How to do La Romana (beyond the resort!)

Casa de Campo Marina, La Romana

Most tourists who visit La Romana don’t venture beyond the resort, cruise terminal and golf courses. Here’s what they’re missing.

On the south-east coast, an hour and a half drive from Santo Domingo, La Romana is a growing city popular with European travelers but still relatively obscure to the American crowd.

Most of the tourists who come to La Romana every year don’t venture beyond the cruise terminals, Casa de Campo resort or the ocean-view golf courses. But if you’re a traveller, not a tourist, there’s plenty of great reasons to spend a day or a week exploring La Romana’s world-class beaches, snorkelling, scuba diving and the two incredible nature reserves nearby.

Despite the imposing presence of the megaresort that put this destination on the map, La Romana as a whole is less overtaken by the tourist industry than Punta Cana or Puerto Plata , making it a good choice if you’re looking for a destination that combines authentic Caribbean seaside city with plenty of amenities and guided activities on your doorstep.

Need to know

Casa de Campo is a private 7000-acre megaresort complex of luxury rooms, villas, exclusive beachfronts, yacht moorings, three golf courses (including the #1 ranked course in the Caribbean), seven restaurants and, topping it all off, Altos de Chavon, a fantastical recreation of a 16th-century European village, perched atop a plateau overlooking the mighty Chavon river gorge.

Altos de Chavon has been called “the country’s leading attraction” by Frommer's travel guidebook. This dramatic village is indisputably impressive and exceedingly photogenic, but it is nonetheless a re-creation, and the secure, gated nature of Casa de Campo means it’s great for high-profile concerts and photography shoots, but you’re certainly not wandering through a living-and-breathing Dominican town in any real sense.

Beyond the resorts

The American sugar barons who planted the Casa de Campo resort didn’t create their tropical paradise out of thin air. This part of the Hispaniolan coast is as breathtaking as any other, with a generous smattering of the fine white sand beaches that the island is famous for and miles and miles of warm Caribbean ocean fit for swimming all year round.

La Romana is a beloved base for scuba and snorkelling enthusiasts, with most of the underwater action launching from nearby Bayahibe. La Romana is also a great place to wake up before setting sail on a day trip to one of two nature reserves, Catalina Island and Cotubanamá National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with hiking paths carving through dense forest alongside caves with pre-colonial Taino petroglyphs.

Also known as the National Park of the East (Parque Nacional Del Este), the Cotubanamá National Park is popular with tourists for its white-sand beaches, shallow ultramarine surf, stunning coral formations, glittering caves that hide subterranean lagoons and Taino petroglyphs -plus the chance to swim with dolphins at some of the best scuba-diving destinations in the DR. A trip around the coast of the park to Isla Saona is considered the #1 boat trip in the Dominican Republic.

Catalina Island

Catalina Island is a tiny tropical island, less than four square miles in total, formed on top of a coral reef, just a short boat trip south of La Romana. The island’s diverse wildlife and bright coral reefs incredibly close to the seashore attract visitors who come to sunbathe, swim, and especially to snorkel. Dive sites including the Aquarium and the Wall boast an impressive array of tropical fish including damselfish, sergeant major fish, squirrelfish and stingrays.

Getting there is easy, with a dozen different tour companies offering full-day trips from La Romana to Catalina Island starting at around USD $70. A compelling alternative to Isla Saona if that trip is looking too busy or too far for your personal itinerary.

Watch a Dominican Baseball Game

Baseball is the national sport of the Dominican Republic, and La Romana is the home of the Los Toros del Este baseball team. If you’re visiting during baseball season, which runs from October to January, you can join local crowds cheering on their home team at Francisco Micheli Stadium.

Read more about Dominican baseball.

Sunbathe and swim at these alternative beaches

Minitas Beach is for resort guests only, while Bayahibe is one of the top-ranked beaches in the Caribbean and can be busy in the peak season . For a more private piece of paradise, visit Playa Caleta in La Romana or Playa Dominicus, just south of Bayahibe. Playa Caleta is a rocky beach, so bring water shoes if you have them, but the view south to Catalina Island is stunning. Playa Dominicus is a gorgeous soft white sand beach fringed with palm trees, and plenty of beachside bars to throw back some beers.

Cañaveral Food Park, La Romana

The best (alternative) place to eat in La Romana

The Cañaveral Food Park is a great spot for food truck fare, fast becoming popular across the DR for locals and travelers alike and often serving up delicious flavours that rival the mainstream restaurants. We recommend: the baked lamb empanadas at the Uzbesk Food Truck.

