When the title of a new TV series begins with “Star Trek,” it’s natural to be intimidated. The Trek franchise has a well-earned reputation for having a dense canon, which has been built up over the course of 55 years and more than 800 canonical installments. It’s possible to start any individual series and eventually get your bearings, but many of them aren’t terribly welcoming unless you’ve absorbed the prerequisite mythology, either directly or through cultural osmosis. Star Trek: Prodigy , the new animated series that premiered Oct. 28 on Paramount Plus, fully breaks from this trend, presenting Star Trek in an entirely new way, and becoming the most accessible jumping-on point for the franchise since J.J. Abrams’ 2009 film reboot.

Most Star Trek spin-offs presume a level of pre-existing engagement in the franchise, and use their first episodes not to sell viewers on Star Trek , but to sell them on this Star Trek . They’re in the business of iteration and contrast, of proving that this incarnation has something sufficiently different in store. For 1987’s The Next Generation , the very premise of doing Star Trek without familiar characters Kirk and Spock was novel enough to differentiate the series. Deep Space Nine and Voyager are distinguished by their placement in space, Enterprise and Discovery by their placement in time, Picard and Lower Decks by their vastly different approaches to the legacy of The Next Generation . Every series has developed its own identity, but each is defined from the outset by its relationship to what’s come before.

But the double-sized premiere of Prodigy seems to be entirely in its own lane, refreshingly unconcerned with previous Star Trek series until two minutes before the closing credits. The first episode, “Lost and Found,” takes place on the mining colony asteroid Tars Lamora, where teenage prisoner Dal R’El (voiced by Brett Gray) is making his umpteenth unsuccessful escape attempt. Over the course of this opening hour, we see Dal assemble a ragtag group of fellow enslaved workers to hijack an advanced derelict starship that’s buried within a crevice of the asteroid.

Anyone even vaguely familiar with Star Trek will recognize this ship, the USS Protostar, as having all the aesthetic markers of a Starfleet vessel. Dal and his companions, however, do not — in fact, they’ve never heard of Starfleet or the United Federation of Planets that it serves. To them, it’s just a way out of bondage. The fact that it’s also their gateway into a diverse space utopia only sweetens the deal. They’re in the middle of their own space adventure, only to discover at the last minute that they’re on Star Trek , whatever that is.

Two characters from Star Trek: Prodigy staring each other in the eyes

Shifting the perspective of the characters from seasoned professionals coping with new wrinkles to complete outsiders learning the ropes was a deliberate decision made by series creators Kevin and Dan Hageman ( Trollhunters, LEGO’s Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu ), as they explained at New York Comic Con earlier this month. Star Trek head honcho Alex Kurtzman tasked them with devising an entry point through which young, uninitiated viewers might find their way into Star Trek , and determined that the best way to do that would be via characters who would be introduced to it themselves.

Exploring the Star Trek canon is typically easier with a guide, and the crew of the Protostar have one of their own — a holographic training program in the likeness of Star Trek: Voyager ’s Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew). Introduced at the end of “Lost and Found,” Hologram Janeway is the only element that places the episode in a particular place or time in the Star Trek universe.

Prodigy has a few other, looser ties to the franchise’s past. Three members of the main ensemble represent races from previous Star Trek works, but each is more obscure than the last. Jankom Pog (Jason Mantzoukas) is a Tellarite, the least recognizable of the Federation’s four founding species (alongside Humans, Vulcans, and those blue guys with the antennae, the Andorians). Zero (Angus Imrie) is a Medusan, a non-corporeal entity whose people haven’t been heard from since the 1968 episode which introduced them. Rok-Tahk (Rylee Alazraqui) is a Brikar, a species that originates in Peter David’s tie-in novels from the 1990s, and has never been depicted on screen before. Since even the established pieces of lore are plucked from obscurity, viewers for whom “Lost and Found” is their very first Star Trek aren’t missing anything. At least for now, dyed-in-the-wool Trekkies have almost no advantage over the new kids.

This distance from the larger Star Trek universe won’t last, and it’s not meant to. The Hagemans have already indicated that the Protostar’s course will take them closer to Federation space, and that they’ll encounter more familiar characters and cultures over time. This doesn’t have to make the series any less approachable to new viewers. As the young crew journeys in from the outskirts, hopefully new fans can be gradually acclimatized. Success would mean that a young viewer can explore the wider Star Trek library with Prodigy as their compass, not their homework agenda.

The first episode of Star Trek: Prodigy’s 10-episode opening season is now streaming on Paramount Plus, with new episodes arriving on Thursdays.

The medusans first appeared in a classic star trek episode, how star trek: prodigy separated zero from the medusan people, the medusans were created as a nod to greek history, prodigy's zero makes star trek's medusans much more interesting.

The following contains spoilers for Star Trek: Prodigy , Season 1, now streaming on Netflix.

After being pulled off of Paramount+, Star Trek: Prodigy was saved by Netflix after a vigorous fan campaign. The animated series is aimed primarily at children with an all-ages appeal, and it introduces a number of new characters and species to Gene Roddenberry's universe. The cast of characters on Star Trek: Prodigy is a wonderful mix of both new and familiar characters. The connections to the past -- both big and small -- can lead new viewers to discover the legacy stories that have helped Star Trek continue for almost 60 years.

Prodigy also provides fun Easter egg moments for longtime fans watching the series with or without children. One of those fun Easter eggs happens to be Zero. In Prodigy , Zero is one of the more unique alien species and is actually from a race of energy beings called Medusans, which originally appeared in Star Trek: The Original Series . In fact, Prodigy helps define one of Star Trek 's most interesting alien species. Zero looks very different, particularly because they are encased in a metal suit. Yet, the colorful energy swirl inside is the character's true form. Why they have to hide themselves and how that affects the story is an example of how Prodigy seamlessly blends Star Trek lore with their original creations.

Who Is Hologram Janeway on Star Trek: Prodigy, and Can She Come Back?

Holographic Kathryn Janeway is one of the most important characters in Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1, but who is she and will she be back in the future?

