Just got home from the Utah tour of the National Parks. Had a lot of fun, great group of folks to travel with, and tour guides Barb and David did an excellent job!  Professional, kept us busy, made sure everyone had a great experience. The sunset and star gazing at Arches was incredible!!  Thanks Marie for your awesome trip planning. Nice hotels, great beds, and great restaurants. Already have 3 long trips in mind and can hardly wait to go again!!!

Love, love, love the trip to New Orleans , Cajun country and plantations.  Just got back from the longest tour I have taken with Exploration Tours.  It exceeded my expectations of the all the places we visited, the tour guides along the way and accommodations.  Amber, our driver was amazing along with Marie who went the extra mile to make sure we were all taken care of and happy.  Loved the history and southern culture.

Just got back from my first ever, bus tour with Exploration Tours. Honestly, wasn’t sure how I would like it… but I sure had a great time. So nice to sit back, not do the driving and enjoy the amazing scenery from WA to Pasadena, CA. Made new friends and I was very impressed with the historical stops. So much depth to the tour and not those tourists traps! Happy to report I look forward to traveling with your company again.

The Most Anticipated Concert Tours Of Summer 2024

Uproxx authors

Although summertime is often associated with festival season, there are also plenty of artists doing their own tours. Those artists may have some festival appearances scattered throughout their itineraries, but the sunny weather is a solid incentive to open up the outdoor amphitheaters and arenas for some memorable live music, fest or not. From Missy Elliott’s first-ever headlining tour to the indie-rock fan’s dream combo of The National and The War On Drugs , check out the most anticipated summer concert tours of 2024.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by @21savage

The London-born, Atlanta-bred rapper 21 Savage has been touring North America since May 1, but he has several arena and amphitheater dates left on the American Dream Tour. That includes stops in Southern cities like Tampa, West Palm Beach, Birmingham, and, of course, Atlanta. He’ll be joined by J.I.D, Nardo Wick, and 21 Lil Harold.

Adrianne Lenker

pic.twitter.com/B5RSIpvieg — adrianne lenker (@AdrianneLenker) March 28, 2024

Over the years, Big Thief has become one of the most known names in contemporary indie rock. Frontwoman Adrianne Lenker , as her tour agenda showcases, has become wildly popular in her own right. Following her recent solo album, the sparse, somber Bright Future , Lenker brings opening act Twain along for a slew of dates, many of which are sold out, starting June 9 in Austin.

Bryson Tiller

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bryson (@brysontiller)

Louisville vocalist and songwriter Bryson Tiller recently released his self-titled album back in April. He is currently touring behind it, and it continues through nearly all of June. Along the way, Tiller will make stops in cities like Nashville, Minneapolis, New York, Atlanta, and more.

ethel cain – the childish behavior tour LA / NY pic.twitter.com/BgpHnmIGcV — 🏁 (@concertleaks) December 5, 2023

Since her 2022 debut album, the dark, sprawling Preacher’s Daughter , Ethel Cain has steadily ascended through the ranks to become a pillar of indie-pop. Cain has hinted at new music here and there, but for now, she’s going to keep touring. That resumes with a North American tour this month following a slate of European dates. Her new schedule includes appearances at Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Summerfest, Hinterland, and others.

Future / Metro Boomin

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Young Metro 3 Times 💔 (@metroboomin)

We Still Don’t Trust You unwittingly became the catalyst for the most fruitful hip-hop beef in recent memory when Kendrick Lamar dissed Drake and J. Cole during his guest verse on “Like That.” Future and Metro Boomin themselves have mostly stayed out of it — relatively, at least. After all, they do have a massive tour to focus on. The duo kicks things off in Kansas City on July 30 and wraps it up in Vancouver on Sept. 9.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Green Day (@greenday)

The Saviors Tour will travel across the globe, in which Bay Area pop-punk trio Green Day will perform their most iconic albums, 1994’s Dookie and 2004’s American Idiot , in full to respectively celebrate their 30th and 20th anniversaries. For select dates, they’ll bring along Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid, and The Linda Lindas.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by ❕WUNNA❕🥷🏻✝️ (@gunna)

Gunna is a fixture of Atlanta rap, and he’s taking that idiosyncratic ATL style all over North America plus a small handful of European dates for The Bittersweet Tour. With opener Flo Milli, the YSL affiliate will visit cities like Miami, Orlando, and, obviously, Atlanta.

