Zoe Sugg and Alfie Deyes have both amassed huge followings on social media, with the couple documenting their life on Youtube and Instagram over the years.

Zoe, 33, known as Zoella on social media, shot to fame in 2009 after her blog proved to be immensely popular, resulting in her launching a Youtube channel.

She and Alfie, who announced their engagement on 13 September , began dating in 2012 and have gone on to carve out careers in social media. The couple welcomed their first child, Ottilie, in 2021 and are expecting their second daughter in December 2023.

The soon-to-be family-of-four reside in Brighton in a sprawling £1.7 million home, which regularly features in their online content. Let's take a look inside...

Zoe and Alfie have been together since October 2012

The couple moved into the property back in 2017 and they’ve kitted it out ever so stylishly.

Seeing as the pair are consistently producing content for their iconic YouTube channels, it’s no surprise they’ve got a beautiful office in which to work.

Zoe spoke about her home office during lockdown, saying she loves the room and that it’s a space which makes her “feel creative and be productive.”

zoe sugg house tour

The sensational space boasts wooden floorboards and white panelling on the walls, and bringing the magic to the space Zoe has weaved fairy lights along the walls.

The clean white desk houses a laptop and desktop, as well as adorable potted plants, candles and pin boards.

However the eye-catching piece in the space simply has to be the vintage dresser which houses a vinyl player, prints and an old school phone.

zoe sugg house tour

From one cosy room to the next, Zoe has really captured comfort with her dreamy bathroom.

The elegant space has a sunken tub with brass detail which sits against a panelled green wall.

Plants and green tiles breathe life into the gorgeous space and it looks like a truly idyllic place to kick back and relax among the bubbles.

zoe sugg house tour

The house isn’t short of bright rooms, and the kitchen follows suit with huge windows and white brickwork.

Plants are scattered about the space, and it boasts low hanging lighting, and a huge old-school clock sits on a shelf at the back of the room.

The couple have a fully stocked pantry in their wow-worthy kitchen, and it houses all sorts of goodies and state-of-the-art equipment.

zoe sugg house tour

In Zoella’s bedroom there’s a cosy bed with burnt orange cushions and pink linen, and a sweet vintage bedside table houses candles, hand cream and a diffuser.

Zoe shared a snap of herself with her adorable pug while watching a film, and we can get a peek of her makeup station with retro stool pushed underneath.

The Brighton-based couple also have a well-organised bar area inside their home, and lots of large neon writing spread throughout the home, as well as statement artwork.

zoe sugg house tour

Outside is just as impressive as in at Zoe and Alfie’s stunning home, with a large lawn and decking area.

Alfie and Zoe have been dating since 2012 after reportedly meeting at a meet and greet event, where Zoella queued up to meet Alfie.

Zoe previously opened up on her relationship with Alfie in 2018 and said, despite being in different industries, the pair aren’t competitive.

zoe sugg house tour

She told Glamour: “Our relationship is never competitive. I can talk to him about an issue and I don't have to explain it because he understands immediately. The downfall is we talk about work a lot and we both work from home so we're around each other a lot."

Zoe also got candid about the ups and downs of their romance as she said: “Alfie and I both have days when we feel the pressure on our relationship and want to punch each other in the head - who doesn't?!

“But we know when to talk, and when to give each other space. Alfie films every day which I took a bit of getting used to, but we have a routine where I might say, ‘I don't fancy being in your video today,’ and he'll just say ‘OK’. But really, we don't argue very much at all. We're kind of boring in that sense.”

Zalfie mansion: This is what Zoella and Alfie Deyes' brand new Brighton home looks like

Vloggers were harassed by fans at their previous b-town home..

Alicia Adejobi Senior Entertainment Reporter

YouTube power couple Zoella and Alfie are celebrating another milestone in their relationship, moving into a beautiful new home. The vloggers, affectionately dubbed Zalfie, kept the exciting news a secret from their millions of subscribers for four months before announcing they had moved into their new place.

Zoella, real name Zoe Sugg, revealed the move in a new vlog titled The Happiest Day, which has received 1.3 million views already. Boyfriend Alfie Deyes uploaded his own announcement named The Big Day on 11 June. The influencers said they purchased the sprawling Brighton property in February and have quietly moved their belongings themselves without the help of a removal company.

In her video, Zoella, 27, gushed: "I don't think I've ever been this happy in my entire life. I'm so happy and I just feel like I'm the luckiest person in the world. I'm really happy we're vlogging this as well because there was a part of us that thought 'how much do we really want to share?'

"I hope it doesn't come across like we're boasting. We're so aware that we're in the luckiest position that we're able to do this and we're so grateful. I'm happy that we're vlogging today as our first day in so we can look back at this. It's those big milestones that you question whether you should film or not but when you do, you're so happy."

In 2015 the couple bought their first home together, a five-bedroom detached house reportedly valued at £1m. However, their domestic bliss was interrupted after a website published their address, prompting many of their young fans to camp outside. In one previous video, Alfie, 23, complained of the intrusion of their privacy and revealed that mothers were even driving their daughters to their house and ringing the doorbell.

Their new home will no doubt afford better privacy, with the couple cautiously refusing to disclose the exact location. Although they are yet to post an official home tour, Zalfie did offer a glimpse of the huge property in the announcement vlogs. Their light and airy kitchen includes a modern conservatory, which boasts large sliding doors leading out onto a massive garden.

