  • What to Ask During an Apartment Tour

An exterior view of a blue brick apartment in NYC with a red door, white window flower boxes, and greenery.

Upon moving to New York City on my own , I was completely swept away with the idea of what my ideal apartment would look like – from my decorated outdoor balcony , large airy windows, and which neighborhood I would grab coffee in. After tours upon tours of units before finding the one that best fit my specific needs, design taste, and personal lifestyle, I came up with a solid list of questions to ask the property manager or leasing consultant. For New York City residents, and those moving to New York for the first time, apartments are the way of life, so keep this list handy as you schedule those tours!

Moving to the Upper East Side?

What are the Lease Terms?

From month-to-month or year-to-year, one of the first points of discussion with a landlord is understanding the basic, but most important, terms of your lease. Have these questions written out and jot down the answers for your own records:

  • What date is rent due, and is there a set grace period to pay it?
  • Exactly how much is due every month?
  • Will rent increase during certain times of the year?
  • How should rent be paid: electronic, check, or cash? (Always ask for a receipt or proof of payment)
  • Are any utilities included? (Heat, water, gas, electric, garbage disposal, doorman services)
  • Do I need renters insurance?
  • What are the terms for property managers to enter my apartment?
  • If I need to move during my lease, is subletting the unit allowed?
  • How and when do I get my security deposit back?
  • Is it a no-fee apartment ?

What are the Building’s Security Features?

Many luxury apartment buildings in New York City have friendly doormen to wish you a great day in the morning, greet you when you get home, collect packages and deliveries, and monitor the security of the building. Besides having a doorman, ask the property manager how safe the neighborhood is. Better yet, pick the brains of current residents and get the inside scoop on their first-hand experience.

Besides front entrance safety, familiarize yourself with other entrances and exits of the apartment building. In case of a fire and the elevators stop working, where are the stairwells and fire escapes located? In addition, is each apartment unit equipped with a smoke detector, fire extinguisher, or sprinkler system? If your apartment is close to the ground level, are the windows locked? How well lit are the entrances, exits, parking garages, and hallways? Remember what your parents told you: Safety first!

A set of light blue and white dishes and bowls on a wooden table.

What Kind of Changes Can I Make to the Interior?

Blank white walls don’t give the warmest welcome to your new apartment – let’s be honest . As a huge fan of HGTV, Pinterest, and my security deposit, I have quite a few boards dedicated to apartment-friendly decorating ideas. (A lot of which are DIY!)

Most leasing agreements state that the apartment must be cleaned and returned to it’s original state upon moving out – which brings us to looking at acceptable decor options. From painting accent walls to hammering nails to hang frames and accessories, get written consent from your landlord on what’s allowed. You can still have fun with accent furniture, especially from Canvas Home ! Structural changes are almost never allowed, and always remember that if you make a change or cause damage to the apartment’s interior, it could cost you your security deposit!

My Favorite Design Accessory: Removable wallpaper. I have a faux-wood accent wall in my dining room that gives the space an extra homey touch of character. The best part? No glue, no damage, and it peels right off!

Are There Additional Storage Options?

It’s no secret that space can get tight in NYC apartments – especially if you want more of it. With this fact in mind, luxury apartment buildings often offer additional storage space for rent. This is a great option if you’re an avid cyclist and need a place to store your bike, or if you love to ski on the weekends and need a safe place to put your gear in the warmer months.

A bull dog and his owners stand on a subway platform in New York City.

Are Pets Allowed?

Pets are members of the family to some (I am one of those “some”), and this could be a huge deciding factor in whether or not you sign a lease. To save yourself time before scheduling an apartment tour, call the leasing office and ask what their pet policy is. Since apartments are so common in NYC, and can often be on the smaller size, many landlords will have size and breed restrictions. If your cat, dog, rabbit, bird, or any other furry friend you have fits the bill, scope out how pet-friendly the building is.

  • Is there a dog play area?
  • Are there safe, well-lit walking trails or parks nearby?
  • Do I need to climb X amount of stairs to bring my dog in and outside?
  • Is my dog a barker? Will he be disruptive to neighbors?

