When to visit Mount Beauty

Mount Beauty blooms in all seasons, but it undoubtedly shines the most in winter and summer.

From June to October, a steady stream of skiers and snowboarders descend on the shire, keen for days at nearby Falls Creek and Mt Hotham (30 and 75 kilometres away respectively). Mount Beauty makes a great winter vacation base, especially for families who are eager to experience snow without the high price tag. You’ll find a handful of stores that hire ski gear and tyre chains.

Once the weather warms up, Mount Beauty becomes a mountain biking mecca, drawing people from across Victoria and New South Wales. The trail network was built by passionate locals (read: people who know how to ride), while there are also plenty of gravel roads and fire trails for traditional cyclists.

The MTB de femme is a two-day mountain biking festival that supports women in the sport, and although it’s usually held in Falls Creek, Mount Beauty played host in March 2023. Autumn is also when you’ll experience the Mount Beauty Music Festival (22–23 April) and the Mount Beauty Running Festival (20 May).

Meanwhile, spring is the perfect time to shake off winter with community markets and pilates among the Alpine wildflowers.

Things to do in Mount Beauty

A visit to Mount Beauty is all about getting back to nature, whether that means carving down snowy slopes at Victoria’s best ski resorts or slowing down with a sunrise paddleboard.

Aside from the skiing at Falls Creek and Mt Hotham there’s also plenty of hiking, with Mount Beauty at the base of Mt Bogong (Warkwoolowler), Victoria’s highest mountain, 1986 metres above sea level.

Bogong Horseback Adventures

You can hike Mt Bogong and Bogong High Plains in Alpine National Park during spring, summer and autumn, enjoying meadows of wildflowers and visiting historic huts.

If you love history, set aside a day to head up to Falls Creek to follow Wallace’s Heritage Trail , a six-and-a-half-kilometre walk (approximately two and a half hours) that takes you to Wallace’s Hut, the oldest surviving cattlemen’s hut in the High Country. If you have young children you can still show them the hut, as it’s about 750 metres from a car park. It’s also wheelchair accessible.

Mount Beauty Gorge Walk

Follow the west branch of the Kiewa River on the Mount Beauty Gorge Walk.

Mount Beauty Gorge Walk is also worth checking out. It’s a stunning trail that starts on the edge of town, takes you across a swing bridge and then along the west branch of the Kiewa River. There’s a lovely swimming hole to discover, and, in summer, you can rock scramble to an impressive canyon (beware: it can get slippery). Call into Mount Beauty Visitor Information Centre to find out more.

You can also walk along the banks of the Kiewa River, which snakes through Mount Beauty. Starting in town, Kiewa River Trail is four kilometres (return) along a sealed path that leads you past farms and campsites.

Fly fishers also love throwing a line in from the river bank, hoping to catch the region’s famous trout . Be sure to purchase a recreational fishing licence (from $10) online from Victorian Fisheries Authority first.

If you’re chasing a shot of adrenaline, schedule a morning at Big Hill Mountain Bike Park , where you’ll have a choice of more than 50 kilometres of cross-country and downhill trails that cater to all levels of riders. Advanced bikers will want to hit up The Yellow Loop, a 10-kilometre cross-country track with challenging climbs, technical features and flowy vibes.

Australia’s High Country is synonymous with horse riding, and there are one-day and multi-day rides available through Alpine National Park.

Big Hill Mountain Bike Park

Jump off your bike to enjoy the view at Big Hill Mountain Bike Park.

If you’re travelling with your own horse, they’re allowed in the national park between December and April; reserve a campground with a horse yard via Parks Victoria. For a tour, Bogong Horseback Adventures offers trail rides for all abilities, as well as pack-horse journeys across some of the highest terrain in Australia.

A mindful way to start or end the day is with a BYO kayak or paddleboard on the peaceful Mount Beauty Pondage . Nearby you’ll find Mount Beauty Skate Park, a top spot to take the kids to burn some energy on the rails and ramps.

