The Trek Domane SL 6 is a do-it-all bike that offers amazing comfort over long distances. It may not be the most sprightly bike out there, but it's a versatile machine that won't let you down, and comes with a great spec at a competitive price.

The Trek Domane SL 6 enters Editor's Choice 2019 thanks to its superb versatility and great spec that provides comfort over any endurance ride. I've done century rides, touring rides and fast paced group rides with the Domane SL 6 never letting me down. A reliable bike that is a pleasure to ride, the Domane SL 6 is well worth it's place in this year's Editor's Choice.

The Trek Domane SL 6 is a very different kind of bike to the super-stiff frame and racey geometry I'd usually choose to ride. It's endurance setup and all-round capabilities won me over though and I was left hugely impressed after putting in a lot of miles on it.

The Domane is Trek's endurance offering, with its ride-smoothing IsoSpeed frame technology the unique selling point over other brands. The SL 6 is the mid-range offering, retailing at £3,200 with the most expensive version (the SLR 9) retailing at over £9,500.

The front and rear IsoSpeed is certainly the most noticeable thing when first riding the bike. Coming from a super-stiff frame, it's instantly noticeable how forgiving this bike is over rough roads and was perfect for the varying quality of British lanes in the early winter.

The IsoSpeed decouplers sit at the rear of the top tube and in the head tube, but unlike the higher end models in the Domane range you aren't able to adjust the rear IsoSpeed for more stiffness or more comfort on the SL 6. It would be a nice option to be able to adjust the bike to the style of riding your doing, but the comfort offered here on the fixed setting felt great nonetheless.

trek domane sl 6 axs g4 red

One concern ahead of riding the SL 6 was whether the dampening technology would compromise any power transfer or how fast the bike would feel. The SL 6 carbon fibre frame has some quite bulky tubes, and was responsive to seated and sprint efforts along the flats and draggy inclines. The aerodynamic shaping of the tubing also added to that feel.

Really steep climbs with efforts out of the saddle was the bike's weakest point however. It didn't feel sprightly - particularly in comparison to the Specialized Tarmac and Giant TCR I'd just ridden - and wasn't inspiring any attacking on the harsh ramps. But the Domane isn't really designed for that, though it features a wide range of gearing (50/34 at the front with 11-34 rear) that did allow me to get over anything with no trouble.

trek domane sl 6 axs g4 red

The best thing about this bike is definitely it's versatility. I used it for short commutes, long weekend rides, some short fast rides and even for multi-day touring. Trek has helped this feeling of versatility by building in neat features like the down tube storage compartment for your tubes, tyre levers and CO2 canisters, as well as built in mounts front and rear for Bontrager lights; all great touches that helped on those long rides and while touring.

Wheels can often be a mixed bag at this sort of price range, but I was impressed by the Bontrager Paradigm Comp 25 wheels provided on the Domane SL 6. With a rim width of 25mm, the wheels came shod with 32mm tubeless Bontrager R2 Hard-Case Lite tyres that I thought rolled really well and felt plenty fast considering their size and shallow rim depth. Moreover, the wheels felt stable and robust, adding to the comfort factor for endurance riding. I had no punctures or issues with the wheels at all over hundreds of miles of testing. The frame also allows you to add up to 38mm tyres if you want to as well as mud guards, perfect for winter or taking the bike over cobbles or light gravel paths.

trek domane sl 6 axs g4 red

The SL 6 comes with mechanical Shimano Ultegra R8000 which as usual performed brilliantly with crisp and reliable shifting. The bike uses flat-mount Ultegra hydraulic disc brakes which really added to the feel on long or technical descents.

In terms of value I think the Domane SL 6 is in the expected range for what its offering, coming in £200 cheaper than the comparable Specialized Roubaix Comp for example. Although this isn't the kind of bike I would usually ride, I was genuinely taken with what the SL 6 offered with it's all-round capabilities.

