Warped Tour 2003

After nine years of practice, one might think the organizers of the Vans Warped Tour would finally come close to getting it right. But this eight-hour punk and alternative rock festival is still in many ways the least fan-friendly of all the traveling daylong summer music fests.

The kids here were herded, barnyard style, into a large open athletic field — in this day’s case, behind the Pyramid at Cal State Long Beach — where unbearably long vendor lines, a dearth of edible food options and an utter lack of shade awaited. But this fest is all about being punk, and with so many bands representing so many different youthful styles, it was certainly possible to overlook the inconveniences and have a good time.

Veteran Cali groups Pennywise and Rancid were the standout performers of the long day, and each drew rowdy reaction from the throng. The angry politics of Pennywise, which hails from nearby Hermosa Beach, incited a crazy mosh pit, as well as the usual thrown bottles and shoes. The band ran through 30 minutes of the best of its large back catalog, ending with traditional closer “Bro Hymn,” a tribute to the band’s late former bassist Jason Thirsk.

Popular on Variety

Rancid, whose Epitaph-distributed Hellcat Records recently entered into a promotional venture with Warner Bros. for its upcoming “Indestructible” album, was impressive with its hardcore, Clash-inspired manner. The group’s two guitar/vocals front men played off each other and the rowdy crowd to impressive effect.

Irvine’s progressive punk quartet Thrice made possibly the strongest artistic impression of the day by going against form and opening its well-received turn with a short acoustic set of older songs, followed by hard-hitting tracks from the band’s excellent new album, “The Artist in the Ambulance” (Island).

Straight-ahead punks Face to Face gave a tight perf that showed off their well-rehearsed, speedy style; the aptly named French-Canadian newcomers Simple Plan offered a somewhat generic and melodic pop-punk approach; Dropkick Murphy delivered feisty ska-punk, while Vendetta Red — led by a Roger Daltrey lookalike — played rowdy anthems suitable for arenas.

The small side stages, which had to compete with the two side-by-side main stages, delivered some of the most interesting groups of the day, including a female-led thrash band from France. Its name did not appear on the day’s lineup, but the band’s manic style quickly drew a curious crowd. The hip-hop karaoke tent drew numerous Eminem-wannabes, while late in the day, an unknown hard-rock band saw its chance and took over the spot where the lone hamburger/hot dog vendor had been set up for an impromptu perf.

Unlike at OzzFest, where the performers are kept at arm’s length from the audience, band members here could often be seen milling about the athletic field, signing autographs, taking pictures and — in the case of Vendetta Red’s singer Zach Davidson — selling their own merchandise.

WARPED TOUR Piers 30 - 32; San Francisco, CA; 07/12/03

I had soooooooo much fun at the Van's Warped Tour. I'm a little bruised, sprained and sunburned, but it was all well worth it. I got into the show right as it opened, for once. The lineup sheets weren't ready yet, so I aimlessly wandered around for awhile, finally stopping in front of the Volcom stage, where Rufio ( www.rufiomusic.com ) was playing. They were decent and worth checking out. From there, it was band after band, almost non-stop for more than 6 hours: 1208 ( www.1208music.com ): They come from the same area that spawned Pennywise and the Deviates and Pennywise's Fletcher has had a hand in producing them. They are young but very good and they put on a good show, too. Tsunami Bomb ( www.tsunamibomb.com ): Punk rock chick lead singer. Their best songs are great, everything else is mediocre. Fortunately, they're getting better and better as they age. Again, a good show. NorCal punks do a great job of supporting their hometown bands. Dropkick Murphys ( www.dropkickmurphys.com ): Hands down, the most intense pit I've ever been in. Tons of crowd surfing (some by people who are really too big to be surfing). I lost my hat and sunglasses twice, but somehow managed to recover them both times. All the crowd surfing made it kind of hard to actually enjoy the band. I was too busy pushing backs, arms, legs and butts off my head. I really want to see DKM again, but where I can enjoy it more. After being mostly unable to breath for half an hour, I needed some place to just breathe and dry off a bit. The Mad Caddies provided the background music for this quest. Mad Caddies ( www.madcaddies.com ): It was very good, kind of mellow, kind of hard punk-ska with a great horn section. They have a new album that came out earlier in the year that I'll have to check out. Body Count ( www.bodycount.com ): Next was a previously unannounced special guest: Body Count with Ice mofo T. I don't know who introduced them, but it was a white guy (maybe, possibly Jello Biafra?) who got pelted by water bottles and a smoke bomb by a small number of audience members as he said, "No one has done more to piss on the graves of all those who died on Sept. 11 than George W. Bush ..." and then proceeded to provide commentary on the PATRIOT act and other things that have happened since the terrorist attack. Then Ice-T and Body Count came on and reinforced that message. I haven't listened to that CD in a long time, but was still able to sing along pretty well, as did most of the crowd. Ice-T did a great job of adding a political message to almost each song and getting the crowd riled up. Rancid ( www.rancidrancid.com ): Another intense pit. This was a little better than the DKM pit. Lots of crowd surfing, but I was still able to enjoy lots of the set. Lots of jumping up and down and shouting along. A new Rancid album comes out soon. Suicide Machines ( www.hollywoodrecords.go.com/suicidemachines ): One of my favorites to see live. I saw them a couple years ago and they were great again this time. A great pit and they worked the crowd real well: split the pit in two, then had us charge each other, "Braveheart" style. Later, they split the pit again, and had those of us in the center charge those who were "safely" off to the side. The music was great, too. Lots of singing along and jumping. After this, I spent about an hour wandering around, picking up merch and resting up for the end and highlight of the show. I saw bits and pieces of unknown bands from the Volcom stage. Bands really need to make sure they say who they are before they end their set. One of them was pretty good, but I don't know who they were. Pennywise ( www.pennywisdom.com ): There are lots of reasons why Pennywise is my favorite band and they were all reinforced in their 30 minute set. The pit was great. There was some crowd surfing, but mostly just singing along and jumping around. The music was great. They played a lot from "Land of the Free" which is holding up to be a great album. A few prime older cuts, too ("Perfect People," "Homesick," "Pennywise" and, of course, the closing "Bro Hymn" and a track called "God Bless the USA" from their upcoming album. Their new album comes out August 9. Guitarist Fletcher asked the crowd, "How many of you are going to buy it?" About 80% of the crowd raised their fists. Then he asked "How many of you are going to download it off the internet?" There were loud cheers and about the same number of raised arms. Then he asked, "How many of you are going to buy it, then beat the shit out of those whole stole it?" Which got cheers from about the half the crowd. Fletcher added, "We really don't care how you get it, just get it and enjoy it." There were a few bands I heard only in passing or from a distance: Sum41 (who played their cover of Metallica's "Master of Puppets"), The Ataris, The Used and Face to Face. As usual, it was a great show and well worth the few minor injuries.