However you plan to spend your days, you’ll want to bookend them with a visit to Mount Beauty’s great lookouts. Snap a sunrise selfie with Mt Bogong in the background from Sullivans Lookout, only 10 kilometres from the town centre along Tawonga Gap Road; at sunset, stop off the Kiewa Valley Highway at Mt Bogong Lookout, with its great views of Bogong, Kiewa Valley and Mountain Creek.

Getting around

Mount Beauty is a hub for nature-based adventure, so it makes sense to have a car (a 4WD is best). However, if you’re visiting in winter and would rather not deal with snowy roads – and, potentially, snow chains – there are shuttle bus options up to the ski resorts, as well as private transfers and pick-ups from Albury Airport.

But if you’re looking to spend time in the great outdoors, Mount Beauty is the perfect getaway at any time of the year. There is so much to do around Mount Beauty that no matter when you visit, you won’t be disappointed.

Mount Beauty

Mount Beauty wasn’t called this way without reason. Nestled at the foot of Mt Bogong, Victoria’s highest mountain (1986m), it truly is a beauty. It is our favourite place in the High Country so far and it’s only four hours drive from Melbourne. Mount Beauty is the gateway to Falls Creek, Victoria’s largest ski resort, but if you visit in the warmer months, there are cycling tracks, walking tracks and rock pools for you to enjoy.

Now, if you are planning a trip to Mount Beauty, here are some of the best things to do in and around it.

The pondage Mt Beauty

Walk around the pondage

The 3 km walk around the pondage is a great way to experience the town’s spectacular alpine scenery. The reflections of the mountains and clouds over the pondage are just beautiful. It is a very easy walk that can be enjoyed by most people, or you can ride it if you prefer.

Hike the Mt Beauty Gorge Walk

This walk takes you along the aqueduct track to a swing bridge and over the West Kiewa River. As you follow the river, you will reach the canyon with some great views of the gorge. There is a swimming hole to be enjoyed at the end!

Note : During our walk, we came across a Red Belly Black snake and another group saw a brown snake on the same day. So it’s a good idea to look out for snakes along the way and to be careful where you step. Remember, they are more scared of us than we are of them but still, try not to tread on one!

Spend a day in Bright

The alpine town of Bright is surrounded by magical views of Mount Hotham and is split in two by the Ovens River. It is a very peaceful town, even when packed with summer crowds. Because of its proximity to Mount Beauty, you could also base yourself here and take day trips to Mount Beauty. Both towns are worth exploring.

If you visit in Autumn, you’re in for a treat due to the many deciduous trees whose leaves change colour around then. Many say that Autumn is the ultimate time to visit this part of Victoria.

Here are some of the best things to do in Bright:

The Canyon Trail Bright

Walk the Canyon Trail

The Canyon Trail is a historic track that follows the Ovens River downstream, crossing swing bridges and following a small canyon carved out by the river and some water races dug by early miners. Information placards along the Canyon Trail give you a good insight into the town’s gold mining past. The track is an easy 3 km return and will take you less than an hour to complete.

Have a beer at the Bright Brewery

The Bright Brewery has become a local institution and is always packed, especially in summer. Normally, you can spend your afternoon lounging around on one of the many bean-bags laid out on the lawn outside, enjoying the sound of the river as you down award-winning craft beer. However, when we visited recently, this was not available due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Swim in the Ovens River

During the warmer months, the Ovens River is a fabulous place for a refreshing swim. Next to the brewery, you’ll find a small water amusement park, springboards, slides, and water slides leading down into the river. It’s fabulous for both kids and adults who need to cool down! The banks of the river are also a great spot for picnics.

Breakfast or lunch at one of the many cafes in town

There is no shortage of cafes in Bright serving fabulous food made from fresh, local produce. Black Bird Cafe, Food Wine Friends, the Riverdeck Kitchen, Wild Thyme Cafe and Coral Lee are highly recommended.

