The best things to do in Riviera Maya: ancient ruins, magical caverns and tree-top adventures

The beautiful coast of the Riviera Maya makes it one of the most popular tourist destinations in Mexico

The beautiful coast of the Riviera Maya makes it one of the most popular tourist destinations in Mexico © CampPhoto / iStock / Getty Images Plus

Extending across the northernmost tip of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, the Riviera Maya is an 83-mile sweep of coastline running from the south of Cancún all the way to the Belize border.

The tourist corridor is a magnet for sun-seeking travelers with its powder-puff white sand beaches, legendary ruins, and the world’s second-largest coral reef. What makes the Riviera Maya all the more appealing is that it’s a year-round destination – although the best time to visit is between February and June when temperatures are mild and crowds thin out.

Beyond the sparkling strands, the Riviera Maya entices with an impressive lineup of well-preserved Maya ruins, world-class dive sites, and fun-filled cenotes (natural swimming holes) . Let’s just say you won’t ever run out of things to do. But if you don’t know where to start, we’ve handpicked the best things to do in Riviera Maya – including both quintessential must-dos and unusual experiences for those who like to stray off the well-trodden trail.

A woman stands on the cliffside admiring the Tulum ruins in Quintana Roo, Mexico

Time travel at the Tulum ruins

Ranked high as one of the most prominent ruins in Mexico , Tulum is a great place to start your Riviera Maya journey. The Tulum ruins are perched on the top of rocky cliffs, high above the azure waters of the Caribbean – an uncommon location for an ancient Maya city. With evidence of habitation dating back as far as 564 CE, Tulum's heyday as a Maya city was in the 1200s and it has withstood the ravages of time and retained its grid-like layout, main structures, and a strong sense of history in every corner.

The compact archaeological site can be seen in a couple of hours; aim to get here before the tour groups arrive at 11 am and bring a swimsuit for a refreshing dip in the inviting water beneath the ruins. There is very little shade at the ruins and the opportunity to cool off in the sea is most welcome. Start with the waterfront temples and meander clockwise through the site – the real prize is the view that awaits along the cliff-edge trail of the Castillo, the tallest structure in Tulum, backed by cobalt waters and a spiny-tailed iguana or two.

Get a digital experience at Mystika Tulum

After exploring the Tulum ruins, make a stop at the new-age interactive digital museum, Mystika Tulum . It delivers a one-of-a-kind sensory experience designed to take you on a journey through the Maya cosmology through multi-sensorial rooms and installations. The venue is modest, and the entrance fee is higher than local museums, but it captures your imagination like no other, with outstanding visuals that both adults and kids will appreciate. This gallery is the brainchild of Pepe Soho, one of the most celebrated photographers in Mexico.

Float in the ancient Maya canals at Sian Ka’an

One of the most biodiverse places in the world, Reserva de la Biosfera de Sian Ka’an is a 1.3 million-acre reserve of mangroves, savannahs, spearmint lagoons, and virgin beaches. Just south of Tulum, this patch of wilderness is the largest protected area on Mexico’s Caribbean coast and an eco traveler’s dream come true. The majority of the Sian Ka’an is out-of-bounds, and only a fraction is designated for sustainable eco-tourism.

Sian Ka’an is best explored on a guided tour, as the rugged trails and waterways are challenging to traverse on your own. Maya-run Community Tours Sian Ka'an runs kayak tours through the lagoons and birdwatching tours that directly benefit the local community. While drifting down canals dug by the Mayas centuries earlier, try to spot giant land crabs and manatees, and listen out for howler monkeys.

A couple hold hands in a sunlit cavern in Yucatan

Swim in a cavern

Underneath the lush jungles of the Yucatán Peninsula lies a secret underworld of turquoise pools and mystical caves. Cenotes were revered by the Mayan civilization and used as a portal to communicate with the gods. Today, you can see why these underground caverns played a pivotal role in the Maya world.

In the crisp mineral-rich water of Cenote Dos Ojos , you’ll get the chance to weave through narrow passages and swim between illuminated stalactites and stalagmites. What you’re seeing is just a fragment of the world's largest underwater cave systems – book a guided snorkeling tour run by the local Maya community or a scuba dive session if you’d like to venture deeper into the cave system.

The trio of cenotes near Playa del Carmen tends to receive fewer visitors: Azul, Cristalino, and Eden are all open-air cenotes with clear-as-glass water and skin-nibbling tropical fish darting around. They’re great for people of all ages – adventurous adults can dive off mini cliffs into the water, kids can wade in the shallow pools or meander along the jungle paths, and seniors have plenty of space for a picnic.

Step back in time at Punta Allen

Located at the end of the Boca Paila Peninsula, the remote fishing village of Punta Allen gives a glimpse of how the Riviera Maya used to be. The picture-perfect beaches are empty except for a few stray dogs and a fisherman or two. A sandy main drag cuts through the sleepy pueblo , lined by crumbling wooden houses, simple loncherias (eateries), and grocery stores.

Getting here is not easy: even though it’s just 25 miles (40km) from the Sian Ka'an entrance, most people take at least two hours to traverse the bumpy dirt track to Punta Allen. But the village is well worth the arduous journey for its low-key atmosphere, traffic-free tranquility, and absence of mass tourism.

Rise early for a dolphin-watching trip or go snorkeling over the technicolored reef. After that, join the village's seniors on a fishing trip, and end the night under the starry skies in a bell tent at Hotel Cielo y Selva .

Swim in the magic waters of Laguna Bacalar

For those keen on veering off the beaten path, we’ll let you in on a secret: Laguna Bacalar is a quiet, little-known lake close to the border of Belize, with inviting spearmint water, stromatolite-rimmed shores, and overwater hammocks. Nicknamed Laguna de Siete Colores (lagoon of seven colors), the water alternates between light turquoise and dark indigo.

To explore the lagoon, base yourself in Bacalar town, just two hours from Tulum by car. The village appeals more to indie travelers than the average package tourist, with a surprisingly good selection of contemporary cafes and food trucks. Rent a kayak or join a boat tour to see the 38-mile-long (60km) stretch of water, making stops at the Canal de los Piratas , a channel that used to be plundered by pirates, and Cenote Cristalino , fringed by ancient pancake-like rocks known as stromatolites.

Watch the sunrise on a SUP

There’s no better time to take to the waters of the Riviera Maya than at sunrise. At this golden hour, the water is as smooth as glass, and the beach is empty save for a few other early birds. The usual raucous atmosphere of Playa del Carmen is gone, and in its place is a soothing silence punctuated by the sound of lapping waves and the squawks of seagulls overhead.