Getting There

Flying into La Romana International Airport (LRM) is the most direct route to La Romana, but connects mostly to European ports. Most North Americans traveling to La Romana arrive via Santo Domingo, the country’s capital city and central transportation hub.

You can reach Santo Domingo by the Las Américas International Airport (SDQ), by sea ferry from Puerto Rico, and by bus from neighbouring Haiti . Minibuses travel regularly from Santo Domingo to La Romana, and you can always hire a taxi.

From Punta Cana , the new Autopista Del Coral road will get you to La Romana in around 45 minutes.

Getting to La Romana

La Romana is located in the southeastern region of the Dominican Republic. It is a well-known cruise port in the Caribbean and an all-inclusive paradise for families and adults—but did you know it’s also an exclusive retreat for celebrities? That itself should tell you that La Romana is a beautiful destination!

Cruise visitors – If you are coming from the port of La Romana and do not have a booked excursion, you can easily find licensed taxis or public buses at the cruise terminal to get you to the public beaches.

Getting to La Romana by Plane

When it comes to airports, you have a variety of options to choose from to get to La Romana. Two are between 55 to 75 minutes away, while one is a mere 20 minutes from the beach. The best airport for you will depend on your location and budget, giving you the power to tailor your travel plans to your needs.

The most popular and leading airport in the Dominican Republic is Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). Many tourists travel to PUJ as it is usually the most budget-friendly and conveniently located airport to several Dominican Republic destinations. It takes about 55 minutes to travel by car from PUJ to La Romana.

A long pool overlooking the runway at Punta Cana International Airport.

Traveling tip: If you have the Priority Pass, you will LOVE the lounge at PUJ. It has a pool overlooking the runway. So bring your swimsuit!

Another great option is Las Américas International Airport (SDQ) in Santo Domingo. It is about 1 hour and 15 minutes by car from SDQ to La Romana.

Ideally, the best airport to fly into is La Romana Casa De Campo International Airport (LRM). As a beloved destination for Europeans, many airlines have nonstop flights to the small airport, making it a great option for many European countries.

Atlanta, Miami, and New York also have nonstop flights to La Romana. If you can fly into La Romana airport, you will save at least an hour of driving from Punta Cana or Santo Domingo. Within 20 minutes, you could be putting your feet into the sand.

The Best Things to Do in La Romana

La Romana is a tropical destination that has it all. You can explore Cotubanamá National Park by trekking through the jungle, swimming in a cenote, sailing on a luxurious catamaran to serene islands, and diving into colorful coral reefs.

Go on a wild adventure zip-lining through the jungle, getting muddy on a buggy, visiting a plantation, and feeding cute monkeys. You can also embrace the culture, visit the iconic Altos de Chavón village, learn how to make cigars, and more.

So whether you are here for a stopover at the port of La Romana or staying at an all-inclusive resort, here are the best things to do in La Romana.

Explore Cotubanamá National Park

A treeline of palm trees along a turquoise coast on Cotubanamá National Park.

Cotubanamá National Park is one of the most beautiful protected areas of the Dominican Republic. It spans across a vast region of a lush jungle, mangroves, and two tranquil islands. It is also home to more than 500 flora species, 300 types of birds, and a rich underwater marine life.

The best way to visit Cotubanamá National Park is by booking an excursion to hike through the jungle, snorkel at Catalina Island, and enjoy a boat tour to Saona Island.

Relax on Catalina Island

Catalina Island is a gorgeous, uninhabited island in Cotubanamá National Park. You can relax on white-sand beaches or put on snorkel gear and explore an underwater oasis teeming with marine life, coral reefs, and a shipwreck.

For those seeking an exhilarating snorkeling experience, Catalina Island is a must-visit. The highlight is ‘The Wall,’ a renowned reef that is the pinnacle of excitement for snorkelers.

After exploring Catalina Island’s underwater haven, dry off in the sun with your feet in powdery white sand. Then, enjoy a traditional Dominican lunch buffet and purchase a souvenir at the small artisan shops.

Take an Epic Boat Tour to Saona Island

A leaning palm tree on a remote beach on Saona Island.

Saona Island is one of the most popular and best things to do in La Romana. The water surrounding Saona Island is some of the prettiest water you will ever see. Its crystal clear turquoise blue water and white sand beaches with leaning palm trees are a screensaver picturesque destination that will leave you breathless.

