Free Orlando Walking Tours

Fun, Healthy Ways to See the Sites and Scenery

So many tours hustle you past the points of interest on a bus, forcing you to look quickly back and forth to your left and to your right, hoping you don't miss anything cool. Walking tours are a great alternative if you're not covering too much ground, allowing you to stroll casually from sight to sight, leisurely taking it all in and getting a closer look.

For both tourists and locals wanting to get a deeper understanding of their home, a number of walking tours in the Orlando area offer opportunities to visit key sites and get to know the locales. And as an added bonus, the ones included here are all free of charge.

The Downtown Historic Walking Tour

This free self-guided walking tour takes you past 28 buildings of historic importance throughout two adjacent downtown neighborhoods—the Central Business District and Parramore. The buildings were erected between the 1880s and 1940s. Conveniently, the tour also takes you around many of the most lively areas of the western side of downtown, so it's a good chance to also see the Orlando of today.

SEE ART Orlando Walking Tour

 TripSavvy / David Pavlina

The SEE ART Orlando program initially installed eight large-scale works of public art around the Central Business District and Lake Eola Park . The city provides a map for your self-guided free walking tour, a must-do for art lovers living in or visiting downtown Orlando. Additional sculptures are planned, and the tour will undoubtedly evolve to encompass them as well.

Two Additional Paid Walking Tours in Downtown Orlando

As a side note, there are two additional professionally guided walking tours in downtown Orlando, though neither are free. The Gallery Tour takes you through some of the leading art galleries in the Central Business District for $20 per person every Saturday from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm; The Downtown Orlando Food Tour costs $35 per person, runs every Saturday from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, and takes you to five or six popular eateries in the area, where you sample some of their offerings.

Winter Park Walking Tour of Historic Sites

Take a free self-guided walking tour past 20 sites of interest in the commercial district of Winter Park (or, if you're feeling extra motivated, see four additional sites at the north end of Park Avenue). It begins at the Winter Park Historical Museum and site of the Winter Park Farmer's Market, continuing around the upscale downtown central business district. If you still have energy to burn, stroll around the nearby Rollins College campus afterwards; in 2015, the Princeton Review named it the most beautiful college campus in the U.S.

Historic Sanford Walking Tours

About 25 miles north of Orlando, Sanford offers information for a number of free self-guided walking tours that showcase the city's rich history. Tours are planned out to highlight the historic commercial district, the historic residential district, the waterfront development around Lake Monroe, historic parks, points of interest for those curious about military or transportation history, the historic area around Georgetown and Sanford Avenues, and the historic Goldsboro area.

Totally Free Walking Tours in Orlando for Two

' src=

Most of us don’t have endless funds to spend on date night, but money doesn’t need to be a roadblock to spending quality time together. These free walking tours in Orlando will expand your mind while you bond over a new shared experience.

Moonlight Walking Tour at Greenwood Cemetery

Type of tour: Guided, outdoors Length: 2 hours Frequency: Once per month during the full moon Reservations required: Yes

The moonlight walking tour of Greenwood Cemetery is hardly a secret; each tour fills up quickly as online registration opens, and for good reason. Held once a month at Greenwood Cemetery under the light of a full moon, these free evening tours will expose you to a treasure trove of information about Orlando’s past and key figures that helped shape the city as we know it today. Don Price, the sexton at Greenwood Cemetery, leads each tour. Even if you’re already an Orlando history buff, Don’s engaging storytelling skills and sharp humor will hold your attention as you visit notable graves in the cemetery, which opened in 1880. Despite the eerie feeling of traipsing around a cemetery at night, this tour delights locals with pure history instead of spooky stories. It’s a must do for any Orlandoan.

Despite the large tour group size, tours fill up quickly. Registration is required and opens on Eventbrite one week prior to each tour. Set a reminder on your phone to sign up. You’ll be standing and walking for the duration of the 2-hour tour, so wear comfy shoes. A different charity is featured on each tour and you may bring along a cash donation if you’d like to contribute.

