Jonathan Milan doubles up at Giro d’Italia

trek mtb team riders

Milan becomes the first sprinter to take two stages in this edition of La Corsa Rosa

With a stage win and two second-place finishes already to his name in this Giro, Jonathan Milan doubled up on his win tally by claiming Stage 11 of the Giro d’Italia. Serendipitously, the second stage victory coincides with the launch of the brand-new SRAM RED AXS groupset, which Lidl-Trek have been putting to good use throughout this Giro d’Italia.

Although Milan was the first to cross the line, the road to winning the stage started hours before, when Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier got to work at the head of the peloton, riding mile after mile to ensure the stage finished in a sprint.

I think today is just unbelievable what the guys did for me, like always they are believing in me and I have to say thanks from the bottom of my heart for this.

Jonny benefitted from the full support and confidence of the Lidl-Trek team, who believe the Italian sprinter is the fastest in the race. The Lidl-Trek train brought the Ciclamino giant to the front, and safely out of trouble, as the tension and speed rose into the final part of the stage.

At four kilometers to go, the peloton had to negotiate a tricky right hand bend with road furniture, but it went by without a problem whilst Jonny maintained a good position. As rival trains jostled for position across the road, Milan became detached from his leadout, but he remained calm, hitching himself onto the rear wheel of Tim Merlier. Jonny was able to kick out of the slipstream, come alongside Merlier, and smoothly pass him in time to get his hands in the air for his second win of this Giro.

By winning the stage, Milan extends his lead in the Points Competition to 73 points.

Reaction from the winner

“You know, it’s not just this 20 seconds of the sprint that makes me happy, or the victory in the end. It’s all the work that my guys did for me today, supporting me, bringing me to the crucial position for the sprint, this is what makes me happy, it makes a real time like we are. I think today is just unbelievable what the guys did for me, like always they are believing in me and I have to say thanks from the bottom of my heart for this. I’m just so happy to see this, and their happy faces. After the finish line I looked for them one by one to thank them because they were exceptional.

“It’s always tricky in the final, how to predict it and how to move. In the end I found myself on Merlier’s wheel, I think it was the perfect wheel. He started his sprint really strong but then I made mine and it went good. It was a super-fast sprint, especially because I have the fastest bike, along with the fast, new tires and groupset. It’s really special, last year I was always close but making some mistakes. I think the most important thing to do is learning from these mistakes and going further. We made it with the Team and I’m proud of this.

Race after race, I grew, I improved. I’ve learned to manage my efforts and to better withstand the efforts that the Giro imposes day after day. From last year to this year, then, there was a change of jersey that led me to have more riders to help me in the sprints. Strong, experienced riders, capable, like today, of putting me in the perfect conditions to win.

Today’s victory is a step forward for the ciclamino jersey. I have a good lead at the moment, but I absolutely must not take anything for granted. There are complicated stages coming up, I know I have to be ready where there is a chance to pick up points. And of course, to look for another victory.”

BIKE CHECK: Jonny Milan’s Giro Madone

A closer look at the Madone SLR that is capable of keeping up with the power of the Bull of Buja at this year's Giro d'Italia.

Close up with the new Trek Madone: Mads Pedersen's Tour de France bike

We take a closer look at the Trek-Segafredo rider's steed as the eagerly anticipated Trek Madone 2023 is finally revealed in Copenhagen

Trek-Segafredo Trek Madone at the Tour de France 2022

Teased as the "ultimate race bike" in the build-up to its release, Trek finally unveiled the new Madone at the Tour de France with several new features.

The most striking aspect of the design is a new IsoFlow seat tube technology that replaces the previous model's IsoSpeed system. The seat tube splits and forks outward to join the seat stays, resulting in an almost diamond-shape hole below the seat which screams out for attention.

So we took a closer look at Trek-Segafredo rider Mads Pedersen 's new bike to get to grips with the new upgrades.

The IsoFlow system not only adds compliance for a smoother ride, says Trek, but also brings gains in aerodynamics and weight-saving.

In fact Trek says the new Madone is 60 seconds per hour faster than the previous generation thanks to its new aero frame alongside a redesigned integrated handlebar and stem. The hoods on the handlebar are 3cm narrower than the drops which Trek says allows for an improved, more aero rider position.

The new Madone will come with Bontrager's Aeolus RSL 51 carbon tubeless-ready wheelset, but Pedersen's bike was fitted with deeper 62mm rims in Copenhagen.

It was also equipped with SRAM's Red eTap AXS 12-speed groupset.

The UNION Downhill Team Bike Check

This year we're proud to sponsor The UNION team in the UCI Downhill World Cup. Their mission is to help privateers and other riders who may not get the big team sponsorships to get the support they need to grow.

The team is partnered with great brands, including the likes of Trek and Rockshox. We've asked for some insights from the team owner Joe Bowman on bike setup, especially as it relates to each rider.

Frame - Trek Session

"The team is on a stock frame, ranging in sizes. Frida and Ellie are on an R1, Lachie an R2, and our tallest rider Chris is on an R3. Frida and Lachie both run -1 degree headsets currently. We play with the 20/25% progression depending on the track too. Trek has done these with custom paint from their in-house Project One department."

trek mtb team riders

Fork - RockShox Boxxer Ultimate

"There's a range of settings per each rider, but generally, we use minimal tokens. Instead we work with the RockShox tech guys to find the balance in damping between small bump sensitivity and the support needed for the huge hits."

"Hauser specifically runs a soft fork and stiff shock for his weight/height because he rides very off the back. He has a trials moto influence, and is very heavy on the rear of the bike ."

Shock - RockShox Blackbox Coil

"No details available right now. Works mint!"

"Frida can custom shim her own shocks because she's rad [specifically she's a mechanical engineering PHD student], so she is running a crazy amount of compression damping and a custom rebound tune.

Drivetrain - Full Sram XO

"We use the mechanical XO drivetrain, with 165mm cranks and 34 teeth chainrings all round. Classic/flawless."

Brakes - SRAM Maven and Code Ultimate

"We're split between the Maven's and Code ultimates. Right now Ellie and Chris are on Maven's, with Frida and Lachie on codes. I imagine they will all switch to Mavens on steeper/longer tracks like Val Di Sole. They all drop from 220mm to 200mm rotors when going to the Mavens."

trek mtb team riders

Cockpit - Deity Brendog Signature

"The team uses the Brendog alloy bar all round. Widths range from 750mm to the full 800mm. All on 50mm Deity stems."

