Reviews of this operator

We have just returned from a cosmos….

We have just returned from a Cosmos tour- Gourmet Tuscany. We stayed in Montecatini Terme and traveled from there to many wonderful places, in towns and the fabulous Tuscan countryside. We visit Vineyards for wine tastings, farms for cooking lessons and lunches and dinners in authentic Italian restaurants. All assisted by a friendly, informative tour director. First class holiday

Excellent in every respect

I recently did a 2-week "best of Italy" tour with this company. Our guide, Daniella, was fantastic, the itinerary was excellent and they catered for my rather difficult dietary requirements really well. Really happy and will certainly book with them again

A wonderrful experience

WE saw so much. The tour director Mladin was very knowledgeable and made the experience so enjoyable. The bus driver Paul was so nice and helpful. A couple of the hotels had no refrigerators to keep the water cold. We had to carry our own luggage to and from the rooms. There should have been porters to help us. Over all we had a great time.

Old South &Florida tour

Great organisation, tour guide(Kris) and driver(Tony) who went extra mile and good group of people from all over world. The hotels were excellent in New Orleans and Nashville and very good in other cities. The itinerary was well thought out with visits to Gracelands and Grande ole Oprey topping the bill. We added 3extra nights in New Orleans (giving us 6nights) which was absolutely fab and would advise anyone doing this tour that they consider some extra nights to see and do as much as you can

The tour director expertise and…

The tour director expertise and personality made the trip all the more pleasant. No stress. The local guides as well added to the beauty of this trip. They were knowledgeable and personable. I also have to mention the travelers (the group of 21). The people were friendly an accommodating. This is my third trip with this tour company and I will continue to travel with this company due to excellent planning and customer service. Thank you

Crowded House's new album Gravity Stairs proves Neil Finn still has that greatness

Five members of band Crowded House before a dark red background

Winter is upon us, which means fewer daylight hours to spend gallivanting in your local park and more time to kick up your feet and put on some new music.

If you don't know where to start, here are five new albums we think are worthy of your time. We hope you find something you'll love.

Crowded House – Gravity Stairs

black and white sketches of the members of rock band crowded house

Gravity Stairs — Neil Finn's eighth record with the world-conquering Crowded House — is testament to the timeless quality of his songwriting.

It's also a clear indication that the newest incarnation of this iconic band is gelling beautifully. They're a great advertisement for nepotism, as the frontman's sons Liam and Elroy continue to prove their musical and creative value across the new album.

Finn's songs remain the hero, though. When you hear him lightly channel Bowie on 'Some Greater Plan (for Claire)', deliver vintage melodies on 'All That I Can Ever Own', and lock in with his family and friends on the breezy chorus to 'Oh Hi', you'll be so glad that the man has never chosen to rest on his laurels.

Tempting as it may be to load up your playlist with vintage Crowded House classics, a few spins of Gravity Stairs will give you an even deeper appreciation for one of the all-time great bands. They tour Australia at the end of this year.

Cosmo's Midnight – Stop Thinking Start Feeling

Cosmo's Midnight pose back-to-back on the cover of third album against blue background in jeans, white top and sunglasses

Consisting of Sydney-bred producers and twin brothers Pat and Cosmo Liney, Cosmo's Midnight have been a fixture of Australia's electronic music scene for more than a decade.

The duo's credits include work for everyone from K-pop titans BTS to First Nations pop star Jessica Mauboy , but they truly shine making collaborative tunes on their own albums.

Following on from 2020's ARIA-nominated Yesteryear , their third studio effort has been a long time coming, recorded over three years between Australia, London and Los Angeles.

Despite six of the album's 10 tracks already having been released as singles, Stop Thinking Start Feeling doesn't feel overly familiar. Rather, it hangs together as a Venn diagram of highly polished dance-pop, silky disco and summery funk.

