5 of the Best U.S. Trips to Take With Your Sister

There’s an easy answer for where you should travel with your sister -- everywhere! After all, adventuring with your sister is awesome. You get to know each other better, you laugh over each other’s weird choice in gas station snacks, and you share a variety of fun experiences that can only happen when you get out of your comfort zone and hit the road. To kickstart your brainstorming, here are some of our favorite ideas on trips you should take with your sister. 

1. Road Trip Through Charleston & Savannah

Charleston and Savannah are two fun Southern cities that appeal to travelers of all ages. With history tours and lively bars and restaurants, there are lots of things to do here for sisters with different interests. Visit the Charleston Museum, founded in 1773 for more on Charleston’s colonial past. After that, take a carriage ride through the city, with a break for oysters at Darling Oyster Bar. Top it all off with a cocktail from the roof deck at the Cocktail Club. 

Spend the night at the French Quarter Inn to be right at the heart of the historic downtown. 

When you’ve had your fill of Charleston, hit the road and drive two hours to Savannah for more Southern fun. As in Charleston, you should start your trip in Savannah’s Historic District, where you can visit many of the attractions on foot. Grab a cocktail and walk through the town’s many squares. Stroll along the river at sunset, and afterwards, take a guided ghost tour for insights and folklore surrounding the history of the city.

2. Rent a Houseboat on Lake Powell, Arizona

There are few areas more majestic in the United States than Lake Powell. In fact, the entire surrounding region in northern Arizona is full of natural wonders you might have heard of, like Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon, and the Grand Canyon . To explore the area in full, fly into Flagstaff and drive to Page , where you’ll find the docks for Lake Powell houseboats, Antelope Point Marina. If you don’t fully rent a houseboat, which would allow you to camp out on the lake or on the many empty beaches there, you can at least charter a boat and get out on the water for a day.

3. Learn How to Surf in Hawaii

Learning an activity with your sister can really bring you together, so why not try your hand at surfing in a beautiful setting? There’s never a wrong time to visit Hawaii , but heading here in the early months of spring, when it’s still cold elsewhere in the U.S., is a particularly great idea. The waves pick up on Oahu’s South Shore and calm down on the North Shore this time of year, making for some great days on the water as you learn how to surf. (Writer’s Note: I was raised in Hawaii and recently brought some friends for a surf retreat instructed by the North Shore Surf Girls and it was a ton of fun.)

4. Become a Snow Bunny in Vail

The Pool at The Sebastian – Vail /Oyster

For a fun girl’s weekend that’s a little bit of an indulgence, hop on over to Vail , Colorado, where you can hit the slopes during the day and the après-ski scene in the evening. Spend your nights at The Sebastian so that you can take advantage of their spa, Bloom Spa, consistently rated one of the best spas in all of Vail.

5. Go to a Broadway Show in New York City

For sisters who are more into the city life, a trip to New York for a Broadway show can be a perfect adventure. If you’ve never been to the Big Apple before, start by jumping on a hop-on-hop-off bus to get a feel for the city. There are a lot of things to see and do in New York — Times Square , the Empire State Building, The Statue of Liberty — but if you want to get off the tourist track, just pick a neighborhood, like SoHo or the West Village , and walk around. Be sure to book tickets to your Broadway show in advance! 

Stay at New York Marriott Marquis to be near Times Square and the Theater District, or Gramercy Park Hotel to be a little more removed from all of the times square hubbub.

Top Destinations To Visit With Your Siblings

To strengthen your bond with your sibling, visit these handpicked places that combine with your interests.

The relationship you have with your siblings is very special and weird. You love them to death, but sometimes no one wants to kill them more than you. They are your partners in crime but also the ones that tattle to your mother. In spite of the fighting, crying, and drama, you can’t help but love them, because they will stay by your side no matter what happens. 

Siblings are also the ones who make great travel mates. While childhood vacations were a forced adventure, as you grow older, you can choose to spend quality time with each other based on your common interests.  

Destinations That You And Your Sibling Will Love, Based On The Things You Love

1 . for the curious, critical, and pop-culture inclined—london.

Growing up, we all had favourite books and movies. This love for culture is fuelled further if you have a sibling to share it with—to have someone who can recite the dialogues from your favourite movies, or complete the quotes from your favourite books, and get the pop cultural references even before you spell them out. If you and your sibling belong to this group, London should be your destination. If you are a Potterhead, a visit to the otherworldly theme park, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, is a must-do.

Situated in Leavesden, it takes you through the original props, costumes, and sets used in the movies. Apart from this, there are many spots in London that are equally Harry Potter-magical. The Millenium Bridge was featured in ‘Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince’. King’s Cross Station, where students of Hogwarts boarded the Hogwarts Express, has a sign indicating the popular ‘Platform 9 3/4’. The Leadenhall Market in London was used as the exterior of Diagon Alley. 