Downtown Orlando Historic Walking Tour

Type of tour: Guided, outdoors Length: 1.5 hours Frequency: First Friday of each month at 9:30am, or download the map for self-guided Reservations required: Yes

Couples wanting to learn more about Orlando’s history while visiting historical sites won’t want to miss the Downtown Historic Tour . Led by Richard Forbes, local Historic Preservation Officer, this 1.5-hour informative walking tour highlights buildings of historical significance in the Downtown Historic District. Bonus perk: attending the guided tour grants you free admission to the Orange County Regional History Center for the day. If you’d like to attend the tour, reservations are required and can be made by calling Rose Garlick at 407-246-3789.

Upcoming tour dates:

  • 2017: December 1
  • 2018: January 5, February 2, March 2, April 6, May 4

If you aren’t able to attend the guided tour, download the walking map for free and embark on a self-guided adventure. There are nearly 30 historical buildings included in the walking map, each with accompanying historical information. (Sounds like a great way to burn off some calories before a dinner date!)

Lakeridge Winery Tour and Tasting

Type of tour: Guided, indoors Length:  30-45 minutes Frequency: Every 30 minutes daily during open hours; the last tour departs at 3:45pm Reservations required: No

Located in Clermont on a 127-acre estate, Lakeridge Winery & Vineyards is a brief 30-minute drive from Orlando. You'll hardly feel like you're in Florida as you sip a glass of wine while looking at the rolling hills and lush vineyards. Lakeridge Winery produces wine from muscadine grapes which are native to Florida and are best utilized for sweet wines. If this is your first visit, you'll definitely want to partake in the free winery tour and tasting , which is offered every 30 minutes or so during open hours.  The tour itself lasts about 30 minutes and begins with an introduction video about Florida wine, the winery itself, and the winemaking process. Afterwards, you'll get a peek at the vineyards as your tour guide shares more information about the winery. The best part of the tour is saved for last, with a free guided tasting of 9 wines as well as suggested pairings.

I'd be remiss not to mention Lakeridge Winery's numerous yearly festivals. From the annual Harvest Grape Stomp to Winefest and a Wine & Seafood Festival, there's usually something going on at the winery every month. Admission to the winery, tour, and tasting is always free, but festivals are usually $5. If you visit during a festival, the winery tour & tasting will have a slightly different format. Instead of doing the tasting at the bar, you'll receive a small tasting glass for sampling wines at 7 stations throughout the winery.

The Alfond Inn Art Tour

Type of tour: Guided, indoors Length: 30-45 minutes Frequency: Sundays at 1pm Reservations required: No

While it’s totally worth it to splurge a little on a romantic staycation at The Alfond Inn , you can take a sneak peek at this boutique hotel without spending a penny. Along with luxurious furnishings, a romantic courtyard, and top-notch eats at Hamilton’s Kitchen , this stunning Winter Park hotel is also home to an impressive contemporary art collection. The art is part of the Alfond Collection of Contemporary Art, started by Rollins College graduates Theodore & Barbara Alfond. Most all of the collection is on display at The Alfond Inn for you to see. Treat your eyes and your mind by attending the weekly tour offered each Sunday at 1pm. A Cornell Fine Arts Museum staff member leads each tour.

Historic Walking Tour of Winter Park

Type of tour: Self-guided, outdoors Length: 20 stops to explore at your leisure Frequency: Anytime Reservations required: No

Date night on Park Avenue in Winter Park can be pricey, but it doesn’t have to cost a dime. Visit on a Saturday morning and take a stroll through Central Park, then wander through the Saturday morning Farmer’s Market and pick up a free Historic Walking Tour brochure. Winter Park has a rich history and stunning architecture, and you’ll get a feel for that as you embark on the self-guided walking tour. The tour includes more than 20 historical locations with accompanying background information. There are four optional stops including Casa Feliz, a historic home museum open for tours on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. If you visit Casa Feliz, trained docents lead tours during public open houses , or you can download this brochure for a self-guided tour. Visit all of the stops, or choose your own adventure and explore the ones that intrigue you most.

