Race preview

The herculean GC battle Tour de France between leader Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) and second-placed Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) ended on stage 16 and 17 with the Dane first delivering a stunning blow in the time trial before a knockout punch on the Col de la Loze.

Vingegaard has a comfortable lead in the Tour de France GC standings of 7:29 on Pogačar, winner of stage 20 , and 10:56 on the Slovenian's teammate Adam Yates.

The penultimate stage delivered the final skirmish for riders fighting to move up in the top 10 of the general classification. Simon Yates  (Jayco-AlUla) moved up to fourth overall while Carlos Rodríguez (Ineos Grenadiers) lost one spot and is now in fifth place.  Meanwhile, Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) sealed the KOM classification.

All eyes now turn to the sprinters whose biggest day of the year is the finish on the Champs Elysées in Paris.

The largely-ceremonial final stage will explode into life in the circuits as the sun sets over Paris.

Can anyone beat Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) who has already won four stages, and claimed the points jersey?

Sprinters such Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco-AlUla), Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty), Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) and Sam Welsford (dsm-firmenich) will try to take advantage of tired legs to claim their first stage win of this year's Tour.

The Tour de France pedals onto TV every July—showcasing the world’s greatest road cyclists. As in recent seasons, NBC Sports will broadcast this year’s event across NBC , USA Network, and Peacock .

Peacock is our favorite service for watching the race because it carries every stage live and on demand. It’s also the streaming home of the Tour de France Femmes and Vuelta a España.

Keep scrolling for a closer look at watching the Tour de France in 2023—including the complete schedule with channel listings.

What channel shows the Tour de France?

You can watch the Tour de France on NBC , USA Network, and Peacock . You’ll get the most live coverage from Peacock, which streams every stage and the daily Tour de France Pre-Race Show . USA Network shows a mix of live and encore coverage, while NBC carries select portions of the race—primarily an encore of the final stage in Paris.

Pro tip: To heighten your Tour de France viewing experience, download the official Tour de France mobile app on your Android or iOS device. The app comes with course maps, real-time stats, and live commentary.

2023 Tour de France schedule

This year’s Tour de France begins on July 1 in Spain before crossing into France on the third day. As usual, the 21-day route features a solid mix of flat to mountainous terrain. Two rest days break up the action before racers make their way to the Avenue des Champs-Élysées in Paris on July 23.

Data effective as of post date. Race times include Peacock’s live Tour de France Pre-Race Show coverage.

2023 Tour de France Femmes schedule

Just as the men’s tour wraps up in Paris, the Tour de France Femmes takes off from Clermont-Ferrand. This is the second edition of the women’s race and features an eight-day route ending with an individual time trial in Pau.

Data effective as of post date.

Best TV plans for watching the Tour de France

A Peacock subscription is the best way to watch the Tour de France. Starting at $4.99 a month, the streaming service provides live and on-demand access to every stage of the men’s and women’s races. You’ll also get daily pre- and post-race studio coverage during the men’s competition, plus race highlights and rider interviews.

If you’re only interested in the Tour de France, you can cancel your subscription after the final stage. Otherwise, Peacock’s cycling coverage doesn’t stop there. The service also hosts the Liège–Bastogne–Liège, Critérium du Dauphiné, Vuelta a España, and Paris Tours. It’s also home to the Summer Olympics , which features road race and track cycling events every four years.

How to watch the Tour de France for free

*CableTV.com utilizes paid Amazon links. Amazon.com Price; $47.99 (as of 5/3/23 11:30 a.m. CT). Read full disclaimer .

The most convenient way to watch the Tour de France for free is by using an over-the-air (OTA) antenna to pick up your local NBC station. Unfortunately, NBC doesn’t show a lot of race coverage—mostly encore presentations of early and late stages. But it never hurts having an antenna in your TV setup.

If you don’t have an antenna, most cost between $20.00 and $60.00. We recommend the Mohu Leaf 50 for its 60-mile range and slim design. But you’ll want to verify the distance of your nearest NBC station by entering your zip code into the Federal Communications Commission’s Reception Map Tool . That’ll help determine if you need a more robust antenna, which we feature on our Best OTA Antennas page.

Pro tip: To make up for every stage NBC doesn’t air, you can stream free race recaps on NBC Sports’ YouTube channel .

The 110th Tour de France will stream on Peacock and air on NBC and USA Network throughout July 2023. Peacock offers the best way to watch Le Tour because it streams every stage from beginning to end. It also carries the entire women’s race, which begins the same day as the men’s competition ends.

If you’re a cycling fan without access to fast and reliable internet, most cable and satellite TV services have NBC and USA Network. Those channels don’t show as much Tour de France coverage as Peacock, but you’ll still see the most vital moments of the race.