Of course, Harry Potter isn’t the only cultural draw in London. Don’t miss the legendary Abbey Road where The Beatles shot the iconic album cover photo on the zebra crossing. Sherlock Holmes fans will find the Sherlock Holmes Museum at the famous address, 221B Baker Street. The museum has four floors with authentic furniture and props related to their cases. You can also visit the Old Royal Naval College in London where famous movies like ‘Les Miserables’ were shot.

2 . For Fans Of Fresh Air—New Zealand

Some of us like the outdoors more than the indoors. It feels as if the trees, wind, lakes, and sky keep calling for us to spend time with them. If exploring nature puts a smile across your and your siblings’ faces, then New Zealand is the destination for your trip together. New Zealand has unimaginably beautiful landscapes that transcend human imagination. Mount Cook, the highest mountain in the country, is one such example. Mount Cook (also called Aoraki) National Park is a popular camping spot with resorts and cabins. If you prefer the beach, there are camping sites like Urupukapuka Bay Campsite, Spirits Bay, Motuora Island, Poukaraka Flats, and others—all of which are very tourist-friendly. Amid some of the most awe-inspiring natural beauty, there are hiking trails, beaches, and other attractions—something that will satisfy all interests and moods.  

3. For Those Who Like To Drop The Beat And Enjoy The Nightlife—Belgium

If your sibling and you saved all your pocket money through your teenage years to buy the latest dance album every summer, then Belgium is the destination for you. The country has a vibrant music industry, with traditional, folk, and street music particularly thriving. Belgium also is where one of the most famous dance music festivals is held, Tomorrowland. The music festival is known for its great mix of EDM, with the best DJs leading massive stages. Thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, Tomorrowland is now a virtual festival conducted over the weekend of July 25-26. Other music festivals across Belgium that you must attend include Rock Werchter and Pukkelpop. 

4. For The Adrenaline Seekers—Australia

While some seek security and comfort, others seek thrills. If your sibling and you love the idea of adrenaline pumping in your veins, then Australia is the place to be. It offers a wide variety of adventure sports, from skydiving to shark cage diving. White water rafting is especially popular—even if you’re a beginner, you can try it perfectly safely, with protective gear and a little caution. Famous spots for white water rafting in Australia include the Franklin River, Mitta Mitta River, and Tully River. If your sibling and you love underwater life, then you can scuba dive.

In Australia, you can experience shark cage diving too, where you can get up, close and personal with the sharks, for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Calypso Star Charters in Port Lincoln provides this unique experience. Try skydiving in Melbourne, Gold Coast, and Sydney. Or cliff camping on the Mount Buffalo gorge, where you are suspended on a 300-metre cliff face for an overnight stay.

5. For Those Who Think The World Is Their Dance Floor—Czech Republic

If the weekend is your favourite time of the week, and dancing the night away is what you and your sibling love, then you must visit the Czech Republic as soon as possible. Get the whole gang of cousins together and experience the amazing nightlife of the Czech Republic, famous for its eclectic party culture, night clubs, and microbreweries. Prague, the country’s capital, offers both cosy bars and blaring techno clubs and is famous for its pub crawls.

Prague’s Pub Crawl is the biggest in Europe. Karlovy Lazne is a five-story club in Prague, popular not just for its size but the experience it offers on every floor. The first floor buzzes with chart-topping music, with an Oxygen Bar and Ice Bar. The Oxygen Bar, as the name suggests, serves essential oils infused with oxygen to help to treat hangovers. Ice Bar’s temperature is always below -8 degrees Celsius. The second floor has a dance floor and a laser light show. The third floor is retro, with vintage décor and a dance floor. The fourth floor grinds with hip-hop and RnB beats. The fifth floor is a chilled space, with bean bags and soft music. 

6. For Those Who Know That A Full Stomach Equals A Happy Person—Thailand

Food is a necessity for some, while others simply relish the taste. There are some only concerned when the dish will be ready, and others who take an interest in what goes into the making of the dish. If you and your sibling fall into the latter category, you need to visit Thailand. This country is all about its amazing street food. The flavours that make up Thai cuisine are coconut milk, peppers, lime, shrimp paste, and tamarind. The smells of various kinds of meat being cooked and the smoke from it, welcome you to try the famous street food of Thailand .

Some street food restaurants and vendors have even been awarded Michelin stars. Of course, there is fine dining here too. There are also curries of seafood that must be tried to get an idea of the authentic Thai taste with creamy, sweet, sour, and spicy flavours. Apart from common dishes like different Thai curries, dishes like Khao Soi, Gai Yang, and Tom Kha Kai are must-eats. Khao Soi is a thick coconut milk-infused gravy that consists of boiled and fried egg noodles, herbs, and meat. Gai Yang is chicken grilled with different herbs and is served with Thai sticky rice. This dish is more famous on the streets. Tom Kha Kai is an authentic soup from Thai cuisine made with coconut and chicken and has both sweet and sour flavours.

