Iconic Old Forge theme park bought by Florida company after 46 years of family ownership

After 46 years of ownership, the Noonan family in Old Forge has sold its Water Safari and related properties to Innovative Attraction Management of Windermere, Florida. The sale took place Friday, March 1, according to a news release sent by the new owners.

Originally opening in 1956 as the Enchanted Forest, Timothy Noonan purchased the theme park in 1977. He gradually expanded it into today’s Enchanted Forest Water Safari, New York state’s largest water theme park . In addition, the Noonans built the nearby Calypso’s Cove Family Fun Park featuring an arcade, mini-golf, and Go Karts. Also part of the sale: Old Forge Camping Resort, a year-round campground with cabins and cottages, RV and tent sites, and Water’s Edge Inn, a lakefront hotel with guest rooms and luxury suites.

“We are committed to preserving its great legacy developed over the last 4.5 decades by the Noonan Family, while enhancing the experience for guests of all ages,” said James Harhi, CEO for IAM a written statement. IAM specializes in theme parks, water parks, family entertainment centers, hotels and resorts, cruise ships, campgrounds, RV parks and similar assets.

Looking ahead

For Mike Farmer, head of tourism for Old Forge and town of Webb, the impacts of the sale remain to be seen.

“Water Safari is one of several key summer attractions our tourism department uses to market the town, along with McCauley Mountain , the Strand, VIEW, and others. The long-term impact will depend on IAM management continuing the high standards of customer service developed by the Noonan family. That’s what visitors take away and talk about, and that’s what brings them back year after year with new generations of their families,” he said.

When reached by phone on Tuesday, Katie Wojdyla of the Noonan family said she and her sister, Kelly Greene, will continue in their roles with the resort for the “foreseeable future.”

Greene, 55, who was the president of Enchanted Forest Water Safari, will serve as vice president. Wojdyla, 42, will continue to lead the marketing efforts. Wojdyla said her family felt that after 46 years, it was time to pass the torch.

Going forward, the name stays the same, and current staff retained at all the related businesses, said Wojdyla. 

“I’m sure there will be some change, but that has yet to be seen,” she said. “It’s the same safe, clean family fun everyone has grown to love over the years. We are all getting our bearings and we will start the real work.”

Enchanted Forest Water Safari sold to Florida based company

OLD FORGE, New York (WWNY) - A popular North Country water park is changing hands. Last Friday, a Florida company purchased the Water Safari Resort in Old Forge.

Innovative Attraction Management bought the resort, which includes the Enchanted Forest Water Safari water park, a campground, and Water’s Edge Inn from K&K of Old Forge Inc. and the Noonan family.

The announcement was made on Water Safari’s website Monday .

On its website, new owner IAM casts itself as a company in the business of turning around amusement parks that have been losing money.

The Noonan family owned Water Safari for 46 years.

A popular amusement park in Upstate New York is entering a new era.

Water Safari Resort announced Monday that it has been acquired by Innovative Attraction Management. IAM, a Florida-based company, officially took over Enchanted Forest Water Safari and its related properties from K&K of Old Forge, Inc., and the Noonan family on Friday, March 1.

“We are thrilled to welcome Water Safari Resort, including Enchanted Forest Water Safari, Calypso’s Cove, Old Forge Camping Resort, and Water’s Edge Inn to the IAM Family. This iconic destination in Central New York State holds a special place in the hearts of families and adventure-seekers alike,” said IAM President Mike Friscia.

Financial details of the deal were not immediately available.

Innovative Attraction Management (IAM) is a hospitality company based out of Windmere, Florida. The company says its focus is on family entertainment and experiences with theme parks, water parks, hotels, resorts, cruise ships, campgrounds, RVP parks and similar assets.

Enchanted Forest Water Safari, located in the Adirondacks hamlet of Old Forge, is New York’s largest water theme park. The longtime fun destination features water rides and slides, a wave pool, amusement rides, bumper cars, an arcade, mini-golf, go-karts, a lakefront hotel, and a year-round campground with heated cabins and cottages.

IAM CEO James Harhi said that the company is committed to preserving Water Safari’s “great legacy” and “we look forward to welcoming visitors to create magical memories for years to come.”

“We are thrilled to pass the torch on to IAM for the next chapter in Water Safari Resort’s future. Our family is so grateful to have served family fun to guests for the past 46 years. The great team and amazing guests are the backbone of this business and we look forward to what the future has in store for this iconic resort,” said Katie Wojdyla of the Noonan family.

Enchanted Forest Water Safari is scheduled to open for the 2024 season on June 12, according to its website .

All tickets and current hotel and campground reservations will be honored, IAM said.