One of the most cosiest rooms shown so far is their living area featuring a neat fireplace. However, Alfie seemed particularly impressed with their new waterproof garden sofa, which he eagerly demonstrated with a bottle of water.

It is not known how much the new home set them back but Zalfie can certainly afford to treat themselves, with Zoella approaching 12 million subscribers, releasing two best-selling novels and launching a lifestyle range. Alfie is also a YouTube star in his own right and is preparing to release his third Pointless Book. In March 2016, it was reported that Zoella was earning at least £50,000 per month .

I thought she rented this place? Bet she had to move to get away from all the followers ringing her doorbell and hanging around outside! Must be weird having that happen; she seems such a great lass. I knew of her through her chummy, Louise, who lives in up here in Northampton. Totally amazing how their blog-o-sphere has taken off! Good on them. Don't think I could cope with it!! Hope you and the family are well? Zxx

Hi Sarah!!! I've always loved seeing what a property looks inside. My favorite has always been the UK!!! I guess having my family history from there could account for why!!! What a beautiful Penthouse!!! Now I'll be cheeky as my mother would put it, and ask if you knew the price to purchase. I compare prices to what or what you couldn't buy in a similar area in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Have a great week!!! Pam

Where does YouTube Zoella live? Brighton vlogger now owns a mansion in West Sussex

The YouTube star bought a £1.7m home in West Sussex a few years ago

  • 18:24, 26 NOV 2020
  • Updated 12:28, 1 DEC 2020

zoe sugg house tour

Brighton and its surrounding Sussex towns are a favourite for YouTube stars, with many living around the city.

It's no different for YouTuber Zoella, real name Zoe Sugg, and her fellow vlogger boyfriend Alfie Deyes.

The pair have been living together in and around Brighton and Hove for over five years.

Zoella now lives in a £1.7m mansion reportedly in an 'affluent West Sussex village', which appears to be in Hassocks.

What do you think of the new Tier restrictions? Take part in our survey below

The vlogger's main YouTube channel boasts over 11 million subscribers, while her secondary channel has over four million, and she has a lifestyle and beauty brand as well as a book deal.

Her multimedia empire, created off the back of her original Zoella YouTube channel and blog, has allowed the 30-year-old to become a multi-millionaire, affording the Hassocks mansion.

When she first moved to Brighton around the beginning of 2014, Zoe lived in an apartment on Hove sea front.

A year later, the Brighton-based YouTuber moved to a five bedroom, five bathroom house also in Hove.

Zoe and her boyfriend Alfie voiced their frustrations after the location of the home was revealed and fans showed up outside their house to catch a glimpse of them living in the five bedroom Hove house.

They moved out of the house, which was revealed to be located on Dyke Road, in 2017 and headed to the West Sussex village of Hassocks.

zoe sugg house tour

After buying the property in February 2017 they moved in that summer, revealing in their vlogs they took on most of the moving process on themselves and had the house decorated before moving in.

Zoe reportedly bought the seven bedroom mansion for £1,749,000.

According to property website Zoopla , the house also boasts four bathrooms and five reception rooms.

Time is running out to save up to £12k with high-spec East Grinstead apartments

There are many reasons to think about moving or buying your own home but how about the idea of cash incentives worth up to £12,000?

A change of scenery may be just what you are looking for after 2020 and with offers like no stamp duty, cashback towards your mortgage and the Government's Help to Buy scheme, there is surely no better time.

If you are thinking of moving home or buying your first property then Weston Homes’ Queen’s Walk development in East Grinstead may be just the place, offering all you could want or need.

The 129 high-specification one and two-bedroom apartments are just a stone’s throw from the town itself and less than an hour from London.

Time is of the essence though, as if you want to apply for the current Help to Buy scheme* you must reserve by December 15 and there is a time limit for other incentives.

There are lots of reasons to choose the apartments in East Grinstead, which offer peace and tranquillity in a property hot spot.

To find out more about these delightful apartments then click here.

Although the online star is known for living in Brighton, she has been living in Hassocks for over three years, showing off her Instagram-worthy house with snaps and vlogs.

The house is full of colour and texture with interesting design details including a neon sign and illusion patterns in some of the tiling.

The dining room includes a massive mirror perfect for outfit photos, pink velvet chairs, and a rose gold cabinet topped with alcohol bottles.

There's a huge garden and lots of light from the French sliding doors leading out to it, and a picnic bench and large corner sofa makes it the place to be when the weather is nice.

Fans invading her privacy is no longer an issue at the Hassocks mansion either, with the couple stepping up their security.

In a vlog not long after moving into the lavish property, her boyfriend Alfie revealed the extent of security in their home.

zoe sugg house tour

He said: "We've got things in the corner of every room that as soon as we go to bed, or if we go to sleep or into particular rooms, the security kicks in.

"We have panic buttons hidden all over the house, if you press it at any time, 24/7 365 days a year, every single police car in the area that's available will come to the house.

"When people ring on the door bell or come up to the gates, it's all recorded and tracked, and their faces are detected."

YouTube power couple Zoella and Alfie Deyes move house – and post a vlog all about it

zoe sugg house tour

Fans of YouTube couple Alfie Deyes and Zoe Sugg, better known as PointlessBlog and Zoella, have been worried that the pair had broken up after a recent lack of joint vlogs.

However, all of those fears have been put to bed now that they have uploaded videos revealing a secret they’ve been keeping since February – they’ve moved house.

The massive house in Brighton boasts a sprawling garden and shelves so high that Zoe has to use a stepladder to reach them.

