from the number of potential creases in your clothes, there isn't much difference between the two. What matters more is the size and shape of the folded bag and whether it has straps, handles, or other features for carrying it around.

In most cases, a garment bag can count as a carry-on . The size limit is usually roughly 22 x 14 x 9 inches — if it's small enough, it can even qualify as a personal item. Some airlines allow you to hang your garment bag when you board in a designated closet located in the front of the plane. That said, all airlines are different, so be sure to check the specific rules and requirements ahead of time.

Briggs & Riley Baseline 2-Wheel Garment Bag : Best Garment Bag Overall

Briggs & Riley Baseline Garment Bag

Briggs & Riley is one of the most respected luggage brands in the industry. They built super durable luxury suitcases and have an amazing lifetime guarantee.

They also have some awesome garment bag designs. The Baseline 2-Wheel Garment Bag is an amazingly-well designed carry-on suitcase with dedicated hanging storage with a folder design to keep your formal clothes crisp and neat. It rolls on two wheels with an extendable handle, so it’s very easy to move through the airport.

In addition to the hanging storage, this bag has a separate packing compartment where you can store additional clothing or accessories. There are also two exterior pockets that are perfect for keeping essentials like electronics, passports, or books. These features make it much more versatile and functional than most garment bags. For many trips, this could be your only piece of luggage.

The downside is the high price. If you’re a frequent traveler, it may be worth it for the unbeatable quality and warranty.

AmazonBasics Trifold Garment Bag : Best Budget Garment Bag

AmazonBasics Preimum Garment Bag

If you’re on a budget, shopping on Amazon can be a great way to save on affordable luggage and travel gear. AmazonBasics is an in-house brand that focuses on selling functional, highly-rated products at affordable prices, from AA batteries to outdoor furniture.

The AmazonBasics Trifold Garment Bag is a simple and well-thought out carry-on size garment bag with a carry handle and padded shoulder strap.

The simple hanging design makes it very easy to pack your clothes with their hangers. There are two tie-down straps to prevent creases.

In addition to the clothes storage, there are tons of internal and external zippered pockets for packing socks, shoes, ties, electronics, books, pens, an anything else you can think of.

Victorinox Werks 6.0 Global Carry-On : Best Carry-On Garment Bag

Victorinox Werks 6.0 Softside Global Carry-on

Victorinox is best known for making the classic Swiss Army Knife, but they also build some very functional and durable travel gear.

I personally prefer just having one carry-on , and I don’t want to deal with suitcase and a separate garment bag on the plane. The Victorinox Werks 6.0 Global Carry-On solves that problem with an innovative design that includes a dedicated garment folder in a standard carry-on suitcase.

At first glance, this is a fairly typical carry-on, with spinner wheels and a large zippered main compartment. Inside, though, there is a fold-out panel and a hanging clip for formal clothes.

The biggest downside is that the garment folder isn’t very long, so it won’t be ideal for longer items like full-length dresses. It’s still one of the best men’s carry-on options for traveling with a suit, though.

Away Garment Bag : Best Garment Bag for Suits

Away Garment Bag

Away is a startup travel brand that has rocked the internet with their clever and omnipresent marketing. They make sleek, beautiful products that are designed to take some of the stress out of travel.

The Away Garment Bag is a super simple hanging design that looks good and is easy to use. There aren’t any totally unique features, but it does work really well for packing up to two suits.

One of the best features is the built-in strap that makes it really easy to attach this garment bag to the side of your suitcase. This makes it easier to roll through the airport and keeps your other hand free. There’s also a shoulder strap if you want to carry it that way.

Samsonite Just Right Garment Carrier : Best Garment Bag for Dresses

Samsonite Just Right Garment Carrier

Samsonite is the most recognizeable luggage brand in the world. Their products are everywhere, and for good reason: they build solid luggage and travel bags at a wide range of pricepoints.

Traveling with a dress isn’t always easy, but the Samsonite Just Right Garment Carrier is designed to eliminate the hassle. It’s long hanging design makes is really easy to pack, even with long dresses, and there are plenty of pockets for accessories, including shoe pockets for two pairs of shoes.

You get plenty of options for carrying this bag. There’s a tote handle, adjustable shoulder strap, and a luggage handle-passthrough.

The only problem with this garment bag is that it probably doesn’t have enough storage space to replace your main carry-on, so you’ll have to bring both through the airport.

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Checked Rolling Garment Bag : Best Rolling Garment Bag

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Checked Rolling Garment Bag

Travelpro was founded by an airline pilot who invented the original upright rolling suitcase. He started by making luggage for flight crews, and now Travelpro has a full range of luggage and bags for all travelers.

The Travelpro Maxlite 5 Checked Rolling Garment Bag is a big two-wheeled bag with hanging storage for suits, dresses, dress shirts, and more. The metal hanger clip makes it super easy to pack and is very secure, so you know your clothes won’t shift during travel.

I really love the wheeled design, especially for a large garment bag like this. Rolling luggage is much easier to move through the airport than traditional garment bags that you have to carry in your hand or on your shoulder.

My biggest complaint is the size. This bag is huge, and for most people it will be overkill. If you’re bringing a lot of hanging clothing, though, it can’t be beaten.

Halfday Garment Duffel : Best Garment Duffel Bag

Halfday Travel Garment Duffel

Many garment bags are pretty single-purpose. They work well at carrying a suit or dress, and that’s about it. If you’re looking for something more versatile garment duffel bags may be the way to go.

The Halfday Garment Duffel Bag is a unique design that can open out into a full garment bag, and then zipper together to create a duffel bag for the rest of your items. If you want one compact bag that can hold a suit or dress and a weekend’s worth of clothes, this is it.

This definitely isn’t the best dedicated garment bag out there, but it really nails it when it comes to versatility.

Briggs & Riley Carry-On Garment Spinner : Best Wheeled Garment Bag

Briggs & Riley Baseline 21” Garment Spinner

If you’re looking for an easy-to-pack, easy-to-roll garment bag on wheels, the Briggs & Riley Carry-On Garment Spinner is a slick carry-on garment bag that rolls on four spinner wheels.

This luxury garment bag combines the convenience of wheeled luggage with the ability to secure and protect clothing during travel. You can fit up to three suits inside and have plenty of room for everything else you need for a short trip.

Inside there are tons of zippered pouches for shoes, accessories, and more. Every inch of space is well used, and the organization features make it easy to have a designated space for everything. Seriously, I’ve never seen a garment bag that’s this well-thought-out in terms of organization.

Additionally, the exterior pocket gives you a space for essential items you want easy access to without opening the main compartment.

NOMATIC Garment Bag : Best Men’s Garment Bag

NOMATIC Garment Bag

NOMATIC got their start through crowdfunding, and now they build a wide array of sleek travel backpacks and bags. While they’re best known for their laptop and travel backpacks, they also make a solid carry-on garment bag.

For men, traveling with a garment bag usually means carrying a suit, whether you’re traveling for. Your top priority should be arriving at your destination with a crisp and uncrumpled. The NOMATIC Garment Bag is simple, lightweight, and perfect for keeping your suit jacket, pants, and dress shirts in pristine condition during travel.

This lightweight garment bag is clean, simple, easy to pack, and easy to carry. It can hang from a wall hook, doorknob, or in a closet for easy packing, and it zips completely over your suit to keep it from shifting around.

The shoulder strap and luggage pass-through also give you options for carrying it through the airport.

Unlike some other options on this list, this is definitely nothing more than a suit garment bag. While it’s great at that purpose, it doesn’t have the same versatility as some of the convertible duffel bag or wheeled luggage options.

CALPAK Compakt Garment Bag : Best Hanging Garment Bag

Calpak Compakt Garment Bag

Hanging garment bags are some of the easiest ones to use. You can simply hang them up from a wall hook or in a closet, and then you have full access for packing and unpacking.

The CALPAK Compakt Garment Bag is one of the best in this category. When packed, it’s compact and lightweight, and when you unfold it and hang it up it’s like having a whole mini closet open up in front of you, with easy hanging storage and a wide array of interior and exterior pockets.

Unfolded, the whole bag zips wide open. There is a simple loop for hanging clothes, and it’s super easy to pack in dresses or suits.

You also get a shoe compartment, small zippered accessory pockets, and see-through mesh pockets that make it easy to see what’s in each.

Zegur Suit Carry-On Garment Bag : Best Garment Bag for Air Travel

Zegur Suit Carry-on Garment Bag

The Zegur Suit Carry-On Garment Bag is a solid product that manages to pack in the features of a deluxe travel garment bag at an impressively low price. It folds out wide to make it easy to pack hanging clothes, and has padded interior straps to prevent creases.

In addition to the garment storage, this bag has a wide-opening front pocket that’s loaded with smaller organizing compartments. There’s even a padded sleeve for your laptop!

These additional features make this a perfect carry-on to load with all your travel essentials and throw in the overhead compartment.

Travelpro Crew Carry-On Rolling Garment Bag : Best Rolling Garment Bag Carry-On

Travelpro Crew VersaPack Carry-On Rollig Garment Bag

I’m a huge fan of rolling garment bags, especially when they have enough space and extra pockets to serve as my main carry-on.

The Travelpro Crew Carry-On Rolling Garment Bag is durable, stylish, and uber-organized. It has great storage for your formal clothing plus tons of compartments for other clothing and accessories. On shorter trips, this could easily be your only piece of luggage. I love that versatility!

The fold-out design makes it very easy to pack suits or dresses into this carry-on garment bag, and padded tie-down straps keep everything in place.

Wally Bags Trifold Carry-On Wedding Dress Travel Bag : Best Wedding Dress Garment Bag

WallyBags Tri-Fold Wedding Dress Garment Bag

If you’re traveling with a wedding dress, you want something that’s specifically made for that purpose. The Wally Bags Wedding Dress Travel Bag has extra length and features that make it perfect for long wedding dresses.

At the top of the bag there is a unique clamping system that holds hangers securly in place. You can fit multiple full-length dresses and won’t have to worry about them shifting around.

Finally, this carry-on garment bag is easy to carry with the detachable shoulder strap, carry handles, or luggage attachment.

Travelpro Platinum Elite 25” Check-In Spinner : Best Garment Bag Luggage

Travelpro Platinum Elite 25

If you’re shopping for both a garment bag and standard checked luggage , it makes a lot of sense to get one product that can fill both purposes.

The Travelpro Platinum Elite Check-In is primarily a medium softside checked suitcase, and it works great as a standard suitcase. There’s more going on here though. The built-in folding suiter also makes this a fully capable travel garment bag for suits, dresses, or other formal clothing.

With this super versatile travel bag, you can pack your formal clothing and still have room for other clothing and essentials for longer trips.

Modoker Convertible Garment Bag : Best Convertible Garment Bag

Modoker Convertible Garment Bag

The final product on this list of travel garment bags is a unique convertible design. The Modoker Convertible Garment Bag can open out wide to make it easy to pack hanging clothing. Then, you zip up the garment panel, fold the bag together, and it becomes a compact travel duffel bag.

The materials and build quality aren’t the best, but as a tradeoff, this bag is less than half the price of many other highly-rated garment bags. And it is well-designed and functional.

Overall, the Modoker Convertible Garment Bag is a very versatile, affordable choice for all types of travel.

How to Choose the Best Garment Bags

Here are a few pointers to assist you in selecting the ideal garment bag. You’ll never have to wear wrinkled or untidy clothes again if you invest in the appropriate bag!

Easy to Hang And Pack

Ease of packing is one of the most important features in any garment bag. Look for a design that can lay totally flat and open for packing. You also want a bag with built-in straps to hold your clothes in place while you fold them.

You should ideally look for a clothes bag with a low-profile hanging loop. This function allows you to effortlessly hang the bag in your closet, hotel room, or restroom while you pack and unpack it.

Quality Materials

Never choose a garment bag made of low-quality materials. Poor-quality fabric can lead your bag to flex or crease, which defeats the purpose of using a garment bag. Always pay great attention to the material of the garment bag you want to buy. Choose a product that is made of a sturdy material that will not crease even when folded.

Carry-on garment bags normally have maximum dimensions of 22 x 14 x 9 inches. As a result, it’s usually a good idea to double-check the maximum size at the airlines you plan to use before purchasing.

The length of the carrier bag is another crucial feature. If you plan to carry lengthy gowns or dresses, be sure the bag can hold them and maintain them wrinkle-free.

The Best Garment Bags for Travel, Tested and Reviewed

By Meaghan Kenny

Image may contain Clothing Apparel Coat Bag Briefcase Human and Person

Some trips, like business travel or destination weddings , require a more thoughtful packing strategy—and this is where the best garment bags come into play. You can't just toss an evening gown, bridesmaid dress , or suit in your carry-on and expect it to remain wrinkle-free. Plus you don't always have the space to pack a portable steamer —or the time to steam!—and not all hotels have an iron when you need one. Wrinkles aside, when packing speciality clothing items, you also want to limit the possibility of any liquids spilling in your suitcase and onto your clothes. A protective, high-quality garment bag you can trust to keep dresses and suits as stain- and crease-free as possible is a must-have for travelers headed to formal events.

There are plenty of options on the market, so to help narrow down a list of only the top-recommended garment bags, we asked our editors and frequent travelers for their personal picks. Whether you're headed to your best friend's beach wedding or prepping for your own honeymoon , these are the tried-and-true garment bags that will keep your favorite pieces of clothing wrinkle-free and in tip-top shape.

