This is one of the prime beaches in Nasugbu, Batangas. It runs for about 2.9 kilometers into the South China Sea and overlooks Fortune Island, Nasugbu Bay, and Calayo Bay.

Historically, it was the site of the Battle of San Diego between the Spanish and Dutch armies in 1600. Currently, it’s home to a local seaside community and upscale resorts — Club Punta Fuego and Peninsula de Punta Fuego Resort.

Punta Fuego is a great choice for families and those who want a luxurious beach vacation in Batangas. Its shores are ideal for swimming and other activities such as snorkeling, banana boat, and wake boarding.

Masasa Beach in Tingloy, Batangas

Previously a secret known only among the locals, Masasa Beach has grown to be one of the most popular beaches in Batangas. Its main beach has fine, white sands and clear, blue water that is often compared to Boracay or Calaguas.

Aside from the beach, there are other things that endear Masasa Beach to the public. It’s easily accessible — you only need to get to Anilao Port, from which there are plenty of boats headed to Masasa. It also offers various activities including snorkeling, swimming with turtles, and visiting caves. You can explore the underwater beauty of Masasa Beach with just snorkel and fins, but if you want to discover the best spots, it’s better to join a tour instead.

There is a range of available resorts in Masasa Beach, including modest resorts and homestays with kitchen in case you want to do the cooking for your group.

Calayo Beach is an underrated beach in Nasugbu, Batangas. While most beaches in this area are privately owned, Calayo Beach is a public beach so it is open to everyone. It has a relaxing light-brown shore that’s perfect for swimming and water activities such as banana boat. It’s also the jump-off point for island hopping to Bituin Cove, Santelmo Marine Sanctuary, and other nearby beach coves.

You can find modest resorts in Calayo Beach. Some also have inflatable islands perfect for kids.

Located about 45 minutes off the mainland in Batangas City, Verde Island is home to pristine beach coves and snorkeling and diving sites.

Verde Island isn’t as popular as other locations in Batangas. Perhaps this is due to the fact that there are limited public boat schedules to the island or the standard options for accommodations, which mostly include modest beach resorts and camping grounds. However, those who can overlook these issues can enjoy one of the best beaches in Batangas!

The best activity in Verde Island is diving. It’s located along the Verde Island Passage, which is considered the “center of the center of the marine biodiversity in the world.” Non-divers can also enjoy its attractions through a boat tour, which includes snorkeling spots and the white-sand cove of Mahabang Buhangin. Cueva Sitio, a cave that leads to the other side of Verde Island, is also a must-visit spot.

Hali in Bituin Cove, Nasugbu, Batangas

Bituin Cove is a private beach cove located just several minutes away from Calayo Beach. This cozy spot is pristine and undeveloped, making it a popular choice for backpackers and beach campers. As there are no establishments here, you need to bring your essential camping gears including food and water. Some tour operators rent out tents for convenience.

It has a mix of sandy and pebbly shoreline, with a colony of small corals just a few meters away. It’s a great place for casual swimming and snorkeling.

Its distance from cities also makes it a good place for watching stars at night.

Hali in Fortune Island

Once an abandoned resort, Fortune Island is now a popular destination for day tours or overnight camping.

This island is located about 1-1.5 hour away from the mainland in Nasugbu, Batangas. Its highlights include a Greek-inspired acropolis, high cliffs for cliff jumping, and a beautiful white-sand beach.

Cottages are available for rent, but other than these there are no other establishments in the island. Prepare your essentials including food, water, and sunscreen and enjoy the raw beauty that this island offers.

Ask anyone who’s alive in the 80s or 90s and they can probably attest to the popularity of Matabungkay Beach in Lian, Batangas. Locals and foreigners flocked here to enjoy its white-sand shores. Over the years, the beach’s appearance has changed but it still remains a good option for family trips.

What makes Matabungkay Beach unique is the floating bamboo rafts (balsa) which are pushed out to the sea. You can bring your family into the raft to rest, eat, or jump straight to the surrounding water.

Aside from this, other things to do include snorkeling at a reef about 50 meters away from the shore, kayaking, paddleboarding, paddleboating, and more.

There are different hotels and resorts you can stay at in Matabungkay Beach. Some are designed for typical Filipino get-togethers with videoke, while others maintain a more tranquil environment.

Malabrigo Point isn’t as popular as other beach destinations such as Laiya or Nasugbu, but it’s a haven for those who want a quiet place to relax and unwind, as well as professional scuba divers.

This beach is located in Lobo, Batangas. From Manila, it takes about 3 hours of driving through mountain and beachside roads to get here. However, the drive is worth it as you’ll find a nice pebble shoreline with clear water and nearby diving spots such as the Submarine Garden, a marine sanctuary teeming with fishes and corals.

Here you can book at modest beachfront resorts, upgraded resorts with pools overlooking the ocean , or private beach houses for exclusive stays .

Malabrigo Point Beach is also close to the Malabrigo Point Lighthouse, which was built during the Spanish period and is currently one of the oldest working lighthouses in the Philippines.

Sepoc Island in Batangas

Sepoc Beach is a private beach cove managed by Eagle Point Beach and Dive Resort in Mabini, Batangas. Due to its exclusivity, it’s not as crowded as other similar beaches even in the summer.

Here you can swim at the white-sand beach or enjoy a sun bath. There are beachfront facilities here like a dining hall and restrooms; however, as of our visit they do not seem to be in use.

Sepoc Beach can be visited as a stop during island hopping tours in Tingloy. Guests at Eagle Point Dive Resort can also pay for a 15-minute boat ride to get here.

Wonder at the beauty of Santelmo Cove, a private beach accessible to guests booked at Pico Sands Hotel in Nasugbu, Batangas. This beach features fine, creamy sands and pristine water perfect for beach bumming and a viewing deck that offers an overlooking view of the island. It’s also close to a marine sanctuary where you can snorkel or freedive.

A package day tour to Santelmo Cove by the hotel includes free lunch and water, so you don’t have to worry about preparing food beforehand!