The fun and excitement one can have with a sibling are unique. All of the mentioned places can strengthen your bond and give you more time to explore the activities both of you love. Even though you cannot travel to these places right now, you can add them to your bucket list and use this time to research and make a proper plan. Common interests between siblings are rare to come by, as they usually turn out to be opposites. So when you do find something that you love as much as you love each other, it must be treasured and nurtured, and travelling and indulging in them is a wonderful way of doing so.

Family travel — whether multi-gen, nuclear, or extended — can be fraught even within the best (read: least-dramatic) family dynamics. When siblings are involved, old rivalries rear their heads, long after you've grown up and stopped living under the same roof. All of a sudden, you may find yourself calling shotgun or arguing over who has to share a room with the younger sister who snores. Your squabbles will likely also be about the larger issues that come up on any group trip, like where you want to travel to, budgets, and who is in charge of dinner reservations.

When I traveled to the Six Senses Shaharut in Israel with my sister, who lives in a small town between Jerusalem and Be'er Sheva, we disagreed plenty. We squabbled over how many nights to spend (we both have children we'd left with our husbands); where to eat (she has dietary restrictions and I like to try everything); and how much time should be devoted to relaxing by the pool versus hiking and camel riding.

That said, we also bonded in a way we hadn’t since we were kids, sharing secrets and stories like we used to when we shared a bunk bed as tweens. As much as a sibling trip can be stressful, it also has the potential to be truly magical, reigniting a connection that has faded over time.

After that trip, plus a Napa vacation with my youngest brother and an upcoming Amsterdam jaunt with my older brother (yes, I'm one of four), I’ve learned a few things about traveling with adult siblings. I also spoke with some travel experts to get even more tips. Here, five things to keep in mind when planning a trip and traveling with your adult siblings.

Determine the Purpose of the Trip

Is this a long-awaited safari trip or a repeat visit to one of the places you went to as kids? As you start to plan, make sure everyone is on the same page about where you’re going and why, and what each of you hopes to get out of the trip. If one of you wants to relax by the pool and the other is hoping for nonstop bonding time, that might create some friction. To avoid any conflict, talk beforehand to determine everyone’s goals. “Consider the places you have traveled in the past (individually or together), and if you want to revisit a nostalgic destination for your family or try something new together,” says Bridget Lackie, general manager of Scott Dunn US . “Some siblings may be up for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, some may be yearning for cultural exploration through a historically significant destination, while others would prefer a relaxing, off-the-grid beach destination.”

Make the Trip Accessible for Everyone

Similar to other group trips, it’s important to keep everyone’s needs in mind, even if they are extremely varied. This applies to budgets, mobilities and physical differences, time frames, and more. Lackie says, “You may all be at different stages in life and budgets are different for everyone, so we have found having the conversation early around budget can help mitigate the stress to ensure everyone agrees on an amount to make the planning more enjoyable for all."

Beyond monetary considerations, be sure to check in about expectations around things like modes of transportation and activities — and how active those activities will be. “When planning the itinerary for a group like this, you need to offer engaging activities that everyone can enjoy together, as well as ones that are more tailored for individual interests,” says Stephanie Papaioannou, Abercrombie & Kent's vice president of Tailor Made and Private Travel. Also, think about how long everyone has to get away — your single sibling who works remotely can probably do a longer trip than your sib who has three kids at home. Find the middle ground that works for everyone — I promise, there is one.

Have One Decision Maker

After you discuss everyone’s needs and desires, you should select a point person. You probably already know who this should be among your siblings — the person who typically takes charge anyway and probably planned your parents' 25th-anniversary party. Having one person take the lead helps avoid a lot of back and forth and long text chains about trivial things, like what time dinner should be. “The biggest tip for planning a family trip like this would be to have one decision maker who will collect and distribute information,” Papaioannou says. “A&K’s Tailor Made team finds it helpful to do an initial conference call with everyone in order to get a good idea of what each guest wants to have out of the journey, but afterward there ultimately needs to be just one point of contact.”

Keep the Past in the Past

When you find yourself with family, and especially with siblings you know too well, you may be tempted to bring up an old argument or embarrassing story from when you were kids. Don’t. Instead of rehashing childhood pain points, like who mom favored or why the baby of the family never had to do the dishes, just enjoy the new memories you’re creating in the present. Of course, nostalgic stories from growing up together that won’t make anyone feel hurt are welcome.

Nobody Is the Parent

Although there should be a point person, that person is NOT the parent. Neither is the oldest sibling. While it may be tempting to fall into old patterns, you’re all adults — even the youngest sibling — and nobody is responsible for anyone else. With that in mind, everyone should respect each other and their opinions and needs. Treat one another more like friends in this regard, and things will go much more smoothly. For example, when I went to Napa with my younger brother, it took some time for me to accept that he had opinions on wine and where we should drink it. In my mind, he’s stuck at 12, his age when I left home for college, but in reality, he’s 32 and just as much a grown-up as I am.