Zoe said in her video ‘We’ve been packing since February. We decided to do it ourselves – don’t do that. It takes so long it consumes your life.

‘We’ve still being trying to do other things and pack but it’s been very difficult – that is why there’s been a lull in the old vlogs.’

zoe sugg house tour

She also explained that she’d been feeling unwell for the last few weeks, so hadn’t wanted to upload content for her dedicated fan base, made up of mainly 13-24 year old females, while she wasn’t feeling 100%.

The pair will most likely be keeping their new address more private, as they had trouble in their last home with fans turning up unexpectedly.

zoe sugg house tour

Zoe took to Twitter in 2015 to ask her fans to stop camping outside her home and ringing the doorbell, and Alfie also repeatedly pointed out that it wasn’t right for parents to drive their children to spy over fences at the stars trying to relax in the garden.

zoe sugg house tour

The vlog showed Zoe and Alfie being helped with their move by Alfie’s sister, Poppy, and her boyfriend, Sean.

As the footage progressed, Poppy was filmed in the garden spying for rabbits, and Alfie commented on the amount of boxes Zoe has just for her clothes.

Those who can’t get enough of the power couple can look forward to watching the pair explore their luxurious new home – which they were careful to say they didn’t want to seem like they were showing off about.

Zoe said in the vlog that they knew they were very lucky to be in such a position, and simply wanted to share her happiness with her fanbase, which is over 15 million strong across her two channels, Zoella and MoreZoella.

Zoella explains why you'll never see this popular paint colour decorating her home

We speak to the YouTube sensation to quiz her on decorating choices

Ideal Home spoke exclusively with Zoe Sugg, better known as her online alter ego Zoella. You can see from Zoe's Instagram feed that her Brighton home, is stunning , boasting serious style credentials with brooding dark paint colours and bold tiles.

‘The one thing I often tell people when they’re doing up their house is to be a bit more brave with colour and tile choices. Because that’s one thing that I was pushed out of my comfort zone with a little bit,' Zoe exclusively tells us, as she talks about when she moved into her new home with partner Alfie Deyes.

As we chat to Zoe about her exciting new collaboration with Etsy , the conversation turns to home trends. When asked what she's not a fan of Zoe replies, 'I’m not a fan of a house full of white walls'

What is it that you don’t like about white walls?

‘I feel like sometimes, unless you have a lot of colour in the room through other elements like cushions, plants and things like that, white can seem quite stark and cold. I’m definitely the sort of person – and doing this house made me realise – whose mood is really affected by the warmth and colour of things.’

So much so that lighting was a key thing. ’When we were choosing our lightbulbs, I wanted to make sure they were all very warm – as opposed to the bulbs you can get that are more blue or bright white.'

Speaking of the colour palette throughout her and Alfie's home (which doesn't include white) Zoe explains, 'We've got light grey, dark grey, medium grey and we've got dark turquoise in the bathroom, and one of the guest rooms as well.'

Style tips from Zoe Sugg's house decor

Dining room.

A post shared by Zoë Sugg (@zoesugg) A photo posted by on

'I thought I could keep it quite safe and go light or white all over but there were certain rooms where I was just like ‘no, I’m just going to do it’. So we do have a really dark colour in the dining room,' she says.

Speaking about the dramatic makeover in this room Zoe recalls, 'We also painted the ceiling dark as well which you don’t often see that much but I actually really like it and it makes it quite cosy as well'.

‘For the bathroom we went for 3D-effect tiles. Which I have put up on my Instagram a few times and everyone asks "how do you not feel drunk when you’re showering in that bathroom?",' she jokingly tells us. ‘But I really like that we took the risk with that. So that is one thing I do always say to people, don’t always play it safe’.

The two rooms where Zoe took the biggest risks with design turned out to be her favourite in the whole house – the dining room and this dreamy turquoise bathroom.

Even in rooms where the colour palette is neutral, such as the master bedroom, the tones are those of grey rather than white. And as Zoe has suggested the addition of colourful accessories helps to add an element of warmth.

'My house has a lot of grey tones with bright pops of colour throughout, in things like art, cushions, bedding! I’ve always loved interior design and home styling and believe that with these things you can really customise a space in your home,' Zoe explains.

Speaking of her braveness with colour Zoe remarks, ‘It’s paint at the end of the day. If you really hate it you can just go back over it’. Wise words by Zoe there. Just don’t say it so casually to a painter and decorator if you’ve chosen a really dark colour… five coats of white later and all that!

Living room

Again where the walls are not dark, the rooms are still highly intriguing thanks to painted accents and bold coloured furniture choices.

'Positive Vibes Only' is the mantra in Zoe's happy house.

Girl Online: On Tour by Zoe Sugg

Tour with Penny and your favourite band across the countries of Europe

                                                                               Chapter One

                                                                            Five days later

It should officially be illegal for exam rooms to have a view of the sea. How is it fair that we’re stuck inside, fingers cramping from gripping a pen for two hours straight, while outside the light is dancing on the waves and it looks so bright and comforting? How am I supposed to remember who King Henry VIII’s fourth wife was when the birds are singing and I swear I can hear the happy, jaunty tune of an ice-cream van nearby?

I shake my head, dispelling the vision of a deliciously soft ice-cream cone with a cheeky Flake sticking out of it, and instead try to summon up a direct link into my best friend Elliot’s brain. He won’t be having much trouble remembering any of these facts and figures in his history exam. I gave him the nickname Wiki, because his brain seems to contain as much knowledge as Wikipedia, whereas my revision notes disappear from my memory as fast as a Snapchat.

