Croatia SIM Cards: Everything You Need To Know

by Melissa Giroux | Last updated Apr 29, 2024 | Croatia , Europe , SIM Cards , Travel Tips

Visiting Croatia soon? Make sure to know what to expect when it comes to purchasing a Croatia SIM card .

In this guide, we’ll explain where to buy a SIM card in Croatia in person and online. We’ll also discuss prepaid SIM cards and eSIMs if your mobile supports them.

That said, if you’re traveling to other countries in Europe, you should be able to use the same SIM card because most SIM card providers also offer coverage in other European countries.

Before you read this guide, you may wonder if you actually need a SIM card in Croatia. If you don’t mind not having Internet, you’ll likely find free Wifi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

That said, if you need data to get around, call an Uber, or translate Croatian – you may want to get a SIM card for your travels in Croatia.

Note that your mobile phone provider may already offer Croatia coverage if you’re European. If that’s the case, you won’t need a SIM card for your adventures in Croatia.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Best SIM Cards In Croatia

If you’re traveling in Croatia, we recommend using a SIM card from T-Mobile, A1, Telemach (previously Tele2), or Airalo. (I’ll get back to Airalo later on, so keep reading to learn more!)

That said, if you’re planning on visiting other countries during your trip to Europe, you might want to make sure to pick an option that offers coverage in other European countries.

How To Buy A SIM Card In Croatia

You can either buy a Europe prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport.

That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind. And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

For this reason, I’d recommend buying a SIM card directly from the mobile provider store. Note that you may need your passport to buy one.

Although, this means you won’t get data right upon your arrival. So, if you prefer to be connected at all times, you could use an eSIM or purchase a European prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let’s take a look at the data plans offered by T-Mobile, A1, and Telemach.

tourist Dubrovnik, Croatia

T-Mobile SIM Cards

T-Mobile offers a tourist & digital nomad SIM-only plan for seven days, which includes:

  • Unlimited 4G data for HKR 85 ($10.95)
  • HRK 70 ($9.02) to be paid every additional 7 days.

This is a great option to get unlimited data for your trip to Croatia, but it is only valid in Croatia, it is not available for EU roaming.

A1 SIM Cards

A1 also offers a tourist prepaid SIM plan which includes the following:

  • One week of unlimited 4G data
  • 100 minutes / SMS in Croatia
  • HRK 75 ($9.67)

Please note EU roaming is not included in this package.

Telemach SIM Cards

Telemach offers two different plans for tourists traveling to Croatia.

  • NET2GO: 10 days, unlimited GB, HRK 80 ($10.31)
  • SIM2GO: 30 days, 20 GB, 200 minutes local calls HRK 75 ($9.67)

Overall, we think A1 is the best option if you plan to buy your SIM card in person. That said, any would do if you can’t find their store!

How To Buy A Croatian Prepaid SIM Card Online

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could purchase it online or on websites like Amazon.

You’ll find different plans on Amazon. For example, the Orange Holiday Europe Prepaid SIM Card works in more than 30 countries and gives you 20BG of data for 14 days. Croatia is included.

But there are many other options worth considering, so have a look and ensure the countries you plan to visit are listed.

Browse your options on Amazon

Another option is to purchase a prepaid European SIM card on SimOptions .

They currently offer multiple data plans in Croatia.

Browse your options on SimOptions

Finally, the last option is to buy an eSIM card for Europe.

How To Buy An eSIM Card For Croatia

eSIM is a new concept that allows you to have a virtual SIM card inside your phone. If your mobile phone supports eSIM cards – it’s definitely one of the best options to get data in Croatia.

Curious? Learn more about eSIM for travelers .

I started using eSIM as soon as my mobile phone supported it. To buy eSIMs, I usually use Airalo .

Keep reading to learn more about the best eSIMs in Croatia.

Airalo Croatia

If you want to buy an eSIM for Croatia, you could purchase one on Airalo . This website offers many eSIM cards worldwide and special plans for Europe and Croatia.

I’ve been using Airalo in Europe for several years, and it works fine.

Here are the options available for Croatia :

  • 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $4.50
  • 2 GB, valid for 15 days for $7
  • 3 GB, valid for 30 days for $9.50
  • 5 GB, valid for 30 days for $13
  • 10 GB, valid for 30 days for $21
  • 20 GB, valid for 30 days for $32

Here’s an overview of the options available in Europe :

  • 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $5
  • 3 GB, valid for 30 days for $13

  • 100 GB, valid for 180 days for $185

The options mentioned above are part of Eurolink and offer coverage in 39 countries, including Croatia.

Alternatively, if you’re traveling in other countries that are not mentioned on the list, you can try Discover Global, which offers coverage in 124 countries, including Croatia.

Here’s an overview of the options available on Discover Global :

Now, one important thing to note about Airalo is that you’ll need to keep an eye out for the provider in each country.

Suppose you ever have trouble connecting to the Internet during your trip.

In that case, it might be because you’re connecting automatically to networks and need to select a network manually instead.

When you purchase the eSIM, you’ll get access to the list of networks supported in each country.

Go to Airalo

Holafly Croatia

Alternatively, you could look at your options on Holafly . You can read our Holafly review to learn more about this eSIM store.

I’ve also tried this eSIM provider in Europe, and it worked fine.

They offer the following plans in Croatia:

Final Thoughts On SIM Cards In Croatia

As you can see, getting a prepaid SIM card in Croatia or even an eSIM for your travels in Croatia is pretty easy. You’ll even be able to stay connected wherever you go in Europe without changing your SIM card, especially if you purchase a European SIM card .

I believe the eSIM card is the most convenient way to get data in Croatia if you wish to have data upon your arrival. This way, you won’t need to go to a store to buy a SIM card. Obviously, you need to make sure your mobile phone supports eSIM first.

Buying a Sim Card for Croatia in 2024

a1 tourist sim card croatia

Traveling to Croatia soon planning your trip and wondering what is the best prepaid sim card for Croatia? Don't get stuck with high roaming charges or slow overseas data roaming plans. This is the ultimate guide for finding the best way to stay connected when traveling to Croatia in 2024.

Find out everything you need to know about buying a prepaid sim card in Croatia, a comparison of the prepaid sim cards, up to date prices as per August 2024, the best eSIMs for Croatia, the best 4G/5G network in Croatia, my recommendation, info about EU data roaming, international sim cards and more.

The first thing I do when planning my next trip abroad is finding the best way to get connected. In the past I always used to buy a local prepaid sim card but nowadays I mostly use eSIMs as there is no easier way to stay connected when traveling abroad.

As Traveltomtom is on a  journey to travel to every country in the world I use on average about 40 to 50 prepaid sim cards and eSIMs per year to stay connected and that is how Traveltomtom became the ultimate specialist in sim cards for tourists.

Flying to Zagreb? Then check out my guide for buying a sim card at Zagreb Airport .