Janet Jackson

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Janet Jackson (@janetjackson)

The queen of new jack swing, Janet Jackson, will embark on a large North American tour starting June 4 in Palm Desert, California. For last year’s tour, she brought Ludacris along as her opener, and this year, she’s bringing St. Louis rapper Nelly. The Together Again Tour will make stops in Anaheim, Salt Lake City, Denver, St. Paul, and plenty more cities.

Jhené Aiko announces tour dates for ‘The Magic Hour Tour.’ She will be joined by Coi Leray, Tink, UMI, and Kiana Ledé. pic.twitter.com/WgAFyWlluF — Pop Crave (@PopCrave) March 26, 2024

From the middle of June to the end of August, Los Angeles R&B mainstay Jhené Aiko will tour North American arenas with openers Coi Leray, Tink, and Umi in tow. It kicks off at Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena on June 19 and wraps up at Columbus’ Nationwide Arena on Aug. 22.

Justin Timberlake

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Justin Timberlake (@justintimberlake)

Earlier this year, Justin Timberlake released Everything I Thought It Was , his first studio album since 2018’s folk-tinged Man Of The Woods . To promote the new record, he’s currently on The Forget Tomorrow World Tour. It includes stops in cities like Tulsa, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, and many more.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Khruangbin (@khruangbin)

The Houston instrumental trio Khruangbin recently released A LA SALA , an album that leans into the group’s psych-pop proclivities. They’re touring behind it all summer in both Europe and North America, and joining them will be openers Arooj Aftab, Men I Trust, John Carroll Kirby, and Peter Cat Recording Co.

Lizzy McAlpine

View this post on Instagram A post shared by lizzy (@lizzymcalpine)

Back in April, singer and songwriter Lizzy McAlpine released her third studio album, Older . She’s celebrating its release with a summer tour that takes her all the way from Washington, D.C. to Sydney, Australia and back to the States. McAlpine has a busy summer ahead of her, but that gives you plenty of chances to catch her show.

Megan Thee Stallion

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Megan Thee Stallion (@theestallion)

Houston rapper Megan Thee Stallion is bringing the Hot Girl Summer Tour all over the globe. It’s currently underway, having stopped at cities like Minneapolis and Baltimore and will soon head to places like New Orleans, Dallas, and Meg’s very own Houston. Joining her will be Memphis rapper GloRilla.

Missy Elliott

It’s hard to believe that someone as influential as Missy Elliott has never done her own headlining tour before. That is, until now. Alongside friends like Busta Rhymes, Timbaland, and Ciara, The Out Of This World Tour will start on July 4 in Vancouver and conclude on Aug. 22 in Rosemont, Illinois, right near the Chicago O’Hare International Airport. This is certainly a show you won’t want to miss.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by @mitskileaks

Having wrapped up a slew of European dates, Mitski is headed back to the States in August to tour behind last year’s excellent The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We . She’ll usually be doing multiple nights at sizable theaters, such as three nights at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre and two nights at Detroit’s Masonic Temple Theatre. Joining her will be openers Arlo Parks, Lamp, Laufey, Alvvays, Wyatt Flores, Sharon Van Etten, and Sierra Ferrell, depending on the date.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by ODESZA (@odesza)

Odesza is a go-to festival headliner for many booking agents, and it’s easy to understand why. Their seismic strain of EDM is perfect for big fields and arenas alike. They embark on The Last Goodbye Finale Tour with openers Big Boi, Bob Moses, and more in tow, performing multiple nights at Los Angeles’ BMO Stadium, Berkeley’s Greek Theatre, and NYC’s Madison Square Garden along the way, as well as a hometown-adjacent run at The Gorge.

Olivia Rodrigo

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Olivia Rodrigo (@oliviarodrigo)

If you managed to secure tickets to Olivia Rodrigo’s highly anticipated arena tour for her sophomore album, Guts , then count yourself lucky, as it’s completely sold out. She’ll spend June touring Europe before she returns to the U.S. with drum and bass/indie pop enthusiast PinkPantheress in July.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Pearl Jam (@pearljam)

Eddie Vedder and co. have just released Dark Matter , their first album since 2020’s ill-timed Gigaton . To support the new record, they’ll perform all across the globe; the tour has currently taken them to Europe, and they’ll head back to the U.S. toward the end of August with opener Glen Hansard.

