Taylor Swift Wore An Eras Tour Outfit With A Sweet Meaning In Sweden

No one loves an Easter egg more than she does.

Taylor Swift wears yellow and blue for fans in Sweden during her first Eras Tour performance in Stoc...

When Taylor Swift first brought her Eras Tour to Europe in early May, her fans spotted numerous changes to the show . Chief among them was the much-anticipated addition of songs from her latest album, The Tortured Poets Department , but there were other surprises, too, from her surprise reordering of the set list to her glitzy new outfits. And, of course, the queen of Easter eggs found new ways to convey messages to Swifties.

Taylor’s Most Fitting ’Fit

Swift’s European Eras debut came in Paris on May 9. Over her four concerts there, she performed her 1989 set in a glittery crop top and skirt set, changing the color of the ombré pieces each night. She kept it up when she performed the first of three shows in Stockholm, Sweden, on May 17. Except, this time, she wore her most fitting color combination yet.

It was yellow and blue for Swift on Night 1 in Sweden. The bright colors matched the country’s flag and seemed like an extra way to show love to her Swedish fans. Naturally, her attention to detail did not go unnoticed. “Taylor said she’s in her ‘Swedish Era’ tonight,” one happy fan tweeted .

Taylor Swift performs in the colors of the Swedish flag in Stockholm on May 17.

Taylor’s Many Color Combos

Swift had four other versions of the same custom-designed Roberto Cavalli outfit in Paris. First it was pink and blue on Night 1, and then orange and purple on Night 2. Next, she moved to green and pink on Night 3, and then finally to yellow and red for her final show in the City of Love. Not surprisingly, her yellow and red variation made Swifties think of her guy on the Chiefs, Travis Kelce , especially since she wore it on a night when he was in the audience cheering her on.

PARIS, FRANCE - MAY 09: (EDITORIAL USE ONLY. NO BOOK COVERS.) Taylor Swift performs onstage during "...

Every night, Swift has worn the outfit with mismatched shoes. The high-heeled ankle boots are Christian Louboutin, and they always color-coordinate with the rest of her ensemble. Swift hasn’t revealed where she got her inspiration for the look, but it’s a Carrie Bradshaw-approved move .

The Ongoing Easter Egg Hunt

The Eras Tour is continuing its journey across Europe through August, and then Swift will have a break until October, when she picks back up in the United States and Canada. It’s a mammoth run, but don’t expect Swift to let it get boring. She’s bound to keep surprising us with new Easter eggs along the way.

Yale college 2024: meet some of the graduates.

Nathan Chen, Awa Cisse, Rohan Krishnan, Olivia Sally, Max Hammond, and Mirabel Nguyen.

Top row, left to right, Nathan Chen, Awa Cisse, and Rohan Krishnan. Second row, left to right, Olivia Sally, Max Hammond, and Mirabel Nguyen.

Here, Yale News spotlights a few of the exceptional members of the Yale College Class of 2024, a group whose accomplishments and contributions have strengthened the Yale campus and the world beyond.

Selected from nominations submitted by residential college heads and deans, these outstanding students include poets and physicists, pianists, and environmentalists, even an Olympic gold medal winner.  One arrived on campus with visions of becoming a neurosurgeon, but soon found his calling as a writer. Another, who came to Yale through the Eli Whitney Students Program, returned to her native Senegal with other Yale scientists waging a long-term battle on malaria. When they weren’t in the classroom, they were assisting migrant communities, creating new curricula for schoolchildren, or looking to prove long-held physics theories.

We hope this small but impressive sample offers a sense of the creativity, compassion, and resilience of the undergraduate Class of 2024.

Nicole Alleyne

Nicole Alleyne

For Nicole Alleyne, the human body is a versatile instrument — a maker of music, a channel to the past, a tool for learning, and a link to the land. She has tapped into these potentials while inspiring others to do the same through her academic and extracurricular pursuits at Yale College and beyond.