With a gorgeous shoreline and affordable tents for rent, Manuel Uy is a backpacker’s dream. There are no establishments here except for humble toilet and shower stalls, so you need to bring or rent a tent and just enjoy the creamy-sand beach with shallow water typical of Calatagan beaches. You can also charter a boat for island hopping to Starfish Island and Sand Bar.

Kayaking in calatagan floating house

If you’re looking for something more comfortable, you can head to nearby resorts such as Aquaria Water Park and Stilts Calatagan Resort. There are also floating cottages in Calatagan that you can book if you want to experience staying in the middle of the ocean.

As common as its name is, Sombrero Island is still a worthwhile place to visit. This hat-shaped island in Tingloy, Batangas, features a small beach cove where you can beach bum and swim. However, it’s more often visited for its surrounding coral reef, which is said to be one of the best in the area.

Paraiso de Berlonggo

Berlonggo Cove (or Paraiso de Berlonggo) is a private beach cove located in a 40-hectare property in the coastal town of Calayo in Nasugbu, Batangas.

With its pristine white sand and clear water, it offers a peaceful getaway for families. It’s also close to a snorkeling site that is part of the Isla Verde Passage.

Currently, it only has camping sites for overnight stays, but resort rooms are already in construction.

2. taal volcano.

tourist spots near batangas

Taal Volcano is one of the most picturesque Batangas tourist spots because of its distinctive lake setting. Taal Volcano is the second-most active volcano in the Philippines with its active state.

However, due to its eruption last January 12, 2020, the Taal Volcano has been closed in the meantime.

Before the eruption, this Taal volcano is a go-to place for local and foreign visitors. Back then, you could book a tour to have an up-close experience in Taal. You will be riding a boat going to the island volcano and trek or doing a horseback ride to the crater. Boating and kayaking are among the things worth trying too.

You can still appreciate the marvelous beauty of Taal from afar. The most famous overlooking spot is in Tagaytay in Cavite. If you stay in Batangas and wish to have a fantastic view, you can also book hotels in Talisay.

3. Fortune Island

Fortune Island turned into one of the picture worthy Batangas tourist spots, thanks to the ruins of the abandoned construction of resort in the lone island.

Spend a quick day tour at Fortune Island and marvel at its mysterious yet amusing landscape.

Due to freshwater scarcity, the supposed luxury development here resulted in the termination of the project. However, the remnants display a bizarre and unique view; the most famous are the Parthenon-inspired columns.

However, reaching the island takes about an hour of boat ride from Nasugbu. Tourists visiting Fortune Island can enjoy fun activities like cliff diving, swimming, snorkeling, and sightseeing.

Enjoy taking postcard-worthy images overlooking the vast sea. Here, you can appreciate a straightforward Athens vibe without breaking the bank.

Adventure seekers shouldn’t miss diving around the shipwrecks as well. You can also visit the lighthouse after a 30-minute of trekking.

During summer, visiting Batangas tourist spots like Fortune Island is perfect for enjoying the sun and sea while avoiding the rough waves.

4. Malabrigo Lighthouse

For the lighthouse enthusiasts, the Malabrigo Lighthouse features eye-catchy astonishing architectural design.

The Malabrigo Lighthouse in Lobo, Batangas, is one of the two working lighthouses in the province.

Guiding sailors cruising the eastern section of Verde Island to Tayabas Bay, the lighthouse stands the test of time since 1891.

Spanish engineer Guillermo Brockman designed the Malabrigo Lighthouse. On the other hand, the construction was undertaken by a Chinese contractor named Jose Garcia.

In 1980, thru the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) aid, the lighthouse had been automated.

In 2006, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines declared the site a National Historic Landmark, which boosts local tourism as a quick addition to your countryside Batangas tourist spots itinerary.

Today, the Pavilion’s Victorian-inspired architecture and the great lighthouse pave the way for tourism in Lobo. It is a perfect spot to do some creative shots while overlooking the majestic bay.

Behind is a stair pavement leading to the beach. Although pebbles spread throughout the shoreline, the place is still a nice place to have a quick retreat.

5. Caleruega Church

tourist spots near batangas

One of the famous Batangas tourist spots for intimate occasions like weddings, baptismal, or retreats is the Caleruega Church .

Situated in the hilly eastern portion of Nasugbu near Tagaytay, many consider this a side trip during their Tagaytay tours.

Well-maintained plants and trees surround the complex. On the other hand, the chilly climate complements the serenity and cleanliness. Besides the beautiful small church, tourists will also love to explore the gardens, hanging bridge, and a souvenir shop.

As you descend from the church, you can see a display of a wooden Station of the Cross. Near the 12th station, you can spot a cafe for quick bites.

There is also a koi pond with towering trees and bushes along its perimeter, keeping the area cool. Besides, a metal handrail and wooden steps let you walk around the pond safely.

One can, indeed, find peace and solemnity in visiting Caleruega. The blooming flowers and whispering trees make you commune with nature, even for a short time.

6. Masasa Beach

Contrasting colors of water and coastline in Masasa Beach; one of the favorite Batangas tourist spots that magnets beach lovers during the weekend.

Tingloy seems to be a dormant municipality until its Masasa Beach catches the shifty eyes of adventure seekers and becomes one of the frequented Batangas tourist spots.

If white sand and clear blue waters are your concepts of a perfect summer destination without breaking the bank, Masasa Beach got your back.

Aside from swimming, tourists can also try snorkeling and island hopping. Besides, you can also trek to the island’s highest point for a rewarding panoramic view.

Living the island life, you can camp in the allotted space front of the beach. Since hotels are still unavailable, many transient houses and ins accommodate travelers.

Reaching Masasa Beach starts with an hour of boat ride from the port of Anilao to Tingloy. After that, you can ride a tricycle going to where you are staying.

Experiencing Masasa Beach is ideal for group travelers spending their long weekends. You can save more on boat rides, accommodations, and deals for water activities.

Aside from the scenic church, you can also visit the other spaces within the parish. A souvenir shop offers religious items so that you can take home some memorabilia.