This gallery has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

best travel garment duffel bag

Samsonite Just Right garment carrier

Most functional bag

This is my personal favorite garment bag for vacations. When zipped and folded up like a briefcase, it looks pretty slim and feels lightweight. But don't be fooled—this thing is supremely functional. I can fit three formal dresses inside (a few more if they're lightweight summer dresses ) and all of my accessories for the trip. What I love most about this nylon bag from Samsonite is how many thoughtful pockets it has. Inside, you'll find a few small zippered pockets for jewelry and hair accessories, two spacious shoe compartments for a pair of sandals or heels , and a hook to keep clothing items secure. The outside looks so sleek and features a zippered exterior pocket, top handle, and a long, adjustable shoulder strap so it can be easily carried. I love how it keeps everything for formal occasions organized and all in one place. This would be an ideal option to put your formalwear in for a cruise, too.

Dimensions : 16" x 2.3" x 22"  Weight: 3.4 lbs.

Calpak Compakt large garment bag

Best for destination weddings

Several Condé Nast Traveler editors are big fans of Calpak luggage , and the brand's large garment bag's thoughtful features illustrate why: It's made of water-resistant nylon and is collapsible thanks to a tri-fold design, making it easy to pack right in your suitcase. Take it from a former bride herself— Traveler contributor Erika Owen used Calpak's large garment bag for her destination wedding in Iceland and swears by it. She says of the bag: “The pockets were so handy and allowed me to keep all of my tiny wedding essentials (hair pins, deodorant, jewelry) safe.” When you open up the garment bag, you'll find four mesh, zippered pockets for small essentials and two roomy pockets for shoes. There's also adjustable closure straps, an exterior pocket, and a top handle that makes it easy to hang on a closet or bathroom door. This one's perfect to keep everything you need for the big day all in one place and separate from the rest of what you packed.

Dimensions : 48" x 23" Weight: 1.45 lbs.

Halfday The Garment Duffel

Best weekender bag

In theory, I love the idea of being someone who packs light, of exuding a vibe of low-maintenance ease. Plus, there's so much cool gear out there that speaks to that energy, like this hybrid garment-bag-duffel-bag by Halfday. It's a garment bag that removes the stress of folding clothes like suits and dresses, but offers the added functionality of transforming into a weekender and carrying all your other must-haves like a Dopp kit with all your skincare and, I guess, underwear. So I took the Halfday for a test drive on a weekend in the Bahamas, and I can confidently say that, though your mileage may vary, it's perfect for short trips. I was able to pack two suits, some shirts, a pair of jeans, and some, but not all, of my essentials; I still had to bring a carry-on suitcase onto the plane. (I also brought three pairs of shoes. I am not, it should be said, someone who packs light.) So if you don't need six outfit options for a two-night trip, this is a perfect fit for you on its own. As for me, give me a shout when they invent garment bags that turn into a trunk. — Matt Ortile , associate editor

Dimensions : 22" x 12" x 12" Weight: 2.3 lbs.

Monos Garment Sleeve

Best to fit in a carry-on

Another favorite of mine comes from Monos, one of our editors' go-to brands for chic and durable luggage . I turn to this slim, lightweight garment sleeve when I'm limited on packing space in my suitcase but still want to keep a special dress or two protected. It holds three pieces of clothing and can be folded down into the shape of a briefcase to fit neatly in a carry-on. (I've put it inside my Monos carry-on and still had room to put more clothes on top.) This one feels well-made and does a great job of preventing creases and wrinkles while in transit. I'd recommend this option for business travelers, wedding guests, or anyone short on space. I like the Check-In option for a little more room, but it's available in a Carry-On version , too.

Away The Garment Bag

Best to attach to your suitcase

When we asked travel experts to share their favorite garment bag, the response we heard most often was Away's The Garment Bag. Lexie Alford , the youngest recorded person to travel to every country , has definitely picked up plenty of packing tips on her travels. She likes this garment bag from Away specifically because of how it can be easily strapped to her carry-on luggage . “Checking garment bags can be a pain at the airport, especially if you have expensive pieces,” she says. “It's great for peace of mind to keep them with you during long travel days.”

Fashion writer and Traveler contributor Samantha Crompton Merinder was a bride herself last year and also recommends this one. She says it fits three full-length dresses and that the exterior pockets kept her jewelry and accessories organized during transit. “It makes getting dressed virtually stress-free because your look is in one place upon arrival,” she says. Away's sleek garment bag is made of water-resistant material and features a convenient trolley sleeve.

Modoker convertible garment bag with shoulder strap

Best Amazon find

A duffel bag and garment bag all in one, this convertible bag from Amazon can be used for all sorts of trips. When you're not using it as a classic garment bag to keep dresses and suits wrinkle-free, it doubles as a regular, tear-resistant weekender bag with a side compartment to store shoes and adjustable shoulder strap that makes it easy to carry. LNA Clothing co-founder Lauren Alexander loves this one for special occasions. “This convertible garment bag can fit so much stuff and is super affordable,” she says. “I have yet to find a name brand that makes one as good as this.” This waterproof duffel has plenty of smart features, like a trolley sleeve, detachable shoulder strap, handle buckle, and several small pockets for jewelry or other accessories.

Dimensions : 37.5" x 20.8" x 45" Weight: 2.5 lbs.

Travelpro Platinum Elite carry-on rolling garment bag

Best rolling garment bag

It looks like a small carry-on, but it's actually a garment bag on wheels. Lara Kramer , Traveler's former global associate director of audience development, used this rolling garment carry-on for her honeymoon in Italy, Croatia, and Montenegro a few summers ago. While smaller than an average carry-on, Kramer told us it holds way more than you think. “I was able to pack a few nice dresses and my husband fit an entire suit, all of which remained wrinkle-free, which was a game changer,” she says. Kramer also loves that when you purchase this bag, it comes with a plan that covers the cost of repairs or damage from airlines for up to one year, including shipping costs. “Yes, this bag glides seamlessly through airports and is incredibly durable thanks to its nylon fabric with Duraguard coating, but the lay-flat garment bag design is the real gem of this carry-on," says Kramer.

Dimensions : 14" x 22" x 9.5" Weight: 9.9 lbs.

OOO Traveling garment bag

Best lightweight bag

Made of polyester, the OOO Traveling garment bag is super lightweight at just 0.8 ounces and has a full-length center zip closure that keeps your nicer items in pristine condition. Alison Bruhn , stylist and co-founder of The Style That Binds Us , likes that the garment bag can be folded inside a suitcase or folded in three sections and slipped over the retractable handle of your luggage. We also love the under-$70 price tag of this light-as-air bag.

Dimensions : 19" x 37.5" Weight: 0.8 oz.

For weekends away and other short trips, duffel bags are an ideal pick for your luggage. They’re lightweight, so they won’t dent your airline allowance, and they can be as bare-bones or as feature-packed as you’d like. Plus, they can easily fold down for storage or travel flat in your checked bag as a backup carry-on if you do a little shopping on your vacation. And they look cool, whether you go for a classic take on the duffel or a more modern design.

There are a ton of duffel bags out there to choose from, including classic designs, affordable-but-durable canvas bags, and convertible wheeled options. We tested 19 duffel bag options in our Brooklyn testing lab with an eye toward durability, organization, and value.

Why Trust TripSavvy

Best overall, patagonia duffel bag.

Deceptively spacious

Multiple ways to comfortably carry

Convenient self storage

Nothing yet

Patagonia calls its duffel line the Black Hole series because of the seemingly endless amount of space these bags offer. Indeed, our testers noticed and enjoyed the vast amount of space this bag—which comes in 40-, 55-, 70-, and 100-liter sizes—truly has. But perhaps the best part about this bag is its ability to collapse in on itself and pack down into a smaller inner pocket.

Beyond its packability, this solid bag scored well throughout our testing. Its ultra-durable ripstop fabric is highly water resistant. Attachable backpack straps give you different ways to haul it around, while zippered side pockets and daisy chain loops help boost the storage and carrying capacity. "This is a very good quality bag with a nice design and great features," one tester concluded. "It can also fit more contents than its appearance suggests." Hence, the Black Hole.

Weight: 2.19 pounds | Dimensions: 22.5 x 13 x 8 inches | Volume: 40 liters (55, 70, and 100 liters also available) | Planet and Social Impact: Made with recycled fabric, materials, and webbing

Easy to maintain

Spacious external pockets

Gonex's Canvas Duffel Bag is a classic-looking duffel with handles, a shoulder strap, ample interior space, and many smaller exterior pockets. While our testers could not fit all items into the main center pocket, they were able to utilize the side pockets to complete packing. They also liked that the handles connected via Velcro and found that the extra removable shoulder strap boosted comfort and maneuverability.

The bag's material held up during durability tests, and our testers were impressed that the cloth stayed clean throughout. Our conclusion? "This is a solid choice for someone looking for a duffel on a budget," one tester surmised.

Best Weekender

Dagne dover landon carryall bag.

Dagne Dover

Attractive and practical

Excellent organization

Easy to pack

Some creasing in material during durability tests

Dagne Dover is known for stylish, well-thought-out, minimalist bags, and its carryall duffel is no different. With long straps and a tapered shape that hugs close to the body (rather than, like some duffels, uncomfortably bouncing against it), this bag is a faithful companion for long weekends and shorter trips. It’s full of the thoughtful details the brand is known for, too, and we mean full: Think a padded laptop sleeve for laptops up to 16 inches, a shoe duster, a key leash, a water bottle pocket, and a mesh pouch to keep hand sanitizer and lip balm on hand. Made from super-durable neoprene, which is great for travel, the bag is water-resistant and can be hand-cleaned.

"This bag is made for travel," one tester reported. Our testers loved all the pockets and accessories. They also loved the included zip bag for shoes and how wide the top zip opened for packing accessibility. "I loved this bag, and while the price is steep, it does seem like the type of item that will last a long time and can be used for various types of travel," one tester concluded.

Weight: 2.82 pounds | Dimensions: 15 x 9.5 x 12 inches | Volume: 5 to 42 liters (XS, S, M, L, XL sizes) | Planet and Social Impact: Lining made with recycled materials, like recycled bottles

Best Rolling

Eagle creek no matter what rolling duffel.

  • Portability 4 /5

Rugged, long-lasting build

Steady carry

Loads of storage space

Shoulder strap could use improvement

Eagle Creek's No Matter What duffel basically says it all in the name. With sizes up to 133 liters, this super durable and water-resistant bag comes with wheels, making it ideal for pretty much any trip or adventure. Our testers were impressed by the large capacity. They loved the broader straps, which felt very comfortable. "The handle straps were very nice in preventing the bag from swaying when maneuvering, and it feels comfortable in the hand," one tester noted. "For shorter people, the bag allows the wide handle straps to double as shoulder straps, which feels more comfortable than the adjustable shoulder strap."

The No Matter What passed all of our durability tests without any scratches or scuffs, and testers noted it felt tougher than most other bags tested. "We would recommend this bag, especially for the traveler looking for a duffel with wheels," our testers concluded. "It holds a lot and is also soft enough that it can squeeze tightly into an overhead bin."

Weight: 2.7 pounds | Dimensions: 33 x 15 x 16 inches | Volume: 39 to 133 liters (S, M, L, XL sizes) | Planet and Social Impact: Not listed

Best for Durability

Yeti crossroads duffel bag.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Portability 3.5 /5

Adjustable internal organization

Rugged Yeti build

Pockets could be deeper

Not as convenient to store away

Yeti's name has become synonymous with toughness, whether you're buying mugs, tumblers, coolers, or carry-on luggage for men and women. The Crossroads duffel is no different. This large-capacity bag is constructed with Yeti's proprietary TuffSkin nylon and comes with sturdy, rigid partitions on the inside to separate compartments. "The hardshell bottom makes the entire product feel durable and worth the price," one tester noted.

The bag comes in 40- and 60-liter sizes and features side pockets, a water bottle or tumbler holder, and a padded laptop "vault." While our testers did appreciate the bag's durability, they noted that it also added some weight and a level of rigidity that prevents the bag from being packed down small. Still, if your travel involves outdoor adventures where amped durability and strength are luggage necessities, the Yeti is worth the extra spend and weight.

Weight: 4.3 pounds | Dimensions: 23 x 15 x 10 inches | Volume: 60 liters (40-liter version also available) | Planet and Social Impact: Not listed

Best Eco-Friendly

Serious standard of sustainability

Comfortable and functional

Zipper can be problematic

Eco-friendliness aside, the Catalina Deluxe is simply an excellent travel bag. But we also love that it's gentle on resources. The bag comes in recycled polyester or organic canvas and doesn't use harsh chemicals, pesticides, or synthetic fertilizers in its production. Bonus: The brand claims the sourcing and production of the bag encourage species diversity.

But beyond the feel-good environmentally conscious production, our testers loved how easy the bag was to carry using the shoulder straps and top handles. In particular, our testers enjoyed the bottom layer for packing shoes and sneakers. If you're looking for a highly functional bag that's also good for the planet, this is it.

Most Rugged

Thule chasm sport duffel bag.

  • Capacity 4 /5
  • Design 4 /5

Thoughtfully designed details

Choice of carry style

Tough, travel-ready exterior

No pockets on the outside

Our testers were thoroughly impressed with Thule's Chasm Duffel Bag. From its organizational capability to the comfort of its backpack straps, its solid materials, and its waterproof zippers, testers raved about this bag. Thule uses tarpaulin fabric, which is durable and weather resistant. It also features a padded bottom for extra protection of packed items. Its two-in-one design makes it easy to convert from a traditional duffel to a backpack. And there are multiple grab handles around the bag for moving it quickly.

