APANECA CANOPY TOUR - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go
Apaneca Village, El Salvador, and Its Exhilarating Canopy Tour
Apaneca Village and its Exhilarating Canopy Tour
Being the highest village in El Salvador, Apaneca is already an interesting place to visit. With an elevation of 1477 meters above sea level, this low-key and charming village is in close proximity to mountains, volcanoes and lagoons. Still covered by cobblestone streets and houses with clay shingle roofs, Apaneca offers you amazing views of the mountain slopes, fertile lands, and coffee fields.
The village is the end point to the famous Route of Flowers, which goes through the most precious cultural villages in the region. This route can be explored by driving a car, riding a motorbike or quad bike or hiking. There are so many things that will distract you while in this village, from the nicely decorated restaurants to cultural and historical sites, Apaneca will plant a vivid travel memory in your mind.

The duration of Apaneca Canopy tour is about one hour and a half. It is divided into two parts. The first part is all about appreciating the luscious forests, deep valleys and wide range of flora and fauna in the area. The second part involves sliding over rich coffee plantations, which the Apaneca region is world-renowned for.
Apaneca village is situated about 91 kilometers from the city of San Salvador, the country’s capital. It takes about an hour and half drive to reach the Canopy Tour site from the city. A number of visitors opt to book this tour with the local operators based in San Salvador. The tour fee usually includes transport to and from the site.
The Apaneca Canopy is closed on Mondays, and there are specific schedules for the zipline, so make sure to confirm the time with the tour company. A weight limit of 280 pounds or 127 kgs is imposed. Some of the essential things to bring on this tour are comfortable and light clothes, durable walking shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen and other sun protection. Bring a water bottle and don’t forget to bring a small camera. Take note that some operators offer a discount if you’re booking with a larger group, so grab some friends and make your way to Apaneca!

El Salvador
El Salvador is a Central American country bordered by Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. Like all of these countries, El Salvador spent the latter part of the 20th century embroiled in a devastating civil war, the effects of which are still seen and felt today. Despite the proximity of the past and the reports of (mostly gang-related) violence, El Salvador offers many gifts to the intrepid traveler who’s motivated to challenge dominant perceptions. Among these gifts are stunning beach, mountain, and jungle landscapes, friendly people, delicious food, and numerous sites where you can learn about Salvadoran art, culture, and history.

When’s the best time to go to El Salvador?
There’s no bad time to go to El Salvador, but the best is largely determined by your interests. May to October tends to be the rainier part of the year, but it’s also great for surfing, as well as observing turtles nesting along the Pacific Coast. The winter months are perfectly pleasant, with drier weather between November and April. The temperature remains fairly consistent across the seasons, between 55 and 90 degrees F, depending upon elevation. Consider the main cultural celebrations, too. Holy Week (Semana Santa), the Festival of El Salvador (the first week of August), Independence Day (September 15), and Christmas are all celebrated widely throughout the country.
How to get around El Salvador
As is the case with many countries in Latin America, El Salvador’s towns and cities are connected by a bus system with budget-friendly prices. Many American school buses end up in El Salvador after they’ve been decommissioned in the U.S.; here, they’re painted and decorated to reflect the personalities of owners and drivers. The buses are the most convenient, reliable way to get around, but be sure to ask in advance about schedules, prices, and categories of service so you can plan your in-country travels accordingly.
Can’t miss things to do in El Salvador
Like most of its Central American neighbors, El Salvador spent part of the second half of the 20th century embroiled in civil conflict, the effects of which are still being dealt with today. Reminders and explanations of that conflict, in the form of memorials and museums, are found throughout the country. Despite the somber feelings they evoke, these important sites should not be overlooked, even by the leisure traveler who doesn’t have a particular interest in history.
Food and drink to try in El Salvador
Corn is central to El Salvador’s culinary repertoire, appearing in both its food and drink. Without a doubt, El Salvador’s most recognizable food at home and abroad is the pupusa , a thick corn tortilla that is stuffed with a variety of possible fillings, including cheese, beans, and meats, before being topped with a salsa and , curtido , a vinegary coleslaw. Wash it down with atol , a corn-based drink that can be paired with a number of complementary flavors, from pineapple to piñuela (the small fruit of a bromeliad).
Culture in El Salvador
El Salvador is a Central American country that was colonized by Spain in the 16th century. It therefore shares many cultural characteristics with other Latin American countries, despite declaring its independence in 1821. That means, among other things, that Spanish is the official language and Catholicism the predominant religion. As with other countries colonized by the Spanish, El Salvador had indigenous populations, and the contemporary reclamation of their traditions is a movement that is gaining momentum and meaning for many Salvadorans.
For Families
It’s not as well-known to American travelers as Costa Rica, but El Salvador has many of the same attributes to recommend it, including extensive coastline for surfing and beach-oriented vacations, as well as national parks and other landscapes that offer a variety of scenes and habitats, including volcanoes, mangroves, rainforests, and mountains. As a family-friendly culture, Salvadorans tend to be very accommodating of family travelers, with guides and outfitters adjusting both narrative and activity to age-appropriate levels.
Local travel tips for El Salvador
Locals know their country has a bad rap internationally: The civil conflict that spanned 1979 to 1992 may be more than 20 years in the past, but the violence of that period still contributes to a perception of instability and insecurity. And international news reports about current gang activity in the country don’t help ease travelers’ anxieties. But locals also know that the average Salvadoran is unfailingly hospitable, welcoming and warm, ready to show you all of the cultural and natural beauties of their country.