Since I am already a full time nomadic travel blogger  since 2012 and I like to document all my travel tips you can find already more than 200 sim card guides on Traveltomtom from all over the world: Europe , Istanbul , Turkey , Rome , Italy , London , UK , New York , USA , Saudi Arabia , Israel , Moscow , Hong Kong , Malaysia , Colombia , Cameroon , Brazil , Colombia , Mexico , Philippines , Vietnam  and many more.

So next time you are planning your adventure abroad come check out Traveltomtom for the latest prepaid and eSIM advice for your next holiday destination. Bookmark me and let me help you save money!

Some links in this article about the best Croatia sim cards are affiliate links. If you buy any of the products after using tan affiliate links I will earn a small commission. Don't worry this is at absolutely no extra cost to you!

Why buying a sim card for Croatia?

First of all to save on high roaming charges. Why waste money when operators keep on charging this stupid amount of $10 a day for internet abroad. Secondly, did you know that your data speed is reduced! Getting an eSIM for Croatia or buying a prepaid sim card in Croatia is easy, fast and cheap and will eventually save you a lot of money.

Yes, your hotel or Airbnb provides free WiFi and so do restaurants and bars in popular tourist destinations in Croatia. In fact the free public WiFi is pretty good in Croatia, but... as soon as you go off the beaten path for example when on a road trip, into the national parks, visiting waterfalls, on a ferry, sailing boat, out on the streets in Dubrovnik, etc. there is NO WiFi.

Being disconnected for a bit is awesome, but also highly inconvenient when traveling. What about ordering a taxi through an app, finding directions on Google Maps or searching for a restaurant nearby with good reviews, finding your friends in a city, etc. Just like in normal life, being connected with data on your phone when traveling to Croatia makes things so much easier and more convenient.

My recommendation

Traveltomtom recommends a T-Mobile sim card for traveling in Croatia. For $13 USD you get unlimited data high speed data for 10 days and the T-Mobile 4G/5G network is by far the best in Croatia.

Buying a prepaid sim card in Croatia takes time, so for those who rather arrive prepared Traveltomtom recommends ordering an eSIM for Croatia on the internet.

You can already order a Croatia eSIM from just $4.5 USD and there are e-sims valid in all of Europe with 30 GB data for $49.90 or just get 1 GB data for 7 days for $5 USD.

Traveltomtom recommends ordering an eSIM for Croatia via SimOptions or Airalo .

If you prefer to receive a physical prepaid sim card delivered to your home address before your trip than consider buying an international prepaid sim card for Croatia on the internet. You can already get 30 GB data for $44.90 USD.

Check out Traveltomtom's  comparison of the best international sim cards for traveling in 2024  and choose the one that fits your trip to Europe.

Best eSIMs for Croatia

The easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Croatia in 2024 is an eSIM. You arrange everything online in just a couple clicks. No more visiting a phone store and swapping physical prepaid sim cards.

You order an eSIM for Croatia on the internet, you receive a QR code, scan it, follow the simple steps and within less than 2 minutes you have a Croatia eSIM installed on your phone.

Upon arrival in Croatia it automatically connects you to an available network and you enjoy data on your phone pretty much when the plane lands.

Make sure your phone is e-sim compatible before ordering an eSIM for Croatia.

  • 30 GB data + 120 minutes international + unlimited calls/text for 14 days = $49.90 USD
  • 50 GB data (5G ready) + unlimited calls/text for 28 days = $59.90 USD

Click here to order an international eSIM for traveling to Croatia .

There is also a third eSIM provider that Traveltomtom has used and it is called Nomad . They often have great eSIM deals but they will need to work on reliability and performance before Traveltomtom starts recommending them more. Traveltomtom has faced some issues with the installation of the eSIMs in the past.

Before ordering an eSIM for Croatia make sure your phone is unlocked and e-sim compatible otherwise an eSIM won't work on your phone.

If your phone is not e-sim compatible but you still would like to order a sim card for Croatia online then a great alternative is a physical prepaid sim card for Croatia. These prepaid sim cards will be delivered to your home address before your trip.

You can already get 10 GB data + unlimited calls/text in all of Europe for $24.90 USD. SimOptions is the only sim card provider who offers physical prepaid sim cards for Croatia. Click here to order a physical prepaid sim card for Croatiaorder a physical prepaid sim card for Croatia .

Croatia sim cards and free EU roaming

Although Croatia is part of the EU and also Schengen as per January 2023 there should be no roaming costs if you already have a sim card from Italy , Denmark , Sweden , UK , Germany  or any other country in Europe.

The other way around when buying a prepaid sim card in Croatia and traveling onwards to other European countries you should be able to use your data at no extra costs as well. However, this does NOT count for the tourist sim cards you buy in Croatia!

But be aware that these Croatia tourist sim cards are only valid in Croatia. So if you are on a road trip in the Balkan be ready to get a prepaid or eSIM separately for every country or get yourself and international prepaid sim card or an international eSIM for traveling in the Balkan.

When buying a prepaid sim card in Croatia always ask about the free roaming limitations when traveling onwards to other European countries.

But whatever they will tell you, trust me, Croatia prepaid sim cards are NOT good for traveling in Europe! Check out my article about the best Europe sim card for tourists in 2024  and I tell you everything you need to know how to stay connected during your Europe trip.

Or check my guide for buying a local prepaid sim card in Europe  on arrival with all my tips for when you are traveling to Europe and wondering which prepaid sim card to buy and much more information about free EU roaming.

Mobile internet operators in Croatia

There are three mobile internet operators in Croatia: T-Mobile Croatia, A1 and Telemach Croatia. All three providers offer Croatia prepaid sim cards for tourists.

Where to buy a sim card for Croatia

a1 tourist sim card croatia

The best places to buy a prepaid sim card for Croatia are in the city centers of any big tourist destination and city. T-Mobile, A1 and Telemach all have shops in Zagreb, Zadar, Pula, Dubrovnik, Split, etc. The Croatia sim card deals you find at the international airports are more expensive, but more convenient.

When in the city use Google Maps to determine the nearest mobile internet shop by just typing in the by you preferred mobile internet provider in the search bar.

Zagreb Airport

a1 tourist sim card croatia

As of August 2024 they sell prepaid sim cards for tourists from Telemach, A1 and T-Mobile at the Tisak convenience store in the Arrival Hall. Click here to read my complete guide for buying a sim card at Zagreb Airport in 2024 .

Split, Dubrovnik and Zadar Airport

I have done research online about buying a sim card at these airports in Croatia and found out that every airport sells the same prepaid sim cards in the Tisak convenience stores, like at Zagreb Airport.

Convenience stores / gas stations

In Croatia it is NOT necessary to bring your passport when buying a prepaid sim card. Prepaid sim cards are NOT registered on your name. This makes it possible to buy a prepaid sim card for Croatia in the bigger convenience stores. In Croatia they are called: Tisak, INA, iNovine and Hrvatska Posta. At bigger gas stations they also sell prepaid sim cards. The sim cards you buy here are self service and you will need to activate them yourself. It is not my first recommendation for tourists traveling to Croatia.

The easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Croatia is to order a sim card online. As soon as the plane lands you can enjoy a data connection on your phone. You can order international physical prepaid sim cards , international eSIMs and eSIMs for Croatia right now on the internet and get it done in just 2 minutes and there is no need to find a sim card shop once you arrive in Croatia.

