30 Self-Guided Walking & Driving Tours of Greater Philadelphia

How to do philly your own way — and at your own pace....

Copied to Clipboard

Sometimes the best way to learn something new — or discover history that’s hidden in plain sight — is to explore on your own.

Take advantage of these self-guided driving and walking tours of Greater Philadelphia that put you in control of when and how you explore top attractions and important historical sites.

Great for solo excursions or small groups, these self-guided explorations (many of which are free!) are an excellent way to uncover interesting facts about Philadelphia — and encounter surprises along the way.

Philly’s self-guided tours also span a wide range of interests. Get an immersive history lesson on the nation’s Founding Fathers; take your time exploring significant stops along the Underground Railroad; learn the story behind the city’s jaw-dropping architecture; or indulge in a curated culinary journey sampling the city’s most quintessential foods.

Want a little more interactivity? Some experiences offer scavenger hunts that let you upload photos of their finds, while others include augmented reality apps that transform the world in front of your eyes.

Check out our guide below for a list of great self-guided walking and driving tours to help you explore Philadelphia and the Countryside on your own.

History: Black History

7th ward legacy reclaimed self-guided tours.

The art and history experience Legacy Reclaimed: A 7th Ward Tribute honors the lives — and lesser-known history — of 19th-century Black residents of Philadelphia’s old 7th Ward. An important part of the Underground Railroad and Great Migration, the 7th Ward was the former home to 15,000 Black residents including Octavius V. Catto and W.EB. Du Bois. Legacy Reclaimed ’s self-guided tour brochure takes you to two dozen historically significant homes, landmarks and institutions throughout what is now known as Society Hill and Washington Square West .

Where: Various locations including Church of the Crucifixion, 807 Bainbridge Street

Anti-Slavery Walking Tours from The Philadelphia Inquirer

Exterior of Mother Bethel

Philadelphians were heavily involved in the abolitionist movement, and the Underground Railroad passed through the city, helping enslaved people find freedom here and north into Canada. Two free audio tours from The Philadelphia Inquirer guide people through Old City and Society Hill and around Northwest Philadelphia to visit anti-slavery landmarks like Congo Square (now Washington Square ), a convening space and burial ground for the Black community; and Germantown’s Johnson House Historic Site , which served as an Underground Railroad stop and may have even hosted Harriet Tubman.

Where: Various locations including Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church, 419 S. 6th Street

Black History Historical Marker Tour from The Philadelphia Inquirer

Exterior of the Paul Robeson House in Philadelphia

Philadelphia’s history is rich with important moments involving the Black community , many of which aren’t tied to a specific attraction. Fortunately, historical markers around the city help preserve these legacies. This map from The Philadelphia Inquirer can help you wind your way through the city and learn more about 19th- and 20th-century painter Henry Ossawa Tanner; the Christian Street YMCA, where a young Wilt Chamberlain got his start; and Laura Wheeler Waring, who painted portraits of W.E.B. DuBois and Marian Anderson.

Where: Various locations including the Paul Robeson House, 4951 Walnut Street

Sweet Chariot: The Long Journey Through Time

Part walking tour, part high-tech scavenger hunt, Sweet Chariot empowers visitors to uncover history that is often hidden in plain sight. Using a map and a smartphone app, visitors search for murals, plaques and other landmarks to unlock immersive videos and clues as they trace hidden stories of the Black struggle for freedom in Philadelphia. The experience begins in Washington Square and ultimately leads to the final resting place of Amelia Brown, who was uncovered in an 18th-century graveyard during a construction project in 2013.

Where: Various locations including Washington Square Park, 210 W. Washington Square

History: The American Revolution

Where: Various locations including Franklin Court, 317 Chestnut Street

Official Audio Tour of Valley Forge National Historical Park

Group of four adults walking on a gravel path with reconstructed log soldiers' huts at Valley Forge National Historical Park on a summer day.

No battles were fought in Valley Forge , but the time the Continental Army encamped here in 1777 and 1778 went down as one of the Revolutionary War’s most trying periods. Take a deep dive into Valley Forge’s history at your own pace via the park’s official audio tour, available for purchase to stream or on CD . Drive through the park, accompanied by period music, while character voices help you envision the 18th-century encampment during a 60-minute tour.

History: LGBTQ+ History

Lgbtq+ history tour from the philadelphia inquirer.

walking tour guide

Philadelphia was the site of the country’s first major demonstration for LGBTQ+ rights, the Annual Reminders , in 1965. But Philly’s history of equality activism long predates that and continues today, as evidenced by the city’s public art, historical markers and notable LGBTQ+ institutions that honor people and events that paved the way. This self-guided LGBTQ+ history tour from The Philadelphia Inquirer visits many of these sites, including the historic marker for John Fryer, who helped declassify homosexuality as a mental illness, and Giovanni’s Room, the country’s longest-running LGBTQ+ bookstore.

