Highlights of the South Coast in Iceland

Skógafoss, Seljalandsfoss and Gljúfrabúi Waterfalls

Skógafoss is one of Iceland’s most visually astounding waterfalls. This remarkable natural attraction has a drop of 60 meters (197 feet) and stretches 25 meters (82 feet) wide, making it one of the biggest in the country. Because of the amount of spray produced from the cascade, visitors can spot at least one rainbow any time the sun is out.

For the best view of   Skógafoss, take the steep staircase that leads to the observation deck. Nesting seabirds often line the path to the top.

tours south of iceland

Seljalandsfoss shares first place as one of the most majestic waterfalls in the country and is one of the most photographed attractions in all of Iceland. Part of the river   Seljalandsá, the 60-meter (200-foot) falls originate from beneath the  Eyjafjallajökull glacier. The narrow cascade of the falls descends from a tall cliff, once a former coastline. Visitors can walk the path that circles all the way around the cascade and peek beneath the curtain of the waterfall. The sea is also visible from the sight across the lowlands.

tours south of iceland

Less than a kilometer from Seljalandsfoss lies a hidden gem.   Gljúfrabúi   (or Canyon Dweller) is a stunning waterfall located at Hamragarðar. The lesser-known falls is the perfect spot for photographers and nature lovers looking for peace.

The 40-meter (131 foot) high Gljúfrabúi hides behind a giant, outward-facing cliff. Because of this sneaky “hiding spot,” this waterfall is often overlooked by the thousands of travelers visiting Seljalandsfoss.

Reykjadalur Hot Spring Valley

Just an hour’s drive from Reykjavík lives a hot spring oasis. Reykjadalur ,   the Valley of Steam, is a magnificent geothermal area filled with endless hot springs and a bubbling river.

tours south of iceland

In summer the surrounding green hills come alive with flora, especially lupins. Chemicals in the soil dye the earth pink, yellow, red and blue and provide a whimsical atmosphere.

Reaching the valley requires a 40-minute hike featuring lovely views along the way. The closest town is   Hveragerði. Travelers can find a variety of service stations, an information center, cafes and restaurants.

Dyrhólaey Rock Cliffs and Arches

Dyrhólaey Peninsula is a 120-meter seacliff known for its extraordinary panoramic views of Iceland’s South Coast. Famous for breathtaking vistas and staggering rock formations, this is the perfect spot to take in Iceland’s natural beauty. The main feature of the promenade is its giant rock arch formed by centuries of erosion. Dyrhólaey translates to   Door Hill Island, a direct reference to the famous archway.

tours south of iceland

In addition to landscape views, the peninsula is the perfect spot to watch wildlife. There are a multitude of bird species including the popular Atlantic Puffin.

At the top of Dyrhólaey you’ll notice an old white lighthouse. Built in 1919 and completed in 1927,   Dyrhólaeyjarviti   was the first lighthouse in the area. The interior has since been renovated and transformed into a charming luxury hotel.

Located on the southernmost part of the mainland, Dyrhólaey is a popular stop for sightseers traveling the Ring Road route.

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach is one of Iceland’s most iconic attractions. The volcanic black shoreline is surrounded by picturesque sea stacks, basalt columns and cliffs. In fact, National Geographic ranked Reynisfjara among the   Top 10 Non-Tropical Beaches on the planet .

tours south of iceland

The nearby cliffs and sea stacks are home to arctic seabirds, including the popular puffin, attractive to wildlife lovers.   Reynisfjall   is the name of the mountain that towers above the beach. Inside the mountain wall you’ll discover a naturally formed cave, perfect for a picnic shelter! Reynisfjara is approximately two and a half hours from Reykjavik by car. Many South Coast tours include this attraction on their itinerary.

Vík Village

The charming coastal village of   Vík   is the southernmost town on the   Icelandic mainland. The area is surrounded by a variety of scenic landscapes and popular points of interest. As the last stop on travelers’ Iceland South Coast trip, the village is still within reach of natural attractions and activities. The terrific paragliding and zipline spots in the region attract thrill-seekers the world over.

tours south of iceland

In addition to the nearby natural attractions, Vík is the area’s main service center. Though the village is only home to about 300 residents, it offers multiple restaurants, cafes, shops and gas stations. Tourists staying overnight in Vík might even have a better chance of seeing the   Northern Lights!

Eldhraun Lava Field

The impressive Eldhraun lava field (“Fire Lava“) is the largest of its type in the world. It was formed during the biggest eruption in history, which lasted from 1783 to 1784. Today the 565 square kilometers (351 square miles) field is one of South Iceland’s most magnificent attractions.

tours south of iceland

Thick green moss covers the vast area, with the   Ring Road   crossing over for spectacular views. Along the way, there are several rest stops where you can pull over and snap some photos. North of nearby   Lake Laufbalavatn   lies an intricate lava tube system featuring more than 200 caves. Tours offer the chance to explore these geological wonders.

Skaftafell in Vatnajökull National Park

Tucked away in Europe’s largest national park,   Vatnajökull is Skaftafell Nature Reserve . The reserve was once its own park but joined with Vatnajökull National Park in 2008. Located just off Ring Road, it has become one of the most popular sightseeing routes on the South Coast.

tours south of iceland

A hiker’s oasis, the region offers trails through diverse landscapes, including lush forests, towering trees and impressive mountain views. The   Skaftafell Visitor’s Center   has trail maps, guides and information about the region. Travelers who wish to extend their stay can choose between hotel accommodations or campsites.

SOLHEIMAJOKULL GLACIER

Solheimajokull  is a glacier between the Katla and Eyjafjallajokull volcanoes. It’s approximately 5 miles (8 kilometers) long and 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) wide and is part of the larger Myrdalsjokull Glacier, which lies just on top of the caldera of the Katla Volcano.

Solheimajokull is easy to access and surrounded by breathtaking, snow-capped mountains making it popular with locals and tourists. We recommend that you  hike to the top of the glacier . There you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the South Coast and outstanding photo opportunities.

Sólheimajökull Glacier in the South of Iceland

If you intend to explore Solheimajokull, we highly recommend that you book a guided tour . With a tour guide, you’ll be able to safely traverse across the top of the glacier, try out ice climbing, and explore the existing ice caves. Just like most of the glaciers in Iceland, Solheimajokull is rapidly melting away and experts have warned that it may no longer be accessible even a decade from now.

VATNAJOKULL GLACIER, ICE CAVE, AND NATIONAL PARK

Vatnajokull National Park is one of three national parks in Iceland. It contains the  Vatnajokull Glacier ,  Skaftafell Nature Reserve , and  Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon . Each of the components of the national park is an attraction in itself. Its unique landscape of it was created by river erosion, glacial movements, and volcanic eruptions.

explorers looking at glacier ice crevasses

Vatnajokull Glacier takes up the majority of the national park and is the largest glacier in Europe . It covers approximately 9% of Iceland and hides several volcanoes underneath. Scientists have declared that volcanic eruptions are long overdue. Nevertheless, they do monitor the area carefully and have determined that, for now, it’s still a safe place to hike.

According to the Guinness World Records, the Vatnajokull Glacier has the longest sight line in the world , allowing you to see for a whopping 340 miles (550 kilometers). If you haven’t put the Vatnajokull National Park and Glacier on your bucket list yet, then you should soon! Climate change is already affecting Iceland’s natural treasures , and melting icebergs are causing the land surface to rise as much as 1.4 inches annually. Vatnajokull offers hiking tours , a chance to explore ice caves, and the opportunity to cruise on one of the lagoons that wash its shore of it.

EYJAFJALLAJOKULL

Eyjafjallajokull is one of the very few stratovolcanoes in Iceland. A stratovolcano is described as a volcano whose caldera is hidden under a glacier. Usually, eruptions of this type of volcano are very dangerous, as the world witnessed firsthand with this one’s eruption in 2010.

tours south of iceland

The explosion disrupted European air travel for a couple of weeks, stranding hundreds of airplanes and passengers. Neighboring towns in Iceland were evacuated due to lava ash floods.  Thanks to its notoriety, Eyjafjallajokull Volcano is still one of the most visited volcanoes in Iceland, and is perfectly safe these days, hosting hundreds of tours to its peak and ice cave.

