  • Quito to Baños: The Best Ways To Travel

' src=

The road between Quito and Baños is one of the most travelled roads by tourists in Ecuador. It’s safe to say the journey is worth it. Baños, short for Baños de Agua Santa, is incredible!

Baños is known for all the outdoor activities in the area. Canyoning, paragliding, the waterfalls and the Amazon rainforest. It’s often high on people’s list of reasons to go to Ecuador .

If you’re not an adrenaline junkie, no worries! Baños is a great place for everyone. We visited for about a week and loved every second.

Callie visited 10 years ago and this time, she was amazed by how much it has changed. Locals now visit Baños for days out. Back then, it was ‘just’ a town with some outdoor activities. The amount of tour and activity shops has skyrocketed.

This is not really a problem, because more competition means lower prices, right?!

Getting from Quito to Baños is not a difficult journey. I’ll go into detail below!

How to Get From Quito To Baños

There are 3 viable ways to get to Baños from Quito. Neither of them is particularly difficult, but the prices and comfort levels differ. After reading, you’ll be confident in picking a mode of transportation!

By far the most popular way to get to Baños is by public bus. The journey will take about 4 hours and will cost $5 per person. We were advised by a local to take a morning bus because the afternoon buses get crowded. Let’s head off:

Make your way to Quitumbe bus terminal

The easiest way to get to Quitumbe bus terminal is via taxi or Uber. We took an Uber from the historic centre to the bus station which cost us $5. A regular taxi might be a little cheaper since you can agree on a price beforehand.

It’s also possible to go by public bus. But in our experience, these buses are PACKED. We didn’t feel comfortable taking our big backpacks and daypacks on a crowded bus.

If you’d like to take the bus, you can take bus line C to Quitumbe from the historic centre. For other routes, check the public transport map below:

a detailed public transport map for Quito

Head upstairs for the ticket booths

Follow the signs for ‘boletos’ or ‘boleterias’ up the stairs. On your left, you’ll find multiple ticket booths selling tickets to Baños. These are all for different companies, so make sure you check their schedules. Some bus companies only go once an hour, so you’ll have to wait if you buy from them.

We went with the Amazonas bus company because they were the next to leave. We paid $5 each for a ticket, and off we went!

You will get assigned seats called ‘asiento(s)’ or sometimes ‘silla(s)’. The person in the booth will tell you which platform the bus will leave from. If not, ask ‘¿Cual plataforma?’.

The exit to the platforms is the one next to the booths, so off you go! You will need the little receipt to enter the area with the buses.

Arrive in Baños

The journey will take up to 4 hours, depending on traffic and how many people on the way need to get on the bus. The Amazonas bus company plays films during your journey, but these are in Spanish. We enjoyed them nonetheless.

When you arrive in Baños, you’ll be dropped off at the bus terminal. There will be taxi’s around to take you to your destination. Baños is very safe, so it’s fine to walk if you’d like to save a little money.

By private transport

Another way of getting to Baños is by private transport. Companies like Daytrip offer this service. We’ve used them in Costa Rica and were very happy with their service and communication.

It’s a very comfortable way of travelling, but not for travellers on a budget! It will cost around $150 per car, which will fit 4 people.

The good thing about this is that it is a door-to-door service. You get picked up from your accommodation in Quito and dropped off at your hotel in Baños.

Ecuador Hop

Last but not least: Ecuador Hop. This company offers hop-on hop-off bus services to many destinations in Ecuador.

You can get passes all the way to Montañita with 7 stops between Quito and there, including Baños. The beauty of this service is: you get to decide how long you stay at each destination. You make your own schedule and can change it at any time if you decide to stay longer at a stop.

The Full South To Montañita includes 8 stops, including Baños, for $159. So only $9 more than a private driver to Baños, and this includes the whole south of Ecuador!

This pass is only an example. There are many more , like Quito to Cuenca with a stop in Baños for $109. This includes a stop at Cotopaxi, Quilotoa, Baños, Riobamba and Alauisi.

We are in no way affiliated with Ecuador Hop. I just really like the service they offer.

Where to Stay in Baños

Baños is quite touristy, so there are a lot of accommodation options. Some of them are not great, though! These are my 3 favourite options:

📍 Budget: Hostal D’Mathias

We stayed in this hostel. We opted for a private room, but dorm beds are also available. They offer cheap tours. We did their jungle day tour, which was amazing! They only offer these low prices to guests.