How to watch the Tour de France FAQ

Can you watch the tour de france on nbc.

Yes, some Tour de France coverage airs on NBC. But you’ll want a Peacock Premium subscription to watch every stage from start to finish.

Is every cycling Grand Tour race on NBC?

No, not every race in the Grand Tour of Cycling airs on NBC. While NBC Sports channels and platforms televise the Tour de France and Vuelta a España, the Giro d’Italia streams on Max’s  B/R Sports Add-On .

What cycling events are on Peacock?

Popular cycling events featured on Peacock include the Tour de France, Vuelta a España , and Olympic cycling . Other major UCI World Tour races like the Giro d’Italia, Milan–San Remo, and Tour of Flanders stream on services like FloBikes and Max’s B/R Sports Add-On .

How to watch Tour de France live stream — 2023 stages and schedule

The world’s greatest cycle race is underway!

Tadej Pogacar racing Jonas Vinegaard up a hill

Watch Tour de France: live streams

Watch tour de france 2023: preview.

This year’s Tour de France is less ‘La Grande Boucle’ (The Big Loop) and more a giant belt around the country’s waist. Riding west to east the ‘Grand Depart’ took place outside France for the second year in a row across the border in the Basque Country in northern Spain. Make sure you know how to watch a Tour de France free live stream from anywhere.

From here the race is headed west through the Pyrenees across legendary mountains such as the Col du Soudet and the mighty Col du Tourmalet before heading to the Massif Central and a return to the iconic Puy de Dome. Not climbed since 1988 this dormant volcano will provide a spectacular arena for the culmination of stage 9 and the end of the long first week.

Continuing west to The Jura mountains there is a summit finish on top of the Grand Colombier and then two days later another summit finish in the Alps at Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc. With just one time trial on the route: a 22km mainly uphill test on stage 16. This is without doubt a race for the climbers whose battles will finish in the forested peaks of The Vosges on the slopes of the evil Col du Platzerwasel.

As for the contenders, the two main protagonists, Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) and Jonas Vinegaard (Jumbo-Visma) are on paper so far ahead of anyone else that the rest appear to be just support actors.

Vinegaard’s dominant display at the recent Critérium du Dauphiné, where he won at a canter, suggests he is in the same sparkling form that saw him take last year’s race but the condition of his great rival Pogačar is not so certain.

The Slovenian he hasn’t raced since he crashed in Liège-Bastogne-Liège on April 23, breaking his wrist. Until that point pretty much all he had to do was to start a race to win it. His return of 12 victories from 19 starts is remarkable in the modern age but having not raced for so long will he be back at his very best?

The final stage of the Tour is half procession and half eyeballs out racing up and down the cobbles of the Champs Elysée. What starts with photo opportunities and glasses of champagne ends with the most highly prized sprint stage in front of the thousands that line the route. Hitting the famous boulevard the peloton as is tradition was all together but not for long as the irrepressible Tadej Pogacar decided to shake things up and go out on the attack.

Could he defy the might of the peloton and take the unlikeliest of victories? Also no, and he wasn’t the last to try and audacious attack before everything came back to gather for a final mass gallop to the line. All eyes were on Jasper Phillipsen, this year’s sprint king but just as it looked like he had got it, across surged Jordi Meeus (Bora-Hansgrohe) to take his first ever stage win, and what a stage to do it on.

Yellow jersey wearer Jonas Vingegaard crossed the line a few seconds later flanked by his whole team, his second victory in two years confirmed, which in the end was a very comfortable one and looks likely to be the foundation of a period of total dominance.

In the run up to the start of the race we'll be Take a more detailed look at the 2023 Tour de France teams , their key riders and objectives for the three weeks at the bottom of the page.

Tour de France teams and riders 2023

UAE Team Emirates

Cycling’s Galacticos. A team of leaders and winners all here to ride in service of one rider, the world’s current best, Tadej Pogacar. Beaten into second place last year after he cracked on the Col de Granon, ‘Pog’ will be out for revenge this year and it would take a brave man to bet against him taking his third title.

RIDERS: Felix GROßSCHARTNER, Vegard Stake LAENGEN, Mikkel BJERG, Matteo TRENTIN, Tadej POGAČAR, Adam YATES, Marc SOLER and Rafał MAJKA

Israel–Premier Tech

NO CHRIS FROOME! That was the shock headline, but let’s be honest ONLY Chris Froome thought he was going to be on the start line. Micheal Woods and Dylan Teuns are the riders most likely to deliver but they will need the rub of the green to pull off a stage win, but dreams do come true at the Tour.

RIDERS: Michael WOODS, Nick SCHULTZ, Corbin STRONG, Krists NEILANDS, Hugo HOULE, Guillaume BOIVIN, Simon CLARKE and Dylan TEUNS.