There are a few ways you can explore the volcano. The most popular way is the  Fimmvörðuháls Trail , a circular hike around the volcano. The trail takes around a day to hike and is considered to be fairly easy.

The second way to explore the volcano is to traverse the surrounding glacier. After the eruption, the glacier shrunk significantly and became less popular. However, it remains an astounding place of glorious natural beauty. The hike to the glacier is very difficult and should only be attempted with an experienced guide. You can also try  riding on a glacier with a snowmobile  on one of our tours.

VESTMANNAEYJAR

Vestmannaeyjar  is an archipelago of around 30 islands south of the mainland. It has around four thousand inhabitants and became world-famous after a volcanic eruption in 1974. During the eruption, in an attempt to tame the hot-like-hell lava, locals pumped seawater directly onto the lava. The waters helped to cool and redirect the flow, and to save the lives and homes of 5,300 people. As a result, the island is now a popular tourist attraction, with an extended harbor and a runway for planes.

tours south of iceland

Vestmannaeyjar is also widely visited for its natural beauty and the many adorable puffins who consider the island their home. Over ten millions of puffins come to Iceland to breed each year and most of them choose Vestmannaeyjar.

Svínafellsjökull – The Hollywood Glacier

Svínafellsjökull glacier is renowned for its unusual features and scenic views. The glacier is an outlet glacier of   Vatnajökull, the largest ice cap in Europe. It is one of Iceland’s most popular glacier hiking sites due to its raw beauty and formations.

tours south of iceland

Not just beloved by hikers and photographers, it has also become a popular Hollywood shooting location. Visitors may recognize the rugged landscape from   Star Wars, Batman and Game of Thrones.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon – Diamond Beach

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is an iconic Iceland attraction. Glittering ice floes floating on the water like giant diamonds. Glacier lagoons are lakes filled with the meltwater from nearby glaciers. At 248 meters (814 feet) deep, Jökulsárlón is the deepest lake in Iceland.

tours south of iceland

Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier   feeds the lagoon and is an outlet of   Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest ice cap. Volcanic activity in the area pushed up the glacial sediments under Breiðamerkurjökull, creating a shoreline. Nicknamed   “Diamond Beach,”   the black sand strip is covered in giant icebergs that have washed ashore.

The icebergs of Jökulsárlón are notable not just for their size but also for their color. While many are solid white, most also glow electric blue with black ash streaks from volcanic eruptions.

The famed lagoon has appeared onscreen in the James Bond films   A View to Kill   in 1985 and   Die Another Day   in 2002,   Lara Croft: Tomb Raider   in 2001, and 2005’s   Batman Begins.

Sólheimasandur DC3 Plane Wreck

Banked on the shore of   Sólheimasandur Beach sits the shell of an age-old plane. The   DC Plane Wreck   is a popular attraction in South Iceland. Visitors come to explore and photograph the giant former plane surrounded by wild landscapes.

tours south of iceland

The former US Navy aircraft has lain on the beach since 1973. Multiple theories have circulated on what caused the forced landing, but fortunately, no one was hurt. The easiest way to reach the plane is on a horse riding, ATV or walking tour. Discover a piece of aviation history!

SECRET LAGOON

The Secret Lagoon  in Iceland is a natural hot spring. Located in a geothermally active area close to the small town of Fludir, it’s the oldest public pool in Iceland.

The lagoon is a part of the  Golden Circle route  and is widely visited by both tourists and locals alike. While similar to the Blue Lagoon, it’s cheaper and more rural, situated in the middle of a moss-covered lava field.

tours south of iceland

The Secret Lagoon is accessible all year long and the temperature of the water is constant at 100° Fahrenheit (38-40° Celsius). Apart from perfectly warm water, the lagoon has other attractions to offer nearby. Geothermal hot spots and a small geyser surprising visitors every 4 minutes are there to entertain. The pool is surrounded by wooden pathways, which together with the steam rising from the pool create a mystical, picture-worthy scene.

The Secret Lagoon in Iceland is as enjoyable in the winter as it is in the summer. It’s a sublime experience to bathe in hot, geothermal water in the crisp winter air. If you’re really lucky, then the flickering colors of the Northern Lights may dance across the night sky during your visit – an unforgettable experience that you’ll treasure forever.

FIMMVORDUHALS TREK

Fimmvorduhals  is a trail between the  Eyjafjallajökull  and  Mýrdalsjökull glaciers . It stretches out through the diverse terrain for around 15 miles (25 kilometers), connecting Skogar with the Thorsmork Valley and can only be accessed during summer. The weather on the trail is very unpredictable and anything from summer rain to severe hails is possible. The trail is devoured by local hikers and is a site of pilgrimage for adventure seekers from around the world.

tours south of iceland

While it is possible to complete the trail in a day, we recommend taking your time and really soaking in the breathtaking scenery. There are two mountain huts on the way to the Thorsmork Valley , where you can stay overnight if you want to spend more than one day in the area. While the trail is only 15 miles (25 kilometers), it’s not recommended for absolute beginners. To get the most out of it you should be in relatively good physical condition.

HEKLA VOLCANO

Hekla  is the most active volcano in Iceland and has erupted over 20 times since 874 c.e., with another eruption expected soon. Nonetheless, scientists suggest that the volcano is perfectly safe to explore for now. During the Middle Ages, Icelanders called it the Gateway to Hell, though it’s now often referred to as the Queen of Iceland. The last eruption took place from February 26 to March 8, 2000.

The volcano looks a lot like an overturned boat, with active craters stretching over both sides. At one time, it was covered by birch and willow trees. Due to human interference and volcanic eruptions, the soil around the volcano has transformed into a vast, moss-covered lava field.

tours south of iceland

Hiking  is very popular in the area around the volcano. While you’re able to hike to the summit of the volcano on your own, it’s strongly recommended that you go in the company of an experienced mountaineering guide. Hekla Volcano is rather unpredictable, so the information that our qualified guides are able to provide will make the adventure safe and insightful.

FJAÐRÁRGLJÚFUR

In the southeast of Iceland,  Fjadrargljufur Canyon stretches out for about 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) and 330 feet (100 meters) into the ground. At the bottom, the glacier-fed Fjadra River carves out its rugged, steep walls. Fjadrargljufur Canyon is located close to the Ring Road and yet is largely unknown. To get to it, you need to drive east towards Hofn and exit the road near Kirkjubæjarklaustur Village. Then take the mountain road no. F206 and ride for a few more minutes until you reach the parking area.

tours south of iceland

There are two ways you can hike the canyon: you can take a path at the top that goes along the rim of the ravine, or if you prefer a more extreme hike, walk down to the bottom of the canyon. Regardless of the path you choose, you’ll be rewarded with enchanting views of moss-covered rough stone and a rapidly flowing river. Please note hiking along the bottom of the canyon might require you to wade the river at some points. Also, if you hike from east to west, expect to be surprised by the playful waterfall, cascading down the gorge.

Must-Do: Most Popular Activities

Glacier hiking sólheimajökull and mýrdalsjökull glacier.

tours south of iceland

Thrill-seekers who want to try ice climbing have their choice of many different ice walls. Tour guides provide all necessary equipment for safe and fun glacier adventures.

Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier of the giant   Mýrdalsjökull ice cap , the fourth largest ice cap in Iceland. The mighty glacier is home to the infamous   Katla Volcano.