Best 4G/5G mobile network in Croatia in 2024

Prices for prepaid sim card plans for tourists are not the only thing that determines the best sim card for traveling in Croatia. In fact the mobile data network coverage is actually even more important. Therefore let's compare the  4G/5G networks coverage maps for Croatia  for 2024 and find the best 4G/5G network.

Is there 5G in Croatia?

Yes, there is 5G in Croatia and it is actually pretty ok. As per August 2024 you can find 5G in most of the popular tourists destination in Croatia. On my recent trip in Croatia I enjoyed a 5G signal most of the time in Zagreb, Zadar, Split and even in Plitvice National Park, but it depends which sim card you buy.

a1 4g 5g network coverage map croatia 2024

Telemach 4G/5G network coverage map

telemach 4g 5g network coverage map croatia 2024

Although the above mobile data network coverage maps are updated for 2024 they are not 100% accurate. However, they are a great reference to compare the 4G/5G networks of the mobile internet providers in Croatia in 2024.

From the above coverage maps we can clearly see that T-Mobile has the best 4G/5G network in Croatia in 2024 . Telemach also covers most tourist destinations in Croatia with a 5G signal, but for road trips in Croatia T-Mobile is definitely the recommend sim card for tourists in Croatia.

So for people that go on a sailing trip in Croatia the best prepaid sim card is T-Mobile. T-Mobile has the strongest network around the islands by far.

Best prepaid sim card for Croatia in 2024

After comparing all the prepaid sim cards for tourists in Croatia Traveltomtom comes to the simple conclusion that all mobile internet providers are pretty much offering the same prepaid sim cards and they are affordable.

Great thing about buying a prepaid sim card in Croatia is that the tourist sim cards include unlimited high speed data.

The biggest difference between the mobile internet operators in Croatia is the mobile network coverage. T-Mobile has by far the best 4G/5G network in Croatia and therefore T-Mobile is the best sim card for traveling in Croatia in 2024.

The mobile internet providers in Croatia do not offer eSIMs. If you want to buy an eSIM for Croatia then simply order one online. Traveltomtom recommends ordering an eSIM for Croatia via SimOptions or Airalo .

1. Should I Buy a New SIM Card for My Croatia Trip?

a1 tourist sim card croatia

When visiting Croatia for a week or more and consuming large amounts of data, it would be wise to buy a new SIM card among various mobile internet options in Croatia . You might also consider that it can be of importance if planning on visiting remote areas. Here are some of the benefits of buying a new SIM card for your Croatia trip:

  • Lower roaming charges : Roaming calls can be quite costly; thus, it pays off to purchase a Croatia SIM card, especially if you’re planning to use a huge amount of mega data. Check Roaming in Croatia to know if you still want to use your own SIM on your Croatia trip.
  • Better data speeds : Most international roaming providers operate at a slower speed than Croatia mobile operators.
  • More data options : Fortunately, Croatia’s mobile operators have several data plans to ensure you get what you need within your pocket.
  • Better network coverage : This includes even remote areas of Croatia as Croatian mobile operators have good network coverage across their country.

In case you want to buy a new SIM card to use on your Croatian trip, you can purchase the same from any of the big Croatian telecom operators such as HT, A1 Croatia, and Telemach Croatia. Most newsstands, supermarkets, gas stations, post offices, and mobile phone stores offer SIM cards.

2. Croatia SIM Card Types – Which One is the Best for Tourists?

There are a few main types of SIM cards available for tourists visiting Croatia:

For most tourists, prepaid Croatia SIM cards are the best choice. They provide affordable rates and flexibility perfect for short vacations. eSIMs also work well for tech-savvy travelers with compatible devices.

3. How Much Data Is Enough for a Prepaid Tourist SIM Card for Croatia?

For a short 1-2 week trip , a prepaid SIM card with 5-10GB of data is generally sufficient when combined with WiFi at accommodations. This allows for periodic maps/navigation, social media, light web browsing, and email throughout your days.

Travelers who plan to heavily stream video or music may want to opt for a 15-30GB data plan. For longer visits of 2 weeks to 1 month+, larger data packages in the 30-50GB range are recommended.

However, it’s possible to add unlimited data packages for an additional fee as needed. Monitoring your usage and topping up data mid-trip is easy.

4. How Much Does a Croatia SIM Card Cost?

Prepaid Croatia SIM cards are very affordable, typically priced between 50-200 Kuna (~7 – 30 USD). Exact costs vary slightly between providers:

The card itself usually costs 50-100 Kuna (~ 6 – 14 USD). This includes some initial talk time credit.

Data packages are affordably priced from 100 Kuna (~ 14 USD) for 5GB up to 300 Kuna (~ 41 USD) for 30GB or more.

For heavy data users who stream video regularly, unlimited data add-ons are available starting at around 200 Kuna (~ 21 USD) per month depending on the carrier.

Overall, Croatia SIMs provide great value compared to roaming rates from other countries. You get excellent connectivity at low prices.

5. Croatia eSIM – Alternative to Physical SIM Cards

croatia esim plans

In addition to physical SIM cards, eSIMs provide a convenient alternative for unlocking mobile data in Croatia. An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card embedded directly into your phone or device.

The main benefits of using a Croatia eSIM include:

  • No need to insert a physical SIM card. Convenient if your device has limited slots.
  • Remotely switch between data plans and providers via an app.
  • Access data immediately upon arrival vs. finding a store.
  • Avoid potential loss/damage concerns of physical SIM cards.

However, eSIM compatibility is still limited on some device models like iPhones. Check if your phone supports eSIM before purchasing. Overall, eSIMs offer a high-tech experience that may appeal to certain travelers.

Traveling to Croatia? Get connected from the moment you land with an eSIM from croatiaesim.com . Plans start at just $6 for 3 days of fast 4G data. No SIM swapping needed – simply scan and go. Choose from multi-day packages up to 30 days. Install with a few quick taps to keep your number.

6. Where to Buy a Croatia SIM Card?

There are two main options for purchasing a Croatia SIM card:

6.1. Buy eSIM online

For eSIMs, you can buy conveniently online ahead of your trip through providers like croatiaesim.com and others. Rates are similar to or lower than in-person SIMs.

6.2. Buy a physical Croatia SIM Card

Physical SIMs can be purchased in person upon arrival at:

  • Airport kiosks after you exit customs at major airports like Zagreb or Split. Look for provider kiosks in SIM cards in Croatia airports post.
  • Mobile carrier retail stores like Croatian Telecom T-Com are found in most cities, especially easy-to-find SIM cards in Zagreb .
  • Supermarkets like Konzum, gas stations, and newspaper kiosks also commonly sell SIMs.

Tisak store

When purchasing in person, bring your passport as proof of ID. Also, be sure your phone is unlocked for use on foreign networks.