In her capstone project at Yale, Alleyne reimagined outdoor education with a focus on connecting Black students to the land.  She also did fieldwork for a “land-based pedagogy” project during a gap year, leading a natural science curriculum for 5th-graders in Oregon.

“ Something that is totally missing in traditional education is treating students’ bodies as active parts and interlocutors in their learning experience,” she said. “For instance, when learning about plant species, we were using our senses. We were looking or touching, smelling… Your body has all of these tools in order to learn about the world. How can we use our bodies and these gifts in ways we might not be able to do in the classroom?”

Nathan Chen

Nathan Chen

Nathan Chen always knew his Yale career would be split in two: when he arrived in the fall of 2018, the figure skater already had the 2022 Winter Olympics in his sights, and would need to take time off to prepare and compete.

While on campus, the demands of training meant that his days were packed, with classes in the morning and rink time in the afternoon. And even as he carried a full course load, he embarked on a remarkable competitive winning streak. He continued to dominate the sport during two years of leave from Yale, reaching the summit of the sport with a gold medal in men's single figure skating at the Beijing Olympics in 2022. Then came a whirlwind few months that included talk show appearances and a tour with Stars on Ice.

Yet when he returned to Yale that fall, it was with a renewed sense of excitement at becoming a student again —  and discovering some of the experiences he’d missed the first time around.

Awa Cisse

There’s a word that carries deep cultural meaning in Awa Cisse’s native Senegal; Téranga , which comes from the Wolof language, connotes the values of selflessness and generosity, and the importance of giving back to one’s community.

For Cisse, the word téranga isn’t just a reminder of her Senegalese roots, it’s a sort of guidepost for how she wants to live her life.

As a young, girl she frequented hospitals for a variety of reasons and developed an appreciation for  just how many people it takes to provide patient care.  “There is this whole ecosystem of care, from the people who greet you at the front door to those who assist you when you’re leaving,” said Cisse, who came to Yale as part of the Eli Whitney Students Program.

“ Every single piece of the puzzle is important, and it all helps make everything work. This is what inspired me to pursue a life in health care.”

Amy Cohen

Drop in on Amy Cohen and chances are you’ll find her creating something beautiful: an architectural frame, a laser-cut puzzle, a strawberry cake, an oil painting. The mechanical engineering student’s online portfolio also displays a music box, a ceramic bowl, even a menorah made of hex nuts.

“ My grandfather bought me an Erector Set when I was little — sort of foreshadowing that I’ve always loved making things,” said Cohen.

She chose her major because it combined math and design — “two things I really like.” While completing a professionally accredited track with a near-perfect GPA, she worked with the acclaimed Hatfield Group as a structural engineering intern.  Meanwhile, the mechanical engineering department, recognizing her enthusiasm for the field, chose her as an undergraduate representative for committee and recruitment work.

“ It’s a small major — we’ve all had many classes together, so I’d say it feels like family,” Cohen said. “And I'm lucky to have several professors who have really taken an interest in helping me far beyond what was required in their class.”

Ben Everett-Lane

Ben Everett-Lane

Ben Everett-Lane’s academic journey has been driven by a deep curiosity about others — and a desire to connect.

When he learned that in 2012 some residents on the Connecticut shoreline decided to stay in their homes despite the threat of Hurricane Sandy, he became fascinated with how they reached this decision. It would become the topic of his undergraduate thesis.

“ How people perceive and behave around climate change is meaningful to me, because fundamentally, we don’t need more science to prove that climate change exists — there’s clearly some disconnect between the science and the way that we perceive it and interact with it,” he said. “I’m interested in being a person who’s able to re-analyze, communicate, and work with different groups of people around climate change to tackle these knowledge gaps.”

Laura Guerra-Lopez

Laura Guerra-Lopez

Growing up in Miami, Laura Guerra-Lopez would pepper her parents with questions about their native Venezuela, the once-democratic nation that was by then mired in political and economic chaos.