Whether you’re a current pet parent or are thinking about adopting in the future, check out our guide to living with dogs in an apartment !

Am I Given a Parking Spot?

If you’re one of the few people to own a car in New York City, always ask the landlord if parking is available at your prospect building. Some complexes have on-site parking garages, others may offer a discounted rate to park your car at a nearby garage, and some may not have parking at all. You may be left with the option to use metered street parking, but this can be hard to find and expensive. Regardless of your parking needs, remember that this will tag on an extra bill every month, especially if you’re apartment hunting on a budget.

Stock Up Your Tenant Toolbox

Who Can I Contact for Emergency Repairs?

It seems that faucets begin to leak and windows won’t open when you need it most, right? The best way to prepare for the unexpected is to know 24/7 maintenance is just a phone call away. Ask the property managers what services the maintenance teams cover, how they can be reached, and their normal hours.

My Golden Maintenance Tip: Don’t try to fix it yourself! Sure, if you need to swap batteries in a light, have at it. But if your oven won’t turn on, or the bathroom vanity is spilling water on to the floor, leave it to the professionals to take care of. After all, you don’t want to cause more damage!

A Welcome Home floor mat at a front door.

What are the Residents Like?

The apartment is beautiful. The amenities are top-notch. The management team and doormen make you feel welcome and safe. There’s even a dog-friendly park across the street. You and your roommate even agree! But how are your new neighbors? If there’s one tip I always keep in mind as I walk around a potential apartment building, it’s to notice tenant etiquette . Do they say “Hello” in passing? Do they hold doors for others? Are they simply friendly? You want to start and end your day on a positive note, right!?

You may not always see your neighbors, but you may hear them! If you’re a busy professional, you may want to live on a floor with others who have similar schedules. This would avoid hearing late night footsteps above you or music from the unit across the hall.

If you happen to run into a current tenant, ask what their experience living in the building has been like, and how fellow residents are as well. Property managers maintain the building part time compared to tenants, so take advantage of their information!

WHERE IS THE FRIENDS APARTMENT BUILDING?

It's located at 90 Bedford Street at the corner of Grove Street.

Reaching the building used for the exterior shot of the Friends  apartment building is relatively easy, thanks to a major subway junction less than a 10-minute walk away.

It's best to use our Google map to get directions to the building .

Where is the Friends Apartment in New York City

Most visitors will find it best to arrive at West 4th Street Station, which can be accessed by the A, B, C, D, E, F, and M subway lines.

A closer station is Christopher Street, but this station can only be accessed with the 1 train, which is a local train.

If you are coming from New Jersey or from further north, you might find taking the PATH train to the PATH's Christopher Street Station. PATH accepts NYC subway MetroCards.

Above is a map image showing the subway stations. The red circle on the very left of the map is for the PATH station.

If you are new to the NYC subway, then read our guides on navigating the system and how to choose the best MetroCard .

The Friends  Apartment is also a stop on our GPS-enabled audio tour of the Village, which you could take any time you like.

How to Find the Friends Apartment

Central Perk

Though few people are surprised that there is no Central Perk on the ground level, it's quite obvious by visitors' reactions that they were hoping there might be.

Rather than a coffee house below, there is a restaurant called the Little Owl.

The Little Owl does not resemble the layout of Central Perk, but it's a place you might want to check out for lunch or dinner. The restaurant has excellent reviews .

If you want to see Central Perk and some of the other locations from the show, there's a pop-up exhibition called the Friends Experience which has recreated a lot of the best sets in this popular tv series.

Some of the most well-known Friends sets have been meticulously recreated on two floors full of interactive exhibits.

COULD THEY REALLY AFFORD TO LIVE IN GREENWICH VILLAGE?

In the Friends  television show, the actors are never filmed in New York City.

All of the shots were in a studio in California, except for London in the finale of season four. Even the fountain scene opening the show was filmed in California.

Several issues arose in depicting the Greenwich Village building as the home for Monica and Rachel, and Joey and Chandler.