7. How to Use Croatia SIM

Using your Croatian SIM card is straightforward:

  • Insert the SIM card into your phone (or download eSIM). Restart device.
  • Choose the preferred carrier network from the settings to connect.
  • Top-up credit/data packages as needed by buying top-up cards at stores or online via your carrier account.
  • Monitor data usage and turn off cellular when on WiFi to conserve data balance.
  • Access mobile data and make calls as you normally would at local Croatian rates.
  • Switch back to home SIM when departing Croatia.

It’s that easy! The carriers make topping up talk time or data easy during your trip.

8. Best Mobile Operators for Croatia SIM Cards

The top Croatia mobile carriers are:

  • Croatian Telecom “HT” – Part of Deutsche Telekom group. Fast, reliable 4G LTE coverage. Physical shops common for support.
  • A1 – Owned by A1 Telekom Austria Group. Solid 4G speeds and value prepaid SIM offers.
  • Telemach – Croatia’s third largest network. Prepaid SIM services with competitive rates and a 4G network.

Major providers offer prepaid SIM cards designed for tourists. HT and A1 have the widest networks in the rural parts of the country. Compare rates to get a good value for it. Other carriers like Telemach, among others, allow for eSIM purchases via online shops and app as well. This allows increased flexibility if you require a digital SIM.

9. Tips for Saving Data for Croatia SIM Card

To get the most out of your Croatia SIM data plan follow these tips:

  • Opt to use WiFi where you can find it (lodges, restaurants, etc.). Large downloads and streaming should be done using WiFi.
  • Turn off auto updates and synch for background apps that consume the data in rapid succession.
  • Limit navigation data usage by using offline maps such as Google Maps Offline mode.
  • Turn on data saver browsing in your device’s settings.
  • Keep a close tab on usage and provide additional data packs or unlimited booster packs as necessary. Do not wait until you are fully out. Turn cellular data on only when you are away from home. Disable when on WiFi.

Make prior plans to avoid surprises in Croatia SIM expenses and check this guide to make the most of your cell phone in Croaita .

10. FAQs about Croatia SIM Card

Can i get a free croatia sim card.

Unfortunately there are no opportunities currently for getting a completely free SIM card in Croatia. The major carriers don’t offer free SIM deals. However, SIMs are very affordable priced as low as 50 Kuna for the card and some initial credit. The low prices make Croatia SIMs a great value for tourists.

Can I use a Croatia SIM in other European countries?

Croatia SIM cards only provide service domestically within Croatia. They won’t work for roaming in other EU countries. If traveling to multiple countries in Europe, consider a pan-European SIM with roaming capabilities or buy separate country SIMs.

Is registration required for a Croatia prepaid SIM card?

No registration is required for prepaid tourist SIMs in Croatia. You only need to show your passport when purchasing the card in-person for identity verification. All prepaid plans are anonymous.

Can I use 4G/LTE with Croatia SIM cards?

Yes, Croatia’s networks and prepaid SIMs fully support fast 4G LTE data connectivity across the country. All major cities and most rural areas have modern 4G coverage. 5G networks are still limited at this time.

How long is a Croatia SIM card valid for?

Prepaid SIMs in Croatia are valid for several months, typically 180 days. However, the included credit and data packages expire faster, usually 30-60 days. So you need to top up regularly during your trip. There is no obligation to keep using or extending the SIM after your trip ends.

11. Conclusion

When in Croatia, make sure to consider buying an affordable prepaid Croatia SIM card as one of your priorities. Accessing mobile internet and cellular call over a single phone line ensures safety, convenience, and economy at the same time instead of roaming fees. The country’s key providers provide amazing coverage and competitive prepaid SIM deals for the tourists. A Croatia SIM card allows one to conveniently be linked up at any time on the move without having to be worried about the expenses. The good thing is that unlocking Croatian connectivity makes your trip hassle-free whether you choose a physical SIM card or an eSIM. Enjoy your stay in Croatia!

Best SIM Cards In Croatia

Trying to figure out which telecom company offers the best SIM card deals for tourists can feel quite overwhelming. To help you with this task, today I’m going to go over the best SIM card options available in Croatia .

In this article, I will give you a general overview of the different options offered by the main mobile providers in Croatia so you can decide for yourself which is the best Croatian prepaid SIM card for your trip.

RECOMMENDED

Need an esim.

If you’re short on time, check the options from our most recommended providers for mobile internet around the world: Airalo and Nomad.

SIM card options available in Croatia

Croatia has 3 major telecom companies through which you can pick up a SIM card: Hrvatski Telekom, A1, and Telemach.

Let’s start by going over the SIM card options they have for tourists.

Hrvatski Telekom SIM card options for tourists

Hrvatski Telekom is T-Mobile branch in Croatia. They have the widest and fastest 4G and 5G coverage in the whole of Croatia (they’ve even won awards for it). So, getting a SIM card from Hrvatski Telekom is a great option for travelers who will be working remotely or exploring the lesser-known areas of the country.

Hrvatski Telekom offers two prepaid SIM packages in Croatia exclusively for tourists and travelers:

  • The first costs €9.90 or 74.59kn , and it offers 80GB of mobile data for 30 days . This package only offers 4G speed .
  • The second has a slightly higher price point costing €11.49 or 86.57kn for unlimited mobile data for 10 days . Alternatively, for just a little more you can pick up a package that offers 70GB of mobile data for €11.95 or 90.04kn . The higher price point for this package is down to it offering 5G speed.

You can check more information on Hrvatski Telekom’s official website .

There are also options available to top-up your account if you happen to be staying longer than 30 days, or if you use up all your data. If a top-up is necessary, you can do it online by downloading the Moj Telekom HR app. Another option for topping up is to pick up a Simpa voucher from a T-Centar, petrol station, post office, newsstand, or supermarket.

One thing that is important to note is that despite Croatia being in the EU, your tourist SIM card with Hrvatski Telekom will only work inside Croatia – it won’t grant you free data roaming across the rest of the EU. So if you plan on traveling to other destinations in Europe within the same trip, you may want to consider another option ( continue reading to check our tip).

A1 SIM card options for tourists

Next up we have A1, which is also a major player in the telecom market boasting over 24 million customers throughout Europe. They have excellent network coverage throughout the country, but overall Hrvatski Telekom still takes the top spot in terms of coverage.

A1 offers one prepaid SIM card option for Croatia dedicated to tourists. This package offers 5G speeds provided that your phone has 5G capabilities.

For just €10 or 75.35kn, you can get access to a tourist package that lasts for 10 days , with unlimited mobile data . Where A1 differs from Hrvatski Telekom is that it also offers up to 100 minutes/SMS messages to local Croatian numbers.

You can top up your A1 account online through the A1 app and the company’s webpage. Recharge your balance at physical locations including ATMs, post offices, A1 stores, and petrol stations.

Unfortunately, the prepaid SIM card for Croatia from A1 also doesn’t offer EU roaming – it will only work within Croatia. If you need more information, check the A1 website directly .

Telemach SIM card options for tourists

Telemach is the third major company operating in Croatia. They are a large telecom company operating throughout the whole of Southeastern Europe.