The Tkay Maidza-assisted 'Bang My Line' grooves and bops in ways Cosmo's grooviest, boppiest material hasn't before. 'Chance On You' grounds the otherworldly vocals of Kučka (a long-time collaborator of Flume's ) in a nocturnal funk setting.

Another banger, 'Borrowed Time', features the impeccably smooth vocals of rising Naarm talent Forest Claudette, and its flashy rhythms would perfectly soundtrack sipping a cocktail poolside or busting a move under a glitter ball.

The only better way to experience this album's slick brand of body-moving would be stepping outside for a real-life boogie by seeing Cosmo's Midnight on tour around the country in July . Go on, stop thinking about the rhythm and start feeling it.

Vince Staples – Dark Times

A black square with the words DARK TIMES in barely legible black text

Vince Staples isn't the biggest name in modern hip hop, but he's been one of the genre's most consistently captivating voices of the past decade. On his sixth album, Dark Times, the Californian rapper gives an insight into life's gloomier moments — from heartbreak to gang violence to mental health struggles.

While that's hardly new territory, Staples has a unique and gripping way with words. 'Justin' is a heartbreaking story about meeting a woman who very quickly breaks his heart. 'Little Homies' sees Staples as a role model, showing the younger generation how to seek out a fulfilling life and get through the hard times.

On 'Government Cheese' he raps about getting a call from a friend in prison, and not being able to come clean about how, despite his fame, his life isn't as great as it might seem.

Staples's work is always effortlessly clever, and his emotive but never overwrought storytelling on Dark Times is something to be treasured.

GIMMY – Things Look Different Now

Woman with short, balayge hair stands with her back to camera, holding up a TV with text written on screen

If you hold names like Courtney Barnett, Julia Jacklin and Stella Donnelly dear, you owe it to yourself to check out the debut album from GIMMY (pronounced "gimme"), the solo project of Byron region singer-songwriter Gemma Owens .

The record offers a smorgasbord of guitar-based goodness: There's atmospheric post-punk in the title track; a verandah-worthy, alt-country singalong in Oh Suzie; and Watered a Fern is distinctly Australian jangle-pop. There's also lashings of surf- and pub-rock, psychedelia, and intimate folk across the album's 47-minute run time.

A robust backing band deftly animates Owens's songwriting, but what really elevates this above your average indie rock release is Owens herself.

Her voice is instantly charming and her lyrics are effortlessly relatable, whether she's offering absurd, spoken-word innuendo on the New Wave-soaked ' Bathrooms' ("Can you touch my baguette?") or describing a romantic picnic on a budget. "Cheap wine will have to do while I'm still working at Woolies," she sings on ' Tell Me I'm Your Girl '.

She's also disarmingly vulnerable on songs that make excellent use of her tender, quivering vibrato, such as swooning stand-out 'Fall on Me'. Then there's the quietly devastating, misogyny-skewering 'My Body's My Body'.

"Do I have to get used to them glaring at my chest before breakfast? Didn't having sisters teach you about respect?" Owens laments, expressing an exhausting experience too many young women would be uncomfortably familiar with.

Things Look Different Now is an impressive debut that marks the arrival of an act with hugely promising talent.

For fans of: Julia Jacklin, Jeff Buckley, Angel Olsen

Tiny Habits – All for Something

Birds eye view of Boston trio Tiny Hands spinning in blurred motion on grey tarmac

With their exquisite vocal harmonies and classic folk-pop stylings, Boston-based trio Tiny Habits evoke a bygone era of songwriting circa Laurel Canyon in the 70s. Their origin story, however, is thoroughly modern.

Berklee College of Music students Maya Rae, Cinya Khan, and Judah Mayowa met in 2021 and began posting casual shot-on-campus videos to TikTok. Their intimate covers of Carly Rae Jepsen , Kacey Musgraves and Coldplay promptly went viral.

Tiny Habits now count both David Crosby and Phoebe Bridgers as fans, which is fitting given their sublime, closely stacked singing will (depending on your age demographic) remind you of Crosby, Stills & Nash or "sad girl" supergroup boygenius .

