Trip's Diner (St. Pete)

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Three of us had a late breakfast/ early lunch there a few days ago. We had to wait about 10 minutes for a table and it was well worth the wait. My eggs were perfectly scrambled, the bacon was thick and crispy and the biscuits... and gravy were Delicious. One in our party had the meat loaf sandwich that was huge and tasty. The third in our party had eggs Benedict that she said were some of the best she ever tasted. The coffee was hot and fresh, the server was friendly and checked on us several times. I would highly recommend Trip’s diner to anyone More

Thank you for the great review!

Visited twice to eat lunch. The first time was a total disappointment. Waited almost 40 minutes to be seated. Upon 2 inquiries I was twice told "next 5 minutes or so" There were empty tables, but possibly not the staff to serve them. After more... than 35 minutes I left hungry. On past vacations I have eaten lunch there and am a big fan of their fried green tomatoes. IMHO the best I ever ate in St. Pete. Next time I passed I stepped in and asked to be seated at a table and was offered a stool at the counter which I declined. After inquiring about several empty tables I was offered a seat at a window table. Noticed a!so a sign advising guests that they no longer served dinner. I can only imagine that this was due to lack of staff. The young who served me was efficient and polite. Had the fried green tomatoes and for dessert a piece of excellent peanut butter pie. Both were excellent. The fried tomatoes were a large serving and too much for me to finish. Waitress offered to pack the remainder to go. Liked the food and service during my second visit. More

This is a review of the Trip's Diner in Seminole which is owned by the same people in St. Pete. I have had two excellent ,meals there in the last 2 weeks (one lunch and one brunch). Both meals were excellent. The place is very... clean and they are observing social distancing by using only about 1/2 of their tables. I have also eaten at the trip's in St. Pete and that one is excellent as well. Overall excellnt diner food and the staff are wonderful. More

Thank you for the nice review!

We meet friends every Wednesday morning at Tripp's. I had to give up on their eggs because they would always come out pretty much raw even though I ordered them medium. Lately I tried ordering eggs again, but even ordering them medium-to-hard, the eggs show... up almost raw for the past three weeks. I try to complain, but nobody seems to care. The breakfasts are expensive, and their pancakes are tough, so it's back to a biscuit for me. More

Found this while visiting the area. Great food and service. Very keto diet friendly. The server helped us order to save money since we didn’t want any sides. Build your own omelette with a great variety of cheeses and meats. Very kid friendly and even... had many dog visitors. Parking can be challenging because it is Very popular. Breakfast is served all day and a large variety of food options for the whole family. More

This review is based on only eating breakfast at this place. I ordered the Big Breakfast. I ordered my eggs over easy and my husband ordered scrambled. I highly recommend the scrambled eggs. They were cooked perfectly. The Big Breakfast also came with a gigantic... pancake. Even though it was enormous, it was so fluffy and delicious! The bacon was thick cut and savory. The breakfast comes with homefries. I upgraded to the loaded homefries (Make ‘em Hot), which was pepperjack cheese and delicious jalapeños added. Wow! My husband and I are going to try to make these at home, they were that amazing. We also got cheese grits. We are from NC and I haven’t not enjoyed the grits at any restaurants there. I really enjoyed these. My husband would have preferred extra cheese, but I thought they were perfect. We sat on the patio and it was dog friendly. More

I visit Trips every few months and it never disappoints. It is clean, the food is always fresh and delicious and the service is great. Our waitress was quick, happy, and helpful with recommendations and answering our questions. Our drinks were refilled quickly. We had... delicious green fried tomatoes for an appetizer. One of us had the meatloaf sandwhich with a side of cheese grits, one had the Reds shrimp and grits, and I had the steak and cheese sandwhich. It was loaded with perfectly cooked onions, mushrooms, and peppers. Everything was delicious! The servings are more than ample. We went at an off time so there was no wait for a table. If there is a line it is worth the wait. I need to go back to try a hubcap pancake! Great varied, fun menu! More