"The bag, when fully packed, is a lot to carry without the backpack straps," one tester commented. "But it's easy enough to hold and carry with the straps." Said another: "I like the size, durability, zippers, and backpack straps of this bag. It also comes with a packing cube that can be used for clothing, toiletries, or even a small pair of shoes."

Weight: 4.22 pounds | Dimensions: 30 x 13 x 10.5 inches | Volume: 40 liters (70, 90, and 130 liters also available) | Planet and Social Impact: Not listed

Those familiar with Patagonia won't be surprised to find one of its bags topping our list. Rugged, spacious, and easy to store, the Black Hole Duffel is an excellent choice. If you're looking for a budget option, you can't go wrong with the Gonex Canvas Duffel .

Products were selected based on our editors' prior knowledge and experience with luggage brands and products. We also based selections on highly reviewed and rated duffel bags on Amazon and other e-commerce sites. A finalized list of 19 duffel bags was created to meet a wide range of budgets and intended uses.

TripSavvy editors tested all 19 bags mentioned in this roundup in our lab in Brooklyn, New York. Attributes like organization, maneuverability, durability, and value were all considered. After weighing and measuring each bag, we packed it with five shirts, five pairs of pants, two jackets, two pairs of shoes, one toiletry bag, and one coffee mug. We then rated each bag's organizational features based on that list.

With the bags fully packed, we carried them around the testing lab to assess their maneuverability. We carried each bag with handles, shoulder straps, and cross straps when available. Lastly, with the bags still packed, we pushed each one off the top of a ladder three to five times, making sure the bag landed at a different angle each time. We checked how well the coffee mug fared and if there were any visible scuffs, scratches, or marks on the bag's exterior.

Samsonite Tote-A-Ton Duffel Bag : This is a solid choice for anyone wanting an inexpensive bag that holds a lot. Our testers saw this bag as better for a road trip than carrying it through an airport or train station.

Leatherology Kessler Duffle : Our testers thought this was a good option for a high-end leather bag. But for the casual traveler or someone looking for a decent weekender, it's a bit pricy. We envision this being a solid hop-off-the-plane-and-go-to-work bag.

L.L.Bean Adventure Rolling Duffle Bag : Our testers thought this was a solid bag. They enjoyed how it rolled and, despite a rather narrow opening, were impressed by how much it could hold. Testers definitely recommend it.

Carhartt Trade Series 2-in-1 Packable Duffel : This bag is another good pick for anyone looking for a solid weekender bag. This is a good option for a small bag that's meant to look worn.

Rains Duffel Bag : Our testers liked this bag, and while they said they'd like to see the cross strap be more padded, they would recommend it for anyone looking for a durable, waterproof weekend bag.

Baboon to the Moon Go-Bag Big : This bag holds a lot and is durable. Our testers recommend it for anyone road-tripping or car camping. However, with backpack straps only, it's not a true duffel.

Tumi Double Expansion Travel Satchel : Our testers were not impressed with this bag, especially considering its price. "This feels like a common bag," one tester concluded. "Most of the cheaper bags performed comparably, and some even outperformed this bag by a lot." Overall, the bag felt slightly flimsy and didn't hold as much as our testers saw in other bags.

Olympia 8-Pocket Rolling Duffel Bag : The Olympia 8-Pocket is a good option for anyone looking for a simple bag to make it from point A to B. But for anyone looking for a tougher bag able to hold up to more rugged travel, other options on the list are better. And while our testers loved the rolling feature, they did find it annoying to carry.

Yeti Panga Duffel : This bag is probably overkill for the average traveler. But for the adventure traveler or anyone looking to have a duffel that can double as a rafting, camping, or overlanding bag, Yeti's Panga is a solid choice. It's basically a Yeti soft backpack cooler in duffel form.

Paravel Foldable Bag : While this bag had a few things we liked (it's foldable and lightweight), we can't advocate it for extended or airplane travel. After a few drops from the ladder, the test coffee mug shattered, making us unwilling to recommend it for checked luggage.

Modoker Garment Duffel Bag : Less of a travel duffel and more of a gym or day bag, our testers did like the Garment Duffel Bag. Overall, testers reported wanting more space and pockets, but its durability and versatility rated well.

Away The Everywhere Bag : Our testers thought this bag was OK but not great. It looks chic but doesn't have the functionality or practicality our testers were looking for in a proper travel bag. "I like the style of the bag, and it would make a good complement as a carry-on, but I think travelers would need a larger size for more than an overnight," one tester concluded.

What to Look For in a Duffel Bag

Duffels come in all sizes, from an overnight carry-on to bags that can hold a week’s worth of gear. Envision your likely load, and think about sizing up a bit to give yourself some additional space. If you want an easy-to-carry bag to bring souvenirs home from a trip, look for one that collapses into itself so you can stash it in your other luggage and pull it out for the trip home.

Organization

If you’re in the market for one big bag to carry everything, models with a large main pocket will suffice, though they typically come with a few additional zippered pockets for smaller items. Other designs distribute their storage into a handful of different sections, which helps you keep things more organized.

Every duffel bag comes with a shoulder strap. Look for an adjustable, padded, and removable one for optimum comfort. Bags with wheels often include telescoping handles, which allow you to roll through airports and across pavement with ease, then lift the pack to carry it with the shoulder strap when the terrain gets rough.

Traditionally, duffel bags were made of tough natural fabrics such as leather and wool. The genius of these bags is the balance between flexible packing capacity and resistance to wear and tear. Nowadays, the market has branched out into innovative and functional materials looking to take this good idea to the next level; think canvas, polyester, vinyl, neoprene (like in the Landon Carryall ), and recycled materials. Choose a fabric based on where and how you typically travel, your budget, and your aesthetic tastes.

Sometimes it can be challenging to pack a duffel bag because of the lack of interior pockets and organization. It is best to put large, bulky items like shoes and things you won’t need access to so often on the bottom. Fold your clothes and place them on top along with essentials like your phone charger. The outer pockets can be used for small items like travel documents and toiletries. If you prefer more structure, packing cubes help make the most of your bag’s space. For added security, consider tossing in a luggage tracking device .

A heavy duffel bag can cause muscle strain, so be sure to alternate which shoulder you carry it on. Pay attention to the strap when choosing a bag to purchase, because some offer more cushioning than others. Also, try to carry the bag close to your body as this can reduce the stress put on spinal muscles.

Depending on the size of your duffel bag and how much you pack into it, a duffel bag can be a personal item. Most airlines consider a personal item to be anything that can fit in the space under the seat in front of you. If you plan to pack more in your duffel bag, it may be considered a carry-on and can be stowed in the overhead compartment. Extra-large ones will need to be checked.

If you’re traveling for business or need to carry formalwear for a special event, a convertible garment duffel bag could add great value to your trip. It has the capacity to hold an outfit on a hanger and then folds into a bag that carries loose items, saving you from the trouble of locating an iron while you’re away from home.

However, these types of bags usually aren’t manufactured by any of the more well-known luggage brands, so it’s vital to take a look at the quality of those currently available on the market. We’ve reviewed some of the most highly-rated convertible garment duffel bags out there and offered helpful tips on how to select one that best meets your travel needs.

Tips on Buying Convertible Garment Duffel Bags (Guide)

Strange smells.

One of the main complaints about convertible duffel bags in general is that they tend to arrive with a stuffiness often described to smell like fish. This is a common issue because of the manufacturing and packaging process, however, the smell can easily be removed with the right approach.

First, it would be advisable to ensure that your package arrives a good few days before your trip, as you’ll need to give the bag some time to air out. If the smell still hasn’t subsided after the bag has been left in the open (preferably outdoors) for a while, wash it with cold water. While doing this, it’s vital to be mindful of the type of material you’re dealing with and follow all the relevant care instructions.

Lastly, you can use a mixture of lemon juice and water on the fabric and then dry the bag in the sun. This should get rid of any remainder of the smell, so if you’re still experiencing issues, it would be wise to contact the manufacturer or seller for further assistance.

Understanding What Size Convertible Garment Duffel Bag You Should Get

When considering the best convertible garment duffel bag to meet your needs, you’ll need to be mindful of the dimensions of both the garment section and the entire bag once it’s been folded into shape.

Since you’re most likely already aware of how big the suit, dress, or other clothing items you’ll be taking on your trip are, you can use this information to discern whether the garment section of your chosen duffel bag is spacious enough to accommodate these. Some customers have complained that certain bags are too small to fit in plus-sized clothing, so if you’re concerned about this, you may need to opt for a bigger bag or fold your clothing item to meet the restrictions of the space.

Most people choose to use this luggage piece as a carry-on item , so it’s also important to ensure that your preferred convertible garment duffel bag falls within 22 x 14 x 9 inches or 51 linear inches (130 cm) . You can calculate linear inches by adding together the height, width, and length of the bag you’re interested in.

It’s also worth noting that you don’t need to follow these dimensions exactly to the inch because garment bags are flexible and they’ll usually fit within measuring bins if not overpacked. If your duffel is too large to be used as a carry-on, then it will have to be checked in for additional fees.

Other Things to Look out for Before Buying a Convertible Garment Duffel Bag

The most common material used in this type of luggage is polyester, as it’s incredibly lightweight and quite cheap to manufacture. You’ll be able to determine how durable polyester fabric is by its Dernier count – a measurement that refers to the thickness of the threads that have been woven together. The higher the Dernier count, the more durable and water resistant the fabric will be.

You may also find some bags made from nylon, which is even more lightweight than polyester is, but a bit more expensive, which is why it’s less commonly used. The quality of nylon is also measured in Derniers, but generally speaking, the fabric tends to be a lot more resistant to abrasion and wear than polyester.

If protecting your garments from the elements is your number one concern, it would be advisable to opt for a suitcase made from PU (polyurethane) leather , a synthetic material that mimics many properties of real leather – except its price! However, PU leather may wear quite quickly while in storage when compared to some of the other materials these bags are available in.

Component Quality

A convertible garment duffel bag is only as good as its zippers, so it’s vital that these, and any other fittings and components, are of good quality. Even among the most high-end luggage brands, zippers are often the most problematic element on a bag. They have a tendency to break off, get stuck, and fall apart if they aren’t fastened together.

Some garment duffel bag manufacturers opt for metal zippers rather than ones made from plastic, and others include studs and buckles to fasten the zipper closed and prevent it from opening prematurely. Nonetheless, if the quality of your zipper appears to be questionable from the moment you’ve received your bag, it would be wise to claim from the luggage manufacturer’s warranty before using it.

Handles and Straps

If you’ll be taking this bag as a carry-on, it’s vital to make sure that the straps and handles provide ample support and won’t cause strain on your wrists and shoulders while you board. While most convertible garment duffel bags include both carry handles and an adjustable strap, the quality of some is better than others. Look for handles and straps that are padded or ergonomically designed. It would also be wise not to overpack this bag, since you won’t have the option of wheeling it along if it becomes too heavy to carry.

Packing Capabilities

Utility is an important aspect of this luggage type, as you’ll want to ensure that the chances of your garments becoming tarnished or damaged are minimized . For this reason, many convertible garment duffel bags include pockets specifically for ties and shoes, making it easy to optimize the way you pack.

You’ll also find that some bag designs include small items pockets, which could prove useful if you’d like to store jewelry or cufflinks without the risk of losing them. Other bags also have smart exterior pockets that make it easy to stow your passport, stationery, or any other quick-access items.

An important aspect of a garment duffel bag is the amount of space you’ll have for your loose items. If you’re smart about how you pack, it’s possible to get by with this bag as your only piece of luggage on a short trip. When converted into a duffel bag, some pieces offer more space than others, so it would be wise to carefully consider your packing habits when deciding on which model will work for you.

On the other hand, overpacking the duffel section of the bag may make it difficult to manage while you’re boarding, and you’ll run the risk of it becoming too bulky for the overhead compartment of the plane. Some customers have also complained about the clothing in the garment section of the bag becoming wrinkled if there are too many items on top of it in the duffel compartment.

Ultimately, it will depend on what your priorities for this bag are when making your final choice.

Best Convertible Garment Duffel Bags in 2022 Compared

1. best overall: bukere convertible carry on duffel bag.

8 Best Convertible Garment Duffel Bags in 2022 9

This model from Bukere has incorporated all the features you want most in a convertible garment duffel bag. With a 55L capacity and duffel space measuring 22.8 x 12.4 x 11.8 inches (57.9 x 31.5 x 30 cm), you’ll have plenty of room to pack in all the essentials for your next trip. The bag has one of the most spacious garment compartments on this list , offering 41.5 x 21.5 inches (105.4 x 54.6 cm) for you to hang up as many pieces as you can fit. And, because it’s quite lightweight at only 2.78 lbs (1.3 kg), you won’t need to worry about exceeding airline carry-on limits.

One of the Bukere’s best features is the number of elegant design options on offer . The bag comes in 6 different colors, including both feminine and masculine options. This variety makes it appealing to people traveling for business purposes as well as those who may need eveningwear on a leisure trip. Plus, the scratch-resistant polyester fabric on the exterior preserves the aesthetic appeal of the bag, keeping it looking new for longer, and the protective feet at the bottom allow you to set the bag down whenever you need to without worry of scuffing.