Historic Downtown Denver Walking Tour

This walking tour will take you to some of the best spots in Downtown Denver, where the city’s past and present come together in utterly unique ways. Many of the sites and buildings are listed as official Denver landmarks or included in the National Register of Historic Places. Many also have markers and plaques noting their original intended purpose and construction dates.

Use the  16th Street Mall  as your home base. Designed in 1982 by I.M. Pei, the 16th Street Mall is a mile-long pedestrian promenade lined with outdoor cafés, flower baskets and retail shops, making it the perfect starting point for an adventure-filled day.

Free shuttles travel both directions the entire length of the mall from early morning to late at night. They stop at every intersection, making it easy to cover a lot of ground in a short period of time. So, grab a cup of coffee and let the day begin!

LoDo (Lower Downtown)

This area comprises a 25-block area that just a decade ago wasn’t much more than abandoned warehouses and rail yards. Today, it has been restored and renovated to create  LoDo  (Lower Downtown), one of the liveliest areas in the city — not to mention one of the most historic.

Denver Union Station

Start your tour of the area at the newly renovated  Denver Union Station . At its height, 70 trains a day passed through Denver. Not quite as many trains pass through Union Station these days, but the beautiful building (originally constructed in 1881) still attracts visitors with its Beaux-Arts-style design, expansive interior, stone clock tower and uber-popular shops, restaurants, bars and cocktail lounges.

Cross Wynkoop Street and learn about the early history of the area from historic markers that can be found on buildings at 1801 Wynkoop St. (Littleton Creamery / Beatrice Foods Cold Storage Warehouse) and 1635 17th St. (Denver City Cable Railway Building).

Coors Field

Keep walking down Wynkoop towards  Coors Field , the home of the  Colorado Rockies , Denver's hometown Major League Baseball team, established in 1993. Constructed in the mid-90s, the ballpark has earned a reputation as one of the best in the country, combining state-of-the-art technology with a nostalgic ambiance. It was modeled after the Camden Yards Ballpark in Baltimore, and its red-brick construction matches the red-brick architecture of much of LoDo. Don’t miss the baseball art displays as you enter from Wynkoop.

Oxford Hotel

Your next LoDo stop is the classic  Oxford Hotel , the oldest still-standing hotel in Denver, constructed in 1891. You’ll find a historical marker on the outside that will give you the lowdown on this LoDo gem. Inside, take a look (and grab a cocktail) at the  Cruise Room , an Art-Deco bar designed after a lounge on the Queen Mary cruise ship.

Rockmount Ranch Wear

Just across the street from the Oxford on Wazee is the famed  Rockmount Ranch Wear . A Denver original, fashion pioneer Papa Jack Weil invented the Western snap-button shirt and opened shop back in 1946. Jack passed away at the grand old age of 107 in 2008, but not before he sold his shirts to presidents and rock stars like Eric Clapton and Bruce Springsteen. Stop by the flagship store, now run by Papa Jack's grandson, to browse the incredible selection of Western-style shirts, hats and accessories.

The tour ends at a local distillery. Along the way, you'll learn about the city's founding. It's more of a history tour with drinking rather than a pub crawl. (You must be at least 21.)

LoDo Walking Tour On this two-hour tour, your savvy local guide will share Lower Downtown's fascinating history and point out local hotspots.

Coors Field

Larimer Square

More Denver history can be found in  Larimer Square . It was here that the city got its name, when, in the 1850s, representatives from various settlements in the area got together over a barrel of whiskey and decided to consolidate their resources under one name. Denver was originally named after James Denver, the Kansas territorial governor at the time, following the merging of the settlements of Denver City and Auraria. Today, Larimer Square is one of the most stylish spots in the city, with high-end fashion boutiques, chef-owned restaurants and cafés and much more. Note: If you continue walking north on 15th Street, you can get to such popular attractions as the  Downtown Aquarium  and the  Children’s Museum of Denver at Marsico Campus  and hot neighborhoods like  Highland .

Tattered Cover Book Store

Located at McGregor Square , you’ll encounter one of Denver’s most treasured attractions — the independently owned and operated  Tattered Cover Book Store . Of course, calling Tattered Cover merely a “bookstore” is doing it some injustice. Its multileveled location is filled wall to wall with books, magazines, greeting cards, gifts and souvenirs. There’s also a bar. This is an ideal spot to take a break and settle in with a good book — browsing is strongly encouraged! Tattered Cover also has several other locations.

MCA Denver – Museum of Contemporary Art Denver

Much of what you’ll find in LoDo still retains its historic feel, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for modern architectural wonders, too. Case in point:  Museum of Contemporary Art Denver , at 15th and Delgany, designed by cutting-edge London architect David Adjaye. Its sleek interior houses works by some of today’s most innovative artists, and the rooftop café offers a stunning view of downtown.