Before visiting, we read the menu. I saw the chicken salad sandwich and I could not wait to try it! We tried the onion strings to start while we waited for our meals. After a while, I was informed they were out of chicken salad... :( (It happens) Ok, so I order an egg salad sandwich. A few minutes later, I am once again informed they just ran out. At this time, the other guests are receiving their meals. I then order the ham and swiss. I guess the menu was not as helpful as I was expecting a melted ham and swiss instead I got two super thick slices of lightly toasted sourdough with very thick slices of ham topped with semi melted swiss. A little bit of let down. The others in our party liked their food but nothing stood out. More

Trips opened while we were away from St. Pete for several years. Upon returning home in 2013, we tried it for breakfast and was not impressed. The food was OK but we found the menu not very interesting as it did not provide much variety... in choices or anything different and unique from other breakfast places. After 9 years and seeing the place crowded whenever we would pass it, we decided to give it a second try. We were extremely pleased to see an expanded breakfast menu from our first visit and items that you normally do not see on other breakfast menus such as gouda / blue / asiago cheeses for omelets, eggs benedict made with fried green tomatoes instead of an English muffin, and wonderful obviously homemade corn bread along with standard choices of toast / biscuit. These are just a few examples of their innovativeness which has greatly enhanced the breakfast offerings. We are very glad we gave this place a second chance. We look forward to future visits and highly recommend Trip's based on today's experience. More

Thank you! I am glad to see you enjoyed everything!

We decided on Trip’s for breakfast based on trip advisor. Maybe our experience was an anomaly but we certainly won’t be back. Service: very poor. Waitress had zero personality & not attentive. I had to flag her down to ask for a refill on coffee... & I only had two cups total. She never came by with a pot?! About 10+ minutes after we ordered she came by to say it was going to be 15 minutes on biscuits. Since my sister ordered chicken & biscuits we decided to wait. I specifically asked that my food NOT be fixed until hers was ready to be fixed so we could eat together. After a short while, I noticed that food was sitting & sitting in the window. I got up to use the restroom & got a better view of it. Indeed it was mine. I watched it continue to sit there until the server loaded it up on her tray with other food & brought it to our table….. The chicken & biscuits with home fries were steaming. My food, a pancake, eggs, sausage, home fries was cold. The butter just sat in a glob on the pancake. The sausage was cold to touch & didn’t look fresh. It’s a frozen type patty like at a fast food restaurant. Potatoes were real but cold as well. Eggs the same. I voiced my concern about the food not being fresh. The server retrieved her manager who was hesitant to agree until she felt the sausage patty & pancake. Then she proceeded to place blame on a lack of kitchen staff. She offered to replace the food but I was grossed out & declined. Server never returned with coffee or to check back up really. Just delivered the check. It’s also very expensive. My sister had a chocolate milk, two chicken & biscuits with hashbrowns for $20. More

The parking situation is virtually nonexistent and pathetic. After circling for over 20 minutes, I finally found parking on a distant side street. This place was absurdly crowded. People were standing along the sidewalk broiling in the sun waiting to get in here. Every single... server here was grumpy, frowning, brusque, and harassed. There were squabbles between servers. Plates were crashing to the ground in the kitchen. Servers were yelling (screaming) orders to the kitchen at the top of their lungs. My two egg breakfast arrived with unusually rubbery thick bacon, the home fries absolutely sucked (they don’t have hash browns) and the accompanying toast was only one slice of bread. I sat at the counter and was knocked into repeatedly by servers as I ate. I was happy to get the hell out of here. Trips Diner has to stand out as possibly the most overrated and unfriendly dump with corresponding below-average food that I have ever eaten at. More

Let me start off by saying that breakfast is my favorite meal - especially to eat out. The myriad good reviews led me to Trip's. Went on a Sunday morning and waited about 30-40 minutes - which was expected. Food is excellent and service is... good. Very small parking lot behind the location (maybe 10 spots), then it is street parking where you can find it. More

Great comfortable spot! The country fried steak and sausage gravy is super good. The second time I went I had fries and brown gravy, I would highly recommend as a side to a lunch entree! Also, the second time I went, the waiter Bobby remembered... me from last time, which is very much appreciated in a busy establishment. The service staff is very prompt and friendly. If you can find a parking spot, it’s definitely worth a try! More