Seat/Saddle - Deity I-Beam

Pedals - crankbrothers mallet dh.

"All riders are on the Crankbrothers Mallet DH pedals. Lachie runs no pins, and opposite cleats for extra float."

trek mtb team riders

Wheels - ENVE Dark 6 Prototype Rims

"The team has been really stoked on these so far, the ride feel is awesome. Also the rim strip has already saved us on a couple occasions!"

Tyres - Maxxis DHR2 and Assegai

"The team runs the DHR2 2.4" in the rear and the Assegai 2.5" in front, both in MaxxGrip. No inserts. We're looking forward to getting some of the High Roller 3's that are coming soon. Looks like a great intermediate. When it gets wet we're on the 2.4 Shorty2 all round. Can't beat Maxxis still."

Best: Specialized

Specialized is a major player in the high-end bicycle market and has well deserved its position as a perennial favorite among amateurs and professionals alike. Since 1974, Specialized has been forging a unique path as an innovator for cyclists, by cyclists. The sport of mountain biking as we know and love it today was still in its infancy during the 1970s, but vision and a love for cycling drove Specialized to introduce the first production mountain bike with the Stumpjumper in 1981.

The brand's passion for pushing the envelope has not abated in the intervening decades, and today, the range includes everything from cross-country (XC) hardtails to long-travel, full-suspension downhill racers and from entry-level options through to elite-level, competition-ready machines that bear the S-Works mark. Even the Stumpjumper has not escaped the Specialized stable.

The latest iteration of this time-honored machine improves upon generations of geometry-tweaking to give riders stability and control while ripping aggressive trails in any condition. New technology has not evaded the Specialized team either, with new e-bike offerings incorporating proprietary e-drive motors tuned to match the riding style of the bike they are mounted in.

It's safe to say that innovation and development will be a staple of Specialized for years to come.

Trek had remarkably humble beginnings for such a major force in the bicycle world. In the mid-1970s, the Trek bicycle company was formed over a few drinks in a quiet Wisconsin bar, and it has gone from strength to strength ever since.

As the sport of mountain biking matured following its introduction into the Olympics in 1996 at Atlanta, Trek grew and developed its off-road offerings. This culminated with the establishment of the 'C3 Project' and the 'Trek Factory Racing Team' in the 2010s. Through close access to high-end racing and a wise investment in research and development, Trek has built a comprehensive mountain bike catalog with everything to suit first-time novices up to seasoned professionals.

A notable example of this innovation and design is the Fuel EX, a dual-suspension, singletrack legend. The latest version has been updated and improved in almost every way, from longer suspension travel to extended frame geometry. The incremental evolution in frame design makes the sixth-generation Fuel EX more stable at speed without compromising agility and rider control. Trek even managed to fit a hidden storage compartment in the down tube.

Bold new bike tech has not escaped the off-roading range either. The company has incorporated the latest e-drive motors into its offerings, from speed-focused hardtails to long-travel trail bikes. Trek looks set to continue its quest to push the limits of the mountain bike world for years to come.

It sounds a bit like an April Fools' joke, but from its humble beginnings on April 1, 1981, Ibis evolved into a legitimate name in the mountain bike world.

Founder Scot Nicol initially got to work learning the frame-building craft alongside the pioneers of the mountain biking movement. This technical apprenticeship, combined with a deep passion for ripping mountain trails, has created a trusted and respected brand for mountain bikers, by mountain bikers.

As you might expect from a smaller manufacturer, the Ibis mountain bike catalog is concentrated into only a handful of models, but this modest lineup packs a mighty punch. The range covers its bases well with offerings for gravel riders through to enduro racers and down-hill e-bikes built for rough terrain .

The Ibis Rimpo V2S has garnered praise from the mountain bike community and is perhaps the best example of the company's dedication to quality and design. The V2S is the latest iteration of this famed trail bike and exemplifies Ibis' commitment to continued design development. Thanks to a steep seat-tube angle and relaxed steering geometry, the Rimpo has been made more stable while ripping and improves comfort and control when ascending.

Although a much larger operation than in its early years, Ibis today remains as committed as ever to developing the next generation of machines for serious mountain bikers.

Best: Revel

Headquartered in Carbondale, Colorado, Revel is a unique newcomer that is making waves in the mountain bike world. From its community-focused mindset to its group of hardcore riders and bike creators, Revel is an innovative company with bikes to match.

And how could they not innovate? The company's location was chosen to provide the Revel team of climbers, skiers, and mountain bikers with a convenient backyard. To make the most of this epic playground, Revel is dedicated to "engineer and build the absolute best bikes in the world."

This passion and drive are most clearly on display in the new Rascal, a do-it-all beast packing the latest tech. The proprietary CBF (which stands for Canfield Balanced Formula, we'll have you know) focuses the peddle forces around the top of the chainring. This maximizes pedaling efficiency and provides for playful suspension travel. This, combined with a shorter wheelbase for precise handling, has caused a stir in the mountain bike world.

Revel has also partnered with engineers to develop Fusion-Fiber which promises to be stronger and lighter than conventional carbon fiber as well as reduce its environmental impact. With such a drive for mountain bike innovation and so many gnarly trails to test their creations, we expect Revel to further its impact in the years to come.

Best: Santa Cruz/Juliana

Founded in 1993 in a small garage in Santa Cruz, California, the brand quickly made a name for itself in mountain biking. From the start, Santa Cruz sought to upset the norms with bikes that were stronger, more agile, more responsive, and meet the real needs of riders across different terrains.

Santa Cruz's journey of product evolution is highlighted by its diverse range of high-performance bikes, including the iconic V10 and the versatile Bronson. With the introduction of Juliana, a line dedicated solely to women cyclists, the company has shown its dedication to inclusion. These bikes are all engineered specifically for women's ergonomics but with the same high-quality materials and advanced features as the rest of the Santa Cruz lineup.

Santa Cruz is a leader in mountain bike technology, having developed the Virtual Pivot Point (VPP) suspension. This delivers new, unparalleled shock absorption and smoother handling than ever before, allowing a rider to take control of rough descents or aggressive hills easily. At the same time, carbon fiber is integrated into any of their frame designs so that every bike can achieve optimal strength, stiffness, and lightness.