📍 Mid-class: Montano Camping & Hostel

This accommodation is a 10-minute walk from the centre, just outside of town. It’s quiet, affordable, and clean. We stayed here for one night before we moved into Hostal D’Mathias. We would’ve extended our stay, but they were fully booked!

📍 High-end: Hotel De Mi Pueblo

This accommodation is just perfect. You get a whole suite with a living room and jacuzzi. Just outside of the busy centre so it should be nice and quiet. Vegan & vegetarian breakfast is available!

Top 5 Things to Do in Baños

Now you got to Baños, and picked a place to stay, so next up: something to keep you busy.

A Day in the Amazon Rainforest

This was the best activity we’ve done in Baños! You’ll get a FULL DAY of visiting the Ecuadorian Amazon jungle. Visit a waterfall, an indigenous community, and a few different viewpoints.

The tour costs $40 for a full day, which is already cheap. But if you stay at Hostal D’Mathias and book through them, you only pay $22! Bargain!

If you prefer to book a tour at one of the shops in Baños, I ask only one thing. Try to find a tour that DOES NOT include a wildlife rescue. Most rescues that accept visitors are more like zoos than rescues. Some don’t have the animals’ best interests in mind.

Want to know more about tourism and animals? Callie wrote a post about how to do this the right way .

Another incredibly popular thing to do in Baños is rafting. Race down the river in a boat with a group of people! These trips don’t require any previous experience. The guides are knowledgeable, well-trained, and have safety as their number 1 priority.

✅ Come play in a river with this rafting experience!

The Waterfall Route

This activity is quite cheap. All you need is to rent a mountain bike from one of the many tour shops for only $5-$10 per day. You’ll need a few dollars for entry fees and $2 for a shuttle back to Baños.

The whole way is downhill, which is why it’s recommended to take one of the shuttles back. Make sure the brakes of your bike work and you have a helmet!

For the adrenaline junkies: canyoning. Zip down waterfalls, cross canyons, and climb rocky walls. Canyoning is definitely an adrenaline-filled activity.

Lunch is included, with vegan and vegetarian options available.

✅ Cross canyons, jump off rocks, and zip down waterfalls with this canyoning tour!

Visit the Thermal Baths of Baños

The town is named after its thermal baths. Because Baños the Agua Santa means baths of holy water! These hot springs are heated by volcanic activity underground.

Grab your bathing suit and head to the hot springs! Entry fees are between $3 and $4, depending on which of the two you pick.

Quito to Baños: FAQs

I tried to give you all the information, but you might have some lingering questions. Let me do my utmost to answer them!

How long is the bus ride from Quito to Baños?

The bus takes about 4 hours. But it depends on traffic. The later buses may hit traffic and take longer! Buses stop along the route for whoever wants to get on or off, which makes the journey longer.

How much does the journey to Baños cost?

The bus costs only $5. It’s the most affordable way to make the journey. Private transfer is about $150, and the price of the journey with Ecuador Hop depends on the type of pass you buy.

What type of bus is used between Quito and Baños?

The exact type of bus differs per company, but they’re all ‘normal’ buses. No minibuses or shuttle buses!

The buses are generally just as comfortable as each other. Some offer air conditioning while others don’t. But it’s not hot, so opening a window will give you enough fresh air!

Is Baños worth visiting?

Yes! There are so many things to do in Baños that you won’t get bored. Baños was my favourite destination in Ecuador, after the Galapagos ( specifically Bartolome! ).

Safety Tips for Quito to Baños

The buses in Ecuador are considered to be safe. However, it’s always a good idea to take some precautions.

Don’t store your bag under the seat, nor the overhead compartments

There have been cases of people behind travellers cutting open bags stored under the seat. Therefore, keep your bag between your legs, or store it ‘under’ the bus.

The same is the case for the overhead compartments. Some people have had their stuff stolen from their bags when it was stored above them. You’ll notice the locals don’t use these either.

Don’t flash your valuables and electronics

You can become a target for pickpockets. They most likely won’t do anything while on the bus, but they may follow you when you arrive at your destination.

Just keep your stuff in your pockets, and you will be fine. As I said, the buses are safe but don’t create opportunities for bad people.