Debut album All for Something tugs at the heartstrings with sincere, poetic lyrics. But it also soothes the soul with warm, subtle production characterised by dusky finger-picking, gentle streaks of piano, slide guitar, and airy percussion.

'Flicker' concerns a dissolving relationship but feels like a loving hug, and the confessional 'Wishes' sees each member sharing painful truths but comes off more cathartic than concerning.

The emotional one-two of 'Broken' and 'Planting Flowers' suggests the trio are most comfortable crafting slow, sad ballads, but then they pick up the pace with the sunny burst of energy that is 'I Don't Have the Heart'.

If you're after easy listening that purges not-so-easy emotions, or a vital reminder of the simple magic of human voices singing together, look no further than Tiny Habits.

Taylor Swift Fans Wonder Why She Added Black Gloves for Tortured Poets Era at Eras Tour in Scotland

The 'Cardigan' singer debuted black gloves with her Vivienne Westwood 'Tortured Poets Department' dress in Edinburgh on Saturday, June 8

Taylor Swift debuted a new piece of clothing to her Eras Tour wardrobe during her stop in Edinburgh, Scotland!

Swifties on social media noticed that the "Down Bad" singer, 34, added a pair of elegant black gloves with the custom white Vivienne Westwood gown she wears during the Tortured Poets Department portion of her show while she was performing at Gas Murrayfield Stadium on Saturday, June 8.

"NEW BLACK GLOVES?!? Here’s my not-exciting theory: they’re for practical purposes," one fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter) , alongside a photo of Swift sporting the gloves.

"It’s chilly in Edinburgh. TTPD is long and she dances very little until 'Broken Heart.' Her hands need to be warm to avoid another acoustic-set hand cramp. So, gloves. But fashionable ones!"

Another user on X shared the same theory alongside a video of Swift singing the track "But Daddy I Love Him" from her latest album.

"Taylor is now wearing black gloves during the TTPD set tonight after her hand cramped from the cold yesterday," the person wrote. "(As someone who isn’t used to this weather even though it’s warm for locals, same Taylor, same.) #EdinburghTStheErasTour ."

It's a sound theory, as Deadline reported that the Grammy-winning singer paused her first show in Edinburgh on Friday, June 7, due to the cold.

"Oh God! Hand cramp!” she reportedly said. "I’m so sorry, everyone. This has never happened before, but my hand is frozen. I’m just going to warm it. I’m so embarrassed. My hand’s like a claw!"

Her first Eras Tour performance in the country was also eventful for a completely different reason — she watched a couple get engaged .

“I love performing this entire show in the sunlight, because I’m pretty sure I just, like, saw somebody getting engaged over here,” she told the crowd after performing "Cardigan," per a video posted on  Threads .

The PEOPLE Puzzler crossword is here! How quickly can you solve it? Play now !

She asked the couple if it happened and then confirmed for her fans that it did.

"You have no idea, I never get to see that, right? Because it’s, like, dark usually at night,” Swift explained. “But it’s not right now, so congratulations. Wow, I just saw that whole thing! Uh, man, that’s amazing. Thanks for doing that at my concert, that’s a big moment — huge!”

Despite the cold weather, Edinburgh had more than 17 hours of sunlight on Friday.

DECEMBER 1 – DUBLIN | National Stadium 2 – MANCHESTER | Albert Hall 4 – BRISTOL | O2 Academy Bristol 5 – LONDON | O2 Academy Brixton

Wolf previously revealed her new album was about “transition” in a press statement, focusing on her interpersonal relationships.

“I think in writing this record, there was no ounce of my life that was grounded except for this one relationship I have which a lot of the record is about”, she said. “And I love writing about love and the trials and tribulations of love, and of my own mind and living in my own body, so those themes are still running very strong.”