Monica’s apartment is a two-bedroom unit in an area of Greenwich Village that boasts rents of $3500 a month just for a studio apartment.

During the program, Monica worked as a cook — Rachel sort of served coffee in the first season — and Monica periodically had no job or worked at positions that would not support paying the rent on this size apartment.

The writers and producers said the apartment needed to be large so the audience could see what the actors were doing.

Friends was filmed in front of a live studio audience. Action and conversations had to be visible to the audience, so the floor plan of the apartment was wide open and large.

It looked nothing like a typical New York City apartment.

The writers explained away the problem of the size and its cost as “an illegal sublet.”

This was Monica’s and Ross’s grandmother’s apartment, a rent-controlled unit, and Monica had taken it over.

In New York City, buildings older than 1947 with six or more rental units are rent-controlled.

The city tells landlords how much they can increase the rents based on the length of the lease, which has often resulted in rents much lower than market value.

Some bloggers have said it would have been impossible to obtain the apartment shown at $300 a month, as discussed in the TV program, even in the 1990s.

But, down the block on Commerce Street, a four-bedroom, 1200-square-foot unit rented by an 80-something-year-old gentleman was going for around $332, according to the New York Times. Rent control!

Other issues with the  Friends Apartment Building are obvious! The apartment has a balcony in the TV series. None exists on the exterior of the building shown.

In the first year, the Ugly Naked Guy lived across the street, and the Friends spied on him periodically.

In the last few years, Ross lived in the building across the street, and they peeked out into his windows. Not actually possible with the location.

But do not let this deter you from following the Free Tours by Foot tour guides down Grove Street to Bedford Street to view the Friends  Apartment building for yourself.

Stand outside, and take a photo.

Their landlord hiked their rent by 25%, so they applied for the NYC housing lottery. On the 25th try, luck was on their side.

  • A millennial couple won the New York City affordable-housing lottery after applying about 25 times.
  • Brynne McManimie, 35, and Peter Romano, 34, now live in a $2,800-a-month apartment in Brooklyn.
  • "It was unusually fast. I don't think that's the case for most people, but we got very lucky," McManimie told BI.

Insider Today

In 2021, Brynne McManimie and Peter Romano lived in a one-bedroom apartment in Greenpoint, Brooklyn . Due to the pandemic, they had gotten a good deal on their lease and paid $2,600 in rent each month. But that didn't last long.

"After a year, our landlord raised our rent by like 25% and it made us very nervous about staying in that apartment," McManimie, an actor and teacher, told Business Insider. Their new rent was $3,300 a month.

"That's when we were like, 'OK, let's just try the housing lottery,'" McManimie added.

For Romano, a New Yorker, and McManimie, a West Coast transplant who has been living in New York for 13 years, the affordable-housing lottery was one of those things they had always heard about.

"It's one of those things that was always talked about in our circle of friends because, as artists, there's also artist housing in New York and we know many people who have lived in those," McManimie said.

The decision to apply for the affordable-housing lottery was also sparked by their desire not to give up some of the perks they were already used to in Greenpoint — such as having a washer and dryer in their unit.

"A lot of these new buildings with the housing lottery are nice and have a lot of good amenities, but they're a lot more affordable and in our price range," McManimie said. "So that prompted us to go for it."

A pipe dream for most

The affordable-housing lotteries are run by the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development, or HPD, and the Housing Development Corporation.

Although applying is free, each household must meet specific income requirements to qualify for a lottery apartment. These vary across developments depending on unit size and location.

But winning the housing lottery is a pipe dream for most applicants: In 2018, The New York Times reported that the odds of winning were 1 in 592 .

But luck was on the couple's side.

"This actually happened very fast for us," McManimie, 35, said. "I think we applied to this building in April 2023. We were contacted in May to submit documents but didn't hear from them until September."

By early October, they had already signed the lease and moved in.

"It was unusually fast. I don't think that's the case for most people, but we got very lucky," McManimie said, adding that they had applied to about 25 different buildings.

$2,800 a month

The couple's one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment in Clinton Hill came with a balcony. It's a corner unit, so they have neighbors on only one side.