The third season of Star Trek: The Original Series was its last , and most fans agree it is also the show's weakest. The seventh episode of that final season, "Is There No Truth in Beauty," is a classic morality play. The entire story takes place on the USS Enterprise which was meant to keep the production budget manageable. Yet, "Is There No Truth in Beauty" required some costly visual effects that defined Zero's appearance. As one of the more cerebral stories in The Original Series , scenes that were meant to add moments of action feel out of place.

Dr. Miranda Jones is a human telepath who uses her mental connection with others to see. She boards the Enterprise with Federation engineer Larry Marvick and Kollos, a Medusan ambassador. They are an advanced race that -- while not part of the Federation -- are interested in a possible alliance. Medusans like Kollos and Zero are energy beings whose true forms cause "madness" in those who look at them. Humans like Marvick and Jones are the most at risk, as they are unable to look Medusans at all. Other species like the Vulcans or Kazon can view them through a red visor.

After a mind-meld with Kollos, Spock accidentally looks at his true form and only the telepathic Jones can save him. The episode is meant to examine the idea of beauty and ugliness. The characters say the effect the Medusans have on people is because they are "so ugly." Jones, however, is seen as beautiful, until she refuses to help Spock because of jealousy. Kollos is depicted as flashing, chaotic lights, but throughout the story, they are proven to be a compassionate and empathetic being. Zero lives up to that reputation.

Star Trek: Prodigy Showrunners Tease More Crossovers With Other Trek Shows

Kevin and Dan Hageman discuss the effectiveness of Star Trek "deep cuts" and how Star Trek: Prodigy might adapt its characters in live-action one day.

Zero is a crucial member of the Star Trek: Prodigy team, and the whole reason the disparate group got together in the first place. The series takes place in the Delta Quadrant, which is one reason Prodigy is closely tied to Star Trek: Voyager . It's the same part of the galaxy that the Voyager crew was lost in for seven years, trying to get home. This is something Zero can relate to, as they were taken by Kazon raiders to sell to the Diviner, who was searching for the USS Protostar .

A crew of Medusan explorers traveled to the Delta Quandrant and were exploring a planet where Voyager villains the Kazon laid a trap. Other than Zero, who was captured and secured in a metal box like the one used in Star Trek: The Original Series , the rest of the Medusan explorers got away. Zero was taken to the Diviner, who forced the people the Kazon kidnapped to mine the planet in search of the lost vessel. He found another use for Zero, however. The Diviner would force the workers that he dubbed "the unwanted" to look on the Medusan form as a sadistic form of control.

This naturally traumatized Zero, who eventually escaped their prison and constructed their metal suit. Zero was able to telepathically connect with Dal and the other eventual Protostar crewmembers. Together they escaped captivity and, eventually, traveled to the Federation with the intention of joining Starfleet . Zero doesn't seem to want to reunite with their fellow Medusans, perhaps because of guilt they feel for the harm they caused.

REVIEW: Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1, Part 2 Blu-ray Brings the Protostar Crew to Life

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1, Part 2 arrives on Blu-ray and brings the animated characters from the Paramount+ series to life in new and exciting ways.

The creator of the Medusans was Jean Lissette Aroeste, a librarian at Harvard and UCLA. She was a massive Star Trek fan and pitched the story as a freelancer with no prior TV writing experience. It came at a tumultuous time for the series, as Gene Roddenberry had just stepped away as showrunner after a fight with NBC. Still, he -- along with script editor Arthur H. Singer and his replacement as producer Fred Freiberger -- all did rewrites on the script to make it fit the show and budget, according to These Are the Voyages - TOS: Season Three by Marc Cushman.

Aroeste originally wanted to call Kollos's species "gorgons" but that was a term used in another Star Trek episode. The writers couldn't even agree on a spelling of "Medusan," which was "Mendeusan" and "Medeusan" at various stages of production . Aroeste wanted the action to be VFX-based to show the mental turmoil Spock was experiencing. Budget prevented that from happening, but notes from NBC executives forced the writers to add more action and fight scenes.

At one point, Leonard Nimoy refused to shoot some scenes as written and, according to These Are the Voyages , rewrote some of Spock's dialogue with William Shatner against Writer's Guild rules. Director Ralph Senesky even feuded with Freiberger over the final cut of the episode, for what he called "schlock, horror cuts." That this episode came together at all is a miracle. Yet, Star Trek: Prodigy 's writers were able to use a species introduced in one of the most divisive (behind the scenes) episodes to create one of the show's best characters.

How Star Trek: Prodigy Improved a Discarded Deep Space Nine Premise

One of the most beautiful, touching episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy shared a foundational idea with a discarded episode premise from Deep Space Nine.

The story that first introduced the Medusans was the result of the work of many different artists, who didn't always agree. Add to this the hundreds of writers, directors and other artists who've added to Star Trek over the decades, and it's a wonder any of it makes sense at all. Yet, that's what makes this storytelling universe so special. Given the problems with "Is There No Truth In Beauty?", it should be one of The Original Series episodes best forgotten . Still, it introduces Kollos as an allegory about preconception, tolerance and diversity.

Star Trek: Prodigy co-creators Kevin and Dan Hageman were able to draw from it to create a powerful new character. Instead of focusing on other species' fear of the true Medusan form, Zero's story is about how it affects them. Zero's guilt at how the Diviner used them to hurt others drives the character. Later, when Gwyndala is hurt by accidentally seeing Zero, they are committed to helping her heal. At no point does the crew ever blame or judge Zero, thereby building on the lesson Aroeste and the others tried to teach audiences in 1969.

This is what makes even the "bad" Star Trek stories so important to the larger universe. Instead of seeming scattered or ill-conceived, the storytellers are able to match disparate narrative elements as if they were meant to fit together. Zero didn't have to be a Medusan, an all-but forgotten species. Yet, because they are, their story is tied more deeply to the Star Trek universe and more powerful for it.

Star Trek: The Original Series is streaming on Paramount+ and Pluto TV, while Star Trek: Prodigy is streaming on Netflix, with Season 2 expected in 2024.

Zero was a Medusan who lived during the late 24th century . Like other Medusans, Zero was an energy-based non-corporeal lifeform , and as such, they identified as genderless , as they lacked a body .