So far, Wolf has released the songs ‘Cinderella’, ‘Toro’ and ‘Alone in Miami’ in anticipation of the album.

We spoke to Remi Wolf back in 2022 to discuss touring with Lorde , saying “do again in a heartbeat”. “Ella’s amazing,” Wolf told us about the New Zealander. “I love the whole team, her whole band was awesome. It was just awesome to be able to go into all these incredible, iconic theatres in the US, and both do [my own] show and watch an incredible show every night.”

Wolf last released her debut album ‘Juno’ in 2021, which  NME  gave four stars: “Vulnerability and heartbreak knot ‘Buzz Me In’ and ‘Street You Live On’, while ‘Sally’ is steeped in minor tones, making it a welcome respite from the album’s eye-poppingly bright colour palette. These shadowier numbers, where Wolf emotes in a smoky timbre, are the record’s most striking moments.

“Ultimately, what these songs leave is a feeling that, for all the album’s brilliant shine, experimenting with darker styles might not go amiss for what’s next.”

In other news, Wolf has been announced to join Fuji Rock Festival in July this year alongside Kraftwerk ,  Girl In Red , Turnstile and more.

The Hall of Fame is largely an American thing, though Harrington fully understood that it was a label attached to the very best. That was the case particularly on the PGA TOUR Champions when he heard the “Hall of Fame” reference to so many of his peers, from Bernhard Langer and Vijay Singh, from Ernie Els to Fred Couples.

“You kind of look at these guys and you want to be one of them. You want to be part of it,” Harrington said. "And many of the guys on the Champions Tour, their careers were a little bit ahead of me so they were actually guys I would have looked up to when I was turning pro. They're guys I would have watched on TV at pro events.

“So it's nice to be part of that crowd.”

Harrington was to take his place among them Monday night at the first World Golf Hall of Fame induction ceremony since the shrine moved from St. Augustine, Florida, to Pinehurst when the USGA established a second home.

It is on the second floor of the USGA Experience building.

Harrington, whose 21 worldwide wins include The Open Championship in 2007 and 2008 and the PGA Championship in 2008, joins LPGA star Sandra Palmer as the only living inductees.

LPGA great Beverly Hanson, former Open champion and golf course architect Tom Weiskopf and former U.S. Open champion Johnny Farrell were to be inducted posthumously.

Also being inducted were the remaining seven founders of the LPGA – Alice Bauer, Bettye Danoff, Helen Dettweiler, Helen Hicks, Opal Hill, Sally Sessions and Shirley Spork – who will be going in as a group. The other six founders previous were inducted on their own.

It will be the largest World Golf Hall of Fame class since 2008.

Harrington was the star attraction in this class, an Irishman with one of the great minds who was willing to try anything to get better and often did. He got his first big breakthrough at Carnoustie in 2007 when he overcame a double bogey on the final hole to beat Sergio Garcia to win The Open.

A year later, he won The Open at Royal Birkdale and then became the first European winner of the PGA Championship in 78 years.

He had three other wins on the PGA TOUR, 12 other wins on the DP World Tour and five other on circuits around the world. He also played on six Ryder Cup teams and was captain in the 2021 matches at Whistling Straits.

Harrington, 52, has seven wins on the PGA TOUR Champions, including the U.S. Senior Open two years ago.

“When you’re in your career and you win tournaments and you receive awards and accolades, you always assume they’re going to be there and you’re going to keep winning. You always think there’s going to be another one,” he said. "You maybe don't enjoy them the way you should at the time.

“So by getting into the Hall of Fame it brings a lot of emotions. Validation, no doubt about it. Satisfaction, no doubt about it. It’s a deep-set satisfaction that I’ve done it and I’ve done well.”

Palmer was a two-time major champion among her 19 LPGA victories. She went seven years before winning her first LPGA event in 1971, and then she won with alarming regularity. Her first major was the 1975 U.S. Open.

