What people love about Rabat Tours

Wonderful experience, More than expected, Driver hicham (Morocco tours agency) was very helpful, Local guides were knowledgeable. Great accommodations, Felt welcomed.
Cultural morocco days tour was the high light of our trip to morocco not only did we have an amazing time but left the trip feeling like we had learn a lot about Moroccan culture and the way in which it had developed. Our host for the trip Abdel was are really caring genuine man which you could really have laugh with, He looked after the whole of us very well and made the trip worth while. Highly recommended.
Our family of 5 booked this private tour. We had no good idea on what to expect, although looking back, the description said it all. Our private driver Abdou picked us up with his 9 person van from our hotel in the morning after our arrival and from that moment the adventure began. We have seen so many things during the 9 days, visited so many places. Most nights we slept in authentic Riads, one more beautiful than the other and of course there was something to criticize everywhere, but overall and without exception they were beautiful and special. We received a warm welcome everywhere with a mint tea which made our trip extra special. We spend many hours in the car driving through changing sceneries, but there was so much to see that it never got boring. The Sahara was a special experience, the overnight stay in the tent was good, but it was a shame that the camp lighting did not work due to an electricity problem. The surrounding camps were attractively lit, but ours was like a dark hole. In our opinion, this could have been solved with candlelight to create some atmosphere, but unfortunately that was not the case. Luckily the lighting did work inside the tent. Big shout out to our driver Abdou who guided us safely through the crazy traffic in the cities, but also during the many hours driving through the mountains. We felt safe and secured, he is a very skilled driver and a nice person. He was there when needed, ready to answer any question but never too much present so we spent hours in silence as well while driving. I can really recommend him. All together we had a wonderful journey, above expectations and now, 2 weeks later, we are still processing all the impressions. It was a really good trip, highly recommend it. But next time we skip Marrakech: scooters in a Medina should be forbidden! :)

Travel Talk

"The tour was OK. I do not think it was a 4 star stay as advertised but could be according to local standards. The tour felt rushed as we kept being taken from market to market without being given time to experience it and shop. When we were given time to shop, it was in specific shops chosen by the guide (tourist traps with higher prices than in the normal market). The last stop Ouarzazate was not worth it therefore may be better to take the 9 day option. Regarding the price - it was sold at a "50% discount". If it had been "full price", I would have been bitterly disappointed.

"Great tour to introduce you to Morocco. Lots of driving between cities. The overnight in the dessert camp was awful, sheets not changed from last visitors, facilities not useable, would rather just have a sunset camel ride and dinner or pay more to upgrade to a comfortable dessert camp. Jamal our guide was great. Morocco is truly a beautiful place with lots of culture and amazing sites. I feel it was great value for what we paid (except the dessert camp!).

"I am being generous with my 3 stars. It took over three hours to resolved the issue with train to Rabat, and that was with the help from a stranger, also waiting for the train, who alerted us of the train delay and no guarantee that we have a seat on a train, even if it came. There should be backup protocol for train delay and van breakdown. In a group of strangers traveling together, there will be someone who can be annoying. We had someone on the group, who are just a bit over excited, and everyone in the group was teasing him about it. It is acceptable for other tourists to criticize and correct other tourists, but it is not acceptable for a tour guide to pile on the teasing and criticism, when no one bring the complain to the guide. Unless the annoying action is outrage, everyone should put up with a bit of annoyance from other tourists. If they can't then they should book a private tour. In this group, I don't think anyone action was over the top where the guide needed to step in. I found the guide to be rule at time. The guide communication and organization skill was lacking. His soft spoken style would only work with a 2-4 people group. With a bigger group, it does not work. I do give credit to the guide for stepping up and help a tourist, who hurted herself on a hike, with run to the hospital and all the medical visit. I hope that my tip reflects that.

Rabat Adventure Tours

Rabat  is the capital of the Kingdom of Morocco. It is also the capital of the Rabat-Salé-Zemmour-Zaer region. The city is located on the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the river Bou Regreg. On the facing shore of the river lies Salé, Rabat’s bedroom community. Together the two cities account for a population of 1.3 million. Unfortunately, silting problems have diminished the city’s role as a port; however, Rabat and Salé still maintain relatively important textile, food processing, and construction industries. In addition, tourism and the presence of all foreign embassies in Morocco serve to make Rabat the second most important city in the country after the larger and more economically significant Casablanca.

Rabat’s history began with a settlement, known as Chellah on the banks of the Oued Bou Regreg in the third century BC. In 40 AD, Romans took over Chellah and converted it to the Roman settlement of Sala Colonia. Rome held the colony until 250 AD when they abandoned it to Berber rulers. The Berbers played an important role in Muslim Spain. In 1146, the Almohad ruler Abd al-Mu’min turned Rabat’s ribat into a full scale fortress to use as a launching point for attacks on Spain. In 1170, due to its military importance, Rabat acquired the title  Ribatu l-Fath , meaning “stronghold of victory,” from which it gets its current name.

Yaqub al-Mansur (known as Moulay Yacoub in Morocco), another Almohad Caliph, moved the capital of his empire to Rabat. He built Rabat’s city walls and began construction on what would have been the world’s largest mosque. However, Yaqub died and construction stopped. The ruins of the unfinished mosque, including the Hassan Tower, still stand today.

Yaqub’s death initiated a period of decline. The Almohad empire lost control of its possessions in Spain and much of its African territory, eventually leading to its total collapse. In the 13th century, much of Rabat’s economic power shifted to Fez. In 1515 a Moorish explorer, El Wassan, reported that Rabat had declined so much that only 100 inhabited houses remained. An influx of Moriscos, who had been expelled from Spain, in the early 17th century helped boost Rabat’s growth.