Explore the hidden treasures beneath the glacier. Deep beneath the ice caps lie the glittering natural ice caves of Iceland. During this unmissable experience, learn the secrets of the caves on an   ice caving tour . Your guide will share fascinating facts about the history and formation of the caves.

tours south of iceland

Step inside and travel back in time through ancient ice. Each cave is unique and changes every year, so you will never see the same one twice. For safety reasons, these tours are only offered during the winter months. This is the perfect seasonal activity that everyone should add to their bucket list.

Horseback Riding

Explore the magical South Coast landscapes on horseback . The   Icelandic horse   was first brought to the country during the   Viking age. Because of their popularity, laws were put in place to prevent the breed from being mixed with other horses, which means they have remained the same for almost 1000 years!

tours south of iceland

The most distinctive feature of this breed is their unique gait, called the “tolt.” Channel your inner Viking as you explore the beautiful sights of this region.

Trekking Landmannalaugar and Thorsmork

Landmannalaugar and Thorsmork are popular hiking regions in the southern part of the Icelandic Highlands. About 55 km (34 mi) apart, these areas have vastly different landscapes. Trekking tours offer the opportunity to trek between the two valleys.

tours south of iceland

Landmannalaugar is a multicolored, geothermal valley enclosed by rhyolite mountains. During the summer it is one of Iceland’s most popular hiking spots. Landmannalaugar translates to “People’s Pools” as it is filled with natural geothermal baths where hikers can take a dip.

In the center of the area, an inky lava field stretches out over several kilometers. The surrounding mountains feature hues of green, yellow, purple, red, blue, white and black, providing surreal visuals.

Thorsmork is a completely different world from the bare, smoky valley of Landmannalaugar. This lush green valley is rich with birch forests, various mosses and Arctic flowers. The flora and fauna of the area offer the perfect habitat for multiple bird species and Arctic foxes.

Hvannadalshnúkur Summit

Hvannadalshnúkur, or Hvannadalshnjúkur, is the tallest mountain in Iceland. Towering 2,109.6 meters (6952 feet) tall, it is the highest peak of   Öræfajökull volcanic glacier   inside Vatnajökull National Park. The pyramid-shaped peak is best seen from the southern towns of Höfn and Vík on the Ring Road.

tours south of iceland

Those brave enough to summit this beast should be warned that it requires a good fitness level. While you don’t need to be an expert, you should only hike the mountain in the company of an experienced mountain guide. The route involves icy grounds, steep inclines and crevasses. Adventurers who do embark on this adventure will be rewarded with outstanding views.

Golden Circle

The   Golden Circle   is the best-known tour route in Iceland. The 300-kilometer (186 miles) tour guides you to three popular natural attractions: Geysir Geothermal Area, Gullfoss Waterfall and Þingvellir National Park. Get a taste of the country’s fascinating landscapes.

tours south of iceland

The Geysir Geothermal Area   is a hot spring oasis in the Haukadalur Valley. It features the famous Great Geysir, the active Strokkur and smaller Smiður and Litlí-Strokkur geysers. The area is decorated with fumaroles, mud pits and hot springs.

A ten-minute drive from Geysir and the furthest point on the Golden Circle is   Gullfoss , the “Golden Waterfall.” One of the most marvelous and powerful waterfalls in Iceland, it cascades 32 meters (105 feet) down. This two-tiered waterfall is truly a sight to behold.

tours south of iceland

The biggest attraction on the Golden Circle is   Þingvellir National Park . The park was named a   UNESCO World Heritage Site   due to its geological and historical importance. It is the birthplace of the Icelandic parliament, founded in 930 CE, the world’s longest ongoing parliament. The park marks the separation between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Visitors can stand between two continents at once!

South Coast Self-Drive Tours

Driving through the south of Iceland is easy. Self-drives on Iceland’s South Coast follow the Ring Road, the primary road in the region. Most of the popular attractions are scattered along the road and can be reached on foot. During this unforgettable experience, you’ll witness incredible landscapes, waterfalls and glaciers. No wonder it’s one of the most popular road trips in the world!

tours south of iceland

There are many perks to   self-drive tours , such as the freedom to travel at your own pace, spontaneous pit stops and good value. There are numerous gas stations and villages throughout the Ring Road route, so solo travel in this area is safe and easy. However, there are a few things to keep in mind before you hit the road.

Not all attractions in South Iceland are easy to access and are instead located inland.   Thórsmörk   and   Landmannalaugar   are the two most difficult areas in South Iceland to reach. While most attractions can be reached by normal car, these sites require an experienced driver and a   4X4   vehicle with big tires. It is highly recommended that drivers purchase full insurance.

tours south of iceland

Icelandic roads can be difficult to navigate, with narrow passes, curves and hills. Driving the South of Coast Iceland in winter can be hazardous. Extreme weather conditions turn already tricky roads into a safety hazard, so checking the forecast is a must.

Roads in the highlands are challenging even in summer. In some cases, you will drive on unpaved roads and cross unbridged rivers. River crossings are not insured.

Highland roads are only open to the public during summer (mid-September to mid-June). Beyond that, they are only accessible by   Superjeeps. Only drivers with specialized driver's licenses may operate Superjeeps.

If you want to enjoy the scenic attractions of the highlands in the winter join a Thórsmörk or   Landmannalaugar tour .

The total drive time from Reykjavik to Vik, without stopping, is   2h 30 minutes. Day tours along the South Coast, which take you to popular points of interest, range from about   10-12 hours. Travelers who wish to spend their time at each attraction may opt for a self-drive tour and spend the night in Vik.

What’s the best time to visit the South Coast of Iceland?

Every season has something special to offer. Summer is the high season for tourism in Iceland. Visitors can enjoy activities such as kayaking, hiking and horseback riding. For self-drivers, the roads are safer to navigate in summer.

Winter is just as special. The popular ice caving tours are only offered during this season and are an unmissable activity. As a bonus, travelers spending the night in Vik have the chance to spot the famous   Northern Lights.

Is it dangerous to travel the South Coast of Iceland by yourself?

No. Self-drive tours are a lovely way to explore all the region has to offer at your own pace. The Ring Road is easy to navigate when the weather is nice. Iceland’s South Coast in winter, however, is trickier to maneuver and traveling with a group or   private tour   is recommended.

Where are the best places to eat along the South Coast of Iceland?

You’ll have no problem finding a place to grab a bite on your Iceland South Coast drive. The region offers a range of restaurants, bistros and cafes ranging from classy to casual. Check out our full   food guide   on   Where to Eat on the South Coast   for a list of recommendations.

How far is the south coast from Reykjavík?

Iceland's south coast stretches from the Reykjanes peninsula in the west all the way to East Iceland . At just a 1–1.5 hour drive away, the western end of the south coast is closest to Reykjavík. From the Icelandic capital, you can follow the Ring Road (Route 1) along the coastline.

Being so close to the capital makes it the ideal region to explore on a multi-day tour from Reykjavík . You can discover top attractions on the south coast by day before returning to your home base in the city for the evening.

How long does it take to travel the south coast of Iceland?

You can drive the south coast in a day without stopping, but that’s no way to experience Iceland!

To truly soak up everything the south coast has to offer, we recommend at least 2 days for your trip. For instance, you could spend an entire day just exploring Vatnajökull, Iceland’s largest national park and home to Europe’s largest glacier.

If you want to take your time and see all the attractions, you can easily spend 5 days or more traveling this scenic stretch of Iceland.

What people love about South Iceland Tours

The tour was great and the guide, Sindre, was exeptional. He told us many historic, geological and scientific stuff, and also Icelandic legends during the driving time, making the driving time more enjoyable. He is a very patient and funny guy, who couldn’t wait for the perfect time to make a joke for us!!The first day was a little bit rushed, especially compared to the third one, but we were able to see all the highlights. The glacier hike and ice cave experience was amazing, thanks to Jergus, who changed the plan for our group in order to have more time and enjoy it as much as possible! I couldn’t have asked for better guides for these 3 days. Thank you so much
The walk was excellent. Louis the tour guide was exceptional. His knowledge about the area and geology was brilliant. I will always remember Louis!!!