According to the latest May data from RentHop.com, the median monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Clinton Hill is $3,750.

"It's definitely smaller than our old apartment," McManimie said. "The kitchen and the living room are all one big room, but everything is brand new. We're the first people to live in this unit."

It also had all the amenities they wanted: a dishwasher, a washer-dryer, central AC, and heating.

The couple signed a two-year lease on the apartment and now pay $2,800 monthly rent.

Related stories

"Since it's rent-stabilized , they can't raise it like a ton," Romano, an actor and professor, told BI. "Which is honestly really attractive to us, given what happened with our last landlord."

Every year, the Rent Guidelines Board decides the percentages by which landlords can legally increase rents for rent-stabilized apartments. In 2023, the board voted to raise rents on one-year leases by 3%, and on two-year leases by 2.75% for the first year and 3.2% for the second year, per The New York Times .

The day they moved in, it felt like a weight off their shoulders.

"I felt relieved, honestly," Romano, 34, added. "Our financial situation — with this rent amount — was going to feel very good. And I remember when we sat down on the couch after the day, it was like, 'Okay, I can breathe a little bit.'"

McManimie felt the same.

"I was a little nervous about downsizing even more. But after a couple of days, I didn't really notice," McManimie said. "Our building has a rooftop deck; we have a lounge upstairs to work in with a beautiful view of the city. We have a gym and a giant lobby."

Although the apartment is small — about 550 square feet — it still feels like they have a lot of space, she added.

A work in progress

Design-wise, the couple's apartment is bright and colorful with midcentury influences.

McManimie is behind the decor, while Romano is the one who's responsible for building their furniture.

"Since our space is so small, we looked for furniture with storage. Our coffee table, one of our stools, and our bed has additional storage," McManimie said. "We also store things under our couch and above our cabinets."

Other furniture pieces are from a vacation home they previously owned in Poconos with McManimie's father.

"We sold it before we even applied for this apartment since it made us a little ineligible for a while," Romano said. Those applying for rental units through the housing lottery aren't allowed to own residential property in or within 100 miles of New York City limits.

Although they were sad to see it go, it's been nice not to have to manage a property, McManimie added: "I think people don't always realize how hard it is to be a homeowner."

Even now, they aren't done decorating their apartment .

"Our bedroom is definitely still a work in progress," McManimie said, adding that she's looking for an antique mirror for the space. She also shared that she has an antique desk in storage that she's planning to use as a vanity.

A 'life-changing' opportunity

Their biggest tip for anyone who wants to apply for the housing lottery is to have all the financial paperwork on hand during the application process.

"Your tax returns, your pay stubs — they asked for all of that information in quite a quick amount of time to turn around," Romano said.

There's also no point in applying for apartments that fall outside your income range since "they're going to weed you out immediately," McManimie said.

Applying for the housing lottery requires a lot of paperwork and many people end up unsuccessful in their bids, but it's still worth a shot, she added.

"If you're unhappy with your situation or your rent is too high , you might as well try," McManimie said. "You have to decide what your priorities are."

Ultimately, the apartment situation worked ouy well for them, she added.

"We're really happy and very thankful that New York City has an affordable housing lottery. It's definitely been life-changing," she said.

Is NYC Safe At Night?

Is it even a good idea to explore NYC at night? If you’re worried about safety, you’ll be happy to know that the latest crime statistics show crime has continuously decreased each month for at least a year.

However, it’s still a big city with over 8 million people, so you should stay alert and make wise choices. I don’t recommend walking around with headphones on, your nose in your phone, or your cash in your back pocket.

Stay in well-lit areas and near crowds, and you’ll be fine. Also, don’t go in an empty subway car if no one else is. And while it seems cliche to say, avoid poorly lit alleys and stairwells.

Keep a level head and follow these safety tips , and you can enjoy all the best night attractions in NYC!

Best Things To Do In New York City At Night

On that note, let’s go over some of the top New York evening activities, including:

1. Visit Times Square

Hands down, one of the best things to do in NYC at night is visit Times Square .