Rabat and neighboring Salé united to form the  Republic of Bou Regreg  in 1627. The republic was run by Barbary pirates who used the two cities as base ports for launching attacks on shipping. The pirates did not have to contend with any central authority until the Alaouite Dynasty united Morocco in 1666. They attempted to establish control over the pirates, but failed. European and Muslims authorities continued to attempt to control the pirates over many years, but the Republic of Bou Regreg did not collapse until 1818. Even after the republic’s collapse, pirates continued to use the port of Rabat, which led to the shelling of the city by Austria in 1829 after an Austrian ship had been lost to a pirate attack.

The French invaded Morocco in 1912 and established a protectorate. The French administrator of Morocco, General Hubert Lyautey, decided to relocate the country’s capital from Fez to Rabat. Among other factors, rebellious Berbers (native Moroccans) had made Fez an unstable place. Sultan Moulay Youssef followed the decision of the French and moved his residence to Rabat. In 1913, Gen. Lyautey hired  Henri Prost  who designed the Ville Nouvelle (Rabat’s modern quarter) as an administrative sector. When Morocco achieved independence in 1956, Mohammed V, the then King of Morocco, chose to have the capital remain at Rabat.

Activities and tours from Rabat

About Rabat:

Rabat, rests along the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. It is known for iconic landmarks that speak to its Islamic and French-colonial heritage, including the Kasbah of the Udayas, Hassan Tower, and Challah fortress…

Rabat is the political capital and the main administrative center of Morocco, as well as the fourth imperial city. It is a curious mixture of the historical tradition of the past and present modernity. The establishment of Rabat dates back to 12th century by the Sultan Abd Al-Momin, Al Muhads dynasty. Rabat has just over a million people. Modern and even reserved by Moroccan standards, the city also has many fascinating historic sites, including the picturesque Kasbah of the Udayas, built in the mid-12th century. It is a majestic and splendid architecture embellished by the surrounding gardens. The kasbah (fortress) was used as a military base to fight against Spanish troops. The unique Hassan Tower, begun at the end of the 12th century, was meant to have the world’s largest minaret, but was never completed. Just opposite the tower lies the 20th-century Mausoleum of Mohammed V, another of the city’s main attractions. Not far from the walls, stand the imposing walls of the Challah; a necropolis from the time of the Merinids. The city became the secured refuge for Muslims who were expelled from Spain in the early 17th century.

Rabat does not just offer historical landmarks but it is also a modern eco-responsible capital with its green spaces. Beautiful parks await you, such as the botanical test garden or the Exotic Gardens of Bouknadel which is a few kilometres from the city. Rabat boasts an outstanding coastline; on the Atlantic Ocean shores, it has kilometers of well-equipped beaches that lead to the neighboring city of Casablanca.

With its modern infrastructures and various festivals, Rabat is a living city. Airport, tram, shopping centres, cafés and restaurants, all the amenities are within your reach. Revel in bustling vibes of music that Rabat celebrates like no other city; from Mawazine, to jazz au Challah and many others that fill the atmosphere with sounds and rhythms from all over the world. Rabat is a city where the treasures of the past blend with the most modern and environmentally friendly achievements.

In relation to tourism industry, Rabat is a fascinating Moroccan city worth to visit. It has an important list of cultural and historical sites which most of travelers fall in love with. It abounds with a sense of exotic mystery, interesting history, beautiful vistas, and unspoiled beaches… For tourists, Rabat is a treasure trove of sights, experiences and encounters that promises a thrilling time for tourists when they come to the country’s largest metropolis.

As a traveler to Morocco and you wish to experience the authentic Moroccan culture and immerse in local history, Rabat makes an ideal location for setting out on exciting day trips and tours across the country. Again, it is a destination of fascinating charm and ideal arrival point to start your holidays around Morocco.

The capital city of Rabat is a web of pleasant avenues and parks, crowned with one of the best-preserved medieval medina towns in all of North Africa. But, for all its beauty and wealth, it remains one of the hidden gems of the Morocco tourist trail, enjoying relatively small crowds during the high season and exuding an authenticity that can be difficult to find elsewhere in the country. First time visitors should ask their Rabat tourist guide for some walking route suggestions that encompass all the gems of the historical city centre, from the magnificent seaside Kasbah to the winding cobbled backstreets of the medieval Old Medina. A little further off-the-beaten-track, and the ancient settlement of Chellah is also worth a visit; once Carthaginian, it now bears the marks of a great many subsequent conquerors. Rabat is also one of the best-established foodie destinations on the Morocco circuit, with traditional eateries serving regional tagines in the night and a great selection of European-style joints cooking pizzas and French pastries in the morning.

15 Best Things to Do in Rabat (Morocco)

Civilisations and dynasties from the Phoenicians to the Merenids have all claimed this place on the estuary of the river Bou Regreg as their home.

That complicated heritage is laid at your feet at the Chellah, at the ruins of the Roman city and an Almohad necropolis.

The Kasbah of the Udayas is a citadel posted over the river, with a warren of streets and a tranquil garden in the Andalusian style.

Rabat is the main residence of King Mohammed VI, and the burial place of his grandfather Mohammed V (1909-1961), who negotiated Morocco’s independence and whose resplendent mausoleum is open to all.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Rabat:

1. Kasbah of the Udayas

Kasbah of the Udayas

Guarding the mouth of the Bou Regreg River from the cliff-top on the left bank is a 12th-century citadel, reconstructed by the Almohads from 1146 as a base from which to launch attacks on Iberia.

The Kasbah of the Udayas is a compact maze of scurrying alleys with whitewashed housed trimmed with blue.