I sigh and try to concentrate on the exam question, but the words swim in front of my eyes and I can’t make sense of my own messy scrawl. I hope whoever has to mark it has better luck.

Choosing to take history for GCSE was never a good idea. At the time, I just picked based on what everyone else seemed to be doing. The only subject I knew I definitely had to take was photography. The truth is I have no idea what I want to be when I leave school.

‘OK, everyone, pens down,’ says the examiner at the front of the room.

My mouth instantly goes dry. I don’t know how long I’ve been daydreaming for, but I know that I haven’t finished answering all the questions. These exams determine what subjects I’ll take next year and I’ve already mucked it up. My palms feel slick with sweat, and I can’t hear the birds outside singing any more. All I can hear is the squawk of seagulls. It sounds like they’re chanting ‘Fail, fail, fail’ in my ear. My stomach turns, and I feel like I might be a bit sick.

‘Penny, are you coming?’ I look up, and my friend and classmate Kira is waiting by my desk. The examiner has already snatched my paper and I’ve barely noticed.

‘Yeah, just a second.’ I grab my bag and slide out of my chair.

And then, as I stand up, a wave of relief takes over the nausea. No matter what the result, that’s it: my final exam. I’m finished school for the year!

I have a stupid grin on my face as I high-five Kira. I feel closer to my classmates – and especially the twins, Kira and Amara – than I have in my entire time at this school. They gathered round me in the aftermath of the drama at the beginning of the year – a solid wall of friendship against the breaking tidal wave of news. The media went into a frenzy when they found out I was dating rock star Noah Flynn, and then they discovered my blog; they unearthed private details of my life and labelled me a homewrecker, since Noah was supposedly in a relationship with mega pop star Leah Brown. It was the worst few days of my life, but my friends helped me to weather the storm. And, when it was all over, the drama had brought us together.

As we spill out into the hallway, Kira says, ‘Celebratory burgers at GBK? We’re all going there before we head to the concert. You must be so excited to see Noah again.’

A familiar flutter rises in my stomach. I’m excited  –  of course I am – but I’m nervous too. I haven’t seen Noah since the Easter holidays, when he spent my sixteenth birthday with me. Now we’re about to spend two weeks in each other’s company. And even though that’s the only thing I want – and the only thing I can think about  –  I can’t help wondering whether it will be the same.

‘I’ll catch you at the restaurant,’ I say. ‘I just have to pick a few things up from Miss Mills’s office and then head home to change.’

Kira squeezes my arm. ‘Oh god, I have to figure out what to wear too!’

Girl Online On Tour

The hallways are almost deserted and the only sound is the squeak of my Converse trainers on the linoleum floor.

I smile weakly as she rushes off, but the elation of finishing my exams has given way to a new set of nerves. The will‑my-boyfriend-still-like-me kind. I know I should feel more confident that Noah likes me just the way I am, but when your first boyfriend is currently one of the most famous new musicians on the planet that’s easier said than done.

The hallways are almost deserted and the only sound is the squeak of my Converse trainers on the linoleum floor. I can’t believe this is my last catch‑up with my photography teacher, Miss Mills. It feels like she’s been there for me a lot this year – she’s probably the only person I’ve really opened up to about what went on last Christmas and New Year, other than my parents. Even with Elliot I sometimes hold things back. Having a set of impartial ears was something I never wanted – but also never knew I needed.

It didn’t help that I had a panic attack in the small cupboard Miss Mills converted into a makeshift darkroom. It was only a couple of weeks after the news ‘broke’ online about Noah and me. Normally I find the darkroom soothing, but whether it was the fumes or the enclosed space –  or the fact that the picture I was developing was of Noah’s handsome face, a face that I wouldn’t be seeing for ages – I almost passed out into the chemicals. Luckily it was after school, so no one had to see ‘Panicky Penny’ in action all over again, and Miss Mills made me a cup of tea and fed me biscuits until I started talking and just couldn’t stop.

She’s helped me ever since, but I knew what would’ve helped the most: my blog. Blogging had always been so liberating. Even though I had set all future posts on Girl Online to private after posting my final blog ‘From Fairy Tale to Horror Story’, I couldn’t ignore the familiar itch that I wanted to scratch – that urge to share my thoughts with the world. Girl Online had been my creative and emotional outlet for over a year, and I missed it – and the community of online readers I had come to call friends. I knew, if I had just reached out to them, my blog readers would have supported me through this, just as they supported me through the early stages of my anxiety.

But the only thing I could picture whenever I closed my eyes and dreamt of updating my blog was all the hateful people online, poised over their keyboards, waiting to tear me apart. Even though so many people were supportive and lovely to me, it only took one nasty comment to send me back into a dark spiral. I’d never felt so paralysed before, so unable to write. Normally words flowed out of my fingers like water, but everything I wrote seemed stilted and wrong. I put it all down in a journal instead, but it just didn’t feel the same.

I’d tried to describe these feelings to Miss Mills. In that spiral, the people online become clowns in thick makeup – and when they smile their teeth are razor-sharp. They’re like monsters, but instead of lurking in the dark they’re right there for everyone to see. They’re all my worst fears rolled into one. They’re a million nightmares. They make me want to pack up all my things and move in with a remote tribe in the Amazon rainforest who think aeroplanes are evil spirits sent from the gods. Elliot told me about them. I bet they’ve never heard of Girl Online or Noah Flynn. I bet they don’t know about Facebook. Or Twitter. Or viral videos that just don’t ever seem to disappear.