Trek Domane SL 6 Review: Top-Quality Parts and Endurance Performance

domane sl6 frame

Trek Domane SL 6 Gen 4 is Trek’s second-highest bike in the carbon SL range and it spares no expense on top-quality parts and manufacture.

From here on up is the Domane SLR range, bikes that are focused on team-sponsored events and are mostly unaffordable to individual riders.

At its core, the SL 6 boasts Trek’s groundbreaking IsoSpeed shock reduction system built into its patented 500 Series OCLV carbon frame.

Together, the two offer one of the best carbon road bike framesets available, providing rigid stability and exceptional comfort.

Trek Domane SL 6 Quick Overview

Main features, is the trek domane sl 6 right choice for you, is it worth the money.

Trek Domane SL 6 Gen 4

With a Shimano 105 groupset, internal Di2 routing, Paradigm Comp rims, and a carbon seat post, it’s clear to see that Trek spared no expense when building the Domane SL6.

  • Frame : 500 Series OCLV Carbon, front and rear IsoSpeed, DuoTrap S compatible
  • Fork : Domane SLR carbon, internal brake routing, fender mounts
  • Front Derailleur : Shimano 105 R7150 Di2
  • Rear Derailleur : Shimano R7150 Di2
  • Wheels : Bontrager Paradigm Comp 25, tubeless-ready
  • Number of Gears : 22
  • Brakes : Shimano SM-RT70
  • Tires : Bontrager R3 Hard-Case Lite, aramid bead, 700x32c
  • Weight : 19.63 lbs / 8.90 kg

Get From TREK

The Domane SL 6 features quality parts from top to bottom, starting with the IsoSpeed frame and working down to the 105 groupset and Paradigm rims.

It’s a bicycle that personifies speed, comfort, and efficiency in every way possible.

Shimano 105 groupset

Shimano 150 groupset

Domane SL 6 used to sport a Shimano Ultegra groupset, but this year they’ve switched it back to 105.

While it might seem like a downgrade, 105 is one of the most popular groupsets among road cyclists and amateur racers.

Shimano 105 groupset offers performance and reliability all in one

OCLV carbon IsoSpeed frame

Trek has spent years developing its IsoSpeed system and it’s come through several iterations to reach the current product.

Designed as a means to absorb road shock without sacrificing efficiency, IsoSpeed is a somewhat futuristic frame technology.

It works by decoupling the seat tube from the frame using a rocker cup that permits some flex while maintaining rigidity.

While it might sound like overkill, it works so well you’ll likely never want to ride another bike without it.

This has been combined with its highly compacted, low-void carbon frame to add strength and confidence on even the roughest terrain.

If you’ve ever come off of a long ride feeling like your flesh has shaken off your bones, you’ll appreciate IsoSpeed technology.

It is particularly welcome on the famous cobbled streets that any European rider will be very well familiar with.

Paradigm Comp wheels

Trek Domane SL 6 comes fitted with Bontrager Paradigm Comp 25 TLR Disc road wheels with a Shimano 11-speed freehub on the rear.

The tubeless-ready rims have a 25mm inner width designed for wide road or gravel tires.

The SL 6 also comes with uncommonly large tires, in this case, Bontrager R2 Hard-Case aramid-bead 700x32c tires.

It’s an odd feature for a road bike but the extra fork clearance can actually take tires up to 38c in size.

Endurance geometry

Domane SL 6 Gen 4 is made for endurance riding

The geometry on Trek’s Domane SL range of bikes is designed to balance speed with comfort. It utilizes a slightly higher head tube to put the rider in a less aggressive position.

This provides better stability and comfort while maintaining a high degree of performance.

This helps the rider to conserve energy over long distances so there is still some juice in the tank for the final home stretch.

Micro-adjust seatmast

Amongst the Domane SL 6’s multitude of features is the micro-adjustable carbon seatmast.

It’s lightweight, aerodynamic, and provides millimeter-perfect adjustments for the exact right fit.