Millennium Bridge

Connecting  Riverfront Park  and the  16th Street Mall  is the  Millennium Bridge,  constructed in 2002. This unique tubular steel footbridge was designed to resemble the mast of a great ship, stretching an impressive 200 feet into the sky. Either climb the stairs or take the glass elevator to the top. From there, you’ll be treated to a great view of downtown, as well as the Platte River. On the other side of the bridge, Riverfront Park is a wonderful spot to relax and enjoy the gently rolling Platte River.

D&F Tower and Tabor Center in Denver, Colorado

Theatre District/Center of Downtown

Okay, you’ve explored LoDo — time to head to the center of downtown. Either walk up 16th Street or hop on the free 16th Street Mall Shuttle. The Theatre District is a few blocks west on 14th Street, highlighted by the incredible  Denver Performing Arts Complex .

Daniels & Fisher Tower

Hear those bells tolling? That’s the  D&F Tower (Daniels & Fisher) , one of 16th Street’s most distinctive buildings. When it was completed in 1910, this was the highest building west of the Mississippi River. It is modeled after The Campanile (St. Mark’s Bell Tower) in the Piazza San Marco in Venice, and its four clocks (one for each side) are a whopping 16 feet high. So, if you’re caught without a watch, just look up. The tower was built to house one of Denver's largest early 19th-century department stores. Today, the basement of the D&F Tower has been renovated into  The Clocktower Cabaret , an entertainment venue.

Denver Performing Arts Complex/Colorado Convention Center

Ground zero for the Denver performing arts world is, naturally, the  Denver Performing Arts Complex (DPAC) . Located in the heart of downtown at 14th and Curtis Streets, the DPAC houses the 2,700-seat Boettcher Concert Hall (the nation’s first in-the-round concert hall), the Helen Bonfils Theatre Complex (with four separate stages), the 2,830-seat Temple Hoyne Buell Theatre, the Donald R. Seawell Grand Ballroom and the Ellie Caulkins Opera House. The  Denver Center Theatre Company  makes its home here and since 1979 has created an impressive body of classic and contemporary drama and world premieres.

In addition to the excellent performances happening indoors, downtown Denver is also filled with fun public art — pretty much everywhere you look you’ll see something. Over at the Denver Performing Arts Complex, get an eyeful of the fifty-foot-tall “Dancers.” Around the corner at the  Colorado Convention Center  is “I See What You Mean,” a.k.a. the  Blue Bear . Designed by Denver-based artist Lawrence Argent, this curious, 40-foot-tall bear has rapidly become a Denver icon and is a great spot for a family photo. The public art in Denver isn’t all visual either. Stroll down the 1500 block of Curtis Street and you’ll hear Jim Green’s “Soundwalk” — there are speakers under six ordinary-looking grates connected to a tape recorder in a nearby building, playing 40 to 100 selections per hour, including rumbling, gurgling water and other whimsical sounds.

Equitable Building

The  Equitable Building , built in 1892 at the corner of 17th and Stout streets, was designed in the lavish Italian Renaissance Revival style and features some stunning stained-glass windows inside. Look for the historic marker on the exterior to learn more about this downtown landmark, once the tallest building in the city before it was surpassed by the  D&F Tower .

Paramount Theatre

The   Paramount Theatre  is one of many historic theaters in Denver. Built in 1930, the Paramount was originally a classic Art Deco movie house; today, it hosts an amazing array of live music and performing arts. Look for the historic marker on the exterior to learn more.

Trinity United Methodist Church

Designed in 1887 by Robert Roeschlaub, Colorado’s first licensed architect, the  Trinity United Methodist Church  is a splendid example of the Gothic Revival style. The church was constructed entirely out of rhyolite from Castle Rock, Colorado, and it features a stained-glass window by the Tiffany & Co. Head inside to gawk at the gargantuan Roosevelt Pipe Organ — with its network of thousands upon thousands of pipes, it can make quite a sound.

Colorado State Capitol

Golden triangle.

At the end of the  16th Street Mall , you’ll come upon the  Golden Triangle , one of Denver’s cultural hubs, with museums (naturally), restaurants and shopping options galore. The neighborhood is also home to several wonderful art galleries, all worth a visit.

Civic Center Park

The splendid  Civic Center Park   resulted from the inspiration fostered by the "City Beautiful Movement" following the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. Elements of well-designed and beautiful parkways, fountains and tree landscaping were merged together in this space and in many other U.S. city park beautification programs. The  City and County Building , completed in 1932, anchors the west end of this park. During the summer months, Civic Center Park hosts multiple fun festivals. From Civic Center Park you can look over many of downtown’s architectural gems, including the  Denver Public Library ,   designed by Michael Graves, and the original 28-sided  Denver Art Museum , designed by Gio Ponti. Nearby, you’ll find the  Center for Colorado Women’s History at Byers-Evans House Museum , which was built in 1883 and is now a museum, and the  U.S. Mint , modeled after the Plazzo Medici-Riccardi in Florence, which was built in 1904. Civic Center Park is also full of public art, from Old West-inspired pieces to modern wonders.