It’s fun to just take in the whole scene after dark. There are iconic neon billboards, street vendors selling hot dogs and roasted nuts, and street performers giving their best.

Or hit up some stores and restaurants before heading to a show. Pro tip: for more local eateries and bars, walk over to 9th Avenue, aka the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood.

If you decide to stay out late, you can check out the Midnight Moment , which transforms over 92 digital billboards into works of art from 11:57pm to midnight.

Times Square in Manhattan at night, showcasing vibrant billboards and advertisements, including images of emojis and fashion models, with crowds of people below.

2. See a Broadway show

New York City ’s Theater District , which includes Times Square, is home to some of the best productions and performers in the world. And while most tourists book matinee showings, I highly recommend going to an evening show.

Not only does this allow you to feel the energy of the Theater District and really make a night of it, but if you want to meet the performers you can wait by the stage door to ask them to sign an autograph on their way out. They don’t always come out after matinees.

If you can swing it, go on a Tuesday night after the performers have had a few days to rest. I always feel like the energy of the performers and audience is electric and everyone is in a great mood.

No matter when you choose to go, seeing a Broadway show is a uniquely New York experience you’ll definitely want to add to your NYC itinerary !

3. Walk the Brooklyn Bridge at night

For some of the best views in NYC at night , head to the Brooklyn Bridge . It’s breathtaking to see Lower Manhattan and the East River lit up at night!

If you walk across and back, it’ll take you about 45 minutes without stopping. But of course, there are a few places you’ll want to stop along the way to take Brooklyn Bridge photos .

"A woman walking on the Brooklyn Bridge from DUMBO, Brooklyn to Lower Manhattan at sunset, with the city skyline and the bridge's structure visible in the background.

4. Explore High Line Park

One of NYC’s most unique parks is the High Line , which runs along a historic elevated railway that once served the factories of the Meatpacking District.

Today, the elevated park extends from the Meatpacking District to Hudson Yards along Manhattan’s west side and offers amazing views of the city.

Open till 10 PM, a stroll along the 1.5-mile park is the perfect way to end an evening in New York City. There is a lot to enjoy along the way—like native flower gardens, street performers, food vendors, art installations, and more.

You can also check out their events calendar for evening stargazing and seasonal dance parties!

5. Enjoy the Manhattan skyline from a rooftop bar

Come summer, one of the top things to do at night in NYC is find the perfect rooftop bar. And there are plenty of options, from exclusive penthouse bars to more casual settings with fun themes.

Looking for twinkling Midtown views? Consider the elegant Castell Rooftop Lounge . Additionally, Magic Hour is always a fun time, and Bookmarks Rooftop Lounge at the Library Hotel is the perfect setting for deep conversations.

If you don’t mind heading into Brooklyn , Westlight offers sweeping skyline views across the East River, while the Ravel Hotel’s Penthouse features some of the best views of the Manhattan skyline from Queens .

6. Relax at a night spa

Unwind in New York at nighttime by visiting a luxurious night spa where you can indulge in saunas, massages, and rejuvenating therapies.

BATHHOUSE in the Flatiron District offers a chic and serene escape, perfect for relaxing after a busy day.

On the other hand, Juvinex Spa in Koreatown provides unique treatments and late hours, making it ideal for night owls.

7. Go on a night cruise around Manhattan

A twilight cruise is an unforgettable way to see the lights of Manhattan and some of the most famous landmarks in NYC.

One recommendation is a 2-hour New York City Harbor Lights Cruise , which offers a peaceful float from the Hudson River through the New York Harbor and the East River .

Order a drink from the ship’s bar and enjoy views of the Statue of Liberty and One World Trade Center lit up after dark!

The Manhattan skyline at night viewed from across the New York Harbor, with illuminated skyscrapers and the moon shining through a partially cloudy sky.

8. Catch a live jazz performance

Seeing live jazz is one of the most fun things to do in NYC at night. Head to iconic spots like Blue Note , Birdland , Dizzy’s Club , and the Village Vanguard for unforgettable performances.

You can also try the infamous Café Wha , where artists like Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix got their start, or the Carnegie Club for a cozy vibe.