See Art Orlando Walking Tour

Type of tour: Self-guided, outdoors Length: 8 public art sculptures to visit at your leisure Frequency: Anytime Reservations required: No

The arts are alive in downtown Orlando thanks to monthly gallery hops, annual performance art events like Art in Odd Places and IMMERSE, spectacular performances at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, live music venues , and more. Added to the mix is See Art Orlando, a self-guided tour of eight public works of art permanently installed throughout downtown. Almost all of the installations are located around Lake Eola, so visit near sunset for added romantic ambiance. To experience the tour, just download the walking tour guide on your phone. The accompanying text for each installation provides insight on the work of each artist.

Personal tours by locals with original orlando tours, perfect your visit to the greatest tourist destination in the world with an orlando day tour – so many things to do in orlando beyond disney, with so many fun and unique things to do in orlando, we are unashamedly biased…but we love welcoming you as part of the 70 million annual visitors who come to orlando each year, many of who enjoy one or more of our original orlando tours to see “the other orlando”.

You are probably like most of those guests who will spend some portion of their vacation at Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and SeaWorld . But did you know, there are so many fantastic things to do in Orlando beyond those theme parks?

Often visitors need a break from the sweaty crowds and massive queue lines of Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and SeaWorld . Or they want to complement their visit with an unforgettable experience Orlando day tour to “see the other Orlando”. Many of our guests come for weeks or months and are hungry to see what else Orlando has to offer.

Well here’s a secret for you:

Native Orlandoans generally don’t go to the places that you go while you are in town!

Yes, we sometimes head over to Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and SeaWorld to share a day with friends or family when they are visiting. And while those theme parks do a great job in providing world class attractions, there are so many other things to do in Orlando.

The theme parks are just the beginning, but your visit isn’t truly complete unless you take in a least a portion of the hundreds of other things to do in Orlando that visitors rarely hear about.

“There are so many other things to do in Orlando”

So let’s do this! Push your vacation over the top when you take a break from the masses of humanity for a day with a local native tour by Original Orlando Tours, where you will also tour like a local to some of the hidden gems that we enjoy as Central Florida residents.

Have you ever swum in the pure waters of a natural spring? Ate blueberries right off the bush? Or observed wild gators and manatees in their natural habitats? Those are just a couple of the many things to do in Orlando once you get away from the concrete jungle of the tourist zone.

That’s how Original Orlando Tours was born.

If you live in Orlando for decades as we have, one thing is certain: you will have visitors, and plenty of them! Repeatedly! And our family loves seeing our friends and relatives come back each year, but each time they are looking for more things to do in Orlando besides the obvious ones. Fortunately for all of us, there are plenty of exciting things to do in Orlando and around the area.

Sunny is the mascot for Original Orlando Tours

So besides the big parks, what ARE the other things to do in Orlando?

As a starting point, we knew of dozens of hidden treasures throughout Central Florida. Old Florida attractions that were the places to visit on an Orlando vacation long before Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and SeaWorld came to town. Many are still open and inviting guests for a fun day trip from Orlando!

These Orlando attractions don’t have the budgets to compete with Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and SeaWorld . As a result, our friends and guests had never heard of many of these Orlando attractions, and often they had no idea these places even existed. But we know them well, and these Orlando attractions are eager to entertain you as many have done for decades.

Friends also asked us about things to do in Orlando that you couldn’t do any place else, or at least where they came from. So, we would take them on an old-fashioned Southern swim picnic! There they could swim, snorkel and kayak in crystal clear fresh water bubbling up from natural springs. Or we took them to observe nature from a sternwheeler , airboat , antique train or zipline .

They were excited to catch their own shrimp , or pick their own oranges , strawberries, blueberries and peaches .

Many times, they just wanted to find a pristine beach away from the crowds for a day. Or get tickets to local arts performance, or a UCF football, Orlando Magic, Orlando City Soccer or major football bowl game, but couldn’t get the best seats that we could.