As a Medusan, Zero possessed telepathic powers, often stating what others were thinking with or without their permission. They also had their species' natural aptitude for navigation , though until they found the Protostar , they had never piloted a starship before. ( PRO : " Lost and Found ")

Biography [ ]

Early history [ ].

Part of a group of Medusans who left their homeworld long before the 24th century to explore the galaxy , Zero was kidnapped from their hive mind by Kazon slavers as they explored a planet . ( PRO : " Preludes ")

Zero was bought by The Diviner and held at the Tars Lamora prison colony , where other slaves were forced to look upon the Medusan unprotected to brainwash them. Zero managed to escape and fashion a makeshift containment suit for themselves to safely interact with corporeal lifeforms . They became a rebel fighter known as "Fugitive Zero". In 2383 , Zero helped fellow prisoner Dal R'El take possession of the recently-discovered USS Protostar . ( PRO : " Kobayashi ", " Lost and Found ")

USS Protostar [ ]

When the crew returned to Tars Lamora to liberate the other prisoners, In order to keep the Diviner from hurting anyone again, Zero revealed themselves to The Diviner, thus driving him mad. Unfortunately, Gwyndala caught a glimpse of Zero's reflection and was left in a near-catatonic state. Fortunately, Zero was able to heal Gwyn, although she was unable remember her last conversation with her father. ( PRO : " A Moral Star, Part 2 ")

Guilt-ridden over what they'd almost done to Gwyn, Zero made it their mission to help her recover her lost memories. Though Gwyn did experience flashbacks, the details of the last conversation she had with her father remained elusive. Later, when the crew arrived at Federation outpost CR-721 , Zero took Gwyn to the station's sickbay which they believed would have better equipment. After placing Gwyn into a biobed , Zero stepped out. At that precise moment, the Diviner's weapon was activated, and the station’s systems turned against itself, with multiple systems malfunctioning, including the doors to sickbay. Momentarily trapped in her biobed, which was filling with water, Gwyn caught some glimpses of memory, and was able to cut herself loose using her heirloom. When Zero was finally able to enter the room, Gwyn announced that she remembered everything – most importantly the devastating weapon Living construct hidden onboard the Protostar . ( PRO : " Asylum ")

Though the crew located the Diviner's weapon, they couldn't find a way to disarm it. Not long after, they came across a dormant Borg cube . Though Hologram Janeway strongly advised them to leave the area, citing how dangerous the Borg were, the crew decided that, since the Borg had accumulated knowledge from across the galaxy – they might have information on how to disarm the weapon. When the crew failed to get information directly from the dormant cube's vinculum , Zero volunteered to be assimilated since Medusans, like Borg, were of a hive mind. Though initially unable to resist the lure of assimilation , they were saved when Gwyn reminded them that they were already a part of a collective on the Protostar . Back on the ship, Zero reported that they did learn something about the weapon. It was called a living construct and could neither be deactivated or removed. ( PRO : " Let Sleeping Borg Lie ")

Zero served as medical officer again when Dal fell victim to the same mysterious curse that the Enderprizians warned them about. Zero attempted to find a cure for this mysterious disease but was limited since they didn't know exactly what they were dealing with. After investigating the gallows , the crew informed Zero that toxic runoff was the cause of the illness plaguing Dal and the village. Armed with this information, Zero was quickly able to synthesize a cure. ( PRO : " All the World's a Stage ")

Eventually, thanks to the Living construct, the Protostar crew no longer had control of the ship and was headed for the heart of Federation space, where it was met by an armada of Starfleet vessels. When Starfleet vessels, contaminated by the living construct, began attacking one another, Dal decided that the only solution was to destroy the Protostar . When Pog stated that that would destroy everything in this solar system, Rok countered that it wouldn't if they set the ship to explode as it was going into proto-drive . Unfortunately, since the self-destruct was off-line, the core would need to be detonated manually. Dal volunteered to go down with the ship. but Holo Janeway declared that she should be the one to stay behind.

As Zero and the others escaped on a bare-bones shuttle that Rok built using the vehicle replicator , the Protostar destroyed itself in mid-jump, disabling the living construct.

A month later, the Protostar crew made it to Starfleet Headquarters on Earth . where they found themselves in front of a Starfleet tribunal where they faced various criminal charges, such as stealing a Federation starship. Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway argued on their behalf that the kids did everything in in an effort to warn Starfleet. Thanks to the admiral's impassioned speech, all criminal charges were dropped and, although they weren't allowed immediate entrance into Starfleet Academy as they hoped, the crew, with the exception of Gwyn, who'd decided to go to Solum to try to unite her people, were permitted to serve under the admiral as warrant officers -in-training. Starfleet officers built a new containment suit for Zero to replace the original they had made. ( PRO : " Supernova, Part 2 ")

Personal Interests [ ]

Zero frequently enjoyed a mystery holodeck program , set in a lighthouse , which begins each time with them receiving a letter at midnight. The letter would reveal the object of the mystery and provide the first clue towards its discovery. They would then be lead on series of puzzles that must be solved in order to solve the mystery. According to their official Nickelodeon description:

Zero is a Medusan: a species of body-less, genderless, energy-based lifeforms whose true appearance can drive anyone insane. To protect everyone, Zero made a containment suit from castoff materials. Curious and intelligent, Zero is a telepath who just wants to help those around them. Before teaming up with the U.S.S. Protostar crew, the Diviner held Zero against their will to be used as a weapon, but Zero escaped and vowed to do no more harm. [1]

Overview [ ]

The Medusans were highly intelligent nonphysical beings composed of electromagnetic energy. They demonstrated highly advanced scientific capabilities and had telepathic powers that were more advanced than any other race within the United Federation of Planets . When necessary, a Medusan was capable of traveling onboard a Federation starship , though this required them to be within highly specialized electromagnetic containers. There was a great deal of danger in such cases, as whilst their mental thoughts were sublime, their physical appearance was so hideous to humanoids that they would drive them insane. Special viewers were required by individuals who sought to see a Medusan outside their protective containers as they filtered out the dangerous frequencies, thus lessening the potential damage. ( TOS episode : " Is There in Truth No Beauty? ")