If you’re someone who enjoys organizing your items efficiently when packing, you’re in for a treat with this garment duffel bag. The bag is fitted with four elastic straps that buckle together over your garment and keep it secure throughout your journey. It also boasts 13 compartments, including 4 anti-theft pockets, a tie segment with capacity for up to five ties, a shoe compartment, and nifty sections for your passport, boarding pass, or any other small items you may need to access at a moment’s notice. This allows you to keep fewer items in the main cavity of the bag, reducing the risk of the pieces of clothing in the garment section creasing.

Bukere has gone out of its way to reinforce the components on this convertible garment duffel bag by including explosion-proof zipper designs and load-bearing hooks for its detachable strap. However, it’s important to note that even elements of this quality may break or rip if the bag is overloaded. On the plus side, the one-zip design offers far more safety than bags that incorporate a multi-zip system , which will give you peace of mind while traveling. Although the bag doesn’t include studs or a buckle to fasten the zippers to the bag, you can use a padlock to hold them together if you feel the need to do so.

Moving the bag along during your journey won’t be too much of a hassle, as the handles have added comfort grips and padded straps to ease the load as you carry your bag . You’ll also be able to adjust the shoulder strap to better fit your height or use the strap on the back of the bag to fit it over the handle of your wheeled suitcase. Once you’re back home, storage is just as easy as the bag conveniently folds into a cube measuring only 11.8 x 3.5 x 11.4 inches (30 x 8.9 x 29 cm).

Overall, if you’re looking for a convertible garment duffel bag that hits all the major marks and won’t break the bank, this option from Bukere is the way to go.

2. Most Lightweight: Modoker Carry On Garment Duffel Bag

8 Best Convertible Garment Duffel Bags in 2022 10

If you’re someone who packs quite lightly and you simply need a small and compact garment duffel bag for an upcoming trip, the Modoker Carry On is the perfect fit. The bag weighs only 2.5 lbs (1.1 kg) and measures 22.8 x 11 x 11.8 inches (57.9 x 27.9 x 30 cm) when converted to its duffel bag form . So, while you may not be able to pack in as many items as you would in some of the other options on this list, your bag should remain effortless to carry throughout your trip.

Modoker has six stylish models available in this range, however, my favorite by far is the Blue Stripe version that will undoubtedly have you standing out from the crowd as you move through the airport. No matter which option you choose, you’ll benefit from the tasteful elegance of the jacquard polyester fabric – a textile type that incorporates intricate patterns into its design during the manufacturing process. This ultimately makes it more impervious to wear and tear and provides a good level of water resistance too.

Carrying the bag is a pleasure as Modoker has made use of PU leather on its handles, easing the stress on your wrists and palms if you choose to hold the bag alongside you as you walk. If you’d prefer, you could also opt for the adjustable shoulder strap with cushioning for added comfort. Before you check in your wheeled luggage you’ll have the option of sitting your duffel comfortably on top of it using the bag’s back flab to secure it.

Although the bag has only a 45L capacity, it has been well-designed to provide packing optimization and still offers great spaciousness . In fact, many customers have remarked that they were able to fit up to three days of clothes and toiletries in without overstuffing the bag. Once you’re done packing in your most-needed items, you’ll be able to close up your bag into its duffel form and fasten the zippers with the buckles that have been provided, preventing it from opening up unintentionally.

What’s most promising about choosing the Modoker is that the manufacturers are quite reliable. They offer good customer service and are passionate about delivering high-quality products. If you experience any issues with the model you’ve purchased, you should receive swift assistance once you contact support.

Overall, if you value quality over price, the Modoker is a great choice for you.

3. Most Affordable: Newhey Carry On Convertible Duffel Bag

8 Best Convertible Garment Duffel Bags in 2022 11

If you need a convertible garment duffel bag on short notice and you don’t have too much to spend, this model from Newhey will exceed your expectations. It’s loaded with great features considering its price point and should be quite durable with the right level of care. The bag offers plenty of packing space, with dimensions of 22 x 12.2 x 12.6 inches (55.9 x 31 x 32 cm) when in its duffel form, and 42.5 x 21.6 inches (108 x 54.9 cm) of room for your hanging garments. And, with three hooks for your hangers, you’ll be able to fit in more than just one garment if you need to.

The aesthetic aspect of this bag is quite geared toward professional use , so it may not be the ideal companion if you’re a fan of bright and vibrant colors. However, both the grey and dark black models are chic and sophisticated, offering an elegance that will match well with any other pieces of luggage you are carrying. To help keep your bag looking newer for longer, the exterior is made from durable, water-resistant polyester, and the bottom is fitted with pedestals that prevent scuffing on the fabric when you set it down.

The Newhey convertible garment duffel bag offers great organization of your belongings, which adds a great level of convenience during your trip. There are pockets designed to suit small items like belts, watches, chargers, electronics, and anything else you may not want to leave loose in the main compartment . And, to further prevent wrinkling of the garments in the hanging section of the bag, you’ll find reinforced buckles to keep your clothes as secure as possible. Any ties and shoes you may be carrying can be kept separate in their designated pouches too.

While there have been some complaints about the zipper quality on this bag, these are few and far between. In fact, Newhey has thoughtfully designed its components to remain as functional and long-lasting as possible . The zippers buckle together to prevent them from slipping open unintentionally, and the clips and straps are reinforced to ensure that they don’t break from the weight of your contents. Carrying the bag should be comfortable, as the handles and straps are padded and adjustable to meet your needs.

Overall, if you’re looking for the most affordable garment duffel bag that you can easily take as a carry-on on your next trip, you won’t go wrong with this model from Newhey.

4. Best Design: Seyfocnia Convertible Travel Garment Bag

8 Best Convertible Garment Duffel Bags in 2022 4

Whether you’re someone who prefers a playfully bright bag, or you’d like the subtle sophistication of darker leather, the convertible garment duffel from Seyfocnia has an option to meet your needs . In fact, you’ll even be able to choose between canvas or PU leather options, depending on which fabric better suits your tastes. Each design option offers chic embellishments that blend in well and match the overall aesthetic of the bag.

Because of the materials this bag is made from, it is one of the heavier choices on this list, weighing in at 4.4 lbs (2 kg). It also isn’t the most spacious, offering only 22 x 12.5 x 12.2 inches (55.9 x 31.8 x 31 cm) in its duffel shape, and 38 x 21 inches (96.5 x 53.3 cm) when opened into a garment bag. However, since it’s never advisable to pack this bag too full in the first place, the 45L capacity should more than suffice for a few days, and make it a little easier to carry the bag as you board. You also won’t have any trouble meeting the airline requirements or fitting the bag into the overhead compartment of the plane.

While most bags in this category are lined with nylon, which may tear if handled too roughly, the Seyfocnia offers a higher level of quality with a durable polyester lining that goes a long way in giving the bag a more luxurious feel . You’ll also benefit from decent compartmentalization capabilities, as the bag is designed with a number of pockets and pouches that make it easy to keep your items organized. The bottom of the garment section is even fitted with elastic straps that will attach to your clothing and keep it wrinkle-free as you travel.

The excellent quality of this bag is reinforced by the low number of complaints it’s received by customers. In most convertible garment duffel bags, components like zippers and straps, have been most reported to be problematic, but the Seyfocnia has made these quite durable by reinforcing them and using stronger materials. And, this hasn’t actually added too much to the price, as the cost remains in line with most other convertible garment duffel bags on this list.

Overall, if you’d like to find a unique design option that suits your tastes, yet be certain that you’re getting a high-quality bag, this model from Seyfocnia is the right choice.

5. Most Durable: Uniquebella Carry-On Garment Bag

8 Best Convertible Garment Duffel Bags in 2022 13

If you’re looking for a convertible garment duffel bag that will stand the test of time, look no further than this model from Uniquebella. The bag is made from the strongest form of polyester, measuring 1800 Derniers . This means that the fabric has been manufactured with thick fibers, which contributes greatly to its durability and ability to resist wear from the elements. Furthermore, the material is cationic, which is a process that allows it to hold its color for far longer – meaning that your luggage will maintain its aesthetic appeal for years to come. The only downside is that you may pay an additional few dollars for this level of quality.

One issue with this bag is its size. In its duffel form, it measures 23 x 12 x 12 inches (58.4 x 30.5 x 30.5 cm), and when you open it up to hang up your garments, you’ll have 38.5 x 21.2 inches (97.8 x 53.8 cm) of space to contend with. Most customers have quipped that this is a bit too small if you’re a larger-sized person , leaving bigger clothes with wrinkles if folded to fit the dimensions. It’s also been noted that hanging more than one garment in this section may be less than optimal.

On the other hand, handling and packing the bag is a pleasure. There are compartments conveniently located on both the interior and exterior of the bag , allowing you to safely store accessories and gadgets without leaving them loose in the duffel cavity. You’ll also be able to buckle together the zippers for added security and secure your bag on top of your checked luggage while wheeling it using the strap provided. If you need to carry the bag, you shouldn’t have much trouble as it’s incredibly lightweight at only 2.9 lbs (1.3 kg).

Uniquebella doesn’t manufacture this bag in too many different colors, and the ones that are available are mostly dark or low-profile. This makes it a great option for professional use or business travel, but if you’re hoping to add a pop of color to your vacation, you may not be too impressed with the selection on offer .

Overall, if quality is your top priority, the convertible duffel bag from Uniquebella is the ultimate choice for you.

6. Best for Women: Ytonet Large Hanging Duffel Bag

8 Best Convertible Garment Duffel Bags in 2022 6

For the ultimate feminine aesthetic, complete with gorgeous gold embellishments and tassels, you’ll want to take a closer look at the Ytonet Large Hanging Duffel Bag . The bag is available in only one color, a peachy pink aptly named Peachpuff. And, because it’s made from incredibly durable PU leather, the bag is completely waterproof, giving you peace of mind that your evening gowns and cocktail dresses are safe from the elements.

The bag is relatively spacious , measuring 18.75 x 8.99 x 14.75 inches (47.6 x 22.8 x 37.5 cm) when in zipped into its duffel form, and 40 x 18.75 inches (101.6 x 47.6 cm) when laid flat. You’ll also have the use of a generous shoe compartment that’s 12.3 x 10.2 x 4.8 inches (31.2 x 25.9 x 12.2 cm) in size. Unfortunately, there aren’t too many pockets, which may be a dealbreaker if you enjoy optimizing the organization of your items.

This model from Ytonet weighs only 3.06 lbs (1.4 kg) , so if you don’t overload it, you shouldn’t have much trouble taking it as a carry-on. The unit includes a detachable, adjustable shoulder strap that is fitted with padding for added comfort. The PU leather handles also go a long way in relieving strain on your palms if you choose to hold your bag at your side as you walk. You won’t have the option of placing the bag on top of your wheeled suitcase, though, as it isn’t fitted with a strap to accommodate this.

Overall, if you need something to suit feminine tastes that will add a flair of elegance to your next trip, consider this model from Ytonet.

7. Most Spacious: Canway Carry On Garment Bag

8 Best Convertible Garment Duffel Bags in 2022 7

If you’re looking for something lightweight that packs a punch in capacity, the Canway garment duffel bag is an excellent choice. It offers 60L of room for you to include essentials and more on your next trip , yet weighs only 2.61 lbs (1.2 kg) when empty. In its duffel bag form, its dimensions measure 24.4 x 11 x 12.6 inches (62 x 27.9 x 32 cm), and you’ll have a garment bag measuring 37.8 x 24.4 inches (96 x 62 cm) for your hanging needs.

The manufacturers have made use of incredibly durable materials in this model, giving you a lot more bang for your buck. The zippers are YKK – a well-known zipper manufacturer that offers next-level quality. The interior is made from a wear and water-resistant form of polyester, and the interior lining is polyester too – offering waterproofing between compartments.

The bag is considerably affordable , but this means you won’t benefit from a variety of color and design options. However, the black fabric does offer the versatility to blend in relatively well with most of your other luggage. You also won’t have much potential for compartmentalization on the exterior pocket, as it is large, with no pouches for the organization of your items.

Overall, if you need something spacious and don’t have many qualms about packing optimization, this model from Canway is brilliant.

Despite the expensive look, the bag is quite affordable and stays in line with the pricing of the other models on this list. And, with this low price point, you’ll benefit from a good number of tasteful features, including an adjustable shoulder strap with added padding, antislip feet on the bottom of the bag, and zipper buckles to prevent the bag from opening up unnecessarily.

The bag offers decent dimensions, with 12 x 12 x 21 inches (30.5 x 30.5 x 53.3 cm) of duffel bag space, and 37.5 x 21 inches (95.3 x 53.3 cm) of garment hanging space. It has 50L of packing capacity, yet weighs only 3.4 lbs (1.5 kg) when empty. Duffel bags are a great alternative to suitcases or backpacks and are designed to fit as much as you can comfortably carry.

Whether you’re looking for something small to carry on the plane, or a massive beast of a bag with wheels to pull behind you, there are plenty of great duffel bags to choose from.

A great duffel bag is one that has enough room for your clothing, enough extra pockets for your bits and pieces, and one that you’ll be able to carry, wear, or pull along with ease.

There are a number of qualities to consider before you buy your duffel bag.

Size and Capacity

Duffel bag

If you’re planning on being airborne with your duffel, it’s pretty important that it meets the carry-on requirements of your airline . This way, you no longer have to worry about checking your bag into the hold, and you’ll always have your personal belongings within easy reach in the cabin.

Small duffel bags will offer between 25 to 50 liters of usable space, and most of them will meet the 22 x 14 x 9-inch specification for most major U.S. airlines. These smaller duffel bags are pretty useful for weekends away, solo travelers, and those who only like to pack the bare minimum.