The walls command awesome views of Rabat’s beach, the Atlantic, the Bou Regreg estuary and Salé over on the right bank.

Predating the kasbah is a tenth century mosque that was reconstructed by an 18th-century English renegade known as Ahmed El Inglizi.

At the powerful main gate, Bab Oudaïa, check out the profuse mouldings tracing the arch and on the frieze.

The Oudaias Craft Museum is in a 17th-century palace in the Kasbah, displaying pottery, Korans, musical instruments, jewellery, traditional Moroccan clothing, jewellery and spectacular Berber carpets.

Chellah

Great fun to explore, this walled garden on the left bank of the Bou Regreg estuary holds many layers of history going back to the Phoenicians who set up a trading post on this spot some 2,500 years ago.

This grew into the Roman city of Sala Colonia, which had a Roman military unit until well into the 5th century, long after Rome had withdrawn from the rest of the region.

Muslim Arabs took over in the 7th century, and it was under the Marinids in the 13th century that the former city was turned into a royal necropolis.

Amongst the ancient fruit trees are Roman holdovers like a triumphal arch, steles, walls and a fountain.

In the Muslim section sits the tomb of Marinid ruler Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Othman (1297-1351), known as the Black Sultan, who once held sway over the entire Maghreb region.

This is near the foot of a mostly intact stone minaret for a ruined mosque, still partially adorned with zellige tilework, and capped with a stork’s nest.

3. Hassan Tower

Hassan Tower

The grand historical complex that also features the Mausoleum of Mohammed V is in the shadow of an incomplete 44-metre red sandstone minaret.

This was erected in the late-12th century for a humungous mosque that would have held 20,000 worshippers.

The Hassan Tower was commissioned by the Abu Yusuf Yaqub al-Mansur (1160-1199), the third Caliph of the Almohad Caliphate, and would have been one of the tallest in the world at 60 metres.

Construction was abandoned after al-Mansur died, and what’s left of the mosque, further damaged by the 1755 Lisbon Earthquake, can be seen in the 348 regimented cylindrical stone columns in front.

The Hassan Tower has discreet multi-lobed latticework on its upper levels, and, like La Giralda in Seville, has ramps instead of stairs, allowing the muezzin to get to the top on horseback.

4. Mausoleum of Mohammed V

Mausoleum of Mohammed V

Facing off from the Hassan Tower is one of Morocco’s most venerated shrines, as the tomb of the ruler who guided the nation into independence.

Unusually, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V is open to non-Muslims, and was built in the 1960s to a design by Vietnamese architect Éric Vo Toan.

As well as Mohammed V (grandfather of the reigning Mohammed VI), the mausoleum is the resting place of his two sons, King Hassan (1929-1999) and Prince Abdallah (1935-1983). Outside the mausoleum is imposing but restrained, with multi-loved horseshoe arches and jagged merlons, but the interior brims with fine Moroccan decor.

There’s a marble floor, vibrant zellige walls and an incredibly detailed ceiling of carved cedar painted with golf leaf and crowned with a dome with stained glass windows.

You can view Mohammed V’s tomb from a gallery above.

Medina, Rabat

Accessed via Rue Souika, Rabat’s old town was all there was of the city until Centre Ville and the Ville Nouvelle cropped up in the early 20th century.

Rabat’s Medina may come as a relief to those who have braved the persistent vendors and touts in Marrakesh and Fez.

This neighbourhood, though very picturesque for its whitewashed houses with blue trim, is mainly residential.

Most of the activity happens at the cafes and small shops along Rue Souika, and the partially covered Rue des Consuls, with its stalls for leather goods, embroidered fabrics, stencilled lamps, babouche slippers and Berber carpets, weaving up to the Kasbah of the Udayas.

6. Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMVI)

Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art

The first independent museum in Morocco for modern and contemporary art, the MMVI opened in 2014 and was a decade in the making.

This sophisticated building by Karim Chakor, draws from Rabat’s Andalusian heritage with its horseshoe arches and latticework.

The permanent collection, encompassing more than 200 Moroccan artists, is eclectic, running the gamut from Impressionism to Postmodernism.

There are pieces by the likes of Ahmed Yacoubi (1928-1985), a contemporary of Paul Bowles in Tangier, and Hassan Hajjaj, billed as the Andy Warhol of Marrakesh.

After a couple of hours perusing the well-curated galleries you can call in at the cafe and gift shop on the ground floor.

7. National Zoo

National Zoo, Rabat

Something that elevates Rabat’s National Zoo, home to more than 150 species, is that it was originally built for the lions that lived at the Royal Palace.

What’s fascinating is that these animals descend from the wild Barbary lions, now extinct in the wild, captured by the royal family in the Atlas Mountains.

There are more than 1,500 animals at the National Zoo, from hippopotamuses to African elephants, mouflons, Nile crocodiles, hyenas, addaxes and African wild dogs, living in healthy enclosures that mimic the animals’ natural environment.

This is more than a place to stare at captive animals, as you’ll discover at the museum, which deals with Morocco’s changing fauna since the end of the Tertiary Period some 2.6 million years ago.

A new vivarium, opened in 2019 holds terrariums for turtles, lizards, amphibians and snakes.

Youngsters will have a fun time, feeding the giraffes and taking a ride on a Shetland pony.

8. Villa des Arts

Villa Des Arts, Rabat

At a stately mansion in lush, peaceful grounds, this art museum is run by the Fondation ONA, a non-profit partly dedicated to raising the profile of Moroccan art, at two cultural centres, in Rabat and Casablanca.