"Overall a nice tour. Arctic Adventures 3-day tour was very good with an outstanding guide. Not sure why you call this a 5-day tour, when it is just a 3.5 day tour. The last day Magical Auroras Tour was cancelled. Will you be refunding the amount for this tour?

"I had a really amazing time with my group in Iceland! I had a lot of worries prior to the trip because it was my first time out of North America, on my first solo trip, and I don't drink so I thought nobody was going to talk to me. It was quite the contrary, there will always be people who will talk to you & want to be around you. I found a great group of friends, we went on so many great adventures, learned a lot about Iceland, ate SUCH GOOD FOOD, and saw the best sights. Demi was a stellar trip manager, she made me feel so comfortable, she knows her stuff, and she made me laugh so many times during the trip. I'm so glad I went on this trip, and if you're on the fence, I'd say book it now, you won't regret it!

Difficulty Ratings

Easy, moderate, challenging … What does this really mean? Below you can read the definitions we use for our ratings. We hope this will help you get an idea of the trip difficulty to make sure you choose a trip that suits you best.

Easy Suitable for most people in fair condition. You have to be able to walk on uneven surfaces and hike for at least 2 – 3 hours at a slow pace, with breaks. Trails are generally of good quality and glaciers travel at a relatively low angle.

Moderate Suitable for those in good condition who are able to walk for about 4 hours at a low or moderate pace. Trails are generally of good quality and glaciers travel at a relatively low angle.

Challenging For someone in good hiking condition and with experience of hiking. Trails are generally in fair conditions but some parts of the tour might be off track. Glacier/snow travel can be on uneven ground with challenging sections. Increased distance. We recommend guests have the ability to cover 12 km a day on rugged trails and snow.

Demanding Only a few of our trips are defined as Demanding. Hence most of our tours are rated Easy, moderate, or challenging.

Demanding tours are for someone in very good hiking and physical condition. Trails are generally in fair conditions but large sections of the tour might be off track. Glacier/snow travel on uneven ground with some challenging sections. Increased distance. We recommend guests have the ability to cover 20 km a day on uneven trails and snow. A significant increase in elevation and some technical difficulty should be expected.

Equipment list

Equipment needed can vary greatly from season to season as well as the length of your tour. The following list can be used as a guideline for our trekking, hiking, and longer Snowmobile tours in Iceland.

Try to pack as lightly as possible and take only essentials. Excess baggage can be a burden to you and to our support crew. Keep in mind that there are limits on how much your duffel bag can weigh because the weight restrictions on international and domestic flights are usually around 20 kg.

Luggage for Multiday tours and longer journeys with assistance vehicle An extra bag clearly marked with your name can be kept at your Reykjavik accommodation. Large duffel bag (60/80 liters) sturdy and water-resistant, not exceeding 15 kg Daypack (30 to 50 liters)

Clothing You will need to bring comfortable and adequate clothing to protect you from the cold and wet weather. Wool, synthetics, and wool/synthetic blends are good. We discourage the use of cotton, as this does not insulate against cold or wet conditions. When camping, tents are provided. You will be responsible for bringing your mattress and sleeping bag.

When layering, the innermost layer should be long underwear. The middle layer can be a synthetic turtleneck or wool shirt, and pants. The outermost layer should be a synthetic jacket, and/or a good quality Gore-Tex wind/rain parka and over-pants.

For quantities for each item listed, use your own judgment, based on the expected weather conditions and overall packing/weight restrictions for your luggage.

  • Regular underwear. Synthetics are easier to wash and dry
  • Synthetic or wool thermal underwear
  • Long-sleeved, synthetic, or wool shirt

Glacier hike with Alberto Marini

"We had a private guided glacier walk for 3 active senior friends with Alberto Marini who is an Italian-born mountain/rock climber. Though cautious by nature, I felt completely comfortable with Alberto who apparently trained many of the other guides we encountered. He was knowledgeable about glaciers and the natural history of Iceland-verified by my geologist husband. Definitely worth doing especially if with Alberto."

Snowmobiling gone wild on a glacier

"We had a private tour with 2 couples to do snowmobiling on a glacier. Magnus was a very skilled ATV driver taking us on an adventurous 1hour drive to get to the glacier to meet snowmobiles. We enjoyed the vantage point even on a cloudy windy day to ride around to see the surrounding volcanoes. Quite a fun 3 hour tour."

Private Tour to Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach

" We took a private tour from Hotel Ranga out to Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach. We rented a car but decided it was too far to drive on our own there and back in one day so we booked a tour with Southcoast.

Our driver, Stefan, was fantastic! It was a 10-hour journey (including a stop for lunch) so it was nice to have a guide that was a great conversationalist and very knowledgeable about Iceland. He answered all of our questions about Iceland and stopped at a few places we never would have found on our own.

We had a gorgeous day and the pictures we got on Diamond Beach were out of this world. Would highly recommend this company and this guide, especially if you're interested in a private tour. "

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach - A Volcanic Wonder

Prepare to be amazed by the world-famous Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach. The black sand beach is a very popular stop when visiting the south coast of Iceland. Take a memorable stroll along the volcanic black sand, surrounded by towering basalt formations and powerful Atlantic waves crashing upon the shores. Keep an eye out for the craggy rock formations just offshore, said to be petrified trolls!

Formation of the Black Sand Beach

The formation of Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach is an extraordinary natural phenomenon that dates back to ancient volcanic activity. The beach's jet-black sand is a result of the erosion of basaltic lava, which was formed when molten lava cooled rapidly upon contact with the ocean. Over time, this volcanic material was broken down into fine grains, creating the unique black sand that covers the beach.

The beach's iconic basalt columns are another fascinating feature that adds to its allure. These hexagonal pillars were formed through the slow cooling and contraction of lava flows, resulting in the characteristic geometric shapes. The mesmerizing sight of these towering columns, coupled with the contrast of the black sand, creates a surreal and otherworldly atmosphere.

Reynisfjara's formation is a testament to the power and beauty of nature, showcasing the intricate processes that have shaped the Earth over millions of years. It serves as a reminder of Iceland's volcanic origins and the constant evolution of our planet.

Unique features of Reynisfjara

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach is renowned for its unique features fromed from volcanic eruptions, which set it apart from other beaches around the world. One of the most striking aspects is the presence of Reynisdrangar, the basalt sea stacks that rise dramatically from the sea. These towering formations, standing up to 66 meters tall, create a captivating visual spectacle and provide a stunning backdrop for photographers and nature enthusiasts alike. The features are all the result of old volcanic eruptions.

Another notable feature of Reynisfjara is the impressive basalt cave known as Hálsanefshellir. Located near the beach, this cave offers a glimpse into the ancient geological history of the area. As you explore its dark chambers, you'll be surrounded by the echoes of crashing waves and the play of light filtering through the narrow openings, creating an ethereal experience.

The picturesque cliffs that frame Reynisfjara Beach are yet another unique aspect of this volcanic eruptions wonder. Carved by the relentless force of the Atlantic Ocean, these cliffs exhibit fascinating rock formations and intricate patterns, showcasing the ever-changing nature of the coastal landscape.

Safety precautions for visiting Reynisfjara

While Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach is undeniably beautiful, it's important to be aware of the potential dangers that come with visiting this natural wonder. The powerful waves and unpredictable currents of the Atlantic Ocean can pose a significant risk to unsuspecting visitors. It is crucial to exercise caution and adhere to the following safety precautions:

Stay away from the water's edge : The waves at Reynisfjara can be deceptively powerful and can easily sweep you off your feet. It's essential to keep a safe distance from the water's edge and never turn your back on the ocean.

Beware of sneaker waves : Sneaker waves, also known as rogue waves, can unexpectedly surge ashore with tremendous force. Always be vigilant and watch out for any signs of unusual wave patterns or sudden changes in the water's behavior.

Respect the warning signs : The beach is equipped with warning signs that indicate the potential dangers. Take these signs seriously and follow any instructions or recommendations provided.