The coverage offered by Telemach was often considered the worst among all three providers because they didn’t have coverage in Croatia’s rural areas. However, as of 2023, Telemach’s 5G coverage now extends across the whole country, putting all three providers at a similar level.

Telemach has two prepaid SIM card packages available to tourists in Croatia:

  • NET2GO – this prepaid SIM card offers users an unlimited amount of GBs for 10 days . It costs €9.95 or 75kn .
  • SIM2GO – coming in at €9.95 (75kn) too, this Croatian tourist SIM is valid for 30 days . In terms of data, this SIM offers just 10GB for a duration of 30 days. However, you will get 200 minutes of local calls.

There’s no information on whether Telemach offers 4G or 5G on their site. However, I did contact their customer service team who informed me that their SIMs are not 5G enabled . So, you’ll only have 4G speeds with a Telemach Croatia SIM card for tourists.

Top-ups can be done by texting various codes listed on their website. You can also top-up through the app, or using vouchers brought online, in Telemach stores, newsstands, supermarkets, post offices, and petrol stations.

Once again, Telemach tourist SIM cards only offer coverage for Croatia – outside of Croatia they won’t work. Read more on Telemach’s official website .

Which is the best Croatia SIM card for tourists?

For a trip of 10 days or less.

The best prepaid SIM card in Croatia for short trips is the one offered by A1 . It costs only €10 and gives you unlimited data with 5G speed. It doesn’t get much better than this.

Additionally, A1’s package also gives 100 free minutes of calls and texts to local numbers. Even though I never use calls at home, they can come in handy when traveling, especially if you will be renting apartments via Airbnb or Booking. Having the possibility of calling your host can be extremely helpful.

For a trip of longer than 10 days

For a trip longer than 10 days to Croatia, my recommendation does change.

In this case, Hrvatski Telekom’s 1st package is the best deal for anyone who wants a prepaid SIM card for their Croatia trip. For only €9.90, you will get 80 GB of data for 30 days, which is a very good value.

The main trade-off with this package is that it doesn’t have access to 5G speeds.

However, I only recommend this package if you will be staying only in Croatia . If you will be visiting other countries within the same trip, you may want to consider other options that have better international coverage. See my recommendation below .

Croatia sim cards

Best SIM card for traveling to Croatia and other European countries

If you will be visiting multiple European countries within the same trip, instead of buying a SIM card for each destination, you may want to consider picking up an eSIM instead.

With an eSIM, you can easily get EU-wide coverage or you can select the exact countries you will be visiting and tailor a plan exactly to your needs.

Our favorite eSIM providers are Airalo and Nomad. We have used their mobile plans in multiple countries and have always had great experience.

What is the best SIM card for Croatia and Slovenia?

It depends on which country you will be visiting first. If Slovenia will be your first destination, you can buy a Slovenian prepaid SIM card with EU coverage such as the HoT plan, and use it for both destinations.

However, if you will be visiting Croatia first, the best option would be to buy an eSIM because the Croatian prepaid SIM card options do not offer EU coverage. In this case, get a quote with Airalo or Nomad to avoid the hassle of having to buy a SIM card in every country.

What is the best SIM card for Croatia and Montenegro?

Since Montenegro is not part of the EU, most local prepaid SIM cards will not offer the option of data coverage in both countries.

In this case, the best choice is to get an eSIM from Airalo or Nomad and tailor a plan to your needs.

Where to buy prepaid SIM cards in Croatia?

SIM cards are widely available all over Croatia, so you should have little trouble finding them. Here are the options of places you can buy prepaid SIM cards from each of Croatia’s main telecom companies.

  • Hrvatski Telekom – You can buy a Hrvatski Telekom SIM card at T-Centars, Tisak (convenience store), iNovine (newsstands), and post offices. You can also arrange to have a SIM delivered to you for free .
  • A1 – You can buy A1’s SIM cards in A1 stores, newsstands, petrol stations, supermarkets, convenience stores and post offices. You can also order your A1 SIM online here .
  • Telemach – Like the other two mobile providers, you can buy a Telemach SIM from all the usual stores including Telemach Shops, newsstands, supermarkets, post offices, and petrol stations. There’s currently no option to order a Telemach SIM online.

It’s worth noting you should be able to buy a SIM card at all major Croatian airports upon arrival . Just head for the nearest convenience store in the airport (probably a Tisak). I’ve done this multiple times when visiting Croatia. Just make sure you don’t fall for the overpriced international mobile plans they sometimes offer.

Best eSim For Croatia (Connect Anywhere, Anytime)

Traveling to Croatia and you want to have Internet access while you’re there? Then you’ve come to the right place because this detailed guide to the best travel eSims for Croatia includes all the top options for tourists!

I’ve also included a few options for local physical sim cards, which offer better value for money than international eSims, so consider those if your phone still supports physical sim cards. Another option is Europe-wide eSims , but they are usually a lot more expensive.

At A Glance: Best eSim Providers in Croatia

  • Best unlimited data Maya Mobile
  • Perfect for 1GB Airalo
  • Cheapest Croatia eSim Nomad
  • Best For Unlimited data Holafly

Whether you need just a gigabyte to be able to send emails and check Google Maps, or you’re looking for unlimited data so you can work while you’re traveling, you’ll find several great options in this guide to the best eSim for Croatia!

ESIM Product Comparison

a1 tourist sim card croatia

Maya Mobile

a1 tourist sim card croatia

Maya Mobile has some great plans for a prepaid eSim in Croatia, especially if you want data for 30 days. In particular, their unlimited data eSim is the cheapest you can get!

Maya also prides itself on the allowance of tethering/hotspots (which Holafly does not) and they usually work with the best mobile providers in each country two. In the case of Croatia, they work with Tele2 and A1 and offer 4G connections.

Their packages are quite flexible with either specific GB or unlimited for use in 30 days, which is handy if you don’t want to rush to use that 3GB in a week, which many companies like Airalo make you do.

Here are their 30-day plans :

  • 1 GB for $5
  • 3 GB  for $9
  • 5GB  for $12
  • 10GB for $20
  • Unlimited data (30 days) for $49
  • Unlimited Data (Europe) / 30 Days for $49

As you can see above, there are lots of options. And, if you are traveling to more than one European country, you should definitely take the last (Europe) package!

  • Hotspot/tethering allowed
  • Great unlimited data options
  • Best local service providers
  • All packages 30 days
  • Not the cheapest per GB for small packages
  • No mobile app yet

Airalo is one of the most popular Croatia eSim providers because they offer reasonable plans that are perfect for tourists. If you don’t need unlimited data and you’re fine with having just a couple of GBs you can use to check Google Maps and send emails, an Airalo eSim is a good option for you.

Airalo Croatia

Their eSim plans for Croatia start at just $5 and are great if you don’t need lots of data. Here are the plans Airalo offers in Croatia:

  • 1 GB / 7 Days for $5
  • 2 GB / 30 Days for $10
  • 5 GB / 30 Days for $15

Airalo’s regional Europe eSim plans are also valid in Croatia and many other countries, so consider these plans if Croatia is only one of a few countries you’re planning to visit.