If you think you need a little more space to carry your gear with you, consider a 50- to 75-liter capacity bag. Perfect for those who need more space for extra layers, but aren’t worried about carrying bulky equipment, most of these medium-sized duffel bags will need to be checked in when you fly.

For those who do need to take the kitchen sink with them, large duffel bags with a 75-liter or higher capacity are an excellent choice for adventurers who need to haul heavy loads as they go.

From tents to fishing gear, and everything in between, you can fit everything into these oversized duffel bags, but watch your weight as bags over 50 pounds may incur excess baggage fees .

Because not all duffel bags are equal, it means that some can weigh significantly more when empty than others. If weight is an issue for you when you travel, consider the following before you buy:

  • Wheeled models will be heavier than non-wheeled duffels, with some weighing as much as 20% of your total 50-pound luggage allowance — even before you’ve started to fill it.
  • Heavy duffel bags are exhausting to carry long distances or up and downstairs, so think about how easy it will be to walk with your duffel when you need to.

Wheels vs. No Wheels

Wheeled duffel bags are much easier to lug around airports, and sling in and out of cars, boats, and trains. They usually have 1 main compartment that will hold your belongings with ease, making them the best-loved choice for those who need to take some serious sporting or camping equipment with them.

Duffel bags without wheels are also a strong contender for those looking to explore distant shores as they tend to be lighter to carry. Wheeled or rolling duffel bags can become unstable on rugged ground, causing your belongings to fall or spill. If you’re carrying it close to your person, this won’t happen.

Carry Options

Duffel bag carry options

The size of your duffel bag, how much it weighs, and how long you intend to be carrying it are all important considerations when it comes to choosing your new duffel bag.

Wear it like a backpack or carry it like a tote — there are options out there, and you should choose the one that best suits you.

  • Backpack-style Straps — If you like to throw your bag on your back and do not need to access it regularly, many of the premium duffel bags on the market offer removable backpack straps that have some light padding to make them more comfortable than regular straps.
  • Shoulder-style Straps — If you want easy access to your bag while you travel, and are only covering short distances, carry it using a shoulder strap. Lots of duffel bags come with shoulder straps that are removable.

Duffel bag handle

Whether you choose a wheeled duffel, or one without, at some point, you’ll need to rely on a handle to make simple maneuvers with your bag.

Every type of duffel bag will come complete with a handle of one sort or another. Your duffel could come complete with either or both of the following:

  • Carry Handles — This could be a simple padded handle that connects the backpack straps, a pair of dedicated handles like a handbag, or just a single carry handle. Any of these are useful for picking up your luggage and moving it from one place to another, as you’ll often need to do when you’re hot-footing it around the globe.
  • Grab Handles — Located at either end of the bag, or somewhere on the sides, these handles sit loose to the surface and can be used to “grab” your bag quickly or slide it along. These are very useful if you’re loading your duffel in an overhead bin, or putting it in a taxi.

Access, Pockets, and Organization

Duffel bag compartments

Duffel bags are designed for adventures, and with that in mind, you’ll no doubt want to make sure that you can carry everything with you when you go.

Most duffel bags will offer plenty of useful internal storage pockets to keep smaller items safe in transit and make it easy to find them when you need to.

External pockets are useful for items that you’ll need while you travel, such as your passport, your cell phone, or your noise-canceling headphones . Different brands of duffel bags will have different sizes and types of internal compartments.

If you’re paying bigger bucks for your bag, you may even find that it comes with expandable external pockets that work well for keeping dirty clothing or footwear away from the rest of your luggage.

Alternatively, they may have separate compartments inside the bag itself.

While we’re on the subject, we should also talk about daisy chains, also called lash points.

If you’re planning on traveling via plane, train, or automobile, you might be wondering why on earth you would need to worry about such things, but stick your duffel on a roof rack, saddle it to a donkey, or take it just about anywhere else when you get there and you’ll see how vital they are.

Bottom Line: If you’re planning on taking your bag with you on exotic adventures, you’ll want a duffel with plenty of reinforced lash points to keep your luggage safe and secure.

Waterproof duffel bag

Water Resistance

Being water-resistant doesn’t always mean waterproof , and you’ll do well to remember this while you travel. Duffel bags that are advertised as “water-resistant” are purely designed to keep your bag, and your belongings, protected from light rain and damp ground. If you throw your bag in the ocean, it won’t work miracles.

Usually made from durable, ripstop fabric, water-resistant duffel bags are treated with a DWR solution that will help to prevent the moisture from soaking in.

You should also be wary of zipper openings as these may be the weakest point on your duffel, and the place where the wet gets in if the weather is bad.

If you’re keen on water sports, you may want to seek out a top-of-the-range duffel that is made from fabric that offers better protection against actual torrents of water, but if you’re planning on sticking to dry land, water-resistant should be good enough for you.

Material and Durability

Duffel bag material

If you want a duffel, you’re no longer tied to stuffy old canvas ones.

Duffel bags are available in a wide range of materials, including ripstop nylon, leather , laminated nylon skins, and other water-resistant and durable materials that should stay in good shape, wherever you take them.

Thule Chasm Duffel Bag

Thule Chasm Duffel Bag

Weight: 2.86 pounds

Dimensions: 22 x 13 x 10 inches

The Thule Chasm Duffel bag comes in a choice of 2 different sizes (40 and 70 liters), but in this article, we’re looking at the sizable yet easy-to-carry 70-liter option.

Made from phthalate-free TPE laminate with a 1000D nylon base, this duffel is durable, water-resistant, and offers exceptional tear resistance. The bag also comes in an array of attractive colors. The Bluegrass option is perfect for sticking out in a crowd.

Because carrying your luggage is important, Thule has included removable backpack straps that make lugging your bag over long distances as easy as pie. When you get there, remove the backpack straps, and revert to using the duffel strap as usual.

The oversized, wide mouth opening is perfect for easy access to your belongings, and the external compression straps are designed to prevent your belongings from getting squashed up at the bottom when you carry it in backpack mode.

On the inside, there are also internal mesh pockets for keeping smaller items safe and a lockable, zippered side pocket for keeping small items secure and within reach while you travel.

  • Removable shoulder straps
  • Not overly comfortable carrying as a heavy backpack

  • Plambag Canvas Duffle Bag for Travel

Dimensions: 20.8 x 9.8 x 11.8 inches

This is a stylish and almost retro-looking duffel bag that’s well-suited to the traveler about town. Made from high-density, 16-ounce, 100% cotton canvas, and featuring classical bronze-tone hardware, this bag is as stylish as it is practical.

With a 50-liter capacity, the large main compartment can easily hold your clothes, shoes, and toiletries, as well as a 15-inch laptop or large iPad. The inner zipper pocket is perfect for smaller items, and the 2 side and front pockets, as well as 1 on the back, means you have plenty of space for everything you need speedy access to.

If you need even more space, there are 2 zippers on each side of this little duffel that will expand the capacity of the bag  and give you more room to carry your gear. The bottom of the bag is well cushioned and has a hard film protector to help keep your belongings dry and safe on dirty or damp floors.

Compact and easy to carry, this is a great overnight or weekend bag that has nicely padded handles and an adjustable and removable shoulder strap. Probably not ideal for around-the-world adventures, this is a capable duffel designed with style and practicality in mind.

  • Lots of pockets to stay organized
  • Zippers can get stuck

2. Affordable Wheeled Duffel From Amazon Basics

AmazonBasics Wheeled Duffel

Amazon Basics Ripstop Wheeled Duffel

Weight: 11.9 pounds

Another great bag from the Amazon Basics luggage range , this ripstop wheeled duffel comes in 26-, 30-, and 35-inch variations. They’re also available in multiple colors, such as black, blue, or red. Here we’ll look at the larger 35-inch version.

Its durable design makes this an affordable, yet practical option for anyone heading off on a vacation or adventure. With a 100% polyester top to protect against moisture in the air, and sides and a base made from 1680D ripstop nylon and 210D lining, this bag is strong and well-made for the price.

Because Amazon Basics understand that you want to take as much away with you as you possibly can, it has incorporated zippered front and main compartments for easy organizing and secure storage on the go.

The top portion is deep, and the opening is wide, making it easy to pack while the end pockets are perfect for stowing your passport, cell phone, wallet, keys, or anything else you need easy access to.

When it comes to moving your gear around, the upright, telescopic handle and inline wheels ensure easy mobility over smoother terrain and will cope (just about) with more rough roads on location.

Perhaps not as good as some of the more expensive rolled duffel bags, this is a good bet for the budget-conscious traveler.

Garment bags on a blue and green background

No one likes a wrinkle in their travel plans — or their travel pants for that matter.

While we can’t help a delayed flight or a weather mishap while on the road or in the sky, what we can do is help you travel in style with your suits and dresses pressed and ready to wear upon arrival.

No need to pack a steamer or iron (although, a travel steamer isn’t a bad idea) when you have a garment bag or a garment bag carry-on that doubles as your luggage.

Like a normal bag that hangs in your closet, these contraptions help keep suit jackets pressed, dresses unwrinkled and the rest of your delicates just the way you packed them — should they be able to be packed flat, that is.

Then, pack the garment bag in your suitcase or simply finish filling the carry-on and off you go, wrinkle-free.

We also share the luggage with consumer testers who provide us with real-life feedback about maneuverability, ease of use and handle comfort.

Continue on to find the best Amazon luggage for your next domestic flight or European vacation, plus tips on what to keep in mind while scrolling through the options. Samsonite's luggage has always stood out in the Textile Lab's evaluations, especially in tests for ease of use and durability. This bag received perfect scores for being easy to open and close, and it performed fairly well in our drop tests, taking on little damage. Testers who tried the Freeform suitcase agreed that the wheels were smooth and rolled with ease. Because it 's simple to maneuver, easy to pack and durable, it's the perfect pick for someone who's always traveling.

According to testers, the carrying handles are on the smaller side, so it's best to roll around rather than carry. The small carrying handles also make this suitcase more difficult to lift into an overhead bin. On Amazon, there are over a dozen neutral and fashionable colors to choose from, and you can pick between the carry-on, medium or checked bag, as well as a two-piece luggage set.

What Amazon shoppers are saying: "The carry-on is fairly lightweight and has good volume for packing as much as possible. It has a side handle as well as a top handle. That really helps me lift it up to place on a rack."

Dimensions: 10" x 15.25" x 21.25" | Weight: 6.5 lbs | Material: Polypropylene

Amazon Basics' luggage proved spacious in our Lab tests and received perfect scores for being easy to pack. O ver 34,000 Amazon reviewers have given it a five-star rating, with common feedback highlighting how lightweight it feels and how well it holds up to repeated traveling. One reviewer said, "It feels like it's floating," because it's so lightweight and easy to maneuver. The luggage is made of ABS plastic, which is more affordable but not quite as durable as other hard materials. The handle also felt flimsy, according to testers. That being said, it still held up well in Lab durability tests, showing some scratches but avoiding excessive denting.

What Amazon shoppers are saying: "The price is very reasonable for the quality of the luggage. I am also impressed with the durability of the luggage. I have used it for several months now and it is still in perfect condition."

Dimensions: 14.96" x 10.04" x 21.65" | Weight: 7.34 lbs | Material: ABS

Although weekender bags tend to be smaller than your average suitcase, they can still ring in high price tags. That's why our pros love Bagsmart's overnight bag that is under $35. Lightweight nylon fabric lets you easily tote this bag through train stations and airports. And if you arrive at your hotel early and can't check in just yet, you'll be able to feel relatively comfortable with this bag in hand or on your shoulders as you explore. Choose from two sizes (medium or large) and nine colors including pink (pictured), beige, black, dark blue and more. Some testers noted that the thinner material can show wear after a longer journey. Still, they were impressed by how much they could fit in the weekender and appreciated the spacious interior and exterior pockets for organization.

What Amazon shoppers are saying: "Perfect weekend travel bag. Put everything you need in this bag. It fit a 15-inch laptop, books, weekend clothing, toiletries and more."

Dimensions: 18.5" x 8.7" x 11" (medium); 21.3" x 8.7" x 12.6" (large) | Weight: 1.54 lbs (medium); 1.76 lbs (large) | Material: Nylon

American Tourister is one of our favorite brands for budget-friendly carry-on and checked bags. This carry-on will not only fit in the above storage unit, but will also look chic as you roll it onto the plane. We appreciate that it expands for more room as you need it , and that exterior and interior pockets help keep everything organized. Online shoppers love this sleek, easy-to-move suitcase, but note that the handle wasn't the best quality and felt a bit wobbly when using. For a lower price, slightly lower quality can be expected — but this carry-on still has a 4.5-rating across hundreds of reviews.

What Amazon shoppers are saying: "It was a perfect carry on. I was surprised by how much I managed to fit into it." And "The wheels were the best to maneuver, so smooth like velvet."

Dimensions: 14.5" x 9.5" x 23.5" | Weight: 6.8 lbs | Material: Polyester

Founded by a pilot, Travelpro makes luggage specifically for airline crew. Even if you don't travel for a living, the brand's softside luggage is a go-to recommendation in our Lab for its durability and features, like self-aligning wheels that can roll in any direction. Our experts also love the cushioned handle for added comfort and its tough, abrasion-resistant nylon fabric. This Amazon's Choice bag has a spacious interior that will fit your load and then some, plus a unique tie-down system with compression straps. Interior pockets and an included water-resistant toiletry bag will help keep your travel essentials organized. Note that our Lab pros found the suitcase to be on the heavier side, although that can be expected as softside suitcases tend to weigh more than hardside options due to the material.