She’ll be performing in various amphitheaters with opening act Presley Regier. Her latest string of dates kicks off in her hometown of Calgary on July 5 and wraps up in New York on Aug. 22.

Taylor Swift

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Taylor Swift (@taylorswift)

Cultural behemoth Taylor Swift is ready to stimulate some more local economies. The Eras Tour continues through Europe with openers Paramore all the way through late August. Fresh off the release of the messy, sprawling The Tortured Poets Department , 2024’s iteration of the tour now merges the Folklore and Evermore eras into one. But it also features a new set solely dedicated to TTPD .

The National / The War On Drugs

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The National (@thenational)

Indie dads rejoice! The National and The War On Drugs, as you’d expect, have a lot of overlap in terms of fandom. They’re both massive, beloved indie rock groups that always put on a spectacular show. Their co-headlining tour, dubbed the Zen Diagram Tour , will take them all over North American amphitheaters this September. Joining them is opener Lucius. Ahead of that, The National have a ton of dates this summer as they weave across Europe.

The Rolling Stones

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Rolling Stones (@therollingstones)

Last year, The Rolling Stones put out their first studio album in seven years, Hackney Diamonds . Although it won’t be the same without core drummer Charlie Watts, Mick Jagger and the gang still put on an excellent show. They’ll tour all over stadiums, including stops in Chicago, Atlanta, Denver, and more.

Tomorrow X Together

View this post on Instagram A post shared by TOMORROW X TOGETHER OFFICIAL (@txt_bighit)

K-pop boy band Tomorrow X Together have a few more tour dates left to play this summer. Whereas May took them primarily to cities on the West Coast, such as Los Angeles, Tacoma, and Oakland, this month’s stops include Rosemont, Washington D.C., and New York City.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Usher (@usher)

As this year’s Super Bowl Halftime Show demonstrated, Usher is a one-of-a-kind performer. Now that he has finished his Las Vegas residency, he’ll kick off a run of sold-out arena dates starting with three nights in his hometown, Atlanta, on Aug. 14. It’ll run all the way through the end of November, with the three final U.S. dates in Houston.

Vampire Weekend

Following a few festival sets in May, indie-rock outfit Vampire Weekend will play North American arenas and outdoor theaters all summer long. Toyota plots an all-electric Highlander SUV, will the Tundra and Tacoma be next?

Avatar for Peter Johnson

After a slow start, Toyota is looking to shake things up with its next round of electric cars. Toyota’s second best-selling SUV in the US, the Toyota Highlander, is going fully electric. It could be followed by other familiar names like the Tacoma and Tundra.

The Japanese automaker has been notoriously slow in transitioning to fully electric vehicles. As of right now, Toyota only offers two EVs in the US: the bZ4X and Lexus RZ. And that’s it for at least another two years.

Toyota, including Lexus, sold over 565,000 vehicles in the US in the first three months of 2024. Of them, only 3,500 were fully electric, or 0.6% of Toyota’s total sales.

Meanwhile, many automakers are already at double-digit or 100%, EV sales share at this point. For example, Rivian, which delivered its first vehicle in October 2021, handed over 13,588 EVs in Q1 .

Despite falling behind, Toyota has stuck to its hybrid strategy, including hybrids, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), battery electric vehicles (EVs), and fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs).

To avoid falling further behind, Toyota is promising new EVs powered by advanced batteries with new tech and manufacturing practices to cut costs and improve efficiency.

Toyota to launch electric Highlander SUV in the US

“We have always been committed to building BEVs,” David Christ, GM of Toyota’s US Division, told CarBuzz during the 2025 4Runner debut.

Christ added, “You’re going to see more BEVs from us in the future.” This will include a fully electric Toyota Highlander SUV.

Toyota revealed it would build a three-row electric SUV at its Georgetown, KY facility as its first US-assembled EV last May. In February, Toyota invested an additional $1.3 billion into the facility to prepare it for EV production.

Toyota-electric-Highlander

According to CarBuzz , this will be an electric version of its popular Highlander SUV. Lexus is also set for a three-row electric SUV , which could go by the name “TZ,” according to a trademark filing.