Lotto–Dstny

Once upon a time Lotto–Dstny could rely upon Victor Campenaerts to win from a solo break or Caleb Ewan to take a sprint stage but no longer. Although these scenarios are both still a possibility they will more likely be looking to younger members of their team to make it into a break and bring home a win for the Belgian team.

RIDERS: Jacopo GUARNIERI, Frederik FRISON, Pascal EENKHOORN, Jasper DE BUYST, Victor CAMPENAERTS, Florian VERMEERSCH, Caleb EWAN, Maxim VAN GILS

Team TotalEnergies

Gone are the days when Peter Sagan just had to turn up to take the green points jersey such was his dominance, but even the brightest stars fade and in his last Tour it’s unfortunate that he will be little more than a footnote. Unless, that is there is one final bit of magic left in those legs and oh how the cycling fans would love to see that.

RIDERS: Mathieu BURGAUDEAU, Edvald BOASSON HAGEN, Steff CRAS, Valentin FERRON, Pierre LATOUR, Daniel OSS, Peter SAGAN and Anthony TURGIS.

Uno-X Pro Cycling Team

Made up entirely of Danes and Norwegians this is the first Tour de France for Uno-X and led by their aging talisman the great Alexander Kristoff they will be keen to leave a mark on it. Young stars Søren Wærenskjold and Torstein Træen will also be keen to show that the Norwegian team are here on merit and justify their selection.

RIDERS: Jonas ABRAHAMSEN, Jonas GREGAARD, Anthon CHARMIG, Søren WÆRENSKJOLD, Torstein TRÆEN, Alexander KRISTOFF, Rasmus TILLER and Tobias Halland JOHANNESSEN.

Alpecin–Deceuninck

In the recent Netflix Tour de France documentary series Jasper Philipsen was referred to as Alpecin–Deceuninck’s ‘Plan B’. This is no longer the case, he is well and truly ‘Plan A’ now, of course along with the ‘other Plan A’, the sensational Mathieu Van der Poel. A once in a generation rider who on his day can beat anyone at anything.

RIDERS: Mathieu VAN DER POEL, Jasper PHILIPSEN, Jonas RICKAERT, Silvan DILLIER, Ramon SINKELDAM, Quinten HERMANS, Søren KRAGH ANDERSEN, Michael GOGL.

EF Education–EasyPost

EF Education–EasyPost have a team full of winners, each one capable of getting in a break and taking a stage it’s just deciding who will get the chance each day. I’m sure Rigoberto URÁN and Richard CARAPAZ have aspirations of a high finish in Paris but I suspect reality will bite when the manure hits the fan and they will get dropped like a hot stone.

RIDERS: Alberto BETTIOL, Andrey AMADOR, Esteban CHAVES, Richard CARAPAZ, James SHAW, Magnus CORT, Rigoberto URÁN and Neilson POWLESS

Groupama–FDJ

This Tour is going to be Thibaut Pinot’s swan song, the darling of the French media came agonisingly close to winning the Tour but never delivered the victory the nation craves. He is on paper riding to support team leader David Gaudu but with a question mark the size of Paris hanging over the young French rider’s form maybe Pinot will be let off the leash for one last chance of glory before retirement.

RIDERS: Quentin PACHER, Olivier LE GAC, Lars VAN DEN BERG, Stefan KÜNG, Kevin GENIETS, Thibaut PINOT, David GAUDU and Valentin MADOUAS.

Ineos Grenadiers

With uncertaintly over whether Egan Bernal will ever get back to his best after his near fatal crash in 2022 team Ineos turn up to the Tour not looking at the overall victory for probably the first time in 10 years. The priority will be hunting stages, unless that is the talented Tom Pidcock can get into the mix because we really do not yet know the limits of his abilities.

RIDERS: BERNAL Egan, Ben TURNER, Omar FRAILE, Daniel Felipe MARTÍNEZ, Thomas PIDCOCK, Michał KWIATKOWSKI, Carlos RODRÍGUEZ and Jonathan CASTROVIEJO

Intermarché–Circus–Wanty

All eyes are on their star rider Biniam GIRMAY to see if he can deliver the first African stage win. He has already proved himself a champion but will have his work cut out in sprints to beat the other feast men. WIth the backing of a whole continent though this could inspire him to make history in this year’s event.

RIDERS: Dion SMITH, Biniam GIRMAY, Louis MEINTJES, Mike TEUNISSEN, Adrien PETIT, Georg ZIMMERMANN, Rui COSTA and Lilian CALMEJANE.