The Medusans were expert starship navigators and had developed interstellar navigation into a fine art, which was attributed to their unique sensory system. One theory suggested that the race was capable of electromagnetically identifying as well as locking onto guide stars, even those that were beyond deep sensor range. They had a distinct form of beauty and were delighted by the many forms of art available to them since their entry into the Federation. ( ST reference : The Worlds of the Federation )

Their understanding of physics and mathematics were among the most advanced of the different cultures within the Federation. ( FASA RPG module : The Federation )

Medusan starships were equipped with specialist feeding chambers. ( TOS novel : Spectre )

History [ ]

At a distant point in their history, the Medusans were a corporeal humanoid species until they reached a point where they evolved beyond their physical form. ( FASA RPG module : The Federation )

This current appearance/form of the species was achieved 600,000 years earlier . Around 150,000 years ago, the Medusans engaged in space exploration. ( Last Unicorn RPG module : All Our Yesterdays: The Time Travel Sourcebook )

Contact with later era humanoid races led to such species suffering from severe psychological damage or even permanent brain damage as well as madness. Thus, to avoid accidental exposure, the Medusans seldom left their home system, and even when they did, it was under the strictest of conditions. ( FASA RPG module : The Federation )

Contact between them and the Federation was extremely limited. ( ST reference : The Worlds of the Federation )

Despite this, they eventually joined the United Federation of Planets, where they held the position as one of the oldest species within their ranks by the 23rd century . ( FASA RPG module : The Federation )

In the 24th century , Galaxy -class starships possessed an Interactive Navigational Control System for use by Medusan Specialists who were stationed on board. ( FASA RPG module : Star Trek: The Next Generation Officer's Manual )

Several Medusan navigators once visited Deep Space 9 , where they were entertained by Quark . ( DS9 - Millennium novel : Inferno )

In the late 24th century , a Medusan was imprisoned in the Tars Lamora prison complex in the Delta Quadrant . It was forced to expose newly arrived prisoners to its native appearance, turning them into mindless slaves. Eventually, it fashioned a containment suit and escaped confinement, becoming known as Fugitive Zero . Gathering other prisoners, Zero escaped aboard the USS Protostar . ( PRD episode : " Lost and Found ")

We are still waiting to learn if this will be a full-season, 20 episode drop all at once, or if Netflix is planning to roll out Prodigy Season 2 in some sort of weekly release strategy; there are even some Netflix series which release on a multiple-episodes-per-week schedule, stretching a season over a three to five-week timetable.

JUNE 4 UPDATE: We’ve confirmed with CBS Studios that all 20 episodes of Season 2 will be dropping at once on July 1, on Netflix in the United States and all other regions worldwide where Netflix has distribution rights.   Netflix does NOT have distribution in Canada, Nordics, CEE, Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Russia, Belarus, or Mainland China. The release schedule for both Canada (on CTV Sci Fi) and SkyShowtime (for the Nordics, Netherlands, Spain, Poland, Portugal, Central and Eastern Europe) is still unknown.

As soon as we have confirmation of more scheduling plans for Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2, along with any new promotional images or trailers, we’ll be sure to update this post with that information. In the meantime, mark your calendars for the return of Dal, Gwyn, Rok-Tahk, Jankom Pog, Zero, Murf, and Admiral Janeway!

‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ Season 2 Confirms July 2024 Netflix Return

Another batch of 20 episodes are heading exclusively to Netflix!

The rescued season of Star Trek: Prodigy has finally confirmed its Netflix release date. The next batch of episodes has been confirmed to be arriving on Netflix on July 1st, 2024.

In case you missed the news last year , Netflix acquired the rights to Star Trek: Prodigy away from Paramount+. It carried the first season from Christmas Day in 2023, with the confirmed second season skipping Paramount+ to be exclusive to Netflix.

Netflix didn’t quite acquire the global rights to the show, with many local distributors continuing to carry it. According to Unogs , 23 regions of Netflix carry Star Trek: Prodigy , including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, India, Brazil, Argentina, France, Israel, Singapore, most European regions, and select Asian territories.

Following season 1 being added to Netflix late last year, it featured in the Netflix Kids top 10s in a handful of countries , including the US, UK, and Australia, but its best-performing countries were Germany and Austria.

The wait for season 2 has been a long time coming. Last summer, we were told that the finished season wouldn’t be coming to Paramount+, but after the rescue, the release of season 2 was pushed to 2024. The wait was made even worse by the fact that the show had already aired in some countries. In France, for example, the series has been available since February 2024 .

Season 2 kicks off with Dal, Rock Tak, Zero, Jankom Pog, and Murf continuing their training to join Starfleet Academy and are called aboard a new ship for a mission under the command of Admiral Kathryn Janeway.

The new season has 20 episodes in total, with multiple two-part episodes, including the season opener and season finale, plus two split episodes in the middle. It’s unclear whether Netflix intends to split the new season in half.

The Star Trek: Prodigy voice cast includes Kate Mulgrew, Brett Gray, Ella Purnell, Rylee Alazraqui, Angus Imrie, Jason Mantzoukas, Dee Bradley Baker, John Noble and Jimmi Simpson.

The episodes for this season are as follows:

  • Directed by: Ben Hibon

WARP FIVE: Prodigy's Angus Imrie on the Borg Collective and Zero's Journey

The actor details what the Medusan has faced and their path forward.

SPOILER WARNING: Discussion for Star Trek: Prodigy — Season 1, Episode 12 "Let Sleeping Borg Lie" to follow!

Welcome to Warp Five, StarTrek.com's five question post-mortem with your favorite featured talent from the latest Star Trek episodes.

The mid-season return of Star Trek: Prodigy is warping full speed ahead ( Jankom Pog would be proud). In the aftermath of witnessing firsthand the Living Construct's disastrous impact on Starfleet, the crew of the U.S.S. Protostar are desperate for any means to shut down the weapon aboard their starship.

When the Protostar cross paths with a dormant Borg Cube in the latest episode, "Let Sleeping Borg Lie," the young crew decides to board the enemy vessel, despite Hologram Janeway's objection, for any leads. Their reasoning — if the Borg can quickly learn and adapt, perhaps they can devise a way to disarm the weapon. With experience being part of a hive mind, Zero volunteers to be the crewmember to enter the Borg's Hive Mind.