Professional riders will know the difference that even a millimeter in seat height can have on performance.

With the micro-adjust seatmast, you’ll be able to shave those much-needed seconds off your record time.

The Trek Domane SL 6 comes in 9 different sizes to fit heights of 4’11” to 6’5″.

  • 44 : 4’11” – 5’0″
  • 47 : 5’0″ – 5’2″
  • 50 : 5’2″ – 5’4″
  • 52 : 5’4″ – 5’6″
  • 54 : 5’6″ – 5’9″
  • 56 : 5’9″ – 5’11”
  • 58 : 5’11” – 6’1″
  • 60 : 6’1″ – 6’3″
  • 62 : 6’3″ – 6’5″

Trek Domane SL 6 is a professional carbon road for riders who compete regularly in races, sportives, and cycling events.

As the price indicates, it is not designed for casual use. The true potential would not be fully realized by an amateur rider.

However, the Trek Domane range does serve something of a niche in the carbon road bike world.

Rather than focusing purely on speed, Domane bikes are best suited to riders who will be tackling a variety of different terrain.

If you often find yourself held back by cobblestones, gravel, or dirt track, then the Domane SL 6 could be the answer you’re looking for.

It’s specifically designed to tackle undesirable terrain with smooth and calculated efficiency.

suggested

However, if purchased for the right reasons and used for its intended purpose, the Domane SL 6 will certainly make the buyer feel they have got their money’s worth.

The strong and build and quality parts mean the bike will last for years without the need for any expensive repairs or upgrades.

It represents the type of investment that may cost a lot initially but pays off in the long run.

I’m wondering about a point that was made in your review. You state that the IsoSpeed decouples the steerer tube and seat tube from the frame, but the Generation 4 Domane under review only has a rear IsoSpeed decoupler. (You can see this if you follow your link to the Trek web site for the bike under review.) The last Domane that had both front and rear IsoSpeed was Generation 3, which was discontinued in 2022.

Hi Steve! You’re right, thank you for pointing that out. It was an honest mistake that has now been corrected.

Trek Domane SL6 review

IsoSpeed front- and rear-equipped sportive bike that's one of our Endurance Bike of the Year 2020 contenders

David Caudery / Immediate Media

Warren Rossiter

Ride quality, assured handling, smoothness throughout

It carries a bit more weight than its rivals

For 2020, the Trek Domane’s front and rear IsoSpeed suspension-equipped chassis has undergone a major overhaul. It's lost a little weight, gained further aero shaping and, now that the design is disc specific, it’s opened up tyre clearance to a massive 38c size.

The geometry's been tweaked too, to a short reach at 380mm, with a mid-height 611mm stack for a 58cm-sized endurance bike.

What hasn’t changed, though, is the key to the Domane’s continued success – its palmarès includes wins at Paris-Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders – and that’s the quality of the ride.

Bike of the Year 2020

The Trek Domane SL6 is part of our annual Bike of the Year test.

Head to our Bike of the Year hub for the full list of winners, categories and shortlisted bikes, as well as the latest reviews – or read our behind-the-scenes feature on how we tested Bike of the Year 2020 .

Trek Domane SL6 03

Trek Domane SL6 frame

At the heart of this is its IsoSpeed decoupler. Simply put, it maintains the diamond-shaped geometry but 'decouples' the seat tube from the top tube, allowing the seat tube to flex with the lay of the road.

Trek has done a great job in reshaping the Domane and the bike now looks super-clean with little in the way of exposed cables anywhere, adding to the aerodynamic appeal.

Trek Domane SL6

The front-end routes the cables under the bar and stem and around the steerer tube, entering the frame just behind the head tube in a similar fashion to how Cervélo routes cables on its long running S-Series aero bikes.

The new Domane frame also includes quite a neat little surprise under the down-tube bottle bosses. There you'll find a compartment with a quick-release lever with enough space to store a spare tube, C02 cartridge and multi-tool. Inside there’s also a custom-sized tool wrap to stop any rattles or shakes.

