More than just gas stations, travel centers now feature fresh cooked meals

With traffic between Canyon and Amarillo soaring on Interstate 27, and I-40 as well traveled as ever, new travel centers are springing up like tumbleweeds. The new breed of travel centers differs from the well-known mom and pop stations, or even the ever-famous Love’s Stations, one of which lies on Hollywood Road and still serves a lot of customers. The main difference seems to be the advent of small restaurants serving fresh cooked specials such as chicken, burritos and tacos and hamburgers, among other items.

Their specialized kitchens have their own specialties and aren’t just warmed up frozen sandwiches of the past. Of course, with the lingering promise of Buc-ees coming to town, competition is sure to grow.

Coming soon: Buc-ee's off I-40 & Airport Road

The much-awaited grandaddy of all travel centers, Buc-ees, is on schedule to be opening in February 2025 after some delays. The 74,000-square-foot travel stop will bring 200 jobs to the area and is well known for its pay scale and benefits. Job postings are beginning to be posted for managerial positions starting at $125,000 for the merchandising manager salary.

The travel center will feature 108 fueling positions with cheap gas and 24 EV charging stations. Buc-ee's locations are well known for having clean restrooms and Texas barbecue along with kolaches, homemade fudge, Beaver nuggets, jerky and fresh pastries. The chain was founded in 1982 and operates 46 stores across Texas and the South such as Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Stan Beard of Buc-ees was quoted as saying, “Amarillo is the midpoint between Chicago and Los Angeles on the fabled Route 66. I can’t think of a better place to put a Buc-ee's.”

Cefco Kitchen, off Rockwell Road (east side of I-27)

Among other fuel stations, Cefco close to Lair Road features plenty of gas pumps with special discounts and packaged food and drinks but also has a grill called Cefco Kitchen that serves fresh hot meals.

One of their best features is the popular crunchy fried Chicken-on-a-Stick which is a fresh, juicy, fried piece of chicken threaded on a stick, like a corndog. The ample offering holds the equivalent of two chicken breasts. They also have Clucker meals that have the same tasty fried chicken with crispy tator tots. Soft tacos featuring a tender and moist pulled pork can be topped with cheese and guacamole. And, a new staple around town is the Crispito, a delicious flour tortilla with chicken and a lightly spicy cream sauce spread thinly in the center.

And if that’s not enough, a Sonic Drive-In is attached at the north side. To complement the food, there are several flavored teas and a line of soft drinks available.

The Conoco Station’s Cowboy Kitchen, off McCormick

A little further down the road, at the Cowboy Kitchen at Conoco Station off McCormick Road, has its own brand of South of the Border cowboy tacos and burritos, or made with your choice of pulled pork, steak or chicken. Tender, slow cooked meats loaded with your choice of guacamole or beans, cheese and onions are hard to beat. Not just travelers or commuters stop here to grab a bite.

According to Anna Rivers, it’s their homemade chili that distinguishes them from all the others. “It’s my own recipe and nobody knows it, not even the owner,” she said. Not only is the chili delicious, but you can add Fritos, cheese, onions, fresh pico or a choice of creamy toppings to the warm chili." Rivers said their Pork Belly sandwiches are also a specialty item, along with the Pulled Pork sandwich. Many people drive out there to take a meal home, just for the flavor.

The Station also has several flavored teas and of course, packaged sandwiches and food. But the chili, soft tacos and burritos are worth a stop.

Allsup’s on I-27 loop (east 4th Avenue)

If you drive out 4th Street or by-pass Canyon, and travel further south, there lies a new Allsups which is the equivalent of a Super Store. This Allsup’s, along with their sought-after burritos, has a grill that serves fresh hamburgers. There are also tiny tacos and great chicken, hot and ready.

A long line of drinks covers one wall of the large place. The station/store even has packaged meats for sale. They have also been known to have a concert or two next to the station where a large stage has been erected.