The following opinions result from several breakfast, lunch and dinner visits to the MLK Street Trip's location in St Petersburg. Trip's is a moderately priced spot offering decent service, moderate prices, acceptable sensibility to allergens, dog-friendly outdoor dining, reasonable menu selection and acceptable food. Breakfast... offerings are generally palatable, but lunch and dinner selections can be disappointing. Plusses worth a mention include burgers, breaded fries, coleslaw, salad sandwiches, omelets, and chili with beans. On the other hand, Texas- toast grilled cheese, French onion soup, sausage patties, and occasionally under-cooked pancakes are best avoided. Finally, if you prefer to visit this location during peak hours, prepare yourself for difficult parking and an outside waiting line. If you're looking for a nearby alternative, consider Kristina's. More

I am in love with this restaurant! Food was perfect and anyone who has ever read my reviews, knows I don’t let any restaurant get away with mediocre food. I don’t care for eggs, most times I ask if I can substitute the eggs for... a side and if there’s a up charge it’s ok… mostly, the answer is no… so all my life the restaurant kept my eggs (profit for them) and I paid full price for a side… now, I’m saying this because I got my side for free and no nasty eggs on my plate, in a to go box… or extra profit for the restaurant… to me, it was a win…win. I had chicken fried steak w/ sausage gravy, fried potatoes, pancake, biscuit… I wanted to try everything! The steak was wonderful, pancake, very tasty, potatoes very good and the biscuit was real! Our server was Kevin, he gets your order, if you have questions he can answer and he has a great smile… all in all, I will return to St Petersburg and I will return to this restaurant! Oh they have pies…. I got 2 pieces to go, peanut butter, very rich, very good…. Pumpkin cheesecake, hubby said it was really good… must’ve been, he didn’t even offer me a bite… so, please check this place out, we had a 20 minute wait… who cares when your food is that delectable!!!!!!!! What to Know About Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s Newly Elected President

Here are five key insights into Mexico’s new president as people wonder whether she will diverge from Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s policies or focus on cementing his legacy.

  • Share full article

A smiling woman is greeting several of her supporters.

By Natalie Kitroeff

Reporting from Mexico City

Claudia Sheinbaum’s list of accolades is long: She has a Ph.D in energy engineering, participated in a United Nations panel of climate scientists awarded a Nobel Peace Prize and governed the capital, one of the largest cities in the hemisphere.

On Sunday, she added another achievement to her résumé: becoming the first woman elected president of Mexico.

Ms. Sheinbaum, 61, captured at least 58 percent of the vote in a landmark election on Sunday that featured two women competing for the nation’s highest office — a groundbreaking contest in a country long known for a culture of machismo and rampant violence against women.

Mexico Election Results: Sheinbaum Wins

See results and maps for Mexico’s 2024 presidential election.

“For the first time in 200 years of the republic, I will become the first female president of Mexico,” she said. “And as I have said on other occasions, I do not arrive alone. We all arrived, with our heroines who gave us our homeland, with our ancestors, our mothers, our daughters and our granddaughters.”

Now that she has clinched the presidency, Ms. Sheinbaum’s next hurdle will be stepping out of the shadow of her predecessor and longtime mentor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the outgoing president.

She and Mr. López Obrador are “different people,” she said in an interview. He’s an oilman who invested in environmentally questionable projects; she’s a climate scientist. Yet Ms. Sheinbaum has appealed to voters mainly by promising to cement his legacy, backing moves like his big bet on the national oil company and proposed constitutional changes that critics call antidemocratic.

Their alliance has also left many Mexicans asking: Can Ms. Sheinbaum be her own leader? Or will she just be his pawn?

“There’s this idea, because a lot of columnists say it, that I don’t have a personality,” Ms. Sheinbaum complained to reporters earlier this year. “That President Andrés Manuel López Obrador tells me what to do.”

She insists she will govern independently from Mr. López Obrador and has some different priorities. But veering too far from his agenda could be very risky.

Here are five things to know about the newly elected president of Mexico that help inform whether she will stray from Mr. López Obrador’s policies or dedicate herself to cementing his legacy.