From dreaming to planning and here we are sis, traveling . But it wasn’t easy getting here. You were the strength that I’ve always looked up to and the star that I followed until I could find my own way. When I stood on my own feet, I remember the times where I wiggled my toes in the sand at the Green Lagoon in Krabi or allowed myself to fall at The Plunge in Danao .

TWO HEADS ARE BETTER THAN NONE

I mean one..

Having a sister to freely talk to about your dreams and consider them as travel possibilities is a winner. Despite distance, time and exchange rate differences, planning is exciting and more fluid when you have someone who indulges you, er, I mean helps you layout the travel itinerary. I am a travel noob, so what I lack in planning she makes up for it with tact and finesse. Also, at the end of the day , if the journey doesn’t end up well, you aren’t the only one to blame.

Stereotypically speaking, the elder ones should provide, right? I know traveling solo is a liberating experience. Nonetheless experiencing places with your sister is a different kind of freedom, monetary freedom. You shamelessly get those little freebies for street food and souvenirs that you don’t get to experience whilst alone.

I am unskilled at navigating my immediate surroundings when in a new place. Sharing a wonderful space with your sister makes this uncertain world a little bit less scary.

Sometimes it takes a long-haul flight and a 12-hour time difference to bond with the person with whom you once shared a bunk bed — or tattled on.

As young boys in Penang, Malaysia, Aik Wye and Sean Ng routinely watched English Premier League soccer, something of a national obsession, on TV. They witnessed the way their community gathered in kopi tiams, or coffee shops, to catch the action from afar. They remember their friends and family members growing impassioned with each goal made — or missed. And although some of their uncles attended matches at Old Trafford, the iconic stadium in Manchester, England, the Ng brothers were relegated to rooting for Manchester United from thousands of miles away.

That is, until the brothers were in their mid 20s, and finally traveled to Manchester to see their favorite team play live.

“It was surreal. We had tickets high up in the stands — it was like watching tiny dots — but it was still amazing,” said Aik Wye Ng, 38, a managing director at a New York City-based public relations agency.

The Ngs spent their childhood boomeranging around Asia with their parents, traveling to Hong Kong, Thailand, Cambodia and more. Now grown men, they see each other a few times a month (Sean Ng, 44, and his wife live in Fort Lee, N.J.). But that doesn’t stop the brothers from planning ambitious leisure trips together. Last year, they swung through Lisbon before making their way back to their beloved Manchester.

Call it what you will: the sibling-moon, the (cringe) bro-liday. By any moniker, vacationing with one’s adult siblings is a unique endeavor with particular benefits and challenges. But those who have done it agree: Sometimes it takes a long-haul flight and a 12-hour time difference to bond with the person with whom you once shared a bunk bed — or tattled on to Mom.

“Traveling provides extended quality time and unique circumstances where you’re working through things together, experiencing new things together, and doing activities that are good for building relationships,” said Elizabeth Dorrance Hall , a Michigan State University professor who studies family communication.

Patty Diez has been traveling with some combination of her three sisters — two of whom are her roommates in Brooklyn — for a decade.

As the youngest, Ms. Diez, 28, is accustomed to going with the flow. In August 2017, she decided to accompany one sister to Portugal after seeing enticing photos of the resort. The next year, after receiving her tax return, she booked a $704 plane ticket to Hanoi, tacking herself onto another sister’s 10-day Vietnam expedition.

“Once you’ve found someone you can travel with, you have to latch onto them. As far as what we like to do, we’re all aligned. None of us are super into museums or long walking tours; we all like to go to a city and just wander,” said Ms. Diez, the editorial coordinator at Eater.

Having vacationed as children in a lakeside cabin in Ontario, Canada, Marissa and Jessica Talbot, a 27-year-old teacher in Miami Beach, and a 24-year-old nurse in Oahu, Hawaii, respectively, felt lured by the great outdoors when planning a weeklong Pacific Northwest trip in March. They snowshoed around Mount Rainier in Washington State, explored Bainbridge Island, just off Seattle, and bonded over their love of adventure with new friends at StormBreaker Brewing in Portland, Ore.

“We got deeper into different conversations — the ones we don’t have time to have when we’re running in between work and other things in life,” Jessica Talbot said. “It was really nice to get that one-on-one time and discuss things that we can’t always discuss.”

Of course, like many Google Maps-wielding tourists in a new place, the Talbots had a couple of tiffs about directions.

“We’re sisters, so of course we bicker, but there were no major fights,” Marissa Talbot said.

The ability to recover from a minor spat, usually an inherent element of sibling relationships, can be helpful on vacation, said Dr. Dorrance Hall, who regularly travels with her sister. And the mere act of planning a trip together can spark meaningful conversation.