Even if I lived only in Brighton, England, it would be OK. Most of my school has forgotten about my ‘scandal’, the same way they’ve forgotten the name of last year’s X Factor winner. My dad says that today’s news is tomorrow’s fish and-chip paper. And he’s right – the novelty of finding out about my blog, and even about Noah and me, has now worn thinner than the knees of my favourite jeans. But I don’t live in a remote jungle or really even in Brighton, England. Instead, I am a citizen of Planet Internet, and right now it’s the worst place in the entire world to be me – because, on the Internet, I worry that no one will ever forget.

At least one good thing has come from the Internet, though. Pegasus Girl and I swapped email addresses after she supported me, and she’s gone from being Girl Online’s most faithful reader to one of my best friends – even though we haven’t met in real life yet. After listening to me moan for the millionth time about wishing Girl Online still existed, she told me that I could change my blog settings so that only people I gave a password to could read what I wrote. Now she, Elliot and Miss Mills are the only people who read my ramblings, but it’s much better than nothing.

I can see Miss Mills through the warped glass in her classroom door, her light brown hair tumbling forward as she leans over her marking. I knock on the door frame and she looks up at me, smiling.

‘Afternoon, Penny. Are you all done for the year, then?’

I nod. ‘Just finished my history exam.’

‘That’s great! Come on in.’

She waits until I’ve sat down in one of the hard plastic chairs. All around the room are my fellow students’ photography projects, mounted on black foam board ready for the summer exhibition. Against Miss Mills’s wishes, I specifically asked not to put my work on display. I completed all the assignments but couldn’t face showing my photographs to anyone else. Most of my class also put their portfolios online, but I stopped uploading mine after Christmas. I’m terrified someone will find it and use it to make fun of me. Instead, I’ve been compiling a paper portfolio and handing it in to Miss Mills each week. The physical act of creativity has been very therapeutic.

She pulls out my portfolio and hands it back to me. ‘Great job, as always, Penny,’ she says with a smile. ‘This is our last meeting for a while, isn’t it? I wanted to talk to you about your last blog. You know, it does get better.’

I shrug. Getting through each day seems to be just about all I can handle.

As if she’s reading my thoughts, Miss Mills continues. ‘I think you can do far more than simply survive each day. You can thrive, Penny. You’ve been through a lot this past school year. I’m glad you’ve decided to continue with your A levels – especially in photography – but I don’t think you should let your choices worry you too much. You’re allowed to not know what you want to do yet.’

I want to believe her, but it’s hard. It feels like everyone has their lives all figured out, except me. It’s not something Elliot can relate to. He knows he wants to study fashion design and he dreams of one day having his own label. I just found out that Kira wants to be a vet so she’s taking biology and maths to make sure she can get into a good university. Amara is some kind of physics genius and has always wanted to be a scientist, so she is set. All I like to do is take pictures and write blog posts that I can only publish in secret to a select group of my closest friends. I don’t think there’s a career in that.

I know there’s an ocean of possibility out there, but I’m stuck on the shore, not prepared to dive in. ‘Didn’t you always want to be a teacher?’ I ask.  She laughs. ‘Not really. I kind of . . . fell into it. I wanted to be an archaeologist! Until I realized that archaeology isn’t about Indiana Jones-style adventuring and too often involves categorizing tiny fragments of bone for hours on end. I spent a lot of time feeling lost.’

‘That’s how I feel,’ I say. ‘Lost in my own life. And I don’t know how to use a compass. Is there GPS for your life?’

Miss Mills laughs. ‘No matter what those other adults might tell you, I’ll let you in on a little secret: you don’t have to know now. You’re only sixteen. Go ahead and enjoy yourself! Live your life. Turn that internal compass of yours upside down and backwards and in circles so it doesn’t know which way is up. Like I said, I fell into teaching completely by accident, but now I wouldn’t want to do any other job.’ She leans towards me and smiles. ‘So, are you looking forward to the concert tonight? It’s all anyone in my other classes could talk about. Isn’t Noah supporting The Sketch?’

On Tour pic

I grin, glad for the change of subject. My heart lifts as I think of seeing Noah again. There’s a point when Skype and texting just don’t cut it, and that point is now. It’s also going to be the first time I’ve ever seen him perform live on stage, in front of thousands of screaming girls. ‘Yes, he’s the opening act. It’s a huge deal for him.’

‘Sounds like it. Well, you take care of yourself over the summer. And don’t forget about your prep for A‑level photography.’ She gestures to my portfolio. ‘Are you sure you don’t want to exhibit? You’ve got some amazing work in here, and it deserves to be recognized.’ I shake my head. She sighs, but she knows it’s a losing battle. ‘Well, all I can say is keep on writing your blog, Penny. It’s your talent. You know how to connect with people, and I don’t want you to lose that. Make that your summer assignment from me this year, alongside your photographs. I want a full report of your travels when you get back.’

I smile, sliding the portfolio notebook into my bag. ‘Thanks for all your help this year, Miss Mills.’

I think about our photography assignment for the summer. Miss Mills has asked us to look at ‘alternative perspectives’; a challenge to see things from a different angle. I have no idea what I’m going to do, but I’m sure going on tour with Noah will offer up a million different opportunities.

‘You’re welcome, Penny.’

