Minelab Safari – A Professional Metal Detector For A Beginner (Review, Photos+)

by Detectorist · 04/25/2017

Greetings reader! One of my fellow detectorists bought himself a Minelab Safari and shared his experience and review of this interesting and not very common metal detector. I thank him for the review and give him the word:

What kind of metal detector is the Minelab Safari?

Well, finally I got my hands on a professional level device with a rather big price of 700 euros and a so-called model range in 2009. By the way, remember what gadgets were at that time and how they were? At the time, it was a quite competitive and serious piece of engineering. What experience do I have with other detectors before I bought the safari? I used to have the Ace 250 with the Nel Sharpshooter coil and the Fisher F44. These detectors are very easy to understand, and because I am the person lazy and I do not like any complicated settings, I appreciate the simple and clear interfaces.

I bought a rain cover for my detector, because after all the metal detector is not waterproof and it is necessary to protect expensive equipment.

What I liked

Turning on the detector I was very pleasantly surprised that the menu was so simple that after a couple of minutes you already know how to use it. The menu has no “hidden” mode and settings. It is easy to understand, but anyway I would recommend to read the instruction manual before use – then all questions about setting up and using the detector will disappear.

The detector has simplicity, the high quality, but a pretty decent weight, because it uses 8 AA batteries. But one thing that threw me off with the Minelab Safari was the promised FBS technology which allows the metal detector to work simultaneously on a 28-frequencies – from 1.5 to 100 kHz, and this should allow (in theory) equally detect large objects at the maximum depth (due to the low frequencies – 3 kHz), and small things (due to the high frequency spectrum – 20 kHz or more). Since Safari costed less than the E-Trac, my choice fell on it.

Without reading the manual, I went detecting to a sand area nearby. The device immediately began giving all kinds of signals, but I quickly understood that they were trash signals. Suddenly, among all this trash I got a good signal, I dug: a modern coin. After about half an hour I had found two coins, and please note – no foil or other kinds of trash.

Still I hesitated, a detector in such a range can’t be this simple and perhaps there are some hidden features, but after reading the manual, I found nothing. I have the impression that the detector either is too smart, or I did not really understand what it signals to me.

Of course, I wanted to hurry and get some experience in the field. In the fields, I had the same result, my friend with the Deus dug a lot of trash, while I only got a few signals, one of them being a brass ring. In 4 hours I dug three signals, but something to notice – no foil and wire, like a fellow with the Deus.

What I disliked

It seemed to me that detecting was a bit boring, because you have to swing the coil very slowly, and even then, when you hear a signal you have to go back and check it, and if the place is very littered, the detector slowly receives the signals – this could be a slow processor and a large amount of information coming at it, yet at the same time it scans in 26 frequencies, and when the signal reaches the ears, the place where the object was, is now gone.

With the long and slow swipes, and the long time between digs, your hand gets quickly tired and begin to freeze. The detector is very interesting and intelligent. It is quite suitable for those who do not like a lot of digging and only want to dig good targets.

The secret of detecting with the Minelab Safari

To get maximum results in detecting, you better wave it slow over the fields, which will give a minimum of signal passes. It is better to move slowly, but to collect more finds. But again, for the exploration it is always better to have an extra detector, one with which you can quickly run through the field with to find the coin areas (the coins on the field never lie evenly and are concentrated more in certain areas), and then to search there with the Minelab safari (mentally make squares of 5 by 5 meters, for example).

The depth on it is trimmed (it is not the E-Trac, but it also costs less), and therefore it is better to replace the standard coil to another, from a third party. A gain of 20% -30% is guaranteed.

And what is your experience with the Safari? Do you have something to share? All the reviews on the metal detectors and search techniques we have gathered here. You do not know where to start digging? We collect all our “diggers tips”  here!

I disagree with your post I’ve had my safari for a good few years found good stuff don’t hardly dig trash as you said in your review if you only want to dig good targets well who wants to dig rubbish certainly not me I think you need abit more time with the safari yes you do have to have a slow swing but that’s not that bad

Different people, different opinions 🙂 I prefer quick swing, for example, so looking for a fast response.

Hello, I am a safari owner and I want to change it with something better. I am searching for coins, relics, jewelry in fields, mountains, beaches, old houses and parks. I want faster recovery, deeper depth, and better target identification. What detectors do you suggest until 700euros budget?

Hello, George! Can recommend the XP ORX, I think it will be the perfect choice.

What is your opinion about Teknetics T-2, Fisher F-19, Nokta/Makro Simplex/ and Minelab equinox?

Explorer , safari , etrac ..

Tbey are more or less all the same , Providing real FBS system and resl accuracy.

Etrac is not much deeper fir sure .. The safari is just a little more handicapped sinceyu can tweak it less.