What Amazon shoppers are saying: "I've had it for a few years... It looks really well built, high end, and I've received compliments from strangers."

" Dimensions: 28" in x 18.5" in x 11.75" | Weight: 9.8 lbs | Material: Nylon, leather

There are two kinds of travelers: those who strive for comfort and those who travel in style. This elegant suitcase grants you best of both worlds. Faux leather accents give it that extra charm and we like the durable shell that's designed to resist breaking. You'll benefit from multi-directional wheels and a wheel break system so your luggage doesn't roll away. When you open the bag, you'll find a luxurious interior with two large compartments equipped with straps as well as a removable hanger, laundry bag and shoe bag.

One GH expert owns the Chatelet and says it "fits everything I need for a short trip. The wheels are so smooth, and it’s a breeze to roll through the airport." Some online Amazon shoppers do note that the bag can show wear and recommend opting for a darker color like the featured chocolate beown to help avoid showing potential scratch marks.

What Amazon shoppers are saying: " It's gorgeous. Seriously. It is eye-catching and I get compliments on it every time I use it. My mom even bought a full set after she saw mine. And my daughter got the carry on for herself as well."

Dimensions: 20.25" x 9.5" x 14.25" | Weight: 9.3 lbs | Material: Polycarbonate, faux leather

Softside luggage is less rigid, which can make it easier to pack with more of your belongings and easier to store when you're not traveling. SwissGear's collection of soft luggage is popular on Amazon for being spacious and easy to maneuver. The front of this bag unzips to reveal one large inner compartment with tie straps to secure your things and two zippered mesh pockets for organization. Plus, it comes with a small wet bag for toiletries and there are two outer zip pockets for even more storage.

If you're prone to overpacking or want room for souvenirs, this bag expands an additional two inches for extra packing space. Amazon reviewers shared that they love the "smooth" wheels that they say are easy to maneuver. One went so far as to describe it as "the perfect luggage." However, some reviewers noted issues with the telescopic handle feeling flimsy and breaking with repeated use.

What Amazon shoppers are saying: "This bag is roomy enough that you’ll probably hit a weight limit before you run out of space. I use packing cubes and I’m able to run the two straps inside through the handles of the packing cubes to make sure everything is secure."

Dimensions: 26.25" x 11" x 16.75" | Weight: 9 lbs | Material: Polyester

At less than $150, this four-piece luggage set from Travelers Club is a total steal, and it has amassed over 13,000 five-star ratings on Amazon. The set comes with two rolling bags (a large checked bag and a carry-on bag), a tote and a small toiletry bag. The checked and carry-on bags are designed with two spacious compartments — one fully enclosed compartment and one with cross straps to keep belongings secure. An Amazon reviewer described the rolling bags as "huge" and added that there's tons of space for organizing.

The tote bag features a sleeve that slides onto the handle of the rolling bags, which makes getting all of your luggage through the airport so much easier. Plus, there are eight color options to choose from including tan, rose gold and lilac. Reviewers say the set is great for occasional travel, but the ABS material used for the rolling bags is prone to cracking with repeated use, so it may not work well for someone who travels regularly.

What Amazon shoppers are saying: "We needed these suitcases last minute for a trip since we packed too much and needed another large case. We even used the carry-on instead of our older set because the quality and look was very nice!"

Dimensions: 26" x 17.5" x 11" (large); 20" x 13" x 9.5" (carry-on); 10" x 15" x 5" (tote); 5" x 10" x 5" (toiletry bag) | Weight: 8.4 lbs (large); 7.2 lbs (carry-on); 1 lb (tote); 0.5 lbs (toiletry bag) | Material: ABS (rolling bags) and polyester (tote and toiletry bag)

An underseat suitcase is a great way to avoid added carry-on or baggage fees when traveling for a short trip. This bag from Samsonite will hold just enough clothing for a weekend getaway , and the front pocket features a laptop sleeve and a zipper compartment for additional storage. A built-in USB port (battery pack not included) means you'll never be stranded at the airport without a charged phone, and the back sleeve slides on top of a carry-on bag for easy transport.

Amazon reviewers say that the compact case fits perfectly under most airline seats and, although it's small, they love that it's designed with four wheels for easy movement. Plus, the polyester fabric used for Samsonite bags proved durable in our Lab tests, resisting damage from abrasion and rubbing. However some reviewers said the top strap is flimsy.

What Amazon shoppers are saying: "I had an overnight business trip and could not decide what to carry. After testing a variety of bags, I decided to go with this bag. I'm glad that I did. While there are nicer-looking bags like this, it was professional-looking enough for my business purposes."

Dimensions: 9" x 13.5" x 16.5" | Weight: 5.5 lbs | Material: Polyester

Herschel's bags, including its laptop bags , backpacks and duffels , are a favorite of Textiles Lab experts who are always impressed by the brand's quality and simple design. This duffel has a large compartment for belongings and a mesh pocket for organization. There's even an additional shoe compartment to keep your extra pair separated from the rest of your things. Choose between the carrying handles or padded shoulder strap. While it's perfectly sized for a weekend trip, it's not the ideal pick for a longer trip.

Reviews on Amazon highlight how durable the bag is — one reviewer said he uses the bag daily, tossing it around in his car, and it "doesn’t have one blemish or tear." The brand does offer other colors with faux leather detailing, but it's important to note that some reviews mention the faux leather peels with repeated use.

What Amazon shoppers are saying: "This is such an attractive bag! I’ve never owned any Herschel items but I’m glad I bought it for my 13 year old. It’s perfect for a few nights away from home!"

Dimensions: 11" x 20.5" x 12" | Weight: 2.23 lbs | Material: Polyester

Rockland Melbourne Hardside Expandable Luggage

Melbourne Hardside Expandable Luggage

Rockland's hardside expandable luggage has over 9,000 five-star reviews on Amazon highlighting the "sturdy" handle and "impressive" amount of space for packing. Inside the bag, you'll find two storage compartments — one compartment with cross straps to keep your things in place and one fully enclosed with a zippered panel. There's also an extra zippered storage bag inside.

Amazon reviewers share that there is plenty of room for all of their belongings, including heavier clothing like jackets, long-sleeve tops and pants. According to some reviews, the lightweight ABS material isn't the most durable and is prone to cracking, especially near the wheels. This model is available in large and medium checked bags, carry-on bags and two- and three-piece sets, and you can choose from over 19 colors.

What Amazon shoppers are saying: "One of the standout features is the smooth-rolling four-wheel system. Maneuvering through airports, train stations, and even uneven surfaces, like cobblestones, has been a breeze."

Dimensions: 17" x 12" x 28" | Weight: 11 lbs | Material: ABS

Matein Travel Laptop Backpack

Travel Laptop Backpack

It can be difficult to find a quality backpack on a budget, but this pick from Matein is less than $25 and is loved by over 80,000 reviewers who gave it five-star ratings on Amazon. Reviewers appreciate that the bag is designed with a lot of padding — both along the straps and around the laptop pocket. Also included in the design are a strap to secure the backpack on top of a carry-on, a hidden pocket to keep your things safe and a USB charging port (battery pack not included). Plus, it's filled with "so many nifty pockets" that make for easy organization, says one reviewer. Some reviewers mention zippers that come unzipped when the bag is packed full, so be sure not to overstuff.

What Amazon shoppers are saying: "Everything is easily accessible and nicely organized. My MacBook Air literally lives in this bag and has never been scratched or damaged."

Dimensions: 12" x 18" x 7.8" | Weight: 1.56 lbs | Material: Polyester

Level8 Grace Carry On Luggage

Grace Carry On Luggage

Making it through airport security is stressful enough. T hanks to Level8's carry-on bag with a convenient front laptop pocket, you can keep your laptop safe in your luggage . Two compartments inside — one with a zippered panel and one with cross straps — keep all of your belongings in place, and there's a TSA-approved lock for added security. If you need extra space, there's an expandable version too. Amazon reviewers say this suitcase is better than others they've used from more expensive, well-known brands. One review called it "perfect," and another said that the bag is "lightweight" and "well-built." The combination of ABS and polycarbonate material is more durable than ABS on its own, however some reviewers noted that the zipper pulls are prone to breakage.

What Amazon shoppers are saying: "I chose this one after searching long and, boy, did I make the right choice. This is absolutely prefect for what I was looking for. The hardshell is very sturdy and has reinforced corners, which is great. The laptop space can open partially or fully, based on the Velcro sides."

Dimensions: 14.5" x 9.4" x 21.8" | Weight: 10.36 lbs | Material: Polycarbonate/ABS composite

Vera Bradley Hardside Rolling Suitcase

This stylish yet durable Vera Bradley bag is perfect for anyone who sees luggage as an accessory. In Textiles Lab tests, it was a top-performer, proving to be drop-, scratch- and water-resistant. Some testers who rolled this bag through our obstacle course thought the handle felt flimsy, but liked how well it performed overall, agreeing that the wheels rolled smoothly and that it was easy to maneuver. The inner compartments are spacious, and it's lightweight, making traveling with it a breeze.

What Amazon shoppers are saying: "It took me a very long time to find this great of a carry-on bag. It seemed a little expensive for a carry-on, however the quality and beauty of it made up for that."

Dimensions: 10" x 14" x 22" | Weight: 9.18 lbs | Material: Polycarbonate

How we choose the best luggage on Amazon

linebreak

The product testing pros in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab spent months evaluating luggage with standardized test methods and Lab equipment. We then set up an obstacle course for users to test out the luggage. For this article, we combined our categorical expertise with feedback from Amazon reviewers to choose the best luggage on Amazon. Here are some of the characteristics we take into consideration:

a gh analyst zipping a suitcase on a counter

✔️ Size and weight : We weigh each piece of empty luggage to validate that the weight listed online is correct; we've found the listed specs are not always accurate. If the luggage is considered "carry-on" size, we place it into a 22 x 14 x 9-inch area to ensure it complies with TSA regulations.

✔️ Packing capabilities and ease of use: Textiles Lab pros fill each suitcase with a standard load, including clothes, shoes and toiletries. While packing the luggage, we rate how easy the luggage is to open and close, how well the zippers work and whether or not a standard load of clothing fits inside. We also consider how other design features, like wheels, telescopic handles and locks, operate. Once the bag has been packed, we ask consumer testers to roll it over different surfaces such as tile, wood flooring and carpet and lift it up onto countertops to test the carrying handles.

a suitcase loaded in our drop tester for luggage testing

✔️ Drop durability : We place the packed luggage in our drop tester (pictured here), which releases the luggage from a set 3-foot height, allowing us to analyze any imperfections that occur as a result, including dents or cracking.

lab analyst operating equipment to measure abrasion

✔️ Abrasion resistance: If the luggage is softside, we cut out swatches of fabric to place in our abrasion machine, which rubs the fabric 15,000 times with an abrasive material. Once the abrasion test is complete, we grade the luggage fabric for signs of wear, like fiber pilling or holes (pictured here).

✔️ Scratch resistance : We drag a wire over the surface of hardside luggage and visually evaluate any scuffs or damage left behind.

✔️ Water resistance : After placing blotting paper inside the suitcase, we pour water onto the luggage zippers and then measure how much water has seeped through to the inside.

a good housekeeping tester rolling a suitcase through our luggage obstacle course

✔️ Consumer tests: It's important to mimic real use when evaluating luggage, so we set up an obstacle course in the Lab and have consumer testers run through the course. They then rate the luggage for subjective characteristics like ease of using the handles, wheel performance, overall maneuverability and sturdiness. The obstacle course includes rolling the luggage over different types of flooring, moving it through twists and turns, lifting it over curbs and more.

29 Suitcases, Duffels, Backpacks, And Other Bags That Reviewers Used To Carry On Only

After all, who wants to kick off their European summer dragging an enormous roller bag on cobblestone streets and up quaint sets of stairs. No one.

Elizabeth Lilly

BuzzFeed Staff

1. A  waterproof travel backpack  with allllll sorts of things that you could possibly want in a travel backpack, including a "wet bag" so you can take a last-minute dip in the hotel rooftop pool and then put your wet swimsuit in the backpack before heading to the airport.

Reviewer carrying white backpack with front pocket and water bottle side sleeve in an airport

Promising review: "I recently took a cross-country flight with my three kids. I really didn't want to worry about checked bags getting lost, so maximizing our carry-ons was a priority. This backpack fits an unfathomable amount of stuff! Lots of zippers and compartments for everything from shoes to laptops/iPads, easy access compartments for cell phones and boarding passes, I fit tons of neatly folded clothes. The best part was that fully loaded it easily slid under the seat." — Kindle Customer

Get it from Amazon for $33.99+  (available in two sizes and 42 styles).

2. A genius personal item suitcase  with *removable wheels* to help you fit all sorts of Draconian personal-item and carry-on restrictions. Ahem, Frontier.

a reviewer photo of the suitcase showing the built-in locking mechanism

Take OFF luggage is a small biz.

Promising review: "I refuse to pay the outrageous cost of checking a bag or carry-on. Once you take the wheels off this fits perfectly into the sizing thing for Frontier so I don't have to pay anything. Fits quite a bit of stuff in it as well. So far I've used it on a foujr-day trip to California and a three-day trip to Las Vegas. We are going on a 10-day trip to Puerto Rico soon on Frontier and again, I don't want to pay for bags so made sure to book a place with washer/dryer otherwise this would probably be too small for 10 days." — S. Denzel

Get it from Amazon for  $119.99  (available in four colors)

3. A super roomy  duffel bag  that's durable enough to toss around from home to car trunk to bus to wherever. It's water-resistant and can hook onto a rolling stuitcase. And if you take a last-min dip into the lake at that picturesque lake house your pal's aunt owns? Np. You can put your wet swimsuit in one of the separating compartments.