StarTrek.com had the opportunity to speak with actor Angus Imrie , who voices the Medusan, on the Zero-centric episode and finding one's own collective.

Star Trek: Prodigy Explained - Medusans

During the mid-season finale, " A Moral Star, Part 2 ," in an attempt to neutralize The Diviner, Zero revealed their true form. While successful, they inadvertently incapacitated their crewmate Gwyn after she catches Zero's reflection in a combadge. With the loss of Gwyn's memories and any knowledge around the living weapon, as well as their previous role as The Diviner's tool to brainwash the prisoners on Tars Lamora, Zero still carries immense guilt of harming others.

How does this guilt affect Zero for this second half of the season? According to Imrie, it affects them "massively." Considering the weight of this guilt, he added, "That's a huge thing for this episode, that Zero steps up and says, 'I'm the one who should go in.'"

"Zero spent the first half of the season holding the weight of the fact that they were used as a weapon by The Diviner on Tars Lamora," said Imrie. "It's that motivates them the most. It's so painful to them because as you learned from encountering Zero, they're sensitive, caring, and curious. They would never ever want to endanger anyone. It's unimaginable that they were used as a weapon."

Set A Course with Star Trek: Prodigy's Kate Mulgrew - Self-Sacrifice

Speaking on the first season's tenth episode, he stated, "That great heroic moment when they receive justice by exposing their true form to The Diviner is so unfairly complicated by the fact that Gwyn catches sight of it. So when they encounter the Borg, Zero wants to step up and make amends. It's a big moment for Zero."

Does he think Zero was able to reconcile with their guilt? Imrie believed so, stating, "Happily, Zero is now able to go on a more personal journey because so much of their journey with the other Prodigy crew is in service to them. Zero does something that's just for them, and experienced a whole new world and it's really wonderful."

The Borg Collective have long been foes for even our most experienced Starfleet crews, as denoted by Holo-Janeway's insistence to avoid them at all costs and retreat. How does Imrie feel about the young Protostar crew taking on such a threatening adversary?

"Facing the Borg, we relish it," he noted. "The great thing of being part of Star Trek is you can encounter the most dangerous villains that have been in Star Trek history. It was a very exciting prospect. Particularly for Zero, they're formally of a hive mind. It had the potential to be a very significant moment for Zero to assimilate and try to take on the Borg, which is no mean feat as we know."

A distressed Dal as he's flanked by awake Borgs on Star Trek: Prodigy

As for coming out on the other end unscathed and what the Protostar crew specifically brings to the scenario? "Well, it's like going in cold to something, isn't it? Sometimes it's beginner's luck," Imrie mused. "Suddenly you don't have all the preconditions to make you frightened. They're approaching things with a certain fearlessness, and certainly ignorance is bliss sometimes. They can think quicker, perhaps, and don't overthink. Their innocence means that anyone watching, especially children who haven't encountered the Borg, are not coming with massive preconceived notions. Their innocence can be a real positive in helping them to overcome their battles."

With their Starfleet dreams deferred due to the Living Construct, how is that affecting the Prodigy team?

"Starfleet for Zero is their great ambition," reflected Imrie. "There are three things that propel these characters. One is looking after each other, making sure that they're safe. The love that they have for each other. The other is discovering who they are; they're all fugitives. They were all displaced when we first encountered them."

Murf, Rok-Tahk, Jankom Pog, Dal, Gwyn, and Zero stand in front of Barniss Frex at a Starfleet Relay Station in Star Trek: Prodigy

"They each have their individual journeys," he added, "and the potential of finding where they belong or returning where they came from. Those two things can exist alongside one another. They can both belong with each other, and yet still remain curious about their different species and potentially returning to their own planet as it were. But Starfleet is the ultimate for them; they're all motivated by their time spent on Tars Lamora. They only want good for the universe and Starfleet represents the wonderful Federation and its mission. It would be a dream come true because they're motivated by good; Starfleet is the highest good they could aspire to."

With the Protostar given some breathing room from being on the run from The Diviner, as they all settle into their roles on the team, does Zero have a specific focus the way Dal (command) and Rok-Tahk (sciences) do?

Star Trek: Prodigy -

"Zero's pretty good navigating the ship," remarked Imrie. "They're the one who steers the path of the ship. But they clearly have a brilliant scientific mind and curiosity around solving things. That's Zero's great skill. When you see them in that brilliant episode, which is just like a murder mystery, escape room, that's when Zero's passion comes out because the curiosity combines with problem solving. You can definitely see them as a navigator in that sense."

In addition those skillsets, Zero demonstrates they can resist the Borg's assimilation. Not only that, they're able to neutralize the entire collective. Imrie called Zero's hero episode "pretty amazing."

A concerned Holo-Janeway and Murf look at a projection of the Borg Cube on Star Trek: Prodigy

"They managed to do something so impressive," explained Imrie. "It's the power of the love that they have for the Prodigy crew. Zero is assimilated into the Borg, and then they have to fight so hard to remember who they really are in order to eliminate the threat and get them all out of there. You can see from the moment that Zero enters the Borg, they lulled them into this hive mind with this almost flattery. Zero is so frightened of leaving their containment suit and potentially hurting people again, yet the Borg is resistant to that pain. It's almost as if Zero feels good about being in there; it's a liberation. They go on a real journey in the episode to being brave enough to enter the collective and then managing to tear themself away from it. It's extraordinary."

Does it affect the crew having bonded to and learning from Hologram Janeway and now coming being pursued by the real Janeway in hot pursuit of the Protostar and its former captain, Chakotay?

Admiral Janeway in her captain's chair along with the Defiant crew look ahead on Star Trek: Prodigy in shock

"Well, it's a great twist, isn't it," expressed Imrie. "Of course, they respect and admire the real Vice Admiral Janeway, but suddenly, they're put in a position where they have to be adversaries. She's definitely a threat. There's no messing around with Janeway. If she wants to do something, she'll make it happen."

"They need to be very, very wary of that threat and try not to engage in the mission hostile, but they have to make sure that the weapon isn't compromised on the Protostar ," Imrie concluded. "It's a pretty tricky situation. I wouldn't want to be in it. You just hope that at some point, later down the line, you have to hope that they'll find a way through it."