Apaneca is filled with many must-see/must-go places. Here are the most relevant ones.
Laguna Verde and Laguna de las Ninfas. Both lagoons are known for their mystical ambience and stories. Visitors can take a peaceful stroll around the lagoon, enjoy a picnic on the grassy banks and listen to local myths told by locals.
A must-visit landmark in Apaneca is the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción, a beautiful colonial church that dates back to the 16th century. The church’s ornate architecture and historical significance make it a fascinating destination for history buffs and architecture enthusiasts alike. It is also consider as a wedding destination church — in case you were looking for one. 😉

Apaneca’s growing tourism makes it a hot area for real estate investment. If you’re considering real estate investment in Apaneca, you’ll be pleased to know that the town has a thriving tourism industry and a growing expat community. Properties range from cozy apartments to sprawling estates, with prices that are generally lower than those in more developed areas. However, it’s important to do your research and work with a reputable real estate agent to ensure a smooth and successful investment.
And in case you were interested, the name Apaneca comes from the Nahuatl words apán meaning ‘river’ and echecat for ‘winds’, together means ‘wind river’– honoring its cool and windy weather.

With its stunning natural beauty, rich history, and delicious coffee and cuisine, there’s something for everyone in this charming town. ▷ APANECA » What to see and do in this magical town
Apaneca is one of the towns that belong to the ruta de las flores, with an excellent and ideal climate. the village is considered the highest in el salvador, which greatly favors the cultivation and production of coffee..
The best place to share a family vacation in El Salvador is in the town of Apaneca , located in the department of Ahuachapán.
It is an extraordinary tourist destination , with a climate ranging from cool to cold, since the village is considered the highest in Salvadoran lands, which greatly favors the cultivation and production of coffee.