The Villa des Arts in Rabat has two permanent exhibitions, for self-taught naive artist Radia Bent Lhoucine (1912-1994), and Jilali Gharbaoui (1930-1971), considered the first Moroccan non-figurative painter.

When we wrote this list in October 2019 Rabat’s first art biennale was taking place, with works by Katrín Sigurdardóttir (Iceland), Katharina Cibulk (Austria), Amal Kenawy (Egypt) and Majida Khtari (Morocco). There’s also a stage for performing arts at the centre, for a regular programme of live music, seminars and discussions.

9. Andalusian Gardens

Andalusian Gardens, Rabat

Tucked inside the entrance of the Kasbah of the Udayas by the Oudaias Craft Museum is an elegant formal garden contained by the citadel’s embattled walls.

Growing in rectangular beds trimmed with low boxwood hedges are orange trees, date palms, roses and red hibiscus.

Take a while to amble along the alleys, under pergolas entwined with grape vines, and by cats yawning on the terrace walls.

The garden is newer than it seems, having been landscaped by Maurice Tranchant de Lunel (1869-1944) under the French Protectorate.

Right beside the garden is the Café Maure where you can sip mint tea with a sparkling view of the Bou Regreg estuary.

Rabat–Salé Tramway

The city of Salé was founded on the right bank of the Bou Regreg estuary in the 11th century.

Now it’s a commuter town, with a Medina catering to local residents and not tourists, so prices are much lower if you bargain.

The best way to make the trip is on the modern Rabat–Salé Tramway, which opened in 2011 and crosses the Pont Hassan II on the Bou Regreg, built especially for the line.

Salé has played a key role in Morocco’s modern history, not least as a hotbed for nationalist sentiment, and the first place where independence demonstrations took place against the French.

The Great Mosque of Salé is the third-largest in the country, first built in 1028-29. Non-Muslims can’t get in, but you can get a sense of its splendid interior through the gate.

Something you can visit is the Salé Medersa (Madrasa) next door, dating to 1333 and with sumptuous zellige tiles, stucco mouldings and a carved cedar canopy in its courtyard.

11. Dar al-Makhzen

Dar al-Makhzen, Rabat

If you want to see where King Mohammed VI lives you can make your way down to the Touarga commune, a couple of kilometres south of the medina.

Alaouite sultans and kings have had a residence in Rabat since the 18th-century reign of Mohammed ben Abdallah, and the current palace was constructed in 1864. The complex has taken on extra importance since the time of the French Protectorate, as the king’s main home, and witnessed the birth of Hassan II in 1929 and the marriage of Mohammed VI to Princess Lalla Salma in 2002. Unlike most Moroccan royal palaces, you can visit the vast grounds, as long as you bring your passport with you.

Opening times aren’t posted, so there’s a chance you’ll be denied access.

If that’s the case you can take a photo of ornate gateway and uniformed guards.

12. Mawazine Festival

Mawazine Festival

This city-wide music festival, taking place in June, is the largest in the country, where dozens of artists perform on seven different stages across nine nights.

The event has been running since 2001 and features domestic, African, Arab and international artists, showcasing the 21st-century Morocco as an open and tolerant place.

Naturally, conservative voices continue to criticise Mawazine for “encouraging immoral behaviour”. Each stage has a different flavour: The Théatre Mohammed V hosts jazz, folk, choral and classic pop performances, while contemporary stars from across the Arab world play Nahda (Elissa, Najwa Karam, Mohammed Assaf in 2019). Major occidental stars take stage at OLM Souissi.

In 2019 David Guetta, Migos and The Black Eyed Peas were all on the bill.

Past performers have included Bruno Mars, Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Lopez, Lauryn Hill, Rod Stewart, Pharrell Williams and Sting.

13. St Peter’s Cathedral

St Peter's Cathedral, Rabat

A familiar silhouette on the Rabat cityscape, the functioning St Peter’s Cathedral was visited in March 2019 by Pope Francis.

The building is in the Art Deco style with Moorish accents, especially in the latticework of its windows, and Resident-General Hubert Lyautey presided over the inauguration ceremony in 1921. The two towers, seen from all over Rabat, came later, in 1931. In the whitewashed interior, take a look at the stations of the cross, in mosaic, as well the radiant strips of stained glass throughout.

14. Jardins Exotiques de Bouknadel

Jardins Exotiques de Bouknadel

About 20 minutes up from the Kasbah of the Udayas, on the N1 road, from Salé to Kenitra is a garden held as one of the most important and most attractive in Morocco.

In four hectares, the Jardins Exotiques de Bouknadel were planted in the middle of the 20th century by the French horticulturalist Marcel François (1900-1999), who bought this plot in 1949. The space has been open to the public since 1961, and after a fallow period in the 80s and 90s, were rehabilitated in 2000s and reopened in 2005. A wide variety of species and garden styles are crammed into these four hectares.

You can view Japanese, Chinese and Andalusian garden styles, but also botanical display from around the globe, including the African savannah, the Caribbean and the Amazon and Congo rainforests.

There’s a Moorish-style cafe by the entrance, and the home of Marcel François holds a museum about the history of the site and its rebirth in the 2000s.

15. Half-Day City Tour

Rabat

You may be in Rabat on a flying visit, in which case you could make the most of this tour offered through GetYourGuide.com .

The Half-Day City Tour condenses a holiday’s worth of sights into four short hours, whisking you to the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, the Kasbah of the Udayas, the Chellah, the medina and more.

All entry fees are included in the price of the tour, and you’ll travel in comfort in air-conditioned vehicle in the company of a knowledgeable guide from the city.

14 Top-Rated Attractions & Things to Do in Rabat

Written by Jess Lee Updated Jan 24, 2024 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

As Morocco's capital, Rabat is home to the country's most important museum, the Royal Palace, and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, as well as several historical tourist attractions.