Visit the small alpine villages of Bogong Village and Harrietville

Bogong Village

Bogong Village is 15 kilometres away from Mount Beauty and was originally built for workers on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. These days, it’s a peaceful place to kick back and relax with awe-inspiring views. You can take a walk around Lake Guy, go kayaking, swim, fish or simply sit by the lake with a picnic.

Harrietville

Harrietville is 20 minutes South of Bright and right at the foot of Mount Hotham and Mount Feathertop. A gold mining settlement during the Victorian Gold Rush, this picturesque town is now an ideal all-seasons holiday destination. Autumn will bring you Harrietville at its best.

In Harrietville, you can walk along the river to the old Chinese settlement, visit the museum (closed during Covid) or visit the local trout farm.

Take the drive up to Falls Creek

Although Falls Creek is at its busiest during the ski season, the alpine scenery at the top is worth the detour even in summer. Some even cycle up there, but there was no way I was doing that! Falls Creek is set amongst the pristine environment of the Alpine National Park and has many more hiking trails that take you out into the wilderness of the high country. Just make sure to bring some layers, as it does get much colder at this altitude.

Where to stay in Mt Beauty?

We stayed at The Pod, an Airbnb in Tawonga South which is just down the road and walking distance to Mt Beauty. The Pod is compact but it had everything we needed, including a bath! It’s made entirely from recycled wood which gives it so much character. The deck at the front was the perfect place for that morning coffee or evening wine. We especially loved having the cheeky local birds visit and join in on our conversations!

Other accommodation around Mount Beauty

We think the pod is great for two people but if it’s not your thing or there’s more of you then there are plenty of other accommodation options in the area. We recommend using HotelsCombined to find a great deal. It lets you search across all the major accommodation websites.

20 Most Beautiful Places to Visit in Montana

Otherwise known as Big Sky Country, I personally think the diverse and dazzling Western state does live up to the hype! This is a seriously gorgeous place, home to a large and pristine wilderness preserve that crosses into Canada.

It’s a tough choice as pretty much all the scenery here is jaw-dropping, but here are my favorite spots…

1. Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park

Aptly called the “Coorown of the Continent,” Glacier National Park is home to over one million acres of beautiful, unspoiled terrain.

The scenic wilderness area encompasses jaw-dropping scenery, such as spectacular lakes, glacier-carved peaks, pristine forests, and alpine meadows.

It also forms part of the world’s first International Peace Park , perfect for both adventurous souls and solitude seekers. I would suggest gazing in awe at the huge glacier and spotting mountain goats amid the gorgeous scenery at Grinnell Glacier.

Drive along the breathtaking scenic mountain road of the Sun Highway, which passes through more than fifty miles of unique terrain, and then paddle across the pristine waters of Lake McDonald.

See the beauty of Glacier National Park in 4k…

https://youtu.be/x7GkebUe6XQ

My favorite highlights…

  • Driving to Logan Pass, the highest point in the park (that can be reached by car) and saw some seriously gorgeous panoramic views.
  • Hiking to the Grinnell Glacier where I found stunning waterfalls, vibrant emerald lakes and beautiful scenery along the way.
  • Taking a boat tour across the Lake McDonald Valley.

2. American Prairie Reserve

American Prairie Reserve

The American Prairie Reserve is located on Montana’s Great Plains and is, I honestly think, one of the most stunning spots to explore in Montana.

Stretching north and south of the Missouri River, the massive conservation area preserves the natural mixed-grass prairie ecosystem and native wildlife, including deer, elk, pronghorn, burrowing owls, bison, and bighorn sheep.

The area is another beautiful gem in the Montana Tourism crown. Dive into the history at the Great Plains Dinosaur Museum or visit the restored Prairie Union Schoolhouse.

Wake up to the awesome free-roaming bison and chirping birds. This place will force you to slow down and observe the beauty of the prairie ecosystem. Roam around freely, hike, or bike. This is a truly magical place that nature lovers will adore.

My personal highlights…

  • Stopping by the National Discovery Center and learning about the area and its history.
  • Exploring by mountain bike, where trails include obstacles such as steep hills, soft sand, and ruts.
  • Staying until it was dark to see the clear, starry skies, I even saw the Milky Way.