Further out, Toyota is looking at an electric compact pickup and EV-version for its mid-size Tacoma. However, it will depend on the market.

Toyota-EPU-Maverick

An electric full-size Tundra pickup is also in the works, but Toyota is watching rivals like the Ford Lightning , Rivian R1T, and Tesla Cybertruck to weigh demand.

First, Toyota will expand its PHEV line-up. “We’re going to expand plug-in availability throughout the line-up fairly quickly,” Christ explained. New Toyota PHEVs could include a Sequoia SUV, Tundra, and Tacoma.

Electrek’s Take

Toyota sold over 169,500 Highlander SUVs in the US in 2023 , its second best-selling SUV behind the RAV4. It only makes sense for an all-electric version.

Meanwhile, several larger electric SUVs are already climbing the sales charts in the US. Rivian’s R1S was the fourth best-selling EV in the US last year. Kia sold over 4,000 units of its first three-row electric SUV, the EV9, in Q1, which launched in December.

Top comment by Swallow_Doretti

Toyota deserves every ounce of skepticism they get around any plug-in announcement, considering their sole EV entry is a glorified compliance car. And while they tout PHEVs, the sheer lack of inventory of models like the RAV4 Prime several years after launch shows they're not serious about that technology, either. And all that is before their ongoing global lobbying against stricter emissions standards is factored in.

On the other hand, Ford is pushing back production of its larger SUV as it develops a new low-cost EV platform.

The first models are expected to be a smaller electric pickup and SUV. Due out in 2026, Ford’s new EV is expected to start at around $25,000.

By 2026, an electric Toyota Highlander may not seem so special, with so many automakers planning to launch new EVs by then (or release 2nd and 3rd gen models).

One of the biggest takeaways from the report is that Toyota may drop the “bZ” naming system and focus on popular models like the Highlander or Tundra.

College of Aviation

From kent (wa) to kalamazoo (mi), jennifer nguyen’s medallion journey takes flight.

WMU Aviation Flight and Management Student Jennifer Nguyen

Medallion Scholarship recipient, Jennifer Nguyen and the College of Aviation Dean, Dr. Raymond Thompson at the 2023 Medallion Induction Ceremony

Put yourself in Jennifer Nguyen’s flight shoes.

Her grandparents and immediate family were on the wrong side of the Vietnam War, which forced many of their peers to leave the home country. . .or else.

A fractionalized past.  An in-doubt present. No set-in-stone plans and no immediate future.  Just exist, and look for a new place to plant roots.

That’s kind of how Nguyen eventually ended up at Western Michigan University as a double major in aviation flight science and aviation management and operations.  She never featured a rock-centered eye on an aviation career — just an awareness that something had to, or was going to, happen.

And it did.  And while where it is happening is not as long a journey — from Southeast Asia to Kent, Wash., where her parents eventually settled — the distance from the Pacific Northwest to Kalamazoo, Mich., isn’t a simple walk around the block.

Request College of Aviation Information

tacoma tours

Nguyen and her family at the Christmas lights in Everett, Wash. (Sister: Jessica, Mom: Van Thanh, Dad: Hai, and Jennifer)

Another amazing facet of her story is — what would have happened to Nguyen if she had done what a lot of us do — trash an e-mail without opening it up.  More about that later.

Now a junior in the College of Aviation, Nguyen grew up in a 136,000-strong community that is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metroplex in King County in the northwest sector of the state.

“My grandfather, Canh Tran, was a fighter pilot in the South Vietnam Air Force working with the United States during the Vietnam War,” she says.  “My family and relatives immigrated to the United States in the 1990s and 2000s.

“My father, Hai Nguyen, and my uncles had dreams of being pilots when they were younger,” she says, “but were forced to put their ambitions behind them.  Due to the reality of coming to America for its opportunities and the shared hope of creating better lives for themselves and their families, they scrambled to find work, eventually with Boeing.”

tacoma tours

Nguyen, with a grandfather pilot and her folks working for Boeing, early on still answered “software engineer” when asked about her career plans — a pretty-good gig.  “But, after researching that pathway and taking some classes,” she says, “I realized that I had no passion for that.  I had always found flying to be an appealing dream that I did not allow myself to chase.”