Modeled after the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., the 272-foot-high dome of  Colorado’s State Capitol  is covered with 200 ounces of 24KT gold leaf. However, the truly priceless material is inside, where the entire world’s supply of Colorado Rose Onyx was used as wainscoting. No more of the ultra-rare, rose-colored stone has been found since. Construction on the building began in 1886 and was finally completed in 1908. Free tours of the Capitol offer this and other tidbits of information, as well as visits to the Senate and House of Representatives chambers.

Denver Art Museum

One of the city’s architectural jewels, the  Denver Art Museum's  striking Frederic C. Hamilton Building opened to rave reviews in October 2006. Its bold, jagged look was inspired by the Rocky Mountains and by the geometric rock crystals found in the foothills near Denver. The museum recently celebrated the reopening of the Martin Building (formerly known as the North Building). First opened in 1971, the building was designed by Italian architect Gio Ponti and Denver-based James Sudler Associates. The building has been fully renovated with expanded gallery space, plus stunning views of the city skyline and Rocky Mountains. The building showcases Asian art, Indigenous arts of North America, Northwest Coast and Alaska Native, European and American art before 1900, Latin American and art of the ancient Americas, photography, textile art and fashion, and Western American art collections.

The Perfect Self-Guided Walking Tour of Seattle

Seattle, Washington. The heart of the Pacific Northwest, Seattle is a city renowned for grunge music, Starbucks Coffee, and rain. With an abundance of awesome sights, from the (kinda icky) Gum Wall at Pike Place Market to the towering Seattle Space Needle, the best way to admire all of these iconic landmarks is on a self-guided walking tour of Seattle !

As I was born and raised in Vancouver, I’ve frequently embarked on a weekend trip to Seattle. And in all my time there, I’ve never gotten bored of a few key areas: the Pike Place Historic District, Seattle Center, Pier 57… and with all these spots being within easy walking distance, the best way to visit them is by foot.

A Public Market sign at the edge of Pike Place on a sunny day, an essential stop on every walking tour of Seattle

Needless to say, you’ll be visiting all of these top Seattle spots on this walking tour . So without further ado, let’s begin: this is my self-guided Seattle walking tour.

Before we dive into all the stops on our walking tour of Seattle, remember that you can make whatever changes and modifications you’d like. That’s the best thing about self-guided walking tours ; you have the ultimate freedom to decide where to go!

With that being said, according to Google Maps, this Seattle walking tour covers 1.9 miles (3.06 km) and will take 40 minutes to complete. However, it doesn’t include all the time (and steps) you’ll spend browsing around. So, I recommend taking a full day out of your itinerary to complete the tour.

Now, once again, let’s begin!

First, let’s start our free walking tour of Seattle at Pier 57.

Home of the Seattle Great Wheel and Miner’s Landing , Pier 57 is the perfect place to start our walking tour. Filled with unique retails shops, stunning ocean views, various family entertainment, and several popular restaurants including The Crab Pot and The Fisherman’s Restaurant, Pier 57 is a vibrant, fun-filled wonderland perfect for those traveling with family and friends.

Ocean view of the Seattle Great Wheel, Seattle skyline, and Miner's Landing Pier 57; stops on my walking tour of Seattle

Here are the three best things to do at Pier 57 in Seattle:

  • The Seattle Great Wheel : Offering panoramic views overlooking Elliot Bay, the Seattle Great Wheel is a relatively new yet iconic Seattle landmark. Adult tickets cost $15, and it’s typically open from 11 am to 10 pm.
  • Miner’s Landing Pier 57 : Housing the most popular restaurants in addition to Wings Over Washington, Salish Sea Tours, and the Carousel, Miner’s Landing is filled with entertainment (perfect for kids!).
  • Seattle Aquarium : For those interested in the diverse sea life of the Puget Sound, the Seattle Aquarium is the best educational resource . Adult tickets cost anywhere from $24.95 to $34.95 (depending on the day you’re visiting), and the aquarium is open from 9:30 am to 6 pm.

A clown fish at the Seattle Aquarium, near some sea anemone and two other clown fish - a possible stop on your Seattle walking tour

  • Pier 57 Address : 1301 Alaskan Way, Seattle, WA 98101, United States

Next, walk along the waterfront to Pier 62. The first completed section of Waterfront Park, Pier 62 offers breathtaking views of the Puget Sound, as well as some delightful art installations and a floating dock. Admire the incredible ocean scenery before heading to our next stop: Pike Place!

  • Address : 1951 Alaskan Way, Seattle, WA 98101, United States
  • Time to Get Here : It’ll take 5 minutes to walk from Miner’s Landing Pier 57 to Pier 62.
  • Hours : 6 am to 10 pm, open daily.