3. Rocky Mountains

Rocky Mountains Montana

Home to over a hundred ranges in Central Montana, the Rocky Mountains run along the western part of Montana. The rugged and rustic charm of the Rockies is the best place to seek both solace and outdoor adventures.

Snuggled in the Madison Range of Montana, the Big Sky ski resort is enveloped by mountains in every direction. It is definitely worth a visit, especially if you’re a fan of winter sports.

Another charming destination located at the doorstep of Glacier National Park is Whitefish Resort Mountain, home to a shimmering lake, lofty peaks, stunning trails, and a quirky downtown area.

My highlights…

  • Watching a breathtaking sunrise at Dream Lake before heading to Emerald Lake.
  • Visiting the Coffee on The Rocks café for beautiful views whilst enjoying an oat milk latte.
  • Discovering cross-country skiing in the winter.

4. Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park

One of North America’s most loved national parks, the world-famous Yellowstone National Park sprawls over a 3,500-square-mile area. The beautiful landscapes sit atop a volcanic hot spot, which makes them extra special and offers some truly unique landscapes.

Home to many species of wildlife, dramatic canyons, rivers, hot springs, and gushing geysers, the park is mostly in Wyoming but crosses over to Montana and Idaho .

  • Driving to the Northeast Entrance road and looking out at the incredible scenery.
  • Rafting ride down the river.
  • Hiking the scenic Fairy Falls Trail and seeing one of the best waterfalls in the park.

Bozeman Montana

Located in Gallatin County in southwest Montana, Bozeman is ranked among the most livable places in the US, and for good reason.

I love the dramatic mountains, impressive wildlife and cultural scenes here, and the opportunities to go hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, skiing, and backcountry exploring.

Ski in the Bridger Bowl area, raft on the Gallatin River, or witness the stunning fall colors of nearby Yellowstone Park. The city of Bozeman is a true Montana treasure!

  • Learning how to rock climb on a climbing indoor wall.
  • Going on a scavenger hunt which was a fun way to explore the city.
  • Soaking in Bozeman Hot Springs which was the perfect way to end a long day of sightseeing.

6. West Yellowstone

West Montana - one of the best small towns to visit in Montana

West Yellowstone is one of the best small towns in southern Montana. It’s a gateway to the world-famous Yellowstone National Park, but it is also a wonderful tourist attraction and a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts in both summer and winter.

The charming Montana town is quaint and easy on the eye. It is home to some interesting independent shops and restaurants, a theatre, and plenty of places to stay.

Highlights of West Yellowstone include the Yellowstone River ( the country’s last “free-flowing” river), the popular Playmill Theatre, the beautiful Earthquake Lake, and The Museum of Yellowstone. During the winter, I would recommend snowmobiling as a fun Montana activity!

  • Visiting the Museum of Yellowstone located in the old train station and learning all about the area’s history.
  • Going on a thrilling adventure on a snowmobile during the winter season months.
  • Enjoying hearty homestyle food at the Western-style Outpost Restaurant.

7. Paradise Valley

Paradise Valley Montana

It is close enough to Yellowstone yet far away from the crowds; the Paradise Valley is dwarfed by the towering Absaroka Range on the east and Gallatin Range on the west.

Located in southwest Montana, Paradise Valley is Montana’s premier vacation destination. With the gushing waters of the Yellowstone River, snow-capped mountains, a crisp blue sky, and beautiful ranch land, It deserves a place on this list!

I highly recommend soaking in the naturally warm waters at the Chico Hot Springs or La Duke Hot Springs or hiking along the breathtaking trails!

  • Watching and videoing the magnificent eruption of the Old Faithful.
  • Relaxing at the Chico Hot Springs which was surrounded by lush greenery.
  • Having a go at frisbee golf!

8. Livingston

The largest primitive island on Flathead Lake, Wild Horse Island State Park , is only accessible by water. For centuries, the Salish-Kootenai Indians used this beautiful island as pasture land to keep horses from being stolen.