“It gives you something to talk about for months leading up to it. Then you make the memories when you’re there, and you have something to talk about next time you see each other as you reminisce,” she said.

This summer, all it took for Jeremy MacKechnie to pull the trigger on a trip with his husband, brother and sister-in-law — something the two couples had been loosely considering, with little headway — were $7 upgrades on flights to Cancún that seemed too good to be true.

“I decided to just book first and ask questions later,” said Mr. MacKechnie, whose daughter was then 18 months old. His brother and sister-in-law hadn’t taken a break since their sons, then 2 and 7, were born.

“Now that we have kids, we don’t get that much time to just hang out as adults,” said Mr. MacKechnie, 33, who works at a tech start-up in New York City. “It was the best vacation I ever booked.”

Whereas Mr. MacKechnie and Marissa Talbot are both the designated planners, other siblings are more likely to share that task.

Priya Gursahaney, 37, an obstetrician-gynecologist in Cincinnati, and her younger brother, Vivek, 33, who lives in Columbus, Ohio, both have “strong personalities” — her words — and collaboratively craft vacations that suit their mutual love of culture-rich cities and active travel.

Together they have attended a string quartet concert at the Municipal House, a famed building in Prague, and visited La Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires. But what the Gursahaneys value most are the simpler moments; say, sharing a packed sandwich at Laguna de los Tres, a lagoon in Patagonia, while gazing upon the staggering Monte Fitz Roy.

“It’s a nice thing to have, especially as we get older. I don’t have a family of my own yet, so all the more reason to share that closeness with my brother,” Dr. Gursahaney, 37, said.

“You’re not done working on your sibling relationship after you’re a teenager,” Dr. Dorrance Hall, the communication expert, said. “You will continue to build that relationship your whole life.”

If there’s anyone who knows a thing or two about that, it’s Ramesh Gursahaney, 71, the Gursahaneys’ father. In September, the semi-retiree, who lives in Hudson, Ohio, took a 12-day National Parks vacation with two of his six living siblings, ages 73 and 76, plus spouses.

“It’s the first time in a long time when it’s just us and nobody else,” said Mr. Gursahaney, joking about choosing the easy trails in Zion. “Spending time with family: That’s gold.”

Tips for nailing the sibling-moon

Get on the same page about finances. When Dr. Dorrance Hall travels with her sister, they keep a running tab of all the costs and settle up at the end. “That way you’re not trying to split checks, which can slow things down and ruin a special moment together,” she said. And the Gursahaneys are philosophically aligned. “Since we were raised in the same household, we have the same views on money,” Dr. Gursahaney said. “When it’s something that we think is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, we don’t mind paying a little more.

Divide the tasks as much as possible. “One thing that’s really important in terms of relational maintenance for siblings is sharing tasks — splitting up the planning for your trip,” Dr. Dorrance Hall said. “It’s a really good tool for keeping up communication.”

Embrace solo side trips. If Ms. Diez wants to get up early and explore a new city but her sister wants to sleep in, no worries. “We just do our own thing and meet up later — that way no one’s sacrificing anything they want to do in that moment,” she said.

Have real conversations, even if they’re difficult. One night, while having dinner in Vietnam, Ms. Diez and her sister, who were living on opposite coasts at the time, got into an emotional talk about their need to see each other more. “We had a very open discussion, and of course we were both upset,” she said. “We walked back to our hotel in silence and eventually someone said something. After that, we were fine.”

Sisters sits at the western edge of Central Oregon, nestled against the foothills of the Cascade Range, and is a year-round home base for year-round adventure. Here's what to expect in each season.

Springtime high temperatures typically fall between 60º and 75º, with sunshine and bluebird skies broken up only occasionally by just two to four days of rainfall per month. Take advantage of the crisp weather by pedaling one of the two scenic bikeways that depart from Sisters. Low temperatures can reach freezing, even into June, so bring a light jacket.

Highs in July and August hover around the low to mid-80s, making summer the perfect time to drive the 82-mile McKenzie Pass-Santiam Pass Scenic Byway, paddle Clear Lake, and enjoy hikes in the heart of the Cascades. Lows typically dip into the 50s after dinner and into the 40s when it's time to put out the campfire, so bring a light jacket if your adventures don't end with the sunset.

Fall is a refreshing time to be in Sisters, when high temperatures typically fall between the mid-60s and mid-70s—perfect weather for enjoying the Sisters Folk Festival and its many outdoor concerts. Expect low temperatures to reach freezing by the end of September, so pack along a light jacket and hat.

Winter brings nearly three feet of snow to Sisters and much more to the neighboring Cascade Range; by late December, Hoodoo Ski Area is bustling with skiers and snowboarders—and is the only resort to offer night skiing in Central Oregon. High temperatures around Sisters typically reach the mid-40s, with five to six days of rain or snow falling per month.