It’s a neat idea and one I really like because it keeps your jersey pockets free of stuff and the bike looks cleaner without a grubby, mud-splattered saddle pack.

Trek Domane SL6

Trek Domane SL6 kit

Trek’s choice to specify 32mm tyres is certainly at odds with most endurance bikes and elevates overall weight to the 9.5kg mark, which is more in line with a gravel bike than a road-ready rig.

However, the SL6 doesn’t feel heavy when you’re riding it and the R2 tyres are impressive, featuring durable all-weather tread and hard-case protection that covers the roughest ground smoothly – everything from roughly chipped tarmac to frost scarred lanes and even light gravel – which makes up for carrying a few hundred extra grams over its rivals.

Trek Domane SL6

I’ve been impressed by their grip and puncture protection too, during plenty of winter test miles.

They sit well (and wide) on the Paradigm Comp 25 wheels. The Paradigms have an alloy rim that’s seriously broad at 25mm wide internally, which shapes the R2 tyres with a smooth, constant radius that boosts confidence when cornering.

Those wheels are beautifully put together with a build comprising serviceable brass nipples that hold the aero-bladed spokes in place, while the Rapid-drive, 54-tooth rear picks up quickly and spins smoothly. At 1,775g, they're not the lightest wheels but they're damn tough.

Trek Domane SL6

Unfortunately, unlike the Paradigm wheels, the tyres aren’t tubeless-compatible, so should you want to get the benefits of an inner tube-free ride, more versatility on tyre pressure, the elimination of pinch punctures and an ever-widening range of tyre options in the larger sizes the Domane can handle, you’ll need to replace them.

Just like pretty much every bike out there in this price range, Ultegra is the order of the day and the kind-to-your-knees 50/34 gearing is matched to a wide 11-34 cassette.

This equipped me with a low enough gear to attack the steepest of inclines knowing that a one-to-one bottom gear was there in reserve.

Trek Domane SL6

Trek Domane SL6 ride impressions

In an ideal world, the Domane would be a little lighter because it doesn’t share the same sprightly upward momentum as its lightweight endurance rivals, such as Canyon’s Endurace or Cannondale’s Synapse, but it boils down to a trade-off between class-leading comfort or climbing prowess.

Downhill, though, the Domane is a supreme partner. The IsoSpeed-equipped chassis sits down and grips where plenty of bikes can skit and skip across the road surface, especially when the surface is less than ideal.

Trek Domane SL6

Paired with excellent Ultegra brakes and Ice-tech rotors, the SL6 is one of the most enjoyable descending companions out there.

The Domane’s handling feels very stable and, despite that short 380mm reach and mid-height 611mm stack, doesn’t feel cramped or particularly upright or pedestrian. It’s just a very good place to spend lots of hours in the saddle.

Trek Domane SL6 overall

The SL6 has a huge amount going for it. The ride quality never fails to impress and it handles with assured stability without being dull.

If I was looking for a bike for a big challenge on sub-optimal roads then the Domane would be the first bike on that shortlist.

  • Who are they best suited for?
  • Why I think you shouldn’t buy Trek Domane with SRAM groupset.
  • And which model gives you the best value for your money?

KEY TAKEAWAY

Trek Domane bikes are ideal for on and off-road adventures. They are lighter but less terrain-oriented than the Trek Checkpoint family . The models differ in components (e.g., electronic shifting) and frames. The more expensive ones are usually lighter and have a higher-grade carbon frame, but usually diminishing returns.

Let’s dive deeper to help make your decision easier.

  • SLR are bikes with 800 series OCLV carbon (high-end).

*OCLV carbon is Trek’s patented carbon fiber process ( learn more ).

ALR Domanes are great for beginners, thanks to their affordability. They are competitive with bikes from other manufacturers.