Weiskopf, who died in August 2022 of pancreatic cancer, won 16 times on the PGA TOUR and captured his lone major at Royal Troon in The Open. His contributions extended to golf architecture and candid, unfailingly accurate commentary on television. His design work was known for the short par 4s, among the most exciting and enjoyable holes.

Hanson was renowned not only for what she won but whom she beat. The North Dakota native won 17 times on the LPGA and three majors. She won her first event as a pro by beating Babe Zaharias, and she won two of her majors by beating Louise Suggs.

Farrell previously was a member of the PGA Hall of Fame in Pinehurst before it moved to Florida under the name World Golf Hall of Fame. A 22-time winner, he was famous for his one-shot victory in a 36-hole playoff against Bobby Jones in the 1928 U.S. Open. He spent the second half of his life as a club pro at Quaker Ridge and Baltusrol.

Portugal and Ireland cross paths again as Cristiano Ronaldo nears another landmark

Portugal, with 41-year-old pepe at the heart of their defence, are justifiably one of the favourites for euro 2024.

Describing any footballer as the star player of his country would ordinarily be considered the ultimate compliment. For Cristiano Ronaldo , however, this description underestimates both his playing talents and his astrological status, which received a significant upgrade in 2015 when an entire galaxy (the “Cosmos Redshift 7″) was named after him.

On Tuesday Ronaldo faces Ireland in what might well be his last international on home soil. In a senior international career of 21 years and counting, Ronaldo has scored 128 goals in 206 matches and is in the happy position of breaking records every time he takes to the field. Next week Ronaldo will become the first person to appear in six European Championships – a tournament in which he already holds the records both for appearances (25) and goals (14).

Ronaldo has a response to critics who think he shows too much interest in personal records for a performer in a team sport. In May when his 35 strikes for Al-Nassr set a new record for goals scored in a Saudi Pro League season, Ronaldo informed his 631 million followers on Instagram with characteristic modesty that “I do not follow the records, the records follow me”.

Unfortunately, our defenders did not follow Ronaldo sufficiently closely during Ireland’s last visit to Portugal, in September 2021 for a World Cup qualifier, so Ireland went from leading 1-0 in the 89th minute to losing 2-1, thanks to a late Ronaldo double that made him the highest scorer in the history of international football.

Ireland eye rare win against Portugal side likely to be distracted by Euro 2024

The reverse fixture two months later at Lansdowne Road finished 0-0, with Ronaldo returning to the city where he made his Real Madrid debut at Tallaght Stadium in 2009. The only other time that Ireland and Portugal were in the same World Cup qualifying group was for the 2002 tournament. This proved much more memorable for the Boys in Green, with the countries playing out a pair of 1-1 draws that enabled both to qualify for the finals at the expense of the Netherlands.

The two countries took an even more gentlemanly approach to qualification in 1950 when Scotland pulled out of the World Cup at the last minute. Fifa offered the vacant spot to Portugal and when they refused Ireland were invited to compete but they too declined. On possibly the only occasion in their entire history when the FAI could be accused of excessive financial prudence, they believed that the £2,700 cost of travelling to Brazil would bankrupt them.

Less happily, Irish supporters of a certain vintage still hold Portuguese referee Raul Nazare to blame for our failing to qualify for the 1982 World Cup on goal difference. In the crucial qualifier away to Belgium, Nazare disallowed a Frank Stapleton goal for reasons that, more than four decades later, remain utterly inexplicable.

Although Portugal and Ireland joined Fifa on the same day in 1923 they did not play against each other until 1946. Portugal won that friendly in Lisbon 3-1 in what was Ireland’s first international for seven years. In 1972 the countries met in the Brazilian Independence Cup in Recife, with Portugal winning 2-1 in a match in which José Mourinho’s goalkeeper father Félix won his only international cap as a late substitute.