As one of Morocco's Imperial Cities, Rabat is one of the best places to visit while traveling up or down the Atlantic Coast. Smaller and less famous than the Imperial Cities of Marrakesh and Fes, Rabat's calmer atmosphere can also be a welcome break from the tourist hustle of other cities.

The Bou Regreg River runs along the city's western rim, separating it from its sister city of Salé, which is worth exploring while here. Other major things to do while in town include visiting both the Chellah excavation site and the Oudaias Kasbah.

Discover the best places to visit in the city with our list of the top attractions and things to do in Rabat.

Oudaias Kasbah

Rabat's Kasbah district is one of the city's top sightseeing draws. Inside the 11th-century fortress walls is a small neighborhood of winding lanes rimmed by Andalusian-style houses. This is a prime area for a meandering stroll, with plenty of photo opportunities within the narrow blue-and-white lanes.

At the Kasbah's southern end, you'll find the tranquil Andalusian Gardens . If you're traveling with little ones in tow, this welcome green space is a prime opportunity to let them run wild without worrying about cars and delivery cyclists. The gardens have plenty of shade, under palms and orange trees, and fountains are dotted around the walkways.

For photos, head to the district's northern tip, where there's a platform offering panoramic views over both the Atlantic Ocean to the west and Salé to the north.

The most impressive gateway into the Kasbah is the 12th-century Bab Oudaia in the southern wall. From Bab Oudaia, the main road of Rue el Jamma leads to the Kasbah Mosque, which is the oldest mosque in Rabat.

Address: Place de Oudaia

Hassan Tower

Built by the Almohads, the unfinished Hassan Tower (Le Tour Hassan) was the work of ruler Yacoub al-Mansour and would have been the minaret for his grand vision of a massive mosque on this site that was planned to be one of the largest in the world.

Upon his death in 1150, construction was abandoned , and this 45-meter-high tower is all that remains of his original ambitious plan.

Intricately carved motifs and designs cover the tower's facade, pointing to the sumptuousness of what al-Mansour had in mind.

The Hassan Tower, and the neighboring Mausoleum of Mohammed V both sit inside the manicured gardens of Jardin Tour Hassan. This is a hugely popular spot for local families to hang out and stroll at dusk , so come then if you want to see some local life.

Address: Jardin Tour Hassan, Avenue Tour Hassan

Mausoleum of Mohamed V

The glittering Mausoleum of King Mohammed V was built on the very place where, upon his return from exile in Madagascar, he gathered thousands of Moroccans together to thank God for giving independence to their country.

As well as the tomb of Mohammed V, his son King Hassan II is also buried here.

The opulent tomb chamber is a showcase of Moroccan traditional design, resplendently decorated, with zellige tile work covering the walls around the grand marble tomb.

Non-Muslims cannot enter the adjoining mosque but are able to view the mausoleum's tomb chamber from a terrace above, as long as they are dressed respectfully (shoulders and knees covered).

Chellah Necropolis

The remnants of the 14th-century Merenid citadel-town of Chellah are an atmospheric place. The walled ruins are positioned on an older Roman town called Sala, which archaeologists uncovered evidence of in the 1930s. Today, parts of both these settlements can be seen.

Chellah thrived as a Merenid citadel in the early 14th century. The crumbled ruins of mosques and mausoleums they built here are now covered with rambling brambles, providing nesting sites for storks . The excavated Roman part of the site includes a forum, bath, and temple.

For a good overview of the entire Chellah ruins, an overlooking terrace provides excellent views across the site.

Address: Avenue Yacoub al-Mansour

Medina

Rabat's rambling medina area has a distinctly Andalusian style to its buildings, as most of the architecture here dates from the 17th century, when Muslims from Spain's Andalusia region arrived. This makes it very different from the medinas of Fes and Marrakesh.

If you found exploring the medina districts of Fes and Marrakesh rather intense, Rabat offers a more laid-back experience with far fewer crowds.

In particular, while strolling here, look out for the Grand Mosque on Rue Souka , built by the Merenids in the 14th century. Nearby is a Merenid-built fountain.

The Mellah (Jewish Quarter) is in the medina's southeast corner.

Rabat medina's souq area is still very orientated towards locals doing their grocery shopping, rather than tourists hunting down souvenirs, which means this is a great place to sample and buy local produce, particularly dates, spices, olives, and pickled vegetables.

If you're looking for bargains and local craft work, the two best shopping streets are Souq es Sebbat and Rue Souka .

The medina is the best place in the city for getting into Moroccan street food . Tiny hole-in-the-wall grilled meat stalls, canteens, and bakeries are scattered through the alleys, so make sure to pull up a pew at a street front table to munch on brochettes (kebab skewers) and merguez (sausages) for lunch, or continue your wanders with a makouda (potato fritter) in hand.

The Kasbah district sits just off the medina's northeast corner, so it's easy to combine visits to both in one morning or afternoon.

Address: Avenue Hassan II

Mohammed VI Museum of Contemporary Arts

For anyone interested in Morocco's modern art movement, this museum is one of Rabat's top things to do. The permanent collection, housed in an impressively renovated building dating back to the French colonial days, is small but holds artworks from nearly all the country's top names in the art world, from the mid-20th century to the present day. There is also a program of temporary exhibitions featuring both local and international artists.

A visit here makes a lovely contrast to viewing the traditional artisan work for which Morocco is rightly famous and shows the contemporary side to the country's long artistic expressions.