The company invests heavily in research and development, with ongoing projects focusing on enhancing material science and propulsion techniques to offer even lighter, faster, and more environmentally friendly bikes. As mountain biking evolves, Santa Cruz is poised not just to react, but to lead, promising exciting advancements that will redefine the industry.

Best: Giant/Liv

Anyone in the bicycle world will be familiar with Giant. The behemoth from Taiwan has been producing these much-loved machines since 1972 and has been pushing the limits of carbon fiber bicycle production since 1987.

As a cutting-edge developer, it sponsored major road cycling teams and moved into the mountain bike sphere in 1995. In 2008, Giant formed the Liv brand, a dedicated women-focused bike label that is run by women, for women. Giant and Liv's catalogs have always been vast, covering everything from your first 12-inch peddler found under the Christmas tree to your competition-ready race bike in any category.

With such a long history of innovation and quality production, it's no wonder that Giant and Liv are such power-houses in the mountain bike game. The Liv Intrigue X puts Liv's development strength on full display. The use of lightweight construction without compromising strength or geometry is coupled with an impressive SyncDrive motor to make for a tech-filled trail rider.

The Giant label has an equally impressive offering in the Trance X. This trail bike uses a progressive suspension system paired with industry-leading RockShox units to give 135-millimeter rear travel and 150 millimeters at the front without conceding control or peddling efficiency. With such a customer-focused design ethos, the next generations of Giant and Liv bikes promise exciting innovation.

Born from a deep love of nature and mountain biking, Kona was founded in 1988 with one guiding principle: build bikes that could withstand the demanding and diverse terrains of the Pacific Northwest. From the beginning, Kona was about building a bike culture that put the rider first.

Kona's passion for mountain biking continued beyond just making innovative bikes. Its range of bikes is impressive, known particularly for its multi-award-winning hardtail bikes. From the classic Cinder Cone to the modern-day Process series, Kona's lineup has blossomed to encompass each model developed expressly with rider feedback and riding conditions in mind.

The Kona Process (in its many iterations) is possibly the best example of how innovation and understanding of riders' needs come together perfectly in Kona's lineup. The X-CR designation is noted for its high-speed-focused geometry that allows for a forgiving ride while also being lively and easy to control. Also included in this range is the Process X-DH which offers high-level downhill racing control and feel but is paired with components that allow it to sit at a more amateur price point.

Kona still focuses on the ultimate high-end bikes and maintains the Kona Factory Team, which races top-level competitions that push the company's Kona machines to the limit.

Yeti has become synonymous with mountain biking and is the brand of choice for those who want a sturdy, precise ride. It particularly appeals to serious mountain bike enthusiasts and professional racers.

Yeti hit the mountain bike scene in 1985, producing custom machines for the still-fledgling mountain bike race scene. This close relationship with mountain biking did not only consist of bike building; they also formed an impressive race team. This link between the race world and design development has culminated in the current lineup of eight performance-focused bikes to suit different riding styles and terrain demands.

The SB120 is Yeti's answer for people who want a bike that can do it all. This new model was released in 2022 and shows off the brand's innovative features and attention to detail. The travel numbers are combined with a diverse parts offering from component partner SRAM. Adding to the SB120's high-quality build is Yeti's proprietary suspension system.

Yeti developed the innovative Switch Infinity suspension system designed to optimize riding stability and shock absorption over diverse terrains. This system is an example of Yeti's technical excellence and rider-centric design. Yeti also continues to refine its bikes' frame geometry while integrating high-quality materials to achieve an optimal balance of lightweight strength and performance.

Bike Brands to Avoid

When it comes to mountain biking, there's an entire world out there that's all its own, where performance and durability are the name of the game. However, a few brands focus on the mass market, which is more suited for the casual biker. Here's a rundown of several brands that might not meet the expectations of more serious riders.

Originally big in the BMX scene, Mongoose has expanded into mountain biking. While they maintain a nostalgic appeal, many of their models now populate department store aisles, designed with cost rather than performance in mind.

A historically solid brand, Schwinn now makes bicycles with highly variable quality. The company sells some high-quality models good for serious mountain biking, but also sells through department stores, which tend to feature their budget lines — no-frills machines lacking durability or performance features for serious mountain biking.

Next bikes are among the cheapest, mostly found in department stores. These bikes are meant for occasional leisure riding and likely can't withstand the tough conditions imposed on mountain bikes. The costs are cheap at the expense of quality and poor performance, which are most important in extreme mountain biking.

For serious mountain bikers, choosing the right bike is everything. You need a brand that can withstand the sport's challenges and keep you safe while you tackle the trails. It's one of the most important decisions you'll make.

How did we choose these brands?

With so many bike brands on offer and so many individual bicycle options to choose from, it's important to consider a few key points when deciding which ones stand out and which are less than inspiring.

When formulating our list, we considered many important factors to reach a consensus. We looked for brands with a passion for innovation that push the boundaries of what's possible in mountain biking because they drive our sport forward.

Likewise, we looked for brands with a versatile catalog that showed an understanding of the market and the demands of riders. Importantly we took into account the feedback of customers as well as brand reputation, after all, who knows the bikes better than those who go out and ride them every day?

A brand's history and legacy can influence its expertise in making the best mountain bikes on the market. Each brand's journey and involvement in the community were also taken into account in our selection. While not the primary focus, we also considered the price range and accessibility of these bikes.

When choosing a mountain bike, it's essential to consider your specific needs, budget, and the type of riding you plan to do. Visiting local bike shops, testing different models, and doing thorough research will help you find the best mountain bike for your adventures.

Changing the world one bike at a time - Road , Mountain , Hybrid and Electric bikes Born in a barn. The Trek story began in 1976 in a southern Wisconsin barn in the township of Waterloo. Founded by John Burke and Bevil Hogg, this pair of visionaries set out to make a business of building bikes of extraordinary artistry. There were five employees on the payroll when the barn doors opened in 1976. In its first year, Trek produced 904 touring frames. Steel tubing, lugged and silver-brazed, handcrafted and hand-painted with care. A culture of craftsmanship and rebellion was fostered in the young American upstart. Every bend and every weld was charged with purpose, as each meticulously constructed frame broke the convention that all great bikes must come from Europe. Trek was out to change minds. Today, Trek's headquarters is a mile up the road from the original barn, in a much larger facility. Although Trek has outgrown the barn, every bike they make is a testament to Trek's founding principles. RESULTS: Murray and Courdurier Win Bielsko-Biała EDR World Cup

Courdurier edges out harnden in thriller while murray breaks polish hearts at the uci enduro world cup in bielsko-biała..