There is a Chapel of Lights as well, where you can light small candles in varying colors and say those little prayers. Likewise, you can bring home some holy water at the Holy Water Sanctuary. Make sure to bring with you your glass container, though.

The church offers masses every day, and it is best to attend the first mass to avoid the crowd. Keep in mind that parking spaces can be a challenge during peak season.

Although the trails are beginner-friendly, expect some courses to challenge you as you ascend to the summit.

Appreciate the lush green fields around mountain slopes while making your way to the summit. While January to February make a great hiking experience, dry during the summer and wet for the rest of the year, you can still expect unpredictable weather atop.

Note that outdoor Batangas tourist spots like hiking Mount Batulao require a local guide so that you can make the most of your hiking journey.

Top 13 Batangas Tourist Spots to Visit

I was a 21 years old Engineering student in May 2016, when a company came to our school looking for future employees. My friends and I went, took a few exams, got an interview, and in just a few hours was told we had a job waiting for me in Batangas.

Yup, I was hired. We were hired. Needless to say, we were ecstatic. Since we still wanted to take the board exam in October 2016, the company allowed us to do our review and take the exam first. By October, I was an official ECE Engineer! Wohooo! I now have a valid ID.

Since we were already hired in May, we only had to sign the contract to start working fully. On November 7, 2016, my friends and I were now working in Batangas. But what made me say yes to the job? Was it the salary?

No, I was receiving less than 15k a month.

It was Batangas in itself that made me say yes. Before going to Batangas, I googled the place and found a lot of beaches and tourist spots. Growing up in the mountains, I’ve always wanted to live in an area where the beach was only a few minutes away.

But to my dismay, the beach was two hours away. Despite that, my stay in Batangas consisted of frequent trips to the beach and a few more adventures in Laguna.

Here are some of the places worth checking out in Batangas and its surrounding areas that I was able to visit. All of these are just 2 to 3 hours away from Manila, and they’re pretty cheap too.

Beach Camp Batangas

Love camping? You’ll love our list: Where to Beach Camp In Batangas for Less than 400 Pesos

With all of these places in Batangas, there are still tons of destinations that I still have to visit and travel to. I even created a list. The ones mentioned above are just 25 percent of what I’ve written down. I think any person who’d go to Batangas would also fall in love not only with their tourist spots but with the people, too.

After staying there for more than a year, people now ask me if I’m from Batangas because of my accent whenever I speak in Tagalog. Not to mention, the ‘eh’ at the end of every sentence. Haha.

And when I’m in Batangas, I revert to speaking like a Batangueno changing some words:

  • From dito to dine
  • From ito to are
  • From ba to ga
  • From market to palengke (haha!)

The last part was one of the hardest parts for me since we, people from the highlands, prefer to use some English words.

All in all, staying in Batangas is one of my greatest experiences.

With the amazing locals, I found myself falling in love with this place.

If you’ve read my About Me page , you probably already know that I used to work in Batangas. I hail from the Cordillera mountains – Benguet to be exact. When you think about the distance between the two provinces, you’d be asking me what most people ask ‘Why go there?’. Why, indeed.

Detailed travel blog about San Juan Batangas Tourist spots and things to do and San Juan Batangas itinerary.

Imagine being conveyed to a different place at the same time, the town of San Juan, Batangas will leave you in awe with its raw appeal and sundry topography.  It is blissfully located at the Southeastern tip of Batangas province. Surprisingly, it remains out of the radar of most tourists except for Laiya.  Delve into this municipality and at the end of your trip you’ll realize that it’s not only lapped by powdery white sand beaches of Laiya, but it is also lavished with natural resources, packed with adventures and water activities, oozing with history, and delicious food.

THINGS TO DO IN SAN JUAN BATANGAS

Here’s my handpicked list of things to do in San Juan Batangas to help you plan your trip.

1.ISLAND HOPPING IN LAIYA (SAN JUAN, BATANGAS) + SNORKELING

Why is it one of the top things to do in San Juan Batangas?

Jagged, meandering, and studded with tropical beaches and craggy coves – San Juan, Batangas is an ideal escape for the weary urbanites.  Its dramatic coastline, especially around Laiya, is shaped by the incessant waves crashing against coral reef deposits.

Laiya has long been a tourist magnet because of its sun-kissed azure water. But did you know you can also go beach-hopping here or what the locals sell as Laiya Island Hopping? So, pack your swimwear, aqua shoes, snorkeling mask, dry bag, and sunscreen, and head to San Juan, Batangas.

san juan batangas things to do: Laiya island hopping

Frolic in the sand and swim in the turquoise waters of a picturesque beach called Lamesang Bato by the locals.  On Google Maps, it is marked as Locoloco Point . It’s not an island, but a beach attached to the mainland. But it is only accessible by boat since the sprawling, arid lands behind it are private properties.

Interestingly, the shape and look of the beaches and coves in Laiya changes drastically depending on the current. I revisited Lamesang Bato a week later and it looked quite different!  I find it more appealing when the tide is high because the aquamarine water highlights the rock formations.

San Juan Batangas Island Hopping

Lamesang Bato in Laiya, San Juan Batangas

Our next stop for the Laiya, San Juan, Batangas Island Hopping Tour is nicknamed Bato na  Gulagod by the locals, but I found it on Google Maps as Alegre , proudly sitting on the other side of the popular Laiya White Beach. It exudes the vibe of an isolated enclave frozen in time, where you’ll be dwarfed by the sheer-sided cliff embracing its coast.  And what makes Bato na Gulagod beach unique is, it is dappled with natural coral deposit basins where the cerulean seawater gushes in.  I reckon if it’s high tide, visitors can swim in these pools that occur naturally.  Bato na Gulagod may not be as mesmeric as the tropical palm-fringed beach cliches, but if you’re seeking a secluded seaside escape in Batangas, away from the madding crowd, you landed in the right place.

San Juan Batangas Island Hopping

Bato na Gulagod

After Laiya beach-hopping, the last stop of island hopping is snorkeling.  Plunge into the cobalt sea wearing your snorkeling gear and discover the iridescent marine life of San Juan, Batangas.  The natural coral reefs near the coast have been classified as protected sanctuary by DENR.