STAR TREK: PRODIGY Season 2 Hits Netflix This July

A few months ago, the cancellation of Star Trek: Prodigy made fans righteously angry. Despite having a mostly complete season two, Paramount+ pulled the plug on the popular series anyway. To make things worse, the streaming service took the show off of its platform entirely. So, what did fans do? They took to the skies, literally flying a “Save Star Trek: Prodigy” banner  over the offices of other streaming services, including Netflix. It’s a wild gesture but apparently one that resonated with the hearts of Netflix’s decision makers. Star Trek: Prodigy has found a new streaming home with Netflix and will move forward with a second season on July 1, 2024.

In a world with a lot of annoying streaming updates, this is some pretty refreshing and welcome news. Season one of Star Trek: Prodigy will hit Netflix before the end of this year. Season two will make its debut sometime in 2024. The crew of Protostar and Kathryn Janeway are getting the second shot that they so richly deserve with more  Star Trek: Prodigy at Netflix. Speaking of Janeway, actress Kate Mulgrew released a brief statement about the fandom’s awesomeness.

“I’ve always held that the Star Trek fan base is among the strongest and most intelligent in the world.  They have shown their collective passion, and we’re happy to be able to celebrate Prodigy once again,” said Mulgrew.

Star Trek: Prodigy  executive producer Alex Kurtzman and co-showrunners Dan and Kevin Hageman also had a few words to add. “Thank you to our incredible Star Trek: Prodigy fans, who championed not just a show, but a community that’s always been connected by the belief that we build a better future together. We set out to inspire you, but you inspired us. The team is still hard at work on the second season, and we can’t wait to share it with the amazing fans around the world.”

We love to hear it! Fandom is at its best when everyone works together for the greater good.

Just a couple weeks after the producers asked for patience , there is finally news on the release of the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy .

Start your July with new Prodigy

Today the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy showed up on the “Coming Soon” tab for Netflix Kids, listing Monday, July 1 for the release. TrekMovie has confirmed this with CBS Studios. However, we were not yet able to confirm if the release will include all 20 episodes of season 2 . [ See our UPDATE: Netflix To Release All 20 Episodes Of ‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ Season 2 In July; Also Coming To SkyShowtime ]

The listing on Netflix also includes a new synopsis:

Now Starfleet trainees, Dal and his friends embark on another adventure to solve the mystery of the Protostar and save the planet from destruction.

star trek prodigy medusan

From Netflix app

Season 2 of Prodigy will feature the return of Star Trek: Voyager’s Robert Picardo as the Holographic Doctor, now serving on the new USS Voyager-A under the command of Vice Admiral Janeway. The Doctor will be tasked with minding the new trainees Dal R’El, Rok-Tahk, Zero, and Jankom Pog along with their Melenoid slime worm companion Murf.

Earlier this year Picardo had high praise for the Prodigy  writers and their approach to his character…

“What’s wonderful about the writing of the show is that they maintain what I love most about doing  Voyager  itself, which was I could be a comic relief, but on a dime I could turn and it could get quite serious when it was a dire situation. [ Prodigy ] used me for comic relief, believe me, in a lot of scenes, in a lot of episodes. But there are some dramatic moments which was really a pleasure to do as well.”

Gwyn will still be a big part of the show in season 2. She has a mission of her own, to save her people the Vau N’Akat on the planet Solum.

The doctor gives the provisional cadets a briefing in preview of season 2

The first season of Prodigy  wrapped up on Paramount+ in December 2022. Season 1 was re-released worldwide on Netflix last Christmas after Paramount+ removed the series in the summer of 2023. Netflix previously announced that season 2 would arrive in 2024 and today is the first time there has been a specific date. In March all 20 episodes were unexpectedly released early on French TV (dubbed in French).

We are awaiting more details and the release of preview images or possibly even a trailer. A clip from season 2 was released by CBS last summer .

This is a developing story. We will provide updates as soon as they are available.

Keep up with news about the  Star Trek Universe .

It’s been a long road, getting from there to here. Welcome back cadets! Can’t wait to see The Doctor :)

It’s been a long road, getting from there to here.

I said the same thing on Facebook and X, lol.

Yes, so excited to see the Doctor back!!! I cannot wait to see him and Janeway in a room again. It’s been far too long.

Oh cool, I didn’t expect any more Trek for a long while.

I liked the first season although it lost something when it became too Voyager. Was never a fan of Voyager so not sure how I feel about this. We’ll see.

“I  liked the first season although it lost something when it became too Voyager. Was never a fan of Voyager.”

This is where I am, too.

I’m the opposite, the more Voyager the better. Bring it on if you ask me.

Sane bro…same! 👍

Voyager was my first show into Star Trek so always happy to see more of it.

How does this work for Canada? It is usually shown on CTV Sci Fi and is not on Netflix here currently.

We will be following up with more info including international release for those countries outside the current Netflix countries. This includes Eastern European countries with SkyShowtime and Canada with CTVScifi

In Canada, it used to be that Star Trek shows were on CTV (a network) and Crave (a streaming service), both of which are owned by Bell Media. Now the only way to watch Prodigy is via CTV, which I think requires a cable TV subscription; there’s no streaming service that carries it. Any chance this might change…?

You can use a VPN to make your device look like it’s in the US. I recommend Surfshark, IP Vanish or Express VPN. I use Surfshark. I watch Netflix from the US, London, UK or Budapest, Hungary. All from the comfort of my home from the GTA. (Greater Traffic Area..)

So far, season 1 is still available on CRAVE. I haven’t seen anything in the listings for CTV Sci-Fi or CRAVE regarding season 2 yet. I’m in Montreal, so I will check the Videotron guide to see if the Prodigy season 2 is listed in the guide at that time. But I think I can only look 2 weeks ahead.

This is very very exciting!

I just watched season one for the first time literally a month ago and I was so impressed with this show. I adored practically everything about it; especially having Janeway back. But all the new characters were great and enjoyed all their arcs Dal went from my least favorite to favorite after the first half of the season.