SLs are the best mid-range option. They are lighter than ALs but heavier than SLRs. But they are much more expensive than ALs and more affordable than SLRs.

And finally, SLRs are the most high-end, which results in lower weight but higher price.

Most Domanes are available in 47-62 sizes, so whether you are short or tall, you should find a size that will suit you. They are also available in multiple colors to suit your liking.

Their geometry is relaxed, similar to other endurance road bikes or all-road gravel bikes.

It’s ideal for long-distance riding at a slower pace because it is more gentle to your lower back and neck. The following picture shows the comparison with Canyon Endurance CF 7.

Trek Domane vs. Canyon Endurance geometry comparison using bikeinsights.com tool.

Weight & Aerodynamics

Trek Domane frames are heavier than Émonda, especially due to their thicker tubes, hidden storage compartments, and IsoSpeed decoupler on the higher-end models.

However, they take inspiration from Madones, so you can also enjoy some aero gains.

Trek Domane view from the front.

Unfortunately, no data from wind tunnel testing are available. However, if you don’t count every second and prefer comfort, Domane is hands down a better option.

Wheels and Tires

Most low to mid-range Domane models come with Bontrager Paradigm SL (or Comp) aluminum wheels. More expensive models have carbon wheels like the Bontrager Aeolus Pro 37 or better.

Fortunately, all the wheels are tubeless-ready. Just make sure that the model you choose has tubeless tires if this feature matters to you.

Domane bikes are known for their wider tire clearance compared to Madone and Émonda (28mm). They can fit tires up to 38mm, making them ideal for light gravel, dirt roads, and other off-road adventures.

The wider tire clearance is what makes Domane bikes so versatile. You can ride them fast on paved roads, but they can also handle off-road terrain.

Unlike many gravel bikes on the market, the Domane bikes have 2X drivetrains, not 1X.

Trek fits them with Shimano and SRAM groupsets, and the number in the bike name indicates the groupset.

  • Models ending with 2 use Shimano  Claris  (R2000) groupset.
  • Models ending with 3 use Shimano  Sora  (R3000) groupset.
  • Models ending with 4 use Shimano  Tiagra  (R4700) groupset.
  • Models ending with 5 use Shimano  105  (R7000) groupset.
  • Models ending with 6 use Shimano Ultegra , 105 Di2 (R7100), or SRAM Rival AXS groupsets.
  • Models ending with 7 use Shimano Ultegra Di2 (R8100) or SRAM Force AXS groupsets.
  • Models ending with 9 use Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 (R9200) or SRAM Red AXS groupsets.

SRAM RED groupset detail on Trek Domane.

Interestingly, the Domanes with SRAM are heavier than the Domanes of the same series with the Shimano groupset. In addition, those with Shimano are also cheaper.

This is somewhat strange because Shimano retail prices are higher than SRAM’s. That’s why I recommend choosing Trek bikes with Shimano groupsets unless you prefer SRAM.

TIP : You might also be interested in this comparison of Shimano vs. SRAM .

Unlike the Émonda and Madone, Trek Domane bikes have racks and fender mounts , making them a better choice for bike packers.

Additionally, they also offer hidden storage compartments for extra storage capacity.

Lastly, carbon frame Domanes have an IsoSpeed decoupler that improves riding comfort by absorbing road vibrations.

IsoSpeed decoupler on the Trek Domane detail.

So, which Trek Domane bike is the best?

If you’re considering buying a Domane, I suggest a model with a Shimano groupset. They are lighter and less expensive than the equivalent SRAM models.

The AL models are ideal for beginners and those who want to try a versatile road bike.

I believe the Domane SL models offer a better price-value ratio than SLRs because they are much cheaper while being reasonably lightweight and have similar components. The Domane SL 6 with the Shimano 105 Di2 is a good deal.

Check out the SLR line if you have more money to spend and don’t want to compromise.

Trek Domane FAQ

Trek Domane bikes are for bike packers and those who don’t want to limit themselves to paved roads only. Wider tires on Domanes will allow you to ride off-road through light terrain and experience new adventures.