The explorer 2 , altough older has the same depth as the etrac.. sinoly becaue you can tweak it as you want . Etrac is just a little bit faster .

All the explorers are great , superb if you ask me . Low and slow will make you a better detectirist and slows you down forcing you to investigate a little better .

I have run them all and no other detectir ever called a detector is better then one of them wich does not mean a tesoro vaquero or deus is bad , No , they are great tools too , fast , light and all ..

Yet they wiol Never be a explorer

I am a beginner and plan to search for gold in the out back scrub lands of Australia. I am only looking for gold nuggets and do not have interest for coils or other rings in the sand etc. Is the Minelab safari Pro the ideal starter detector for gold nuggets or would another version of the Minelab range be better perhaps where price is not the essential factor to consider.

I recently obtained a Safari. I’m disappointed that there is not a verifiable way of seeing and feeling confident about its ground balance. I guess That I’m just supposed to just believe? Other detectors in this price range make ground balancing a big deal. With instructions like pumping the detector up and down to the ground to achieve a good ground balance. I haven’t found any instruction with the Safari other than it’s automatic. What gives?

That’s true Safari, Explorer SE and E-Trac have only “automatic Ground Balance”. It was specially made for more effective fight with heavy ground conditions. The point is not to use “automanic Gain Control” it decrease depth significantly. It is recommended to use “manual Gain Control” and select it properly for better depth.

I live in central Florida. The only historical significance of this state for metal detecting are the coastal areas.

As I heard Safari is very effective on salt beaches for Spanish gold coins, golden rings and other massive jewelry and not effective for thin golden chains.

Multi-IQ Simultaneous Multi-Frequency

Low frequencies typically give more depth on large targets than high frequencies, which are usually more sensitive to small targets. With Multi-IQ you can operate across the full spectrum of frequencies simultaneously for maximum results.

I am thinking about buying a new Minelab Safari. Does anyone on this site use one? if so, what are your thoughts on this machine? My Fisher F5 struggles with the minerialized soil and hard packed clay we have here in southern riverside county. I already own an Minelab Excal 1000 for the beach, so I'm looking for a really good coin killing DIRT machine. All comments are welcome, "thanks" in advanced. BV

Golden said: Gidday Baja, I also use an Excalibur 1000, but also own the Minelab Quattro, and from the reviews I've read, the Safari is kind of an upgrade from it. The "Minelab Times" states that the new Safari features: An 11 inch waterproof coil (Quattro has 10.5 waterproof coil), improved target ID in High Trash Density, improved discrimination, improved audio response and improved depth gauge. It has new VCO style pin point mode, better balance and faster start up. It has the same operating modes as the Quattro: coin, coin & jewelery, relic and All metal. It mentions that you don't have to press any "salt" switches or make adjustments from land to sea detecting, so I'm assuming what it's saying is that you no longer have to noise cancel or 'ground balance' between the different detecting conditions as you detect. If that's the case, it probably also applies to detecting near other detectors, as with the Quattro, soon as you come in close proximity to another detector, and I mean a few feet, you noise cancel, and that stabilises the detector when detecting near others. Have to check that out further. Toggling between the modes is as easy as with the Quattro, and you can still create your own disc patterns to overcome trouble with junk. The Safari still utilises the FBS (Full Band Spectrum) of 28 frequencies so no problem with digging deep targets and sensitive ones. I imagine it functions pretty much like my Minelab Quattro, with a few obvious improvements. But for me, I don't know if up-grading to a Safari will really improve my detecting in any way. For someone like yourself starting off on an entirely new relic/coin detector, it's a step up from your cheaper detectors, with a considerable learning curve that goes with it, like the Quattro. It'll take time, patience and persistence to master it as do the earlier models of the Quattro, Explorer series. I don't know if there is a manual brought out by Andy Sabish, but if so, I'd get a hold of it, as it'll be better than the manual that comes with the detector, as he'll cover more questions and go into a little more depth, going by the Explorer and Quattro manuals written by him. All the best with your choice, and hope this info has helped somewhat. Golden Click to expand...

Go with the Safari, and if your not skittish, you can get a very clean used one on eBay for around $750

Safari - go for it You will not be dissapointed and follow the used one advice, you can get some really neat deals. I had gottena quattro and loved it so much wanted to upgrade to the Safari which scans a little faster than quattro and has the pinpointing ability changed as well as the coil. You get a much better coil with the safari. Excellent machines, finding deep and worthwhile targets in areas that have been heavily hunted

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

minelab safari 11 metal detector

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

minelab safari 11 metal detector

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

minelab safari 11 metal detector

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

minelab safari 11 metal detector

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

minelab safari 11 metal detector

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

minelab safari 11 metal detector

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

minelab safari 11 metal detector

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