The Perfect 7-Day Canadian Rockies Road Trip: How to Drive from Calgary to Vancouver

Planning to visit the Canadian Rockies? If so, check out my 7-day Canadian Rockies road trip itinerary!

Pike Place Market

Next, it’s time to explore Pike Place Market. One of the most popular Seattle tourist attractions (and an essential stop on all walking tours of Seattle), Pike Place Public Market is my absolute favorite district in Seattle.

The "Public Market Center" sign at Pike Place Farmer's Market, the best stop on the walking tour of Seattle!

Historic and vibrant, Pike Place is filled with life. First opened in 1907, Pike Place remains one of the oldest farmer’s markets in the USA . From comic book stores, antique dealers, fresh fish and produce, artisan crafts, and more, Pike Place Market offers a plethora of goods.

While visiting Pike Place, don’t forget to check out these key sights:

  • The Gum Wall : While I personally find it a bit gross, Seattle’s Gum Wall is a prominent local landmark worth checking out. On the side of the Post Alley’s Market Theater, it’s one of the most popular Seattle photo spots!

A section of the Gum Wall at Pike Place Farmer's Market in Seattle, with small bits of the brick wall visible under several colorful gum pieces

  • Rachel the Pig : Located under the iconic red Public Market Center sign, Rachel the Piggy Bank is a bronze sculpture based on the 1985 Island County Fair prize-winning 770-pound pig. Here, you can take some photos and donate some coins to help support Pike Place Market.
  • The Original Starbucks : While the Starbucks located in Pike Place Market is commonly referred to as the Original Starbucks, it is actually the second store that opened. Nevertheless, as the first Starbucks no longer exists, the Starbucks located in Pike Place is the closest we can get to the original. Drop by for some souvenirs and great photo ops!
  • Beecher’s Handmade Cheese : While I’m not a huge cheese enthusiast, I still adored having some of Beecher’s macaroni and cheese. Stop by to try some handmade artisan cheese!

A crowd of people huddled around a fresh fish stand as a fisherman throws fish onto the display of ice at Pike Place Public Market in Seattle

With so many sights to see in Pike Place Market, don’t rush this part of our walking tour of Seattle. Take your time and explore the shops and restaurants, before heading to our next stop!

  • Address : 85 Pike St, Seattle, WA 98101, United States
  • Time to Get Here : It’ll take 7 minutes to walk from Pier 62 to the Pike Place Public Market.
  • Hours : Most businesses are open from 9 am to 5 pm.

Victor Steinbrueck Park

Next, walk from Pike Place Market to Victor Steinbrueck Park. A small but charming park offering pleasant ocean views, it is worth visiting en route to our next destination. However, there are occasionally some sketchy characters hanging around, so be aware and stay safe!

  • Address : 2001 Western Ave, Seattle, WA 98121, United States
  • Time to Get Here : It’ll take 3 minutes to walk from Pike Place to Victor Steinbrueck Park.

Olympic Sculpture Park

From Victor Steinbrueck Park, walk for 14 minutes to Olympic Sculpture Park. Spanning nine acres and associated with the Seattle Art Museum, this award-winning park is a great place to relax, offering clean amenities, enchanting views, and interesting sculptures. And with no entrance fee, it is one of the best cheap things to do in Seattle.

Seattle Center

Finally, the last stop on our walking tour of Seattle is Seattle Center, which includes four key museums and sites: the Seattle Space Needle, Chihuly Garden and Glass, the Museum of Pop Culture, and the Pacific Science Center.

While this free walking tour of Seattle is officially over, you can easily spend hours exploring the museums around Seattle Center, especially since they all offer something different and unique. So, make sure you have enough time!

  • Address : 305 Harrison St, Seattle, WA 98109, United States

The Space Needle

A view of the Seattle Space Needle from down below in the Seattle Center on a sunny day, an essential stop on a Seattle day trip

One of the most popular and exalted tourist attractions in Seattle, the Space Needle was built for the 1962 World’s Fair and stands at 605 feet (184 m) tall. While tickets aren’t cheap, there’s no better place to admire the breathtaking panoramic views of Seattle!

  • Address : 400 Broad St, Seattle, WA 98109, United States
  • Cost : General admission tickets for adults costs $35 (but you can buy a combined ticket with Chihuly Garden and Glass for $57!).

  • Website : https://www.spaceneedle.com/

Chihuly Garden and Glass

A mainly yellow glass art sculpture in the outside portion of the Chihuly Garden and Glass, my favorite spot on the Seattle free walking tour

One of the coolest art galleries I’ve ever visited, the Chihuly Garden and Glass Museum showcases the fantastic glass blowing sculptures and art pieces of Dale Chihuly, a celebrated artist from Tacoma, Washington.

With eight galleries, three Drawing Walls, and the Glasshouse and Garden offering fabulous views of the Seattle Space Needle, you won’t be bored at Chihuly Garden and Glass!