Don’t wear noise-cancelling headphones

It’s best to not wear any headphones at all, but if you do, make sure they’re not noise cancelling. Make sure you’re always aware of your surroundings!

The headphones themselves can also make you a target for pickpockets. When you’re done with them, put them in your bag and not in your pockets. Minimize the chances of getting pickpocketed!

Quito to Banos

1. Quito to Banos by public bus

You can travel from Quito to Banos via public bus. This is the cheapest option for those on a budget and the luxury of time.

Public buses in Ecuador are frequently used, but you’ll need to be careful of your belongings and expect a few bumps on the road (literally and metaphorically speaking).

So, how do you get the bus from Quito to Banos?  Here are my step-by-step instructions:

  • Travel to the Quitumbe bus station. To get here, either take a taxi (around 10 USD) or jump on the tram.
  • There are buses that depart Quitumbe for Banos every day from 5 am – 6 pm. They run frequently throughout the day.
  • Buy a ticket for your bus (roughly 4-6 USD). Make sure you know a little Spanish to do this.
  • The bus then takes around 4 hours to reach Banos from Quito, depending on traffic and the road conditions at the time.

The bus itself is fine  – it’s not anything special, but it’s doable. Just keep an eye on your belongings at all times – it’s known that thieves operate on buses by slashing bags kept under the seats. Keep everything on your lap!

2. Quito to Banos by tourist shuttle

Another way to get from Quito to Banos is by  tourist shuttle .  Tourist shuttles from Quito to Banos are large coaches which are safe, modern and clean. They shouldn’t cost more than $5-10 USD per person.

To look at prices and check the availability of tourist buses from Quito to Banos, I recommend using  Bookaway . If you pre-book online , you don’t have to extensively test your Spanish skills at the bus station, and you can walk directly onto your transfer!

➡ You can book your tourist bus ticket from Quito to Banos here !

3. Quito to Banos by private transfer

Another way to get from Quito to Banos is to travel via  private transfer.   This is perfect if there is more than one of you, you want your own space or you are short on time!

A private transfer from Quito to Banos costs roughly £30-35 ($35-40 USD).

Similar to a taxi,  private transfers  will pick you up from your hotel or hostel in Quito and take you directly to your accommodation in Banos.  But of course, it’s a little more expensive!

Private transfers from Quito to Banos can take from 2-3 hours  (depending on traffic, road conditions and other factors). Most hostels and hotels can organise this, or you can book a private transfer online here.

➡ Book a  private transfer now!

4. Quito to Banos by an organised tour

If you’re the kind of person who prefers everything organised for them, you can reach Banos from Quito via an organised tour . This is also the perfect option if you are short on time.

There are tours from Quito to Banos that include full days of hiking, white water rafting and other adventure activities. All day tours include transfers, lunch, snacks and a guide to ensure you have the best day possible.

Some of the tours from Quito to Banos include:

  • Banos Full-Day Hiking Tour

Where to stay in Quito

Quito is a big city. Whilst we were there, we stayed in two different areas;  the main city centre and La Floresta.

If you’re staying short term, I recommend the city centre.  This is the main cultural ‘hub’ (although there is nothing going on at night) and has a lively atmosphere during the day.

For digital nomads and those staying over 2 nights in Quito, I recommend La Floresta.  This is a buzzing part of Quito full of bars, restaurants and cafes.

Sadly, we were told – by locals themselves – to  not walk around Quito at night.  I have no idea what it is but for a capital city, Quito at night is  exceptionally  quiet. Even in the busy parts!

If you’re visiting Quito, I highly recommend cooking your own meals in the evenings or staying at a hostel that runs family dinners at night.  When writing this, we did not feel safe walking around Quito at night (but safety is subjective).

Some of the  best accommodations in Quito include:

  • Viajero Hostel  (city centre): a beautiful hostel that includes free breakfast!
  • Community Hostel  (city centre): the perfect social hostel for the Amazon Rainforest tour!
  • Secret Garden : (city centre): around a 15-minute walk to the main square
  • Hotel Stubel Suites & Cafe  (La Floresta): a hotel with offers stunning views of the Guápulo Valley.
  • NH Collection Quito Royal  (La Floresta): a more luxurious stay with a health club, free WiFi and free breakfast.

