Balmoral – Britain’s Famous Pleasure Steamer

Great news.

The National Lottery Heritage Fund has awarded a grant of £248,318 for MV Balmoral Fund’s project  “Save MV Balmoral for Bristol and Beyond” – with permission to start. Thanks to National Lottery players this is a tribute to hard work put in by volunteers, partners and trustees since the ship last sailed. With support from loyal donors we have, together, kept our ship maintained, actively alive and welcoming as a visible, well-used asset to Bristol and its heritage harbour.

The grant covers funding that will allow us to increase Balmoral’s use and interest for people and events; in inspiring education and in reaching less advantaged communities.

A major part of the grant will be used for dry-docking the ship at the Albion Yard, Bristol.  Whilst there, authorised work will check, repair and replace elements needed for under-water integrity of the ship for at least another 5 years.

And it will assist in updating the effectiveness of the charity and the volunteers so important to the management of preserving this wonderful ship – and boosting enthusiasm and potential investment for her future.

Activities and events for the project are revving up and more detail will be published. Open days and Music Nights are regular dates. Balmoral’s teams will be leading community events on the water for Bristol’s Harbour Festival. And we will of course – near the end of June – be celebrating Balmoral’s 75th birthday in style!

Pending general refreshment of this website, please check for events on Balmoral’s Facebook page .

Can You Support Us?

DONATIONS WILL HELP US TO MATCH-FUND THE GRANT. YOUR HELP COULD EVEN BROADEN THE WORK WE CAN ACHIEVE WHILST BALMORAL’S IN THE DRY-DOCK.

Ways of donating / information on Gift Aid etc are described on our secure website page for donations .

Beautiful ship and fantastic tours - loved the engine room!

Southville, Bristol

Wildlife spotting was sublime from the ship, porpoises, dolphins, seals, seabirds, stunning views of the Channel and islands, (Steep & Flat Holm) Exmoor Coast and the Great Hangman. Brass band playing, happy crew and passengers!

A stunning ship with rich history, a crying shame, it's now unique!

Beautiful ship, hope to sail on her to Penarth again soon. Good luck with funding.

A pleasure to finally see inside. The smell of the engine room was fantastic!

Balmoral arriving into Olden

Balmoral is the smallest ship in our fleet and is well-loved by all of our teams, and long-standing guests. She has wonderful facilities - six beautiful restaurants, seven bars and lounges, two pools and lovely wide open decks which are perfect for when Balmoral is scenic cruising.

The Spey and Avon restaurants offer spectacular views out to sea while you dine, and the Observatory Lounge really comes to life with our Signature Experiences of scenic cruising, or our Ship at Sea sessions.

Her smaller size is a huge asset when it comes to creating itineraries that go off the beaten track and into less visited ports and waterways. Balmoral journeys along rivers and right into the heart of cities such as Bordeaux, or transits through spectacular waterways like the Kiel Canal.

Balmoral 's crest proudly replicates the British royal family's Scottish residence Balmoral Castle, with a nod to Fred. Olsen's historic links with Scotland and where the family still have an estate today.

What are the dining times / restaurant opening hours?

balmoral boat trips

Our on board restaurants provide a wide range of delicious and freshly cooked meals, so we offer a selection of dining options throughout the day to suit you.

Breakfast :

Normally served between 7.30 and 10.30am in the main restaurants and casual dining venues.

Normally served between 12.00 and 2.00pm in the main restaurants and casual dining venues.

Afternoon Tea:

Each day, complimentary afternoon tea is served between 3.45 and 4.45pm in the buffet service restaurant, with sandwiches, savouries, scones and cakes, along with fresh tea and coffee.*

*Please note this is not the Tradtional Premium Afternoon Tea service, which is available on selected days in the Observatory for just £13 per person.

Please request either the first or second seating (6.15pm or 8.30pm) when you make your booking. You can also request your preferred table, but we can’t always guarantee this.

Your restaurant seating card will be in your room when you board, which confirms your table number and dining time. This will be your allocated table for the duration of your cruise.

Please note that evening dining times may vary on our One Night Cruises.

Casual Dining:

A buffet-style breakfast, lunch and dinner will also be served in the Palms Café ( Balmoral) The View and The Poolside ( Bolette and Borealis ).

For those guests requiring a more casual dinner option, The View and Palms Cafés will be open from 6.30pm to 9.00pm. Dining at the Poolside ( Bolette and Borealis ) is available throughout the day between 10.00am and 7.00pm.

On some nights, we have themed dining evenings in the buffet restaurants. These evenings are often very popular so we recommend you book in advance to secure a table.

Speciality Dining:

For an even more indulgent and memorable dining experience, each ship in the Fred. Olsen fleet offers speciality dining in an exclusive venue. Vasco  and  Colours & Tastes take inspiration from traditional Indian cuisine and modern Asian Fusion dining.

Our speciality dining venues are open from 6pm on the days advertised in The Daily Times.

You can pre-book speciality dining via My Cruises from 13 weeks and up to 24 hours before departure, for £10pp. If you'd like to book once on board, speciality dining will be charged to your on board account at £15pp.