TRAVEL TIPS:

  • The beaches here are speckled with coral reef deposits that could hurt your feet. Be extra careful, wear sturdy aqua shoes or Crocs. If you’re traveling with seniors/elderly, and kids, assist them.
  • There are no restaurants on the islands, only make-shift stores that sell halo-halo, chips, and soft drinks. If you plan to picnic or have lunch on one of the beach coves in Laiya, bring a packed lunch. Please include the boatman and assistant on your packed meal.
  • Bring your own water flask to keep yourself hydrated.
  • We rented a boat for island hopping at Sigayan Bay Resort.  I recommend it as a jumping-off point for island hopping in Laiya.   The boatmen there are helpful, and their boats are just right enough to carry 10 persons. They accept walk-ins or you can contact them in advance through the following numbers:
  • Jhopet: 0968 622 6279
  • Leboy: 0928 576 6512

Solmera Coast San Juan Batangas

Early morning in Solmera Coast San Juan Batangas

Most tourists heading to San Juan, Batangas go to Laiya to bask in its cerulean beach.  Others just want to R & R and lounge in beach resorts that strive to satisfy their every wish and whim.

san juan blog 42

During our recent trip to San Juan, Batangas, we stayed at Solmera Coast in Brgy. Subukin and Brgy. Calubcub II. It is blissfully sandwiched between San Juan town and Laiya, about 13 minutes away, thus providing ample opportunity for road tripping. Solmera Coast is a nature-inspired beachfront condotel development by DMCI Homes Leisure Residences that is soon to rise in this thriving municipality.

Biking around Solmera Coast

By the time we arrived at Solmera Coast, it was sweltering hot since it’s summer. Thankfully, we were soothed by the warm greetings of the staff at the front desk as they gestured to us to take a comfy seat and handed us fresh wet towels and welcome drinks.

Solmera Coast

The sprawling Solmera Coast is tranquil  and secluded and fringed by soaring palm trees and  beautifully manicured lawns and tropical gardens. I stayed in one of their spacious Asian-inspired breezy villas set by the sea.

Solmera Coast Batangas room

It is decorated with modest and soothing white walls and warm wood  and spruced up with covetable furniture.  A modern minimalist room is what I dig these days. There’s nothing like getting away from a mess to calm an anxious mind.

Solmera Coast Batangas

But perhaps my favorite experience here is waking up to a mesmeric sunrise view over the pink sky, which I can watch directly from my room with floor to ceiling glass windows.  It’s a dreamy escape.

4. choose your adventure at laiya adventure park.

Tucked in a dense, tropical jungle, Laiya Adventure Park is oozing with outdoor adventures to test your stamina, you can try wall climbing, aerial walk, zipline, the giant swing, etc.

SAN JUAN BATANGAS THINGS TO DO: RIDE THE ATV

Getting ready for ATV Ride at Laiya Adventure Park

I like doing adventure activities, but when opportunities present themselves, sometimes I cower.  Like when I tried the free fall here, which turned out to be manageable, because the string attached to my back somehow pulls me back. I guess to stop me from falling hard onto the cemented floor.

I did enjoy the ATV ride. A bit intimidating at first, but it was fun once you get used to the trail.

The zipline was a breeze and since we did it late in the afternoon, I could feel the fresh wind blowing on my face without the harsh sunbeams.  There were also kingfishers sitting quietly on the zipline enjoying the mountain scenery draped by dense forest or perhaps waiting to catch a fish from a nearby river.

Laiya Adventure Park Zipline

BENITO MARASIGAN RUINS AND MUSEUM

SAN JUAN BATANGAS TOURIST SPOT: BENITO MARASIGAN RUINS & MUSEUM

The 3-storey ancestral house of Don Benito and Soledad Marasigan of the prominent Marasigan Family, in Classical Revival architectural style, was built sometime in the 1930’s to represent the boom of the coconut industry.

Unfortunately, in 2009, the massive house was burned down into ruins. The fire reportedly started on the 3 rd floor when the sun glowed directly on the glass window and reflected on the piles of papers and decaying wood creating fire. Today, only the restored ground floor serves as a museum, decorated with old photos, artworks, and intricately carved chairs and cabinets from the olden days.

CASA LOUELLA

Our 2 nd stop for our San Juan, Batangas Heritage Tour was another classical mansion called Casa Louella. Built in 1900’s and originally owned by the Treviño-Magtibay family . It is said that 2 families live on each floor, like a separate household.  Casa Louella was eventually bought by Vicente Lecaroz , the former Mayor of San Juan. But when the Lecaroz family moved to the US, they sold the house and it was acquired by Custodio (Papay Ocus) and Guadalupe (Lola Lucing) Ona , who currently owns the restored house.

SAN JUAN BATANGAS TOURIST SPOTS: CASA LOUELLA

The floor, the ceiling, the pillars, and walls are still original. The current owner just decided to remodel the house, opened the bedrooms downstairs and turned them into a living room, and the entrance to the house, which used to be on the side where the dining room is now, was moved in front. All the classic-looking furniture in the house now is new. The painting of the original house is displayed in the living room. While the photos of the current owners, the Ona Family are on display on the 2 nd floor.  Today, Casa Louella is open to the public and accepts guests for accommodation, small events, weddings, prenup shoots.

CASA SOLEDAD

Casa Soledad, a traditional bahay-na-bato style house initially owned by Santos Luz Lopez and Maria Mercado (Dr. Jose Rizal’s relatives) is another worth-visiting heritage house in San Juan, Batangas.  The couple had 4 children, Don Miguel Lopez (former mayor of San Juan), Arsenio Lopez , Soledad Lopez , and Leonor Lopez .  The house was inherited by Leonor since she was the youngest, but Soledad bought it from her when she got married.