Paddleboarding at sunrise is an extraordinary experience, even for SUP (stand-up paddleboard) enthusiasts. Aloha Paddle Club organizes guided sunrise SUP sessions daily at Inti Beach, in the center of Playa del Carmen. Book in advance as these sessions are popular.

A sea turtle swimming over the coral reef in Akumal, Mexico

Snorkel with turtles in Akumal

Akumal is no longer a secret, but its swimmable lagoon remains the best place to snorkel with turtles in the Riviera Maya. The U-shaped bay and seagrass draw in turtles by the droves, with the coral reef protecting everything inside the bay. Because of the reef, the water here is always clear and calm – perfect conditions for snorkeling. If you’re lucky, you might even spot the elusive eagle ray swimming in the seagrass meadow.

To swim in the protected marine reserve, joining a guided snorkeling tour is mandatory. Snorkeling gear and life safety vests are included. Those with young kids can also sign up for a snorkel excursion and marine biology class here with We Love the Sea .

Fly over the jungles

Active travelers rejoice: the Ruta de Cenotes, just 30 minutes south of Cancún, is a vast expanse of tropical forest that plays host to several eco-adventure parks. These joints, complete with zip line circuits, jungle trails, and cenotes, promise adults and children alike a thrilling good time – with all the safety measures in place.

Selvática is outfitted with 10 different zip lines, flying fox circuits, and even a bungee swing. You can also choose to hop on an ATV (all-terrain vehicle) or a 4x4 buggy and trundle through the bush, though kids under 8 are not allowed on them for safety reasons. Cenotes Zapote is home to four different cenotes - including one with prehistoric sloth fossils. Each is equipped with its own zip line that whisk you through the wilderness.

Learn to surf at Puerto Aventuras

Puerto Aventuras is one of the best surfing beaches in the Riviera Maya, thanks to the perfect swells and water conditions. The beach is protected by seawalls, in a natural curve away from the open ocean.

Book yourself and your kids on fun, interactive lessons run by Nohoch Surf School . Their mini surf camps get raving reviews from little ones aged 4 to 12. If you’re already a surfer, the school has an excellent selection of boards that you can rent.

Explore Isla Cozumel on a Jeep

Across the bay from Playa del Carmen, Isla Cozumel makes for an easy island escape with its low-key atmosphere and rugged, empty beaches. The best way to explore the 30-mile (48 km) long island is to hire a jeep or buggy as most of the island is covered by lush tropical forests, nature reserves, and empty beaches.

Head straight to the Punta Sur Ecological Park at the southern tip of the island – this natural reserve sprawls across 2500 acres of lagoon systems, tropical rainforests, and wild beaches. See the Maya ruin El Caracol, cruise the saltwater lagoon and spot crocodiles, then climb the 133 steps onto the top of the Celarain Lighthouse.

Get artsy in SFER IK

A contemporary art museum constructed mainly out of bejuco (an endemic wood that resembles vine), SFER IK (pronounced spheric) is a work of art in itself. Built using traditional techniques by Maya artisans, the structure was designed to blend in perfectly with the lush jungles of Tulum.

Wander barefoot through the curving corridor and bridges made of twisted vine-like wood and admire the permanent art collection created by renowned artists such as Ernesto Neto and Artur Lescher. Circular windows open out to the dense tropical forest surrounding you, with the sound of the waves in the not-so-far distance – this spot truly showcases how nature and art intertwine in the Riviera Maya.

Cleanse your soul at a temazcal

The Riviera Maya may have developed rapidly over the past decades due to tourism – but its rich Maya culture and traditions remain. An interesting Maya ritual that’s still practiced today is the temazcal , a pre-Colombian purification ceremony believed to cleanse your soul and rid you of illnesses.

A Maya leader leads the rite, guiding you into a dome-shaped sweat house fired up by steaming volcanic rocks, before beating you with corn husks. In the boiling heat, it’s hardly a relaxing experience, but keep your cool and you might just leave rejuvenated and balanced. Yaax Healing Sanctuary runs temazcal ceremonies at full moon led by a Maya healer.

Sign up for a Maya cooking class

Take a crash course in Maya ancestral cuisine and experience a side of the Riviera Maya that few are familiar with. When you book a cooking class with a local Maya family, you’ll get to know them, take a peek into their lives, and learn all about Maya ingredients, traditional dishes, and cooking methods.

Maya Immersion gives you a chance to do just that: from tasting the achiote spice to making massa (corn paste) from scratch and wrapping your own tamales. You’ll discover a cuisine distinctive from the Yucatecan or Mexican culinary world we know.

25 Best Things to Do in Riviera Maya Mexico in 2024

' src=

Catamaran Sail to Isla Mujeres

One of the top excursions in Riviera Maya is a catamaran sail to Isla Mujeres , which is a tiny island just off the coast of Cancun.

The color of the water near Isla Mujeres is the brightest shade of turquoise you’ll find in the region–it’s really unforgettable!

And you can’t miss visiting the famed Playa Norte , the most popular spot on the island and considered to be one of the best beaches in the world.

On a catamaran tour, you can usually snorkel, swim, and lounge on the deck with food and an open bar included.

Most catamaran tours leave from Cancun and offer round trip transportation from Playa del Carmen or the Riviera Maya.

Travelista Tip:  If you have a larger group or want a more exclusive experience, consider booking a  private catamaran tour .

2. Visit the ancient Mayan Ruins of Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza Pyramid, One of the Best Things to Do in Riviera Maya

The ancient Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza are located about 2.5 hours from both Cancun and Playa del Carmen, which makes it a great option for a cultural excursion and day tour.

With impressive pyramids and large ancient remains, Chichen Itza is one of the largest Mayan ruins and one of the most visited archaeological sites in North America.

It is even considered one of the 7 Wonders of the Modern World and a UNESCO World Heritage site .

The easiest way to visit Chichén Itzá from Riviera Maya is on a guided Chichen Itza and cenote tour , which includes round-trip transportation, a cenote swim, and a leisurely stop in the quaint colonial town of Valladolid.

It’s a long day but so worth it for a captivating cultural experience! And you’ll get to cross off visiting one of the 7 Wonders of the Modern World! ✅

⏫ Upgraded Option: For a more private and personalized visit to Chichen Itza, consider booking one of these best private tours to Chichen Itza .

3. Swim with wild sea turtles in Akumal

Sea Turtle on Akumal Snorkeling Tour

Located halfway between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, Akumal is a small beach town where you can swim with sea turtles in their natural habitat directly off the beach.

The easiest way to visit Akumal Bay is to book a guided Akumal snorkeling tour which includes the use of snorkeling equipment, knowledgeable guides, entrance fee and taxes, life jackets, and roundtrip transportation.

Plus, when you go with a reputable guide, they’ll make sure you’re respecting the environment and not doing anything to disrupt the turtles’ natural habitat.