You can enjoy Soana Island in two ways: on a party boat or an eco-friendly experience. The latter is a full-day excursion that takes you on an epic journey to many beautiful places.

You snorkel in a lagoon filled with giant starfish, soak up the sun and play in the sand at multiple remote beaches, enjoy a traditional Dominican lunch at the local fishing village of Mano Juan, visit a turtle sanctuary, and explore a lush mangrove to find spotted eagle rays and turtles.

Book a small group eco-friendly tour to Saona Island

Swim Inside Cueva Padre Nuestro’s Cenote

Take a short trek through Cotubanamá National Park and discover Cueva Padre Nuestro, a cenote inside the bottom of a cave. As you journey through the jungle, you will encounter beautiful fauna and flora and learn about the Taino Indians who once inhabited the jungle and their way of life.

At the end of the trail, you will reach Chicho’s cave, which has several petroglyphs. Then, you will venture deeper into the cave to find bats, stalagmites, stalactites, and a beautiful, crystal-clear swimming hole. Grab your gear and enjoy snorkeling in the refreshing water.

Feed Cute Squirrel Monkeys and Visit a Plantation

A squirrel monkey sitting on a tree limb at Monkeyland in La Romana.

Monkeyland is one of the best things to do in La Romana. A short one-hour drive away, this half-day excursion is fun for all ages.

Monkeyland is in the heart of the Dominican countryside, surrounded by a mountainous jungle. The first part of the excursion is the plantation tour.

It includes a quick walk through local houses and an open-air sitting area that overlooks the plantation and jungle. The tour includes several demonstrations, during which you learn how coconut oil is extracted and how coffee and chocolate start from a bean and end up in your cup.

In addition to trying your hand at grinding roasted coffee beans and chocolate, you will also get to taste it. Guests will receive samples of hot chocolate, black coffee, and the famous Mama Juana!

A mom with three monkeys climbing on her while holding her son at Monkeyland in La Romana.

Then, you get to walk next door to Monkeyland, a five-acre natural habitat for over 30 cute squirrel monkeys. You will have several opportunities to feed and observe the playful monkeys. It is a really fun experience for any animal lover, but be warned—they are cheeky and will climb all over you!

The guides do a great job of ensuring an unforgettable experience and capturing every moment. In addition to the professional cameraman, the guide also helps take plenty of pictures with your phones and cameras. At the end of the tour, you can purchase all the pictures as a perfect Monkeyland souvenir.

Learn How to Make Cigars

A mold of cigars from the VegaFina factory - one of the best things to do in La Romana.

Whether you enjoy the luxury of a cigar or not, visiting a cigar factory tour is one of the best things to do in La Romana. The tour is very informative for cigar lovers or even non-smokers like me. I was blown away by the process and dedication of making a cigar.

Since cigars are the Dominican Republic’s largest export, La Romana has many cigar factories. One of the best cigar factories to tour is VegaFina.

At the  VegaFina cigar factory tour , you watch the last few steps of hand-rolling a premium cigar. It’s enjoyable to watch and a unique experience. At the end of the tour, you can purchase some of the Dominican Republic’s finest cigars at a duty-free price.

Visit Altos de Chavón

St. Stanislaus Church at Altos de Chavon - a Mediterranean-inspired village in La Romana.

Transport yourself to another part of the world at Altos de Chavón, a 16th-century Mediterranean-inspired village built entirely of stone and corrals from the Dominican Republic’s coastlines.

The village has a 5,000-seat Grecian-style amphitheater, an archeological museum, local shops, restaurants, and a cultural center. It is also home to the gorgeous St. Stanislaus Church and the renowned Altos de Chavón School of Design.

Residents, visitors, and artists from around the world come to explore, enjoy, and study Altos de Chavón’s significant design. Walking the cobblestone streets and admiring the incredible architecture is easily one of the best things to do in La Romana.

Enjoy a River Cruise on Chavón River

The Chavon River makes a bend between the lush jungle.

Did you know that the Chavón River was a filming location for famous movies such as  Jurassic Park ,  Apocalypse Now ,  Rambo First Blood Part II , and  Rambo II ? Embark on a river cruise down the Chavón River and see why it’s one of the most beautiful rivers and filming locations in the Caribbean.