  • Cost : General admission tickets for adults cost $32 (but you can buy a combined ticket with the Space Needle for $57!).
  • Hours : 9 am to 6 pm from Sunday to Thursday, and 9 am to 7 pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
  • Website : https://www.chihulygardenandglass.com/

The Museum of Pop Culture

An art display of guitars and other string instruments hanging upside down at the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle, Washington

If you’re a music or film enthusiast, you have to visit the Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) on your Seattle free walking tour. A nonprofit museum focused on contemporary popular culture, they offer exhibits on the Seattle Sound (with a focus on Nirvana and Pearl Jam), science fiction, and horror films.

The Best Time to Visit Seattle

To avoid Seattle’s infamous rain, one of the best times to visit Seattle is in the summer, from June to August. With average high temperatures ranging from 71°F to 79°F (22°C-26°C), the weather is warm and sunny.

However, as this is Seattle’s high season, the crowds are consequently bigger and accommodations tend to cost more (so it’s not the best time for budget travelers ).

Large crowds in front of the Public Market Center sign at Pike Place in July, one of the best times to visit Seattle

In my opinion, the best time to visit Seattle is in the shoulder season (spring and fall), with either September or October being the best month to visit Seattle. It’s also a great time to go on some walking tours in Seattle, as the weather isn’t too hot!

And That’s It for our Walking Tour of Seattle!

I hope you enjoyed reading this article, and I hope you’ll love this walking tour of Seattle. Remember, as this is a self-guided walking tour , you have the final say in where you go and what you do. Best of luck, and happy travels.

How to get your 10 thousand steps on Venice Beach

James March

Jun 1, 2024 • 6 min read

Venice Beach, Los Angeles, USA- February 23, 2014: Tourists and locals along the famous Venice Beach promenade.

The best way to explore Venice Beach and its eclectic boardwalk is on foot © Getty Images

In our 10K steps series, we've asked writers for the best places to get in your steps while enjoying city sights, favorite routes and some secret detours. In this one James March takes us around the colorful and chaotic streets and boulevards of Venice Beach.

Los Angeles’ coast stretches 75 miles, but little of that sun-kissed shore is as iconic, colorful or strange as Venice Beach .

Flanked by Santa Monica to the north and Marina Del Ray to the south, Venice’s waterfront is one of the most eclectic and iconoclastic public spaces in California and has been officially part of LA since 1926. But there’s far more to Venice than just its chaotic boardwalk . From languid canals to sleek skateparks, a wander around this bizarre corner of LA is an assault on the senses like no other and all are welcome in Venice’s potpourri of hippies, misfits, performers, artists and beatniks.

The best way to soak it all in is via a looped walk, so here’s how to follow my favorite route.

Where to start: The Venice Sign

You’ll see the famous Venice Sign again later this evening (in a much brighter fashion), but it’s also a good starting point for our walk. Industrial-chic breakfast spot Eggslut is around the corner if you need a bit of pre-walk fuel with one of their (unsurprisingly) egg-heavy sandwiches. Otherwise, head east on Pacific Avenue before turning north on S Venice Blvd and joining the Venice Canals towpath.

Meander the Venice Canals

Comfortably the most peaceful corner of Venice, these saltbush-fringed canals look nothing like the rest of the neighborhood. Or LA, for that matter. With arcing white bridges, a soft color palette, swaying palms and handsome water reflections, the canals are wonderfully photogenic and don’t be surprised if you feel a pang of jealousy toward those living here.

Each waterside house is different, with the big-windowed Scandi-style modernist apartments the most seductive (in this writer’s opinion). There’s little wind here too, compared to the beach, which only adds to the joyous serenity. Watch for cormorants, herons and other birdlife splashing down as you stroll.

Exit the canals and stroll north on S Venice Blvd. Walk for around 10 minutes, past the Abbot Kinney Memorial Branch Library and turn left on Abbot Kinney Blvd. Abbot Kinney himself was the 19th-century founder of the canals (he successfully changed the name of this area from Ocean Park to Venice in 1911, due to his fascination with the Italian lagoon city) and now this popular street is named after him.

Rainbow gay flag crosswalk in Abbot Kinney Boulevard, Venice, Los Angeles

Stop for quality coffee on Abbot Kinney

Affluent Abbot Kinney Blvd perhaps more closely resembles other LA neighborhoods du jour like Silverlake or Brentwood, though there are some nods to its coastal location, like the pseudo wooden beach shack hosting a Ray-Ban outlet (check out turquoise Goodr cabin further down the street for more affordable shades). Speaking of shops, there are plenty of ways to empty your wallet here, from overpriced smoothies to myriad retro clothing stores.

But this sophisticated stroll is also splashed with cool murals and some excellent restaurants and coffee stops, with the airy Intelligentsia the pick of the bunch. Natural light pours down on its wood-paneled central station as organic blends are poured to the sound of bouncy jazz beats (though prepare for the occasional patience-testing line).