I’ve been to Akumal multiple times and it’s truly an incredible experience getting to swim alongside sea turtles of all sizes right off the beach.

4. Get cultural at Xcaret Adventure Park

Xcaret Mexico Espectacular Show at Xcaret Park

There are many adventure parks in Riviera Maya but the most well known are the theme parks operated by a company called Grupo Xcaret.

Grupo Xcaret has 8 different adventure parks in the region offering various types of adventurous Riviera Maya activities.

The original of Grupo Xcaret’s parks,  Xcaret Park (pronounced “Ish-ka-ret”) features 50 attractions within its massive property.

Visitors can spend a full day out among the jungle trails, swimming in underground rivers, exploring caves, and frolicking on beaches or natural pools.

Drawing your attention towards the country’s culture and heritage, its range of park activities makes it one of the best Riviera Maya excursions for families with younger children.

Stroll through open-air aviaries, the Butterfly Pavilion, and Coral Reef Aquarium. Plus, historians will love the Maya ruins and Mexican Folk Art Museum.

Xcaret Park’s main highlight is the Xcaret Mexico Espectacular production, which is a 300-person crew show that is a history lesson but fun–featuring pre-Hispanic dances and more!

You can read my full Xcaret park review for all the details!

5. Snorkel with giant starfish at El Cielo in Cozumel

Snorkeling with Starfish on the El Cielo Tour in Cozumel

One of the best snorkeling excursions in Riviera Maya Mexico is visiting “El Cielo” in Cozumel, a sandbar where you can snorkel with giant starfish in crystal clear water.

El Cielo can only be visited by boat so the easiest way to get there is to book a guided El Cielo snorkeling tour .

On the El Cielo tour, you’ll get to snorkel at three different coral reefs, as well as visit El Cielo and a super stunning beach called El Cielito.

You can read my full El Cielo tour guide for all the details–it really is an unforgettable experience!

6. Visit the Tulum Ruins

Tulum Ruins

For Mayan Ruins exploration that is not as far away as Chichen Itza, I would definitely recommend visiting the  Tulum Ruins .

Located just north of downtown Tulum, the Tulum Ruins are the closest Mayan ruins to the Riviera Maya and an incredible oceanfront fortress.

The Tulum Ruins can be visited fairly easily on your own or you can book a guided Tulum Ruins tour for the added convenience of an experienced tour guide and roundtrip transportation with hotel pickup.

Once at the archaeological site, you can explore the ancient ruins at leisure or go for a swim at the public beach just south of the ruins.

7. Visit Xel-Ha adventure park

Xel Ha Adventure Park in Riviera Maya Mexico

Another Xcaret park known for aquatic adventures,  Xel-Ha Park  (pronounced “Shell-Ha”) has a prime location around an inlet of the Caribbean Sea, which yields the best water activities.

This stunning natural water park near Playa del Carmen offers cenotes, caves, hidden beaches, and hammock gardens.

In the center lies an expansive “pool” offering unlimited snorkeling, where red flags mark areas rich in marine life.

While swimming and snorkeling take the spotlight, the eco-waterpark isn’t just a large natural aquarium.

Manmade slides, high jumps, and water ziplines add dimension to the park and there’s even a mile-long lazy river.

And you’ll definitely want to climb the Scenic Lighthouse for panoramic views over the park and then glide down one of its four spiral water slides.

You can read my full Xel-Ha review for all the details!

8. Swim in a freshwater cenote

Cenote Taak Bi Ha

The Yucatan peninsula is known for its incredible cenotes (pronounced “say-know-tay”), which are freshwater swimming holes where you can swim, snorkel, or just hang out in a beautiful place in nature.

There are literally thousands of different cenotes in Riviera Maya and the Yucatan peninsula, unlike anywhere else in the world.

Visiting a cenote is one of the most unique things to do in Riviera Maya and a great way to experience the natural wonders of the destination.

Plus, a lot of them have adventure activities like snorkeling, cliff jumping, or overwater ziplines.

Many of the cenotes near Playa del Carmen can be visited easily by driving or renting a car , and then you’ll pay a small entrance fee upon arrival.

Or for a hassle-free option, consider booking an all-inclusive cenote tour with transportation and a guide included.

Travelista Tip:  Regular sunscreen is prohibited at cenotes so you’ll want to be sure to bring  biodegradable sunscreen  to avoid a sunburn.

9. Soar over the jungle at Xplor adventure park

Zipline at Xplor Adventure Park in Riviera Maya Mexico

Another one of my favorite Xcaret adventure parks is called Xplor , which is one of the best excursions in Riviera Maya Mexico for adventure seekers.

At Xplor, you’ll be treated to a full day all-inclusive adventure experience where you can go ziplining on multiple circuits, swim and raft through underwater caves, and drive amphibious vehicles.

Xplor has hands down the best ziplines in Riviera Maya and they even have some overwater ziplines where you will end with a splash!

The park offers a full day of Riviera Maya adventures that will definitely get your adrenaline pumping!

You can read my full Xplor review for all the details!

Travelista Tip:  For an after dark adventure park experience, check out  Xplor Fuego 🔥

10. Navigate through underground rivers at Rio Secreto

Rio Secreto Underground River in Riviera Maya Mexico

Rio Secreto  is one of the most popular attractions in Riviera Maya where you can swim through an impressive underground river with over 1 kilometer of stalactites and stalagmites.

At this totally unique natural attraction, you get to trek through underwater caves, as well as participate in additional activities like biking and rappelling.

And with it being underground, Rio Secreto is an all-weather activity and makes for a great rainy day activity in Riviera Maya.

It really feels like you are in another world! You can read my full Rio Secreto review for all the details!

11. Visit the tropical island of Isla Contoy

Isla Contoy

Located about 30 km north of Isla Mujeres, Isla Contoy is a small, uninhabited tropical island that will leave you with a jaw-dropping first impression!

Only allowing 200 visitors per day to its pristine white-sand beaches lined with palm trees, the island offers a totally exclusive tropical island experience.

Despite its small size, the island is also home to a variety of plant and animal life, including over 100 species of birds.

Isla Contoy can only be visited on an Isla Contoy tour , where you can enjoy the island’s jaw-dropping beach and birdwatching opportunities.

I personally visited Isla Contoy and can honestly say it’s one of my favorite places in Riviera Maya and the most beautiful beach I have seen in Mexico 😍

You can read my full Isla Contoy tour guide for all the details!

12. Snorkel at an underwater sculpture museum

Isla Mujeres MUSA Underwater Museum of Art

For a one-of-a-kind underwater adventure, check out MUSA, the Underwater Museum of Art located off the shores of Isla Mujeres.