Other than Picard season 3, this is the only other show in NuTrek I have truly loved. Hopefully we will see more Voyager characters along the way

Well I’m still so happy you finally found something else in NuTrek to be excited about! It sounds like you finished the season and loved it! :)

As far as more legacy characters showing up, I am 100% convinced at least one more Voyager character will appear, even if it’s just a cameo or something. But they have said there will be another major legacy character involved in the season outside the Doctor and not from Voyager. So most likely TNG or (hopefully) DS9.

And I’m also happy to see you can post your thoughts without feeling harassed over it as you were but I will digress on that. Most people here are actually very open, friendly and civil, but yes like yourself, VERY passionate lol.

Haha, thanks!

Yes it is really nice to be enjoying another show outside of Picard. But I didn’t watch it because I thought it was bad, but simply not for me being geared to young children. But you and others were so right, it really does speak to adults as much as kids. I just appreciate it’s telling authentic Star Trek stories again. I know the others try but I have other issues with them beyond just that.

I would truly love anyone from TNG or DS9. I was actually a bit irked we didn’t get anyone from DS9 at all on Picard. I didn’t expect Odo for obvious reasons even though the season dealt with the changelings, but Kira or Bashir popping up would’ve been fabulous. Let’s hope we get another shot on Prodigy!

And yes everyone has been super lovely outside of that one individual I won’t name; just happy they are gone. But I haven’t had an issue with anyone else and have always had pleasant conversations, even when we do disagree from time to time. As you said, we are all passionate and sometimes resolute in our opinions; but that’s no excuse to be a bully to others because you can’t handle a difference of opinion that’s frankly been said many times over by others anyway. If you can’t have a civil conversation without getting so triggered over it, just keep scrolling. But I want to reiterate, this has been a great board to pop my head in from time to time to give a few random opinions and talk to you lovely people the last few months. :)

And I haven’t really posted here or other boards much lately anyway since I decided not to watch Discovery this season (but really hoped you and others liked it) and there haven’t been a lot of other things that have interested me. This show definitely has my attention now though.

Okay that’s good to know! 😊

Sadly that’s so much of the Internet these days so we’re all used to it but this board is very small as it is and it’s sad when someone new comes along who has never bothered anyone and is treated that way really bothered me. I’m guessing all the shouting and meltdowns over shows and movies we have here probably keep most new people away as it is lol. But it’s different when you are being harassed or attacked for simply having an opinion.

And most of the strife has mostly been over Discovery IMO. Passions just run very high on that show on either side. But the irony is the last season has been an absolute delight to discuss lol. Seriously, very little fighting has happened over it. There are still people who hate it as others who love it but very little infighting or trolling over it

Part of it has to do with certain personalities finally being banned who kept all the silly fights going in the first place as you experienced yourself, but there has just been a lot less people talking about the show overall for some reason and more people seem to generally like the season including me. That always helps lol. All in all it was actually a pretty tame, chill and frankly a dull place at times to discuss the show for a change.

Now that’s it’s over these boards will probably take a turn for the better overall since the other current shows are just more well liked or just less bitterness over them lol. Prodigy is one of those shows that gets 50 posts on a GOOD week discussing an episode and there is very little strife over it. People obviously disagree here and there but it’s a pretty easy going show to discuss so can’t wait. Prodigy brings more good vibes!

(See I got it back on topic ;))

And definitely would love to see Kira or Bashir. Anyone from DS9 would be a plus. Give me 10 episodes with Brunt and I won’t complain lol.

I think we’re going to get a great season either way!

I guess things become better on boards when you eliminate the elderly children who wants to throw a temper tantrum towards others when they don’t get their way haha.

And I’m very happy you enjoyed this season of Discovery. I haven’t read any of the articles or the comments about the season so not sure how others felt about it. Someone I talk to on FB watched it and it sounds like she liked it too and she’s not a big fan of the show either. I did watch a YouTube video discussing the finale yesterday to see how they handled the Progenitors. It sounded fine but not something I need to watch personally. But I hope its fans enjoyed the ending.😊

But I’m still in the middle of my Enterprise rewatch I started a month ago and currently on season 3. By the time I finish Prodigy may have already started!

So a good way to pass the time along until it gets here. 😄

And I would have no problems if Brunt joined the show lol. Jeffrey Combs is a Star Trek treasure.

It’s always great to talk to you. You’re always so sweet.

LOL thanks. And yes very excited about Prodigy. I really had no idea how I would ultimately feel about this season of Discovery considering I haven’t been a big fan of the last four lol. And while it did come out a little better as I hoped, it still wasn’t a complete home run either. But I felt it did just enough to feel it ended OK at least and that’s really all I can ask for at this point. I still have zero interest to rewatch it anytime soon though.

With Prodigy my expectations are much much higher because I trust the people who make that show 100%. They knocked it out of the park in the first season and I imagine it will be just as solid next season as well.

And enjoy your Enterprise marathon. Although I know you didn’t watch Discovery this season I know you’re obviously aware about the big reveal in the finale and one of the reasons why I liked it so much. Just a cool tie in although I know others are more mixed on the revelation. Not me, I thought it was great and I just love how it basically bookends Enterprise and Discovery together. :)

they did get Ro in, who was supposed to be in DS9 but ms forbes declined the role.

“What’s wonderful about the writing of the show is that they maintain what I love most about doing Voyager itself, which was I could be a comic relief, but on a dime I could turn and it could get quite serious when it was a dire situation.”

What I love about Prodigy is that they didn’t change the legacy characters so much that they were unrecognizable. They feel like a plausible continuation of the characters.

I’m rewatching S1 now and it’s so much fun. These writers can put in so much story in 23 minutes and it works. I can’t wait for S2. I’m hoping for a S3 or maybe a TV or theatrical movie.

This is amazing news!

Prodigy is my favorite show in the modern era and just tick all the boxes of great Star Trek for me! It’s also cool we now have less than a month for the next show.

As Janeway would say, do it!

Amazing News! Can’t wait to see what Kevin & Dan and their incredible team have in store for us.

Great news!

Yay! Have Anthony & Laurie talked about how they are going to review the season if they are all dropped at once? Like maybe 2 per week or something like that?