Keep an eye on children : Children should be closely supervised at all times when visiting Reynisfjara. The strong currents and steep cliffs can pose a significant risk to their safety.

By being cautious and respectful of the ocean's power, you can enjoy the beauty of Reynisfjara while ensuring your safety and the safety of those around you. Don´t be afraid to ask your tour guide if you have questions.

Wildlife at Reynisfjara

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach is not only a haven for geology enthusiasts but also boasts a diverse range of wildlife. The rocky cliffs provide nesting grounds for various seabird species, including puffins, fulmars, and guillemots. These graceful birds can be observed soaring above the cliffs or diving into the ocean in search of food.

The beach itself is home to a variety of marine life, with seals occasionally spotted basking on the rocks or swimming close to the shore. If you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of whales or dolphins in the distance as they navigate the deep waters of the Atlantic.

For nature lovers, Reynisfjara offers a unique opportunity to witness the interconnectedness of land and sea and to appreciate the delicate balance of ecosystems thriving in this volcanic environment.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon - A Glacial Paradise

One of the most iconic attractions on the South Coast is the famous Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Witness the meeting of the glacier Breiðamerkurjökull and the ocean as giant pieces of ice calve from the glacier and float serenely out to sea. Nearby, at Diamond Beach, you'll find glittering fragments of icebergs carved into stunning shapes by the wind and waves.

Formation and geographical features of Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is a result of the retreat of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. As the glacier melts, large blocks of ice break off and float in the lagoon, creating a stunning display of icebergs. The glacial waters, sourced from the Vatnajökull ice cap, are incredibly clear and take on a mesmerizing blue hue. The lagoon is surrounded by black sand beaches, contrasting the pristine icebergs and creating a unique and picturesque landscape.

The lagoon is constantly changing due to the movement of the icebergs. As they float towards the mouth of the lagoon, they eventually make their way to the Atlantic Ocean, creating a dynamic and ever-evolving environment. The size and shape of the icebergs vary greatly, with some towering several meters above the water, while others are smaller and more delicate.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is not only visually stunning but also serves as an important research site for scientists studying glacial retreat and the effects of climate change. As the glaciers continue to melt, the lagoon is expected to grow in size, making it an even more significant natural phenomenon.

Unique wildlife and flora at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is not only a glacial paradise for humans but also a haven for various wildlife species. One of the most iconic inhabitants of the lagoon is the Atlantic seal. These curious creatures can often be seen basking on the floating ice or swimming gracefully in the glacial waters. Visitors can witness these majestic animals up close during boat tours of the lagoon, providing a truly unforgettable experience.

In addition to seals, Jökulsárlón is a popular spot for birdwatching enthusiasts. The lagoon attracts a wide variety of bird species, including Arctic terns, great skuas, and puffins. The sight of these birds soaring above the icebergs is a true spectacle and adds to the overall enchantment of the lagoon.

The flora surrounding Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is sparse but resilient. The harsh conditions of the glacier tongue environment have given rise to unique plant species that have adapted to the extreme cold and limited nutrients. Mosses, lichens, and small flowering plants can be found scattered across the black sand beaches, adding a touch of color to the stark landscape.

Activities and attractions at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon in Southern Iceland

There are numerous activities and attractions that allow visitors to fully immerse themselves in the beauty of Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. One of the most popular options is a boat tour of the lagoon. Hop aboard a zodiac or amphibian boat and navigate through the icebergs, getting up close and personal with these natural wonders. The knowledgeable guides provide insights into the formation of the lagoon and its inhabitants, making the experience both educational and awe-inspiring.

For those seeking a more tranquil experience, simply standing at the edge of the lagoon and taking in the breathtaking scenery is a must. The stillness of the water, the towering icebergs, and the distant sound of cracking ice create a sense of serenity that is hard to find elsewhere. Be sure to bring your camera and capture the beauty of Jökulsárlón in all its glory.

If you're feeling adventurous, consider taking a guided glacier hike on the nearby Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. Strap on crampons and explore the icy terrain, marveling at crevasses, ice caves, and ice formations. This thrilling experience offers a unique perspective on the glacial environment and is sure to leave you with lasting memories.

Dress warmly: The weather near the lagoon can be unpredictable, with strong winds and low temperatures. Layer your clothing and bring a waterproof jacket to protect yourself from the elements.

Book boat tours in advance: Boat tours at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon are popular and can fill up quickly, especially during peak tourist season. To secure your spot, it's advisable to book your tour in advance.

The Formation of Diamond Beach

Diamond Beach owes its existence to the nearby Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, which is a part of the larger Vatnajökull glacier. As the glacier slowly advances, chunks of ice break off and float downstream towards the Atlantic Ocean. These icebergs then get washed ashore, adorning the volcanic black sand beach with their presence.

The black sand is a result of volcanic activity in the area, creating a stark contrast against the translucent icebergs. The constant interaction between the icebergs and the waves shapes them into various forms and sizes, making each visit to Diamond Beach a unique experience.

Unique Features of Diamond Beach

What sets Diamond Beach apart is the ethereal beauty of the icebergs against the dark sand. The icebergs come in different shades of white and blue, and their smooth surfaces reflect the sunlight, creating a dazzling display of colors. As the waves crash onto the beach, they gently polish the ice formations, making them glisten like radiant diamonds.

No two icebergs are the same, and each one has its own unique shape and texture. Some icebergs are small and delicate, while others are massive and imposing. Visitors can spend hours exploring the beach, marveling at the intricate patterns and details of the ice formations.

Wildlife at Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon

Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, located just a short walk from Diamond Beach, is not only home to stunning icebergs but also a rich variety of wildlife. The lagoon serves as a sanctuary for various bird species, including Arctic terns, puffins, and great skuas. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the opportunity to observe these fascinating creatures up close.

If you're lucky, you might even spot seals swimming among the icebergs. The lagoon provides an ideal habitat for seals, and they can often be seen basking on the ice or diving into the cold waters. Witnessing these playful creatures in their natural environment is a truly magical experience.

Additionally, the summer months offer the chance to witness the Midnight Sun, where the sun remains visible throughout the night.

During the winter months, from October to April, the region transforms into a winter wonderland. However, the weather can be harsh, with temperatures dropping below freezing and limited daylight hours. Despite the challenging conditions, the icy landscape takes on a whole new level of beauty, and the Northern Lights may even make an appearance.

Seljalandsfoss: Explore the Beautiful Walk-Behind Waterfall

South Coast Iceland, Seljalandsfoss waterfall - south Iceland tour guide

The very first destination for the day will be Seljalandsfoss waterfall that is sure to leave you stunned with the exemplary lush green surroundings. The water is sure to drizzle all over, so don’t forget to carry your raincoat . This beautiful waterfall is sure to leave you speechless. It is one of the most scenic waterfalls in Iceland. The reason why it is so popular is that you will have the opportunity to walk behind it. Yes! You can walk all around the waterfall, catching magnificent views from behind the waterfall over the south coast of Iceland. The path is clearly visible and has sufficient space for the visitors to ensure you don’t miss the beautiful views with the power of water up and close. Hike behind the waterfall and be prepared to get drenched in the water too. It will be an experience you will never forget!

Skógafoss Waterfall

Rainbow at Skógafoss Waterfall - Iceland Must See

Moving towards the next destination, yet another beautiful waterfall awaits you. It is Skógafoss Waterfall with an approximate drop of 62 meters. It looks majestically magical and is sure to make you astounded by its beauty. This waterfall is wider and more powerful than Seljalandsfoss with an approximate 25 meters width. Indeed, one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland. Skógafoss Waterfall allows you to hike up to the top where you will find an observation platform to capture the picturesque waterfall. You can also walk on the ground and get very close to the waterfall. Bring your raincoat if you want to get close to the waterfall because you will most definitely get wet. But there is something so unique about experiencing the power of nature so deeply.