Profile picture for user iceman2058

T he WHOOP UCI Mountain Bike World Series made its Polish debut with the opening race of this weekend’s Bielsko-Biała UCI World Cups. Enduro got the action underway at the Beskid Mountain’s venue, and athletes were tasked with five technical, twisting stages that took in 36.5km of trails and 2,074m of descent. Unlike last weekend’s race in Finale Outdoor Region, it would be a new experience for most riders who would have to adapt quickly and learn fast on the constantly changing course.

trek mtb team riders

STAGE 1: KAMIENIOŁOM

The opener saw riders take on Kamieniołom, a 2km bike park stage that featured one black and two red-grade trails and 275m of descent on a technical, rocky course. The local crowd was out in full force, experiencing professional riders on their home trails for the first time.

Cannondale’s Ella Conolly was the first to seize the initiative in the women’s field, the British rider clocking a 4:42 to take an early lead. It could have been a completely different story had Isabeau Courdurier (Lapierre Zipp Collective) not crashed, the reigning overall champion having regained her composure to limit her loses to just 2.8 seconds. Last week’s UCI Enduro World Cup winner, Harriet Harnden (Trek Factory Racing Gravity) showed that her result in Finale was no fluke, finishing third, 4.2 seconds down on Conolly.

Only a second could split the top four in the men’s competition, Richie Rude (Yeti/Fox Factory Race Team) coming out on top and carrying some solid form after his win last weekend. Jack Moir (YT Mob) was just 0.134 seconds behind the American – the Australian fully recovered after an injury that ruled him out in Finale. The biggest cheer of the stage though went to Lukasik Slawomir (Yeti/Fox Factory Race Team) – a partisan home crowd willing him on to improve on fifth last time out.

Early casualties on stage one included Dimitri Tordo (Commencal Enduro Project), who was left battered, bruised and in 42nd place, and Martin Maes (Orbea Fox Factory), who was forced to abandon after he was unable to fix a puncture that he suffered at the bottom of the stage.

Midway through saw the first drops of rain, which would go on to play a crucial role in the rest of the race.

trek mtb team riders

STAGE 2: DZIABAR

The rain had come down hard by the time riders reached the second and longest stage of the day – a 3.7km trail with 524m of descent – and it caused carnage, with Noga Korem, Harnden, Courdurier and Morganne Charre (Pivot Factory Racing) all crashing. It became about damage limitation, and Chloe Taylor managed her ride the best – a 7:41 enough to send her from eighth to first. Estelle Charles (Specialized Enduro Team) finished the stage second, more than 12 seconds back on the Brit on the stage, while Courdurier showed her championship-winning resilience to rescue third.

The treacherous conditions continued during the men’s tackling of the stage, but the racing remained just as tight – Charles Murray (Specialized Enduro Team) taking the stage win and overcoming Richie Rude’s stage one advantage to lead the American by 0.4 seconds.

STAGE 3: DEBOWIEC

The crashes continued as the riders rolled into Debowiec, a 2.5km stage with 336m descent, and early race leader Conolly, Christian Textor (YT Mob) and Jack Menzies (Canyon CLLCTV Factory Enduro Team) all suffered offs as the persistent rain shifted the terrain under the tyres.

trek mtb team riders

Harnden hung on to take her first stage win of the day, but it was only enough to take last week’s UCI World Cup winner up to second place. It was Courdurier who sat at the top of the pile, three-hundredths of a second faster overall, while Taylor found herself in third, 0.94 seconds back. With two stages remaining, it was clear that we were looking at one of our winners, and it would probably come down to who could stay upright.

After a disappointing second stage (where he went eighth fastest), Slawomir put all his local knowledge to use in stage three, recording the fastest time (a 4:50) to leapfrog Moir and Jesse Melamed (Canyon CLLCTV Factory Enduro Team) into third place. Above him sat Rude and Murray, but the Polish rider looked calm and focused in the chaotic conditions.

STAGE 4: CYGAN

Although significantly shorter than last weekend’s race overall, the long liaison gave riders a chance to reset and take stock between Debowiec and Cygan. But they’d need to be switched on in the start gate. Littered with roots and other natural obstacles, the flowing, winding 2.5km stage would be even more difficult after the rain, and would come down to line choice.

Harnden showed that she thrives in these conditions, recording her second consecutive stage win to take a 2.2-second lead over Courdurier going into the final stage. The Frenchwoman was the only elite woman to take a particular high line on the stage, but it wasn’t enough to outride the 23-year-old Brit. Taylor was still hanging on in third, 3.6 seconds back, with the trio opening a significant gap on the rest of the field.

It was the same story in the men’s, Slawomir making it back-to-back stage wins, but it was Murray who still had the advantage – the New Zealander making a massive save to avoid a washout and finish the stage with a 2.7-second lead intact.

STAGE 5: DH+

If the tension wasn’t already high enough, a red flag meant riders were forced to wait before they could get underway with the final stage, DH+ – a steep, stony, uneven trail including 283m of descent in just 1.8km.

Unlike last week, where Harnden had enough of an advantage to take it easy on the final stage, the gloves were off in Bielsko-Biała, and riders threw caution to the wind. It was Courdurier who landed the winning blow, the experienced rider showing why she won four of last season’s seven UCI Enduro World Cups and improving on her second place in Finale. It wasn’t to be two-from-two for Harnden, who lost more than two seconds to Courdurier on the stage to finish just 0.236 seconds behind in the overall, while Taylor settled for third, Charles fourth and Conolly fifth.

Speaking after the race, Isabeau Courdurier said: “It’s quite crazy because it’s redemption from this morning where I struggled so much and couldn’t ride like I wanted to. It was a real surprise because I didn’t look at the time and I thought I was quite far away. In the end, it’s so tight, it’s basically like finishing the race at the exact same point after going through so many slippery roots, technical bits, and flat sections. I have no idea how we did this. I’m super happy about it.”