Today, Casa Soledad is managed by the 4 th generation Lopez-Tioseco siblings .  Brando L. Tioseco and Anna L. Tioseco proudly toured us around the classic Bahay-na-Bato of their grandparents.  While most houses that we toured in San Juan were heavily restored or remodeled, what I like about Casa Soledad is, it still has that archaic ancestral house atmosphere.

san juan blog 79

Our first stop is the silong (basement) of the house, which is now covered in Machuca tiles.  Interestingly, the house is still supported by massive wooden pillars, which is typical of old houses back then. The furniture, art pieces, and other objects inside Casa Soledad are mostly antiques.

san juan blog 83

A carved-wooden staircase leads to the spacious living room upstairs, where antique photographs with age-old frames are hanging. A must-see in the neck-swiveling life-size foto- óleo painting of Leonor where she’s wearing a filipiniana dress adorned with real sequins.  This artform is popular in the mid-19 th to 20 th century where black and white photos are enhanced by applying oil paint to make it realistic.

Interestingly, also on display here are prehistoric burial jars and poorly fired earthenware unearthed from the archaeological site in Calubcob, Segundo.

WHITE HOUSE SAN JUAN (AGUEDO MERCADO MANSION)

This elegant white house mansion was built in 1934.  The White House San Juan was originally owned by Aguedo Mercado and Pilar Marasigan, hence the original name Aguedo Mercado House. It used to be a Japanese-era hang out place that was safe from destruction during WWII.  The 4 th generation Mercado family lived here until the current owners – Neil Marundan and family acquired it in 2021.

san juan blog 82

Almost all parts of the house are original like the machuca tiles, the wooden walls, and pillars (except for the comfort room and kitchen which looked like the kitchens used on cooking shows).  Once you step inside, you wouldn’t really feel it’s an old house, the way they restored the wooden floor, cabinets, chairs, and tables that are made of narra, balayong and mulawin wood is by stripping the natural wood color and applying lacquer to give the wood a high gloss finish. While all furniture inside the White House San Juan were refurbished, they also added some modern appliances like aircon and TV and projector to the mini-conference room, which was previously a music room.

CASA LEON (THE PINK HOUSE)

san juan blog 95

This isn’t part of our San Juan, Batangas Heritage Tour, because the house isn’t available for public viewing. This well-preserved “Pink House” is known as Casa Leon, the house of Leon Quizon Mercado , also  known as “Kapitan Leon,” a Katipunero from San Juan, Batangas and relative of Dr. Jose Rizal, our National Hero.

Based on anecdotes,  at age 17, he joined the revolution and also joined the Philippine-American War. After the war, Leon became a prominent farmer  who invested in coconut plantations in Naga City and was nicknamed the “Coconut King of Batangas”.

You can easily find the Leon Mercado House around 2 blocks away from the St. Nepomuceno Church, at the corner of Burgos Street and Castillo Street.

6. VISIT THE SAN JUAN NEPOMUCENO CHURCH AND MUSEUM

Why is it one of the top San Juan Batangas places to see?

san juan batangas church

Towering over Poblacion San Juan is the San Juan Nepomuceno Church named after the town’s patron saint – St. John Nepomuceno, the patron saint of Czechoslovakia and “martyr of the confessional”. His feast is celebrated every May 16th.   He was nicknamed such, because it is believed that St. John refused to reveal to King Wenceslau IV the queen’s dying confession.

san juan blog 101

The church was originally built in San Juan de Bolboc , present day Brgy. Pinagbayanan , from nipa, bamboo, and palm trees. Eventually, the church’s structure was overhauled with stone under Father Damaso Mojica. Still, a devastating flood in 1883 destroyed the church.  So, Fray Celestino Yoldi, moved the settlement from Brgy. Pinagbayan to Calitcalit , present day San Juan.

san juan blog 103

The church was then moved to its Calicalit (present site) in 1894, and the modern belfry tower was added somewhere between 1928 – 1935, that is why it doesn’t seem to match the Baroques-architectural style of the church’s façade. The massive belfry donated by Don Francisco Marasigan which was used before is now on display in front of the church. San Juan Nepomuceno Church underwent a major renovation in 1995 which led to the San Juan Nepomuceno Church we see today.

san juan blog 105

Interestingly, beside the church is an old parish convent built in 1894 by Augustinian Recollects priest Celestino Yoldi. This extensive convent houses St. John Nepomuceno Museum where a collection of ancient church artifacts, altar utensils such as chalices, censer and boat, and candle sticks, and ecclesiastical vestments are on display.

7. CHECK OUT THE OLD SAN JUAN CHURCH RUINS

Why is it one of the top  attractions in San Juan Batangas?

San Juan, Batangas is oozing with history and many archaeological excavations have been conducted here.  The original town was a coastal village known as San Juan de Bocboc located in the present-day Brgy.Pinagbayanan .

8. FOOD TRIP IN SAN JUAN, BATANGAS

san juan batangas bonete

  • Bonete – Our favorite food in Batangas is none other than Bonete or Pan de Bonete. This hot bonnet shaped Pinoy style dinner roll is best eaten hot and can be dipped on hot tsokolate or kapeng barako. You can buy this in local bakeries downtown. We bought it from the bakery fronting Alps Bus Terminal in Poblacion San Juan, and it was so finger-licking good!

Loming Batangas

Loming Batangas at Lomihan sa Pulang Bato

  • Loming Batangas – Batangas is known for its mouth-watering noodle dish called Batangas Lomi. Its origin is traced to To Kim Eng, who is believed to have first served the lomi to his mahjong buddies back in 1968. Loming Batangas has thick, rich soup loaded with a variety of toppings such as egg, chicharon, fishball, belly strips, pork heart, liver, Chinese kikiam, etc. The best lomihan in San Juan is the Lomihan sa Pulang Bato .
  • Gotong Batangas – Batangas has its own version of goto, and it’s different from the typical goto (rice porridge) that we Pinoys are used to because it doesn’t use rice. Batangas goto originated in Lipa and is more like a soup dish.  It is composed of beef and cow innards such as beef tripe (honeycomb and blanket tripe), beef heart, bouillon, tendon, and intestines.

