2003 GMC Safari back hatch won't open?
I experienced the same issue with my 2003. What i did, get in the van, go to the back door. Take a "philip & flat" screwdriver" with you. Remove the covers on the handle ends using the flat screwdriver. Then using the philips remove the screws, and the handle will come off. Use the flat screw driver, to "gently" pry the plastic window trim. It won't come off completely, but enough for you to see the locking control arms. These are metal bars running to both sides of the hatch. Look at the main body, where the arms meet. The ends of these bars are bent 90 and they must be inserted into the holes of the moving bars. What happens is the contol bars pop out and therefore the door will not release. When you reconnect them, it will. Simple fix. Do it yourself. Put the handle back on. Note : before doing press the button, you should hear the actuator working, if not replace the actuator. Easy to do.

Rear Hatch wont open
- Add to quote
Hey all Did a search but couldn't find much. Essentially the rear hatch won't open. Don't have and never did have a remote unlock remote for the car. Always just used the key in the drivers side and the power lock button. Was able to get some of the trim loose on the rear door to where I can see some of the mechanism but since the door is closed I can't completely get to it. It all feels/looks ok from what I can see, so I'm wondering if there is a specific fuse or relay that controls the rear hatch unlock?? Thinking maybe it's that and not a mechanical fault? Didn't see anything in the owners manual though. Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

dont these have a small round cap at the bottom of the tailgate? 03 Trailblazer and 2010 Traverse both have these...so yours may have it also. you pop off the cap- and it gives you access to the mechanism of the lock. It allows you to use a screwdriver to push a tab to unlock the 'lock'. you have to access it from the inside of the vehicle..

Google Maps Not Working: 7 Ways to Fix It
Now you'll never get lost again
You’re driving along and suddenly Google Maps navigation is not working properly. Either the app is crashing, the app is navigating in the wrong direction, or Google Maps can’t find a proper route for you at all.
These issues with Google Maps have a number of different causes that create many different behaviors. In this guide, you’ll learn about which fix to use for the Google Maps app problem that you’re experiencing.
In most cases, Google Maps will stop working properly because of an issue related to the software itself. For this reason, it’s important to start from the simplest solution (updating the app) and work your way down to the more complicated solutions (checking phone settings).
We’ll walk you through each of these steps in this guide.
1. Update Google Maps
Google frequently updates software to patch bugs or close any security holes. For this reason, it’s important to make sure your Google Maps app is up to date.
- Open the Google Play app on your device and search for Google Maps.
- Search for “Google Maps”.
- Select the green Update button.
- Wait for Google Play to finish installing the app updates.
- Select the green Open button to relaunch Google Maps.
To avoid running into this problem again, consider making Google Maps update automatically.
- Instead of selecting Open, tap the name of the app, Google Maps .
- Select the three dots at the upper right to open the menu.
- Select the checkbox to the right of Enable auto update .
- Select Turn on in the confirmation window.
2. Recalibrate the Google Maps Compass
Google Maps utilizes the sensor in your phone called the magnetometer in order to determine what direction your phone is pointed.
This sensor works by measuring the strength and direction of the Earth’s magnetic fields around you. This provides very accurate compass functionality, but like a regular compass, it can be influenced by magnetic or electromagnetic fields around you. This can be from other electronic devices like computers, television sets, and more.
The result of that interference is that the magnetometer isn’t quite as accurate as normal. Strange Google Maps behaviors that result because of this include:
- Difficulty pinpointing your exact location on the map.
- Inaccurate determination of your direction, resulting in the map spinning back and forth.
- Incorrect determination of services and businesses near you when you search your map.
Fixing this issue requires recalibrating the magnetometer. Don’t worry, this is an easy process and only takes less than 30 seconds.
- Open the Google Maps app and tap the little blue dot that shows your current location.
- Select Calibrate compass at the bottom left of the screen.
- Follow the instructions in the pop-up window (move your phone in a figure-eight pattern with a small twist at each end).
- When finished, you’ll see a confirmation that your phone’s compass is now calibrated.
Note : You’ll also notice another option to calibrate with Live View . If you choose this option, you can point your camera at store signs or public buildings around you, and Google Maps will use this information to determine your location and the direction you’re standing.
Once you’re done calibrating, restart your phone and launch Google Maps again.
3. Enable Location Permissions
If Google Maps can’t pinpoint your location at all, it’s possible that the Location settings on your phone aren’t set properly for the Google Maps app.
- Open your Android Settings and select Apps.
- Scroll down to the Maps app and select it.
- Select Permissions .
- Select Location .
- Make sure Allow all the time is selected.
Once you’ve updated this setting, restart your phone and confirm that Google Maps is now working properly for you.
4. Turn On High Accuracy Location
If you’re still having problems with Google Maps locating your position accurately, you may want to make sure you’ve enabled high accuracy mode for your Android location .
This mode will use GPS satellites in addition to Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and nearby cell towers to improve the accuracy of your position. Without High Accuracy, Google Maps won’t use GPS for your location and won’t work properly.
- Open Android Settings and select Location .
- Scroll down to Google Location Accuracy and select it.
- Make sure the toggle to the right of Improve Location Accuracy is enabled.
Restart your device and relaunch Google Maps. Check that the accuracy of your position in Google Maps is now working properly.
5. Clear Google Maps Cache and Data
Like most apps, Google Maps will retain information about where you’ve been, your map searches, and more. This information is contained in the app’s cache.
Sometimes, the data in the cache can get outdated or even corrupted. Clearing the cache and all saved data for Google Maps can resolve issues with Google Maps not working.
- Open Android Settings and select Apps .
- Scroll down to Maps and select it.
- Select Storage .
- Select Clear cache at the bottom of the screen.
- Select Clear data at the bottom of the screen.
- Select OK on the confirmation window.
Once you’re finished, relaunch Google Maps and check if the issues you were experiencing are now resolved.
6. Reset Google Play Services
While it’s rare, sometimes issues with the Google Play app cache can affect installed apps on your Android. Clearing the app for Google Play services can resolve unusual issues with Google Maps.
- Scroll down to Google Play Services and select it.
- Scroll down and select Storage .
- Select Manage storage at the left bottom of the screen.
- Select Clear All Data .
Now relaunch Google Maps and check that it’s now working properly.
7. Reinstall Google Maps
If all else has failed, you’ll need to completely uninstall and then reinstall the Google Maps app. This will reset all settings and app permissions back to default and should fix all issues you’ve been experiencing with Google Maps.
- Launch Google Play and search for “Google Maps”. Tap the name of the app.
- On the app page, select Uninstall .
- On the confirmation window, select Uninstall .
- In Google Play, search for “Google Maps” again, and select Install .
Once installed, launch Google Maps again, and hopefully, at this point, all issues you were experiencing with Google Maps are all resolved.