Enjoy a scenic cruise along the Chavón River through its gorge, surrounded by a rich tropical jungle. Most tour companies combine a cruise down the Chavón River with Catalina Island or Altos de Chavón.

Or truly immerse yourself in the jungle with  Seavis . This tour will take you further into the gorge until you reach a riverside farm. At the farm, you will learn about the Taino lifestyle, enjoy a traditional Dominican “barbacoa,” kayak down a side river, hike a fruit trail, and even relax in a jacuzzi or hammock high above the river!

Go on Snorkel or Scuba Dive Trip

One of the best things to do in La Romana is to discover its underwater world of vibrant coral reefs, marine life, and ancient artifacts. Hop on a boat and charter out to some of the best snorkel areas in the Caribbean Sea, such as “The Wall” near Catalina Island.

You can also earn your PADI course and explore 16th-century shipwrecks and artifacts. Pirate enthusiasts will enjoy diving to the underwater Living Museums in the Sea, which boasts remnants of shipwrecks dating back to the Golden Age of Piracy.

I always say the best way to immerse yourself in a culture is through food and drink. So enjoy tropical cocktails in La Romana!

The Mama Juana is a traditional Dominican Republic you cannot miss. It can be found on the beach, at resorts, restaurants, and bars. We enjoyed our Mama Juana on our Monkeyland tour.

I enjoy two more cocktails in La Romana: the Dirty Monkey Frozen Cocktail and Coco Loco. Both drinks incorporate coconuts, which are widely used around the island.

Play at the #1 Golf Course in the Caribbean

La Romana is a great destination for golf enthusiasts. It is home to six world-class golf courses, including a PGA course and the number one golf course in the Caribbean.

Playing a round of golf on Pete Dye’s prestigious 18-hole course at the Teeth of the Dog is the best thing to do in La Romana for any golfer. The course is set alongside the coral coastline of the Dominican Republic and offers panoramic views of the turquoise ocean.

Relax on White Sand Beaches

travel to la romana dominican republic

Of course, one of the best things to do in La Romana is to hit the beach! The Dominican Republic has beautiful beaches, but some of the best powder-soft, white beaches are in La Romana and its surrounding area.

Minitas Beach  at Casa de Campo is a picture-perfect beach with calm, crystal-clear turquoise blue water. The beach is open to Casa de Campo residents and non-hotel guests for a fee.

You can relax on loungers underneath umbrellas or enjoy watersports like kayaking and paddle boating. Minitas Beach also has a roped-off area, which makes it family-friendly and safe for swimming.

Bayahibe Beach  is one of the most popular public beaches in La Romana. Thus, it can get very crowded with cruise visitors and tourists departing or arriving from island excursions.

It is near the Bayahibe fishing village. So you can easily walk to restaurants and enjoy a scenic beach picnic on the soft sand.

Dominicus Beach  is a gorgeous beach with its famous black-and-white painted lighthouse-shaped bar. Grab a cocktail from this iconic landmark and enjoy the warm turquoise water with a cold drink in hand.

Dominicus Beach is also known as the first beach in the Caribbean to receive the Blue Flag certification. It strives for high sustainability standards, quality, safety, and environmental education. Thanks to its calm, shallow waters, it is one of the safest beaches.

Stay or Play at Casa de Campo

Casa de Campo is one of the world’s most exclusive and luxurious resort communities. Celebrities like Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Rihanna, the Kardashians, Michael Jordan, and former U.S. Presidents are frequently seen relaxing, playing golf, or throwing A-list parties. The property has also been seen in popular TV shows like the final two episodes of the 10th season of The Bachelorette.

If you want a glimpse of the rich and famous lifestyle, this is it! Non-hotel guests can access the property and participate in its on-site activities for a small fee. You can play golf on world-class courses, relax on the beach, ride horseback, indulge in spa amenities, and more.

Some popular all-inclusive resorts in La Romana include Hilton La Romana , Bahia Principe Grand La Romana , Dreams Dominicus La Romana , Viva Dominicus Beach by Wyndham , Iberostar Selection Hacienda Dominicus , and Casa de Campo .

Our favorite place to stay in La Romana is the Hilton La Romana All-Inclusive . It is a family-friendly and adults-only resort. As a young family, it’s the perfect resort for us.

Hilton La Romana has an epic water park with some of the best water slides I’ve ever experienced, a beautiful lazy river, and a kid’s aquatic playground. The water park alone is enough reason to stay here.