Full of pine forests, incredible trails, and wildlife watching, you can catch a glimpse of the wild horses still inhabiting this park. A designated state park since 1987, Horse Island’s 2,200-acre beautiful state park offers swimming, hiking, boating, and kayaking.

The high-end interiors, with walls with gold threading, a marble fireplace, and beautiful paintings, are a perfect example of early American residential architecture.

Mastering Mount Fuji: Your Expert Route to the Top

Accompanied by the stunning scenery of Mount Fuji, Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine, the cherry blossoms in spring are amazingly beautifu

Climbing the highest mountain in the world is a feat that you can brag about for the rest of your life. But ample knowledge of the mountain and its trails could be the difference between success and failure. Read our guide to give yourself the most rewarding experience while hiking Mount Fuji.

Introduction to Mount Fuji: Japan's Majestic Icon

Panoramic plane view of beautiful sunset in the sky over clouds and Mount Fuji, Japan

Mount Fuji is a volcanic mountain on Honshu Island, Japan. It is what is termed a stratovolcano, a type of volcano composed of several strata (layers) of lava and tephra. Standing at a dizzying height of over 3,770 meters, Mt. Fuji is the tallest mountain in Japan. It’s still an active volcano and is known among people in Japan by various names, including Fuji-san or Fujiyama .

Besides being Japan's tallest peak, Mt. Fuji is also an official UNESCO World Heritage Site, a Special Place of Scenic Beauty, and a Japanese Historic Site. All of these accolades and titles were given to the mountain in attempts to preserve and promote its cultural heritage. Mt. Fuji is also one of the Three Holy Mountains in Japan, alongside Mt. Tate and Mt. Haku.

The view of Mount Fuji from Tokyo or any other nearby city is simply stunning, especially on days with clear weather. The lush forest surrounding the mountain only adds to its beauty from afar.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of people climb Mount Fuji, making it Japan’s most climbed mountain. The mountain has several climbing routes, many of which can challenge non-mountaineers without overwhelming them. However, you still need to prepare mentally and physically before you make your first attempt.

Planning Your Hike: Essential Tips and Considerations

Hikers gather during sunrise on the Mt. Fuji summit .

Planning your hike well is the first and most important step in climbing Mt.Fuji. Below, we offer practical advice to help you prepare better for the challenge ahead.

Train your mind and body

You can start training weeks before you go on the hike by performing a series of simple exercises. These activities help prepare you physically and mentally by putting you in situations similar to those you’ll face on Mt. Fuji. Start with long walks or jogs combined with aerobic workouts like jumping rope, swimming, etc. You can then hike some of the smaller mountains in the area or climb long stairs to build stamina and strengthen leg muscles. Feel free to include some mindful breathing exercises and meditation. Those help a lot!

Choose the right season

Decide whether you would like to hike the mountain during the regular climbing season or not. If you choose to do so, you’ll enjoy all of the Mt. Fuji facilities, mild weather, and easier access. If you choose to go off-season, you need to go with a guide and take additional precautions.

Obtain all the necessary documentation (if applicable)

You don’t need a permit to hike the mountain in its official climbing season or off-season. However, you need to fill out a climbing form if you plan to hike the mountain in the off-season.

Choose the right hiking route

There are several hiking routes on Mt. Fuji, and choosing any of them will have a great impact on the scenery, difficulty level, and cost of your journey. Take a look at our detailed overview of the various hiking routes available and make an informed decision.

Hiking Routes: Exploring the Trails to the Summit

Mt. Fuji climbing, Yoshida Trail , Japan

There are 4 main hiking trails leading to Mt. Fuji’s famous summit at 3,776 meters. Each of them starts from a different side at the base of the mountain and includes 10 stations, with the first station located at the base and the 10th at the summit. The 5th station of each trail is the point at which cars can no longer pass due to a lack of pavement. The majority of the climbers prefer to start their journey from one of the four 5th stations. Join us as we explore the color-coded Mt. Fuji hiking trails.