Reasonably-priced tacos can be grabbed at family-owned Tacos Por Favor on the corner of Electric Avenue and Hampton Drive, otherwise continue north along Hampton and past the iconic Golds Gym (Arnold Schwarzenegger still pumps iron there from time to time allegedly, though you’ll need to be up at the crack of dawn to catch him). Make a zig-zagging path to Navy St, before eventually emerging onto the northern end of the Venice boardwalk.

Hit the boardwalk

Cannabis smoke drifts, drums thump, neon bikes glimmer, handheld stereos blast, low-flying helicopters hum, people shout, others sing and hot dog stands hiss. Your senses aren’t so much assaulted in Venice’s epicenter as bludgeoned. The boardwalk is kitschy and trashy but always compelling.

With the sun a little stronger and everyone feeling a little looser, mid-afternoon is the best time to experience the boisterous boardwalk where people watching never felt so exhilarating. Duck into Small World Books for a slice of cerebral calm, and only use the beach’s public restrooms if it's really necessary.

Make the leisurely walk south at your own pace and stop at any vendor that catches your eye (there are over 200 to choose from). People here are always willing to chat and chances are you’ll meet some curiously dressed characters who may or may not tell you their life story. Sidewalk Cafe is a breezy spot for a cold afternoon beer and it’s also adjacent to the skate park, which is our next port of call.

Skateboarder skateboarding in Venice Beach skate park Los Angeles, California

Admire some serious skating skills

When LA’s soft late-afternoon light hits Venice’s sunken skatepark a sublime scene forms, with talented local skaters turned to gliding silhouettes fringed by tall skinny palms. The vibes are always good, with tourists and friends watching and applauding the flicks and tricks on show.

The sound of the nearby waves breaking is amplified here, and the genial encouragement alongside the funky beats from the roller skating dance plaza behind makes the atmosphere fun, especially when there’s back-and-forth banter between skaters and their friends behind the rails.

It’s not far from LA’s lapping shores here, so maybe go for a quick paddle in the Pacific while you have the chance. Head back down to the boardwalk and stop by at the famous Muscle Beach where you might catch an adonis or two working on their bench press.

Arnold, the original Incredible Hulk Lou Ferrigno and many more have trained here during bodybuilding’s 1970s golden era. Though these days it's the relentless clack of couples playing paddle tennis from the courts behind that’s more popular. Stroll past the restaurants and bars of Windward Avenue and take a right at the Venice Sign where you’ll head inside the Hotel Erwin .

A view of the sunset from the rooftop of the Hotel Erwin, Venice Beach, LA

Soak in sunset rooftop views

Surprisingly, there’s only one place in Venice with a rooftop patio, and this is it. Lined by blood orange parasols, the Hotel Erwin’s 7th-floor deck is huge and stretches the entire length of the hotel. And on a clear day the views are genuinely panoramic, with downtown’s hazy skyscrapers visible and the high craggy Malibu Hills stretching east to Hollywood and beyond.

If you time this walk right, you’ll catch a golden sunset settling over the lights of Santa Monica Pier . Many of the sofas will be reserved, but the bar and the high tables on the left-hand side are available to all comers.

You can order food at the Erwin or take the elevator back down to Windward Avenue below for more gastro options (the smoky mezcal served at the Del Monte Speakeasy inside Townhouse is a favorite of mine). But since you’re here and night has fallen, don’t forget to cross over Pacific Avenue and take a photo of the Venice Sign now that it’s all lit up and strung out in its green, white and red glory.

Why walk japan.

Walk Japan provides authentic and enjoyable tours to discover Japan, its people, society and culture. Beginning in 1992 with our innovative and best-selling Nakasendo Way tour, we were the first to successfully introduce the real Japan, geographically and culturally, that often remains inaccessible for most visitors to the country. Since then, Walk Japan has created more original tours throughout Japan and been widely recognised for its work, including selection by National Geographic as one of the 200 Best Adventure Travel Companies on Earth.

5-Star Walking Tours in Oxford

Lucy was a great tour guide and told us very funny stories along with some really interesting facts. I felt very safe as everyone was social distanced and the tour guide had a visor on ensuring we had a safe experience. I would highly recommend this tour.

Firstly a big thank you to Lucy as she was superb. Her tour was very informative and the 2 hours just flew by. We learnt things about Oxford that only a qualified guide would know. Definitely give this a go.

Really interesting way to get round the beautiful city of Oxford. The guide was great and it all felt very safe. Would definitely consider doing their other tours if I return back to oxford in the future.

I did this tour with my dad last November and even though it was pouring rain, we both remember the experience very positively. Our guide was very knowledgeable and found a great mix between being informative and entertaining.

The 6 Most Comfortable Walking Sandals, According To Outdoor Tour Guides

These supportive shoes for men and women can withstand water, rough terrain, and long days spent on your feet.