The area along the coast is mostly taken up with various resorts, most notably Casa De Campo Resort. Cruise ships also port here.

Other alternatives are:

  • Punta Cana Intl Airport ( PUJ   IATA )
  • Las Americas International Airport, Santo Domingo ( SDQ   IATA )

A very popular way of getting around the town is through riding motor bikes as well as gua guas. Gua Guas is another name for buses. The motor bikes are easily accessible due to the fact that the people who ride them are always out like taxis. The catch here is that the bikers will demand a high price at first for the distances you are going. Different people ask different prices. You have to be smart and not always accept the first price these people give you. Bargain with them and try to make the prices go lower. Chances are that they wouldn't want you to go to someone else. Be patient and you will pay the price that is appropriate for the distance you are going. Another thing, when you come upon a bike, make sure to eye the rider. Sometimes these people aren't experienced enough to drive around especially when they drive up to four people at a time. There is no such thing as accident insurance when riding these bikes. If you are involved in an accident, it's on you to pay for hospital bills or whatever bills you would have to pay for. It's pretty much riding at your own risk. Remember these riders are locals trying to make extra cash by giving people rides. The railroad system is pretty much out the question. They are mostly used to carry goods across the Dominican Republic. The buses are the cheapest way to go! Moto conchos aka bikes prices depend on the person and are less safe. Depending on your taste and needs, make sure you are ready to take one of these rides.

The local cigar factory is also interesting to visit.

La Romana has plenty to offer. On certain nights, resorts and locals host parties, activities, and games on the beaches. Everyone is welcome because they consider that having more people makes everything more fun. When you're done at the beach, head over into town and enjoy a night of festivities. The locals always have fun events going on depending the time of the year.

Big Sur is a very popular club, in the Bayahibe area that has merengue dancing and excellent food.

During the day, you can snorkel, dive, golf, swim or go to a spa.

The most you can possibly do is go down to the markets and buy cultural clothing and merchandise. Many people have and sell the same things so make sure to look around first before buying something, because maybe you can get a better deal. For those of you who have decided to stay in an eat yourself motel or hotel, the market is the way to go. Here they have a variety of foods in which one can chose from. From fruits, to vegetables, to drinks, and finally spices. You can enjoy a home cooked meal at a low price. As always make sure to bargain with the merchants in order to receive a lower cost on the foods. Aside from the food market you can hit up the craft shops, and sports shops. Many of these places offer food within the building so make sure to look around. The rest is up to you. When you know where you're staying research your area although most areas have similar shops and activities going.

Eating in a place like La Romana is quite easy and numerous in quantity. From the resort food, to the local restaurants and bars, to the markets, and finally the vendors walking around. Whatever you decide to do, make sure you know what you're eating in case of allergies. The resort food is your typical meals with a bit of a Dominican twist in some foods. If you want to be very adventurous, feel free to buy food off the street markets, because the food is homemade and absolutely delicious. Many restaurants take out main ingredients in some of the foods in order to keep regulations intact. This might not give you the full experience of what real Dominican foods taste like. However, this does not apply to all restaurants. Calamaris Fritos (fried calamari) is a very popular dish that many tourist enjoy when they visit La Romana. The food here ranges, so in order for you to find the right ones, make sure to do a bit of research to find the hotspots for certain types of foods.

The drinks here are as expected. You have your water, juice, soda, and finally beer. If you want to hardcore drink and have a good time with family and friends, there are many bars around the area which serve both beer and liquor. Also, a very popular way of drinking is of the streets. The vendors you see might have stands set up with different juices they have made from papaya, to a myriad number of different fruits. On the beach they have vendors walking by selling drinks, and as i mentioned in previous sections, make sure you don't accept their prices right away. Bargain with them to lower the costs. Remember, the vendors want money and will take just about anything that is not too low.

Driving in to La Romana from Punta Cana can be a long trip, having to take a bus through the dirt roads. If driving, there can be times of bad weather which make it that much more difficult and dangerous. The roads on the way to La Romana have giant potholes which could easily sink your vehicle. If raining, the roads are usually washed away and makes drivers turn back around or even get caught in the mist of it. Whatever you chose either way, be careful and definitely be prepared!

Punta Cana Is Great, But Here's Why It’s Time You Visit La Romana

La Romana, a charming city on the Dominican Republic's southeast coast, remains a hidden gem for many American travelers.