Yoshida Trail (Yellow)

This trail starts at the Fuji-Subaru Line 5th Station from the north and is at an altitude of 2300 meters. It’s the most popular trail among all the others due to its easy accessibility from central Tokyo and low difficulty. The trail is littered with lots of accommodation options and other facilities. Perfect for beginners, it will take you about 6 hours to ascend and 4 hours to descend via a separate trail. Only choose this trail if you’re comfortable hiking behind a large crowd.

Fujinomiya Trail (Blue)

This is the second-most-climbed Mt. Fuji trail. It’s by far the quickest, taking around 5 hours to ascend and 3 hours to descend, but it’s also one of the most difficult to navigate due to its steepness and rocky terrain. The trail begins at the Fujinomiya Trail 5th Station, which sits at an altitude of 2400 meters. It’s located south of the mountain and is easily accessible via Shin-Fuji Station. The entire route has about a dozen mountain huts. Use this trail if you want more of a challenge.

Subashiri Trail (Red)

The Subashiri 5th Station is easier to access than all the others except that of Yoshida. The trail remains independent until its 8th station, where it joins the Yoshida Trail. It takes about 6 hours to ascend from the 2000-meter altitude station and 3 hours to descend. The Subashiri Trail is ideal if you want to get more unique views. However, it has fewer mountain huts and amenities.

Gotemba Trail (Green)

Beginning at the Gotemba 5th Station (1400 meters altitude), this route is the most difficult. Going up might take you about 7 hours and coming down around 3 hours. You won’t find any toilets or huts until you reach the 7th station. The Gotemba Trail is a great route for experienced hikers who prefer more quiet and fewer crowds during the journey.

Climbing Season: Best Times to Tackle Mount Fuji

First time of Japan's Mountain Day, national crowd on the top of Fuji Mountain

As with many other mountains in Japan, Mount Fuji has an optimal climbing season, where most of the mountain huts are active and there’s easy transportation to the various hiking trails. The official climbing season on Mt. Fuji starts in early July and ends in mid-September. Summer is in full swing during this period, so there is no snow on the mountain and the weather is mostly mild, making it easier and safer for people to climb to the top of the mountain.

The climbing season for the Yoshida Trail starts earlier than the other routes. Recently, it began on the first day of July, while that of the other trails began on the 10th day of July. However, the official climbing seasons for all trails end on the same day, which typically falls on September 10.

Any period outside of the official climbing season is called the off-season. At this time, most of the huts and amenities are closed and the trails are less accessible by public transport. The weather conditions are also unfavorable, and in winter they get quite dangerous. Despite these obstacles, a few people still attempt to climb Mt. Fuji in the off-season, especially between mid-April and early June. If you’re an inexperienced hiker, we don’t recommend that you attempt an off-season climb, especially without an expert guide.

Mount Fuji Stations: Rest Stops Along the Ascent

Hinode-kan Hut at 7th station on Mt Fuji, Yamanashi, Japan.

Earlier, we discussed how each hiking route is divided into 10 stations, with the 5th station being the starting point for most hikers. But these stations are a lot more than landmarks. They serve as places where climbers can rest, refuel, and acclimatize to the altitude. This is especially true for the 5th station, which tends to contain parking lots, toilets, rest rooms, and small shops. One of the most important amenities of hiking trail stations is the mountain hut or cabin. These facilities offer basic lodging for hikers and climbers. Many of them don’t have bathing amenities, but they provide toilets, meals, and snacks. You can stay there overnight in the middle of your climb and continue the journey the next day.

Preparing for Altitude: Tips for Climbing Mount Fuji

Terrain on climbing route on Mount Fuji

Climbing Mt. Fuji is not as difficult as some people might think. Even though the mountain is gigantic, its terrain mostly consists of gentle slopes with a few patches of steepness. However, the main obstacle is the risk of altitude sickness, which can occur as a result of the thinner air and lower oxygen levels towards the summit. You can mitigate this risk by hiking during the day and not at night. But what if you want to catch the sunrise in the early morning? We recommend that you at least reach the 7th station in the evening and then sleep at a hut through the night. You can continue your journey early the next morning and arrive at peak sunrise period (4:30am-5:00am).