Looking back, Guerra-Lopez is grateful for the frank, but age-appropriate way her parents included her in those dinnertime conversations.  “They would have real conversations,” she said. “They would tell me about what was going on, but they introduced things in a way that was not so devastating that I turned away from it.”

Those interactions with her parents, and their closeness as a family in a new country where they had no other relatives, ignited her passion for social justice and serving the immigrant community.

Max Hammond

Max Hammond

Over the winter, Max Hammond gave more time than usual to the piano — about eight hours a day, up from his long-term average of about five. He was applying to conservatories and aiming to impress.

The mathematics major from Los Angeles also took care to provide for his customary allotment of nightly rest: “I can’t function without eight or nine hours,” he said.

The extra keyboard and pillow time paid off: Hammond, a past winner of Yale’s Sharp Prize for “most outstanding performer in the junior class,” was accepted at six top music conservatories. After Yale, he’ll enroll at Julliard as a master’s degree candidate in solo piano performance, in tune with his pursuit of a career as a recitalist steeped in but hardly confined to the classical music cannon.

“ I want to figure out what’s next in classical music,” he said.

Rohan Krishnan

Rohan Krishnan

Supporting refugee students as they navigated their new lives in New Haven was just one of many ways Rohan Krishnan made global connections during his time at Yale.

He came to campus committed to helping young migrants succeed academically — a cause he became passionate about while performing community service as a high school student. Beyond that, he was simply eager to experience as many new people, subjects, and activities as time would allow, thinking “the sky’s the limit.”

Still, he was amazed by the multitude of Yale’s offerings.

“ Never would I have imagined that I would meet world leaders, take courses with several former U.S. ambassadors, or tackle a real-world foreign policy issue,” said Krishnan, who majored in global affairs.

Alyssa Michel

Alyssa Michel

Before arriving at Yale four years ago, Alyssa Michel imagined that college life would be something like an extension of her high school years. An engaged student in high school, involved in 20 or so clubs, she expected her time at Yale would involve similar pursuits.

“ I thought that if I swam in high school, then I would swim in college. Or if I did journalism in high school, I would have to do journalism in college,” said Michel. “What I didn’t expect is that you can do whatever you want. And, especially at a place like Yale, when you do something, it becomes your baby, and you invest a lot of time into it.”

This realization opened up many new worlds to Michel — including podcasting, gardening, teaching,  and even launching a business inspired by her grandmother’s traditional sorrel recipe.

Grace Miller

Grace Miller

As a Yale sophomore, Grace Miller began working as a student tutor in the Department of Economics. Helping her peers grasp the principles and intricacies of macroeconomics made her realize she that has a passion for education.

A year later, she began working as an intern three days a week at Common Ground High School, a public charter school in New Haven, serving as an aide in an outdoor leadership class and freshman algebra, chaperoning overnight camping trips, and running an afterschool program. And for her senior thesis, the economics major, who also completed the Education Studies Scholars Intensive Certificate, conducted an analysis of the effects of public school district mergers in Vermont.

Next year, she will teach in Chattanooga, Tennessee’s public school system.

John Nguyen

John Nguyen

John Nguyen entered Yale with plans to become a neurosurgeon. Instead, he found his calling as a writer.

As a high school student in St. Paul, Minnesota, he had been laser-focused on STEM subjects. But after taking some English classes at Yale he discovered a new love for reading and writing — with the support of a community of humanists that included a Nobel Prize-winning poet.

He decided to major in English and developed such a fondness for poetry that he started writing poems on his own. Last year Nguyen was selected to represent Yale in the annual Connecticut Poetry Circuit, a statewide competition of college student poets.

“ I’d never encountered such community in any other space.”

Mirabel Nguyen

Mirabel Nguyen

Mirabel Nguyen came to Yale having never visited the campus. In fact, she’d barely seen any photographs before arriving in New Haven for the first time. But when selecting a college, she was determined not to be swayed by beautiful scenery anyway; she wanted to choose a school solely on its academic merits.