The men’s race would finish even closer, and it would be heartbreak for Slawomir, who won his third straight stage but missed out on his first UCI Enduro World Cup win by 0.095 seconds. Murray was the man to break the local’s hearts, retaining the position he’d held since stage two and just doing enough with his fourth place on the final stage to take his first UCI Enduro World Cup. Last year’s overall champion Rude would go second fastest on the stage to finish third overall, with Moir (4th) and Melamed (5th) completing the podium.

Speaking after the race, Charles Murray said: “Managing to keep it upright was the main thing – pedal where I could but just be smart because there were so many slippery roots out there. Last week, I was a bit surprised because you never know where your form is coming into the season and then to back it up with the win was too good to be true”.

Between field tests and product launches, our team of six testers traveled to a dozen locations spread across the United States and Canada in the pursuit of great-fitting mountain-bike kits. We tested men’s mountain-bike apparel in the sticky heat of the Appalachian mountains, the temperate rainforests of the Pacific Northwest, and the arid desert Southwest. These varied climates showcased the strengths and weaknesses of the clothing we wore.

7mesh Cache Jacket

7mesh Cache Jacket

$300 at 7mesh

Sizing: XS-XXL

Pros and Cons ⊕ Excellent waterproofing for rainy day rides ⊕ No PFCs PFAS ⊗ Need to size up ⊗ Pricey

This is the jacket we reached for on days when we knew the forecast wasn’t in our favor, but we weren’t about to let a bit of precipitation ruin our ride. The Cache Jacket from 7mesh is a versatile trail companion that adapts seamlessly to unpredictable weather conditions. Crafted with a blend of two and three-layer fabrics that the company calls Airmap, this jacket provides water resistance precisely where needed (on the chest and back) while optimizing breathability on the arms and sides. The Cache is also free from PFC and PFAS coatings, also known as forever chemicals.

The Cache has a tailored fit, so we never felt like it was flapping around when speeding down the trail. While this jacket is on the slimmer side—and we advise sizing up if you frequently fall between sizes—there’s enough room to layer underneath. The clean silhouette also allows it to double as a casual jacket. Our testers valued this versatility, making the steep price tag more palatable. We’d happily use it for shoulder season trail runs and rainy walks to the coffee shop when the trails are too muddy to ride.

Velocio Delta Trail Jersey

Velocio Delta Trail Jersey

$79 at Velocio

Sizing: XS-4XL

Pros and Cons ⊕ Very cooling in extremely hot weather ⊗ You can’t put it in the dryer after washing

The Delta Trail Jersey is a welcome trail companion for hot weather riding. We did our best to ensure it could keep us cool despite sweltering temperatures—we don’t recommend riding in Moab on a mid-summer afternoon. Still, we took our chances on the scorching slickrock to ensure this jersey delivered the goods.

Velocio offers this top in a traditional short-sleeved jersey as well as a long-sleeve version for added sun protection. We wholeheartedly recommend both options. The Polartec Delta fabric is constructed from a blend of recycled polyester and Tencel yarns with a tiny grid pattern that elevates the material from the skin’s surface. The result is an airy feel and rapid moisture wicking, even in the hottest conditions.

Fox Flexair Ascent Shorts

Fox Flexair Ascent Shorts

$120 at Backcountry $120 at Amazon

Sizing: 28-40

Pros and Cons ⊕ Ideal fit: slim, but wide range of motion ⊗ Inseam is too short to ride comfortably with kneepads

The FlexAir Ascent Shorts stood out for their comfort and breathability, making them perfect for long, hot days. Though these shorts blur the lines between gravel and cross-country, they are perfect for both. With a mere 9.75-inch inseam, the Fox Flexair shorts are designed for those who prefer riding without knee pads and prioritize freedom of movement. “Race baggies” is how one of our testers described these slim-fitting shorts. That description was spot on since we tested them at the grueling seven-day BC Bike Race.

In terms of features, Fox uses its proven Race-Ratchet waist closure to adjust fit. A single zippered side pocket is large enough to carry a smartphone or energy bar. If you don’t want to don a complete Lycra kit but also don’t want to look like you’re heading to the bike park, these shorts should do the trick.

Darn Tough Element Micro Crew Socks

Darn Tough Element Micro Crew Socks

$22 at Darn Tough $22 at Amazon

Pros and Cons ⊕ Wide range of sizing ⊕ Comes with an unconditional lifetime guarantee ⊗ Might replace the rest of the socks in your drawer

Technically, Darn Tough’s Element Crew socks are designed for running, but we found them to be excellent mountain-bike socks. The merino wool and nylon blend is quick-drying, breathable, and odor-resistant—all qualities we look for in cycling socks. The crew height, with an average of 8.5 inches from heel to cuff (depending on the size), provides ankle protection and prevents dirt ingress. Darn Tough’s claim to fame is that all its socks are manufactured in Vermont and backed by an unconditional lifetime guarantee.

Pearl Izumi Summit Barrier Jacket

Pearl Izumi Summit Barrier Jacket

$85 at REI $85 at Backcountry

Sizing: S-XXL

Pros and Cons ⊕ Extremely packable ⊕ More affordable than other jackets we tested ⊗ Full-length zipper makes it bulkier than other jackets

Whether we’re riding through the lush forests of the Pacific Northwest or traversing alpine slopes in the Rocky Mountains, a packable shell is an essential part of kit we bring on any ride where capricious weather is on tap. The Summit Barrier Jacket is a minimalist “just in case” outer layer we seldom left home without. Testers tucked it into hip packs and even stowed it inside the downtubes of mountain bikes with in-frame storage as an insurance policy against wind and rain.

Admittedly, this jacket’s full-length zipper adds a bit of weight and bulk compared to partial-zip competitors, but it also makes this emergency shell easier to pull on in a hurry. We also love that Pearl Izumi uses a two-way zipper that makes it easier for riders to manage heat buildup while riding.

Rapha Trail Gore-Tex Pants

Rapha Trail Gore-Tex Pants

$325 at Rapha

Pros and Cons ⊕ Extra space for kneepads ⊕ Super comfortable and breathable ⊗ Pricey

Since Rapha ventured off the pavement and onto the dirt a few years ago, the fit and quality of its mountain-bike apparel has consistently impressed our testers. We also respect the company’s commitment to keeping its garments in use and out of landfills by giving buyers fabric swatches for DIY repairs.

Unless you live and ride exclusively in the desert, a quality pair of rain pants is worth the investment, and Rapha’s Trail Gore-Tex Pants live up to the hype. They’re comfortable and more breathable than rain pants we tested from other brands. The Trail Gore-Tex Pants incorporate design elements of Rapha’s fair weather Trail Pants with weather-resistant Gore-Tex fabric, fully taped seams, and a durable water-repellent DWR finish.