These venues feature some of the best jazz in the world, creating the perfect soundtrack for your night out in NYC.

9. Visit an observation deck

The city’s many observation decks are a no-brainer for things to see at night in NYC. And most of them are open until midnight.

Go to the Empire State Building or One World Observatory for the best nighttime views and some of the best places to take pictures in NYC .

There’s also Top of the Rock , Edge , and SUMMIT One Vanderbilt , which all boast breathtaking sights of the city lights from above.

10. Go to a comedy club

While you’re enjoying NYC’s magnetic nightlife, don’t forget that the city is also famous for its comedy clubs. Not only are you in for a night of laughs, but don’t be surprised if a celebrity guest makes a surprise appearance.

Of course, there’s the famous Comedy Cellar in the West Village , renowned for hosting famous comedians. Just make sure you book tickets in advance.

Or if you’re enjoying the bar scene in Chelsea, consider checking out Gotham Comedy Club . And The Stand in Union Square has great food and an intimate stage.

On the Upper East Side, Comic Strip Live hosts hysterical shows and is also where famous comics like Jerry Seinfeld, Eddie Murphy, and Adam Sandler got started.

11. Take in the view of Manhattan from an East River park

Visiting a riverfront park can be one of the best things to do in NYC at night. And if you’re visiting New York on a budget , you can enjoy some of the best views of Manhattan across the East River for free.

Why not take a relaxing evening stroll or enjoy a nighttime picnic? In Queens , Gantry Plaza State Park and Hunter’s Point South Park offer some of the best views of NYC at night .

And in Brooklyn, Bushwick Inlet Park , Domino Park , and Brooklyn Bridge Park each offer their own unique experience for those seeking stunning and free NYC views .

The Manhattan skyline viewed from Gantry Plaza State Park in Queens, NYC at night, with city lights reflecting on the East River under a partly cloudy sky.

12. Go to a rooftop cinema

Seeing a movie at a rooftop cinema is one of the best things to do in NYC at night, especially during the summer.

Rooftop Films shows fan favorites at venues across all five boroughs, from cult classics and indie productions to short films and documentaries.

For an upscale option, head to Rooftop Cinema Club in Midtown, which features a full bar and adult-only showings. Enjoy stunning city views while watching your favorite films under the stars.

During colder months or rainy days , opt for hip indoor theaters like Nitehawk Cinema and Alamo Drafthouse —both of which have multiple locations and serve food and cocktails to your seat.

Want beautiful photos taken of you in scenic New York spots? Book a Private Photo Journey , a walking tour that includes photos of your group to keep. Or get a styled, custom shoot that tells your unique story through an NYC Influencer Shoot or Professional New York City Shoot . Email [email protected] with inquiries.

13. See the Statue of Liberty from the Staten Island Ferry

No one should plan a visit to the Big Apple without including a trip on the free Staten Island Ferry .

The ferry runs 24/7 with service every 30 minutes between Manhattan and Staten Island . You can go anytime; but, I consider this one of the top things to do in NYC at night.

This is because of the spectacular sights of Lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty all lit up as you pass by on your way across New York Harbor.

The Statue of Liberty at night, illuminated against the dark sky, as seen from the Staten Island Ferry with a few city lights visible in the background.

14. Dine with a local New Yorker

Some of the most memorable NYC evening activities I’ve come across are the amazing experiences hosted by EatWith . They pair you with local foodies for an amazing time with delicious food and great company.

If you’re looking for unique and intimate NYC evening activities, consider a multi-course meal like this homemade seasonal ravioli dinner hosted by a Midtown resident. Or join a farm-to-table cooking class that starts with a visit to the Union Square Farmers Market.

These experiences are also a great way to have a more local and less touristy NYC experience .

15. Stroll through Central Park after dark

If you get the chance to visit Central Park in the early evening, the park has a completely different feel at night than it does in the daytime.

You can enjoy street performers, amazing views, and summer performances like Shakespeare in the Park and SummerStage . The park also has a full calendar of events , many of which take place at night, like summer movies.