Vatnajökull is the largest glaciers in Iceland and the largest glacier in Europe. One of its outlet glaciers will be the next and last destination of the day. We will visit Skaftafell Nature Reserve – one of the most beautiful pars of Iceland – where you will go hiking on a glacier. This will only add more adventure to your day and make it even more memorable. In Skaftafell Nature Reserve you will find numerous of hiking paths but the views over the glacier are simply magnificent. The spectacular views, rugged and wild landscapes will add to the adventure. Fret not, complete guidance about glacier hike and how to commence that will be provided. You will also be equipped with ice axes, harnesses, helmets, and crampons to keep the safety quotient high. We will start Day-2 by visiting one of the most stunning part of Iceland, Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon . Jokulsarlon is located in Vatnajökull National Park and is by many considered to be the most beautiful place in Iceland. This 200m deep glacier lagoon looks spectacular with the floating and flipping icebergs all around. The ice bergs in the glacier lagoon drop off from Breiðamerkurjokull glacier, which is an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier. On Day 1 you will be hiking on another outlet glacier of Vatnajokull, so when visiting this area and participating in those activities you will get a good idea on how big Vatnajokull really is. The whole lagoon is filled with huge chunks of icebergs that are a treat to the eyes. Walk around and experience the serene and calm environment closely. We can promise you that you will want to visit this place again in the future.

man standing and watching the sunset at Diamond Beach in south Iceland

After taking in the views at Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon you will be heading just a couple of meters away to the Diamond Beach . Just after witnessing the massive chunks of icebergs in the glacial lagoon, now is the time to experience those icebergs closely. Yes, the icebergs from the stunning Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon are thrown to the Diamond Beach by the massive waves and tides. Diamond Beach is known for the human-sized and naturally polished icebergs, that are sculpted by mother nature. These icebergs from the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon crashes at the Beach to form a visually stunning sight. These icebergs look like diamonds and create a beautiful contrast against the black sand, under the sun. You will find massive icebergs to smaller ice blocks in varied shapes and sizes in the shades of white and blue

20 Best Things To Do In South Iceland You Shouldn’t Miss

Seljalandsfoss.

The 200-foot Seljalandsfoss waterfall is right off Route 1 (Ring Road) on the South Coast of Iceland. There is no hiking required to see this waterfall. It is just a short walk from the parking lot.

Though Iceland is graced with an endless display of stunning waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss’ unique quality is it is possible to walk behind the waterfall.

A path leads from the parking lot to the front of the waterfall and then loops around the back so you get a view of the waterfall from every angle.

We suggest wearing rain gear, as you’ll likely get a little wet, particularly on a windy day.

Seljalandsfoss Tips

  • Walk Behind the Waterfall : Experience the unique opportunity to walk behind the falls. Wear a waterproof jacket as you will get wet.
  • Best Viewing Times : Go either early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid crowds and enjoy a more peaceful experience.
  • Nearby Hidden Gem : Check out Gljúfrabúi, a nearby lesser-known waterfall within walking distance, tucked away in a small canyon.
  • Prepare for Wet Conditions : The area around the waterfall can be slippery, so wear sturdy, waterproof footwear for safety.

Looking down at sunset over Seljalandsfoss waterfall in South Iceland.

Gljufabui is often overlooked as it is slightly hidden and is smaller than its towering neighbor, Seljalandsfoss. But since Gljufrabui is within walking distance of Seljalandsfoss, you do not want to miss out on this South Coast hidden gem.

After Seljalandsfoss, head to the right (if you’re facing the parking lot), and walk to the campgrounds until you see a sign for the waterfall and a cavern with a river. To get to the waterfall, you’ll have to walk through the river, so be prepared with waterproof boots or a change of shoes.

Once inside, you’ll be greeted with a beautiful waterfall that looks as if it’s pouring through a skylight in nature’s ceiling. There’s a giant boulder in the middle of the cavern, which is easy to climb and perfect for taking pictures.

Gljufrabui Tips

  • Hidden Gem : Gljúfrabúi is less known and often less crowded than nearby Seljalandsfoss, offering a more secluded experience.
  • Access Through a Canyon : To fully view the waterfall, you’ll need to walk through a narrow canyon. Waterproof shoes are essential.
  • Prepare to Get Wet : The enclosed nature of the waterfall means more spray, so wearing waterproof clothing is recommended
  • Photography Inside the Canyon : For photographers, capturing the falls inside the canyon can be challenging but rewarding. Protect your camera from water spray.

A person standing at base of Gljufrabui waterfall in South Iceland.

Located in Southern Iceland a little further down the coast, Skogafoss is just a 25-minute drive from Seljalandsfoss and Gljufrabrui. You will quickly see why this is one of the best things to do in south Iceland!

The Skoga River flows along a wide, pebbled path leading right up to the waterfall. The path is flat and easy to walk. The waterfall is forceful, and you will get unrelentingly sprayed as you approach it.

You might even see a rainbow on a sunny day, adding its finishing touch to an already stunning waterfall.

You can climb steps to view Skogafoss from above. There are a little over 500 stairs to get to the top!

At the top, there is a hiking trail that follows the Skoga River back into the valley, and it’s filled with additional waterfalls if you’re up for a long, extended day hike.

Skogafoss Tips

  • Best Time to Visit : Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid crowds and for better photography lighting.
  • Appropriate Footwear : Wear waterproof and sturdy shoes, as the area can be slippery and wet.
  • Explore Beyond the Base : Climb the staircase to the top of the waterfall for a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape.
  • Nearby Camping : There’s a camping ground close to the waterfall, offering a great spot for those who want to stay overnight.

A figure in red stands under a rainbow over Skogafoss waterfall in South Iceland.

Right next door to Skogafoss is the waterfall Kvernufoss . This is one of South Iceland’s less frequented gems. Fewer tourists know of its existence, but it’s certainly not lacking in beauty.

To get to Kvernufoss, you’ll take the same exit off the Ring Road for Skogafoss, but instead of following the signs to the left for Skogafoss, continue straight down Skogar to the end of the road and turn right.

You’ll park near Hotel Edda and climb a short ladder over a fence into the valley. It takes about 10-15 minutes to reach Kvernufoss. The walk is comfortable, requiring very little in the way of elevation gain or rocky terrain.

The path ends right up alongside the waterfall and provides you with plenty of excellent viewing spots. And like Seljalandsfoss, you can even walk behind it!

Though the path is easily navigated in the summer months, in the winter, it is often covered in ice and can be dangerous. Bring crampons to stabilize your feet on the slippery ground and exercise caution.

Kvernufoss Tips

  • Off the Beaten Path : Kvernufoss, located near Skógar, is less crowded than its famous neighbor Skogafoss, offering a more tranquil experience.
  • Hiking Trail : Access the waterfall via a short, scenic hike (about 20 minutes one way) through a gorge. The trail is relatively easy but can be slippery.
  • Opportunity to Walk Behind : Like Seljalandsfoss, Kvernufoss offers the chance to walk behind the waterfall, a unique and picturesque experience.
  • Photography Tips : The natural scenery and lesser foot traffic make it an excellent spot for photography. Morning or late afternoon light is ideal.

Kvernufoss waterfall flowing over rugged and mossy cliffs into a pool.

Right on the edge of the highlands in South Iceland sits Haifoss, an impressive 400-foot waterfall. It is one of the highest waterfalls in Iceland. Haifoss thunders down right next to its partner waterfall, Granni (which translates to neighbor).

It is possible to hike down to the falls if you have the time, but the view from the top is incredible and easily accessible from the parking lot.

In winter, Haifoss is usually inaccessible unless you are driving there in buses or jeeps designed for winter weather and icy gravel roads. Don’t attempt the drive unless you are in an appropriate vehicle. Even in summer, the gravel roads are rocky and full of potholes and require slow driving.