Quito to Banos

Where to stay in Banos

Banos is a small, picturesque town surrounded by volcanoes and the Andes mountains. It’s a great place to stay for a few nights as a backpacker looking for adventure. Some of the best accommodations include:

  • Mama Tungu Hostel : the perfect hostel in Banos for solo travellers, digital nomads and couples. Well-located, great facilities and comfy rooms!
  • Erupcion Art Hotel & Hostel: the best social hostel with a rooftop in Banos!
  • Papacho’s Hostel : another great hostel in Banos for solo travellers and couples wanting to be in the middle of all of the action.
  • La Posada del Arte : A great hotel in Banos for couples or those who don’t want to stay in a hostel.

2) How much is a taxi from Quito to Banos?

3) Is Banos worth going to?

Yes! Banos is absolutely worth visiting if you are a fan of nature, hiking, waterfalls, rainforest and wildlife. It’s known as the ‘adventure’ capital of Ecuador, and with good reason! It’s a beautiful small town with incredible scenery and is undoubtedly worth visiting when in Ecuador.

What to pack for Ecuador

Packing for Ecuador is similar to most Central/South American countries, although you need to pack some warmer clothes for locations like Quito.

Luckily for you, I’ve written an entire, lengthy blog post about what to pack for Ecuador ; from daily clothes to gadgets and tech, the right kind of backpack and things you may have forgotten. You can check out my full Ecuador packing list here!

Don’t forget travel insurance for South America!

If you’re visiting South America as a backpacker, or even for a short vacation, it is  so  important to have  travel insurance .   And  if you ended up on a post that’s called ‘epic party tips’, you know (just as well as I do) that you  definitely  need travel insurance.

Personally, I recommend  SafetyWing .  As a digital nomad and world traveller myself, I can confirm it is the best travel insurance out there. And one of the cheapest – they have deals that start at  just $42 USD per month.

I know, I know, you’re thinking  ‘but I can’t afford that!’ . I was the same! It’s tough to fork out $42 a month on something ‘you might not need’. But what if something DOES happen? That extra Mezcal shot results in you falling down the stairs, or you eat something dodgy from a street food van.

If you need medical help at  any point  whilst in South America,  you need  travel insurance.

With  SafetyWing , you’re covered on travel emergencies, basic medical costs and medical expenses throughout your trip, so you can travel without worry (at a backpacker’s price!)

Don’t even think twice about getting travel insurance for South America . Trust me, I have heard enough horror stories about backpackers who haven’t had insurance and have ended up in a  lot  of debt. Don’t be that person!

If you’ve been putting the job off because it takes a lot of time and effort to research the  best travel insurance companies , I understand. That’s why I’ve done the hard work for you. Sign up for  SafetyWing , and the job is done!

Get on the bus from Quito to Banos in 2023 | Shared and Private Shuttle Options Too!

travel from quito to banos

Baños, Ecuador has become a magnet for tourists visiting Ecuador, and for good reason. You can relax in the natural springs underneath the waterfall, hike up directly from town to see the active volcano, zipline through the jungle, bicycle downhill to see a plethora of waterfalls. Many make Baños their choice for an exotic wedding, or even to meet with other backpackers for reunions and compare notes.

Getting to Baños is still a challenge, but has gotten easier with now direct options by bus, and even semi-private or private shuttles available from Quito and Cuenca.

We'll aim to spell out in this article all these various methods of transport to Baños so you can include the one that best suits you for your upcoming trip to Ecuador, and easily reserve your seat online!

All you need to know about buses in Ecuador

Ecuador's buses are plentiful and everyone uses them to get everywhere in Ecuador, as long as you have the right tools and some time to travel by land. However, don't expect luxury liners like you may have been exposed to in wealthier Latin American countries like Argentina, Brazil, or Chile. Even Colombia and Peru, which surround Ecuador, have bus coaches that are larger and more modern than you'll encounter in Ecuador because in those countries the traveling distances are longer. Ecuador's buses on the whole are older models with aging upholstery and spotty wi-fi, but they get the job done and they help you appreciate the can-do ethic of this small country.

Some bus companies, however, are serious about regularly upgrading their fleets and you may be surprised to get on a beautifully modern vessel that stands out from the rest of the buses around it. It's near impossible to predict or strategize how to land a seat on one of these exceptional coaches, as bus companies change which route they're used on in the blink of an eye and without much notice. Generally, the longer the trip and if the origin and destination are large cities, like from Quito to Manta or Guayaquil to Loja, the more likely you could be treated to a better coach. Needless to say, the more travelers that ride buses, the more that bus companies will be able to upgrade their fleet, so consider your ride a contribution to the cause.