Mitch’s Texas Style BBQ at Toot n Totum’s downtown and Georgia & 34th

Of course, Toot & Totum had to get into the race. Mitch’s BBQ features tasty barbeque sandwiches and hearty breakfasts for hungry drivers. Meat is fresh and delicious and the restaurant is easy to get to and order.

Manager Sheron Vonmerta said they have added loaded queso, baked potatoes topped with your favorite BBQ, wings, fried spicy pickles, fried mushrooms, Mozzarella planks and pretzels. Banana pudding, Turtle Brownies and Meme’s Fried Pies are available for dessert. You can sip on a cold beer or one of their own flavored lemonades while you eat. Hearty breakfasts can be picked up or eaten on the spot. Mitch’s also takes online orders for quick pickup. The tender BBQ is also available at other Toot & Totum locations and there is even a food truck that serves the popular Texas favorite.

QuikTrip at I-40 & Eastern; Bell & I-27

The first QuikTrip (QT) Travel Center on I-40 & Eastern opened in late January. There are 20 gas pumps and five diesel bays for trucks. The center is the 257th location in Texas. The soon-to-open QT Station at I-27 & Bell Ave., and 5105 I-40 East, will have the QT Kitchen with fresh made-to-order food including breakfast specials such as breakfast scrambles, tacos, biscuits, croissants and grilled cheese sandwiches. Lunch and dinner items include submarine sandwiches, tacos, wraps, pizza and pretzels.

They will also have soft service ice cream cones and twisters along with coffee specials. More than 30 flavors of soda will be at the customer’s beck and call as well as frozen drinks. In addition, the QT shop offers Retro caps and tee shirts along with cute dog bandanas, bowls and leashes.

According to the QT website, their motor fuel is guaranteed not to harm your engine and even list a toll-free number for service.

Travel through data from space in new 3d instagram experiences.

A new project provides special 3D “experiences” on Instagram using data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and other telescopes through augmented reality (AR), allowing users to travel virtually through objects in space. These new experiences of astronomical objects – including the debris fields of exploded stars – are being released to help celebrate the 25 th anniversary of operations from Chandra, NASA’s flagship X-ray telescope.  

In recent years, Instagram experiences (previously referred to as filters) of NASA mission control, the International Space Station, and the Perseverance Rover on Mars have allowed participants to virtually explore what NASA does. This new set of Chandra Instagram filters joins this space-themed collection.

“We are excited to bring data from the universe down to earth in this way,” said Kimberly Arcand, visualization and emerging technology scientist at the Chandra X-ray Center. “By enabling people to access cosmic data on their phones and through AR, it brings Chandra’s amazing discoveries literally right to your fingertips.”

The new Instagram experiences are created from 3D models based on data collected by Chandra and other telescopes along with mathematical models. Traditionally, it has been very difficult to gather 3D data of objects in our galaxy due to their two-dimensional projection on the sky. New instruments and techniques, however, have helped allowed astronomers in recent years to construct more data-driven models of what these distant objects look like in three dimensions.

These advancements in astronomy have paralleled the explosion of opportunities in virtual, extended, and augmented reality. Such technologies provide virtual digital experiences, which now extend beyond Earth and into the cosmos. This new set of Chandra Instagram experiences was made possible by a collaboration including NASA, the Smithsonian Institution, and students and researchers at Brown University.

These Instagram experiences also include data sonifications of the celestial objects. Sonification is the process of translating data into sounds and notes so users can hear representations of the data, an accessibility project the Chandra team has led for the past four years.

“These Chandra Instagram experiences are another way to share these cosmic data with the public,” said Arcand. “We are hoping this helps reach new audiences, especially those who like to get their information through social media.”

The objects in the new Chandra Instagram experience collection include the Tycho supernova remnant, the Vela Pulsar, the Helix Nebula, the Cat’s Eye Nebula, and the Chandra spacecraft. The 3D models of the first three objects were done in conjunction with Sal Orlando, an astrophysicist at Italy’s National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) in Palmero. The Cat’s Eye Nebula was created with data from Ryan Clairmont, physics researcher and undergraduate at Stanford University. Arcand worked with Brown’s Tom Sgouros and his team, research assistant Alexander Dupuis and undergraduate Healey Koch, on the Chandra Instagram filters.