On the trail, we appreciated the cam straps at the waist to adjust the fit quickly and the reinforced knees with ample space for kneepads—a smart feature for pants designed to keep you dry when riding slick and slimy singletrack.

When shopping for mountain-bike apparel, consider where and how you ride. If, for example, you spend most of your time in a bike park, focus on durability and protection first and breathability second. On the other hand, if you’re committed to logging big miles in the backcountry, lightweight, wicking fabrics are critical to comfort.

The fit of mountain-bike apparel varies depending on the collective fashion sense of the outdoor industry. Right now, slimmer-fitting garments are in, which makes it all the more important to try before you buy.

Your local bike shop should have plenty of options to choose from, and the pros can help you determine which pieces are best for your local climate. Also consider buying from a used gear shop—with apparel, you don’t need to worry as much about safety, and you can easily save money from pre-loved garments.

  • Number of testers: 6
  • Number of products tested: 70
  • Number of miles ridden: 2 percent of the distance to the moon
  • Number of arguments about riding with or without a chamois: 3

Our search for the best men’s mountain-bike apparel focused on a few key areas. First and foremost, we looked for pieces that were comfortable, breathable, and could survive a tumble through the dirt. We also sought out apparel made with recycled materials, that eschewed forever chemicals, and could be repaired by the end user. Simplicity was a very important factor for our team when looking for the perfect products.

Six testers took out 70 products from the Appalachian mountains to the Pacific Northwest, and in the Southwest regions of the United States. This allowed us to test apparel in extremely wet and dry, hot conditions. Apparel we tested endured downpours in the rainforest and scorching days in the desert, and our final six pieces handled those conditions the best.

Giro d'Italia

Visma-lease a bike confirms there's no covid on its bus after fourth abandon in the team as tension mounts over illness in the peloton..

Heading out the door? Read this article on the new Outside+ app available now on iOS devices for members! >","name":"in-content-cta","type":"link"}}'>Download the app .

Twenty-one and counting.

No, that’s not the number of leader’s jerseys Tadej Pogačar has earned so far at this Giro d’Italia , but the number of riders to have exited the race as the corsa rosa rolls into its second half Thursday morning.

Close to half of the 21 abandons so far are due to snuffles, sickness, or symptoms of virus.

Only 155 riders will roll out of Martinsicuro for stage 12 on Thursday as tension mounts that a virus – or even COVID – is rampaging through the peloton.

“It’s going through the pack at the moment. There’s a lot of coughing, sniffling and sniffling,” Visma-Lease a Bike director Marc Reef told Het Laatste Nieuws earlier this week. “It is also going on with other teams. We have no choice but to remain cautious.”

Some onlookers sniggered when news that Pogačar had a stuffy nose made headlines this weekend.

Yet since the rest day Monday, six riders abandoned the race with illness, most notably Visma-Lease a Bike’s tag-team captains Cian Uijtdebroeks and Olav Kooij.

Visma-Lease a Bike DS Reef believed earlier this week his team was through the worst of any illness woes.

Yet after the abandon of Uijtdebroeks with 39-degree C (102-degree F) fever on Wednesday, the once unstoppable Dutch division is now down to four riders.

Pogačar: ‘There were a lot of guys coughing and snorting’

Giro d'Italia

Concern is rippling through the bunch that a virus is taking a ride through the Italian tour.

“I’ve seen a lot of guys getting sick, but I’m getting better. I’m almost OK,” Pogačar said after the stage Thursday. “In the peloton on the day before the rest day, there were a lot of guys coughing and snorting, so I hope they are all right.”

Ten of the Giro’s 21 exits after 11 days of racing are due to sickness, whether that be an unnamed viral infection, G.I issue, or something else [ see breakdown below ].

Uijtdebroeks’ exit Wednesday – the fourth at this Giro d’Italia for the disaster-stalked Visma-Lease a Bike of 2024 – dropped the “C” word into the conversation.

Team officials insisted the dark old days of the COVID era were not unwinding within the team’s black and yellow hive of “Killer Bees”.

“There is certainly no question of corona within our team,” a Visma-Lease a Bike spokesperson told WielerFlits on Wednesday morning. “We still apply the same strict corona protocol as in recent years, with everyone in the team being tested every day.”

So is COVID running through the Giro or what? https://t.co/yHKCsRMsE4 — A better world is possible (@parentingaspath) May 15, 2024

Grand tour racing shows no mercy

It’s not unusual for sickness – whether COVID or not – to stalk race-weary riders through grand tours.

For context, Pro Cycling Stats states that 20 riders in total left last year’s Giro d’Italia due to illness of some sort – including pink jersey-wearing, COVID-riddled Remco Evenepoel.

Team nutritionists and medics dovetail to support their riders’ health with daily check-ins and dietary design.

Yet excess fatigue in whippet-thin riders inevitably beats down immune systems. Racers easily fall foul of the spittle, dirt, and sniffles that fly around a tight-packed peloton.

Pogačar’s armor has rarely been breached by sickness or injury in his near-unblemished career. His crash at Liège-Bastogne-Liège last spring is the only notable blip.

Only Wednesday, the pink-suited Slovenian was able to evade a crash in the charging pack before Jonathan Milan punched to stage 11 victory.

Still very much in Rosa #GirodItalia | @TamauPogi pic.twitter.com/zA5icsR7T9 — Giro d’Italia (@giroditalia) May 15, 2024

It’s now starting to look like Pogačar’s priority at this Giro won’t only be the defence of his 2:40 GC lead over Dani Martínez and Geraint Thomas. Fending off the Giro’s malady could prove just as crucial to his quest to win the maglia rosa on debut and follow Marco Pantani in completing the double at the Tour de France this July.

So don’t be surprised in the back-half of this race if Pogačar wearing a face mask captures as much attention as his return to a two-tone skinsuit.

Fines and time penalties Giro d'Italia 2024 | Mortirolo stage was mind-boggling penalties frenzy!

D isposing of waste, prohibited positions on the bike, sticky bottles, or a shoulder push leading up to a bunch sprint – anything can happen during a race, especially in the Giro d'Italia, which consists of 21 stages. In this overview, IDLProCycling.com keeps track of the various violations and their corresponding penalties for you!