Address: Avenue Moulay Hassan, Rabat

Rabat's Ville Nouvelle (New City)

Rabat's Ville Nouvelle (New City) is home to the Archaeological Museum and also the surprisingly interesting Postal Museum (on Avenue Mohammed V), which brings together a superb collection of Moroccan stamps, telephones, and telegraph machines.

The streets of the Ville Nouvelle host a wealth of French colonial architecture and are a pleasant place for a stroll. Try to come just at dusk when the birds are all swooping between the avenue trees, finding their place to roost, and Rabat locals are crowding into the street front cafes.

Right on the district's edge, Avenue Hassan II follows the 17th-century defensive wall separating the modern city from the medina.

To the south of the Ville Nouvelle is Rabat's Royal Palace , constructed in 1864 and fenced off from its surroundings with a grand wall. The complex is not open to the public, as the current king still uses the palace as his residence.

You can get good photographs of the palace exterior from the nearby Sunna Mosque.

Bronze of a dog at the Rabat Archaeology Museum

Built in 1932 and enlarged a few years later to display excavated finds, this museum is home to Morocco's best archaeological collection .

The prehistoric section brings together human remains from the Middle Paleolithic period to the Neolithic, illustrating the continuity and size of the population at this time.

Pre-Roman civilizations are well represented in the collection, but the Roman-era exhibits, hailing from Morocco's major archaeological sites of Lixus, Volubilis, and Chellah, are the museum's highlights and include bronzes, ceramics, and statuary.

Even if you're not a museum person, this is the one museum on your Morocco travels that you shouldn't miss.

Address: Rue al-Brihi Parent, Rabat

Salé Medina

Sitting directly across the Bou Regreg river from Rabat, Salé is a quaint and picturesque place to spend a few hours in the afternoon.

The medina district here is dotted with important historic monuments that have been carefully restored . As well as the Abou Hassan Medersa, the district is also home to Salés' Grand Mosque, the Mausoleum of Sidi Ben Ashir with its photogenic whitewashed tomb, and the Fondouk (khan) al-Askour.

Salé is known for its craft work and the medina offers some wonderfully atmospheric souqs (market streets), where you can join in with the locals and try out your haggling skills. The shopping souqs here are very much a local affair and haven't been overly trussed-up for the tourists, which makes them an interesting counterpoint to the souq streets of Marrakesh and Fes.

For the best photo opportunities of the thick, mighty walls of Rabat's Oudaias Kasbah on the other side of the river, head to Salé's beach.

After exploring the medina district, head to Salé's Marina Bouregreg, a modern marina complex with a collection of modern cafés and restaurants, and views across the river to the Hassan Tower. This is a popular spot for sampling cafe life in the early evening.

The easiest way of getting to Salé is to hop on the Rabat-Salé tram. It's incredibly cheap and runs every twenty minutes between 6am and 10pm.

Address: Place Hassan II, Salé

Abul Hassan Medersa

Directly across the Bou Regreg River, facing Rabat, the town of Salé is home to several interesting medersas (Islamic schools of learning) and mausoleums. The most popular of these buildings to visit is the Abou Hassan Medersa, which is renowned for the fine craftsmanship on display within its interior.

The Abou Hassan Medersa dates from the Merenid era in the 14th century . Its internal rooms and courtyard are covered with beautifully restored examples of traditional religious decoration, including zellige tile work, elaborately carved stucco work, and intricately carved wood panels.

If you climb up to the roof , you can enjoy excellent views across the water to Rabat.

Address: Rue Ras ash-Shajara, Salé

Jardins Exotiques

For a slice of lush nature, take a trip out to Jardins Exotiques, about 13 kilometers north of Rabat.

This vast series of gardens, shaded by tall palms, was the work of French horticulturist Marcel Francois, who brought plant species from sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and South America here to create a showcase of exotic nature.

A series of walkways , scattered with ornamental bridges, water features, and follies, wind through the gardens, which today have a shaggy, overgrown ambience that adds to the charm.

The paths here lead you on walks that range from an easy 30-minute stroll to the Red Trail's three-hour exploration which traverses every section of the park, so there's a choice for everyone.

It's hugely popular on weekends with local families, so for a quieter experience head here on a weekday. Make sure to pack water, particularly if you're embarking on the Red Trail. There's a great café near the entrance, perfect for chilling out after exploring the park.

Address: Route de Rabat, Bouknadal

Lac Sidi Boughaba

Established as a military fort by Morocco's first French Resident General in 1912, Kenitra is a modern town on the road to Tangier, about 46 kilometers north of Rabat.

Although the town itself doesn't have much to offer visitors, it's a great base for trips to the bird-watching haven of Lac Sidi Boughaba National Park. This park, just on the outskirts of town, is a major stop-off point for migratory birds between October and March.

Other nearby sightseeing attractions include the Roman garrison site of Thamusida, just to the north of Kenitra. Although sparse, the ruins of Thamusida include a temple, bath, housing, and a large garrison camp area.

Fishing boats in Moulay Bousselham

Known for its scoop of beach, bobbing fishing boats in the port, and the bird-spotting activities of Merja Zerga National Park, Moulay Bousselham, 140 kilometers north of Rabat, is an easygoing place to while away a day or two.

It's a good stop-off point on a journey up or down the Atlantic Coast between Rabat and Tangier.

For bird-watchers , a visit to Moulay Bousselham is all about getting onto the lagoon of the national park, where herons, plovers, egrets, and flamingos can be easily spotted on a boat trip, while those just after a relaxed day can enjoy the golden sand that fronts the town.

Bouznika Plage

Two beaches near Rabat are known for their good surfing. The beach of Plage des Nations sits 17 kilometers to the north of the city and is a popular spot with local surfers because of the wave action. There are sun loungers with shades for rent on the sand and a decent café on-site. Note that the waves and currents can be very strong here, so only strong and experienced swimmers should go in the water.