This underwater sculpture museum is full of giant artificial habitats including art installations, human statues, and even a house and a car.

To visit MUSA, you can book a MUSA snorkeling tour or scuba diving tour to get an up close view of life-sized statues.

13. Swim with whale sharks in Isla Mujeres

Whale Shark in Isla Mujeres

If you are feeling daring, a more adventurous activity is swimming with whale sharks in Isla Mujeres, which is one of the best Isla Mujeres tours from Riviera Maya .

Whale shark season is only between the summer months of May-September , when the plankton blooms in the shallow waters off the shores of Isla Mujeres.

A whale sharks snorkeling tour is a truly unforgettable experience, where you get to swim right alongside these giant creatures.

They are actually considered gentle giants so really it’s not as scary as it sounds!

You can read my full Isla Mujeres whale sharks tour guide for all the details!

14. See a Cirque du Soleil performance at Joyà

La Joya Cirque du Solei

Located at Vidanta Resorts, Joyà is the only resident Cirque du Solei performance in Mexico.

I’ve seen the show twice and the acrobatic performances are so impressive! And the story is so unique and inspired by local culture.

I even took my entire family when they came to visit and they said it was the highlight of their trip!

Plus, what makes Joya unique is that it is one of the only Cirque du Soleil shows to offer a gourmet dining experience where you can optionally enjoy a 3-course meal and champagne before the show.

You can read my full Joyà Cirque du Soleil review for all the details!

15. Ride ATVs through the Mayan jungle

Riviera Maya ATV Tour

The Riviera Maya landscape is admittedly pretty flat but you can still find some very fun all-terrain vehicle (ATV) or “jungle buggy” experiences.

The best places to drive ATVs are at Xplor adventure park or by booking a Riviera Maya ATV adventure tour with all of your transportation and equipment included.

Be prepared to get dirty as you’ll likely be driving off road through water and mud!

Many Riviera Maya ATV tours include a visit to a cenote afterwards where you can wash off the grime and cool off with a refreshing cenote swim.

16. Discover a hidden lagoon at Kaan Luum Lagoon

Kaan Luum Lagoon

Located just south of Tulum, Kaan Luum Lagoon is a secret swimming hole and one of the less well-known Riviera Maya attractions.

It’s definitely a hidden gem and makes for a fun excursion or day trip. Its most notable feature is a deep cenote in the middle of the lagoon where you’ll see a sharp contrast in the color of the water.

At Kaan Luum Lagoon, you can spend the day swimming in the lagoon, lounging on the dock, or applying a mud mask.

The attraction is somewhat off the beaten path so it’s easiest to visit by renting a car or booking a Kaan Luum Lagoon standup paddleboarding tour .

17. Try standup paddleboarding

Standup Paddle Boarding in Riviera Maya

Standup paddleboarding (SUP) is a unique and fun Riviera Maya activity, offering the opportunity to paddle board right off of the beach and get a killer workout too.

It’s really an incredible experience to go standup paddleboarding in Riviera Maya on the Caribbean Sea with bright turquoise hues and some impressive ocean views.

You might also be lucky enough to spot some tropical fish and other marine life!

I recommend paddle boarding at Aloha Paddle Club in Playa del Carmen, which has the best reputation for paddleboarding and water sports in Mexico’s Riviera Maya.

You can choose from mixed tour groups, sunrise sessions, or even book a SUP tour with them to a nearby cenote or lagoon.

18. Make a splash at Jungala water park

Jungala Water Park in Riviera Maya Mexico

Located at Vidanta Resorts, Jungala is the newest and largest water park attraction in Riviera Maya.

The water park is a great Riviera Maya excursion for families and features extreme slides like a looping water slide, a free fall slide, a near vertical slide, and a high speed flume ride.

It also claims to have the longest lazy river in the world. When compared to Xel-Ha , Jungala is more manmade but still tons of fun!

And for adults or those looking for a more relaxed experience, you can also take advantage of their private cabanas and spa pool.

19. Indulge in local eats on a Playa del Carmen food tour

Trying Marquesitas on a Playa del Carmen Food Tour

If you are a foodie, then I would definitely recommend a  Playa del Carmen walking food tour  for a chance to experience the local food culture.

Playa del Carmen food tours are a fun way to try the best foods and local dishes, and give you the opportunity to meet new people in a relaxed environment.

On the tour, you’ll get to try many different local Mexican and Yucatan specialties, as well as popular Playa del Carmen street foods all hand picked by a local guide.

Most are walking tours, which is also a great way to explore the town of Playa del Carmen on foot as well as 5th Avenue, the town’s main street.

20. Sweat it out at a Mayan temazcal ceremony

Mayan Temazcal Ceremony in Riviera Maya

Taking part in a temazcal ceremony is one of the most unique ways to experience the Mayan culture in the region. A temazcal is essentially a sweat lodge heated by hot stones.

The spiritual sauna experience takes place in the jungle and is led by a Mayan shaman that will conduct a traditional ceremony for healing, relaxation, and releasing toxins.

The Riviera Maya temazcal experience is followed by dinner and a dip in a freshwater cenote.

It’s a totally unique way to experience the Mayan culture, while also improving your health and wellness.

21. Go ziplining at Cenote Zapote eco-park

Cenote Zapote Zipline in Riviera Maya

Cenote Zapote is an eco park near Puerto Morelos along the famous “Ruta de los Cenotes” where you can go ziplining, swim in cenotes, and do other adventure activities.

The park is located pretty far off of the main highway so for easy access, the best way to get there is by booking a guided Cenote Zapote tour .

Visiting Cenote Zapote is a full day adventure park experience where you’ll visit three stunning cenotes, as well as zipline through the jungle, explore the park on bikes, and cruise around on ATVs.

I visited the park with some blogger friends and it was one of the best Playa del Carmen private tours I’ve done!

What I love about Cenote Zapote is that it feels much more natural and is not overly commercialized. You can read my full Cenote Zapote tour guide for all the details!

22. Go on a wildlife expedition to Sian Kaan Biosphere Reserve

Dolphin on Sian Ka'an Tour

Located just south of Tulum, Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is one of the most outdoorsy things to do in the Riviera Maya and perfect for nature lovers.

Officially recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site , Sian Ka’an is one of the largest protected areas in Mexico and offers the unique opportunity to explore a tranquil nature reserve.

While visiting, you’ll have the opportunity to observe wild marine animals like dolphins, sea turtles, and stingrays, as well as exotic plant varieties and birds all in their native habitat.

Due to its remote location, the easiest way to explore the reserve is through a guided Sian Ka’an eco-tour , which is a full-day wildlife expedition offering a small boat trip, snorkeling, and nature observation.