Haifoss Tips

  • Spectacular Height : Háifoss is one of Iceland’s tallest waterfalls, plunging about 122 meters into a dramatic canyon, offering stunning views.
  • Rough Access Road : The road to Háifoss is gravel and can be rough, so a 4×4 vehicle is recommended, especially outside of the summer months.
  • Weather Considerations : The area can be windy and cold, even in summer. Dress in layers and bring windproof clothing.
  • No Facilities Nearby : This is a remote location with no facilities, so bring your own food, water, and any necessary supplies.

View from edge of gorge of Haifoss and Granni waterfalls in South Iceland.

The Golden Circle

The Golden Circle is one of Iceland’s most famous and heavily trafficked tourist routes, and for good reason.

This South Iceland road trip hits three major stops; Thingvellir National Park, Gullfoss Waterfall, and Strokkur Geyser. Other stops such as Kerid Crater and the Secret Lagoon can be added to your Golden Circle itinerary as well.

Thingvellir National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where Iceland’s first parliament was formed back in 930 AD. It is also the site of a giant rift valley that marks the meeting of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.

Strokkur is an amazing geyser that erupts at 5-7 minute intervals. Crowds of tourists gather around Strokkur in anticipation of its burst of water and steam shooting up into the air.

This South Iceland road trip is completed with a trip to Gullfoss Waterfall . In the summer months, it is common to see a rainbow arching over the waterfall.

Though south coast Iceland spoils you with an abnormally large number of impressive waterfalls, Gullfoss is rightfully among the top. The waterfall has both upper and lower viewing platforms, and we suggest spending some time at both.

The Golden Circle Tips

  • Thingvellir National Park : A UNESCO World Heritage site, known for its geological significance and historical importance as the site of Iceland’s first parliament.
  • Geysir Geothermal Area : Witness the Strokkur geyser, which erupts every few minutes. The area is also home to numerous hot springs and mud pots.
  • Gullfoss Waterfall : A powerful and picturesque waterfall, Gullfoss is one of Iceland’s most iconic and accessible waterfalls. Accessibility and Facilities : The Golden Circle is easily accessible from Reykjavik and well-equipped with visitor facilities, making it ideal for a day trip.

Strokkur Geyser erupting into a pink and blue sunset sky.

Reykjadalur Hot Springs

If you’ve ever wanted to bathe in a hot river right in the middle of nature, you should make Reykjadalur Hot Springs a part of your South Coast itinerary.

Just 45 minutes from Reykjavik, Reykjadalur Hot Springs is the perfect day trip from the capital. The well-maintained trail to the hot springs is roughly 45 minutes to an hour and is easy to moderate with steep sections.

When you reach the part of the river that is safe for bathing, you can change on a wooden platform with partitions. Privacy is lacking, so be aware.

Arrive in the early morning or late evening (when you can enjoy the midnight sun) to avoid the biggest crowds. There is nothing quite like bathing in a river surrounded by stunning nature, and you’ll no doubt be glad you made this stop to kick off or end your South Iceland road trip.

Reykjadalur Tips

  • Hiking Required : Prepare for a moderately challenging hike of about 3 km (1.9 miles) each way. The path is well-marked but can be steep in places.
  • Bring Bathing Suits and Towels : Don’t forget your swimsuit and a towel for the hot springs, along with a waterproof bag for your belongings.
  • No Changing Facilities : Change into your swimwear before the hike or be prepared to change outdoors, as there are no formal changing facilities.

People bathing in Reykjadalur Hot Springs with a boardwalk nearby.

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach

One of the more famous stops along Iceland’s South Coast is Reynisfjara Beach , known for its signature black sand and towering basalt columns. This beach is among Iceland’s most impressive black sand beaches and was even featured in the TV show Game of Thrones .

There are so many incredible spots along the beach to enjoy, and one of the top things to do in southern Iceland. However, you should be aware that the beach is developing a reputation for its large sleeper waves. Be aware and don’t get too close to the water.

There is an impressive collection of rock formations, including a cliff of basalt columns that seem to rise out of the sand. This is a prime photography location, and you’ll see many tourists climbing the uneven columns to pose for a picture. This is truly one of the best things to do in Vik!

Reynisfjara Tips

  • Beware of Sneaker Waves : The beach is known for its unpredictable and potentially dangerous waves. Stay well back from the water and never turn your back to the sea.
  • Basalt Columns and Caves : Explore the striking basalt columns and caves, but be cautious of the tide and waves when near them.
  • Dress for Windy Conditions : Reynisfjara is often windy, so wear windproof clothing and be prepared for chilly conditions, even in summer.
  • Parking and Facilities : There is a parking area close to the beach, with restroom facilities available. A café is also nearby for refreshments.

Basalt columns at Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach under a cloudy sky.

Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon

Though the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon is a 5-hour drive from Reykjavik, it is well worth the trip. This is one of the top southern Iceland attractions and is so vastly different from anything else you’ll have seen along the rest of the coast. Located in the east part of South Iceland, Jorkulsarlon is a stunning lagoon filled with floating icebergs.

The lagoon is ever-changing as the surrounding glacier continues to melt, and new ice blocks fall. During the summer, you can take a boat tour through the lagoon and get an up-close view of the icebergs.

Across the street is a black sand beach called Diamond Beach. It sets itself apart from other black sand beaches like Reynisfjara Beach because the entire beach is covered in clear, sparkling ice.

The contrast of the black sand against the clear ice is striking and makes for some powerful photographs.

Jokulsarlon Tips

  • Boat Tours : Consider taking a boat tour to get up close to the icebergs. Zodiac tours offer a more adventurous experience, while amphibian boats are more stable and family-friendly.
  • Wildlife Spotting : Keep an eye out for seals, which are often seen lounging on the icebergs or swimming in the lagoon.
  • Photography Opportunities : The lagoon offers stunning photo opportunities, especially during sunrise or sunset when the light is softer.
  • Dress Warmly : Even in summer, it can be chilly near the glacier, so dress in warm layers and bring a waterproof jacket.

Solheimasandur Plane Wreck

This popular South Iceland tourist destination is the result of a DC-3 U.S. Navy plane running out of fuel and crashing on Solheimasandur Beach in 1973.

Fortunately, everyone survived, but the body of the plane was abandoned, making it one of the best places to see in South Iceland. The parking lot to access the plane wreck is only 10-minutes down the South Coast Ring Road from Skogafoss Waterfall.

On the Ring Road, you’ll come across a large parking lot designed for visitors to the Solheimasandur Plane Wreck .

The path is flat and relatively easy but will take you roughly 45 minutes to an hour each way. On a windy day, the walk can be particularly frustrating, as you have to fight the wind resistance as well.

The plane doesn’t come into sight until the very end of your walk. Get your camera ready, and be prepared to photograph the wreckage.

Solheimasandur Plane Wreck Tips

  • Prepare for a Long Walk : The walk to the plane wreck is about 4 km (2.5 miles) each way on flat, open terrain, so wear comfortable walking shoes.
  • No Shelter on the Route : The path to the wreck is exposed with no shelter from the elements. Dress appropriately for the weather, including wind protection.
  • Photography Etiquette : The site is popular for photography. Be respectful of others taking photos and wait your turn for that perfect shot.
  • No Facilities : There are no facilities at the site or along the walk, so bring water, snacks, and any other necessities with you.

Seljavallalaug Swimming Pool

The Seljavallalaug Swimming Pool is another amazing hot spring on the South Coast, but it is farther from the city. It will take a two-hour drive and a twenty-minute hike to reach the oldest pool in Iceland.

While it is a famous and scenic hot spring in Iceland, it might not live up to your expectations. The pool is not the hottest at about 68 to 86°F and the changing rooms can be dirty. Do not be surprised to find algae in the water.

Even so, the pool is super photogenic and the historical aspect makes it interesting too. It was built in 1923 and was once where locals learned to swim.

Today, tourists take advantage of the free price to take a dip in a pool nestled among mountains. Make sure to leave no trace and pack out all your trash.