About 15 kilometers south of Rabat is the beach of Temara Plage . The sandy strip here can get very busy during July and August. Again, this is a popular beach with surfers, but the waves and currents mean that weak swimmers should refrain from heading far into the sea.

If you don't mind heading a bit farther south, Bouznika Plage (40 kilometers south of Rabat) is one of the best beaches in the area for sunbathing and swimming with a long bay of golden sand, plenty of sun loungers and shades, and nearby cafés for refreshments. It's hugely popular with local families on summer weekends.

Rabat was founded as an Arab army outpost in the 12th century and given the generic name for military encampment, Ribat, which is still in use today.

For centuries, Rabat and Salé were rival principalities, but eventually, Rabat began to dominate the area. Salé's power was ultimately eclipsed altogether by its larger neighbor.

In the early 17th century, Rabat became a center of anti-European piracy, with its stronghold at the Kasbah des Oudaias.

Rabat was first made a modern capital in 1912 by Morocco's French overlords, and remained the nation's capital after independence in 1956. The city is the residence of Morocco's royal family.

To experience all the fascinating sights and sounds of Rabat, the best area to stay is in the city center, near the medina and the Oudaias Kasbah with its tangle of alleyways and old buildings. Other attractions, such as the Hassan Tower and Royal Palace, are a short taxi ride away. Some of the best-value accommodation options are in riads, a type of traditional Moroccan guesthouse with an interior courtyard.

Luxury Hotels:

  • Distinctly Moroccan in style, the Hotel la Tour Hassan , with a pool and spa, lies within walking distance of the medina, Oudaias Kasbah, Hassan Tower, and the Royal Palace. It's Rabat's most prestigious hotel.
  • The Sofitel Rabat Jardin des Roses , about two kilometers from the Royal Palace, sports a more contemporary Moroccan style and presides over acres of palm-studded gardens and a lovely outdoor pool.
  • At the high end of the luxury hotels, Villa Diyafa Boutique Hotel and Spa is in Rabat's Ambassador's District, a short taxi ride from the city sights, and offers limousine transfers and personal butlers for select rooms.

Mid-Range Hotels:

  • Near the coast and just inside the medina, the Riad Kalaa is steeped in elegant Moroccan style and offers a restaurant and pool. It's about eight minutes on foot from the Oudaias Kasbah.
  • Also in the medina, Riad Zyo resides in a modern whitewashed building, with chic rooms, a small courtyard pool, and a rooftop terrace.
  • Nearby Riad Dar El Kebira is another stylish guesthouse, with a hammam and spa. The included breakfast is served on the rooftop terrace.
  • An easy stroll from the medina and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, Le Diwan Rabat - MGallery Collection is known for its colorful, modern rooms with an Art Deco theme and has a spa and restaurant.

Budget Hotels:

  • Just outside the gates to the medina, Riad Meftaha is an authentic Moroccan guesthouse with a tranquil courtyard and striking tilework. It's known for its helpful staff and it includes breakfast.

One year later, PGA Tour/PIF deal still not in place despite reports of progress

arabian tours rabat

It’s fair to say that when the PGA Tour announced nearly a year ago on June 6 that it had a framework deal in place with the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, the group behind the LIV Tour, the news hit with the impact of a thunderbolt.

After more than a year of name calling and lawsuits and player defections, suddenly the PGA Tour was willing to make a deal with the PIF. And the basic deal had been negotiated so quickly that most players on the PGA Tour weren’t informed of what was going on until 24 hours before the announcement.

One year later, at least from outside of the negotiations, not much has changed. If there has been movement in trying to bring the two tours together, that movement has been kept behind closed doors. In fact the last big news in the negotiations was last December when Jon Rahm made the jump from the PGA Tour to LIV, causing a firestorm of complaints and prompting fan apathy toward the sport.

Here’s a look at the PGA Tour-PIF framework one year later:

Deadlines mean nothing

When the first announcement of the framework agreement was made June 6, 2023, it was generally accepted that there was an end-of-the-year deadline to get a complete deal done. When it became apparent that deadline wasn’t going to be met, suddenly the talk was that hopefully by the Masters in April a deal could be completed. Now the game has passed both the Masters and the PGA Championship and there seems to be less news than before about a working model for the PGA Tour and the PIF. And for now, there is no talk about deadlines by the FedEx Cup playoffs or even by the end of the year. That indicates that the negotiations are much tougher and more complex than people would have thought a year ago

Is there progress?

Major championship winner Jordan Spieth recently said he disagreed with the popular story in the media and elsewhere that there was no progress being made in the talks between the PGA Tour and the PIF. In fact, Spieth said, progress is being made, but that the negotiations will proceed at their own pace. That’s certainly not encouraging for fans and players who want a quick end to the discussions. What progress means is another question. Does that mean just talking but not agreeing, or does it mean substantial movement on key issues. Remember, the PGA Tour took a $3 billion investment from the Strategic Sports Group, which eased the tour’s money woes, a main reason for the framework deal.

There are still hurt feelings

One of the biggest problems PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan faced in the aftermath of the June 6 announcement was the feeling that he and the members of the tour’s policy board had made a deal without letting the players know what was going on.  Since then, some players have become much more involved in the negotiations, including Tiger Woods and Patrick Cantlay, while other players like Rory McIlroy have been deeply involved in the talks only to drift away. But the fact that so many players have become involved shows that players want a say in a deal they were not part of initiating. Xander Schauffele was recently quoted as saying Monahan hasn’t stood up and taken the hits in the negotiations for his players and his membership.

What does it mean for PGA Tour events?