Nguyen was determined to excel academically and busy herself with extracurricular activities.  But after finally arriving at Yale, she began to develop more holistic goals.

“ I learned that it’s so much more than academic and extracurricular excellence that matters to me,” Nguyen said. “It’s the relationships that I’ve been building with people that show me how to be a better person.”

Olivia Sally

Olivia Sally

If you had asked Olivia Sally a year ago where she’d be after graduating from Yale, she would have answered that she would be in law school. But a conversation with Mira Debs last spring changed everything.

Sally had just dipped into the icy waters of the Madison Surf Club as part of a polar plunge event at the invitation of her teacher, Debs, executive director of Yale's Education Studies Program. While chatting over post-plunge tacos, Debs mentioned the life-changing experience she had as a Rhodes Scholar, and asked Sally whether she’d considered applying for a similar fellowship.

After eventually applying for, and receiving, a Marshall Scholarship, Sally decided to pursue a Master of Education and Master of Public Policy during two years in the UK, the first member of the Yale Education Studies Program.

Barkotel Zemenu

Barkotel Zemenu

Barkotel Zemenu is a believer in the revelatory nature of relationships.

At the most fundamental level, he says, relationships between unseen particles form the scaffolding upon which the universe flourishes; on a more human level, relationships between people — especially when speaking a common language — make the experience of living deeply fulfilling.

Zemenu immersed himself in both kinds of relationships at Yale. He excelled in physics, focusing largely on research and development for a detector that may one day prove the existence of a theorized nuclear process called neutrinoless double beta decay, spoke at scientific conferences nationally and internationally, and conducted research on multiple continents.

In a way, however, Zemenu says his treasures lie elsewhere.  “I did not expect college to be the place where academics stopped being my life’s top priority,” he said. “It was a place where I would find far more surpassing joy in the depth of my relationships, living with a fundamental others-centeredness.”

At the concert, Swift ended up giving Kelce a special tribute on stage. During the surprise song portion of the show, she said, “I always do two different songs during the acoustic section. One is on guitar. One is on piano, and I switch it up every single night, because here on the Eras Tour, we feel like every single night should be special and different than every other night. Can you believe this is our 87th show on the Eras Tour?”

She then started playing “The Alchemy,” one of the songs off her new album, The Tortured Poets Department , believed to be about Kelce. She mashed it up with “Treacherous” from her album Red, another one of her poignant love songs that captures the experience of falling for someone.

If Swift had done this tribute at any show Kelce attended, it would’ve been sweet. But choosing to perform it during the 87th show is, of course, an Easter egg, as Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs jersey number is 87.

It marks one of the most romantic moments of her tour so far, if not her entire performing career.

Swift is not subtle about her feelings about Kelce and their high school-like romance in this love song’s lyrics.

Kelce hasn’t spoken about the tribute or concert yet, but given his track record of sharing details about the Eras Tour shows he attends on his podcast, New Heights , there’s a good chance he’ll talk about his Paris experience soon.

Shortly after The Tortured Poets Department came out, a source spoke to Entertainment Tonight about how Kelce felt about Swift’s songs that seem to reference him. “Travis is so supportive of the entire album and loves that he is a part of Taylor’s story,” the insider said. “He is a Swiftie through and through, and is very proud of her.”

Senators Propose $32 Billion in Annual A.I. Spending but Defer Regulation

Their plan is the culmination of a yearlong listening tour on the dangers of the new technology.

  • Share full article

Martin Heinrich, Todd Young, Chuck Schumer and Mike Rounds sit facing one another in separate chairs in a Senate office.

By Cecilia Kang and David McCabe

Cecilia Kang and David McCabe cover technology policy.

A bipartisan group of senators released a long-awaited legislative plan for artificial intelligence on Wednesday, calling for billions in funding to propel American leadership in the technology while offering few details on regulations to address its risks.

In a 20-page document titled “Driving U.S. Innovation in Artificial Intelligence,” the Senate leader, Chuck Schumer, and three colleagues called for spending $32 billion annually by 2026 for government and private-sector research and development of the technology.