What style of dining should I expect on board?

balmoral boat trips

Each of our ships feature a selection of stylish dining venues, all serving a range of indulgent, expertly-prepared dishes. At breakfast, lunch and dinner, you’ll always find delicious treats which will tempt your taste buds. And, as all food is included on your cruise, you can indulge as much or as little as you like.

Start the day with eggs made to order; a hearty full English, or a lighter breakfast from the buffet if you prefer. Lunchtime offers a select á la carte menu alongside a tempting buffet for you to indulge in up to three courses.

Experience evening dining just how it should be in the spacious restaurants on board, serving up a sumptuous five-course á la carte menu each evening. You can request a table size at the time you make your booking, although this cannot be guaranteed.

Alternatively you can opt to dine in our self-service restaurant on each vessel, for a more relaxed experience.

As each evening winds down, our buffet restaurants open for late-night snacks if you’re still feeling peckish. Of course, you can also order room service up until 11pm every day.

While the main restaurants are always popular, during your cruise you may be tempted to try something different for an evening or two. When you’re in the mood for something extra special, each ship in our fleet features speciality dining (a small supplement applies). Our Colours & Tastes or Vasco menus offer delicious Asian fusion or Indian cuisines.

Don't forget to download our app, so that once on board you can see all the breakfast, lunch and dinner menus.

We encourage our guests to head off on a journey of discovery in every destination to really get the most out of every moment of their cruise. Taking exploration to the next level are our on board RIBs, these exciting crafts offer our guests the chance to be immersed in destinations in a way few others get to enjoy. Whether you're breaking new ground by venturing even deeper into a stunning fjord, heading off on a scenic journey to an untouched beach, or sailing past an isolated spot of spectacular coastline only accessible by boat, you'll have an unmissable chance to see things on or by the ocean that regular cruise line guests never see.

Guests having a tour in our RIB's

Fred. Olsen’s RIBs have capacity for up to 12 guests and excursions last approximately one hour. While our RIB tours are available to all, guests must be physically able to step aboard the boat. This includes being capable of lifting their leg over the seat and sitting comfortable in their allocated seat. If you are interested in booking a RIB tour, we advise that you speak to our Destinations Team to view and trial a sample seat before you book.

When the time to join your tour arrives, it’s important to prepare properly for your adventure. The clothing you should wear will depend on your destination and the weather. If you’re exploring a colder region, such as Norway or Greenland, you will be required to wear a specially designed wind suit over light, comfortable clothing, to keep you warm and dry. In warmer climes what you wear is up to you, just please be mindful of wind temperatures. Whatever the weather, you will need to wear flat shoes and a life vest.

Once we’re happy all guests are ready to embark, you’ll be invited to step on board your RIB and join your expert driver and tour guide. When all guests are comfortable, it’s time to set-off in search of sights and highlights that many guests on ‘regular’ tours won’t uncover, negotiating spectacular waterways at high speed for an exhilarating, simply unforgettable ride. You might take in stunning natural wonders; sail breathtaking coastlines; or discover remote, hidden-away settlements – wherever you visit is sure to enthral and inspire; just don’t forget to take your camera with you!

balmoral boat trips

Take the free boat from Baha Mar

I’ve been on a few cruises in my day so I know just who this island is being marketed to but you know what? It is beautiful and they’ve done a wonderful job with the customer service and renovations. Beach faces Cable Beach so the view of the main island is neat but not that drift away private island feel they’d have you believe. It’s calm, shallow water. Many options for expensive food/beverage. We had two drinks and it was like $40. We wanted a brief change of scene and boat ride was cool for littles. The dolphins and sting rays are there but I’ve seen larger less expensive meet and greets in Mexico and other resort areas. Go for the private beach feel and relaxing hammocks.

Things started out dubious, we were told to meet at Senor Frogs, where we would catch a boat to go over to the island. No one greeted us or checked us in, we stood around in a group of other people who were going to the same place. Unfortunately having the tip ‘built in’ seems to mean that many of the Bahamians don’t go on the clock until precisely the time they are meant to start and there isn’t any motivation to ‘go the extra mile’ Fortunately we made it to the Balmoral Island which is stunning, the beach is white and pristine. The prices are shocking even by Bahamian standards so bring your wallet. A Sands beer is $9 and Chicken Fingers are $19 so bring money. Everything is extra, beach rentals (kayaks, snorkelling equipment etc. The best part is the opportunity to engage with the dolphins and stingrays. We opted to do the stingray encounter, Justin our guide was amazing, we were the only people to do it, so we essentially had a private encounter. He said that many people are afraid to do the stingray encounter, good for us! The picture start at $89 which isn’t too bad, we paid the same in Maui for surf photo’s, it is odd that they will only give you a CD and choose not to use DropBox or another digital medium, who has a CD Drive on their computer anymore?