Lidl - Trek

The young Mattias Skjelmose could be in the hunt for the third step on the podium if he still has the form he shown at the Tour de Suisse this but it’s likely Lidl - Trek will find the most success hunting stages. Led by their former world champion Mads Pedersen they also have a very good hand of cards to play whether it be Skjelmose or Ciccone in the hight mountains or Pedersen, Simmons and Stuyven on tough lumpy stages.

RIDERS: Tony GALLOPIN, Giulio CICCONE, Quinn SIMMONS, Mattias SKJELMOSE, Juan Pedro LÓPEZ, Alex KIRSCH, Jasper STUYVEN and Mads PEDERSEN

Movistar Team

Movistar will be hoping Enric Mas is at his very best as he will need to be if he wants to try and challenge Pogacar and Vingegaard. He did show signs of very good form earlier in the year but has since gone off the boil a bit.

RIDERS: Antonio PEDRERO, Gregor MÜHLBERGER, Alex ARANBURU, Gorka IZAGIRRE, Matteo JORGENSON, Nelson OLIVEIRA, Ruben GUERREIRO and Enric MAS.

Soudal–Quick-Step

With Remco Evenepole rested, Soudal–Quick-Step don’t have a rider for the general classification so their main focus will be to deliver Fabio Jakobsen to the front on sprint days and hope the mercurial Julian Alaphilippe can re-find the form that once made him the most exciting rider on the planet.

RIDERS: Andrea BAGIOLI, Fabio JAKOBSEN, Julian ALAPHILIPPE, Rémi CAVAGNA, Yves LAMPAERT, Mauri VANSEVENANT, Florian SÉNÉCHAL and Michael MØRKØV.

Team Bahrain Victorious

With newly crowned British champion Fred Wright and the ever-aggressive Matej Mohoric leading their hunt for stages, and Jack Haig aiming to get in the mix for the overall, Bahrain Victorious have many cards to play.

RIDERS: Jack HAIG, Phil BAUHAUS, Nikias ARNDT, Wout POELS, Pello BILBAO, Matej MOHORIČ, Mikel LANDA and Fred WRIGHT.

Team DSM–Firmenich

Once again the French will be dreaming of Romain Bardet stood on the top step of the podium in Paris but, alas, I’m afraid it’s very unlikely this will happen. Expect him to shine in the mountain stages and if he is VERY lucky he could get a win but the best he can really hope for is a top 10 finish.

RIDERS: Chris HAMILTON, Alex EDMONDSON, Kevin VERMAERKE, John DEGENKOLB, Sam WELSFORD, Matthew DINHAM, Romain BARDET and Nils EEKHOFF.

Team Jayco–AlUla

Team Jayco–AlUla take a two pronged attack to the Tour with Dylan Groenewegen favorite for the sprint stages and Simon Yates hoping to be in the mix for a very high finish in Paris.

RIDERS: Christopher JUUL-JENSEN, Elmar REINDERS, Chris HARPER, Luke DURBRIDGE, Lawson CRADDOCK, Dylan GROENEWEGEN, Simon YATES and Luka MEZGEC.

Team Jumbo–Visma

Jumbo Visma have an embarrassment of riches, a team stacked with world class winners, all of whom are there with the sole aim of ensuring Jonas Vingegaard takes his second win after last year's success. Their main problem, like last year, will be keeping their talent in check and ensuring they play the team game and don’t go rogue.

RIDERS: Wilco KELDERMAN, Christophe LAPORTE, Tiesj BENOOT, Wout VAN AERT, Dylan VAN BAARLE, Nathan VAN HOOYDONCK, Sepp KUSS and Jonas VINGEGAARD.

AG2R Citroën Team

AG2R will be throwing all their weight behind their star rider, the Australian Ben O’Connor. Fourth in the 2021 Tour de France and third in this year’s Criterium du Dauphine, he will fancy his chances of being in the mix for a very high placed finish.

RIDERS: Ben O’CONNOR, Nans PETERS, Oliver NAESEN, Benoît COSNEFROY, Aurélien PARET-PEINTRE, Felix GALL, Clément BERTHET and Stan DEWULF.

Arkéa–Samsic

Arkéa–Samsic’s best hope of a successful Tour will be somehow getting a win from a breakaway with French favorite Warren Barguil their best hope of delivering this goal.

RIDERS: Laurent PICHON, Simon GUGLIELMI, Jenthe BIERMANS, Warren BARGUIL, Luca MOZZATO, Clément CHAMPOUSSIN, Anthony DELAPLACE and Matis LOUVEL.

Astana Qazaqstan Team

Alexey Luttsenko is Astana’s best hope for the overall classification but even the most optimistic fan won’t really believe he has a chance of victory. The main goal for the team, from a British perspective that is, is for Mark Cavendish to win his prized 35th stage.