  • Reliable eSim Provider
  • Lots of GB size packages
  • Mobile app to manage eSims
  • No unlimited data

a1 tourist sim card croatia

Nomad has multiple  eSim data plans for Croatia , which start at $6 for 1 GB (valid for a week), and go up to $35 for 20 GB (valid for a month). They’re approximately 20% more expensive than Airalo, so I wouldn’t recommend them for one of the cheaper plans with very little data.

BUT, they are great for 10 GB or above. For those plans, they have the cheapest prices per GB! Check out the plans below to see what I mean.

  • 1 GB / 7 Days for $6
  • 3 GB / 15 Days for $12
  • 5 GB / 15 Days for $14
  • 10 GB / 30 Days for $19
  • 20 GB / 30 Days for $33

Nomad Croatia

But they are good value for money if you want one of the bigger plans which the other providers don’t really offer. It’s also worth noting that Nomad has regional data plans for Europe that include Croatia. They include only 4G LTE internet access and no phone number, but that’s standard for all international eSims.

The regional plans are a good option if you’re going to be visiting other countries in addition to Croatia.

  • Mostly 30 days access
  • 20 GB plans available
  • Mobile app to manage things
  • No 5G access yet
  • More expensive

a1 tourist sim card croatia

Holafly  is another very popular international eSim provider known for unlimited data plans. All Holafly eSim data plans offer unlimited data, and the price depends on how long the plan is active. The eSims start at $19 for 5 days and go up to $99 for 90 days.

Holafly Croatia

While Holafly eSims are extremely convenient, it’s important to note that they do not offer data sharing, meaning you can’t set up a hotspot and connect other devices to the WiFi network. If that is something you need, choose a package from Maya Mobile , they allow it!

  • No tethering/hotspot

Orange Holiday Zen eSim

a1 tourist sim card croatia

The  Orange Holiday Zen eSim  is an excellent option for travelers who have plans to explore other European countries, in addition to Croatia. This is an all-inclusive eSim that provides you with a (French) phone number, 8 GB of mobile data, and free minutes/texts to other numbers in Europe and worldwide.

Orange Holiday Zen eSim

This is the cheaper version of the Orange Holiday Europe prepaid eSim and it retails for some 20 Euros. The eSim is valid for two weeks, and you can easily extend that period by purchasing additional credits.

However, if you want to keep using the eSim for more than a month, you will need to register the eSim on their website, as per French laws. It’s important to note that you can use both the mobile data and the phone number in 30+ countries in Europe without data roaming.

  • Comes with a phone number
  • Great for Europe-wide travel
  • Not the cheapest option

Orange Holiday Europe eSim

Orange Holiday Europe  eSim is another all-inclusive eSim for 30+ European countries. This one retails for 40 Euros, and it includes 20 GB of (4G LTE) mobile data, lots of free minutes/texts to numbers in Europe and the rest of the world, and a French phone number that allows you to make calls and send texts without paying for roaming charges.

Orange Holiday Europe eSim

This eSim is also valid for 14 days, and you have the option of extending the validity by purchasing additional data. Registration of the eSim is necessary for customers who want to use it for more than a month.

Ubigi is a popular international eSim provider that usually has great offers for countries in Europe. They don’t have an individual-country plan for Croatia, but the country is included in 15 of their regional data plans, which range from $2 to $88. So, if you need an eSim that is valid in multiple European countries (and wider), definitely consider Ubigi as your provider.

Ubigi Croatia

The data plan that I think is the best value for the money is the monthly 5 GB plan for 27 countries of the EU, the UK, and Switzerland. It’s $15, and the eSim stays valid for as long as you keep renewing the plan. They also have a 20 GB recurring monthly plan valid in the same countries, and that one is just $29. If you need the extra data, it’s absolutely worth it!

  • Good for lots of countries
  • Good for longer stays
  • Not the cheapest

Benefits of Getting an eSim in Croatia

The main benefit of getting an eSim while you’re traveling in Croatia is that you will always have internet access no matter what. You can simply land or arrive in the country and have data. No need to run to a store and go through all the hassle of getting a sim card.

While the capital city of Zagreb has decent free WiFi coverage for tourists, that’s not the case with most other cities and you will need an eSim if you want to have Internet access at your fingertips throughout your trip.

If you have plans to explore some of the country’s many stunning beaches, especially on the islands, you’ll definitely need an eSim for Internet access since most of the coastal towns don’t have free WiFi coverage.

I can’t live without eSims anymore. I have been to over 8 different countries lately and I only ever use eSims. I organise them before I arrive or just as I arrive. And BANG, within minutes I am online and ready to have an awesome vacation or work trip.

Local Mobile Operators Offering eSims in Croatia

A1 and T-Mobile are local operators that offer eSim cards in Croatia, but only for local customers . In other words, their prepaid tourist packages are available only with the purchase of physical sim cards.

It’s worth noting that Telemach also operates in Croatia, and it’s an even better option if purchasing a physical sim card tourist package is an option. I’ve had a poor experience with A1 because of their poor network coverage more than once, so I wouldn’t necessarily recommend them.

Also, Telemach offers a tourist sim card package that’s valid for 10 days, for the same price (approximately 10 Euros) as both A1 and T-mobile packages, which are valid for only a week. All providers offer packages with unlimited mobile data during the duration of the data plan, plus you have the option of purchasing more data or additional days when the initial data runs out.

One advantage of purchasing a physical sim card from a local network operator is that you will have no issues creating a hotspot to share your WiFi. And since they all offer unlimited data plans, you can work, watch movies, listen to music, and do pretty much whatever you want on the Internet.

You can also top up the sim card with cash, and use the money to make calls and send texts. Unlike with eSims, physical sim cards provide you with a local phone number that can come in handy sometimes.

Devices Compatible with eSim in Croatia

eSim Phones

Devices that are compatible with eSim cards in Croatia are all devices that have eSim card functionality. These are usually phones that have been released in the past 4-5 years, so Android and iOS flagships released from 2018 onwards.

It’s worth noting that eSims are still a fairly new technology, and they’re not included in every single smartphone out there. While all newer Apple phones have it, if you’re using an Android as a daily driver you will need to check whether it supports eSims. The easiest way to do this is to dial *#06#. If you can see an EID (eSim Identification) number, it means that your phone supports an eSim.

Data Needed When Traveling to Croatia

The amount of data you need when traveling in Croatia really depends on what you want to use the data for. If you just want Internet access to be able to talk to friends, access social media, and check Google Maps, you should be fine with plans that have a limited amount of data.

It really depends on your personal use, but I would guess that you don’t need more than 2 GB per week if you’re not going to stream videos or music.

On the other hand, if you want to be able to stream videos, and music, and even work on your laptop, your best bet is an unlimited data plan. Some Croatia eSim cards include unlimited data for a select period of time, and this is generally the best option for travelers who want to stay connected throughout their trip and not worry about how much mobile data they’ve spent on any given day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is esim available in croatia.

Yes, eSim is available in Croatia, but you’ll have better luck if you purchase it from one of the international eSim providers than if you try to find a local provider. While many local mobile operators offer eSim cards for local users, they don’t really offer (prepaid) eSim plans for tourists.