1. Sheinbaum will inherit a host of challenges.

A former ballet dancer, Ms. Sheinbaum calls herself “obsessive” and “disciplined.” But discipline may not be enough, analysts say.

As president, she already stands to inherit a long list of troubles. The state-owned oil company is buckling under debt, migration through the country has reached historical highs and cartel violence continues to torment the country.

She has said she would continue Mr. López Obrador’s policy of addressing the drivers of violence instead of waging war on the criminal groups, but will also work to lower rates of impunity and build up the national guard.

With a U.S. presidential election just months away, she told The New York Times that she was prepared to work with whichever candidate wins. Publicly, she has echoed Mr. López Obrador’s emphasis on tackling migration by addressing its root causes.

In a hint of potential change, she said in a recent debate that she would seek to reform the c ountry’s migration authority , an agency often accused of corruption.

2. She’s seen as reserved, even aloof.

The Times spoke with two dozen people who have worked with or know Ms. Sheinbaum and also visited campaign events, reviewed her writings and her media appearances and interviewed her, once in 2020 and again this year.

What became clear is that Ms. Sheinbaum, (pronounced SHANE-balm), has long seemed more comfortable quietly getting things done than selling herself or her achievements.

The granddaughter of Jewish immigrants who fled Europe, she rarely discusses being Jewish or almost anything about her personal life, colleagues say. When interviewers ask her about the Nobel Prize she shared with a panel of climate researchers, she notes how many others were involved in the work.

She is known as a tough boss with a quick temper who can inspire in her staff fear and adoration at the same time. Publicly, though, her affect is so controlled it verges on aloof.

Some say her professorial demeanor could pose a challenge in a political landscape defined by Mr. López Obrador, who built his party into a juggernaut by relying on the force of his personality.

“She needs him,” said Carlos Heredia, a Mexican political analyst. “She doesn’t have the charisma, she doesn’t have the popularity, she doesn’t have the political stamina of her own, so she needs to borrow that from López Obrador.”

For some Mexicans, however, a thrills-free woman may be an ideal antidote to an entertaining man who plunged the country into partisan turmoil.

3. She’s long sought to keep Mr. López Obrador happy.

The candidate’s political career began when Mr. López Obrador was elected mayor of Mexico City in 2000 and invited her to a meeting at a diner. “What I want is to reduce pollution,” she recalled Mr. López Obrador telling her. “Do you know how to do that?”

Ms. Sheinbaum, who by then had written more than a dozen reports on energy use and carbon emissions, said yes. She became his environment minister. In meetings, she seemed willing to do almost anything to make her boss happy, according to several people who worked with her.

“The phrase she used over and over again was ‘The mayor said to,’” said Mr. Heredia, who worked with her in city government under Mr. López Obrador. What that meant, according to Mr. Heredia: “We are not a cabinet for giving ideas,” he said. “We are a group of people here to execute what he decides.”

In the years that followed, Ms. Sheinbaum straddled academia and politics, but she always stayed close to Mr. López Obrador. When he founded his Morena party in 2014, he asked her to run on the party’s ticket to become mayor of Tlalpan, a borough of Mexico City. With his backing, she won.

4. She is known for being a demanding boss.

In 2018, Mr. López Obrador was swept into the presidency in a landslide and Ms. Sheinbaum became Mexico City’s mayor. She quickly gained a reputation as an exacting boss.

“One doesn’t go to her meetings to tell her, ‘I’m working on it,’” said Soledad Aragón, a former member of Ms. Sheinbaum’s cabinet. When she walked into a room, Ms. Aragón said, everyone sat up straight.

As mayor, she could remember specific numbers mentioned in a meeting weeks after it occurred, Ms. Aragón said, calling her “brilliant” and “demanding,” especially of herself, adding: “It has gotten results.”

Five officials who have worked with Ms. Sheinbaum, who were not authorized to speak publicly, said that she was quick to anger at times and would yell at her subordinates in front of large groups. Through a spokesman, Ms. Sheinbaum declined to comment on the accusation.

Her defenders say some people merely reacted badly to a woman in charge.