23. Get your adrenaline pumping at Xavage

Xavage Park in Riviera Maya Mexico

The newest of Xcaret’s adventure parks, Xavage is located just south of Cancun, Mexico.

I’d equate it to an Xcaret park on steroids since it’s where you’ll find some of the most adrenaline-pumping activities!

Xavage  offers 7 different heart-racing activities including an intense ropes course, Superman-style ziplining, white water rafting, monster trucks, kayaking, a high-speed jet boat experience, and a kids pool.

The white water rafting and monster truck course are intense–and probably some of the most unique experiences you’ll find at Xcaret theme parks .

You can read my full Xavage review for all the details!

24. Let loose at Coco Bongo Show and Disco

Coco Bongo Playa del Carmen

Advertised as a Las Vegas-style production, Coco Bongo is an all-you-can-drink show and nightclub with locations in both Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

The Coco Bongo Mexico experience attracts vacation-goers from around the world for a 4-hour long pop culture inspired production.

The show features giant screens, acrobats, confetti explosions, celebrity impersonators, tribute singers, and more.

The massive, multi-level halls hold up to 1,800 spectators for a lively night of drinking and dancing–it’s actually a lot of fun!

You can read my full Coco Bongo review for all the details!

25. Go horseback riding in the Yucatan jungle

Riviera Maya Horseback Riding on Beach

Saddle up for a horseback riding adventure if you’re looking for a low key, yet exciting way to explore the Riviera Maya.

Suitable for riders of all levels, this Riviera Maya horseback riding tour takes you horseback riding through the Mayan jungle.

During the ride, you’ll learn about the flora and fauna and even get the chance to spot monkeys, coati, and other wildlife.

Once you reach a natural cenote, you’ll get to dismount and cool off with a cenote swim before heading back to the ranch.

How to Book Riviera Maya Tours

There are so many tours in Riviera Maya that it can definitely be an overwhelming booking experience.

From my personal experience, these are the best ways to book your Mayan Riviera activities:

Book online

The best way to book excursions in Riviera Maya is to book online in advance through booking platforms like Viator or GetYourGuide .

This is what I personally do and recommend for booking Riviera Maya tours. Not only does it allow you to reserve your spot in advance, but it’s much more reliable.

I once purchased an El Cielo tour from a street vendor on 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen and had a terrible experience.

When we arrived in Cozumel for the tour, the tour operator had absolutely no record of our booking and we were almost turned away. Talk about stressful!

While the tour vendors on 5th Avenue may be a little cheaper, booking online from a reputable site such as Viator (owned by TripAdvisor) or Get Your Guide will give you an electronic record of your purchase and a paper trail.

You’ll also have the opportunity to read loads of customer reviews and get firsthand information on what the tours are actually like.

Plus, if there are any issues, it’s much easier to work with these companies’ customer service departments for questions, disputes, or refunds.

I once had to contact Get Your Guide support and they were super responsive and sent me straight away to a direct Whatsapp chat with a support agent.

El Cielo Cozumel

Book at your hotel or resort

If for some reason you’re not able to book a particular tour or activity online, then I would recommend booking with a tour representative at your hotel or resort.

Most hotels and resorts in Riviera Maya will have a tour desk in the lobby where you can book tours and get brochures with more information.

⚠️ Just keep in mind all inclusive resorts will only offer tours with their chosen operator so your options will be much more limited. Plus, you can’t reserve them in advance so it’s possible the spots will sell out for your desired dates.

Riviera Maya Tour Transportation

It’s important to know that the Riviera Maya region is pretty widespread and transportation here can be very expensive.

For this reason, I would highly recommend booking a tour that has transportation included with hotel pickup.

This will by far be your easiest and most hassle-free option, where a large van or bus will pick you up directly from the lobby of most major hotels in Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya.

And if you’re staying at a smaller hotel, Airbnb, or vacation rental, then they will typically give a meeting point in downtown Playa del Carmen like outside of Coco Bongo or La Bodeguita del Medio.

Alternatively, if you are comfortable driving in Mexico on your own, then renting a car in Playa del Carmen is also an option for getting around and exploring the region.

This is a great option if you want to get to some of the more off-the-beaten-path attractions, hidden beaches, and less well known activities in Riviera Maya.

If you do want to rent a car, I recommend booking with Discover Cars , where you can compare rates from both local and international rental companies.

↳ Search for rental cars on Discover Cars here !

Tips for Planning Your Riviera Maya Mexico Excursions

Follow these tips to make the most of your Riviera Maya tour experience:

Plan in advance

There are so many fun activities and tours in Riviera Maya that you’ll want to take some time to plan out your excursions to really make the most of your trip.

Everybody’s vacation style is different so you’ll want to decide what’s most important to you in terms of activities. Are you a total beach bum or more of an activities person?

The luxury resorts in Riviera Maya are pretty spectacular so it’s always a solid option just to stay at the resort!

But if you want to get out and explore the destination, then definitely take some time to research and plan the best tours in Riviera Maya in advance.

Sea Trek at Xel Ha Park in Riviera Maya Mexico

Depending on the length of your trip, I would try to aim for at least 1 or 2 excursions during your stay.

Plan a mix of water activities, adventure activities, and cultural activities depending on your interests.

And don’t be afraid to try something new! After all, one of the most rewarding things about traveling to a new destination is the opportunity to try something new and different. I bet you’ll be glad you did!

Check the weather

It’s best to check the weather forecast to determine ideal days for your excursions, especially for Playa del Carmen boat tours and water activities.

If it’s raining, stormy or very windy, then there’s a chance that activities may be canceled.

Normally tour providers are pretty good about alerting you of concerning weather conditions and will help you to reschedule if needed.

Leave time for R&R

Make sure to leave adequate days for relaxing by the pool and soaking up the sun on the incredible white sand beaches in Riviera Maya .

I tend to try to schedule activities at the beginning of the trip so I can reserve the rest of the days for pure rest and relaxation.

Don’t drink too much the night before

Most tours have extremely early pickup times (like 7AM) so I would avoid scheduling them the morning after a night out of heavy drinking.

Trust me, there’s nothing worse than being hungover on a long boat ride or tour bus!

🇲🇽 Traveling to Mexico soon?

These are the Mexico travel resources I use and recommend:

🏨 Hotels : I always find the best deals for Mexico hotels and resorts on Expedia or Booking.com . If you prefer a vacation rental, check VRBO as they are often cheaper than AirBnB’s added fees!

✈️ Flights : I recommend using Skyscanner for the best Mexico flight deals. Be sure to sign up for their price alerts for your preferred travel dates.

🚗 Rental Cars : I recommend using Discover Cars because you can compare multiple car rental companies and see detailed ratings for overall value, ease of pick-up, efficiency of agents, car condition, and overall time spent.