A rider can receive a penalty from the jury for various reasons. One common reason is discarding food and bottles. Special zones are designated on the course for this purpose. If a rider still discards waste outside of these zones, they (or the responsible team leader) can be fined for it.

In addition, fines are often handed out for incidents involving 'sticky bottles'. This is when the rider saves energy by allowing themselves to be towed by the team car when receiving a bottle. Nowadays, riders also have to be mindful of their position on the bike. Positions such as the time trial position (placing wrists over the middle of the handlebars) during a stage and the 'super-tuck' (sitting on the top tube during a descent) have not been allowed by the jury for several years now. The UCI is responsible for this.

Fines are not the only penalty that the jury can impose. They can also issue time penalties or deduct points in secondary classifications such as the points classification or the mountain jersey. A rider's UCI ranking points are not safe in the event of serious or repeated violations either. The severity of the violation, or the frequency of violations within a stage, also leads to a heavier penalty. The ultimate penalty would be disqualification, although this rarely happens in practice.

Fines and time penalties Giro d'Italia 2024

Even stage fifteen – the queen stage over the Mortirolo – did not go by without a bunch of fines being issued. Andrea Piccolo (EF Education-EasyPost) must pay 200 Swiss francs for taking food at an unauthorized location. The EF team director on duty, former pro Tejay van Garderen, receives a fine of 500 Swiss francs for the same infraction.

Team directors Enrico Gasparotto (BORA-hansgrohe), René Andrle (Israel-Premier Tech), Davide Bramati (Soudal Quick-Step) and Gorazd Stangelj (Bahrain Victorious) also received fines related to food. These managers were fined 200 Swiss francs each for not adhering to nutrition-focused rules during the race.

And these were not even the only fines that were handed out to the team directors, as many were also ticketed for incorrect maneuvers with the team cars. This includes Zakkari Dempster (INEOS Grenadiers), Mickael Leveau (Arkéa-B&B Hotels), Gasparotto, Stephane Goubert (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) and Bramati. Each of them received a fine of 500 Swiss francs. Pim Ligthart also received a fine, but his was 200 francs for not following instructions or directions imposed by the organizers.

We close the mountain stage, which included nearly 6,000 meters of elevation gain, with Giulio Pellizzari of Bardiani, who was fined 500 Swiss francs and docked 25 UCI points for discarding plastic outside the designated zones.

Yes, you heard that right, we have a second one, ladies and gentlemen! Stage 14 was the second stage of this Giro without any penalties or fines.

In the thirteenth stage, two fines were dished out. Juan Pedro López of Lidl-Trek was fined 500 Swiss francs for discarding waste in a prohibited area and will also see 25 UCI points deducted. An INEOS team manager received a 500 Swiss franc fine for the same offense, as one of his riders could not be identified.

Stage twelve was another stage that didn't go by without fines being imposed. Martin Marcellusi (Bardiani) has to pay 200 Swiss francs for receiving food in a prohibited area. The Bardiani team manager on duty, Alessandro Donati, even gets a 500 Swiss franc fine for this.

Team managers Gianni Meersman and Addy Engels, of Alpecin-Deceuninck and Visma | Lease a Bike respectively, also received food-related fines. Both ex-pros were fined 200 Swiss francs for not complying with nutritional rules during the race.

On Thursday, May 16, several riders also discarded waste in unauthorized areas. We're talking about Michael Valgren (EF Education-EasyPost) and Benjamin Thomas (Cofidis). Both men have to pay a 500 Swiss franc fine and 25 UCI points will be deducted from their 'total score'.

We conclude this stage with Enrico Gasparotto of BORA-hansgrohe. The two-time Amstel Gold Race winner, now a team manager, receives a 500 Swiss franc fine for discarding waste in a prohibited zone. It's essentially the same infraction as Valgren and Thomas, but since the BORA-hansgrohe rider in question was not identified, the fine went to Gasparotto.

Despite the lack of much hostility, some riders were caught out during the eleventh stage. Tim Merlier was demoted to 89th place just after the finish line for a clumsy maneuver involving Juan Sebastian Molano, received a fine of 500 Swiss francs, and additionally a twelve-point deduction in the points classification. However, the Belgian rider was not the only one who showed his worse side in the sprint. Laurence Pithie (Groupama-FDJ) was also fined 500 Swiss francs and received a 25-point reduction in UCI points for "inappropriate behavior".

Andrea Piccolo (EF Education-EasyPost) and Harrison Wood (Cofidis) were also fined 200 Swiss francs each for "improper or inappropriate behavior", while Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck) had to transfer 500 francs to the jury's bank account for disposing of waste where it was not allowed. He also received a 25-point reduction in UCI points.

Finally, a number of team leaders also behaved improperly. Zakkari Dempster (INEOS Grenadiers) was fined 500 Swiss francs for "a violation of the rules regarding team car movements during the race". Matteo Tosatto of Tudor was ultimately fined 200 Swiss francs for not complying with a certain article regarding provisioning.

Even after the rest day, the UCI had quite a few tickets to issue. Riders Esteban Chaves (EF, Matti Breschel), Luke Plapp (Jayco AlUla, David McPartland) and Francisco Munoz (Polti-Kometa, Stefano Zanatta) were fined for receiving supplies in a prohibited area, each having to pay 200 Swiss francs, while their coaches were fined 500 Swiss francs each.

Zanatta had to pay an additional 500 Swiss francs for breaking the rules while inspecting his car. Rene Andrle, coach of Israel-Premier Tech, also received a fine of 200 Swiss francs.

Then there was Jan Tratnik, who rode a long solo breakaway. He was penalized for littering in a forbidden area, receiving a 500 Swiss franc fine and a penalty d of 25 UCI points.

Yet again, during stage numero nine, the UCI managed to make some extra money. Luke Lamperti (Soudal Quick-Step) was fined 500 Swiss francs for "improper behavior". The American also had 25 UCI points deducted, while Mikkel Honoré received a 200 Swiss franc fine for so-called "inappropriate behavior".

Plenty of team leaders were also ticketed. Gianni Meersman of Alpecin-Deceuninck was fined 500 Swiss francs for an irregular action, specifically positioning his team car in a leading group when it was not allowed. Several team leaders were fined 200 Swiss francs each, for not following instructions given by the organizers. This included Meersman, Zak Dempster (INEOS Grenadiers), Mickael Leveau (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) and Frederic Guesdon (Groupama-FDJ).