I leave the classroom, and am back in the deserted hallways. I feel my heart beating inside my chest as I pick my pace up to a jog, and then a run. I burst through the doors that lead outside, throw my arms wide and twirl on the front step of the school. I blush pink when I realize how cheesy that must look, but I have never been so ready for the school year to be over. Freedom has never felt so good.

The Brit Crew: What happened to Britain’s most recognisable YouTubers?

In the 2010s you couldn’t escape a certain friendship group of chirpy, cheeky british youtubers dubbed the “brit crew”. but when their star faded, members stopped uploading and their household names were forgotten. with the help of brit crew members jim chapman and marcus butler, rolling stone investigates their story.

By Amelia Tait

The Brit Crew stand atop a 'paused' icon

Whenever 33-year-old Jim Chapman walks past a group of teenage girls, his fiancée jokes that he turns into a meerkat. “I sort of go up a bit straighter and I look around, waiting for someone to charge me,” Chapman says over Zoom from his London home, wearing a taupe hoodie and an abundance of silver rings. For most of the past decade, Chapman couldn’t go out without teenagers rushing at him; once, he got on the Tube and a girl started crying her eyes out, baffling her dad. “It’s so ingrained in me that young teenage girls are the ones that will scream and cry and flock, I see them and think I’m gonna get stopped. And then I don’t, which is kind of embarrassing,” he laughs.

Jim Chapman is a model, writer and presenter, but most people know him best as a YouTuber. As a recent psychology grad, Chapman began uploading grooming videos in 2010, slowly building a following before it suddenly mushroomed. At its peak in 2017, Chapman’s channel boasted nearly 2.6 million subscribers; in 11 years, he has accumulated 144 million views. His most popular videos are pranks and challenges filmed with his friends, a group of nine unassuming British YouTubers who once dominated the platform.

Nicknamed the “Brit Crew” by fans, Jim Chapman and his contemporaries Marcus Butler, Alfie Deyes, Louise Pentland, Tanya Burr, Caspar Lee, Niomi Smart and siblings Zoe and Joe Sugg were once the internet’s most famous friends. When Zoe Sugg, better known as Zoella, released a book in 2014, it became the fastest-selling debut novel of all time. When Deyes signed copies of his own tome at a London Waterstones months earlier, the street outside was flooded with 8,000 screaming teens. For his part, Chapman once moved house after fans discovered his address and started knocking on his door.

Combined, the Brit Crew still have more than 42 million subscribers, but something happened at some point, and they no longer hold the same sway. Zoella topped news site Insider ’s list of, “The 16 YouTube channels that lost the most subscribers in 2019” after her following dropped by nearly half a million — she last posted to her main channel in June 2018. Of the rest of the Brit Crew, her brother Joe Sugg is still active, but Butler hasn’t posted for nearly four years; Burr and Lee haven’t posted for two. Chapman still uploads regularly, but his most recent three-week-old video has 26,000 views.

Over the past year, an entire YouTube cottage industry has sprung up of video after video asking, “What happened to the Brit crew?”. The most popular has 97,000 views and inspired comments ranging from, “watching these guys die out actually hurts my heart” to “thank goodness I grew out of that phase.” But no one really knows the inside story of how a bunch of British teenagers became international superstars before they seemingly fell out of favour.

Explaining how the Crew became friends, Chapman reveals that before influencing was a career, vlogging was “underground” — those who did it naturally bonded over the strange new world they inhabited. Once that friendship was cemented, the crew posted on a schedule and promoted each other in “collabs”.

To cash in on their popularity, in July 2015, magazine publisher Egmont released a special, one-off publication, Oh My Vlog! . Designed to appeal to girls aged 10-15, headlines included, “Marcus shocker! Bees terrify me.” Inside, readers found an A2 poster of the Brit Crew and a detachable Top Trumps-style game (Deyes scored 88 for “Phwoarsomeness”; Chapman only scored 73).

Former Oh My Vlog! editor Malcolm Mackenzie puts his finger on their appeal. “They created a wholesome, safe place where everything just seemed nice,” he says. He adds that kids loved them because they were normal — so normal that, much to his chagrin because he needed to fill pages, they never got papped.

“It was incredibly difficult to do what we did because there were no pictures of these people. Celebrities go out to red carpets, everyone’s interested… But these are YouTubers just sat at home.” Still, that was the point: “YouTubers did feel very relatable, they did feel like people you might just bump into. A lot of popstars feel unattainable.”

Sasha Buckwell-Bailey is a 20-year-old from Eastbourne who bumped into Zoe Sugg and Deyes — or “Zalfie” — in Brighton when she was 14. “I watched YouTube every day without fail. I’d come home from school and I’d watch for hours,” she says. “I’m an only child and grew up with a single mum so I think I found comfort in following such a large group of friends having fun. It’s kind of like I was living vicariously through them.”

Three things, then, made the Brit Crew famous: they were relatable, they were wholesome, and they were young. But with money, scandals, and the slow march of time, none of those things could last.

At their peak, the Brit Crew were all represented by talent agency Gleam Futures, and by 2016, rumours were swirling that Zoella earned £50,000 a month.

Malcolm Mackenzie with members of the Brit Crew.

“I remember the first brand deal, hearing the amount of money that someone wanted to offer you [to promote a product], and it was, like, ‘This is insane,’” says 29-year-old Marcus Butler via Zoom from his Berlin home, his rescue dog lounging beside him.