Tessa Flores

HuffPost Staff

Unless otherwise specified, all sizes in this post are listed in women's.

Sandals are an essential shoe for many, but not always the most comfortable option in your footwear lineup. Whether it be a lack of insole support, awkward straps that rub, or a slippery outer-sole that’s not to be trusted, there can be plenty of reasons you don’t reach for sandals every day.

A pair of leather Merrell slip-ons, an all-terrain Teva sandal and minimalist T-straps by Bedrock Sandals

Outdoor tour guides, however, often have to rely on sandals to get them through their work day as they traverse a variety of terrains in any number of weather conditions and for long periods of time. Because of this, I was curious to learn the sandals and footwear brands they trust to provide them with this level of comfort.

Adventure chaperones from Hawaii and beyond helped create the upcoming selection of comfy walkable sandals, ideal for all types of outings. Find general sandal tips, waterproof clogs, all-terrain Tevas that you can even wear hiking, and more.

1. an adjustable strap sandal with arch support.

The burnt umber sandal

Marlo Colletto is a tour guide and the marketing coordinator for Wildland Trekking , an expert-led hiking and trekking company that offers guided excursions all over the world.  According to her, there are three distinct sandal brands that outdoor professionals ascribe to, depending on people's specific needs and preferences. One of which is Chaco, a footwear brand created by an outdoor rafting guide in Colorado. Colletto said that if you're looking for a sturdy hard-soled sandal with a lot of arch support, Chaco's offerings might be the comfortable sandal for you. She suggests the brand's Z line because they're durable and supportive, even though they're not the most lightweight option in our lineup. These adjustable strap sandals boast a podiatrist-approved footbed and a lug-sole outer that offers no-slip traction.

Get them from Chaco in women's for $69.99+  (originally $105; available in sizes 5–12 and 16 styles) or in men's for $74.99+ (originally $105; available in sizes 7–15 and nine styles).

2. A pair of women's closed-toe all-terrain sandals

The granite green sandals

Delphine Berbigier is the owner and operator of Unique Maui Tours  and Explore Maui Nature , two sustainable tourism companies that offer private and customized nature tours in Maui.  One of her favorite pairs of outdoor sandals are these ones from Keen, which have a multi-directional lug pattern on the sole for all-terrain traction and a closed-toe design, something that Berbigier said is important to consider. The shoes feature a "Metatomical" molded footbed, a brand-exclusive insole that is anatomically designed to provide better support.

Get them from Amazon for $72+ (available in sizes 5–12 and 17 styles) or from Zappos for $115  (available in sizes 5–12 and seven styles).

3. A rugged Teva sandal

The orange, pink and gray sandal

"If you want a slightly lower profile sandal with a more flexible sole that still offers good durability, consider the Teva Hurricane XLT line," Colletto said, pointing to their mid-weight design and good traction.

These versatile sandals have lightweight cushioning and a stabilizing foam footbed, suitable for anything from light hikes to camping trips.

Get them from Teva for $75 (available in women's sizes 5–14 and 18 styles or in men's sizes 6–16 and 18 styles).

4. A water-ready traction sandal

The lunar rock sandal

Delphine said that Teva was also among one of her favorite sandal brands. She also prefers having shoes with good traction and are made with fast-drying materials, especially if you plan on wearing your sandals in or around water. Based on her recommendations we chose Teva's Hydratek sandal, which is made using a quick-drying webbing material, padded straps, and a heavily textured top sole to avoid feet from slipping in sliding in the shoe. The outer-sole is equally resistant to water thanks to a unique rubber construction designed to provide grip on wet surfaces.

Get them from Teva in women's for $85  (available in sizes 5–11 and four styles) or from REI in men's for $84.95 (available in sizes 8–14 and four styles).

5. A minimilast footbed T-strap sandal

The green and black sandal

The Cairn Evo sandals by Bedrock are one of the latest designs from what the brand calls their "freedom footwear" line.  "If weight is your main concern, true hikers going ultralight swear by Bedrock brand sandals," Colletto said of these feather-light T-strap sandals, which feature a minimalist foam footbed and Vibram outer-soles that claim to offer reliable traction across a variety of terrain and outdoor conditions.

Get them from Bedrock Sandals for $115 (available in women's sizes 6–15 and nine styles or in men's sizes 5–14 and nine styles).

6. A classic Crocs clog

The black Crocs clog

While they're not technically a sandal, these came highly recommended by Colletto. "Comfortable lightweight slip-ons like Crocs, are included on the recommended equipment lists for most of our trips," Colletto said. Although Crocs are polarizing shoes, these waterproof clogs have a longstanding reputation for comfort and versatility. They are incredibly lightweight, flexible, and fast-drying and have a ribbed, contoured footbed for moderate support. You can find these in a near endless selection of colors.

Get them from Amazon for $44.99+  (available in unisex sizes 4–19 and a wide variety of styles).