Door locks not working, and unable to open Dutch doors.
- Add to quote
So I recently bought this 2000 GMC Safari. When I bought it I could open the dutch doors, and the power locks worked (if I recall correctly). I defiantly could open the hatch. I pushed in the cigarette lighter to test it, and now it can not come out. The power doors stopped working, and I am unable to use the rear cargo area until I fix the door locks. I opened the rear hatch and discovered that it is not a mechanical latch, but an electrical switch, so my key won't help me open up the cargo area. I took out the fuses and replaced the burnt out one. #13 for the cigarette lighter was burned out. That didn't fix it. So I replaced the front power door lock relay. Still nothing. Last night I checked the fuse/relay box under the hood and found that the huge fount 30a fuse was burned out (It wasn't before) So I changed that out, still no power locks. I am thinking that maybe the cigarette (which is still stuck in the pushed down position might have something to do with it) I am planning to just uninstall it I guess, and see if that solves the issue. I looked at a lot of threads and it seems that it is a mistake to have a cigarette outlet on the same circuit as your power locks. My other power out lets work, so Maybe i can splice it into the circuit that powers the two out lets on the passenger side of the dash. I would really like my power door locks to work, because I don't have a key fob, and I would like to get an auto start to solve that issue, but they wont install it until I get this door lock issue solved. Anyone have any suggestions or experience to share?
The external key on the rear dutch door is an electrical switch as you said and you should hear it activate with ignition off. The hatch button on the dash is wired for the transmission to be in park to prevent accidental opening while moving. The rear hatch is on a seperate circuit from front doors if I remember right?. Have you checked the childproof switch on the backside of the sliding door? Your on your own with the front door locks, mine are manual.

Thanks Bubba, I actually don't know about the switch on the dash to open the back hatch. I don't think I have one? Where was your's located at? If I have one it's really hidden well. I hope I do, that might make life easier.
Thanks Will, I'll pull that lighter out today and hopefully I can at least have access to the back. If I can't get the front locks working, I'll have to shop around for some actuators. The yard by me doesn't have any vans, but I think I read somewhere that the actuators they use are pretty standard in several GM models.
Not sure exactly why, but as far as dash located pushbuttons for rear hatch: some trucks are "haves" and some are "havenots." I had one of the "haves," a 93. Uncle Bob
So I guess I am one of the "have nots" for a hatch button on the dash. I ended up unplugging the front cigarette lighter from behind the cover, it looks like more than one auxiliary outlet is on this circuit. I changed the #13 fuse again and I now have a working drivers side door lock, also the rear hatch button is working. The passenger side button works to lock and unlock the drivers side, but both the passenger side door and rear door are not unlocking or locking. I suppose that means I need new door actuators for those doors. At least we are getting somewhere now.
When you take the door apart to get to the actuator, test to see if you get 12v on the wires. The actuators are actually electric (reversable) motors that drive a rack and pinion gear system. If you have 12v and -12v between the two wires that connect to the actuator, as per "lock" and "unlock" at the switch, then the actuator is bad. No 12v means there is an electrical problem. Keep on chugging... Uncle Bob
I have a 2004 n 2003 my 2004 if I drive down the highway doing 75 n the driver's side window is down about inch n passenger side is down half way n the side windows r open my driverside door will open n the driver's window will bother open more. Then slam shut. So I locke the driverside n it still opens which has cause my dutch doors to lock n I do not have the fob key at all. So under dash a fuse was replaced n it worked good now it's happening again but my cigarette lighter is not so how does going down highway do this .it's like a back draft is causing the door n window to open more n door is locked anyone else got this problem
Sounds like all kinds of crazy going on there. Worn out latches would be the first thing I would be replacing if your door is popping open. Then worry about the wiring/switches/etc for the windows later.

Before you start trying to tear out the back hatch covers,Check the cigarette lighter 20 amp fuse. under the dash and think there is another one in the power wire line. Those panels won't come off without tearing them apart. Also the hatch will only open if the van is in neutral or park.

The "hatch" (upper rear door) on my '97 Safari recently started not latching on the passenger side. In fact it won't close all the way on that side. Barn doors work fine.