🚙 Cancun Airport Transportation : I recommend booking a private transfer with Cancun Airport Transportation for the quickest and most hassle-free option!

🤿 Tours & Activities: I always use Viator or GetYourGuide for booking tours and activities in Mexico. You can cancel up to 24 hours before the tour for a full refund, plus they have excellent customer service if you were to have any issues.

🚨 Travel Insurance: After my Dad broke his hand in a taxi accident in Playa del Carmen, I always recommend buying travel insurance before your trip for added peace of mind! I recommend Travel Insurance Master for short trips or Safety Wing for digital nomads.

☀️ Biodegradable Sunscreen : Don’t forget to add biodegradable sunscreen to your Mexico packing list ! Regular sunscreen is prohibited when swimming in the ocean and cenotes in Mexico, so you’ll need to pack some biodegradable sunscreen for sun protection. I recommend Sun Bum Sunscreen , which is reef-friendly, vegan, and cruelty-free.

Thank you to Felipe for the amazing tours. He is so so understanding, nice and funny! I learned and discovered some beautiful places and felt really at ease with his guiding. He speaks spanish, english and french so we could exchange and understand each other perfectly. I truly recommend if you want to discover el Yucatán! ✨ Nilla

Hi, I’m interested in a group tour for 10/14 days in the Yucatan/Mayan Riviera peninsula, this November. Can you offer this with hotel options too please ? Thanks so much.

I absolutely loved Felipe’s tour. It was worth my trip, even if I did nothing else. He is so warm and friendly, and you feel at ease immediately. I know he loves the heritage of the area, and he easily shares his extensive wealth of knowledge. He knows the best times to go so you miss the crowds. He makes each site visited so special, you feel like it’s your very own tour. I highly recommend him!!

  • Can you climb Chichen Itza? It is not possible to climb any structures at Chichen Itza. In 2006 authorities closed its pyramid and it is prohibited to climb.

Frequently Asked Questions

Useful information and answers for our visitors.

What is the minimum age for being able to participate?

Four years old.

Do minors have to be accompanied by an adult?

Yes, they must be accompanied by an adult. Even though we have a tour guide, an adult must be personally responsible for any minors. However, if you wish to have a tour with a group of children, there can be a ratio of five children for every adult.

Do you sell videos taken of each tour group?

We do not sell videos, but we do take photographs of your tour. You can purchase these photos individually and we also sell CDs featuring many photos of your expedition including a few classic pictures of the nature reserve.

Can I take a camera with me on the tour?

In order to protect the safety of individuals, the group and the cave, you are not allowed to bring photography or video equipment into the caves, since you can slip or damage a natural structure while inside. However, you may use them outside the cave.

During the expedition, we have professional photographic equipment and lighting inside the cave, which allows us to safely capture your adventure on film and deliver high quality photographs. Common cameras are barely able to generate a bright enough flash inside Río Secreto and they are unable to capture and illuminate the beauty and scope of the entire cave.

Are there lockers available?

Yes, we have lockers with keys, available to you at no extra cost.

Can pregnant women participate in the tours ⁄ programs?

Since this tour takes place inside caverns, the path is windy and the ground is hard limestone rock that can be a little slippery in some areas. Although it is not high impact, risky or arduous, for the safety of individual visitors as well as the group, we do not recommend the tour for pregnant women, nor for persons with claustrophobia, heart problems, difficulty walking.

Is there a route that does not have stairs or one that suits people who have difficulty walking? No. Our goal is to leave the cave untouched and preserved in its natural state. The tour’s only path winds through rocky, natural formations.

How thick is the wetsuit?

It is 2.5 to 3 millimeters thick.

If I don’t know how to swim, can I still take the tour?

It is not required that you know how to swim. You only need to know how to float. The in-water portion of the tour is very brief and shallow. In addition, you will be aided by your life jacket and wetsuit, which help you stay afloat.

What is the temperature of the water?

The water is cool, with a temperature of 22º C to 24º C, or 69º F to 75º F. However, our visitors wear neoprene wetsuits and life vests to keep them comfortable and help mitigate the brisk water temperature.

What does the tour consist of?

This is a one-of-a-kind, guided cave tour that includes a combination of walking and swimming.

What happens if I want to go on the tour, but I have a child that is younger than the age in which they’re allowed to participate? Do you have someone who can take care of children who are too young to take the tour?

In these cases, please ask Río Secreto in advance if there is someone who can care for your children, specifying the date and time in which the babysitter will be needed, this service has an additional cost.

Isn’t the cost of the tour a little high, considering the amount of time that you’re in the cave?

Should I arrive ahead of time for my tour?

Yes, we recommend that you arrive at the nature reserve ticket office at least 20 minutes before the time your tour starts.

Should I bring money for extra expenses?

Really, there are no additional expenses inside the reserve. However, we recommend that you take along some cash for purchasing souvenirs, photographs and/or for tipping the guides.

Do I need to bring sun protection?

The tour takes place in the shade since you are inside the cave almost the entire time, so you are not really exposed to the sun. We also ask all visitors to take a quick shower before going into the cave in order to eliminate possible toxins – like lotions, makeup and hair gel – that could pollute the cave and harm its delicate ecosystem.

Adventure Awaits: Discover Things to Do in Riviera Maya

Daring exploits abound in this ancient seaside region.

Cirque du Soleil logo

With leafy palm jungles, crisp white beaches, and crumbling ruins, Riviera Maya is an adventurer’s paradise. Its special blend of history, culture, and natural splendor lights a spark in bold travelers. There are plenty of things to do in Riviera Maya . Here’s where to unleash your inner explorer.

Activities at Vidanta Riviera Maya

This is the zenith of vacation bliss. Vidanta Riviera Maya isn't just a resort; it's a full-blown experience. There’s fulfillment for every traveler here. Thrill-seekers meet their match at the Jungala Aqua Experience, catching surf in the pool amid lush vegetation.

Resort nature strolls offer walks on the wild side within reach of home, where poolside canopy beds beckon after a sun-drenched day of grand excursions. These exclusive ventures aren’t open to the public. Secure your entry by booking your Riviera Maya journey at Vidanta.

The culmination of our experience at Vidanta Riviera Maya is our show JOYÀ . A loving reminiscence of a girl and her grandfather, JOYÀ invokes thought and heart as it spins tales of zany creatures and characters, giant machines of times yet to come, and vessels from worlds outside our own.

This dinner event’s theater is just as remarkable as the story it holds. Carefully planned and created, it appears as if it’s always been here — as if the environment around it was just waiting for it to rise.

Dare to Be Dazzled!

Adventure awaits in Riviera Maya with high-energy Cirque du Soleil shows. Dive into a world of acrobatics and wonder.