How long is the bus ride from Quito to Baños?

The ride from Quito to Baños is short enough that buses don't have much reason to stop, although some may drop people off in Latacunga. This allows for a pretty consistent 3.5 hours from start to finish. In between, you'll be treated to beautiful views of Cotopaxi on sunny days, or the Illinizas, two beautiful sister peaks of the Andes range. You'll also pass through Salcedo, a village famous in Ecuador for the production of a special tri-color ice cream popsicle made by hand. The bus may stop to let vendors of this ice cream on for passengers to buy as a snack, along with other treats like empanadas de viento, or roasted soft corn seeds called tostado. Before you know it, you'll arrive in the cloud forest that starts to the east of Ambato and then into the small town of Baños.

How often do buses depart from Quito to Baños?

Well, that's the tricky part. Technically, there are departures morning, afternoon, and at night, but that doesn't mean they're all operational, available, or reservable. Some scheduled departures force you to pay for double the distance to Puyo or Tena just to get to Baños. Others require a transfer in Ambato. Just like in many restaurants in Ecuador, the fact that they have something on the menu doesn't mean they have the ingredients or the chef to cook it that day, and so it is the same for the delicious bus route to Baños. Several bus companies don't commit to operating the scheduled departure until a day in advance, or in some cases the day of the trip.

That's why we recommend you think about a range of flexible times, and that you reserve online as our agents know which bus companies can be negotiated with more than others, and which ones are planning out farther in advance than others.

Also, this is such a popular route that many travelers choose to bypass the capricious bus schedules and just reserve a shared or private shuttle that will be more direct and predictable. While these are more expensive than the bus, they offer more convenient pick-up points and more comfortable riding conditions. The best thing is they remove the guesswork and anxiety often experienced with buses and terminals, and just get you to Baños directly and without any fuss.

How much does the bus or shuttle cost from Quito to Baños?

Getting a bus ticket on AndesTransit will barely put a dent in your pocket for between $9 and $13 USD. And that includes us getting the ticket for you when you reserve online, so you have less bother at the terminal and a reserved seat is guaranteed. If you are opting for the shared shuttle, these pick you up at select fixed locations in the city and run about $32 per seat. If you want a ride exclusively for you and your family or friends, a private shuttle that picks you up from your hotel in Quito or the airport and drops you off wherever you're staying in Baños starts at $89 for the entire vehicle, driver included of course. You can arrange for a private shuttle at our partner site, ecuadorbus.com

What to see in Baños

The mysterious and active volcano Tungurahua that hovers over the city of Baños, Ecuador.

Like I said earlier, Baños is a small town but they are always geared up and ready for tourists. Trust me, they know you're coming even before you know you're going. There are tons of things to do both in Baños and around town, but we'll mention our top five ideas that are a mix of on and off the beaten path.

#1 - Steam and soak in the Hot Springs of Baños

Baños de Agua Santa is the formal and full name of this small town, which literally translates "baths of sacred water". That says about everything you need to know why millions have flocked here over the centuries, seeking out the curative and plentiful geothermal hot springs that are powered by the active Tungurahua volcano that looms over the town. You have a choice between the public hot spring facility, the full name of which is Termas Antigua de la Virgen, at the southeastern corner of the village at the base of the iconic waterfall, and charges a mere $4 entry fee. You are required to wear a hair covering, but can buy one there for $1 if you didn't bring one along. As this is a public place, the lighting is dim at night and gets kind of overused from human foot traffic. Right next door about a block away is something cleaner with a broader range of facilities like a swimming pool, turcos (steam rooms), saunas, jacuzzis, and more. It costs a little more but is also less frenetic. Most hotels and resorts in the area know that their guests are coming for the thermal waters, so almost all of them will tap into the source somehow and turn it into hot and cold springs, even if they're somewhat artificial.

#2 - Hike to view the Tungurahua volcano and swing off the edge of the world

Immediately on the edge of Baños, you can hike up the hillside to gain incredible vistas of Volcan Tungurahua, the dramatic and active volcano that spews its fiery spit into the air at a distance and keeps the namesake waters underneath the surface bubbling warm. Go up all the way to the end of the Runtún road to get the best viewing site known as La Casa de Arbol (the treehouse) , which is a wooden viewing deck with what is probably the most photographed rope swing in the world! You can strap yourself in and swing at the end of the world over the valley for a great and scenic thrill.