RIDERS: Harold TEJADA, Gianni MOSCON, Alexey LUTSENKO, Yevgeniy FEDOROV, Mark CAVENDISH, Cees BOL, David DE LA CRUZ and Luis León SÁNCHEZ.

Bora–Hansgrohe

Jai Hindley, the 2022 Giro d’Italia winner should be well in the mix for a spot on the podium but he is still a way off the level needed to compete for the win. Stranger things have happened though so keep an eye on the young Aussie.

RIDERS: Marco HALLER, Patrick KONRAD, Bob JUNGELS, Jordi MEEUS , Emanuel BUCHMANN, Jai HINDLEY, Danny VAN POPPEL and Nils POLITT.

Much like Arkéa–Samsic, Cofids’ hopes lie in a win from a break with seasoned winners. Ion Izagirre, Guillaume Martin and Simon Geschke lead their charge. Also watch out for their sprinter Bryan Coquard who, on his day, if everything fell into place, could upset the bigger sprint names.

RIDERS: Alexis RENARD, Simon GESCHKE, Axel ZINGLE, Anthony PEREZ, Victor LAFAY, Bryan COQUARD, Ion IZAGIRRE and Guillaume MARTIN.

NBC Sports, Peacock and the Amaury Sport Organisation (A.S.O.) today announced a six-year extension for exclusive U.S. media rights for the Tour de France.

Beginning with the 111 th Tour de France in June 2024, Peacock will become the exclusive home of the Tour de France in the United States through 2029 with live start-to-finish coverage of every stage . Select stages will also simulcast live on NBC throughout the three-week event. Daily coverage on Peacock will include NBC Sports-produced pre- and post-race studio shows, full-stage replays, highlights, stage recaps, rider interviews, and more.

As part of its previous agreement, NBC Sports and Peacock will present full live coverage of 110th Tour de France this summer (July 1-23, 2023). NBC Sports’ full coverage schedule for the 2023 Tour de France will be announced in the coming months.

“We’re excited to reach this long-term agreement with A.S.O. to present the world’s most prestigious cycling event live on Peacock for years to come,” said Jon Miller, President, Acquisitions and Partnerships, NBC Sports. “With the Tour de France and our extensive cycling portfolio, we are proud to continue as the home of cycling in the United States, while continuing to bolster Peacock’s best-in-class slate of live sports programming.”

“We are delighted to be able to extend our long-term partnership with NBCUniversal, which promotes the Tour de France and all the major A.S.O. sporting events to the American public on a cross-platform basis, including women’s cycling such as the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift that NBC Sports has supported since the first edition in July 2022. The combined coverage via Peacock, which will show the entire races from the beginning to the end, and network television, will ensure that everyone has access to the best of world cycling. Super fans won’t miss any of the twists and turns that cycling holds. NBC Sports will remain the home of cycling in the United States for another six years and in 2029 we will celebrate the 29th anniversary of a historic partnership that is proof of America’s sincere love for cycling and the Tour,” declared Yann Le Moenner, CEO of A.S.O.

As part of the agreement, NBC Sports will present many additional A.S.O. events throughout the year, including cycling events such as La Vuelta a España, which is the final Grand Tour event of the year following the Tour de France, La Vuelta Feminina by Carrefour.es, the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, the Spring Classics including the men’s and women’s Paris-Roubaix, Paris-Roubaix Femmes avec Zwift, the Ardennaises Classics (men and women) that are La Fleche Wallonne and Liege-Bastogne-Liege, Criterium du Dauphine, and Paris Tours. Also included are the Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris, the world’s second-largest marathon, and the Dakar Rally , the world’s most challenging off-road endurance race.

Comcast/NBC Sports has served as the U.S. home of the Tour de France since 2001.

The final podium of the 2023 Tour de France on the Champs-Elysées in Paris

The wait is nearly over for the biggest bike race of the year, the Tour de France 2024 . Like us, you'll probably be wanting to tune in and watch, so we've put together a comprehensive guide to exactly how you can watch everything from live coverage to highlights of this iconic Grand Tour.

It should be an exciting battle for overall victory, with four potential winners all vying for the maillot jaune. Reigning champion Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease A Bike), Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step) and Primož Roglič (Bora-Hansgrohe) are the men most likely, although newly-anointed Giro d'Italia champion Pogačar is the only rider to have come through the early season unscathed. The other three have missed training time after tangling with each other in the same crash in Itzulia Basque Country in April.

Vingegaard was the worst affected , and in early June there was still a question mark over whether he would definitely be at the Tour de France.