It's water-resistant and has an adjustable long strap.

Promising review: "This bag is AMAZING! If you are trying to maximize your carry-on game by not checking luggage, I believe this is the largest 'personal item' available. This has a zippered pocket for wet items making it the perfect pool bag. I was impressed with the interior pockets, the ability to slide this bag onto my carry-on roller luggage with ease etc. This was PERFECT for traveling with a young child. I packed for me and our 3-year-old in my carry-on AND this item, and I was able to avoid checking anything. Love the color! Quality is excellent. Buy the bag!" — Courtney

Get it from Amazon for $19.99+ (available in a variety of colors).

4. A weekender bag  with tons of bells and whistles you'd normally pay much more for — reviewers compare it to the viral Beis weekender. Since we started writing about this bag I've seen so many fellow airplane passengers boarding with this as a personal item. And not ONCE have I seen them have trouble with a gate agent regarding sizing.

It comes in two sizes: one sized for a personal item, and one for a carry-on.

Promising review: "BUY NOW! BEST TRAVEL BAG! BEIS [swap]! This bag is great! Literally don’t hesitate on buying it!! I have traveled on Frontier, Spirit, Jet Blue, all no problem fit inside the bag measuring size perfectly! BEST PART I traveled a lot this summer, to Mexico, Nicaragua, and Jamaica, all for 5–6 days, all my stuff fit in perfectly!! I had three JEANS, two SHORTS, seven TOP, five bathing suits, two sandals, one pair of flip-flops and three makeup bags, plus a charger on the side pockets! If you want to travel on a budget this bag is your best friend. Plus the bag is super sturdy and great material with strong zippers." — Franyeska Pravia

Get it from Amazon for $28.99+ (available in two sizes and 25 colors).

5. A 14-inch and 20-inch carry-on set  you can use together or separately on a flight with stringent bag policies. (Or even use the 20-inch yourself and then give your kid the 14-inch). Gotta love having options!

Somago is a small biz specializing in luggage.

Promising review: "Bought this after committing to traveling only with a carry-on. I didn’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on a carry-on, but I also didn’t want to go too low and the product faulty. I found this to be a happy medium. It survived the streets of Greece, hills, rough and uneven terrain, ferries, stairs, and plane rides. The wheels offer a smooth ride. I stuffed it to the max with 24 lbs worth of clothing (for reference). I did use packing cubes on one side, though. Zipper handled it well, and the case held its shape. Overall, a great buy and highly recommend." — SR

Get them from Amazon for $89.99+ (available in seven colors).

6. A colorful hard-side roller suitcase  that lots of reviewers say is super sturdy and will easily fit in planes' overhead bins. (Psst, if you're looking for a similar vibe to the pricier Away, this could be it.)

Person standing with green carry-on luggage, wearing ripped jeans and ankle boots

Promising review: "Bought this with the 35L Open Story Backpack , and they couldn’t have been a better pair for a better value! Used them both as carry-on and personal item for a week vacation on an island!" —Anonymous

Get it from Target for $71.99 (available in six colors).

7. And the coordinating 35L backpack  you could feasibly use as your *only* item for a trip. Lots of reviewers did! It opens up like a rolling suitcase for easy access.

Open suitcase with clothes and items, suggesting packing for a trip. Ideal for travel prep articles

Promising review: “ Took this as my sole bag for two weeks in Europe and it held out amazing.  Fits neatly under the seat in front of me in my flight and holds a ridiculous amount of stuff. Very sturdy zippers and seams. A little uncomfortably on the shoulders when loaded heavy but manageable.” — Lg

Get it from Target for $39.99+ (available in four colors).

8. A Samsonite wheeled carry-on bag small enough to qualify as a personal item on super strict airlines. It can fit underneath an airplane seat! You can avoid checking a bag, glide through security, *and* don't have to hurt your shoulder by carrying a duffel bag that'd also fit strict bag measurement policies. Take that, Spirit Airlines. (This'll pay for itself after a few trips.)

reviewer's pic of suitcase open so you can see a large mesh pocket and large compartment

Now you won't even have to pull your suitcase outta the overhead!

Promising review : "Great piece of luggage. I've been trying to 'one bag' with only a backpack that fits under the seat as a personal item on US domestic flights, but on occasion, I'll need to 'two bag' (still not checking any bags) with one personal item and one overhead. This Samsonite under seat carry-on can actually fit under the seat as well , but if I need a carry-on, I like having an easy time storing in / retrieving from the overhead bin next to those obnoxious or first-time-flyer idiots who bring a massively oversized carry-on (and how did they get past the flight attendants and the gate check'?) trying to cram their bag into the bin. It also fits into the older planes with tiny overhead compartments like the CRJ900. Definitely recommend." — Anonymous Reader

Get it from Amazon for $104.76 .

9. A Beis backpack  that zips open like a suitcase without *looking* like one of those backpacks that do that. I used this and a space vac bag to pack ALL my belongings for my Iceland trip instead of paying $100 to check a bag. (That's how the discount airlines get you!)

open backpack stuffed full of things for a long weekend.

I snagged this backpack after hearing my colleague Chelsea Stuart sing its praises. I had a trusty (now discontinued) InCase backpack I used as a personal item and served me well on dozens of trips for about five years. But I wanted a bag that opens up like a suitcase for easier packing. Since buying, I've taken it on countless weekends and international trips. Including, like I said up there ^, to Iceland with just this and a space vac bag full of clothes.

Inside, you'll find a mesh zippered pocket and a plastic pocket perfect for your toiletries. I can fit enough wet toilet toiletries in the second pocket as I'd be allowed to carry on for a plane. In the mesh pocket I put other necessities like cotton swabs, medicine, eyeglasses, etc. The main compartment is deceptively deep so you can easily roll clothes and Lego-fit them in together without using packing cubes. In fact, I fit all of the stuff in the second picture in that section (a romper, PJs, a bikini, sunscreen, five pairs of undies, a pair of jean shorts, nap dress, three pairs of socks, two pairs of sandals, two T-shirts, a slip skirt, sleep mask, curling iron, mini flat iron, makeup bag, and tote bag). AND it has stretchy X-straps to keep it all secure like you'd see in a roller suitcase so when I unzip it, everything stays put.  But before I forget, there's a separate cushioned laptop pocket close to the backpack straps that I found works well for books or a Kindle if your travel leaves you laptop-less.

I love that this backpack has DEEP side pockets so your umbrella or water bottle won't fall out. In fact, I stuck a flashlight and an umbrella in one side pocket. (You could  always  use a flashlight.)  Plus! It has a generously sized pocket on the front of the backpack with easy access for sunglasses, snacks, writing pens...all sorts of those little extras you need to access quickly. To top it all off, the backpack straps and top handle are STURDY. I felt totally secure toting it around and slinging it into overhead storage compartments on the trains. I love the look and construction of it with faux leather and sturdy black canvas, and the trolley passthrough to easily fit on my roller suitcase I'm about to drag through a bunch of airports. At nearly $80, this isn't the cheapest backpack option but if you're a frequent traveler, you'll get so much mileage on it and seriously save on some baggage fees, making it well worth the cost. This backpack and I are going places, for sure. And if something ever happens to it — though I highly doubt it because it's SO sturdy — I'll 100% buy another. I'm obsessed!

Get it from Beis Travel for $88 (available in eight colors).

10. Plus a  Beis carry-on roller suitcase  with tons of bells and whistles, including a TSA lock, 360-degree wheels, a cushioned trolley handle, side-carry handle with a weight detector, AND a retractable attachable bag strap. I own this and have basically darted through airports totally smooth to get to my boarding gate.

Person packing a suitcase with clothes, binoculars, and hiking boots for a trip

Like I already said, I own this and have been using it for about six months after I broke a wheel on a Samsonite suitcase that, tbh, I totally treated like it was a rental car. I most recently took it on a 10-day trip to Paris, Bologna, and Milan, which entailed me flying three times. I was able to fit all my stuff (with extra room!) in this and my beloved  Beis backpack , using the trolley pass for my backpack over the top handle for this suitcase for super easy airport navigation. The wheels are the smoothest of any suitcase I've ever used, and I'm able to glide around the airport around slow walkers, families taking up way too much room, and people who've apparently never been to an airport before. This suitcase also comes with two opaque bags that are great for dirty laundry, and the zip-closed side has a clear pocket where I like to stash my  Apple AirTag  so I can quickly check that, yep, it's in my suitcase. The straps on the other side makes it easy to pack in stuff without haveing to expand the zipper to allow for more room. (On my most recent trip I packed TWO midi-length coats in addition to the one I wore on the plane.) Even though I travel about every chance I get (these days I'm on a plane nearly every month), I think I'm going to be able to get a very long stretch use out of this beaut!

Get it from Beis Travel for $218 (available in 12 colors).

11. A  compact wheeled carry-on bag  small enough to qualify as a personal item on those budget airlines that float to the top of Google Flights results bc of their "personal-item-only" budget ticket prices. This'll really stick it to 'em!

A blue bag placed under an airplane seat, with a person wearing black shoes

Promising review : "I bought my bag September 2022 for Hawaii. Airlines loose so much luggage, I wanted to only bring one bag. I bring five pairs of shoes and two outfits a day. Always travel with two large suitcases AND a carry-on. Did not think I could do it. I got eight days of clothing in this bag, airline-approved size toiletries, my medications, my camera, AND my travel CPAP machine in this bag. I only took one pair of shoes, which were the ones I was wearing. Incredible!! Going back to Hawaii this October and am taking my bag again. I can not believe I got everything I needed in this bag. LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!!!" — J. P. Delano

Get it from Amazon for $48+ (available in three colors).

12. A Lo & Sons Catalina Supreme tote  in a waxed eco-friendly poly that'll look SO slick as you're able to pack so much stuff into this personal item–size beaut. Reviewers love it for work trips bc of its great padded laptop sleeve. And don't even get me STARTED on those compartments at the bottom.

Green travel bag with open compartment and adjustable dividers

Promising review: "I have been using the weekender for a few years now, but with increased work travel I needed something that could hold my laptop too. It has so many neat pockets inside, perfect for water bottles, keys, wallet, sunglasses, as well as sanitizer, and other personal items. I have been able to use it as my personal item on 13 flights in the last two months, which has enabled me to avoid checking a bag. The fabric is high quality, and it stands up by itself. 10/10 in love with the quality, design, and practicality." — Leila H.

Get it from Lo & Sons for $298 (also available in black).

13. A 26-liter Calpak Duffel  in a water-resistant recycled ripstop vinyl, with compression straps, padded carrying straps, *and* a clamshell opening to help you squeeze in all sorts of necessities (and just-wants) for your adventures.

green backpack with pouches open to show storage

My colleague Chelsea Stuart owns and loves this beaut:

If you wanna talk about a ludicrously capacious bag, this right here is the winner!! I bought a basic economy ticket — with no baggage allowance other than a personal item — and managed to fit enough in here for an 8-day trip that included London, Oxford, and Edinburgh. I wore it as a backpack the whole time, but it does have adjustable straps that turn it into a duffel bag. It also has a number of carrying handles, a luggage trolley sleeve, a laptop pocket, an interior compression strap, a clamshell opening (so it opens just like a suitcase!) and, one of the best features — imo — a ripstop polyester shell (it's made from 27 recycled water bottles). I stuffed this sucker with not only my clothes and toiletries but a whole bunch of souvenirs on the way home and there was no ripping of seams or weird noises that made me think my bag might explode at any moment. Oh and the juniper color is just 😍.

Promising review : "I recently used this bag for a trip to Florida and managed to pack so many outfits. It worked as a personal item so I didn’t have to pay for luggage. Not to mention, this bag had so many pockets. Definitely purchase if you’re on the fence." — Alyssa C.

Get it from Calpak for $175 (available in 9 colors).

14. A  40-liter travel backpack  big enough to hold a GIANT 40-ounce water bottle. (No more paying for airport water!) Plus it has a great clamshell opening and handy pockets.

My colleague Jessica Hall used this (and the next suitcase) for a 10-day trip where she carried on only. Here's what she has to say:

"I have been searching for the perfect travel backpack for a long time. I had found some I liked, but the zipper broke and it wouldn't fit my water bottle, so I needed to find a replacement. This bag has it all  — it fits a 40-oz water bottle , it has straps to tighten the sides and make it not as bulky, it opens all the way for easy access so you don't have to shove your hand all the way down to the bottom, it has a ton of small pockets for everything you could ever want and has a padded laptop sleeve . I was able to cram SO MUCH stuff into this thing, and it saved me the hassle of TSA pulling everything out when they pulled it aside for deeper inspection."

Promising review:  "This is a great bag. Exactly what I was looking for. It's lightweight enough yet sturdier than expected. I like the fact that it's rip stop material. The zippers are heavy duty. The adjustable water bottle cage is a great feature. Even has a cinch strap in the event it's a taller bottle. The storage pockets are very usable and multifunctional. The laptop sleeve is well padded without being too thick. I bought the version that comes with three packing cubes so if my bag is opened at customs they don't have to touch all my personal items and things won't fall out. I bought this for all kinds of travel; weekends at the coast, a week in Mexico and possibly even a two week trip to Europe next year. That's the plan. There are straps with buckles on either side so the bag can be compressed if need be or you can tether a jacket or travel blanket to the outside. I'm very pleased with this item." — SLR

15. A lightweight TravelPro 21-inch roller suitcase  with four wheels that has lots of backpack-to-roller bag converts in the reviews. FYI, lots of flight crews use this beloved brand's luggage!