How can I buy an eSim in Croatia?

Since the local operators don’t offer eSims for tourists, you’ll need to buy an eSim online if you’re purchasing it after you’ve arrived in Croatia. Just visit the website of any one of the international eSim providers featured in this guide, and select the plan that seems like the best option for your needs.

If you are also okay with physical sim cards, you can buy those at most kiosks and network operator shops throughout the country.

How do I activate my eSim in Croatia?

Activating an eSim is very easy and you just need to follow the instructions that you received with the purchase of the Croatia eSim data plan. This usually entails either scanning a QR code (if you’ve provided one with the eSim card) or manually adding the eSim through your phone’s settings. The first time you turn on mobile data and connect to the Internet, your eSim is activated.

Communicating without financial turmoil amid Croatian escapades demands savvy choices, steering clear of wallet-draining network tolls. To tackle this issue, snag a nifty Croatian SIM card, unlocking a realm of budget-friendly data sways, talk liberties, and text exchanges. Navigating the labyrinth of SIM cards in Croatia before your touchdown? Not a breezy stroll.

A common oversight among travelers is not considering their connectivity requirements until after they've touched down. Currently, the only available mobile SIM carriers might be costly airport booths or less-than-satisfactory prepaid packages. The astute traveler understands the importance of researching trusted providers and planning to ensure they have a SIM card ready upon arrival.

Emerging amidst the market currents is the eSIM, the best SIM card for Croatia that allows for the seamless activation of a local data plan on your mobile device before departure. Unfortunately, the widespread adoption of eSIM is not yet universal, as not all devices and service providers participate in this digital collaboration. The straightforward tariff solution for those without eSIM capabilities involves acquiring a traditional SIM card in Croatia.

This article aims to guide you through your Croatian data SIM card choices, be it digital or physical. We'll explore the top local providers, data packages, coverage zones, and convenient locations to obtain a SIM card in Croatia. This way, you'll stay connected without breaking the bank, allowing you to fully experience your Croatian journey with the ease of a local phone number.

The mobile network infrastructure in Croatia stands out, offering tourists a range of practical options to stay connected while on the go. While roaming with your home carrier is feasible, choosing a local SIM card or a hotspot device guarantees better coverage at notably reduced rates. Here's an overview of the critical wireless internet solutions you can consider:

  • Purchasing a Croatian SIM Card —The simplest and most cost-effective choice involves purchasing a prepaid SIM card from one of Croatia's mobile service providers. Prominent carriers such as Hrvatski Telekom, A1, Telemach, and Bonbon provide specialized tourist Croatian cell phone data plans featuring ample data allowances. These SIM cards are readily available at airport kiosks, carrier outlets, and numerous convenience stores nationwide.
  • Renting a Portable WiFi Hotspot – A pocket WiFi hotspot is an excellent alternative for groups or individuals needing substantial mobile data. These battery-operated gadgets establish a private WiFi zone, connecting multiple phones, tablets, and laptops simultaneously. Numerous companies providing tariff hotspot rentals offer the convenience of online reservations for device pickup at Croatian airports or hotels.
  • Using an eSIM Digital Data Plan —A growing phenomenon capturing attention is the eSIM, which offers the ability to download a data plan directly to your smartphone's embedded SIM card slot. Despite being a technology in its infancy, considering prepaid data SIM card in Croatia becomes a practical alternative, provided your phone is eSIM compatible and your service provider accommodates this feature.

With multiple mobile internet access solutions available, tourists can carefully weigh their needs and choose the most suitable option before arriving in Croatia. Next, we'll examine the top SIM card providers and data packages worth considering.

Croatia has several major mobile operators offering affordable Croatia tourist SIM card packages for travelers. The most popular providers include Hrvatski Telekom (T-Mobile brand), A1, and Telemach. Here are some of their top data offerings:

  • A1 Tourist SIM: Unlimited data at 5G speeds for ten days, 100 mins/texts to Croatian numbers - €10
  • Telemach NET2GO Tourist SIM: Unlimited data for ten days - €9.95
  • Hrvatski Telekom (A1 Croatia) Prepaid Data SIM: Unlimited wireless mobile internet in Croatia for ten days - €11.49
  • Orange Holiday Europe SIM: 8GB data for 14 days, unlimited EU calls/texts, 600 mins/500 texts worldwide - €30
  • T-Mobile Tourist SIM: 10GB data for ten days - €12.99
  • ese are just examples of what is currently available in the Croatian service market. These options are the most common choices for any tourist visiting the country.

People recommend them to each other, but are they perfect? Later in the text, we will explore some options of mobile internet providers in Croatia that might be more attractive to the end user, albeit less well-known. There are also some significant drawbacks, especially when considering roaming.

While purchasing a local Croatian SIM card is generally the most cost-effective solution for mobile data, some travelers may prefer to use their existing home mobile plan and roam in Croatia. However, roaming fees can quickly become expensive, and rates are often difficult to estimate accurately.

Most major national carriers offer travel passes or cheap mobile internet Croatia packages for Croatia and the surrounding region. For example, carriers like AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile in the US have European data roaming add-ons that provide a set tariff data allowance for a daily or monthly fee. Similarly, European providers like Vodafone and EE have "roam like home" options covering Croatia.

The problem with these roaming packages is that they're rarely valuable compared to local SIM cards. Daily fees can easily exceed €5-10 per day, with monthly fees upwards of €50 for just a few gigabytes. Data allowances are also usually quite limited compared to prepaid tourist SIMs with Croatia unlimited mobile internet.

Another inconvenience is managing and switching between different roaming plans for each country on your travels. If your roaming package runs out mid-trip, you may pay excessive per-MB rates until you can renew or change plans.

Constantly adjusting broadband connection roaming and keeping track of usage takes the ease out of your travels. While roaming can provide a seamless mobile data experience for shorter stays, the savings and simplicity of a local SIM card for internet in Croatia are superior for most budget-conscious tourists and digital nomads exploring Croatia for longer periods. Next, we'll cover the best options for easily acquiring a SIM card once arriving in Croatia.

Best Available local SIM carriers in Croatia

With the high costs and hassles of roaming laid out, it's clear that acquiring a local Croatian SIM card is well worth exploring for most visitors to maximize their data connectivity and savings during their stay. In the sections ahead, we'll dive into the top mobile providers and their best-prepaid data offerings so you can hit the ground running with affordable SIM cards in Croatia picked up right upon arrival.

The Ultimate Guide to Staying Connected with SIM Cards and Mobile Data in Croatia

One of Croatia's largest and most robust networks comes from T-Mobile, which operates under the Hrvatski Telekom brand. Their prepaid tourist offerings provide an excellent blend of generous data, affordability, and countrywide cell phone coverage.