About Sisters

A visit to Sisters feels like a trip back in time—and not just because its buildings are decorated to look like an 1880s-era Wild West town.

Wooden sidewalks line the street through downtown Sisters, offering access to the community's boutiques, galleries, and restaurants. An old-time drive-in dishes homemade ice cream, much as it's done since 1952. Public restrooms are marked for “Cowboys” and “Cowgirls.” Even the UPS shipping store is called The Pony Express.

Explore the Wilderness by Foot

Covering more than 281,000 acres, the Three Sisters Wilderness is home to roughly 260 miles of trails that offer some of the best views in all of Oregon—including Cascade peaks, glaciers, waterfalls, alpine meadows, summertime wildflowers, lava fields, mountain lakes, and other natural wonders. Note that you'll need a permit (part of the Central Cascades Wilderness Permit System) if hiking most trails or backpacking between Memorial Day weekend and the end of September. Explore the Rimrock Wonder. Three forks of the Wild and Scenic Whychus Creek begin as glaciers in the Three Sisters Wilderness before winding through the Cascades, Sisters area, and Central Oregon high desert. Numerous hiking trails line its banks and follow the khaki-colored river canyon—including the Whychus Creek Scenic Overlook Trail, where a one-mile accessible path offers views of the creek and Three Sisters peaks. Hop on the Saddle

Two scenic bikeways leave from town, giving hearty cyclists ample opportunity to explore Central Oregon's prolific beauty. The 37-mile Sisters to Smith Rock Scenic Bikeway starts in Sisters before zig-zagging eastward through sagebrush-covered canyons, forests of pine and juniper, and quiet communities before arriving at the popular Smith Rock State Park.

And the McKenzie Pass Scenic Bikeway takes cyclists through a forest of ponderosa pine, expansive lava flows in the heart of the Cascades, and an old-growth forest of Douglas fir over the course of 38 breathtaking miles; the ride mostly follows Oregon Route 242, which officially opens to vehicles in June—but which is accessible to cyclists (beyond a locked gate) as early as April or May.

Hit the Slopes

Discover Hoodoo Ski Area , which sits at the summit of Santiam Pass just outside of town and boasts more than 800 acres of skiable terrain, 34 runs, five lifts, the region's only night skiing, nordic skiing and the Autobahn Tubing Park—one of the largest tubing areas in the Pacific Northwest. Starting right in town, the 82-mile McKenzie Pass-Santiam Pass Scenic Byway heads into the Cascades for an up-close look at the region's dramatic beauty. Why Sisters Make the Best Travel Companions

So why do sisters make the best travel companions.

As an avid traveler, I’ve learned finding a great travel companion is not always the easiest task. My perfect travel companion is someone who can roll with the punches but is not too much of a pushover, enjoys engaging in deep conversation yet is also comfortable with silence, is a team player but can take charge when decisions need to be made, loves to indulge but is practical about expenditures, and is down for anything yet knows when its time to say no. I need someone who can keep me grounded when the going gets tough, who is willing to embrace the newness of everything, and wants to have as much fun as possible! After going over my list of requirements, I’ve come to realize that I’ve been describing my two sisters this whole time.

As my constant companions throughout life, it’s obvious that they’d be the ideal companions on the road. Sure, I’d be lying to say that we’re always happy campers when we’re together. I’ve had some pretty hellacious moments with these two but its never been too catastrophic that we haven’t been able to kiss and make-up. And that’s the beauty of sisterhood: that even with all the drama we serve one another, we can hug it out the end. I’m missing my sisters like crazy right now given the fact that they’re both in Brazil celebrating a milestone birthday — bottoms up baby Dre! — while I’m thousands of miles away in Vietnam. (Boo-hoo, sorta, but not really). But in honor of my baby sister’s big twenty-first birthday, here are ten reasons why sisters make the BEST travel companions!

1. THERE’S SOMEONE TO CAPTURE “THE MOMENTS”

From my own experiences traveling alone or being with people who aren’t as committed to recording every minute of an adventure, taking photos becomes somewhat of a nuisance. When you have your sisters around, it never feels like an imposition to ask for a photo every minute. It’s actually second nature that someone is cataloging the trip — if not for ourselves, then for mom and dad’s sake. Every moment captured is a way to document our family history. And the best part is that someone always has back-ups just in case phones get stolen or memory cards accidentally get erased!

2. YOUR WARDROBE WILL DOUBLE

… or in my case, triple! I count myself so incredibly lucky that both of my sisters have a killer sense of style and that they never refuse to share their clothes when we’re traveling. It’s way more practical to just trade clothing instead of overpacking. The woes of a heavy suitcase disappear completely when sisters are in tow. In fact, one of my favorite things about traveling with my sisters is that they style my outfits every day on the road. There’s nothing better than starting the day feeling beautiful because your sisters took the time and effort to make you feel your very best.