The lawmakers recommended creating a federal data privacy law and said they supported legislation, planned for introduction on Wednesday, that would prevent the use of realistic misleading technology known as deepfakes in election campaigns. But they said congressional committees and agencies should come up with regulations on A.I., including protections against health and financial discrimination, the elimination of jobs, and copyright violations caused by the technology.

“It’s very hard to do regulations because A.I. is changing too quickly,” Mr. Schumer, a New York Democrat, said in an interview. “We didn’t want to rush this.”

He designed the road map with two Republican senators, Mike Rounds of South Dakota and Todd Young of Indiana, and a fellow Democrat, Senator Martin Heinrich of New Mexico, after their yearlong listening tour to hear concerns about new generative A.I. technologies. Those tools, like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, can generate realistic and convincing images, videos, audio and text. Tech leaders have warned about the potential harms of A.I., including the obliteration of entire job categories, election interference, discrimination in housing and finance, and even the replacement of humankind.

The senators’ decision to delay A.I. regulation widens a gap between the United States and the European Union , which this year adopted a law that prohibits A.I.’s riskiest uses, including some facial recognition applications and tools that can manipulate behavior or discriminate. The European law requires transparency around how systems operate and what data they collect. Dozens of U.S. states have also proposed privacy and A.I. laws that would prohibit certain uses of the technology.

Outside of recent legislation mandating the sale or ban of the social media app TikTok, Congress hasn’t passed major tech legislation in years, despite multiple proposals.

“It’s disappointing because at this point we’ve missed several windows of opportunity to act while the rest of the world has,” said Amba Kak, a co-executive director of the nonprofit AI Now Institute and a former adviser on A.I. to the Federal Trade Commission.

Mr. Schumer’s efforts on A.I. legislation began in June with a series of high-profile forums that brought together tech leaders including Elon Musk of Tesla, Sundar Pichai of Google and Sam Altman of OpenAI.

(The New York Times has sued OpenAI and its partner, Microsoft, over use of the publication’s copyrighted works in A.I. development.)

Mr. Schumer said in the interview that through the forums, lawmakers had begun to understand the complexity of A.I. technologies and how expert agencies and congressional committees were best equipped to create regulations.

The legislative road map encourages greater federal investment in the growth of domestic research and development.

“This is sort of the American way — we are more entrepreneurial,” Mr. Schumer said in the interview, adding that the lawmakers hoped to make “innovation the North Star.”

In a separate briefing with reporters, he said the Senate was more likely to consider A.I. proposals piecemeal instead of in one large legislative package.

“What we’d expect is that we would have some bills that certainly pass the Senate and hopefully pass the House by the end of the year,” Mr. Schumer said. “It won’t cover the whole waterfront. There’s too much waterfront to cover, and things are changing so rapidly.”

He added that his staff had spoken with Speaker Mike Johnson’s office

Maya Wiley, president of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, participated in the first forum. She said that the closed-door meetings were “tech industry heavy” and that the report’s focus on promoting innovation overshadowed the real-world harms that could result from A.I. systems, noting that health and financial tools had already shown signs of discrimination against certain ethnic and racial groups.

Ms. Wiley has called for greater focus on the vetting of new products to make sure they are safe and operate without biases that can target certain communities.

“We should not assume that we don’t need additional rights,” she said.

meaning of whirlwind tour

Madison Marsh has had a whirlwind few months balancing her duties as a US Air Force officer and Miss America.

In January, the 22-year-old Arkansas native became the first active-duty US Air Force officer to compete in — and win — the national pageant competition.

Fort Smith homecoming

meaning of whirlwind tour

Marsh returned to her hometown of Fort Smith, Arkansas, over the weekend, welcomed with a homecoming parade. She also visited local schools — including her old middle and high school — to talk about her journey to the Miss America stage from those very halls.