There are plenty of sprinting opportunities scattered throughout the race. Last year's green jersey Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) will be the man to beat, pushed hard others including Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) and Fabio Jakobsen (dsm-firmenich-PostNL). Many eyes will also be on Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan), who returns for his last Tour de France in the hope of finally beating the all-time 35-stage-win record that he is currently tied on with Eddy Merckx.

The final stage sees the race make way for the Paris Olympic Games and finish outside the capital for the first time in history, with a time trial from Monaco to Nice.

When is the Tour de France?

The Tour de France will begin in Florence on June 29, and finish three weeks later on July 21 in Nice. Individual stages will be broadcast in full on Discovery+ .

When is the Tour de France 2024? How to watch and the latest odds with Tadej Pogacar the bookies' favourite

W ith five weeks to go until the 2024 Tour de France , Tadej Pogacar is the bookies’ favourite to win the yellow jersey — having won the Giro d’Italia emphatically.

The Slovenian is looking to add to his 2020 and 2021 Tour titles, which will be easier if rival Jonas Vingegaard fails to recover from crash injuries sustained in the Itzulia Basque Country tour earlier this year.

Danish rider Vingegaard, the 2022 and 2023 Tour winner, is facing a race against time to be fit and is not on the start list for next week's Critérium du Dauphiné — a warm-up race.

Other yellow jersey contenders Remco Evenepoel and Primož Roglič, who also both crashed on the Basque tour, have recovered to make the Critérium .

It could make for an interesting 111th edition of the race with or without its biggest names when the racing gets under way next month.

Here is all you need to know about the 2024 Tour de France.

When is the Tour de France 2024?

The Tour will begin with a hilly stage from Florence to Rimini in Italy on Saturday, June 29.

From there, riders will race for 21 days and have two rest days, culminating in a time trial in Nice on Sunday, July 21.

What is the route for the Tour?

After the four days in Italy, the Tour will cross the border to Valloire France on Tuesday, July 2 — the first high mountain stage.

It is the first time the race has had its Grand Depart in Italy. In another first, the riders will cross into San Marino on an early stage.

The Tour will finish outside Paris for the first time as the French capital is preparing to host the Olympic Games and the Paralympics this summer.

The final stage in Nice will be a time trial, meaning the general classification order will go down to the last day.

While usually the last day is something of a ceremony before a sprint, in 2024 it will be the second of two long time trials.

The tough route will take in summit finishes in the French Alps, featured earlier than usual, Massif Central and the Pyrenees. Stage nine will also feature 32 kilometres (20 miles) of gravel roads.

The severity of the stages and lack of flat finishes is bad news for sprinters including Britain's Mark Cavendish — who is seeking a record-breaking 35th Tour stage win.

Eight stages identified as ‘flat’ could give sprinters such as Cavendish reasons to hope — but only if they can stay in the race over the mountains and make time cuts.

The Manx rider told the Guardian : “There’s a few [sprint stages] but you’ve got to get to them — that’s the problem.

“It’s so hard. I’m in a bit of shock, actually.”

How can I watch the Tour de France?

ITV 4 and ITV X will be showing the Tour de France live from June 29 to July 21 with highlights shows every evening — usually at 7pm.

In previous years, the shows have been presented by Gary Imlach with input and commentary from David Millar and Ned Boulting.

ITV will also broadcast Critérium du Dauphiné highlights from June 4 to 11.

Who are the bookmakers’ favourites for the 2024 Tour de France?

Bookmakers are in an unusual position and taking bets on a race scenario with and without defending champion Jonas Vingegaard taking part.

Oddschecker does not have the option of betting on the Dane winning the yellow jersey.

However, the odds of other contenders do shorten if he does not make the start line.

The full list of riders will be confirmed nearer the start of the race.

These are the Oddschecker odds as of May 30 .

Tadej Pogacar: Odds to win with Vingegaard in race (4/11) without Vingegaard (1/2)

The Slovenian is in red-hot form and could add to his two yellow jerseys.

Primož Roglič: Both with and without Vingegaard (9/2)

Another Slovenian who has won the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana in the past but never the Tour de France, despite coming second in 2020.

Remco Evenepoel: With and without Vingegaard (10/1)

The Belgian has previously won the Giro and is an all-rounder.

Juan Ayuso: With and without Vingegaard (16/1)

The Spanish youngster is a teammate of Pogacar at UAE Team Emirates and could step up should misfortune strike the Slovenian but is otherwise on domestique duty.

‘we make a winning plan every day:’ coach says vingegaard is pulling out all stops to be ready for the tour de france, danish rider still dealing with effects of dramatic crash in april, with nervousness also a factor..

Jonas Vingegaard suffered a career-threatening crash on April 4, but he is making better than expected progress in his race against time to be ready for the Tour de France in less than one month away.