Owner of Helberg Barbecue steps up to help DiCampli’s Italian Ristorante after power outage hurt business, ruined food

WACO, Texas ( KWTX ) - A Central Texas barbecue pitmaster who lost everything in a fire last year is reaching out to help another local restaurant owner who had to shut down his business for the weekend due to power outages in the wake of a powerful storm.

Overnight storms Thursday night knocked out power to Di Campli’s Italian Restaurant in Waco.   The power was not restored until Sunday, resulting in the popular eatery being closed Friday and Saturday. The restaurant suffered an estimated hit of $40,000 in sales.

More than $5,000 in food, including fresh produce and proteins, was also wasted with no way to keep the food refrigerated.

Phillip Helberg, owner of Helberg Barbeque in Waco, says he knows what it’s like to face challenges and need a helping hand after his restaurant was destroyed in a fire in late November 2023. Helberg put out a plea on social media offering to donate half of the revenue generated by its Italian sandwich on Saturday to Di Campli’s and then match the proceeds.

The day of sales resulted in a $1,000 gift.

“Spur of the moment. We prayed on it and saw a friend in need whose business had been out of power for a couple of days, our friends over at Di Campli’s,” Helberg said.  “We’ve been in that situation before.  We know what it’s like.  We know how devastating it can be for a small independent restaurant.”

DiCampli’s Owner Massimo Di Campli said losing power and closing even for two days took a big toll on his restaurant, so to have a fellow owner reach out to help, meant a lot.

“It means a lot to us.  I’m a big fan of the community helping each other,” Di Campli said.

Helberg Barbeque was hesitant to talk to KWTX about the gift as they never wanted publicity for the kind act.

They simply wanted to pass on the kindness they’d been shown after patrons and fellow restaurant owners supported the barbeque place which is still operating out of a temporary location while they rebuild.

A GoFundMe for Helberg Barbeque raised nearly $90,000.

“We’ve been given so much through the last six months recovering from the fire that we had after Thanksgiving,” Helberg said.  “The community really rallied around us and a lot of our friends in the industry rallied around us and lifted us up and we serve a good and gracious God. We’ve been given much more than we deserve and Luke 12:48 says from whom much is given, must is required.”

“It was a big blessing,” Massimo said.  “They are a really sweet family.  I was here in the restaurant when they called and asked me if it was okay to raise some funds which obviously made my heart melt.”

Di Campli’s reopened for business Monday. It is located at 6500 Woodway Drive Suite E.

Helberg Barbeque is open in its temporary space on Highway 6 in between Tucker Hall and The Bar None Country Store.

They’re hoping to be back in their original space with a  new building in six to eight months.

GALVESTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The iconic Battleship Texas has been undergoing multi-million-dollar renovations, and the big question now is which dock will become its forever home? However, some waterfront restaurants are fighting to keep the ship away.

Katie's Seafood House is located on the Wharf in Galveston and attracts customers for its front-seat water views.

According to Derrick Gutierrez, the restaurant's director of operations, the restaurant has won several awards for its waterfront views. He fears that if the massive ship moves to the shipping channel in front of his restaurant, it will take away business.

Gutierrez said he also has some serious safety concerns.

"When I started looking into it more, I thought, 'What do you guys have for an evacuation plan?'" Gutierrez asked. "'What are you going to do during a storm?' And there was nothing. Nothing there. It will go through any hurricane that Galveston goes through and battle corrosion and maintenance issues."

Before it moved to Galveston for the multi-million-dollar repairs, the massive ship was in the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site. The Battleship Texas Foundation has yet to officially announce its new home.

"It's inevitable it will corrode again, and the fact ticket sales are paying for its maintenance doesn't make me feel good because that's one bad year of ticket sales, and you can't afford maintenance on a ship that is in the channel," Gutierrez said.

Gutierrez, a former Marine, says he understands the ship's historical importance is one of the few remaining U.S. battleships to have served in both WWI and WWII. Still, he worries they don't have the funds to keep up with maintenance.

"If the ship were to sink in there, it would cost millions of taxpayer dollars to get it out. If it comes ashore during a storm, it will destroy whatever it touches - it's a battleship," Gutierrez said.

A spokesperson with Battleship Texas sent ABC13 the following statement:

"Our goal is to be an integrated partner with all parties involved and continue to elevate the island's historic tourism industry. The Battleship Texas has already received incredible interest from the state, region and throughout the country with broad support for our effort across the Island."

Dash Kohlhausen Landry's Deputy General Counsel also shared this statement:

"While the proposed location for the historic Battleship Texas may block some of the views of Landry's harbor front properties, Willie G's, Harbor House, etc., and a few others, it will also attract more than a million visitors a year to the area. This will be a boon for all of us and the island's entire tourism industry. The Battleship Texas is the last remaining United States battleship to serve in both World War I and World War II and for Galveston to be a part of this patriotism and serving as a tourist attraction at the same time is really special."