The UCI made a considerable amount of money during the eighth stage. Danny van Poppel was fined 200 Swiss francs for crossing the finish line in the opposite direction. Movistar saw its rider Will Barta and team leader Max Sciandri receive fines of 200 and 500 Swiss francs, respectively, for providing supplies in a location where it was no longer allowed.

Team leaders Fabio Baldato (UAE-Team Emirates) and René Andrle (Israel-Premier Tech) also received fines for not adhering to the rules, while Astana Qazaqstan Team rider Henok Mulubhran was fined 500 Swiss francs for littering in an unauthorized area.

During the forty-kilometer time trial, three team directors were fined for not maintaining the correct distance from their riders. Those fined include Enrico Gasparotto (BORA-hansgrohe), Steven De Neef (Intermarché-Wanty) and – for the second day in a row – Alexandr Shefer of the Astana Qazaqstan Team. The fine amounts to 200 Swiss francs per team director.

On day six, Alpecin-Deceuninck incurred fines, specifically Nicola Conci (200 Swiss francs) and team director Gianni Meersman (500 Swiss francs). The team received these for "improper feeding times". A similar fine was also issued to Davide Bramati of Soudal Quick-Step, although for that team director, it was 200 Swiss francs.

Astana team director Alexandr Shefer also faced a penalty, this time for not adhering to rules imposed by the organizers (200 Swiss francs). Additionally, Shefer was fined an extra 500 Swiss francs because one of his riders — whose identity is unknown — disposed of waste in a location where it was not allowed.

Far from exemplary behavior in stage number five, which led towards Lucca. Clément Davy (Groupama-FDJ) and Enrico Zanoncello (Bardiani) have been fined 200 Swiss francs, received a one-minute time penalty in the general classification, and had fifteen UCI points deducted for illegally drafting behind a vehicle. The team managers of those two teams, Frederic Guesdon and Roberto Reverberi, respectively, have also received fines: both are to pay 500 Swiss francs.

Then, Ethan Vernon (Israel-Premier Tech) and Fabian Lienhard (Groupama-FDJ) received fines for taking food in a non-designated area: 200 Swiss francs each and another 500 Swiss francs for the team managers. Are we done? Certainly not! Cyril Dessel, team manager at Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale, has to pay 500 Swiss francs for unauthorized movements with the team car.

Was that all? Not quite yet! The aforementioned Zanoncello has also received another fine, this time for 'improper conduct'. Another 500 Swiss francs and another deduction of 25 UCI points. Finally, we end with Alpecin-Deceuninck-boys Quinten Hermans and Timo Kielich, both receiving fines of 200 Swiss francs for 'indecent behavior'. The difference between these two mentioned penalties is currently unclear.

In the fourth stage, some riders and team directors didn't put their best foot forward. Stefano Oldani, Damien Touzé and Pelayo Sanchez were each fined 200 Swiss francs for "inappropriate behavior". Ryan Mullen also received a hefty fine of 500 Swiss francs and was deducted 25 UCI points for discarding waste outside of the designated area.

Team directors Gianni Meersman (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Matt Winston (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) and Roberto Reverberi (Bardiani-CSF) were fined as well because one of their riders made the same mistake. Movistar team director Maximilian Sciandri was also penalized with a 500 Swiss franc fine when one of his team members littered outside the permitted zone. Lastly, while forty bikes were checked, the officials did not detect any issues.

Certain riders did not follow the rules in stage three. Both Christophe Laporte and Bert Van Lerberghe were found to have used the sidewalk, which carries a severe penalty: a fine of 1,000 Swiss francs, a time penalty of twenty seconds, 25 points deduction on the UCI Ranking, two penalty points for the mountain classification, and forty points deduction in the points classification of this Giro.

Additionally, Intermarché-Wanty, Lidl-Trek and Soudal Quick-Step have each been fined 500 Swiss francs for not disposing of litter in the correct place by one of their riders.

After an opening day with zero incidents, the first fines were issued on day two. Team director Matti Breschel of EF Education-EasyPost was fined 200 Swiss francs for a violation related to handing food to a rider. Another fine, 500 Swiss francs for littering outside the designated area, was imposed on another team director, Alexandr Shefer of Astana Qazaqstan. Trek Roscoe 24

Trek Roscoe 24

Roscoe 24 is a mid-fat kids' mountain bike designed to build confidence on the trail. It takes cues from the adult Roscoe, but this ride was built from the ground up for kids. 2.8" mid-fat tires, a 1x drivetrain, and a wide-range cassette make Roscoe the ideal bike for little rippers who want to build skills and have a ridiculous amount of fun keeping up with Mom, Dad, or an older sibling. Fit for riders 51-59" tall. It's right for you if... Your little shredder is ready to hop off the neighborhood streets and onto the trail, and you want to get them started the right way with a real-deal mountain bike that builds skills and confidence from the outset. If you're looking to teach your little one the wisdom of the trail, there's no better teaching tool than Roscoe. The tech you get A durable Alpha Gold Aluminum frame with a sloping top tube for added clearance, 24" wheels with mid-fat 2.8" tires for added traction and stability, a 1x8 Shimano drivetrain with a wide-range cassette for hills and technical sections, mechanical disc brakes, and loads of thoughtful details borrowed from adult MTB tech, like a closed front dropout and a tucked-in rear brake caliper so when kids drop their Roscoe it doesn't mean an automatic trip to the shop for a replacement part. The final word Give a kid a Roscoe and you'll make a mountain biker for life. Mid-fat tires and a wealth of kid-specific design details make this bike the perfect introduction to the trail. If your little one is ready to tag along when you hit the singletrack, this is the kid-friendly set-up that's made to build confidence, skills, and a healthy obsession with the world's greatest activity. Why you'll love it - There's no family outing as fun as a trail session, and Roscoe is the ideal kids' bike for building great memories - This isn't a small adult bike—it's built from the ground up for kids, by people who know exactly what works for them and what doesn't - When you're learning to ride, simplicity is best: a 1x8 drivetrain lets kids focus on keeping the rubber side down - The kid-specific frame geometry has a sloping top tube that makes it easier to hop on and off - The rear brake caliper is tucked into the frame to help prevent damage from laying the bike down

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

trek mtb team riders

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