One of the key questions of the negotiations is what will the PGA Tour look like once a deal is made. The tour has already changed in recent years with signature events featuring $20 million purses. But what will happen to regular tour events, particularly those outside of the FedEx Cup points period. The American Express in La Quinta has a contract through 2028 with the title sponsor and has featured strong and improving fields in the last decade for its January dates. The tour would likely want to hold on to those kinds of sponsors and events, but the fall events could be in trouble as a new model for tournament schedules comes in.

Are fans still turning their backs?

There was plenty of talk from fans about how the PGA Tour and PIF had abandoned the fans in the chase for money and power. Television ratings showed that fans indeed were tuning out PGA Tour events. That was particularly concerning at the Masters where ratings were down despite a strong Sunday afternoon chase for the green jacket. But that trend might have changed. Ratings for the PGA Championship were up from 2023, perhaps in part because world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler was arrested. But ratings for other tour events have also been up in recent weeks, with Scheffler and McIlroy being part of the leaderboards and Schauffele winning the PGA over Bryson DeChambeau. Maybe fans are just coming back to the game they love.

PGA Tour-PIF framework agreement: Full timeline explored on one-year anniversary

O ne year ago today, the PGA Tour and the Saudi Arabian PIF announced a shock merger agreement with each other after weeks of undisclosed negotiations. Amidst the LIV Golf vs. PGA Tour saga that left the entire golf world split, the merger agreement aimed to serve as a unifying factor for the sport.

In an unexpected press conference, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan and PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan sat together, talking about the combination of the two rival league. During the announcement of the merger agreement, the expected timeline was December 31st, 2023.

There would also be the formation of a new organisation to bring the PGA Tour , the DP World Tour , and LIV Golf under one umbrella - the PGA Tour Enterprises. The announcement of the merger also left many pro golfers, analysts and the audience torn.

June 2023: The PGA Tour and PIF's Senate investigation

The agreement, however, hit a major snag just as the Senator Richard Blumenthal, Democrat of Connecticut, decided to open an investigation about the merger. There were concerns about 'sportswashing' as well as the 'disturbing human rights record of Saudi Arabia'.

Here's what Blumenthal said about the investigation via CNN:

"There's an ongoing Department of Justice investigation, I would intensify it and focus not only on the anti-trust issues, but also on the potential foreign registration questions."

The investigation was taken to the Congress in June and July of 2023 and continued into early 2024. The probe has not ended yet, but did lose steam over the months.

July 2023: Jay Monahan returns after taking leave over mental health issues due to PGAT- PIF deal

During this time, Jay Monahan also received quite a bit of flak from golf stars and the golf world. Several PGA Tour golfers expressed their surprise and disappointment over not being informed or even hinted at regarding the situation that was to come.

He took a leave that lasted for a little over a month, and came back on July 17. Speaking about his leave, Monahan said via Golf Digest:

"I realized that I need to step away and deal with that and to develop the skills to deal with that going forward. Ultimately, you can't wait when you're in a situation like that, and I needed to deal with it. I needed to deal with it for my family and for myself. That was a very hard thing for me."

Monahan also mentioned how the announcement was a hasty one, and could have been publicly declared after a little bit more consideration.

October - December 2023: LIV Golf makes big moves amidst rumours of it being dissolved

The agreement, which was expected to be completed by December 31, also brought about discussions of the future of the LIV Golf Series . While many thought that the Saudi backed tour would be dissolved during the creation of the PGA Tour Enterprises, LIV CEO Greg Norman spoke out for the first time since the agreement.

He said (via SB Nation):

"LIV is and will continue to be a standalone enterprise. Our business model will not change. We changed history, and we're not going anywhere."

During this time, not only did the Series announce its 2024 schedule, but also poached the World No. 3 golfer from the PGAT. In what was a big blow to the PGA, Jon Rahm announced that he would be switching to the LIV Golf Series. Tyrrell Hatton soon followed suit in early 2024.

January - February 2024: PGA Tour hits back with new investment from the Strategic Sports Group

The beginning of the new year also brought about a new investment for the PGA Tour Enterprises. The Strategic Sports Group announced an investment of $3 billion , with $1.5 billion being awarded as equity to Tour players.

Speaking via AP News, Tiger Woods expressed optimism about the inclusion of different minority investors in the game.

"As the tour grows, we grow. So the more we invest into the tour, the more we get the benefits of it, which has never been - it's never happened in sports history. So we're the first. Exciting for me to be able to be part of that."

The negotiations seemed to be making headway soon after SSG's announcement.

March - April 2024: Negotiations make headway with Tiger Woods spearheading the deal

The merger agreement seemed to be making headway, as the player directors, including Tiger Woods, made a trip to the Bahamas to meet Yasir Al-Rumayyan . Talks were held about the vision, the priorities, and the future of golf. Both parties negotiated with an open mindset, and the deal seemed to be taking a positive turn.

In April 2024, it was announced that Tiger Woods would be the sole golfer on the PGA Tour policy board sub-committee that would carry out negotiations with the PIF.

May - June 2024: The PGA Tour policy board falls apart, and one year later there is still no deal on the table

There was a lot of tension regarding the negotiations between the PGA Tour and the PIF. Rory McIlroy , who had stepped down from the PGA Tour board earlier in the year, said that he was open to coming back if it would help further the negotiations.

However, after reports of internal backlash, McIlroy took a step back. Soon after, directors from the Policy Board resigned, with Jimmy Dunne sending out a strongly worded resignation.

On June 6, 2024, the PGAT- PIF merger completed, one year after the announcement. However, there is no clarity in sight so far and the golf world remains just as confused as it was a year ago.