San Juan Batangas Things to Do: Food Trip

Gotong Batangas at Kuya Oliver’s Gotohan

  • In San Juan, we tried the Gotong Batangas overload at the Kuya Oliver’s Gotohan , a famous gotohan by Oliver Marasigan.  It was okay, since the beef was really boiled well, it was soft.  The soup is tasty, but I prefer thick soup. To complement the dish, they also provide kalamansi, deep fried garlic with chili. I haven’t tasted the Gotong Batangas in Lipa, so for a first timer, this is good for me, but nothing special.  But my cousins loved it for its price. You can also try Gotong Batangas at Marimar Restaurant. I was told they’re the original restaurant that serves this soup. See more details on the Where to Eat Section.

san juan blog 88

  • Champeni (Chempeni, sampeni, or sampeni)  – This is a Batangas dish composed of goat or beef innards. It tastes like kalderetang kambing and is usually eaten on pulutan or as a dish. We had it at Novicz Eatery along San Juan – Laiya Road.

Champeni / Chempeni ng Batangas

Champeni / Chempeni ng Batangas at Novicz Eatery

  • Batangas Seafood – San Juan, Batangas has one of the longest shorelines in the Philippines. The area from Brgy. Baraulte down to Brgy. Catmon are suitable for aquaculture. Hence, the abundance of seafood in town.
  • Everyone wants to eat a good seafood, and no one does seafood better in San Juan, Batangas than Four Corners Seafood and Sizzling Restaurant along San Juan – Laiya Road. See more details under Where to Eat Section below.

San Juan Food Trip: Seafood Fiesta

Seafood Fiesta at Four Corners Seafood and Sizzling Restaurant

  • Four Corners Seafood and Sizzling Restaurant seafood dishes are made from freshest products. They stand out because they don’t use preservatives. We ordered their bestseller – the Seafood Fiesta Dish , a mix of different kinds of seafood like crab, squid, fish, shrimps, and clams cooked in butter and secret spices from the Middle East and Israel, truly a feast fit for a queen! They’re tempting and enticing; you’ll surely drool just by looking at it! The sauce is thick and tremendously flavorsome, you’ll come out with a full stomach and grinning with pleasure.
  • Another personal favorite is their seafood hotpot boiling in a pot full of vegetables, fish, mussels, clams, and prawns. It’s a perfect comfort food and hangover food.
  • Cap off your seafood meal with their creamy and mouthwatering leche flan!

Suman Tamales Batangas

Suman tamales at Old San Juan Restaurant

  • Suman Tamales   –  Like a regular rice cake made of glutinous rice wrapped in banana leaf but with shredded chicken or meat, peanuts, and slices of boiled sliced egg or salted egg. We had this at Old San Juan Restaurant.

san juan batangas food trip : Ben Halo halo

Ben’s halo-halo

  • Halo Halo –  If you’re craving a rich, creamy halo-halo, after being soaked in the sun for hours, head to Ben’s Halo-Halo. This originated in Laguna, so it’s not actually a Batangas food.  I’m not a halo-halo fan, but this is good for me. Ben’s halo-halo uses shaved gelato ice, making it deliciously thick and creamy.  Needs a bit more toppings, but definitely one of the best I’ve tried!

9. MANGROVE TOUR IN SAN JUAN, BATANGAS

Why is it one of the top  things to do in San Juan Batangas?

san juan batangas mangroves

For a change of scenery, you can also go on Mangrove Tour in San, Juan Batangas .  You can rent an outrigger boat at Brgy.Poctol where you will be toured around a small mangrove river up to Tayabas Bay and return via Malaking Ilog River. The town is blessed with a sprawling mangroves area; reportedly, they have around 496 hectares of mangroves and swamp areas.  Most of these trees are predominantly finger type mangroves.

10. BIRD WATCHING IN SAN JUAN, BATANGAS

Lavished by natural resources San Juan, Batangas is an ideal location for bird watching .  The azure sea with rich marine life, lush forest, sprawling mangroves forest, swamp areas, and placid rivers, serves as habitats of endemic, migratory, and resident birds. I was able to see a common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) sitting on the wirelines of Laiya Adventure Park, as well as a blue-tailed bee eater.  Fellow travel blogger Ferdz Decena has a more in-depth blog on bird watching in San Juan. Read the link below.

SAN JUAN, BATANGAS ITINERARY (3 DAYS 2 NIGHTS)

If you’re visiting San Juan soon. Here’s a sample San Juan Batangas Itinerary for 3 days and 2 nights. Perfect for a long weekend trip. This is an itinerary based on the itinerary created for me by Solmera Coast Batangas, a DMCI Property who arranged and sponsored our trip to San Juan, Batangas recently.

SAN JUAN BATANGAS TIPS AND REMINDERS

  • Wear aqua shoes or sandals on beaches during the Laiya Island hopping tour as there are coral reef deposits that could hurt your feet.
  • As in most beaches, sea urchins are present in snorkeling sites, so wear aqua shoes or full-foot fins when snorkeling and please do not step on corals.
  • No fish feeding during snorkeling, please.
  • Bring a dry bag to protect your cameras and waterproof pouch for your phone. Or much better if you just bring an underwater camera or action camera for snorkeling and other water sports.
  • Bring refillable water bottle to keep yourself hydrated.
  • Almost everything is on cash basis here so stack up cash. There are ATMs in downtown San Juan and at 7Eleven.
  • San Juan, Batangas is tourist-friendly and generally safe for visitors. But as in all places, do not leave your things unattended during island hopping tour. Double check your things to make sure you are not leaving anything behind. I left my shades and Tommy Jeans sandals. I got the shades back from Lamesang Bato 1st stop because the locals manning the island took care of it, but the sandals I left at the 2nd stop Lamesang Bato, was already gone. Another tourist from the boat that arrived after we left  may have picked it up according to the locals manning the beach.
  • Practice the LNT Principle. Leave no trace. Dispose your trash properly. Do Not collect sands and shells.