#3 - Melt away into a massage

Thermal baths and massage are inseparable around the world, and Baños is no exception. On every street corner and in between street corners you'll find a massage therapist or two with great offers to tempt you to come in and get the knots kneaded out from your tired muscles. One of the most admired facilities in the village is El Refugio on the northern side of the highway going through town, with family pools, and spa services ranging from traditional foot and back anti-stress workdowns, to mud baths and even bowel cleansing rituals! But not to play favorites, Baños has become a magnet for lots of competing therapy practices who all do the splendors of creating an environment of relaxation and a variety of therapies sure to please you. Just try a number of them.

#4 - Rent a bike and cycle down to Pailon del Diablo

For the physically and courageously fit, there are many places in town where you can rent a bicycle and go "downhill" on the highway on what they call the route of the waterfalls. It's true there are lots of romantic cascades either along the highway to see or a short trail off the highway. The usual place where people end their bike journey is the famous "El Pailon del Diablo", a thunderous and titanic waterfall in the tiny town of Rio Verde. You can even get tickets here for a special and privileged light show where at night they make the waterfall sparkle with wild color. Be aware you will be sharing the highway with constant buses and speeding vehicles, with steep cliffs and narrow shoulders, and your legs and knees will be screaming in pain if you are not prepared. You can simply order an around-town driver from Baños to get to Rio Verde if you are not a fitness junkie.

#5 - Visit the ancient and unique community of Salasaca

Take a short ride on a bus from Baños to Ambato , but get off in the community of Salasaca (also often spelled Salasaka) just before the bus starts getting into the city of Ambato proper. The Salasaca people are a fiercely independent indigenous community whose dress and traditions differ from all the other Ecuadorians around them. You will at once notice their trademark black cloaks or ponchos and their broad-brimmed hats as you meander about town. Head over to the Museum of Salasaca to explore their culture and how they have preserved it. When you're done there, just walk back west and you'll find a number of artisan markets where you can buy hand-crafted goods, clothes, and souvenirs that have the distinctive traits of the Salasaka traditions. Any passing bus will usually have at least enough standing room to get you back to Baños so quickly you won't need to sit down.

Definitely don't pass up a trip to Baños, if not from Quito then from Cuenca or from Guayaquil , that both have several departures to choose from. If the bus doesn't suit you or you are tight on time, many of these larger cities also offer shared and private shuttle arrangements that can get you there in as little as a few hours, with time to stop and take photos in between.

Quito to Baños in Ecuador: The Transportation Methods

mirador de baños, things to do banos, quito to baños

Arriving in a new country can be scary, especially if you are alone and don’t know the language. I knew enough Spanish to get by but this was my first real experience traveling in a foreign country as a solo traveler. My main goal when arriving in Ecuador was to figure out how to get from Quito to Baños.

Baños is considered the adventure capital of Ecuador. Thankfully this small town isn’t too far from where most people will be flying into, Quito.

There are a few methods of getting from Quito to Baños that I will explain in full detail.

Table of Contents

Where is Baños Located?

The full name of this town is called Baños de Agua Santa which translates to “Holy Water Baths”. This makes sense when you find out there are many famous thermal baths here that are popular to hang out at.

Baños is located 3 hours by car from Quito, 1 hour from Ambato, and 6 hours from Cuenca. This town is very centrally located in the country.

There are a lot of fun things to do in Baños such as Pailón del Diablo , Mirador de Baños , and Cascada del Silencio .

What are the Options for Traveling in Ecuador?

There are technically many different types of transportation that you can take in Ecuador. I will only be going over a few of how to get from Quito to Baños.

Below are all of the possible ways to move around Ecuador:

The Different Quito Bus Stations

Depending on where you’re going in Ecuador from Quito will determine which bus station you want to head to. We will be focusing on the Quitumbe station.

  • Quitumbe : This is the bus station that you will want to head to if you’re going to Baños, Cuenca, parts of the Amazon, and the mountainous regions of Ecuador.
  • Rio Coca : You will want to go here if you’re looking to visit the outskirts of Quito to places like Papallacta and Cumbaya.
  • Terminal Terrestre Carcelén : This is where you’ll want to come if trying to visit the towns of Otavalo, Ibarra, Santo Domingo, and Tulcán.
  • Ofelia : If you’re looking to visit the famous Mindo, then Ofelia is the bus station you’ll want to go to.