Ancient Mayan Ruins

History comes to life among the remains of a once-great city.

1. Visit Tulum Ruins

There’s an endless list of things to do in Cancún , Riviera Maya’s busy neighbor. But what you can’t find in a bustling metropolis is a fascinating archaeological site delicately perched on a rocky clifftop.

The Tulum Ruins is all that’s left of a powerful port city. Jade and obsidian exports flushed the land with riches, but not forever. A toppled wall now leaves the Mayan ruins open for viewing. Take a walk through the well-preserved castle, an unearthly portal to the 13th century, set against the Caribbean on the curved horizon.

2. Discover Chichen Itza

Every vacation needs a World Wonder, and Chichen Itza delivers. The worn stones of this ancient site date back to the fifth century, and they remain sacred and wholly absorbing. El Castillo towers over the city, its massive steps straining toward the clouds.

To walk through here is to glimpse an era frozen in time. Stone carvings stay etched into the ball court, and holy temples retain a chilling spirit. Book a tour to put your visit in the hands of a charming docent with inside knowledge of the historic site.

Diving and Snorkeling in Cenotes

These sinkholes are ripe for aquatic exploration.

3. Snorkel at Cenote Dos Ojos

Summer is one of the best times to visit Riviera Maya . Here, the warmer months bring new life to a year-long activity deep beneath the sea. Snorkeling at Cenote Dos Ojos offers an up-close look at the sacred caves. Venture under the sea and follow a twisting, turning passageway through narrow caverns.

Delicate stalactites form a winding undersea maze where divers can test their snorkeling skills. Helpful guides steer visitors toward stunning scenes filled with jungle wildlife.

4. Dive in Gran Cenote

Gran Cenote stands out among other natural caverns for its size and stunning landscape. Several cenotes are interconnected by quaint wooden walkways. Put on your swimsuit, slather on some sunscreen, and dip in an ancient cenote.

The long-standing pools are highly visible for easy wildlife viewing. Whether you’re an acrobatic type of swimmer or simply looking to lounge in an ancient aquifer, Gran Cenote is worth a visit. Pointed stalactites, dense vegetation, and jungle wildlife make this a swim you won’t forget.

Adventure Sports and Eco-Tours

Test your mettle on these adrenaline-driven excursions.

5. Zip-line at Xplor Park

Xplor Adventure Park has plenty to offer jungle-bound adrenaline seekers. Naturally, we’re drawn to an activity worthy of our high-flying feats: the zip line. The Xplor's zip lines happen to be one of the most-visited spots worldwide.

High in the air, the jungle whooshes past, its green tops forming a plush mat of vegetation. The wind rushes by as you pick up speed, zipping through the jungle before you make an aquatic landing.

6. Tour the Jungle on an ATV

Jungle roads offer an escape into the unknown, a daring adventure resting just beyond the palms. The boldest travelers make their journey atop a hardy little ride with enough off-road power to conquer the terrain.

The Riviera Maya ATV Adventure is slightly perilous, unbelievably muddy, and, of course, seriously fun. Zip across twisty jungle paths as trees whip by and the ATV's engine roars. At the end of your route, soak in a cenote to cool off. Or, if you’re a height fanatic like us, take your journey back by zip line.

Cultural Experiences and Workshops

Dive deep into Riviera Maya culture at these vibrant spots.

7. Take a Mexican Cooking Class

Some of the best things to do in Riviera Maya revolve around food. Mexican cuisine is a blazing blend of spice, tang, and irresistible freshness. At a cooking class, you might find a way to bring that essence home with you.

Step inside your instructor’s home for an authentic exploration of Mexican food. In a cozy, buzzing kitchen, you’ll feel like one of the family. Press soft tortillas and slice nopalitos for a fresh salad to round out your six-course meal. Then, let loose for a funky fiesta.

8. Participate in a Temazacal Ceremony

Mayan culture has a rich history largely unknown to unsuspecting tourists. Slip into the Mayan way of life with an authentic Temezacal ceremony. A white-clad shaman will guide you on a tour through a Mayan community. Here, in the jungle, you’re privy to a unique discussion of long-held Mayan traditions and ways of life.

The ritual begins when you enter the temazcal, a natural steam bath, for a mind-and-body detox. Cleansed and purified, you’ll take a refreshing dip in a cenote before returning home with a clear mind.

Embrace the Spirit of Adventure and Culture in Riviera Maya

A visit to this tranquil stretch of coastline offers an escape into bold flavors, stunning visuals, and full-body sensations. Experience it all in one night with a seat at our show JOYÀ , featuring at Vidanta Riviera Maya. This heart-wrenching tale of an alchemist and his spunky granddaughter is a meditation on life’s greatest secrets.

Our troupe of zooming, twirling acrobats draw on Mexico’s history and the audience’s five senses to carry the theater along with them as they set off on the ultimate quest. Brimming with thrills and joys and touched by the hand of whimsy, JOYÀ is a performance built to astound. Don't miss out on the joy of JOYÀ. Book your tickets today.

This golf-rich corner of Mexico just became way more accessible

An aerial view of the 6th hole at PGA Riviera Maya, a Robert Trent Jones II design that weaves through natural lakes and cenotes.

Set out on Federal Highway 307, the artery that runs north and south along the eastern corridor of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, and you’re likely to experience a few momentarily loco things. First, the word highway is a little rich. A roughhewn, utilitarian roadway that for more than half of its 224-mile length is reduced to two lanes, there’s nothing particularly elevated about it. Then there are the speed bumps, or topes . Sometimes well marked, sometimes not marked at all, they can be jolting when you’re ripping along at the 100-kilometers-per-hour speed limit. More jarring, at least for on-edge Americanos with rental car plates, are the scattering of police checkpoints, where drivers are forced to slow their roll for spot inspections. It’s a little bit Nissan Sentra, a little bit Narcos , but mostly — mostly — a benign show of machismo.

Maybe the oddest eccentricity of Highway 307 is its lack of exits. Signage isn’t abundant and neither are off-ramps, especially along the undeveloped, densely jungled stretches of the Yucatán that set apart the coast’s string of sun-blasted tourist destinations: booming Cancún to the north, Playa del Carmen a little further south and the even more southernly outposts of Akumal, Tulum and Chetumal. For miles and miles, there’s no way to get off Highway 307. But if there’s a hemmed-in, you-can-check-out-any-time-you-like-but-you-can-never-leave quality to it, who’s complaining? In lieu of exits, what dots heavily trafficked 307 are mammoth, ornately designed portals to the luxurious playgrounds hidden just beyond the jungle line. The highway signs don’t read MAIN STREET or MINNEAPOLIS, they read BAHIA PRINCIPE and SECRETS AKUMAL — resort names. And behind each elaborate marble or limestone gateway sits a pleasure palace and a prime piece of the Caribbean.