Rafael Peña • Oct 30, 2023

man splashing in water in La Romana Domincan Republic

La Romana, a charming city on the Dominican Republic’s southeast coast, remains a less visited destination for many American travelers. While it has gained popularity among European visitors, La Romana retains its allure as an authentic Caribbean seaside city with a mix of cultural amenities and guided activities, all against the backdrop of breathtaking natural beauty.

Casa de Campo: A Megaresort Oasis

travel to la romana dominican republic

At the heart of La Romana is Casa de Campo, a sprawling 7,000-acre megaresort known for its luxurious accommodations. The resort also features an exclusive beachfront, yacht moorings, and world-class golf courses, including the Caribbean’s top-ranked course. Crowning it all is Altos de Chavon, a recreated 16th-century European village perched atop a plateau overlooking the Chavon River. Although photogenic, it’s important to note that Altos de Chavon is for recreation rather than a living Dominican town.

Exploring Pristine Beaches and Waters

beach in La Romana

La Romana boasts white sand beaches and warm Caribbean waters, making it an excellent base for scuba and snorkeling enthusiasts. The nearby town of Bayahibe is a launch point for most underwater adventures. La Romana is also your gateway to two incredible nature reserves—Catalina Island and Cotubanamá National Park.

Cotubanamá National Park: A Natural Paradise

Cotubanamá National Park is celebrated for its white-sand beaches and underground caves with hidden lagoons. The national park features Taino petroglyphs and the opportunity to swim with dolphins, making it a popular scuba-diving destination. A boat trip around the park’s coast to Isla Saona is regarded as the Dominican Republic’s most popular boat trip.

Catalina Island: A Coral Paradise

Catalina Island, located just south of La Romana, is a tiny tropical gem perched on a coral reef. Its diverse wildlife and vibrant coral reefs near shore attract sun-seekers and snorkelers. Dive sites like the Aquarium and the Wall showcase an array of tropical fish, making it a snorkeler’s paradise. Numerous tour companies offer day trips from La Romana to Catalina Island, starting at around $70.

Immerse Yourself in Dominican Baseball

travel to la romana dominican republic

Baseball enthusiasts will find a home in La Romana, the local baseball team, as it’s the home of Los Toros del Este. If you’re visiting during baseball season, from October to January, join the passionate local crowd cheering on their home team at Francisco Micheli Stadium.

Unwind on Exquisite Beaches

While Minitas Beach is reserved for resort guests, Bayahibe, one of the Caribbean’s top-ranked beaches, can get crowded during peak seasons. For a more tranquil beach experience, explore Playa Caleta in La Romana, a rocky beach with stellar views of Catalina Island. Alternatively, visit Playa Dominicus, located just south of Bayahibe, offering soft white sand, palm-fringed shores, and plenty of beachside bars to savor some Caribbean charm.

Dining at Cañaveral Food Park

Regarding dining, venture over to Cañaveral Food Park, a hub for food truck fare gaining popularity across the Dominican Republic. Vendors in the food park offer flavors that rival mainstream restaurants. Don’t miss the baked lamb empanadas at the Uzbesk Food Truck.

Getting There: Your Journey to La Romana

travel to la romana dominican republic

La Romana International Airport (LRM) offers the most direct route to the city, primarily connecting to European destinations. Most North American travelers reach La Romana via Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic’s capital city and central transportation hub. You can access Santo Domingo through Las Américas International Airport (SDQ), sea ferries from Puerto Rico, or buses from neighboring Haiti. Minibusses operate regularly between Santo Domingo and La Romana, although hiring a taxi is always an option. For those coming from Punta Cana, the new Autopista Del Coral road shortens the journey to La Romana to approximately 45 minutes.

Embrace La Romana’s hidden treasures, explore its stunning natural wonders, and bask in the rich tapestry of Dominican culture for a memorable Caribbean escape.

Things to Do in La Romana

114km (71 miles) E of Santo Domingo, 37km (23 miles) E of San Pedro de Macoris

On the southeast coast of the Dominican Republic, La Romana was once a sleepy sugar-cane town that specialized in cattle raising. Visitors didn't come near the place, but when Gulf + Western Inc. opened a luxurious tropical paradise resort, the Casa de Campo, about 1.5km (1 mile) east of town, La Romana soon began drawing the jet set. It's the finest resort in the Dominican Republic, and especially popular among golfers.