Unfortunately Uefa’s forensic seeding system means Irish and Portuguese teams now rarely clash in Europe. In 1989 Derry City’s reward for becoming the only side to secure a domestic treble was a European Cup tie against Benfica, then managed by Sven-Goran Eriksson. Among the visiting contingent was Eusébio, who was invited on to the Brandywell pitch to draw the half-time raffle.

In 2010 Sporting Fingal played the only European tie of their short existence against Marítimo in the Europa League, with the Portuguese side progressing 6-4 on aggregate. The following year Dublin was the venue for the only all-Portuguese European final ever, when Porto beat Braga 1-0 to win the 2011 Europa League at the Aviva Stadium .

A number of outstanding Irish talents are based in Portugal. Currently on the books of Marítimo is Ireland under-21 international Mipo Odubeko while Ireland under-19 international Cristiano Fitzgerald (named after you know who) plays for Estrela. Expected to join the exodus is 16-year-old Cork City winger Jaden Umeh, who is close to completing his move to Benfica.

Waterford United striker Pádraig Amond had a spell Paços de Ferreira but the most successful Irish exports remain Mickey Walsh, who won back-to-back titles with Porto in 1985 and 1986, and Phil Babb, who won the league and cup double with Sporting Lisbon in 2002. Athlone Town’s Portuguese manager Dario Castelo has made the reverse journey.

cosmos tours ireland 2024

Portugal won the European Championships in 2016 and the inaugural Nations League in 2019. Since January 2023 the Seleção have been managed by Roberto Martínez, who spent the previous six years in charge of Belgium’s “golden generation”, during which time he conspicuously failed to win any actual gold, with his tenure ending following an embarrassing group stage exit at the 2022 World Cup.

In perhaps the greatest example of failing upwards in modern international football, weeks later Martínez was announced as the new manager of Portugal. Ironically at Euro 2020 Martínez had ended Portugal’s reign as European champions, overseeing Belgium’s 1-0 victory over them in the round of 16. Martínez has made an excellent start with Portugal, who are the only team to qualify for Euro 2024 with a flawless record having won all 10 qualifiers, benefiting from having both the competition’s most potent attack (36 goals scored) and the meanest defence (2 goals conceded), which remarkably is still marshalled by the evergreen 41-year-old Pepe.

Unsurprisingly this outstanding form makes Portugal one of the favourites to win Euro 2024. However, nobody expects similar success at club level any time soon for reasons that have little to do with football. Portugal’s most successful club are Benfica, who won the European Cup in 1961 and 1962, only to see their brilliant coach Béla Guttmann dramatically quit having been denied a pay rise before declaring “not in 100 years will Benfica ever be European Champions again”. Suitably jinxed, Benfica were transformed into Portugal’s version of the Mayo football team, qualifying for eight European finals since Guttmann departed and losing all of them, with his curse still having nearly four decades to run.

Visiting Europe, Biden Will Find Both Solidarity and Isolation

The president arrived in France for a visit meant to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasion and showcase Western unity. But even as he rallies American allies in defense of Ukraine, he will defy them on the war in Gaza.

President Biden in a suit and tie with a French official as others line up in front of him in tarmac.

By Michael D. Shear and Peter Baker

Michael D. Shear and Peter Baker are both in Paris covering President Biden’s trip.

As President Biden visits France this week, he will be rallying European leaders to his side and showcasing the resolve he has helped to foster on behalf of Ukraine.

But he will also be defying the very same leaders and standing virtually alone among Western democracies still firmly in support of Israel as it wages war in Gaza.

Mr. Biden arrived in Paris on Wednesday morning for a trip aimed at celebrating the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasion. It is his first visit to Europe since the Oct. 7 terrorist attack led by Hamas, which killed 1,200 people in Israel and triggered a military retaliation that has killed about 36,000 people in Gaza. Next week he will return to Europe for a summit in Italy with the leaders of the Group of 7 nations, and three weeks after that he will host the 75th anniversary summit of NATO nations in Washington.