My Suggested Hiking Gear

How to get from quito to baños.

Baños is a very popular tourist attraction, so you will not have trouble finding other people that are going to the same place. If you ever have any questions, always be sure to talk to someone at your accommodation.

Bus from Quito to Baños

This is the option that I took as I flew into Quito. It is quite easy to get from Quito to Baños by bus. Below will be a set of steps to take to get there.

  • This is only needed if you’re north of Quito where some hostels are. Quitumbe is more to the south of Quito.
  • Once at the bus terminal, you will need to look for the yellow Baños office inside. This cost to Baños will be $5 and they run all day.
  • This is around a 3 to 3-1/2-hour journey with only one stop in Ambato.

Where is Quitumbe Bus Station

Quito to Baños Bus Schedule

Buses are very frequent in the popular town of Baños. There is no need to worry as buses run from 6 am to 5 pm.

It will take around 3 hours to get to Baños so plan ahead.

Fly from Quito to Baños

This option isn’t recommended as there is no local airport in Baños. The closest airport is in Puyo which is 1 hour away. Tickets can be very expensive.

I have never heard of anyone taking this route normally besides an emergency flight back to Quito during the 2022 protests.

Private Transport:

There are options when arriving in Quito to take private transport to Baños. These will be more expensive than the bus but provide security for those who want it.

Companies like Daytrip offer services with a private driver for around $150.

Best Places to Stay in Baños, Ecuador

  • Samari Spa Resort : Looking to lay back and relax? This is THE best spa experience in Baños. With a buffett breakfast included, what more could you want?
  • Papachos Hostel : This is where I volunteered and I loved it. If you’re looking for a laidback vibe then this is the place. Located on the outskirts of town, in a quiet area for $7.50 a night.
  • Great Hostels : The most popular sport in the town, the Great Hostels are perfect for socializing. The cost is amazing too. For $8 to $10 you get free breakfast and a place to sleep.
  • Erupcion Art Hotel & Hostel : Considered to have one of the most iconic rooftops in all of Baños, this is a place not to miss. Great location as it is located in the square downtown for $9 to $10 a night.

Final Thoughts on Getting From Quito to Baños

Ecuador and much of South America are very easy to get around for cheap. I really liked the bus system in Ecuador as it was efficient and cheap. It is very comparable to that of Peru. I would recommend taking the buses as I felt very safe when taking mine from Quito to Baños as well as to the border of Peru.

Hi! Where did you store your luggage on the Quito to Banos bus? I’ll be traveling solo so I want to make sure all is well along the way. Thanks so much!

I kept my big bag below the bus and my small bag by my feet. Don’t put your small bag up above you. Always keep it by your side. They also give you a ticket for your big bag that is stored below the bus. Hope this helps!

Quito airport to banos.

There are four main ways to get from the Quito Airport to Baños, they all have advantages and disadvantages, that we mention on this short but helpfull article and, hope you make the best decision for getting from Quito airport to Baños

3.- Transfer service/Taxi

4.- Private Transportation

1. Bus from Quito Airport to Baños

Undoubtedly traveling by bus is the cheapest way to travel in most countries and, Ecuador is not the exception, unfortunately this travel method is not always the most comfortable, fastest or the safest, for several reasons.

A tourist can be spotted at once, even when they have the same skin or hair color, you can imagine when they are not, why? Because of your luggage or big backpacks, will tell, and this( not always), but yes, it might be a reason for you to be a target.

One suggestion, if you are thinking on traveling by bus in Ecuador try to have only a back pack that you can carry on your lap or in front of your seat, and don’t send it to be stored under the bus.

After this tip lets get into how, you can to get to Baños Ecuador by bus from the Quito Airport.

Once outside the Quito airport, you will see one or several green buses (on the right hand), you must take the green bus that leaves from the Airport to the terminal from Quitumbe in Quito, but first read the sign located in front of the bus, this sign should say Terminal Quitumbe, the departure of this bus is not very frequent, so if you do not see it at the bus stop, you should wait for it.

From the time you leave the airport to the Quitumbe terminal located to the south of the city it will be a hour ride in average.