The experiences include text that explains what users are looking at. The effects are free and available on Instagram on mobile devices for at least six months, and some will remain viewable in perpetuity on the Smithsonian’s Voyager 3D website.

“There is a lot of rich and beautiful data associated with these models that Healey and I looked to bring in, which we did by creating the textures on the models as well as programming visual effects for displaying them in AR,” said Dupuis.

NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center manages the Chandra program. The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory’s Chandra X-ray Center controls science from Cambridge Massachusetts and flight operations from Burlington, Massachusetts. The Chandra X-ray Center is headquartered at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, which is part of the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian.

Buc-ee’s to open largest location yet next month in Texas

The 50th buc-ee’s is 75,000 square feet and replaces the brand’s first-ever travel center, which opened in luling in 2003..

Buc-ee’s will open its doors to its 50th location and its largest travel center in the country on June 10 in Luling, the town “where the legend began,” 21 years after it opened its first family travel center in the city in 2003.

The original Luling location will be replaced by the new 75,000-square-foot rest stop, an almost 40,000-square-foot increase. The original travel center was just over 36,000 square feet.

“In the past, [the Luling store] was one of the biggest locations of any travel center,” director of operations Josh Smith said. “Now that we’ve grown and expanded, we’re just wanting to bring that title back to Luling since that’s where it all started for us.”

The company’s travel centers are known for their size and wide range of products and merchandise. The Luling center will have at least 200 employees, 120 fueling positions and thousands of food and drink options, according to a statement from Buc-ee’s. The store will serve barbecue, fudge, Beaver Nuggets, jerky, pastries, kolaches and more.

Luling is in South Texas, nearly 60 miles east of San Antonio off of Interstate 10.

The Buc-ee’s convenience store chain was founded in Clute, Texas in 1982. Smith said the brand’s first stores were average convenience stores with 6 to 12 pumps. But in 2003, the company built its first “family travel center” in Luling, expanding on the original rest stops.

In 2019, Buc-ee’s began a multistate expansion and now has rest stops in more than ten states across the South, including 35 currently open in Texas alone.

“It’s extremely important for us because Texas is our roots,” Smith said. “Bringing it all back home is one of those things that’s extremely prideful.”

The Luling travel center is just 1,000 square feet larger than the three next largest Buc-ee’s centers. Sevierville, Tenn., Hillsboro, Texas and Johnstown, Colo. each have 74,000-square-foot Buc-ee’s locations but will be just barely surpassed by the store opening in Luling.

The chain’s 51st location will open a week after the Luling travel center opens its doors. Smith said the 53,000-square-foot store will be in Smiths Grove, Ken.

Judge upholds decision to stop construction at Chicopee truck stop

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - A Hampden Superior Court judge has upheld a city council decision that stopped construction of a controversial truck stop and travel center on Burnett Road in Chicopee.

The Chicopee City Council rejected applications from Pilot Travel Centers LLC. for a service station license and a fuel storage permit about a year and a half ago.

The vote ultimately stopped the Tennessee-based company’s plan to build a travel center in its tracks. The company originally planned to build the truck stop on Burnett Road next to the Massachusetts turnpike and interstate-291 intersection.

The travel center would have consisted of gas pumps, a restaurant and a place for truck drivers to shower. When we spoke to city councilors a few months back they told us one of their main concerns was the congestion on Burnett Road.

According to court documents obtained by Western Mass News, Pilot Travel Centers LLC., took this case to court in hopes that a judge would vacate the 2022 decision by the Chicopee City Council and order the council to issue the licenses; as well as award pilot travel centers and another business any other lost costs and fees.

However the court ultimately denied the motion finding that the city council had rational basis in voting against the license.