And while a hike through the woods might not be the best idea, the park’s populated and well-lit areas are nice for a stroll. Personally, I love catching the sunset from the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir from the east side looking west.

Just note that Central Park closes at 1 PM, though between 9-10 PM is typically when events end. You’ll want to stick to areas that are populated after dark.

The Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir in Central Park at sunset, with the evening sky casting a warm glow over the water and the silhouette of the Manhattan skyline in the background.

16. Play pinball at a laundromat

If you’re looking for unusual and crazy things to do in NYC at night, head to Sunshine Laundromat in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

This intimate bar is a quirky late-night haunt with mosaics of dogs, a working laundromat, and a row of pinball machines at the back for your enjoyment.

The vibe is friendly and casual and there’s indoor and outdoor seating. It’s perfect for chilling with friends or making new ones if you’re traveling solo in NYC .

Prefer arcade games? Barcade serves craft beers in an arcade space with games that range from Street Fighter to PAC-MAN and beyond.

17. Sip cocktails at a speakeasy

Visiting a speakeasy-style bar is one of the coolest things to do in NYC at night! These hidden gems provide an unforgettable experience that transports you back to another time.

Trinity Place —set inside an actual bank vault—is a bar and restaurant offering incredible vibes in Manhattan’s Financial District.

Or for a touch of history, head to the Lower East Side to visit The Back Room , one of the few real speakeasies left that operated during Prohibition.

If you’re in the Upper East Side , you can do a speakeasy crawl by visiting UES (behind the counter of an ice cream shop), Keys & Heels (in a locksmith shop), and 2nd Floor Bar & Essen (above the local 2nd Ave Deli).

A spicy cocktail at Keys & Heels, a speakeasy in the Upper East Side of New York City, garnished with two red chili peppers and served over ice in a glass.

18. Attend a night market

You’ll never regret visiting a night market in NYC! There are a handful across the five boroughs that run from mid-April through October, like:

  • Queens Night Market – every Saturday
  • Bronx Night Market – first Saturday of each month
  • Brooklyn Night Market – last Monday of each month
  • Uptown Night Market – second Thursday of each month

These markets are free to attend. Just bring cash for vendors! You’ll enjoy the city’s diverse flavors, live music, and local artisans.

19. Have dinner at a waterfront restaurant

The best way to enjoy a sunset over the Manhattan skyline is to book a table with a view in DUMBO, Brooklyn.

You can’t go wrong with reservations at the romantic River Café , located practically under the Brooklyn Bridge! Nearby, Celestine is a bit more casual with panoramic views and Mediterranean food.

I also recommend Fornino Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park for amazing brick-oven pizza and cold beer.

While these are far from your only options, they’re some of my favorites as a local. Additionally, you might opt for one of these Manhattan skyline tours , some of which include food!

20. Take a night tour

You might prefer to sit back, relax, and let a tour guide show you the sights. In that case, consider one of the many amazing night tours in NYC !

You can go on a New York City at Night Bus Tour and take in iconic landmarks glowing with lamplight, or hone your skills as a photographer on an NYC After Dark Photograph y Tour .

One of the best NYC activities at night is a guided walking tour, like a New York City Ghost Tour of Greenwich Village with stops at historical sites and spooky stories.

Radio City Music Hall in NYC at night, brightly illuminated with neon lights and decorated for the holiday season, with people and a yellow taxi in the foreground.

21. Visit museums with late hours

Many NYC museums host extended hours at night, meaning you can see your favorite artworks and artifacts well into the night.

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) offers “Free Fridays” until 9 PM, while the Whitney Museum of American Art stays open until 10 PM. And the Metropolitan Museum of Art hosts concert series, cocktail hours, art classes, and more!

There’s also the Brooklyn Museum ’s First Saturday event which features a variety of attractions like artist talks and a vendor’s market.

22. Check out a live music venue

For live music, one of the best things to do in NYC at night is walk around music-rich neighborhoods like the Village and the Lower East Side and pop into any bar with a stage.

If you’re looking for a bigger space, The Village Underground and the Bowery Ballroom are excellent destinations in NYC after midnight .