12 BATANGAS TOURIST SPOTS You Can Easily Visit from Manila

12 BATANGAS TOURIST SPOTS You Can Easily Visit from Manila

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

Batangas is a blessed land. It also cradles a wide array of diverse landscapes — pristine beaches, a scenic lake, spectacular diving sites, breathtaking rivers, fertile farm lands, enchanting mountains, and a volcano. These places have also nurtured communities from the pre-Spanish settlements to the rise of the province’s many urban centers in its long history. Thus, it is no surprise that Batangas has a rich culture and heritage, and has become home to some of the country’s most significant national heroes whose roles and legacy cannot be stressed enough.

The best part: It is close to Manila, just two to three hours away. Here are 12 destinations you might want to check out the next time you plan a quick getaway!

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

Taal Volcano

UPDATE: The Taal Volcano has been closed to the public.

If you love admiring it from Tagaytay, you’re gonna love it even more when you’re actually on the volcano. Rising in the middle of Taal lake, Taal Volcano is often called an island within a lake within an island. But wait, there’s more. It has a crater lake and at its center is a small rock islet, which makes it an islet within a lake within an island within a lake within an island. Let me explain that in great detail here: Taal Volcano Crater .

Taal is one of the smallest active volcanoes in the world. Yes, it is little but, mind you, it is very, very active. In fact, it is one of the few “Decade Volcanoes” in the world. According to Science Daily, Decade Volcanoes are 16 volcanoes identified by the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI) as being worthy of particular study in light of their history of large, destructive eruptions and proximity to populated areas.

tourist spots near batangas

It only takes two to three hours to get to the jump off point in Talisay, Batangas. From there, you can rent a small boat to take you to the volcano island.

If you have more time : Make a stop at Apolinario Mabini Shrine in Brgy. Talaga, Tanauan City. You’ll pass by this memorial, where the hero was born, on your way back to Manila (via Tanauan).

Where to stay : While there are accommodations in Talisay (the town nearest the volcano), most prefer to stay in Tagaytay. Check out rates and discounts here: Hotels Near Taal Volcano

Taal Heritage Town

Basilica de San Martin de Tours, or simply Taal Basilica, is Asia's largest Catholic church.

Then the capital of Batangas, the town of Taal used to be located in present day San Nicolas but was forced to move to a higher elevation. No thanks to Taal Volcano, which destroyed it during the 200-day eruption in 1754, the biggest ever recorded for Taal.

The town picked itself up and prospered in a new location during the Spanish era and produced some of the country’s bravest national heroes including Doña Gliceria Marella de Villavicencio, known as the Godmother of the Revolution and a major supporter of the revolt against the Spanish forces; Don Felipe Agoncillo, a revolutionary hero and a diplomat; his wife Doña Marcela Marino Agoncillo, best known for making the Philippine Flag; and Gen. Ananias Diokno, the only Tagalog general to have headed an all-out military expedition to the Visayas. Their well-preserved ancestral houses remain standing up to this date and offer a glimpse of the lifestyle of the rich and famous at the time.

The town’s centerpiece, however, is the Basilica de San Martin de Tours, crested on a hill. Taal Basilica, as it is more commonly referred to, is the biggest Catholic Church in Asia.

If you have more time : Learn the art of making balisong and burdang Taal (handmade embroidery). Taal is also known for the Barong Tagalog.

Church of the Immaculate Conception (Balayan Church)

Another heritage town and former capital is Balayan . Its history can be traced back to the early 13th century. They say that way before the Spaniards came, Balayan was already a booming settlement and a busy trade center.

This long history makes Balayan a town rich in culture and heritage. The town is dotted with a number of ancestral houses that offer a peek at the past. At the center of the poblacion stands the Church of the Immaculate Conception, one of the oldest churches in Batangas and in the Southern Tagalog region (if not the oldest). The construction of the church was started in 1749 and was completed in 1759. Balayan celebrates the Feast of St. John the Baptist (San Juan de Bautista) every June 24th in a wet and wild way. The Parada ng Lechon happens on this day and visitors are invited to participate in the celebration!

The perfectly arranged pews and the gorgeous dome of the Lipa Cathedral

Lipa is bustling, but it doesn’t take much effort to see that at its core is an old Batangan city that treasures its heritage. Most of the attractions here fall under three categories: churches, historical sites, and food. The Metropolitan Cathedral of San Sebastian is among the most visited for its grand design. Casa de Segunda epitomizes a well-preserved Spanish colonial ancestral house. Don’t leave the city without digging into a bowl of sticky Batangas lomi and goto, and a sip of Kapeng Barako.

Where to stay: Lipa City Hotels

Expect Caleruega to be crowded during the Holy Week. This small chapel perched on a hill is a favorite Visita Iglesia stop among locals and tourists alike. Its proximity to Tagaytay is also a factor to its popularity. But Nasugbu’s biggest draw remains its shores. Aside from Punta Fuego, another summer destination worth a visit is Fortune Island, Fortune Island, a small rocky island surrounded by shipwreck diving sites including the Dutch warship Mauritius, which sank on December 14, 1600.

For mountaineers, Nasugbu has Mt. Batulao to offer.

Laiya, San Juan

Laiya in San Juan, Batangas. Photo by Winston Almendras

Long and wide, the coast of Brgy. Laiya Aplaya is sparkling with white powdery sand. More popularly called as Laiya, it has risen as a major beach destination in Batangas. Resorts and hotels, from budget to high-end, have lined the beach, making it one of the go-to destinations for weekend escapades and even corporate events.

Where to stay: Hotels near Laiya Beach

Anilao, Mabini

Beach near the port in Anilao

A barangay of Mabini, Anilao is tucked in the northern coast of Calumpang peninsula. It is regarded by many as the birthplace of scuba diving in the Philippines. The hidden wonders it keeps in its depths are no longer secret, but they continue to amaze curious souls.

Also in Anilao is Gulugod Baboy, an easy climb (perfect for casual trekkers) with breathtaking views of Balayan Bay!

Where to stay: Anilao Hotels

Masasa Beach

Tingloy is the only Batangan municipality that is mostly not on the main island of Luzon. Its main island is Maricaban, a fish-shaped island off the tip of the peninsula and in between the two major bays. Its most popular destination is Sombrero Island, which many mistakenly assume to be part of Anilao because island hopping tours begin there. Masasa Beach is also catching the attention of more sun worshippers lately.