The main difference between Domane and Madone is that Domane is a more versatile road bike thanks to the wider tire clearance, while Domane is faster because it’s an aero road bike. For more detailed info, please check out my comparison of Domane vs. Madone .

The main difference between Domane and Émonda is that Domane is a versatile (endurance) road bike with wider tire clearance. Émonda is a simple, lightweight racing bike. Domane is somewhere between Émonda and Madone. Learn more in my Domane vs. Émonda comparison.

The main difference between Domane and Checkpoint is that Domane is a versatile road bike that can also be classified as an all-road gravel bike. It has narrower tire clearance and fewer mounting points than Checkpoint. Checkpoint is a pure gravel bike with different gearing. Check out my Domane vs. Checkpoint comparison for more details.

The 2023 Trek Domane is now official: SL, SLR, and RSL options explained

The endurance road bike returns to its endurance road purpose..

Trek hasn’t exactly been shy about the fact a new Domane was imminent. We saw the endurance-come-all-road bike earlier in the year at the Classics, and Elisa Longo Borghini even rode it to victory at Paris-Roubaix Femmes.

Now Trek has lifted the translucent curtain from the new bike, revealing all the finer details and model options. We have the new Domane SLR in hand for review but we need a little more time on it before we can offer an informed opinion. In the meantime, here’s what we know about the newly updated endurance road platform that consists of the Domane SL, the top-tier Domane SLR, and the return of a pro-friendly Domane RSL.

Simpler = lighter

In many ways, the new Domane returns to the roots of the endurance road platform. When it was first released a little over a decade ago, the Domane was a fully-fledged road bike, just with added ride comfort and more relaxed geometry. A subtly modified version was Fabian Cancellara’s pick for conquering the cobbles, and Trek surely sold a lot of bikes off that imagery.

However, more recent years have seen the Domane get increasingly more complicated, and that complexity came with added mass. For example, Trek took its original IsoSpeed concept from a simple flexible seat tube decoupled at the top tube via a bearing-based pivot and turned it into a system (at least at the high-end) that split the seat tube around a sliding mechanism that allowed you to tune the seated comfort. Meanwhile, the once ordinary front-end of the bike earned a de-coupled headset that allowed the fork steerer to flex more freely.

All impressive features, but also things that made the Domane heavier than a bike of its price should be.

And so we come to the newest version of the Domane. This bike waves goodbye to both the adjustable rear IsoSpeed and front IsoSpeed and instead moves to Trek’s fourth iteration of the comfort-inducing feature. Similar to the original introduced in 2012, this new and rear-only IsoSpeed isn’t adjustable and the only moving components are isolated to the pivot point that sits between the seat tube and top tube.

trek domane sl 6 axs g4 red

The reasons to walk away from front IsoSpeed are closely related to what was seen with the latest Checkpoint gravel bike . It comes down to modern tyre technology and trends toward going wider in volume. The front IsoSpeed is said to have been beneficial when tyres were 28 mm in size and run at high pressures but is too stiff to make an appreciable difference with a wider-volume tyre system, such as the 32 mm tubeless tyres supplied with the bikes.

Meanwhile, Trek has claimed that the return to its top tube-based IsoSpeed is more effective across the full-size range versus the previous seat tube-based IsoSpeed, which was unintentionally stiffer in smaller sizes. That non-adjustable flex is now said to match the most comfortable setting of the previous generation and is size-specific in the compliance provided.