Throughout your journey, remember to stay hydrated by drinking water and pace yourself by taking some time at stations to acclimate to the high altitude conditions. Take an extended break or return to a lower elevation if you feel dizzy, have headaches, nausea, or fatigue, as this could be a symptom of altitude sickness. Our final, and perhaps most important, recommendation is to ensure you have the correct gear and equipment for the climb.

Climbing Essentials: Gear and Equipment for the Ascent

Crowds of climbers at the summit in Mt Fuji

To ensure your safety and optimize your experience during the climb, there are certain items you should bring on your journey. Hence, we’ve provided a packing list of essential gear and equipment for climbing Mount Fuji. Check it out!

Clothing: Wear thick protective clothes with extra layers, gloves, and rain gear, as it can get very windy and cold higher up the mountain.

Shoes: Only use proper hiking shoes or boots that offer protection for your ankles.

Food and water: Bring enough food and water to sustain you on the journey, especially if you plan to follow a route with few mountain huts, such as the Subashiri Trail.

Money: Take some cash with you for shopping at the stations. These places sell everything, from water to canned oxygen.

Additional hiking items: Carry a pair of hiking sticks with you or buy some on the trail. You can also get a headlamp for the pre-dawn ascent and sunscreen for a midday journey.

Sunrise Summit: Witnessing the Spectacular Views

Hikers at the summit of Mt. Fuji during sunrise

All of these preparations, considerations, and precautions are done with one goal in mind: reaching the summit of Mount Fuji. And when you eventually achieve this goal, you’ll see that it has all been worth it. You’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and the iconic sunrise over Japan. This awe-inspiring experience is even better when you make it there just in time for sunrise.

Descending Mount Fuji: Tips for a Safe Descent

Yoshida Trail for hikers to descend in Mt Fuji

Don’t be deceived; the descent from the summit of Mount Fuji is just as hard, if not harder, than the initial climb. You have less energy and motivation. You may even be feeling some heaviness in your knees. To avoid potential injuries or accidents, be sure to take regular breaks and stay hydrated. Also, take an easier trail while going down, preferably one with volcanic gravel. Many people claim that the Gotemba Trail is the best for descending.

Post-Climb Recovery: Rest and Relaxation

So, you’ve reached the summit and completed the tasking journey back down to the rest of Japan. What next? We recommend that you focus on recovery, rest, and relaxation. The most common way to do this is to visit one of the nearby restaurants for a hearty meal. Another way to relax is to soak in a hot spring while you reflect on the accomplishment of summiting Mount Fuji. These hot springs are located in onsen (Japanese hot spring facilities). To learn more about these hot springs and their health benefits, read our recent post about onsen in Japan.

Legends of Mount Fuji: Ancient Tales and Folklore

Painting of Mt. Fuji from Tagonoura Japan with standing Japanese woman in balcony

As a traditional and cultural landmark in Japan, Mt. Fuji is the centerpiece of dozens of folktales, including the story of its birth. According to ancient Japanese legend, the Ainu fire goddess called Fuchi created the mountain from barren land in one day. Visu, a common woodsman, bore witness to this creation and named it Fuji-yama. In Shinto religion, Sengen or Konohanasakuya-hime is the goddess of the mountain. There are also several fictional prose narratives that mention mountains, including the 8th-century tale of the bamboo cutter. The Edo period (1603–1868) saw even more tales appear in the form of legends, songs, and poems.

Conclusion: Embracing the Majesty of Mount Fuji

If you’re planning to visit Tokyo anytime soon, you should consider an adventurous climb to the summit of Mount Fuji. Remember to prepare physically and mentally before the hike, get your gear ready, and take all of the precautions during the journey. While you navigate the interesting challenges, don’t forget to enjoy the surrounding natural beauty and look forward to the rewards of scaling Japan’s iconic peak.