Travelpro luggage featuring ergonomic handle, durable zipper pulls, and 360-degree wheels for mobility

Promising review: "On my last two-week trip to Europe I took a backpack-type Patagonia Black Hole 40L bag, and got tired of lugging it during airport transfers. So, for the latest trip, again for two weeks in September 2023, I wanted to try this highly rated bag with wheels. My goal is always not to check a bag , so my main concern is that this bag wouldn't hold enough stuff versus the Black Hole to make it for two weeks to make a wheeled bag worth trying. I packed perhaps one less sweater, a pair of pants, and socks, which was about the space compromise for the wheels. The ease of use of this bag in airports, on trains, in subways, and during accommodation transfers made it well worth packing fewer clothes. I'm a four-wheeled bag convert, and will leave the backpack bags to youth hostel college kids. " — Gracer

Get it from Amazon for $144.49 (available in 13 colors and other sizes).

16. A weekender bag can easily slide over the handle of your wheeled suitcase in case you're in the market for a new personal item. (It'll also fit under an airplane seat, according to reviewers.) Though SOME reviewers have traveled abroad with *just* this as their suitcase!

reviewer's striped weekender bag with a loop that fits onto the handles of a rolling suitcase

Promising review: " I take this to Europe for 2–4 weeks. It fits ALL my clothes. This is the only luggage I need. The bag is sturdy and, most importantly, the handles are extended and sewn in all the way to the bottom to avoid tearing. It is heavy canvas so that it can be washed. It has so many interior and exterior pockets and an extension strap. It also has a wide independent outside pocket strap that can be used to attach this bag to a carry-on handle. It fits perfectly under the aircraft seat. No more overhead compartment placement or hard case under the seat (I used an American Tourister compact under-seat carry-on for years prior to purchasing this one). This bag is soft yet expandable." — Diana

Get it from Amazon for $34.99+ (available in 20 colors/patterns).

17. A smart carry-on  with an ejectable battery, a crush-proof shell, and plenty of room inside so you'll get away with carrying on only without LOOKING like you only packed four outfits. The ultimate goal!

the pink suitcase

July is a Melbourne, Australia–based startup committed to making stylish and sustainable luggage. Their featherlight carry-on includes aluminum bumpers, a telescopic handle, an integrated TSA lock, and a hidden laundry bag.

Promising review : "I have used this twice so far for international travel and love it. I like to carry on everything leaving and check the bag returning. I was able to fit everything. I also appreciate the interior details to keep things organized. I hope the wheels continue to hold up to cobblestone streets." — Jamie D.

Get it from July for $295+ (available in 9 colors and with or without personalization).

18. A Dagne Dover carryall duffel bag with a TON of devoted fans for good reason. It helps you stay *very* organized and fit in a lot of items in a super tiny space that's even small enough to shove under an airplane seat.

the bag

My colleague Emma McAnaw owns this very bag and raves about it. Here's what she has to say: "I use this every time I travel — and I never, I mean NEVER, check bags. I even took this with me to Amsterdam and easily packed about four sweaters, DOC MARTENS, and all my undies and toiletries. To be fair I wore the same pants for four days (I am cheap, guys), but I never felt like I needed more space. And yes — even Spirit lets me take this."

Promising review : "I love this bag for travel. Size-wise, it's acceptable as a carry-on, and I've even brought this bag with my roll aboard and had no problems with Alaska or American Airlines. It's pushing the limits on your second personal item, but as long as you don't stuff it too full, you should be okay. This bag has pockets on all sides, a really nice shoe bag and a small zippered pouch that I keep my Lululemon travel shawl in. The grey neoprene is really nice, and I get lots of compliments. It is prone to picking up dirt marks, so you need to be careful about putting it on the ground or shoving it anywhere that might be dirty." — CdnNordyFan

Get it from Nordstrom for $215 (available in four colors).

19. A 44-liter compression carry-on backpack I just saw a friend carrying on a month-long European trip to lots of success. She had lots of cute outfits all packed into this beaut! Psst, if 44 liters is *too* big, it will also work for 38 liters!

the backpack zipped up

It has a removable waist strap for stability, adjustable backpack straps, and is waterproof! Plus, it can expand to fit 44L of capacity, but can compress to fit 38L.

Promising review : "I just got back from a nine-day trip backpacking Europe and could not be happier about this backpack. When first ordering, I was worried that the backpack would not have enough room and the overall quality of the bag would not be as good as others, it turns out I had nothing to worry about. By rolling my clothes up,  I could fit everything , including two pairs of jeans, nine T-shirts, one long sleeve shirt, one down jacket, two basketball shorts, one belt, one beanie, six boxers, six pairs of socks, a hefty cable bag, a 12-inch laptop, sandals, and toiletries. There was actually still room for more! I had no issue bringing this as a carry-on and storing it in the upper bins of British Airways and Aer Lingus flights." — ast89

Get it from Amazon for $69.99 (available in four colors).

20. A 26-liter Lo & Sons ~deluxe~ backpack  with a removable organizational insert so you can not only FIT all of your stuff, but then also FIND It.

Top view of an open, organized backpack with various compartments storing tech and personal items

Promising review: "There are a ton of pockets and each is so thoughtful. The best feature is the capacity. I recently went on a long weekend trip and was bent on not checking a bag. I ended up fitting so much in the Hanover Deluxe. It was filled to the brim — yet still fit under my seat on the plane. I’m a small person with a small frame, and the backpack is lightweight and easy to carry. Saw other reviews about the fabric, seems durable enough (it is stiff but fine), and I suppose it is a preference. I hope the bag will hold up over time, but in the meantime, I’m happy with my purchase." —Jen

Get it from Lo & Sons for $115.70 (available in three colors).

21. A 20-inch hard-side suitcase with a compartment on the front perfect for your laptop, iPad, or important travel documents to easily and quickly access. Oh, and there's a TSA lock!

Blue hard-shell suitcase with wheels and extending handle, depicted upright

Promising review: " This luggage gives me everything I need to travel for weeks with only my carry-on suitcase . I especially like keeping my laptop and travel documents readily available in the front drop-down compartment. And it practically floats across the floor with its super, well-constructed wheels." — Estela VG

Get it from Amazon for $129.99+  (available in five colors and in other sizes).

22. A 14-inch hard-side spinner suitcase  perfect for kids *or* when you are NOT paying to carry on a bag.

Promising review: "I bought this for a trip from Las Vegas to Chicago to visit my grandparents. I never check bags in and typically just pack everything in a backpack, but nope, not this time. After doing some research and finding out that some airlines charge for backpacks if they decide they are too big, I got TSA to find the dimensions of the under-seat and overhead compartments so I would not have to pay any fees while traveling. We'll this litte green luggage fit all those. I was to pack more than what I typically do in my backpack, including my work computer and charger. This rolls very well and doesn't weigh much when packed. It did get thrown around in the back of my truck when on the way to the airport, and I haven't noticed any damage from the three-hour drive to Las Vegas. I did like how on the zipper there is a built-in lock but I didn't use it. I'll try it on my return flight. So far, this thing has been awesome." — Sourdoughy

Get it from Amazon for $99.99+ (available in eight colors).

23. A TravelPro deluxe tote  reviewers love for quick access to travel documents, books, and other things you might need in-flight — all while meeting tight carry-on and personal-item restrictions on a multitude of airlines.

Promising review: "I bought this bag to ensure I had enough carry-on luggage space to pack for a week-long trip without having to check a bag. The bag is well made and should last a lifetime." — RWiser577

Get it from Amazon for $97.49+  (available in four colors).

24. A 20-inch collapsible rolling suitcase for easier squeezing into sizers and, when you're unfortunately stuck at home getting your money's worth on rent, taking up very little storage room.

Promising review: "I just dragged this bag all over Portugal for nine days. I am extremely satisfied with it! When I travel, I bring carry-on only. Every airline has different carry-on size limits. Tap Air Portugal has one of the lower size limits. This bag is well within their guidelines. It’s also the most lightweight bag I have found on the market, which is great, because the agent weighed my carry-on before I got on the plane. This lightweight bag saved me! The two non-swivel wheels navigated the rough, uneven cobblestone streets with ease. I did pick it up by the handle on occasion, when things got extremely rough, as I didn’t want to take a chance of breaking a wheel. The light weight of this bag made carrying it a breeze, and the handle held up well.

Update: I used this bag for an 11-day trip through Ireland in June. I walked a lot in Dublin, pulling this behind me (I like to walk). I also used it on a couple of weekend trips. This bag is still going strong. No damage or wear." — Scout

Get it from Amazon for $54.97+ (available in four colors).

Promising review: "I love love loved this set!! I travel a lot, so having a bag that I can use as a personal and don’t have to purchase a bag has been AMAZING!! I just pop the wheels off and put them inside or in my pocket. The other bags are bigger than I would’ve expected. The toiletries bag is extremely spacious. And the carry-on bag extends if you want. Overall great purchase!" — Taylor

Olympia U.S.A. is a small biz specializing in luggage.

Promising review: "Light, easy-to-handle carry-on bag.  Bought it and immediately took it half way around the world to Spain. It was my only bag for 10-day vacation. The pockets were perfect for the things I needed to pull out for TSA and International Security. One or two of our flights asked that we check the bags. It made it back to me in perfect condition. Very durable and sturdy. It did sustain some black marks that I need to try to clean off. But I travel a lot and I'm all-around pleased with this bag! I'll use it often." — Cathryn J.

BoardingBlue is a small biz specializing in compact luggage.

Promising review: "It worked out perfectly. No hassles at security or at boarding. Everyone looked at it and recognized its size, so there were no questions. I had bought the 'economy' flight and was not allowed to bring a carry-on, only a personal bag that fit under the seat. This one held all my makeup, hair products, a change of clothes, a portable paint set, and several books. Not to mention a hat, gloves, snacks, and other little items. Couldn't have survived without it!" — Caron

29. And if you'd REALLY like to game the system: A  neck pillow you can stuff with clothing — even a whole outfit — to give you some comfy flexibility and help get around super strict carry-on size restrictions. The listing says you can even pack three days' worth of clothes in it! Which would especially be welcome if your carry-on-only budget doesn't exactly align with your fashionista status.

Check out a TikTok showing how someone used a similar neck pillow  to just take that and a personal item onto a RyanAir flight that was charging for hand luggage.

Promising review: "Took it on my trip to Europe. I went carry-on-only and this tube was a true gem! I fit one full outfit in it and it’s so valuable when traveling with only carry-on luggage. On the plane I used it as an arm support. It’s really helpful on a 10-hour flight. What an excellent idea to take something out of the weighted luggage!!! I was able to fit three T-shirts, two light long-sleeve sweatshirts, and one pair of underwear. I usually like to have a change of clothes with me on the plane, especially on transatlantic flights, so I can change it on the layover, just feels fresher." — Happy Shopper

Garment Travel Bags for Your Gowns, Suits, and More

S ome trips require little else other than a few lightweight two-piece sets or revealing bathing suits . Then you have vacations or work trips that mean you have to bring along a few dressier clothes. You could roll your blazers, nice dresses, and trousers in packing cubes, but that will most likely result in a wrinkly mess.

Instead, a garment travel bag is the perfect solution to keep your nicer clothes as wrinkle-free as possible. The clothes remain on a hanger and aren’t as compact as they normally would be in a suitcase or carry-on bag. Here are a few garment bags perfect for travel that range from spacious interiors to 2-in-1 convertible styles.

Modoker Convertible Garment Bag

This isn’t your ordinary duffel bag. The exterior looks like your standard duffel and there’s even a separate shoe compartment. However, once you unzip the bag, it folds completely flat into a hanging garment bag. Use this space for your suit or gowns. The interior even has a few pockets and additional storage for other clothes or accessories. Zip this back up into the duffel shape and carry it via the adjustable strap or handles.

2-in-1 Luggage Garment Bag

Here’s another convertible style, but this is truly two for the price of one. The duffel is made of water-resistant material and is spacious enough for several outfits or a few of your favorite packing cubes. There’s also a separate garment bag that wraps around the exterior of the duffel. There are a few snap closures to keep the two separate pieces as a cohesive set. Carry these pieces together or separately, depending on your trip.

Amazon Basics Tri-Fold Garment Bag

This basic garment bag is spacious and has useful interior organization. It easily holds up to three of your suits or dresses and keeps them wrinkle-free. The side also has a mesh pocket for smaller items like ties or accessories. Its bi-fold design even has an exterior pocket with slots for your laptop, noise-canceling headphones, or pens.

Carry-On Garment Suit Bag

Some garment bags can lack structure, making them annoying to carry but also causing wrinkles in your clothes. For a bag that has a bit more structure, try this affordable option that has a 40L capacity. You’ll fit several suits and dresses in the zippered space. There are a few internal and side pockets for small items. The rectangular style fits easily in many spaces and also has a back trolley sleeve that goes over your suitcase handle.

 ITIEZY Garment Duffel Bag

Whether you’re traveling for work or a destination wedding, this duffel bag looks great and keeps your outfits organized. The faux leather has a luxe look and the interior unzips to reveal a garment bag. Secure your clothes via the hangers and there are several zippered compartments for smaller items or accessories. The garment duffel even comes with a toiletry bag and laptop sleeve.