What’s new is that Trek has moved away from its almost signature upside-down seatpost topper or post-within-a-post designs, and instead adopted its own telescoping D-shaped carbon post. Securing it is a binder wedge that’s integrated with the new IsoSpeed system. The binder is hidden beneath a magnetic cover plate and is designed to work with common pre-set 5-5.2 Nm torque wrenches (or any style of torque wrench). Meanwhile, the proprietary carbon seatpost is being produced in two different set-back versions.

trek domane sl 6 axs g4 red

With fewer moving parts the new Domane SL and SLR framesets are approximately 300 grams lighter than before. Additionally, the new SLR version is the lightest Domane Disc yet. Trek quotes 56 cm framesets for the Domane SL (OCLV 500-series carbon) and Domane SLR (OCLV 800-series carbon) at 2,500 g and 1,700 g, respectively. However, precisely what those framesets include is somewhat unclear. Add in some refined Bontrager wheels and the formerly porky base-level Domane SL5 complete bike is now a claimed 700 g lighter – although it’ll still sit above 9 kg with pedals.

The two tiers of Domane share the same moulds and are therefore visually and feature-wise identical. The weight difference is merely down to the Domane SL using a lower modulus “OCLV 500-series” carbon fibre lay-up. In contrast, the Domane SLR uses Trek’s high-modulus “OCLV 800-series” blend (the highest grade of carbon used in the Domane to date) that carries quite the premium pricing. Trek’s entry-level aluminium endurance road bike, the Domane AL – a bike we reviewed in 2021 – remains unchanged.

Not unlike what we’ve seen with other bikes in this category, Trek claims improved aerodynamic performance through features already seen with its Emonda , including revised Kammtail (aka truncated airfoil) shaping and an integrated-ish cockpit with semi-concealed cable routing. That cockpit consists of a two-piece handlebar and stem, where the brake hoses and mechanical gear cables (if applicable) are routed outside of the bar and underneath the new RCS Pro stem, which features a removable cover. The cables/hoses then flow into Trek’s proprietary headset spacers/top cap before being fed through the top headset bearing. And while it’ll look less seamless, the system allows regular stems and handlebars to be used.

Spanning a generous range, the nine available frame sizes point to the popularity of this platform. The Domane SL and SLR keep with Trek’s ‘endurance’ geometry which offers shortened reaches and raised stacks compared to its race-focussed Emonda and Madone offerings. Steering geometry remains on the quicker side for the endurance road category, while the wheelbase is a tad longer than some.

trek domane sl 6 axs g4 red

Still ready for all-road use

Trek claims the new Domane is a “road first” platform, but simultaneously talks to its versatility provided by the class-leading 38 mm tyre clearance. That massive tyre clearance remains unchanged from the previous generation and is based on a 6 mm window all the way around the tyre. The figure is based on what Trek considers to be the largest 38 mm-measured tyre width on the market, so there’s plenty of tolerance in here to go bigger than what is officially recommended. All Domane complete bikes come stock with 32 mm tyres.

trek domane sl 6 axs g4 red

If I had a way to bang a gong and shout this news, I would. The new Domane spells the end of Trek’s BB90 press-fit system, and the American company’s entire road range now features a threaded bottom bracket. Like we’ve seen with the Madone and Emonda, the Domane uses Trek’s take on the T47 ‘internal’ threaded bottom bracket, one that has open compatibility with all aftermarket T47 bottom brackets and modern crank spindle systems.

Like previous generations, the hidden fender mounts remain, and using those allows for up to a 35 mm tyre to be fitted. Also continuing over is the down tube storage hatch that hides beneath the bidon cage. Within it you’ll find the same tool and tube wrap. Meanwhile, the mounts for a top-tube feed bag remain, too. Another minor and overlooked detail is Trek’s integrated 3S chain keeper which works admirably well.

trek domane sl 6 axs g4 red

The RSL, a return of the pro version

Go back to the days of Fabian Cancellara skipping across the cobbles and you’ll find that his Domane wasn’t like the one you’d find in your local Trek store. Rather it was a Race Shop Limited (RSL) version from Trek’s Project One range. Sold only in the sizes needed by the key riders of WorldTour team, this pro version combined a race-specific geometry with the wider tyre clearance and smoother frame that the Domane sought to offer. Now Trek has brought the pro version back as a frameset-only option in the form of the Domane RSL.

trek domane sl 6 axs g4 red

While the regular Domane SL and SLR come in a choice of nine sizes, the RSL version is offered in just five sizes spanning from 52 through to 60 cm. Those five sizes feature Trek’s H1.5 fit which offers more aggressive stack and reach figures in line with its Emonda and Madone bikes. Meanwhile, steeper head angles result in super short trail figures that should equate to a quicker steering characteristic.