On other visits, we took them to tour local wineries or to explore the shops and cafes of historic towns . Some wanted to visit local breweries or chocolate factories here. As a result of these trips and visits, we learned so much more ourselves about all the things to do in Orlando that even some other locals were not aware of.

We also turned into experts of a lot of local history. We became well-versed in all the presidents who vacationed in Orlando and their stories. We learned all about the areas celebrities and movie productions in Central Florida, and the story of how Orlando was Mr. Rogers’ neighborhood for a period of time .

And of course, there are magical things to do in Orlando during holidays!

Boy, do we know how to do holidays here! The best things to do in Orlando during the holidays are rarely known to our visitors. But we know them, and over the years we’ve been bringing dozens of friends and family along to share in those unforgettable experiences!

elvis lights up the room at the singing trees concert during an original orlando tours christmas tradition

No place on earth is as enchanting as Orlando at Christmas time!

We shared plenty of fun things to do in Orlando during other holidays too! There were fun times at local pumpkin patches or tours of the dark side of Orlando around Halloween. We visited the best places for an Easter Egg hunt in the spring and took in views of holiday fireworks above the heads of dolphins on the fourth of July.

Then our Orlando day tours formally became…Original Orlando Tours!

So we started sharing our knowledge with a portion of the region’s 70 million visitors, conducting Orlando day tours, for visitors to tour like a local and see the other Orlando hidden gems!

When we launched Original Orlando Tours, our goal was to treat all our guests just like family from day one.

We come pick you up at your hotel in air-conditioned comfort. We provide snacks and drinks along the way, just like we did for our own friends and relatives. And on the journey to that memorable destination, we share fascinating stories about Orlando that most don’t hear anywhere else.

You see, we travel too. We know how much it means to have a friendly face take you in when you visit their town. We’re a family business and we treat you like family too.

We’re so proud to share our hometown with you, but more importantly, our passion is to cap off your stay in Orlando with the most memorable experience that we can give you.

guests having a great time during an original orlando tours

About those theme parks…

And, yes, besides all the other things to do in Orlando that we love to show off, we do go to Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and SeaWorld too. And we have for 25 years. So, we not only know all the secrets, but we actually grew up with the parks.

Collectively, our family of guides have worked at Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and SeaWorld , as well as some of the other Orlando attractions for nearly 50 years before we were giving Orlando tours. Some of us have even walked Universal’s Islands of Adventure and CityWalk in hard hat and boots when it was still in dirt under construction.

This allows us to share our insight with you and your group to maximize your day at the park. We’ll get you as close to front gate as allowed by anyone. Once inside, we’ll get you to where you want to go and what you want to do without wasting your precious time. In most instances, we’ll be able to get you into express lanes and reserved seating. You’ll visit in style with efficiency and the flexibility to customize your unique Orlando tour day.

So why Original Orlando Tours again?

We want you to have a memorable great time! With so many things to do in Orlando besides Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and SeaWorld , you are only enjoying a small fraction of our town if you don’t join us to see the other Orlando.

We’ll come pick you up at the hotel and whisk you off to enjoy your day as you tour like a local. Along the way, you’ll learn fascinating facts from your local VIP guide as you enjoy snacks and drinks on any of our Orlando day tours. We treat you like visiting friends and family.

No one offers as many Orlando day tours as Original Orlando Tours does, so there are plenty of options to fit all types of interests. And if you are staying long enough, join us for a discounted second or third tour.

We love the Orlando area, and we love to make memories with our special guests as we see the thrills of joy and excitement on their faces during their time with Original Orlando Tours. Let us take you along for a VIP guided tour of Walt Disney World, Universal Studios or SeaWorld if you like. We’d love to make your day ultra-special.

But we really hope that with so many other fantastic things to do in Orlando, you let us sweep you away on a day tour to a special place; a place where lifetime memories will be made when you think of your awesome Orlando vacation, and your local day tour with Original Orlando Tours! Enjoy your stay!