Seljavallalaug Tips

  • Access by Hike : It involves a short hike (about 20 minutes) to reach the pool. The path is relatively easy, but good walking shoes are recommended.
  • Rustic and Remote : Seljavallalaug is one of Iceland’s oldest swimming pools, offering a rustic, natural experience in a remote setting.
  • No Facilities : There are very basic changing facilities, but no showers or other amenities. Bring your own towels and be prepared for a minimalistic experience.

Dverghamrar, also known as the Dwarf Rocks, is a unique hidden gem on the South Coast.

This is a beautiful area to explore, especially in summer when it is lush and green. There is also a waterfall nearby called Foss at Sída adding even more magic to the scenery.

Dverghamrar is just off the Ring Road near the small village of Kirkjubaejarklaustur. Definitely add this stop to your south Iceland itinerary,

Dverghamrar Tips

Dyrholaey is an interesting and photogenic sea arch next to the Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach . If you are looking for amazing, sweeping views, this is where you can find them.

To get to the peninsula’s viewpoint, you’ll have to drive a gravel road, and a 4×4 is recommended, especially in winter. This open area is super windy, too, and it can get cold. Even so, it is a spectacular spot for photography with panoramic views.

This is also a great place to spot seabirds. Puffins are especially popular and cute. Bring binoculars or a telephoto camera lens to see them close up on the cliffside.

Þakgil, or Thakgil, translates to “Roof Canyon” and looks like a landscape out of Middle Earth.

Hiking through this South Iceland attraction will give you views of mountains, valleys, volcanos, and glaciers. This is the perfect slice of Icelandic landscapes.

As you explore the many miles of trails, it is likely you will find yourself alone in nature since not many people hike here. It is not as close to the Ring Road as other stops at about 7 miles but is so worth it.

There is also one of the best Iceland campgrounds here. It is a pretty spot with summer bringing greenery on all sides. A natural cave with picnic tables makes a unique place for a meal.

Þakgil Tips

  • Camping Facilities : Þakgil offers unique camping experiences, with options for tents, campervans, or rentable cabins. Check availability in advance.
  • Hiking Trails : There are several hiking trails ranging from easy to challenging, offering spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and canyons.

  • Bring Supplies : Due to its remoteness, bring all necessary supplies, including food, water, and any hiking or camping gear you might need.

Vatnajokull National Park

There are some epic national parks in Iceland, and Vatnajokull National Park is one of them. In 2008, Jokulsargljufur and Skaftafell National Parks were combined to form the biggest national park in Europe.

At 5,459 square miles, this World Heritage Site has plenty to explore including the second-largest glacier in Europe. Vatnajokull glacier covers more than 8% of the country.

Make sure to book a guide if you want to hike the glacier or see the ice caves. You can also go snowmobiling here, which is a memorable South Iceland activity. Don’t forget to check out our list of the best Ice caves in Iceland!

Since this is Iceland, there are of course a bunch of waterfalls here too. Svartifoss is one of the most iconic southern Iceland waterfalls with towering black basalt columns surrounding it. The hike is about two miles roundtrip and is rated easy.

Vatnajokull National Park Tips

  • Diverse Landscapes : The park encompasses a variety of landscapes from glaciers, ice caves, and volcanic areas to waterfalls and black sand plains.

You’ll drive for a few minutes from the Ring Road to reach the standalone Hjorleifshofdi rock formation that hosts the cave.

The cave has two big openings with the upper hole looking like a popular Jedi Master. The silhouette becomes even more obvious from the inside

Another cool fact about this area is that it was used as a filming location for the opening scenes of Star Wars: Rogue One. That is just an added bonus for any Star Wars lover.

Gigjagja Tips

  • Unique Geological Feature : Gígjagjá is a striking cave formation created by volcanic activity, showcasing Iceland’s dynamic geology.
  • Lava Field Surroundings : The cave is set within a vast lava field, providing a dramatic and otherworldly landscape to explore.

Mulagljufur Canyon

Mulagljufur Canyon is a rugged and quintessentially Icelandic landscape found just off the Ring Road near the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. This South Coast hidden gem and worthy of being on your southern Iceland itinerary!

The moderate-rated hike is three miles roundtrip and has steep portions. Don’t focus on the burn in your legs as you head uphill, instead enjoy the amazing views of the mossy cliffs and otherworldly beauty.

You will also love the ribbon of water that cuts through the canyon and the waterfall Mulafoss. This waterfall cascades down for about 328 feet, creating a beautiful scene.

This is easily one of the best canyons in Iceland and since it is less popular, it will be less crowded too. It is a great place for a moody photoshoot.

Mulagljufur Canyon Tips

  • Scenic Hiking Trails : The canyon offers breathtaking hiking trails with stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including waterfalls and the canyon itself.
  • Less Crowded : Múlagljúfur Canyon is less known and often less crowded than other popular spots in Iceland, offering a more serene experience.

Hrunalaug Hot Spring

If you are looking for a remote and cheap hot spring in South Iceland, make time to drop by the Hrunalaug Hot Spring . Located near the Golden Circle, this small hot spring only costs about $7.50 which helps the landowner with the upkeep.

The pools only fit about ten people, and it can get crowded. Keep that in mind when planning on when you will visit.

The hot spring is about a five-minute walk from the parking lot. There is a small shed you can use to change, but it does not provide much privacy.

Depending on where you sit in the pools, the temperature ranges from about 90 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit. As you soak, you can admire the rolling hills that surround you.

As always, respect the land and pack out any trash you bring in. Leave the hot springs better than you found them so people can continue to enjoy this slice of beauty.

Hrunalaug Hot Spring Tips

  • Small and Cozy : Hrunalaug is a small, natural hot spring, offering a more intimate and rustic soaking experience compared to larger, commercial hot springs.
  • Changing Facilities : There are very basic changing facilities available, but they are quite primitive, so be prepared for a minimalistic setup.
  • Preserve the Environment : As it’s a natural site, it’s crucial to respect the surroundings by not leaving any trash and keeping the area clean.
  • Parking and Access : There’s a small parking area near the spring, and from there, it’s a short walk to reach the hot spring. Be mindful of private property in the area.

Best iceland south coast tours not to miss out on:, glacier hiking tours on south coast.

Knowing that Iceland is often called the country of "fire and ice," it would be a sin to miss an opportunity to explore its "icey" side and the country's beautiful glaciers from up close. During the glacier hiking tour, you'll learn about the glacier, how it's formed, and some other interesting facts.

If you're curious about going on a glacier hiking adventure, but you're afraid that you're not quite ready, don't worry, as there are different kinds of tours suited for all types of travelers. Your first acquaintance with a glacier could be going on a glacier walk on the Sólheimajökull glacier . This 11-kilometer-long glacier tongue is part of a bigger glacier – Myrdalsjokull. What's exciting and important to know about Sólheimajökull is that because of its shape and location, this glacier is highly sensitive to climate change and prone to retreat. Due to global warming, glaciers might disappear in a couple of hundred years. So don't miss out on the opportunity to explore Sólheimajökull and see its blue ice, distinct formations, and crevasses without putting too much effort into preparing for the trip.

Before you hit the glacier, you'll put on the gear and your glacier guide will explain everything you need to know and give safety instructions. As stunning as they are, glaciers can also be dangerous because some of their parts are fragile. So following, listening, and trusting your guide is crucial.

The South Coast of Iceland is also where the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull, is located. All you need to immerse yourself into a true icy adventure is crampons, a helmet, and an ice ax, and you're good to go on the Falljökull glacier cap in Skaftafell Nature Reserve. The glacier tongue is a part of the majestic Vatnajökull glacier, which is surrounded by the stunning nature of Vatnajökull National Park. During the glacier hiking tour, you'll see and admire Icelandic nature and understand the "art" of glaciers and how they're formed. If you want to truly experience the glacier, a glacier hiking and ice climbing tour is the best option.