Aerial view of the conrad

Over the years, Highway 307 has complicated the movement of more than just tourists. Development in the lower Yucatán has, to some degree, been impeded by the region’s limited access. Until recently, travelers booked into resorts in and around Tulum, for example, had to put up with a two-hour-plus drive from the airport in Cancún before they could slide into their first margaritas. That long haul kept some of these resorts and municipalities appealingly low-profile, but it didn’t really suit Mexico’s tourism ambitions. After years of drawing-board dawdling, the charmingly boutique, government-funded Tulum International Airport opened last December, with heavyweight carriers — including Delta and American — committed to delivering direct-to-Tulum flights from Dallas-Fort Worth, Denver, Houston, Miami and Newark, among other key U.S. hubs. International flights will follow.

What does this mean to the Yucatán’s hospitality players? Expansion and, they hope, a rush of new business. What does it mean to golfers? In the case of one high-end resort, an enticing offer.

The Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya is tucked behind one of the lavish portals that line Highway 307. An hour’s drive north of the new “jungle airport,” the resort welcomes its guests with what one driver calls a “Mayan massage for free” — a winding journey along a palm-lined cobblestone entryway so spectacularly beautiful and bumpy it relaxes your chi before you’ve even claimed your room key. If you’ve ever blissed out at a cloistered utopia like the Conrad, you’ll be familiar with its immediate rewiring of your senses, starting with a breezy, open-air lobby big enough to contain the Carrier Dome and chic enough to take your breath away. You’ll also know the place’s restorative powers. For a few days, your most pressing life decisions will involve choosing between the sunrise yoga or the overflowing breakfast buffet, the white sand beach or the tiered infinity pools, the paloma or the mojito, the “ocean wave” massage or the detox ritual “connected to the Mayan gods of sun and wisdom,” the authentic Mexican feast or the sublime teppanyaki, sushi and short ribs.

The Conrad — one of the luxury-branded hotels in the Hilton empire — even tempts you to just hole up. Nearly 200 of its rooms include balconies with ocean views and a private hot tub that, with a couple of Tetris moves, cozily accommodates two. The indoor shower has a Caribbean view too — assuming you can tear yourself away from the views on a flatscreen TV the approximate width of your king bed.

The par-3 15th hole at Mayakoba.

By design, the Conrad Tulum leaves you awestruck and enveloped. But if you’re a golfer, it wants to get you out too. Early this year, the resort teed up an intriguing deal. On top of the cost of a double-occupancy room ($469 per night for an ocean-view king), an upcharge of about $430 buys you and a partner playing privileges on two of the Yucatán’s best courses: Robert Trent Jones II’s PGA Riviera Maya, a five-minute drive from the resort, and, an hour up Highway 307, Greg Norman’s Tour- and LIV-tested El Camaleón at Mayakoba.

“Every day that I’m on this side of the big divot, I’m feeling great,” says the 84-year-old Jones, who remembers carving his Tulum course (initially called Bahia Principe Riviera Maya) out of the jungle before it opened in 2010. The architect has built layouts on two of Mexico’s coasts, the Pacific and the Caribbean. The difference, he says, is that the Caribbean side is “endless, lush.” And so is the jungle. “You have to keep fighting it,” Jones says, “because it’ll come back if you don’t maintain it.”

PGA Riviera Maya proves his point. Unfolding on 290 acres adjacent to a limestone quarry, the course is crisscrossed with crystal water features, bordered by impenetrable tree lines and — because Mexico is where the wild things are — crawling with inquisitive iguanas. The lizards are almost as beguiling as the architect, who loves to play entertainer and gadfly. Jones is a great proponent of the pleasure principle — rolling fairways and greens, epic doglegs, cool elevation changes — and a pest at the same time. Here, after you’ve pegged it on the par-3 5th, he makes you wait ten holes for the next par 3, then thumps you with a water-lined 245-yarder to an elevated green. He jokes about one of the course’s fine signature holes, No. 6, which features a cenote — one of the Yucatán’s estimated 10,000 captivating sinkholes — to the left of its green. “If you want to retrieve your ball,” he says, “just get a scuba suit. Sometimes water holes aren’t visible, they’re under you.”

About four years ago, Jones’ course — inland, playful and ranked in the top 30 in Mexico — formed an alliance with the PGA of America, and it’s worthy of the partnership. By the time your car — stocked with snacks and cold drinks and included in the price of the golf package — returns you to the Conrad you’ll appreciate what Jones, a maestro of high-flying metaphors, means when he says the best course design isn’t about repetition, “it’s more like a symphony.”

the poll at the conrad tulum.

Greg Norman has gone punk rock these days, but his course at Mayakoba, which just barely touches the Caribbean and is even tighter off the tee, is a lyrical blend of tangled mangrove, tropical foliage, hardpan waste areas and Instagram-ready canals and lagoons. Even the wildlife is agreeable. On the first tee, the starter’s job isn’t to outline restrictions but to allay fears of what might emerge from the trees. Fans who tuned into the Tour’s WWT Championship at Mayakoba or, more recently, the LIV Golf roadshow, have seen the racoon-like coatis that roam Norman’s course. After the starter warns you to safeguard your grub from these lumbering foodies, he, perplexingly, encourages you to grab a free piece of fruit. Clearly, the coatis are good for business. Turns out this guy is a starter, a zookeeper and a marketer for El Camaleón.

Not that it needs selling. The course, still flecked with billboards from the LIV event in February, is tee-to-green with golfers. If the pace of play at PGA Riviera Maya is pleasingly languid thanks to a relatively open tee sheet, play at El Camaleón slows, in part, because of the jungle. Hit your ball into the copse and not only will you not find it, you’ll not find any ball. It’s a mysterious and costly Houdini act, but worth it given how much the place pays you back in championship-quality golf and the bragging rights of a Mayakoba scorecard.

The question is, does the Conrad golf package push the pencil? Green fees at the Jones and Norman courses run in the range of $250 per player, so the four rounds, premium transportation and road treats bundled by the resort are a steal.

There’s one last idiosyncrasy you won’t have bargained for on funky old Highway 307, which, in the coming years, will be less fatigued as Mexico unveils another of its tourism-stoking initiatives: El Tren Maya, 290 miles of train service that will link resorts, historic ruins, airports and towns big and small up and down the Caribbean coast. RETORNO is the sign you see over and over again as you rattle along 307. It’s the equivalent of a U-turn posting and a heads-up for practically the only way to reverse course on that endless highway. RETORNO. RETORNO. RETORNO. As the signs fly by on your way out of Tulum, the repetition is hypnotizing.

Don’t put it past Mexico to be sending you a message.