 3. THEY’LL HELP MANAGE STRESS LEVELS

While there may be times they’re adding to your stress instead of reducing it, they’re mostly trying to help relieve you of your anxieties. Sisters tend to be very emotionally attuned to one another. If someone is sensing tension, it triggers an empathetic reaction in the other(s) and prompts a need to share the burdens. As a person suffering from social anxiety disorder, I can get super stressed-out while I’m traveling. My sisters can immediately sense when I’m feeling overwhelmed and rush to my aid, no matter the circumstance.

 4. THEY KNOW WHAT YOUR LIMITS ARE

… meaning they can rightfully assess when something is too much for you handle or, if you’re short-changing yourself. It’s empowering to be supported endlessly but its also comforting to have a fall back when you’re feeling afraid of something. Its important to be in the company of people who have an understanding of your capabilities so doubt doesn’t cripple you but in the same vein, you aren’t endangering yourself. When I was nineteen, I dragged Mira and Andrea on a punishing climb up a volcano in Guatemala. Halfway up, I knew that it was more than I bargained for and Andrea was especially suffering, so I took it upon myself to hire a horse to take her the rest of the way up. I was able to address my mistake and prevent my sister from resenting me because I knew what her limits were.

5. THEY HAVE YOUR BEST INTERESTS AT HEART

In respect to all aspects of our lives, I believe that good siblings a) want you to have fun; b) want you to feel good; c) want you to be happy; d) want you to be healthy, and e) want you to succeed. I’ve seen sisters and brother move mountains if its in their power to do so, to ensure that these hopes are achieved. The benefit of having a sister as a travel companion is you have someone who genuinely cares for your overall well-being. When my sisters and I travel together, we become very doting of one another, almost to the point of coddling. As travel companions, sisters become more responsible of one another since we are personally invested in each other’s welfare.

6. THEY CAN TAKE YOUR HONESTY

No matter how close you are to someone, there’s always the fear that offense will be taken, especially while you’re traveling. I’ve seen the strongest friendships crumble because of some mishap on the road. With a sister as your traveling partner, you don’t have to walk on eggshells just to keep the peace. As sisters, you have had a lifetime to learn how to settle your difference. Also, if sh** hits the fan, they’re kinda stuck with you forever so its more in their favor to forgive and forget. When I’m not up for something, I don’t have to lie to my sisters. When I’m angry about something, I don’t have to suppress my frustrations. It’s healthy to be on an adventure where you can be more of yourself as opposed to the person your traveling partner wants you to be.

7. THERE’S NO SHAME IN ANYTHING YOU DO

Let’s be real: who hasn’t dreamed of being an Arabian princess??? Even with an angry Turkish photographer criticizing our inability to “smize** like we meant it,” we didn’t back down from a once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity! Now who else would convince you that putting on a smelly head scarf worn by millions of tourists in a musty underground reservoir would be a good idea? Your sisters have seen you make a fool of yourself a bunch of times. Chances are they’re used to it by now or you’re used to the judgement. Either way, they want you to have fun and they’re probably enduring the humiliation right beside you (see picture below).

8. THEY’RE ALWAYS DOWN TO TRY NEW THINGS WITH YOU

Footlong doner kebabs in Turkey, sketchy roadside pupusas in Guatemala, questionable conveyer belt sushi in Poland… okay, okay, so new things don’t always entail foodfoodfood (… maybe to the Pulido girls it does…). But the general statement is true: when we’re surrounded by people we are comfortable with, it’s easier to be goaded out of our comfort zones. It’s hard to try new things alone. But sisters provide the camaraderie we need to face the new and unfamiliar. Sisters are masters at the art of persuasion ie. use copious amounts of flattery, drop words of encouragement here and there, hype-up the fun, and go the guilt-trip route. Also, sisters usually don’t want to leave each other behind so they’re bound to accompany you whether or not they want to.

9. THEY WILL BE GENEROUS TOWARDS YOU

Its an uncontested truth that when you’re on the road with family, they will take care of you no matter the cost. When we were children, our travel expenses were covered by our parents. They not only wanted us to see the world, but ultimately, grow closer as a family. My sisters and I shared everything on these trips: a bed, clothes, food, souvenirs, photos, and most importantly, these memories of places that we may never return to. Because of our upbringing, in adulthood, we’ve continue to give to one another graciously and generously. My sisters never fail to amaze me with their thoughtfulness on our trips: they’ve paid for my massages, covered my meals, and even treated me to shopping sprees in the past! These actions speak volumes when you take into consideration that our trips (flights, transportation, food, etc.) are all covered by our own hard-earned cash. Now that’s love.