"I mean, I've been saying all day that winning Miss America has never been about me," Marsh said, according to local news station KHBS . "It's been about the people that are in my community, who have backed me and the people that we can impact."

"And so, if I can hopefully open up the mind of another young woman or another young man to chase their dreams, to do something different, then it's a job well [done]," she continued. "And I'm so extremely lucky to have the position that I have."

Air Force officer, pageant winner, and now Harvard student

meaning of whirlwind tour

Over the span of a year, Marsh graduated from the US Air Force Academy with a degree in physics, was crowned Miss Colorado and later Miss America, and earned a full-ride scholarship to Harvard University.

Marsh earned her civilian pilot's license at 16, which inspired her to apply to USAFA. After she received her commission as a second lieutenant, she was selected for the flight school pipeline to become a military pilot.

However, Marsh decided to defer flight school last September to pursue a master's degree in public policy at Harvard Kennedy School.

Advocate for pancreatic cancer research

meaning of whirlwind tour

She also works as a graduate intern at Harvard Medical School , working with researchers at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute on the early detection of pancreatic cancer using artificial intelligence.

Her mother died from pancreatic cancer in 2018, just nine months after her diagnosis, which led Marsh to become an advocate for patient care and research through the Whitney Marsh Foundation, the nonprofit her family founded after her mom's death.

"We are leaps and bounds ahead of where we were when my mom was diagnosed five years ago, and I think that speaks volumes to the type of strides we're making across the entire pancreatic cancer community ," Marsh told Healthline in an interview.

A future in public policy

meaning of whirlwind tour

Marsh said she hopes to apply insights gained from her Harvard research toward shaping public policy at Capitol Hill that will better support patients.

"Now I understand the science side and [how to ask] medical professionals, 'What do you think needs to be done for patients, and how can we get that done through legislation?'" Marsh said at a United Service Organizations event on Capitol Hill in February. "Because through Harvard, even though I only got to do one semester there, I have learned that it is really easy to make bad policy."

"I think the best way to making good policy is by intimately understanding from the source — with patients — and intimately understanding that scientifically so we're enacting it properly," she added. "Now that I have all of those communities able to give me that knowledge, I'm really excited to get to use that piece to come forward here on the Hill and maybe get some things done."

Balancing active duty with pageant duty

meaning of whirlwind tour

Marsh is taking the rest of the year off from her degree and research to focus on her commitments with the Air Force and Miss America. To coincide with her pageant duties, the Air Force kept Marsh on active duty by assigning her to a public affairs and recruiting position.

"The Air Force has been really, really wonderful with me," Marsh said. "Basically, anytime I go and do Miss America events, I'm also giving back to the Air Force to ensure people know about the message of what it means to serve as 2nd Lt. Marsh — the different ways that they can get involved in the military, whether it be in the Air Force or other branches or different jobs."

Never the same day at work

meaning of whirlwind tour

The 22-year-old certainly has her hands full as she travels to a new city every few days to make a public appearance or attend events for both the Air Force and Miss America, some of which may vary greatly from each other.

"One event may include putting on my [Air Force] uniform to speak to classrooms of students about what it means to serve our country," she said, according to Dayton Daily News , "and 10 minutes later, I could be changing into something like this," referring her black jumper, high heels, tiara, and Miss America sash, "to attend a speaking event or the Super Bowl."

'Put me in coach!'

meaning of whirlwind tour

But Marsh's professional sports cameos aren't just limited to the NFL. Earlier this week, Marsh threw the first pitch at the Mets baseball game at Citi Field in New York.

"Put me in coach!" Marsh wrote in an Instagram post after the game. "Grateful for the military community and the team at the Mets that made this happen!"

A day in the life of an Air Force cadet

meaning of whirlwind tour

In February, Marsh and 27 fellow state delegates visited her alma mater, the US Air Force Academy, to tour the facilities. Delegates experienced a day in the life of an Air Force cadet , flying flight simulators, packing parachutes, and sitting in a TG-16A glider.