Butler initially found it hard to turn down opportunities. “You’re so young and so new to it, you feel so excited that you want to do it,” he admits. Although Chapman says he once refused a meat company’s invitation to dress up as a sausage …

Buckwell-Bailey — an avid fan from the age of 12 — says she “started watching less and less YouTube” as she went into Year 10. “The older you get, the more you come to understand money and the way the world works. You start to realise that for these people, it’s now just their job.”

“I think it started to get weird when we started to live our life a bit more — we weren’t all these young kids any more, travelling the world, always together all the time” Marcus Butler

Zoë Glatt, a digital anthropology researcher at the London School of Economics, notes: “The commodity being sold in their videos is the vlogger themself — their lifestyle, activities, tastes and relationships.”

Commodifying your friendships is difficult; Butler “felt weird” about placing Zoella in his thumbnails for clicks, even though the crew joked about it together. And while they once enjoyed meeting up to shove as many marshmallows in their mouth as possible, they soon matured.

“I think it started to get weird when we started to live our life a bit more — we weren’t all these young kids any more, travelling the world, always together all the time,” Butler says. Chapman, who was always older than the rest, quickly grew out of the content that made him famous.

Jim Chapman and Joe Sugg in a screengrab from the video 'JOE SUGG WAXED MY ARMPITS! #DAREJIM'

“I remember there was a video I did with Joe Sugg where he waxed my armpits and I got in a bath of ice and I covered myself in some condiment. I was 25, maybe, something like that. And I remember thinking, ‘This is the last time I’m doing this,’” he says. The video in question, ‘JOE SUGG WAXED MY ARMPITS! #DAREJIM’, is Chapman’s most popular, with 4.1 million views (the condiment in question was butter).

“I had to stop because I couldn’t keep doing that for my own sort of dignity and mental health, I suppose,” Chapman confides, explaining that he decided to transition into the calmer vlogs he films today. “I was really stressing, thinking about sacrificing all the traffic I was getting, but I knew there would be a point where young kids would be, like, ‘Dude, you’re too old. Why are you still waxing your armpits on the internet?’”

Butler began his YouTube career posting basketball compilations and reuploading Radio 1 Live Lounge clips. When viewers asked who he was, the sixth former started vlogging in 2010. Butler opted out of university — of the nine Brit Crew, three graduated before starting YouTube, while the rest didn’t pursue higher education. But the last video Butler shared with his 3.9 million subscribers was uploaded in March 2018; today, he calls himself a “retired YouTuber”.

“I had to stop because I couldn’t keep doing that for my own sort of dignity and mental health” Jim Chapman

“Thinking about how much I shared of my life online makes me feel very, very funny,” Butler says. At the height of his career, he would post 10-15 videos a week across his main, vlogging, and gaming channels. “The really dangerous thing with that is, you get to a point where you start living your life for the vlog.

“I remember waking up in the morning and being, like, ‘What am I going to do today for the video?’ My whole life became dedicated to trying to make something worth watching.” When Butler greets me on Zoom, I initially fear he’s annoyed — then I realise I’m contrasting the cheery way he started videos (“Hellllloooo!”) with his normal tone. He is more than happy to chat, saying he has been “waiting for a while” for someone to “pick up on” this story.

Butler says he made “an overnight decision” to stop vlogging daily. “I knew from a financial [viewpoint] it was probably a stupid decision, but I felt like I had completely fallen out of love… It had purely turned into: ‘This is earning money, I’m just going to forcefully carry on.’”

Although today there are entire BBC News reports about “YouTuber burnout”, back then, viewers were unsympathetic. In 2014, Zoella posted a video entitled “Sometimes It All Gets A Bit Too Much” and faced backlash despite her candid tears. “It’s very hard for people to look at someone who is successful and feel sorry for them,” Butler says.

Hate forums sprang up that scrutinised the Brit Crew, and Butler found it hard to resist reading. “It was the most toxic cycle ever, because you’re not reading it thinking it’s funny, you’re thinking, ‘Ah, that hurts.’”

Press shot of Marcus Butler

Chapman still deals with eye-watering hate: recently, someone DM’d him wishing his baby daughter would be thrown at a wall. Anti-fans also spread rumours about the crew’s relationships. Zoe and Alfie are still going strong and have just had a baby together. Chapman dated and married Burr, while Butler dated Smart — but both couples have since split.

“Going through a break-up is obviously shit anyway… And then if you’re sharing that with people, it’s just amplified multiple times,” Butler shares. Chapman says initially keeping his split secret led to false accusations about cheating. Yet while the haters were often unreasonable and extreme, sometimes complaints were justified.

By today’s standards, the Brit Crew scandals are tame. Butler remembers a mum once stopped him in the street to tell him off for swearing online — hardly on a par with corpse clips à la Logan Paul. Yet Zoella’s authenticity was eroded in 2014 when it emerged that her novel was ghost-written; in 2017, she was blasted for selling an overpriced tatty advent calendar. In 2018, Deyes clarified, “I am not a Tory” after he filmed a video about living on £1 for a day. But one scandal was more serious: The Fyre Festival of YouTube, HelloWorld.

HelloWorld was supposed to revolutionise meet-and-greets — kids were told they would film videos and play games with their favourite YouTubers instead of queuing for hours. But parents who paid a week’s wages for tickets were fuming when there was nothing to do inside the Birmingham Genting Arena, and mismanagement did indeed lead to long queues.