“I know that in her government, sometimes people got offended or felt bad because she yelled at them,” said Marta Lamas, a longtime feminist activist who has been close to Ms. Sheinbaum and her team. “But if a man yells, it wouldn’t be an issue because culturally, it’s different.”

“People say it in a critical way: ‘She’s tough,’” Ms. Aragón said. “What do you want, someone soft in charge of the city?”

5. She is a true believer in Mr. López Obrador’s vision.

For years, Ms. Sheinbaum has tried to explain how she can be so in step with Mr. López Obrador while also being herself. The answer, she says, is simple: She genuinely believes in him.

In 2022, a radio host asked her a pointed question from a female listener: “Why don’t you choose to be a woman who governs with her own ideas? Why don’t you get out of AMLO’s circus?” she asked, using Mr. López Obrador’s nickname. “Why have the same rhetoric with the same words?”

Ms. Sheinbaum didn’t hesitate.

“If you think the same as another person, it’s not that you’re copying them; you just agree with the ideas,” she said. “You can’t deny what you believe.”

The food was good and the portions were generous. The service was just decent. The ambiance of the restaurant was really cool with lots of unique decorations and seating.

The waitress was obviously very stressed but the entire restaurant could hear her argue with the cooks. The cooks kept getting orders wrong and my mother's hamburger came out half an hour late. I could overhear one couple who had to leave because they were served a salad with cheese when they requested no cheese (allergies). To top it all off, my stomach hurt the entire next night and I vomited aggressively in the morning (I had a pork tenderloin sandwich). My sibling also had food poisoning and stayed up an hour and a half vomiting. If you go here, I wouldn't recommend eating at the diner. The gift shop was cute though.

Photo of B T.

TERRIBLE service -- over the top terrible -- and food made two of my kids sick. The diner itself is cute. The hostess and busboy were both very nice. The waitress provided horrible service, the orders were messed up, one plate severely delayed (part of which was a simple side salad). Waitress yelled at cooks (we could hear her very clearly), complained to coworkers while we were waiting, and just kept messing up. All of this speaks to horrible management.

Food very bland. I have had way better and can make a better Chicken fried steaks it over cook and very small for the price they had it list for corn bread was cold. The service was so so. The restaurant theme is different for sure it's like a 50-70s decor and their sitting I never seen it before. PLUS THEY CHARGE 3.89% IF YOU USE A CREDIT CARD. Businesses that charge that type of fee need to pay it themselves like they have for decades or lower their menu price a little.

It looked like a cool place, and it was, but that's what made the whole experience so much more disappointing. The woman who took our order kept gossiping, and yelling at the cooks (which we could hear, and it was very unprofessional). She gave the wrong dishes to people, messed up orders, and made others wait an extremely long time for a side salad...My mother had to wait longer than the rest of my family for her food. She ordered a hamburger with pickles and a salad. The burger came out dry (with no pickles) and the woman had completely forgot about the salad, something that should probably come out first because it's pretty easy. She had to be reminded to bring it. Later that night, however, my sister woke up in the middle of the night to throw up. Because she had food poisoning. It caught my brother in the morning, and they have both been miserable. The sad part is that there were older folks eating there, as well. Food poisoning could seriously harm them. Overall, it was a 0/10 would not recommend. But the old woman who seated us and the man who took our plates were cool.

Derailed dinner always comes though with good food and nice friendly service. Thanks.

This is an authentic roadside diner. Tons of neat memorabilia and decor. It's attached to a truck stop. Interesting seating areas that were themed. It was a fun experience. The burgers were pretty good. The milkshakes were awful though. The prices were a bit high - especially for the milkshakes. All in all it's a neat place to stop at least once if you're doing a road trip.

Adorable outside with the railroad crossing. Cute inside with so much to see. But, unfortunately, that's where the fun stops. The cornbread was dry and inedible. The fried chicken breast was also dry..but the gravy helped. Our service was great. Perhaps that was because no more than 5 people were in the place at any one time. But the biggest disappointment was the chocolate "shake". It was as thin as and tasted like chocolate milk. The diner is cute..but to be a good diner you need more than a cute gimmick..you need good food. Derailed Diner has a long way to go on that aspect. They've been "derailed".