"My Miss America class was floored by the entire experience," Marsh said in an article published by USAFA's Strategic Communication office. "They truly got the whole cadet experience — dorm tours, flight simulators, hopping in planes, eating with cadets, and more. I really couldn't have thought of a better day to show them my home."

Mike Peterson, outreach division director for USAFA's Strategic Communications office, said he hopes the visit will inspire the Miss America delegates to promote the academy in their home states.

"We're hoping that one of the things that the delegates will talk about is how they participated in Miss America's homecoming at her college, the US Air Force Academy," Peterson said. "They are going to represent their states for the rest of their lives. We hope they will continue to spread the word about the Academy and their positive experience here."

'I serve as 2nd Lt. Marsh, and I serve as Miss America simultaneously'

meaning of whirlwind tour

By serving in both crown and uniform, Marsh said she hopes to empower young women to lead in any space, regardless of any gendered misconceptions.

"I hope that women are able to see that they can define their own role in the military — whether they want to take it in the more feminine path or not — knowing that they are empowered to make that decision," Marsh told DOD News in February. "I hope young girls can see that you can lead in the military, or you can lead in a board room, in the courthouse, in medical boardrooms — whatever it might be — and you can be taken seriously.

"Whether I'm in a crown and sash or whether I'm in my uniform, I serve as 2nd Lt. Marsh, and I serve as Miss America simultaneously, and they do not take away from one another."

And the winner of the 2024 Tiny Desk Contest is...

Headshot of Bobby Carter

Bobby Carter

The winner of the 2024 Tiny Desk Contest is The Philharmonik! Hailing from Sacramento, Calif., The Philharmonik is a producer, singer, rapper and multi-instrumentalist whose entry video, "What's It All Mean," floored this year's panel of judges.

And yet, crowning the Contest's 10th anniversary winner was no easy decision for our 15 judges; Tiny Desk series host and Contest judge Bobby Carter says this year of the Contest has been the most competitive yet. But the judges took their time reviewing nearly 7,000 entries from independent artists across the country, and are proud to share that The Philharmonik rose to the top.

In the second episode of Tiny Desk Contest Top Shelf , Tiny Desk alum and Contest judge Durand Bernarr featured The Philharmonik's entry, marveling at lead singer Christian Gates' brilliant commitment to the bit: his elaborate set-up, the way he stayed in character, his attitude and charisma.

"Everything in the video (the space, the attire, the characters we played, and the way we performed) was done with intention," Gates shared with us.

And in the YouTube comments on his video, Gates provided some insight into the creation of his video.

"The planning for this was insane," he wrote. "The Sacramento community literally lifted me up to help me see this vision through when I had not a single penny to my name ... There was a magic energy filling the space that I can't explain, but I had a plan ... This is a result of amazing teamwork and minds coming together."

"The desks weren't only in the video to solely fulfill the requirements of the Tiny Desk Contest, but to also amplify the message of 'What's it all mean?' and the existential question life poses to all people," Gates said. "I'm pretty sure most of us have pondered this question at a desk."

While the judges were impressed by The Philharmonik's setup, a visually elaborate video is certainly not a requirement to win the Tiny Desk Contest.

"If Christian and the band sat in front of a black backdrop and played 'What's It All Mean?,' they would still win the Contest," shares Carter. "It's a song and a message we all can connect to — and more importantly, they brought something fresh ."

NPR Music will welcome The Philharmonik — in addition to Gates, that's Moriah Wenzel (background vocals), Alicia Huff (background vocals), Courtney Miller (drums), Samuel Phelps (bass), Darius Upshaw (guitar), Connor Chavez (guitar), Jimmy Toor (flute) and Jeffery Archie (keys) — to the Tiny Desk very soon. (We're glad to see he's already got the "performing in an office space" thing down.) After that, the band will be headlining the Tiny Desk Contest On The Road Tour , playing alongside local Contest entrants in cities across the country.

You can hear more from The Philharmonik this afternoon on All Things Considered .