The series of meetings will put Mr. Biden in a position he has not experienced since becoming president: He will be embraced and isolated at the same time by the same group of allies he has courted for nearly four years. For a president who has emphasized his support for America’s traditional alliances, it represents a challenge that will test his diplomatic skills in unfamiliar ways.

“Gaza undermines the moral clarity of the argument they want to make about Ukraine,” said Peter Beinart, a professor of journalism and politics at the City University of New York and a longtime analyst of Middle East affairs who has been critical of Israel’s government. “The Gaza war makes that story a lot less compelling to a lot of people.”

Ivo Daalder, who was an ambassador to NATO under President Barack Obama, acknowledged the tension in Mr. Biden’s approach.

“Yes, it seems to be slightly contradictory to be making one argument on Russia and another argument on Israel,” said Mr. Daalder, who now serves as president of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. “But the situations are different. One was attacked, and the other did the attacking. It’s pretty big.”

The European allies, with a couple of notable exceptions, have been strongly aligned with Washington for more than two years in the multinational campaign to defeat Russia after its invasion of Ukraine, broadly matching American investments in the war with their own commitments to Kyiv. But the Europeans have grown increasingly critical of how Israel is conducting its operation in Gaza over the past nine months, even as the Biden administration has rejected efforts by the chief prosecutor at the International Criminal Court to seek arrest warrants for Israeli leaders on war crime charges.

The disparate priorities will play out at an event on Thursday meant to showcase Western unity and resolve. The D-Day landings at Normandy on June 6, 1944, will be celebrated as a high-water mark of the alliance that defeated Nazi Germany. President Emmanuel Macron of France will host leaders of the World War II partner countries, including King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of Britain and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada, representing the two nations that joined the United States in staging the climactic amphibious invasion.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany, representing the vanquished enemy, will also attend in a show of Europe’s reconciliation. Not present, however, will be President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, despite the Soviet Union’s alliance with the West during the war. Mr. Macron’s government initially invited lower-level Russian representatives to participate but rescinded the offer after objections stemming from Moscow’s aggression in Ukraine.

By contrast, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine will attend the ceremony, an opportunity for him to press Western leaders for more aid. White House officials said on Tuesday that Mr. Biden would meet with Mr. Zelensky while in France and then again during the G7 gathering in Italy.

John F. Kirby, a White House spokesman, said Mr. Biden knew that not every nation agrees with his policies. “Disagreements with allies and partners is not something new to President Biden,” Mr. Kirby said, “any more than unity and cooperation and collaboration, which he also fosters across a range of issues.”

The meetings between Mr. Biden and the allies come at a critical moment in both Europe and the Middle East. Ukraine is trying to fend off an escalating Russian offensive that threatens to break through its eastern defenses in a decisive way after two years of grinding combat. Hundreds of miles away, Israel and Hamas are both under pressure to agree to a cease-fire deal that could be the final chance for a path toward a more sustainable peace in the region.

Mr. Biden on Friday outlined such a cease-fire agreement that would eventually lead to the release of all hostages held by Hamas, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and a “permanent” end to the war. By advancing a deal that Europeans can support, the president may have found a way to minimize differences when he is in Paris.

The Group of 7 nations, including the United States, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan, issued a statement on Monday endorsing the deal that Mr. Biden outlined and calling on Hamas to accept it. Mr. Biden characterized the deal as a proposal put forward by Israel but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not explicitly endorsed or rejected it publicly as he navigates his own domestic politics and seeks advantage in any renewed negotiations with Hamas.

At the same time, Mr. Biden addressed another difficult issue before the trip by authorizing Ukraine for the first time to use U.S.-provided weapons against targets inside Russia for self-defense in limited circumstances, something France, Britain, Germany, Poland and other allies had already embraced .

“The only way out of such a dilemma is to push ahead on both problems — help Ukraine do better or win and get Israel on a path to peace,” said Dan Fried, a retired diplomat now at the Atlantic Council in Washington. “Hence the decision to lift some restrictions on Ukraine’s use of U.S. arms and to push a complex and ambitious peace plan” in Gaza.