“There was a lot of shit that happened on that day that should never have happened,” Butler remembers. The Brit Crew formed a company — Crew Live Limited — to launch the event, but Butler says he didn’t make any money. Chapman argues that too many cooks spoiled the broth.

“We rushed it,” he admits. “I think we were all a bit, like, ‘We can do it better because we know what’s up.’ In actual fact, we might have bitten off more than we could chew.” Chapman adds that while he was “all in”, some of the others “were a bit like, ‘ Eh ?’” because they had other projects to fall back on.

Members of the Brit Crew on the red carpet in 2013

HelloWorld marked the beginning of the end for the Brit Crew, and by 2017, YouTube was fundamentally different; wholesomeness and One Direction-adjacent Anglophilia had been swapped for gamers shouting slurs. While the Brit Crew thrived as adults acting like kids, kids began to act like adults — nine-year-old Instagram rapper Lil Tay embodied a new influencer era that valued flex culture and “tea”. As a digital culture reporter, I began to notice a greater cynicism in the creator space, both from the audience and stars. Chapman and Butler both say they didn’t start their YouTube vlogs for money; they had no idea there was money to be made. Such a claim would be outlandish today.

Although Chapman and Butler are now zen about their decreased audience figures, both admit they spent a while chasing the dragon, creating content that no longer resonated. Then, both diversified their incomes by working in fashion. Today, Chapman is writing screenplays, while Butler has a passion for cryptocurrency. Many of the Brit Crew have founded companies, be they for student accommodation (Lee) or skincare (Smart).

And all of them can still be found on the less-invasive Instagram, while some have rebranded on YouTube for an adult audience. Joe Sugg has more than seven million subscribers, with another 5 million following his vlogs and gaming channel. But he recently reappeared on his channel ThatcherJoe after it being “in serious hibernation” for around a year to discuss his future plans for it. Zalfie post intermittently on their second, smaller channels (in March, Sugg broke the three-million-view mark for the first time in four years when she announced her pregnancy). But today it’s rare to see the whole group together. Chapman was recently reluctant to post a picture of him, Deyes, and their baby daughters because “you don’t want your mates to think that you’re just using them for traffic.”

Chapman continues to vlog simply because he enjoys it: “I’ve got an audience of people who seem to really care, but I don’t fool myself into thinking that they’d be devastated if I died tomorrow.” Butler expresses remorse for not making a final video for his viewers explaining why he left. “That’s probably something I messed up,” he says, “But I’m not even in a position where I feel comfortable making a YouTube video now.”

Tour Dianne Buswell and Joe Sugg's £3.5m home they 'fell in love' with

The strictly come dancing couple shared a peek inside the multi-million pound property.

Joe and Dianne posing for a selfie

Last week Dianne Buswell  sparked concern among fans when she made a teary confession after her dance with Bobby Braizer. When she's not engaged with her gruelling dance schedule with her dance partner in London, she has a beautiful Brighton home to retreat to with her boyfriend Joe Sugg .

The  Strictly Come Dancing couple swapped their former four-bedroom detached home – which they listed for £1.35 million earlier this year – for a sprawling Brighton property. They dropped a whopping £3.5 million on a five-bedroom property formerly owned by football player, Lewis Dunk, according to the Mail Online .

Here's everything you need to know...

Dianne and Joe's stunning abode comes with some jaw-dropping upgrades too, including a two-storey extension to the front and side of the home.

The first floor, ground, and lower ground floors also underwent a rear extension, and a detached front garage was also added after the Premier League player submitted plans to extend the property four months after moving in back in 2016.

Joe and Dianne have plenty of space as the home boasts 7,741 square feet and includes five bathrooms, six reception rooms, a double staircase, an open plan kitchen and lounge overlooking the huge garden, an indoor heated swimming pool and a gym.

Dianne has given her followers a peek inside their new home, sharing a view of their pristine kitchen and her spacious dressing room.

In her latest YouTube vlog , the professional dancer filmed herself assembling a new dressing table and revealed she has already moved most of her clothes into the built-in wardrobes.

The room has big windows that let in plenty of natural light, a large, free-standing mirror, multiple storage options, high ceilings, an en-suite bathroom, and so far, is decorated with potted plants and wooden furniture.

Speaking about the room, Dianne said: " This is a really great-sized room for my dressing room. I do absolutely love it, it's just very white at the moment so I need to inject a bit of colour into it. There's a few finishing things, well, I say a few there's a lot of things I still need to do but it's going to get there, and everything takes time"

Discussing the house move, she added: "I've only been in this house a few days because of being in Australia and having to go to work and all of that kind of stuff, so it hasn't actually been that long since we've been here. I'm slowly but surely getting things how I like it but there are still a lot of things around everywhere that I've not been able to do."

Joe first shared the news that the couple has relocated from their former country home earlier this month, telling his followers: "Hello! Little update for ya! If I'm ever away from social media for a while and I come back and I've got a moustache, you know I've been busy behind the scenes doing something!"

Dianne posing for a selfie with her wardrobe

He continued: "We're moving the last bits of our stuff because we have moved house. People are like, 'What? You've moved house? You were only in the last place for two-and-a-bit years!' Very true."

Speaking fondly of their former home, Joe added: "We loved the last place, but it was a project, it was a big project. We haven't got the time to take on such a big project, so we found this place, we absolutely fell in love with it and now we are here."

He concluded: "And that is why I've been gone for a bit, because I've been trying to sort all the stuff out when you move house – it's been stressful."