We were staying at Grand Hyatt and heard about this free boat to an island so we thought we would give it a shot. We took the green boat from the pier which was fun. When we got to the island, we were whisked away to the VIP section for Hyatt and Melia guests. There was a Starbucks and food area and a few bars- food is expensive as usual. We went down to the beach and it just didn’t compare to cable beach. If you are on a cruise ship and want to see a beach and have animal encounters I guess it’s a good option. Hotels guests not so much. Missed the boat back and were stuck for an extra (unwanted) hour. Were unable to roam around the island at all- restricted to the small beach. After we missed the boat we didn’t even go back to the VIP area and get seats at the beach. we stood around the pier for another hour waiting for the green boat because we weren’t missing it again. The worst part was the bathroom smelled like absolute **** Pee in every stall (overwhelming in the heat) (made me want to throw up) (ew) Not much to do if you don’t want to swim with stingrays or dolphins. That looked like fun if you haven’t already done it. All staff was nice- just not worth it for our family.

balmoral boat trips

We were told to be at Senor Frog’s at 9:30 to meet representative and be ready to board the boat at 10. If you miss the boat you are out of luck and can not board another one. 10:00 came and went and no boat. We asked the representative and she apologized and said it would be along in a few minutes. At 10:30 we asked again how much longer. We were told in 10 minutes. The crowd waiting to board more than doubled in size. At 10:50 the boat showed up. It was obvious they didn’t sell enough tickets for the 10am boat so they had us wait and come with the next group. When we arrived we were told our dolphin encounter was at 2:15. We were supposed to be on a boat back into Nassau at 2:30. They told us we would get extra time on the island. We explained we did not want extra time because we wanted time in Nassau to shop and sight see. A nasty old man on a scooter said there were mechanical problems and there was nothing he could do about it. People were getting upset and suddenly it was the oceans problem the boat was late. He started yelling and saying he would give a full refund and send us back. Everyone had children with them who were looking forward to meeting the dolphins so this was not an option. Scooter man got very abusive to an older man who was there with his granddaughter who was about 6 or 7. It was awful to watch. Another employee jumped in and started yelling at everyone. Then they had a guy with a machine gun started walking around to show who was in charge. The beach had plenty of seating and umbrellas, but everything was ridiculously expensive. A 20 ounce bottle of water was $5. The virgin drinks cost as much as the regular drinks. All of the meals were very expensive and not very good. At 2:15 we went to have our dolphin encounter. We had to stand on the beach and wait for the other group to finish. We were told our boat was leaving at 3. At 2:45 we started getting vocal because we still were not in the water and our boat would be leaving. They said they would hold the boat. They didn’t. We had to get on the 3:45 boat (which didn’t leave until 4) to get back to Nassau. We only had enough time to grab some t-shirts from a souvenir shop before we had to get on our cruise ship. You are not allowed to take pictures. They have a photographer who takes pictures, but they are $85. We were going to get them because they were nice pictures and a good memory, but they only had one woman burning the cds in the photo shop. Had we waited we would have missed our ships departure and have to fly back to NY in our bathing suits. The dolphin and trainer we had were great, but it was too little too late.

We ended up going to Balmoral Island as a day excursion during our Royal Caribbean cruise (we wanted to avoid busy Atlantis, put our toes in the sand & have a beach day). I wasn’t sure what to expect & my hopes were not high (I read some reviews about the high prices etc). As soon as we exited the boat I walked straight to the Dolphin excursion to inquire. The staff was pleasant & trying to keep all of the impatient tourist happy while answering the million questions thrust at them. I was surprised to learn 2 of us could do the full dolphin experience for $120 ($60 each). We signed up for the 2pm swim. While we waited we rented beach floats $12 each for the entire visit (don’t let them try to tell you it’s for an hour because their flyer states length of stay). The water and beach was beautiful - we passed on the pool & cabana. Don’t waste your money on the private cabana - the beach has chairs & umbrellas FREE. The pool area is dingy. ***Dolphin Experience (swim and feed 45 minutes) was awesome! The staff was exceptional and the experience probably better and more natural than any other. You swim out to the platform and you are out there for 30+ minutes swimming, learning & touching them. Then 15 minutes of learning about them and feeding them. 7 year old loved it!!! Yes the pictures are pricey but figure you got a good deal on the excursion. The food and drinks were pricey but it was only one meal and it was very good and freshly cooked! So decide if you’re looking for fancy or salty like margaritaville :)

We had a great time on Balmoral island! It’s so beautiful with nice calm, crystal clear water. We took the free boat that’s included when staying at Baha Mar to go there. The guys on the boat were awesome! And the bartenders were super nice on the island, especially William and Levy and Vicky! Yes, drinks are pricey but so worth it, given the atmosphere. When staying at bahamar and taking the boat here, you can hang out in the VIP section, with chairs & umbrellas everywhere, and also comfy couches on the beach. We just hung out on our couches and the fantastic servers came all the time to check if we needed anything. Oh, they also have hammocks on the beach. Paradise!

You will learn about the different epochs of the city from the foundation in 1147 till Soviet times of 20 th  century.

Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south.

Bridges in Moscow

Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.

  • Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
  • Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
  • Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
  • Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
  • Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

  • Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
  • Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
  • Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
  • Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
  • Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!

Monasteries and temples

  • Novospassky Monastery
  • Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
  • Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
  • Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
  • Cathedral of Christ the Savior
  • The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
  • The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
  • Novodevichy Convent
  • The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
  • St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
  • St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.