Just east of Casa de Campo is Altos de Chavón, a charming and whimsical copy of what might have been a fortified medieval village in Spain, southern France, or Italy. It's the country's leading sightseeing attraction.

Off the coast of La Romana lies Isla Catalina, which attracts divers and snorkelers, though there are no facilities. It is mainly uninhabited, so bring whatever you need, including fresh water. The tour desks of Casa de Campo or other hotels can arrange excursions, although nothing is organized into a central agency for bookings. Catalina lies only 3.5km (2 1/4 miles) south of La Romana but 18km (11 miles) west of Bayahibe.

Bayahibe is a relatively new tourist development that's a lot more famous and more heavily patronized with Italian, French, Spanish, and, to a lesser extent, British and Canadian groups than it has been, until now, with American clients. Launched onto the world's consciousness in the early 1990s, it didn't become "important" until around 2000. There's no village center, no monumental architecture, not even a permanent settlement here: only a sea-fronting road with some mega-hotels on the sea-fronting side, each facing a sandy beach.

The location of Bayahibe is 30km (19 miles) directly east of La Romana. Playa Bayahibe, its lovely sandy beach, is what put this emerging resort on the tourist map.

You might negotiate with a boat owner at the beach or ask at your hotel if the staff can arrange for a fisherman to the offshore island, Isla Saona, which has some good sandy beaches beset by sand flies and some fishermen's cottages.

Top 3 airlines flying to la romana.

They separated our seats and moved us to the back of the plane. Hundreds of dollars and thousands of miles used and this was my platinum member experience.

New boarding doesn't make sense. Filling front first is slow.

Delta flight was great from the check in all the way to arrival. However, I had a very bad experience. I requested a wheelchair and the wheelchair employee that went to pick me up from the plane in Boston to bring me to the baggage claims told me I have to pay him. I was under the impression that it was a free service and I usually give tips but the person forced me to pay and since I said no because I was upset with his demand when my daughter walked in to pick me up he demanded payment from my daughter who paid him thinking maybe now it is a charged service.

6 hour delay including one after we were boarded. Horrible experience.

Horrible. Grateful to be alive but spent 13 hours at airport only to return back to my familys house and flight changed to next day. They tried to fix a part on plane, had no back up plane and after 10 hours , reattempted the flight and it STILL wasn't fixed. We got a meal voucher and rescheduled flight but there should be some other compensation for the 15 hours spent in airport

It was NOT pleasant. Started from checking our luggage to the last time getting off the plane. The crew was not friendly, the food was horrible and the seats were too close to each other that I got a bruise on my knee.

Nothing unusual. It was fine. I hate having to pay extra for my seat.

Everything was Okay. I was disappointed our luggage didn’t arrive with us and came in a flight 7 hours later. Representative said the will be delivered to the hotel. They have not arrived 24 hours later

We splurged and decided to fly first class. Seats were roomy. But flight crew arrived late to the airport. That delayed our flight. Most of the passengers had to try to make connections flights. I felt bad for them. We checked 4 bags. We got three from the baggage claim carousel. 4th one was lost. Delta online help wasn’t good. Baggage claim staff were sympathetic and nice but we waited around for almost 2 hours and it had t been found. They did find it several hours later and we had to drive back to airport to retrieve it. I won’t be splurging on 1st. Lass again anytime soon. I think we got worse service. I am also not a huge fan of delta but we have family in ATL so we don’t have a ton of choice. What should have been an easy flight turned into a stressful event due to flight crew tardiness and baggage mishandling.

Food TERRIBLE! In First Class- so bad - why was it so much better 20-30 years ago? Comfort-awful-would rather have the old, plush First Class seats than the new hard - too short seats in the new pods -would advise avoiding Delta for any International Flights.

In flight on demand didn't work at our seats. Only a single beverage/snack run.

Little snafu at boarding. Staff communicated with gate poorly. Flight attendant was rude making disembark early. This was an older mint class. Needs an overhaul for sure. Food was good. The male flight attendant was really nice.

My encounter with the entertainment services provided on board was moderate; the functionality of the Wi-Fi connection was either sluggish or nonoperational, while the display screens were antiquated and suffered from poor visibility. On the positive side, the cabin exuded a sense of expansiveness, and the crew exhibited amiable and accommodating behavior throughout the journey.

Everything was great except for some reason crew and ground crew could not figure out how to deal with an electric wheelchair and it delayed us 20-30mins. Was pretty frustrating for passengers and the captain.