Le Poisson Rouge is a must for eclectic sets as is Rockwood Music Hall —the latter of which is also near other great live music venues like Pianos and Arlene’s Grocery .

If you’d prefer to jam out outside, SummerStage is a seasonal event offering a wide range of live music on outdoor stages across the city, while The Rooftop at Pier 17 offers rooftop concerts on the East River.

23. Experience the nightlife of the Village

The independent spirit of the Village makes it the perfect destination if you want to experience the magic of NYC at nighttime.

The neighborhood boasts comedy clubs, bars, cafes, old theaters, and more offering endless entertainment options for late-night New York activities.

An unforgettable stop is the historic Marie’s Crisis Bar , featuring live piano and sing-alongs.

Two people clinking glasses at Marie's Crisis bar during a night out in New York City, with colorful string lights creating a festive atmosphere in the background.

24. Take a haunted tour of Green-Wood Cemetery

Visiting NYC in the fall , specifically in October? A spooky-season essential is a haunted tour of Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn!

There are several recurring tours to choose from—including Green-Wood Cemetery After Hours , where you tour the tombstones at twilight and learn about historical figures interred in the cemetery.

Or join a moody Moonlight Tour , complete with live accordion music and dramatic stories about the most impressive monuments and catacombs in Green-Wood.

25. Go to Coney Island’s Luna Park

Luna Park is a historic beachfront amusement park in Coney Island, Brooklyn and one of the most memorable things to do in New York at night.

You can ride the iconic wooden Cyclone coaster, enjoy old-school carnival games and rides, and more. Then, take a leisurely walk along the boardwalk, soaking in the ocean views under the moon.

A view of the Manhattan skyline at sunset from the Westlight rooftop bar in Brooklyn, overlooking the East River and various buildings, with a soft orange and blue sky in the background.

New York City Travel Insurance

When visiting New York City — or anywhere else in the world — it’s wise to get travel insurance.

For this, I have two recommendations:

SafetyWing . If you’re looking for something straightforward and budget-friendly, you can’t beat SafetyWing. They offer one global policy that you can cancel at any time or continue paying for long-term coverage (making it the perfect option for digital nomads!).

Their plan includes medical coverage, trip interruptions, personal liability, unplanned overnight stays, lost luggage, and more.

World Nomads . For something more comprehensive, World Nomads is a great option. While you’ll pay a bit more, you’ll typically get higher coverage maximums as well as additional inclusions—like trip cancellation.

Taylor Swift Walking Tours Are Coming to NYC—And They're Hiring for Tour Guides

But the tours haven't been created yet—because GetYourGuide and On Location Tours are looking for the ultimate Swifties to help create and lead them. For the not-so-casual fan, this is a chance to create the ultimate Swiftie travel experience in New York City and London.

"Taylor Swift famously wrote a song called 'Welcome to New York,' along with dozens of other songs that mention New York and London by name; her love for both cities has really whet tourists’ appetites for Taylor Swift-inspired tours of both," said Madison Pietrowski, head of brand US at GetYourGuide. "They want to see these places through Taylor’s very romantic eyes. Who better to deliver the ultimate Taylor tour to her fans than an ultimate Swiftie, someone who can ensure that fans feel welcomed to New York—and London—as if Taylor herself has been waiting for them, to take them along on a highly personalized tour of her favorite spots."

This Ultimate Swiftie Tour Guide job will include compensation, training with professional tour guides in New York or London, and free tickets for friends and family for the tours you lead. In order to apply for the job, you’ve got to go through a couple rounds of interviews to prove your Swift knowledge. The first round requires you to post a video on Instagram or TikTok to show why you should be the Ultimate Swiftie Tour Guide and then tag @GetYourGuide and #UltimateSwiftieGuide.

For the rest of the Swifties more interested in taking the tour rather than leading it, keep your eye out for updates from GetYourGuide and On Locations Tour, so that you can book the experience of the city the next time you visit New York or London.

In the meantime, you can try to chase down Swift on her Eras tour throughout Europe. There are still some relatively cheap tour dates  you can fly to for her summer concerts.