There are a few other differences that expand beyond the geometry. Pro riders tend to push bigger gears and the RSL version is designed to clear up to 54/40T rings, or a 54T if run 1x. By comparison, the Domane SL/SLR will only fit a maximum of 52/36T gearing or a 50T single ring. That chainring clearance comes with the trade-off of reduced tyre clearance, with the RSL designed to fit up to 35 mm rubber. And while the SL/SLR framesets can use either electronic or mechanical groupsets, the RSL is electronic-only.

trek domane sl 6 axs g4 red

Made with racing in mind, the Domane RSL also drops the down tube storage hatch, the top tube bag mounts, and the fender compatibility. As a result, it’s approximately 100 g lighter than the SLR version.

Models and pricing

There are many complete bike options within the new Domane SL and SLR ranges. Excluding the top-tier SLR 9 eTap (which has Trek-Segafredo team look-a-like Pirelli tyres), all models come equipped with tubeless-ready wheels (hooked bead), Bontrager R3 32 mm tubeless-ready tyres, and tubeless valves and sealant are also provided.

The premium-priced SLR starts with the expected Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 and SRAM Red AXS options, and goes down to models with new Shimano 105 Di2 and SRAM Rival AXS. There are five stock frame colours choices shared amongst the SLR bikes and framesets. A frameset is also available for US$4,200 / €5,000 / £4,500 / AU$NA.

trek domane sl 6 axs g4 red

Meanwhile, the lower-cost Domane SL frame is available at the base level with Shimano 105 mechanical, and goes up to models with either Shimano Ultegra Di2 or SRAM Force AXS. And being cheaper doesn’t mean any less choice in paint, with options spanning from boring through to sparkle-drenched. And somewhat unexpectedly, Trek will offer the Domane SL as a bare frameset for US$2,500 / €3,000 / £2,700 / AU$NA.

trek domane sl 6 axs g4 red

And as already mentioned, the pro-edition RSL is available only as a frameset, priced at US$4,200 / €5,000 / £4,500 / AU$5,600.

Review to come

CyclingTips’s head of tech, James Huang, recently received a new Domane SLR for test, and I plan on borrowing one in October. You can expect a deep-dive review on this new endurance road bike in the coming months.

Domane SL 6 AXS Gen 3 - Trek Bikes

www.trekbikes.com

The Domane is a great bike. I don't have one but know a few who do. Everyone likes it. I wouldn't put all that much consideration into the Isospeed gimmick. There's a reason Trek doesn't use it anymore. I don't know that 30% off a two year old bike is all that great. Especially off the 'retail' price. New bike prices have been dropping. You can get 2023 models at 30% off. What's the price you've been given? Looks to me retail is $5,000. So $3500?

Yea, those iso's are what, about 3# each?

trek domane sl 6 axs g4 red

lol, no.

I had a Domane with Ultegra for a few years. It was a great bike. The 32mm tires are the greatest contributor to comfort, IMHO. The higher stack also helps. In addition to the ISO speed stuff there are elastomer inserts below the bar tap on the tops. Trek seems to take comfort seriously. That bike also had some nice Vision carbon rims. Also worthy of note is that there are fender mounts, which are mandatory in my home of Oregon. I think the Blendr system they have is nice, too. It allows your computer and/or headlight to mount on the front of the stem, making for a clean cockpit. I only sold my Domane because I decided to rearrange my stable to include a gravel bike as well as a road bike. The Domane was redundant at that point. $3,500 seems like a decent price.