Where to stay: There are homestays and small inns in Tingloy, but many choose to stay in Anilao instead. Check out rates and discounts: Anilao Hotels

Verde Island, Batangas City

Verde Island is part of Batangas City, but it is in no way as commercialized as the rest. Situated 45 minutes off the mainland, it cradles a number of beach attractions that are almost untouched including Mahabang Buhangin and Cueva Sitio.

The island also sits in the middle of Verde Island Passage, which is described by a 2007 Smithsonian Institute study as the “center of the center” of the world’s marine biodiversity citing the high concentration of marine species.

Malabrigo, Lobo

Malabrigo Beach and Lighthouse

Batangas has two lighthouses manning its coasts. One of them stands proudly at Malabrigo Point in the sleepy town of Lobo. Victorian-inspired, the Malabrigo Lighthouse was designed by Guillermo Brockman in 1891 and was constructed by Chinese contractor Jose Garcia in 1896. The Victorian-inspired structure is cylindrical, made of bricks, and has a metal staircase. It was declared as a National Historical Landmark on 27 November 2006. The lighthouse overlooks a stunning pebble beach! Not very far is a submarine garden, whose shallow waters harbor live corals and fishes for your snorkeling pleasure.

Calatagan and Lian

The top of the lighthouse

The other Batangan lighthouse mans Cape Santiago in equally sedating town of Calatagan. The Cape Santiago Lighthouse stands on top of a cliff by the shore. Built in 1890, it is one of the oldest lighthouses in the Philippines that continue to function. The construction began on December 15, 1890, led by Engineer Magin Pers y Pers, and was completed by Guillermo Brockman. It is a dominant structure in the area — an imposing 51-ft tall white and red brick tower amidst the verdant paradise.

Burot Beach, a secluded stretch of white sand, is also a great place for quiet beach bumming. Calatagan is also famous for its many dive sites.

In Lian, there’s Matabungkay. If locals are to be believed, Matabungkay was “rediscovered” in the early 1950s by Germans who were looking for a go-to paradise within proximity to the bustling Manila. Since then, Matabungkay transformed from a simple fishing village into a tourism destination. The shore is strewn with ashen sand that sparkles a white glow when hugged by sunlight. It is bordered landward by a long, cramped lane of resorts and stores. Beware though, the last time I was here, I could not help but notice the trash littered on the beach.

Where to stay: Calatagan Hotels

Mt. Maculot, Cuenca

tourist spots near batangas

The old town of Cuenca has its own charm, but it is the commanding mountain next to it that most tourists visit it for. According to Pinoy Mountaineer , “At 930 MASL, the mountain (Maculot) has three destinations: the famous Rockies (706m), the summit (930m) and the Grotto (510m). These can all be covered by a traverse dayhike, but most climbers head to the Rockies, which is the reason why Maculot is the paragon of an easy hike.”

Is there a straight way going to Calatagan? Or do you have any suggestions how can I go there without trafic?

G-Zoom

three ways to Calatagan from Manila…. 1. via Tagaytay, shortest route but go off-hours to avoid the crazy weekend/holiday traffic 2. via Star Tollway, Lipa, Cuenca, Taal, Balayan, longest route but some cool stuff along the way. 3. via Kaybiang Tunnel, Manila, Cavite, Virac, Tunnel, Nasugbu… Scenic but not much on the way.

Got to Chez Deo in Balayan for the best Italian food (and wood fired brick oven pizza) in Batangas

If you’re one of those people who fancy castles and gowns and have an eye for fantasy-related stuff, then Fantasy World located in Lemery, Batangas is for you!

This place is said to be an abandoned-themed park. The owner envisioned this land as a “Disneyland of the Philippines”, but because of high-production costs, the owner couldn’t reach the needed funds and left the place as it was today. A sad story to talk about, but Fantasy World as an abandoned themed park was one of the reasons why many tourists are flocking to visit the place. The curiosity it brings and the unique structure of the land will surely catch your attention. Because of this, many local movies had their shooting in this location, one of them is the Philippine blockbuster movie of Vice Ganda entitled Fantastica.

If you’re planning to pay a visit or do your wedding or debut photoshoot here, be sure to have an inquiry first. They have a different rate for that.

This is a family heritage of the Mendoza clan in Batangas. A house that preserved different kinds of antic collections and artifacts.

The said house was built around a hundred years ago. It becomes an evacuation area during the rainy season and the ground floor of the house serves as an elementary classroom for young Filipino back in the day. One of the hidden gems of Batangas is Masasa Beach. It is located at Tingloy, the island of Batangas that is said to separate Balayan Bay from Batangas Bay. There are transient houses around that you can book. They also offer different kinds of activities such as island hopping and trekking at the Magasawang Bato. But one of the famous activities to enjoy in this place is snorkeling. Many locals and even tourists love snorkeling in Masasa Beach because it is located in the vicinity of Verde Passage which is one of the richest marine biodiversity in the Philippines. One of the things that you should experience when you visit Batangas is hiking at Mount Manabu located at Santo Tomas. The word “Manabu” is a wordplay for Mataas Na Bundok that is once called “Pagligawan“ which means a place to get lost.

Many climbers and mount hikers recommend this mountain for beginners. So if you want to try hiking and mount climbing you can experience it for the first time here at Mt. Manabu. They say that it is easier to climb than other mountains and has a lot of stations where you can rest and eat. Fortune Island

An island in Nasugbu, Batangas is one of the hidden gems that is waiting to be discovered.

But over time, the owner find it difficult to maintain and balance all the expenses and decided to cease its operation around 2016. Today, this island is one of the tourist attractions in Batangas.

To get there, you need to rent a boat at the Fortune Resort heading to Fortune island. Riding the boat is already thrilling as the waves are strong at times. On the island itself, you can do water sports activities such as snorkeling and diving. You can also do some trekking and sightseeing at the peak of the hill.