10. YOU’LL HAVE YOUR SUPPORT SYSTEM WITH YOU

When you have a sister as your travel companion, you’ll never be alone. They’ve been with you through thick and thin so when you’re on the road together, they will always have your back in times of need. The act of traveling is like being on an emotional rollercoaster — one minute you could be at your highest high, checking off a bucket list item you’ve only ever dreamed of and in a blink of an eye, you could be at your lowest low, having been mugged with no way to recover your lost belonging. In these ordeals, they will be laughing and crying with you. They won’t bat an eye if they have to defend your honor. You have your cheerleader/voice of reason/bodyguard/girl-friend/best friend neatly packaged in the form of a sister. The universe has created the perfect companion to follow you not only on your life journey, but also your journey around the world.

As the years pass, I’ve seen the dynamics in my household shift. We’ve begun to move onto the next chapters of our lives — but in separate directions. I’ve been based abroad for the past two years; Mira is on the verge her college graduation and is finishing up her last semester of school in Brazil; and Andrea is a few months away from embarking on her college study abroad. The only time we can remedy geographic estrangement with one another is during our trips together. As the physical distance widens between us, we find ourselves growing more nostalgic of the times –and places– we once shared. It is during my walks down memory lane that I’ve been able to grasp how much my sisters have been there for me and were the fundamental piece to all my best trips.From Bosnia to Belize, Turkey to Thailand and where to next, I daresay. All that’s sure is that I have not one, but two of the BEST travel companions , and they’re mine for a lifetime ♥

Aw, this post is really sweet! I’m not going to lie I am a bit jealous of you and your sisters relationships! I have an older sister, and she’s awesome, but we have a bit if an age difference so we never really were that close. Also, no one in my family is interested in travel besides me! As a matter of fact they think I am crazy for wanting to go to other places, haha a continuous struggle to try and explain why I am so attracted to travel! I always go to places thinking it would be fun if my family were here to enjoy this with me, but I know there’s no way in hell that’s going to happen! lol You and your sisters look so fun and cute together! Also, I can’t really borrow Scott’s clothes, so my wardrobe will be the same old stuff 🙁 hahahaha

What’s your age difference between you and your sister? I have a little brother and we’re 12 years apart. I’m always thinking about how hard it must be for him to have three older sisters who are so close to one another and what that must feel like… Wait, no one in your family travels?!? That’s so crazy to wrap my mind around since I view you as someone who’s been raised to vagabond! But then again, look at how you’re paving the road for others who are in the same boat — people hankering to get out but no one else has done it around them so I really salute you for chronicling your journey so that others out there can see that its possible for them too! Awww, thanks boo! My sisters need to take credit for all my outfits though! Seriously, I’m at least wearing one item of clothing belonging to them in every single picture. LOLOLOLOL do you know how scary it is to be yelled at by a Turkish man because your eyes are not expressive enough? The Turks can’t relate! All their women are so drop-dead gorgeous with their almond eyes. Those are the kind of eyes that are MADE to smize!

Great post, but I guess I can’t comment because I have two…brothers, haha. Don’t know what it’s like traveling with sisters, but I gotta say that I used to love travelling with my brothers (especially because of reasons 4,6, and 8). It’s too bad that we are all married and grown up now, and that they are both in the USA and I’m in Korea, because I rarely get to see them, and when I do it’s not like solo traveling. Someday I’d like to travel with them like you have with your two sisters! Great writing, thanks for sharing!

I didn’t mean to make this post so gender-bias but I’m glad to hear that some of the reasons resonate with your own siblings. We have a younger brother (the only boy in the family) and I’d like to think that these reasons apply to him as well (even the wardrobe expansion because of the tiny, lanky Asian boy that he is — we steal his shirts :P). You are going to have that someday with your brothers and it will be like old times I’m sure. Have they had the chance to visit you in Korea yet?

I don’t have a sister. I only have a brother whose work brings him all over the world. The only person left is my husband who was my boyfriend since I was 20. But I can’t swap clothes with him, haha! Kudos to your parents who gave you so much to remember with your sisters. I’m sure your next get-together with your sisters will be full of fun and laughter and amazing photos! Cheers!

But my dad worked in the airline industry and his biggest passion was travel and my mom worked abroad in Saudi and has traveled extensively as well so traveling has played a very big role throughout my life. I cannot wait for that next time! My family’s planning to visit me in Vietnam for Christmas which I’m praying works out!

This was such a great post to read, and I am extremely jealous that I don’t have a sister to travel with..although I travel with my brother and he’s equally fun and carries all my stuff! I found it interesting that they help to manage stress levels…I find my brother doesn’t help when I’m stressed; he adds fuel to the fire!

Dude brothers are the best! I saw the pic of you and your brother celebrating your birthday together! That’s awesome that he’s a gentleman and carries your stuff around… you raised him right 😉 Oh man, my sisters stress me out — they definitely know that — but they’re the only ones who can calm me down which is ironic. Then again, women are very sensitive to other women’s mood shifts. We’re all natural keepers of the peace! Men are sometimes clueless! 😛

Third, you made me miss not just my sister but my whole family.