Like the space, did not like the snack options, there was no power outlet in seats, no entertainment, no flyfi.

Traveling with JetBlue from NYC was convenient as accessing JFK airport was straightforward via the LIRR to the AirTrain. Maneuvering through the terminal was hassle-free, which was a pleasant start to the journey. However, the flight experience itself left much to be desired. The seating arrangement was notably uncomfortable; despite securing a window seat, space felt cramped. This was exacerbated by the middle seat passenger encroaching on my area, which made the flight less enjoyable. Additionally, while the in-flight entertainment system initially seemed like a reprieve, the sound outlet on my seat was inoperable. This issue turned what could have been a manageable three-hour flight into a rather tedious ordeal, as I was unable to use the entertainment system effectively. While JetBlue provided a smooth process in terms of airport logistics, the on-board experience highlighted areas in need of improvement, particularly in terms of comfort and entertainment system maintenance.

The flight crew that we had in our section may have been tired or something. I asked the flight attendant about my son’s screen not working and she spoke down to me like I was stupid. He still had no working screen throughout his flight. The other members had no personality and seemed like they were annoyed when you asked them for something. Definitely took a hit for simple things on my JB experience.

The flights are back on time and everything else runs perfectly.

I volunteered to let them put my carry on suitcase in the baggage storage area. But when we landed I was told it was being unloaded IN A DIFFERENT TERMINAL! I had to walk (painful for me) a long way to retrieve my bag and my ride had to move from the waiting area they were in to a totally different one. Not happy.

Over 2 hour delay for a 50-minute flight is unacceptable, especially in normal weather. Very poor communication via app

The flight was delayed which was disappointing. There was no pre takeoff refreshment in first, as we had to wait around an hour in our seats before take off that was disappointing too. The inflight entertainment/wifi did not work, and the crew were slow to offer drinks in flight

AA is fabulous. However , Iberia cancelled our Boston - Barcelona flight the morning of the flight - 9/16/24. This was almost a week ago and we have still heard nothing from Iberia/Vueling. Found out from a kayak email that morning that the flight was cancelled. Iberia Customer service reps wouldn’t help us and said to call Vueling. No one answers phone at Vueling. Terrible wild goose chase on DAY OF TRAVEL. AA came to our rescue.

Boston ticket agent Cheryl Porter is WONDERFUL. Our Iberia flight to Barcelona was cancelled the morning we were scheduled to leave and Cheryl was our super hero - she found us seats on a flight to London and on to Barcelona. Truly a “can-do” attitude which we appreciated so much after the Iberia ticket agents told us there was “absolutely nothing they could do”. (As did the customer service agents at Iberia’s call center) Ms Porter is truly a wonderful person who genuinely cares about travelers!

For coast to coast travel the A321 and even the NEO, even in first class will never be excellent. That would take a B787 or 777 to accomplish.

Service not nearly as good as Qatar airways flights used to be on service from PHL to DOH.

No choice of meal in first class. Was the worst meal I’ve ever had in first class.

Experience was fine. Seats were cramped, and we had to wait for repairs before we could take of. Even though the door remained open, we were warned that leaving the plane could cause difficulty trying to fly out later. Staff was pleasant, and climate control was fortunately working. We had trouble at the DFW terminal, but I don't think that was AA's fault.

No complaints. Good WiFi, great crew and excellent speedy baggage claim

Excellent accommodating crew at gate and on board. Baggage claim and gate checking were flawless.

travel to la romana dominican republic

Manhattan, New York.- On Sunday, President Luis Abinader led the presentation of the Open Skies Agreement between the Dominican Republic and the United States, aimed at enhancing cooperation and travel between the two nations. The event took place at the Juan Pablo Duarte School in Washington Heights, Manhattan, where the benefits of the agreement were outlined.

Democratic Senator Adriano Espaillat urged the Dominican Constitutional Court to expedite approval of the agreement, allowing it to take effect soon. “We hope the Constitutional Court will approve the open skies agreement so we can soon see its benefits,” said Espaillat.

The agreement is expected to make travel easier for Dominicans visiting their families, while also boosting tourism and strengthening bilateral relations. U.S. Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and Environment, José Fernández, praised the initiative, noting its potential to deepen supply chains and create stronger connections between the two countries. He also acknowledged Congressman Espaillat as a key advocate for making the agreement a reality, calling him the “best ally” of the Dominican people.