Western Mass News spoke with city councilor Mary Beth Pniak Costello she told us in a statement:

“The city did its job and the law department did their job. She’s glad after reviewing the facts, the judge ultimately upheld the city council’s ruling…”

Costello added that the Burnett Road project was a very controversial development and the city council was worried about the safety of those who lived in the area.

This longtime south Phoenix nursery is being replaced. Here's what's coming

One of the last remaining large pieces of land along Baseline Road in south Phoenix, long home to a wholesale tree nursery, is to be developed into houses, apartments and commercial buildings, including retail stores and restaurants.

The 104-acre stretch of land located at 19th Avenue and Baseline Road has three separate owners working together to develop one cohesive project, said Rick Jellies, senior vice president and director of entitlement for City to City Commercial. Jellies and his business partner, Kent Baker, senior vice president at City to City Commercial, are working with the landowners as consultants to oversee the zoning process and will serve as brokers for the site.

Commercial portion will include 3.5-acre park

According to plans submitted to Phoenix, the development is proposed to have about 35 acres of commercial development along Baseline Road, which is planned for “something a little different for the area,” Jellies said, with a focus on sit-down restaurants or neighborhood services.

The commercial portion is planned to surround a 3.5-acre park space, which will be open to the public but maintained by the project’s owners, Jellies said.

The proposal calls for 17 acres of apartments, which will be about 360 units, about 15 acres of townhomes, about 213 units, which could be for rent or for sale, and about 39 acres of single-family homes.

Jellies said he and Kent worked closely with the neighborhood to make sure the proposed project was something the neighbors found acceptable. Input from neighbors and compromises from the landowners have made the project something both sides can benefit from, he said.

Height limited after community discussion

The owner of the majority of the land is Baseline Trees, a wholesale tree grower that supplies trees and plants to developments throughout the Valley, Jellies said. The company’s owner wants to retire, but will remain a south Phoenix resident, and wanted to make sure the development was suitable for the area.

“This will be a big change for the community to go from alfalfa and a beautiful tree farm to development,” Jellies said, acknowledging that the neighborhood will have to adjust to new surroundings. “Being a good neighbor was more important than maximizing yield. He wants to see those people when he goes out and have them look at him with respect.”

The effort has paid off so far, he said.

In response to neighbor concerns, the multifamily piece will be capped at two stories, one story lower than originally proposed, and the portion of the site devoted to the apartments was selected based on neighborhood input. The apartments will be closer to the middle of the site, to create shorter massing on Baseline for the commercial uses, and separated from the single-family neighborhood to the south, which was decided based on community input.

Jellies credited the landowners, the neighbors and Phoenix City Councilwoman Kesha Hodge Washington for being willing to facilitate productive conversations.

Neighbor says process has been encouraging

“This has been a wonderful experience, which contrasts significantly with some of the other experiences I’ve seen,” JoAnne Jensen, a neighbor who lives directly south of the proposed development said of the process, which relied heavily on community input. “People were pretty realistic, we knew that as beautiful as this land has been, it would be developed at some point.”

Jensen said the owners’ commitment to capping the apartment development to two stories is “an amazing gift to the community,” which will affect the amount of money the development will generate.

People may still be resistant to change, Jensen said. But the neighbors closest to the development have felt encouraged by the process and in favor of the project.

“If the community had not been made to feel so welcome, it would have been a difficult process,” she said.

The South Mountain Village Planning Committee voted to recommend approval of the project in May. The committee serves as an advisory body to the City Council. Both the Phoenix Planning Commission and the Phoenix City Council will hear the proposal before the council votes on it, but Jellies said he is optimistic because of the positive response the project has received so far.

Jellies said there already is an anchor tenant planned for the commercial portion, but could not yet specify the business’ name, and the group has been in negotiation with a handful of commercial developers for different pieces of the project. The group will begin talking with housing developers soon.

If the development receives approval from the City Council, construction will likely start on the site in the second half of 2025, he said.