Apaneca Data
Location of Apaneca
History and Characteristics of Apaneca
The first references to Apaneca appeared in 1550. For years its location changed from one department to another. Since 1869 it has belonged to the department of Ahuachapán.
Although it was formerly known as San Andrés de Apaneca , in the Nahuatl language, its name means river of winds, and in 1893 it received the title of the village.
Due to its geographic location , more than 1400 meters above sea level, it is the highest town in the country. It is located 100 kilometers from the Salvadoran capital , and approximately 8000 souls populate these places.
Its inhabitants, the Apanecos, are dedicated to cultivating coffee , considered one of the best in Central America . There is even an exciting production of handicrafts, represented by toys and valuable artifacts, either in wood or clay.
What to see and visit in Apaneca
Walking through the few streets that make up the town of Apaneca , we are surprised by the silence and tranquility breathed here.
It is a beautiful place with cobblestone streets, white one-story houses, and tile roofs in most of them; the climate is delightful, even if it is sunny .
In the center of this charming town is the Church of San Andrés Apóstol .
The old building was built in 1798 and remained standing until 2001 when a powerful earthquake caused severe damage . Since that date, it has been under reconstruction. However, today it shows us its beautiful façade in impeccable white, with colonial details.
A few steps away is the recently inaugurated Plaza Río de Viento , which leads to commercial spaces where you can eat or have a snack and buy typical souvenirs made in Apaneca.
Apaneca’s Patron Saint Festivities and Gastronomy
The celebration of the patron saint festivities , in honor of San Andrés Apostol , takes place between November 21 and 30 and begins with the traditional parade of the mail.
The election of the queen takes place, but also an old tradition, the meeting of the three patron saints.
It happens when the neighbors carry the images of their patron San Andrés , who goes to meet San Pedro Apóstol and Santiago in the middle of the processions. It is the moment for the apanecos to thank for the favors received.
The delicious gastronomy invites tourists to taste simple but delicious dishes such as Indian chicken soup, roasted chicken, fried beans with curd, and divine pupusas . Remember that we are in coffee lands, so it is impossible not to taste tasty coffee.
Nearby places to visit
Among the charms that Apaneca offers is the Route of Flowers , of which this town is part for its scenic beauty. Therefore, there are many options for ecological and natural tourism.
The Albanian Labyrinth is very close to the historic center, formed by thousands of cypress trees; the goal is to enter and look for the exit or the way to get to the center.
Let’s go inland, approximately 4 kilometers . We arrive at Laguna Verde, the crater of an ancient volcano, surrounded by a misty forest full of cypress trees, apart from the varied fauna and coffee crops.
Likewise, the archaeological findings of Finca Santa Leticia, part of the Mayan Route of El Salvador , have been fascinating since they consist of 3 fragments called Los Tres Gordiflones , formed by pieces of round stone where human characteristics have been sculpted.
They are less than 3 km from Apaneca , and it is believed that they belonged to some Mayan rite.
Also, 3 km from the town center, it is located in the crater of an extinct volcano, the Hoyo de Cuajusto , from which you have great views of the country’s west.
We can also hike to Tunco de Monte to observe the wildlife in its splendor.
And 10 kilometers from the town are the Don Juan Waterfalls , spectacular waterfalls up to 35m high and hidden in the municipality of Jujutla. A relaxing place for the sound emitted by the waterfalls , where we can also take a refreshing bath.
As you have already seen, Apaneca is a paradise worth visiting , especially for those interested in bio-tourism or taking a few days to rest from everyday life and reconnect with life.

Trip to Apaneca
One of the things I love about our job is that we constantly get to meet new people and do new things. For the last few weeks we have had the opportunity to meet lots of great people by teaming up with Possibilities International to host a short-term mission team in El Salvador. This organization is aimed at helping dreams come true for the hopeless. They brought a team from Ontario, Canada into El Salvador to build a home, feed the hungry, and serve in poor communities around El Salvador. We were so blessed by getting to spend time with them!
After their week of hard work, they did some “touristy” stuff and we got to tag along! A highlight was a trip to do the zip-lining canopy tour in Apaneca which is far outside of San Salvador. In the day to day work in the city it’s easy to forget all the wildlife and lush cloud forests that make El Salvador so beautiful. Our whole family did the canopy tour and the kids loved it! They have absolutely NO FEAR of heights! Tori has been zip-lining before and she was big enough to go alone this time, and Ian got to ride tandem with Jon. Needless to say, they had a blast zipping hundreds of feet in the air as you can see from the pictures below.
Thanks Possibilities International for your hard work and for reminding us how much fun El Salvador can be!