Still, the differences remain real and stark. Spain, Ireland and Norway formally recognized an independent Palestinian state last week, just days after the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to halt its military offensive in the city of Rafah in southern Gaza. Most European governments have endorsed the war crimes action against Israel at the International Criminal Court. “France supports the International Criminal Court, its independence and the fight against impunity in all situations,” the country’s foreign ministry said in a statement .

France has not acted to recognize a Palestinian state but did vote in the United Nations in May to support including Palestine as a full member of the organization. Britain, which is no longer a part of the European Union, abstained from that vote.

Critics of Mr. Biden said he has no one to blame for his diplomatic challenges in Europe but himself for an inconsistent approach to international crises.

“The contradiction, I think, is in American policy,” said Peter Rough, the director of the Center on Europe and Eurasia at the Hudson Institute and a former aide to President George W. Bush. “In Ukraine, he’s backing Ukraine against the Russian-Iranian alliance, while in Gaza he is managing Israel, even limiting it, as it confronts an Iranian proxy.”

From the other side of the spectrum, some foreign policy veterans said Mr. Biden has brought troubles upon himself by being too supportive of Israel.

“I am not at all sure that Biden has made the right choices on Israel-Gaza, although I acknowledge that he’s in a tough spot, as is our country,” said Eric Rubin, a longtime U.S. diplomat and the former president of the American Foreign Service Association. “Israel has lost the sympathy of most other countries and their citizens, and we won’t see it get it back in our lifetimes, I fear.”

But at the end of the day, some diplomats said, France and the other allies ultimately defer to the United States when it comes to such issues. And even though he will find them on different pages, Mr. Biden enjoys a constructive relationship with his peers, unlike his predecessor, and possible successor, Donald J. Trump, who berated European allies over their disagreements and left them dreading his potential return to office.

“The United States still plays the indispensable role,” said Mr. Daalder. “Everybody is looking to us to figure out how do we deal with Russia, how do we deal with China, and frankly even how do we deal with Israel. We’re still looked at by our friends and by our adversaries as the ones who will determine the outcome.”

Gayle King Says Oprah Was Hospitalized Over Stomach Bug, Stuff 'Out of Both Ends'

Taylor swift shuts down show until security helps fan in viral video, taylor swift shuts down show to help fan ... 'i can do this all night'.

Taylor Swift 's serious about her fans' health ... straight-up refusing to sing until security could get to someone who apparently needed help -- and narrating the whole situation.

New video -- now circulating on X -- shows the singer-songwriter onstage in Edinburgh, Scotland Friday ... strumming the notes to her song "Would've, Could've, Should've" before she sees a few of her fans in her crowd she feels need assistance.

Over the microphone, Taylor says there's someone right in front of her who needs help ... and adds she's not going to sing until event staff rushes to aid the fans.

Tay even uses her guitar to point to the group in need ... singing a jaunty, little tune about how she's just going to keep playing her guitar until someone physically gets to the group.

Basically, it takes a while before Swift's able to keep the concert going -- but, her fans seem to love it ... cheering on their queen for keeping an eye out for supporters in trouble.

This is a pretty common theme for the "Eras" tour ... Swift's called attention to fans in trouble in the past -- including in France last weekend where she actually pointed them out to staff in some pretty impressive French.

No need to flex her knowledge of other languages this time ... but, another example of Taylor proving she really cares about her Swifties.

Taylor's got one more show in Edinburgh kicking off this evening before heading a few hours south to Liverpool where she'll play three concerts on Father's Day weekend.

Hopefully, no issues at that performance ... but, we know Swift will be all over it if there are.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

cosmos tours ireland 2024

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

cosmos tours ireland 2024

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

cosmos tours ireland 2024

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

cosmos tours ireland 2024

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

cosmos tours ireland 2024

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