  • Getting a T-Mobile SIM – Visitors can easily purchase a T-Mobile prepaid SIM for €10, which includes their "Unlimited data for ten days" package right out of the box. This makes it an ideal hassle-free option to get connected immediately upon arrival. Some of their postpaid plans also include the free best SIM card for Croatia.
  • Data Packages – The €10 unlimited 10-day data package is perfect for short stays, providing unrestricted Croatian data SIM card for navigation, messaging, social media, and even light streaming during your visit. For longer trips, affordable add-ons like €11.95 for 40GB over 30 days also offer great value.
  • Coverage Strengths—Where T-Mobile truly excels is its network's reach across Croatia, including excellent coverage along the country's many islands and remote coastal areas. Thus, travelers exploring Croatia's beautiful island regions can stay connected without issue.
  • Roaming Limitations—It's important to note that T-Mobile's Croatian cell phone data plans are for use within the country only. Their add-ons and SIM plans do not include roaming data for other countries. So, these SIM cards are best suited for Croatia-only travel rather than exploring multiple nations.

While not the cheapest SIM option, T-Mobile's package flexibility, ample data allowances, and unparalleled coverage make them an excellent choice for most visitors to Croatia looking for a reliable mobile data solution.

A1 logo

Another major player in Croatia's mobile market is A1, formerly known as Tele2 and VIP, before a rebranding in 2018. A1 offers a competitive prepaid data SIM card in Croatia packages alongside robust national coverage.

  • Getting an A1 SIM – Purchasing an A1 prepaid SIM card in Croatia typically costs 30-50 kuna (€4-€7) depending on the selected tariff package. These can be acquired at airports, A1 retail stores, and third-party vendors nationwide.
  • Data Packages—One of A1's most popular tourist data offerings is their "Croatia tourist SIM card," which provides unlimited high-speed data for ten days for just €10. They also have attractive prepaid data add-ons for extended stays, like 30GB over 30 days for €20.
  • Coverage and Speed—A1 has continually invested in expanding its 4G/LTE and 5G networks across Croatia to provide customers with excellent cell phone coverage and fast data speeds in all major cities and travel destinations.
  • Roaming Options – While A1's prepaid data packages are for use within Croatia only, their postpaid and prepaid plans include attractive EU roaming at no extra cost. They also offer roaming bundles at reasonable rates with generous allowances for other European countries and the Balkans region.

With simple plug-and-play prepaid wireless mobile internet in Croatia packages, unlimited short-term data options, and solid coverage even in rural areas, A1 is a reliable and affordable choice for travelers who want ample data without overpaying.

For visitors looking for low-cost mobile internet providers in Croatia, Tomato (formerly Tušmobil) is worth considering as one of the smaller virtual network operators.

  • Getting a Tomato SIM—Tomato prepaid SIM cards can be easily acquired for around USD 3 (22 HRK) from common locations like supermarkets, gas stations, post offices, and street kiosks across Croatia. There's even an online promotional offer, though it is limited to one SIM per customer.
  • Data Packages – While not as generous as some larger carriers, Tomato has reasonably priced data add-ons for the cheap mobile internet Croatia users, like 20GB for 120 HRK, valid for 30 days. Short-term travelers may opt for their 4GB data package, valid for ten days for 40 HRK.
  • Coverage Considerations – As a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), Tomato utilizes the network infrastructure of other carriers like A1. This can result in decent but Secondary coverage in some areas compared to leading operators like A1's network.
  • Roaming Included – One significant benefit of Tomato is that all their prepaid plans include EU roaming at no extra cost, as Croatia is part of the European Union. Using your Croatian SIM while traveling to other EU nations won't incur additional charges.

While other carriers offer more robust broadband connection packages, Tomato is a good budget choice for visitors just looking for basic data connectivity for things like maps, messaging, and light apps without burning a ton of data. Their low Croatia unlimited mobile internet costs and included EU roaming are also appealing.

For groups of travelers or those requiring a lot of mobile data during their Croatian adventures, renting a pocket WiFi hotspot can be an excellent solution. These portable battery-powered devices create a personal WiFi zone that multiple phones, tablets, and laptops can simultaneously connect to and share the internet connection.

The easiest way to take advantage of this option is to purchase an affordable SIM card for internet in Croatia with a generous data package from one of the mobile operators. Then, insert that SIM into the unlocked portable WI-FI hotspots. This allows you to avoid excessive roaming fees while providing enough data bandwidth for your travel group's connectivity needs.

Some key benefits of using a rented or purchased hotspot with a Croatian data SIM include:

  • Connect all devices at once without juggling separate SIM cards in Croatia.
  • Potentially faster speeds sharing the mobile tariff connection.
  • Use as a mobile hotspot anywhere without hunting for public WiFi.
  • Avoid surprise roaming charges from your home mobile carrier.

You can check out these popular Croatian cell phone data plans that have caught the attention of tourists planning to travel to Croatia:

  • RoamingFree Ninja WiFi Hotspot. This well-known service provides unlimited data hotspot rentals for Croatia, starting at around USD 6 per day, such as a SIM card for Zagreb. Buy SIM card at airport!
  • MyWebspot Pocket WiFi. Another solid choice is MyWebspot's hotspot rentals, including generous high-speed data packages tailored for different travel durations in Croatia.
  • Wifivox Portable WiFi. For more extended stays, services like Wifivox allow renting or purchasing a dedicated portable WiFi hotspot to use with a Croatian data SIM card for ultimate flexibility.

Whichever pocket WiFi solution you choose, having a fast, shareable internet source beats hunting for public WI-FI hotspots or racking up roaming charges while exploring Croatia's beautiful cities and parks with your travel companions.

While having a prepaid data SIM card in Croatia or renting a portable hotspot provides ultimate mobile data freedom, savvy travelers can also use free public WI-FI hotspots nationwide. Accessing complimentary wireless internet, even slower or spottier than your typical, helps reduce data usage when you aren't online.

In reality, those who seek will always find. You can explore the following options available to every tourist in certain situations:

  • Tourist Centers and Public Spaces—Many major tourist hubs and public squares, especially in larger cities like Zagreb, Split, Rijeka, and Dubrovnik, offer free municipal WiFi networks. Look for the network name on your device when in these areas.
  • Restaurants, Cafes, and Hotels—Many bars, cafes, restaurants, and hotels throughout the country offer free wireless mobile internet in Croatia to patrons. When patronizing these establishments, you may need to ask staff for the Wi-Fi name and password. Higher-end hotels often have the most decisive lobby and room Wi-Fi speeds.
  • Transportation Hubs – Most airports, ferry/cruise ports, bus terminals, and some train stations have complimentary wireless internet in their main waiting areas and lounges for travelers.
  • Retail Stores and Malls—As in many countries, the shopping malls, large retail stores, and some supermarket chains offer accessible cheap mobile internet Croatia networks for customers. Network names and password access are posted near entrances.

While the availability and quality of free public WiFi can vary, it helps supplement your paid mobile data solution and reduce overall costs during your Croatian travels. Just be cautious on unsecured public networks.

Those requiring even more hefty data amounts or extended validity periods may prefer topping up a local Telemach or Bonbon prepaid data SIM card in Croatia with add-on data buckets offering dozens of GBs for reasonable rates. Just be sure to customize according to your expected download needs.