I hope they at least have a little break between batches of episodes. Dropping all 20 would be ridiculous. They’d be gobbled up in a flash and fan conversations wouldn’t be as fun.

I prefer this format. Having the freedom to choose when/how to watch each episode is a gift. Specially with Prodigy!

I feel like 10 episode releases with a short break a la Bridgerton is getting plenty. We all benefit from being able to talk about these shows on relatively the same timeline. Watching a show on my own time is fine, but I enjoy talking about them as they happen. With Netflix shows it’s always a case of, “OMG did you see episode 6 yet? No? Oh. Okay, well let me know when you get there!” or “Oh man I’m not there yet! Bummer.” The immediacy of conversations is stifled a bit. I find the majority of people gobble up binge shows like candy in one big bender, and everyone from the fans to the creators doing publicity chatters excitedly for maybe a month… and then the audience moves on to the next content that must be consumed. Binge models lead to longer hiatuses too. Even beyond Ted Sarandos’ inane comments, I lament what Netflix has done to the industry more than the convenient disruptions it has pioneered.

I assume TrekMovie will stagger reviews for episodes that have come out and it could become a big jumble of different schedules.

I’m hoping they at least divide the season up and we get 10 in July and maybe the other 10 in September or something. Give people wanting more. But don’t space it out too much. I really feel a big reason the show failed on P+ is because after they dropped the first half of the season, it took a full year to get the second half and most people (especially kids) just moved on by then.

Precisely, this is what modern animators don’t seem to understand. Kids grow up fast, which means you need to get the content to them quickly. In thine olden times there use to be 65 episodes spread over 13 weeks to tell the show’s story. If it was really successful it would get an order for the next year.

I’m of the opposite opinion. I hope they drop the entire season so that it can be binged. That seems to be the dominant strategy at Netflix.

I get it. And Prodigy’s team are going to be delighted it’s being seen at all and supported. It just would be nice if it were over the span of 20 weeks at a decent ebb.

This show is really great with the addition of the Voyager characters. Can’t wait to see The Doctor.

More Voyager please!

I wish that I could muster-up the level of enthusiasm the show’s biggest boosters (saluting you, Tiger 2) have for it, but I’m happy for them and will certainly be checking it out myself. From my perspective it’s fine for what it is: a children’s show set in the Trek universe. There’s nothing at all wrong with that in principle, and the best Pixar outings can easily transcend the demographic they’re pitched to accommodate. It’s just not particularly what I come to Star Trek for.

And speaking of Pixar, whatever reservations I have about Prodigy — man, is it gorgeous to look at. Many years ago, before TAS premiered, I remember Roddenberry boasting that the level of animation at Filmation Studios was on a par with Disney. . . a claim that, to be generous, was pretty generous. But that the level of cinematography and production design in Prodigy often compares favorably with feature films is just what you happen to see on the screen. It’s stellar work.

I laughed pretty hard over that first sentence.

And at the end of the day, you gave it a chance and it’s not really your thing. That’s all anyone can ask for. And yes, if nothing else, the show is stunningly beautiful to look at. Why it’s disappointing it didn’t reach the original target audience as it was meant to; or not as many as Paramount hoped I guess. Maybe it will have a better shot being on Netflix.

We’ll now know soon!

In regards to the visual quality, I agree it’s stunning to see. And it’s even more impressive considering it’s apparently about half as expensive to make compared to other animated shows (according to what the Hagemans have said), and they were working during the height of the pandemic which would have created certain hurdles getting it done.

Well…my patience died a couple weeks ago, but maybe I should have tried to be just a tiny bit more patient to begin with, because I am surprised Netflix isn’t waiting until December like I was thinking they were going to. So, this month The Acolyte, and next month Prodigy!

Even if they do drop them all at once, I will be watching one per week.

Alright, maybe two or three per week.

This is great news to have confirmed at last. Now the big question for me is will season 2 get a physical blu-ray/DVD release later down the line? Netflix are very against this, but Paramount are for it. Wonder which way it will go.

Not saying it’s a guarantee, but Netflix shows that were produced by outside studios have gotten physical releases. The Crown and Narcos come to mind.

I hope they release all 20 eps at once. The once-a-week thing is getting tiring…

I’m with you on that. Poor Anthony and Laurie though.

I prefer the once a week releases. But they will probably release 10 or 20 at once.

Erich Anderson r i p

If this ends up being the last season, as I’m suspecting it will be, I hope they get a chance to wrap things up.

I was thrilled to see this yesterday. After all that the show went through, and all the waiting for a release date, it’s great to finally know we’re in the home stretch. I loved this show. The biggest surprise of the modern era for me (though Lower Decks was a close second in that regard). So excited to see what’s in store for season 2. I’ve been hearing nothing but great things from those who’ve seen it (and thankfully no spoilers either).

YAY!! The wait is over. PROD rocks!!!

Finally! I was about to start learning French.

Will they Release all 10 or 20 Episodes all at once or will they get released weekly

Netflix typically releases episodes all at once. So we’ll probably either get all 20 on July 1, or get the first ten then and get the second half at a later date.

YES! Definitely keeping my Netflix subscription. CANT WAIT FOR SEASON 2! Seeing the Doc again will bring a tear to my eye I bet.

The Doctor was one of my 2 favorite Voyager characters (hard to choose between him and Seven), so I’m thrilled we’re getting him back. And I could easily imagine him being great on Prodigy, with these writers. He should have great interactions with everyone, including very likely having scenes with Janeway.

Yes I love the Doctor so much as well. I was hoping he showed up on Picard at some point but sadly not to be. But this is actually better because he will be a full time character and back on another Voyager with Janeway! I can’t wait for their scenes together. That’s music to my ears.

Doctor who?

Yep the Doctor is one of my favorite characters as well. I was so happy to hear he’s coming back on this show.

I’m ecstatic with all the Voyager love we’re getting on this show. And it’s so great how accurate canon has been on it. They have honored the Star Trek universe well.

Good news, time for a rewatch of season one.

We’re getting our beloved Prodigy back in less than a month and I can’t wait! Absolutely love this show. We have to show up in force and let Netflix know we want a third season!

This show and LDS is what I’m excited to see this year! It’s great to have them back even if it’s their final seasons.