This First Person column was written by Jonathan Lodge, a Canadian Armed Forces reservist and nurse in Calgary. For more information about CBC's First Person stories, please see the FAQ.

I'm an army reservist. That means I'm a part-time soldier for the Canadian Armed Forces, who train constantly and volunteer to serve when there is a need to fight wildfires or deploy to a war zone.

I'm proud to be in the army and believe it's a force for good. But I've learned to keep this aspect of my identity under wraps because some people grow distant or sometimes become antagonistic and even rudely suggest I must have a taste for violence — just because I'm a soldier.

But that's a myth. If only they knew, I've seen just as many good-hearted people and as much camaraderie in the military as I have while working my other job as a critical care nurse in a busy Calgary hospital.

To be fair, I used to have my own doubts. As a child, I wondered if soldiers were automatons like Charlie Chaplin's machine men . When I joined Canada's army reserve at 19 in the 1990s, I worried it might be full of jerks and bigots. But I wanted to try something different. I wanted to get through something tough that would benefit me. I wanted to serve Canada.

A group of men dressed in army fatigues stand around a camel.

Right from the start of basic training, the focus was on team-building and looking out for the buddy beside you.

My cohort was 40 men and five women, most in our early 20s, with a range of ethnicities, spoken languages and educational backgrounds. We became a tight group with friends who often felt more like brothers and sisters. In the junior ranks' mess, I hugged and was hugged by way more guys and gals than anywhere else — even when we weren't trying to "drink the fridge."

In 2003, I put my name forward for an overseas tour. My unit was deployed outside Dubai on a support base for the Canadian mission to Afghanistan. There were stressors and frictions but real bonds grew and sustained us through the boredom of security work, stupefying heat and occasional bad news from loved ones back home.

When the deployment was over, my friend Dave said that the sudden end felt like losing a job, a home and a relationship all at once, and I agreed.

Our detractors suggest we're hungry for violence. But I wasn't trained to be excited to kill and even during practice, no one demonized the potential enemy. The closest thing to that might be the nickname for the standard rifle target — an image of a charging, angry soldier we called "Herman the German." It felt like a relic from the Second World War, but didn't change after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, when the Canadian military was sent to Afghanistan.

A man wearing scrubs stands in a hospital hallway with a stethoscope hanging around his neck.

When I joined the military, I didn't expect to be thanked for my service. But I also didn't expect the random moments of hostility from Canadians.

I was in uniform when a smartly-dressed middle-aged woman stopped me on the street in Montreal, told me I was uneducated and doing nothing with my life. She also added, "Try not to kill anybody today."

Another stranger drove his car partway into our convoy in Vancouver and pretended to shoot me in the face. Another man in Montreal yelled at my regiment that we should shoot each other.

I shrugged it off and rationalized the vitriol as a political reaction from people who saw me as just a symbol of wars they didn't support.

Then in 2012, I went to nursing school. I learned to make a bed using hospital corners, just like in the army, and noticed other similarities, such as a commitment to serving others, working long hours while suppressing one's own needs and wants, being expected to run toward danger instead of away from it as well as trauma bonding and dark humour from shared rough experiences.

Canadian military relaxes entry requirements to boost recruitment

Both nurses and soldiers are highly trained workers who use their intellect and initiative constantly in daunting work. Even junior members are entrusted with great responsibility, including matters of life and death.

Despite that, I learned not to talk about the army side of me. I had too many friendly work relationships turn sour when they learned I was also a reservist. On one placement, even a supervisor, who smiled a lot and seemed to like my performance, turned cold and became critical after my manager mentioned that I was a soldier.

Unlike the strangers who came up to me on the street, slights at my work felt more personal and I learned life is easier if I hide that part of my identity. But I'm speaking out now because the military matters to me. I'm proud of the work we do to support stability on the world stage and to stand up for our allies.

A man in uniform stands among gravestones in a cemetery.

Plus, I've personally known, appreciated and cared about a much larger and more diverse swath of Canadians as a result of my joining up, and I've become a more humane, more social and more open-minded person.

I hope my fellow Canadians realize their reservist servicemembers are not so different from them. In my experience, we join because our fellow citizens and our country matter a great deal to us, and we stay because we care about our purpose and for the deep affection for the brothers and sisters we find on the inside.