That’s according to coach Tim Heemskerk , whole told Velo that he lauds the double Tour de France winner for his ability to rapidly improve his fitness levels.

“What impresses me the most is, especially after injury or being sick, how fast these top athletes can improve,” he told Velo this week. “When Jonas follows the training and does all the [right] things, I’ve never seen anything like it. I think it’s part of genetics but it’s also trusting in what you’re doing.

“I think it was two years ago, in one of the altitude camps before Dauphiné, one of the teammates said ‘ah, it’s not fair. This guy trains for a week, and he’s improving so fast.’

“That is that is something that I’ve never seen with any other athlete yet, that he is so able to improve so quickly.”

Vingegaard needs to draw on that attribute if he is to stand a chance of winning a third consecutive Tour. Indeed he’ll need that to even to be there at the start line with a fighting chance.

The Dane is in a race against time to be ready for the Tour, having spent two months trying to recover after serious disruption.

His crash at the Itzulia Basque Country left him suffering with a broken collarbone and shoulder blade, fractured ribs and a punctured lung. And while he has been able to put in good training in Mallorca and is now at altitude at Tignes, it remains to be seen if he can be ready in time for the Tour.

Despite his emphasis of Vingegaard’s ability to rapidly build form, Heemskerk also acknowledges what he has been through.

“I also do realize that he’s dealing now with a situation which is different than just an illness, that it will take energy,” he said. “It’s not like, ‘ah, I don’t feel pain,’ that nothing’s happening in the body. His body is still healing. That takes energy, and it also takes energy away from the [training] adaptation process.

“We give our all, we try to make every day a winning plan. But we don’t we don’t have a lot of time. So every day counts.”

Getting the nerve back again

Tadej Pogačar is on everyone’s radar after his near-10 minute victory in the Giro d’Italia, but Vingegaard is the athlete who proved the stronger in the past two Tours. After taking second in 2021 he returned to vanquish the Slovenian in 2022, cracking him in the mountain, and did so again last year.

And while Pogačar lit up the peloton this season, Vingegaard did likewise in his own race program. He dominated the O Gran Camiño in February, winning three out of four stages, the overall, the points and the mountains classifications, and also pummeled his rivals in Tirreno-Adriatico.

The two seemed set for a huge showdown in the Tour, but everything was thrown into doubt when Vingegaard plus fellow Tour contenders Primož Roglič (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) went off the road on a high speed descent in the Itzulia Basque Country.

Those who know Vingegaard were left horrified by what they saw.

“The crash itself was a very emotional day for everybody in the team, and especially for Jonas and the family,” Heemskerk said, acknowledging the fears of those watching the stage.

“Then you go step by step. You’re waiting for him first to be released from the hospital. And then once you know that will happen in the next few days, you start planning already a little bit.”

However any hopes that Vingegaard could quickly return to normal life were dashed. Heemskerk confirms media suggestions at the time that he was unable to return home.

He told Velo that the punctured lung Vingegaard suffered coupled with rigorous medical rules set by Denmark made taking a flight impossible.

The Tour champion was forced to remain in Spain, and also had to do regular rehab to rebuild strength and flexibility in his affected shoulder.

He and his coach worked closely together throughout this period, with Heemskerk sometimes splitting a planned three hour ride into two separate sessions on the same day to boost adaptation.

“I tried to make it as smart as possible to get more out of the planned training,” he said.

La Visma-Lease a Bike a partagé une vidéo de Jonas Vingegaard, qui a repris l’entraînement en extérieur plus d’un mois après sa grave chute. Physical fitness is one thing; another issue to be worked on is his confidence after his crash.

“He went to Majorca to be training uphill, and also descending on a higher speed. This is really the next step again, towards a normal Jonas.

“When he is able to join the team, the complete Tour de France team when they come from Dauphiné, that will also be the moment Jonas will be training and descending in a group again.”

Heemskerk confirmed that the accident has left Vingegaard with some nervousness, particularly on descents.

“I think everybody will have it after such a high speed crash,” he said. “Having so many injuries, and trauma. So that’s normal when you get back on the bike.

“But also when you have had broken bones, and you’re released to go ride outside, there is also the fear of falling onto that same side again when you know it’s not completely recovered yet. So that is something everybody would have on their minds.”

He and Vingegaard have focused on just taking things one step at a time. Being back in a group could initially be nerve wracking, but he believes he will overcome any lingering skittishness.

“It’s just about gaining the confidence,” he said. “You know how it is if you go train in the Alps. If you haven’t done it for a while, then you have to get used to it again. And then maybe after a week, you’re going pretty fast down the descent.

“It’s just something that comes with doing it.”

‘We are not sure yet how this will evolve’

Jonas Vingegaard and Tim Heemskerk 2023

Heemskerk would undoubtedly like to be able to say now that his rider will be back to 100 percent by the time the Tour starts.