Once at the terminal, look for the Baños transportation, or ask for Transportes Baños where you must buy the ticket to the city of Baños, make sure your ticket is to Baños, because the same company goes to several other places in Ecuador, the frequency of this bus is every hour. Once you buy the ticket you must wait on the platform number you were told, where you bought the ticket, if you are not told, ask for it. From the Quitumbe Terminal will take you about five hours to reach the city of Baños, in total the bus riding time since you leave from the Quito Airport, until you reach the Baños Bus terminal will take you 6 hours more or less.

2. Tour Baños from Quito City Airport

This is probably the best option that we put up for you to consider, if you are looking to save yourself all the hassle, and your budget is enough to travel comfortably and safely from Quito airport to Baños on a tour we recommend at leas spending a couple days in Baños because there is a lot of activities and it is also an enjoyable town, therefore we can arrange a 2 day 1 night Adventure tour to baños or Even a 3 day 2 night adventure that includes part of the Jungle, also customizable to suit your needs, expectations and goals.

The Baños tours have the options to be picked up from the Quito airport in a private transportation, where you will meet with a proffesional Guide and driver, you will drive  to Baños scorted by a local guide and driver with whom you will learn about some cultural and geographical aspects, and make a couple stops @ points of interes, during the journey, as well as stops to use a toilet, take photos, or serve yourself  local snacks  along the way.

Traveling on a planned tour and itinerary in a private and comfortable vehicle, not only will save you from all the hassle but also will save you traveling time which can be used to enjoy more activities while in Baños.

Traveling time from Quito to Baños on a tour, between 3.5 hours from Quito airport to Baños.

After getting to Baños you will start with the planned activities based on the itinerary, everything will be planned before hand, as accommodation and activities. Tour price is still a great and affordable deal, if you compare quality vs price.

3. Taxi/Transfer  from Quito Airport to Baños

Booking  a private ride from the Quito Airport to Baños is another option you have, which as any other option can have its advantages and disadvantages, such as, taxi drivers not always speak English and for some travelers,  the language can be a limitation, it is a one-way service, you need to plan everything yourself before getting to Baños, but if you are a good planner and did your research before getting there, activities for Baños will not be a problem.

On a taxi you are supposed to pay what the taximeter shows or the price that you have previously agreed. A suggestion here, it is best to discuss the price in advance so that there are no drawbacks in the end. If you don’t know the language or the other way around, find a pen and paper or write it on your cellphone and agree on the price with the driver before hand. Once you are all set, let your ride start.

4. Private Transportation from Quito Airport to Baños

If the option you have chosen is to travel on your own by renting a car, and you would like to try your luck driving on the streets of Ecuador, I wish you the best of lucks, but it is also a valid option. Just remember,  you will have to overcome some small obstacles, such as tolls, in case you need mechanical help, like changing a tire you will have to do it yourself, and if you plan to use the GPS of your phone, be a little careful when doing it, and use your common sense as well. Our suggestion is, if you see a road that does not seem to be in very good condition but the GPS is sending  you there, the best option is to ask locals, think about it and be careful, there have been accidents and occasions in which GPS tries to take you through the shortest road, and this are not always in a good condition for vehicles, causing accidents to tourists that only rely on GPS and decide not to following their common sense, as a tip stay on asphalt roads, at least from city to city there are normally asphalt roads. And travel daytime day time so you can see things better.

Welcome to Baños Ecuador and enjoy your stay!

10 Things You Can't Miss In Ecuador: From Trekking To Rainforests

E cuador deserves more attention than it gets when it comes to backpacking South America. It might even be South America's most breathtaking country . While Peru and Colombia have found their way onto most avid traveler’s bucket lists, Ecuador is frequently overlooked despite being home to part of the Amazon Rainforest, incredible trekking routes, and historic cities.

To understand why Ecuador should be at the top of the list of places to visit in South America, look at these things to do there that travelers can’t miss.

Trekking The Quilotoa Loop

South America is a world-renowned destination for trekking. While most people are familiar with the Inca Trail in Peru, the Quilotoa Loop in Ecuador offers a lesser-traveled route with more affordable prices.

A common route for this trek is traveling 34 km between Sigchos and Quilotoa over the course of three days. There are small towns with refugios to stop in each night, so there is no need to carry heavy camping gear as travelers must do on the W Trek in Chile .