Because she was dual enrolled at Kentridge High School and Green River College, her K-12 diploma, and an associate-of-arts degree came at the same time in June of 2023.

“I didn’t allow myself to explore aviation as a career in high school,” she says, “because I had a major fear of failing,” a sensation that her grandparents might have felt as they pondered what to do after their nation’s war-torn years.   That began to change when Nguyen took a discovery flight in September of her senior year in 2022.

tacoma tours

Nguyen during her graduation from Green River College with highest honors and an Associate in Arts

While she sampled what a career in the skies might feel like at the region’s Museum of Flight, she first decided to focus on earning her associate’s degree.  “I was afraid and a bit intimidated to fully stick to making aviation my education focus,” she says, “because I didn’t think it was a viable option for me.”

That started to crystalize when, as a senior at Kentridge, she became a student member of Women in Aviation International and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.”  Next came a course in aviation history and careers at Green River.

Then came an internship at the Port of Seattle.  She remembers walking on one of the runways with fellow interns “where I was able to watch a bunch of planes taking off over me.  Though I was just an intern who was there to pick up litter, it was cool to be close to planes taking off and landing.”  In other words, this could be “cool” and far more exciting than designing software.  Plus, she did much more than pick up litter during that internship.

Taking a break to watch airplanes during her volunteering experience at the SeaTac airport removing FOD (foreign object debris)

“I think I realized that life was too short not to take a shot at something I once thought was unattainable,” she says.  “I didn’t see many Asian women pursuing a career as a pilot.  Most of my friends were interested in engineering or the medical field.  They wanted to attend the same university near home.  I too wanted to hold on to what was comfortable.”

The metamorphosis was almost complete.  “I wanted to chase my passion and if that meant moving across the country from family and friends, so be it,” Nguyen says.  “Again, you may only get one shot in life.”

Even though she never really said it out loud, that shot was to become a pilot.  Which led to enrolling in aviation-related courses, that discovery flight, and the early stages of flight training.  The yearning-for-more seed was planted.

Still there was a bit of reticence.  Should she play it safe and stay home?  That was the comfortable thing to do, even if it meant a less-than-inspiring career.  Her research led to gathering information about the WMU College of Aviation and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, where she was accepted for admission.

As part of her introduction to what Western had to offer, she learned about the Medallion program, one of the largest merit-based scholarship opportunities in the nation that could be valued at as much as $91,100 over a four-year period.  Plus, Western had a vibrant collection of RSOs (registered student organizations) that could provide “a sense of community” for her.  Nguyen would eventually learn that the College of Aviation itself is a valued community for students.

tacoma tours

Fellow Medallion recipient, Makenzie Russel and Nguyen during a Lee Honors practice event, where they demonstrate clean energy using a bike generator to power a smoothie machine

But all of this was still up in the air. . .until fate intervened.

“When I got an e-mail from the Lee Honors College to schedule an interview for the Medallion Scholarship,” she says, “I initially ignored it because I thought it was a scam.  Fortunately, it was followed by a second e-mail, which I did open, and I decided to take a chance.  I bragged to my parents about getting interviewed for a scholarship, but I never thought I would be offered one.”

The Nguyen Sisters, Jessica and Jennifer, at the famous Seattle Pike Place Market

That development came her way while Nguyen was volunteering at a free outdoor grocery market.  “I received a call from a strange number,” she says, “and didn’t pick it up.  The voicemail was from a Western representative that said I had received the scholarship.  I was just dumbfounded.  To this day, it is still crazy to me that if I had not replied to that e-mail, my life’s trajectory would be completely different.”

That trajectory has brought Nguyen to feel at home and welcomed.”  And this comes from a person who “used to keep to myself most of the time.”

The connectivity evolves from her membership and leadership roles in Western’s chapters of Women in Aviation, the Professional Asian Pilots Association, and Sigma Psi Zeta, a services-oriented sorority for students of her heritage.  Her extra-curricular activities are all part of Nguyen pushing herself out of her “comfort zones.”

Her sought-after “accomplishment” zones are earning the necessary certificates, licenses and hours in the air to become a certified flight instructor for Western and eventually moving up the line to serve as a pilot for Delta Air Lines.

Not bad for a never-wanna-be software engineer.