He doesn’t do that, instead saying that he, and Vingegaard, and the team itself, don’t yet know things will play out.

However they are taking an all systems go approach to maximizing the chances of a Tour start. Will that bear fruit? Time will tell.

“He’s in Tignes now,” he said. “He is there for a few days now, taking easy rides to get used to the altitude.

“Then [after that adaptation] it’s just train, eat sleep, spend time with the family. That’s probably the best possible thing we can do at the moment. And then monitor every day if it’s going to be good enough to even start the Tour.”

He is surprisingly frank about that uncertainty.

“We’re not sure yet how this will evolve. The most important thing is that Jonas should get the feeling at one point like, ‘this is doable,’ or ‘I have my doubts, it is not doable.’ Of course then the plan will change,” he said.

“For now, we do our best, day by day. Jonas is putting in the hours and watches his nutrition and do the things we normally would do on an altitude camp. Then we will see how the body will react to it.”

There’s now just four weeks to the Tour de France, a short period of time for a rider who has been out of competition since early April.

Does Heemskerk rate his chances at 50-50, or how does he see it?

“That’s difficult, because I don’t really think like that,” he answers. “It’s day by day. It’s like, ‘what will come out of the numbers and the feeling and the feedback you get from Jonas today? What will be the new plan for tomorrow?’

“Basically, it’s like a bottom up process. Because we’ve done it in the past three Tours de Frances, where he was second, won and won, I do know what is needed. So in my mind, it’s like ‘okay, this is still the gap that’s there.’

Given the tight timescale until the start of the sport’s biggest event, how would the final decision be made about riding the Tour or not, and when would that come?

“I think the most important player there is Jonas,” he answered. “I can only say when he has doubts or has questions, to tell him where we are. And he knows it very well.

“Seeing the amount of time we have, that there is a gap we have to bridge in the next four, four and a half weeks.”

‘He should go to the Tour to win it’

Visma-Lease a Bike has had a huge turnaround since last season. The team could hardly put a foot wrong then, making history by becoming the first team to win all three grand tours in the same season.

This year the squad has seen key riders get ill or crash out, and is trying frantically to get back on track.

But the goals remain high despite what has happened.

“Without forcing, what Richard Plugge said, he needs to be 100 percent,” he explained. “When Jonas goes to the Tour, he should go to win it. And if there are any doubts, Jonas will also feel it.

“That’s also a quality of his. He can also feel that something is doable or not. If he’s improving fast, and he shows that he has good numbers in training and has a really good feeling, then we also will know.

“If that happens in the next month, then we’ll see a good Jonas in the Tour. For now, we make a winning plan every day towards being in the best possible shape.”

If everything works out, what is shaping up to be a fascinating Tour will be even better.

“You can only hope that there’s going to be a big battle between Evenpoel, Roglič, Pogačar and hopefully also Jonas,” Heemskerk said. “Those three will battle for sure, if nothing [unexpected] would happen, because they have really, really good preparation.

“And then if Jonas gets into the mix, it will be really good.”

Cycling fans will agree. The Giro was dramatic, but one-sided. A four-way Tour battle would make for spectacular viewing.

Vingegaard Hits Mallorca for Tour de France Prep with Countdown Ticking

The Dane gears up for a potential Tour de France return as rival Pogačar eyes a triple crown.

59th tirreno adriatico 2024 stage 5

The Danish rider was seen earlier this month returning to outdoor riding near his home in Denmark and has since been photographed at a café at the top of the Coll de Sóller climb on the Spanish island.

The owner of the café posted to Instagram , “It was great to see cycling royalty Jonas Vingegaard training on the Coll de Soller today and stopping to say hello to his fans! Wonderful to see him back on his bike and looking super fit!”

The coffee shop must make an excellent cappuccino because Vingegaard popped in again the next day and posed for yet another photo . “How privileged are we to have another visit from this charming man! Feeling honored!”

With the Grand Depart from Florance on June 29, there are now just 38 days until the Tour de France begins, and all eyes are on Vingegaard to see if he’ll be in top shape to race. Maybe especially so with his rival Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) currently dominating the Giro and heading to the Tour himself.

Seven-time Grand Tour winner Alberto Contador has already said that if Pogačar can take the win at the Giro and the Tour de France, he should target the Vuelta and go for the triple crown. Time will tell if such a feat is possible, and that might have everything to do with whether or not he has to battle Vingegaard in France.

CyclingNews reported that despite returning to the climbs of Mallorca, which marks another move in the right direction for the rider, Visma-Lease a Bike confirmed that no decision had been made on Vingegaard’s future program and that weather was key to the change of training location.
