Star Clippers: Royal Clipper

Inspired by the legendary 1902 Preussen, the first five-masted ship, Royal Clipper was launched in 2000 as a true sailing vessel at 439 feet in length with 54,000 square feet of sails across 42 sails. With five fully rigged masts, the ship is recognized in Guinness World Records as the largest square rigger in service today.

Modeled after the historic clipper ships, Royal Clipper travels under full sail – and by wind power – for up to 80% of its voyages. When the vessel does navigate under power, the energy-efficient engines only use high-quality, low-sulfur gas oil, earning Star Clippers the International Air Pollution Prevention Certificate for all three of its clipper ships.

The ship can accommodate as many as 227 passengers in 114 staterooms, along with 106 crew. This ship underwent a significant upgrade in 2018, followed by another refurbishment in 2021 that included an enhanced ice-class hull. This new addition allows Silver Wind to be one of the most adaptable ships in the fleet, sailing from the polar regions like Antarctica to sunny island climates in the Caribbean and cruising picturesque shorelines along the Mediterranean Sea.

Silver Wind measures about 515 feet in length and has 149 all ocean-view suites, more than 80% of which boast a private veranda. Originally named Hussar, the 360-foot Sea Cloud has a fascinating history – while the ship started as a private yacht, it later became a floating palace of diplomacy and then a warship. Today, Sea Cloud accommodates up to 64 passengers in 32 outside cabins and carries about 60 crew. The ship also boasts 29 sails, with the height of the main mast towering 184 feet above the water.

When it first launched in Le Havre, France, in November 1985, Wind Star was the world's largest sailing vessel and the flagship for the line. While this schooner may not be the largest tall ship on the seas today, Wind Star is an elegant four-masted sailing yacht and the cruise line's namesake. Since its launch, this ship has been through a few renovations, with the most recent one in 2018. The 360-foot vessel features 73 deluxe ocean-view staterooms that accommodate 148 passengers, and it can carry 101 crew. Four masts stand at 204 feet tall, and six triangular Dacron sails, which are self-furling and computerized, make up a surface area of 21,500 square feet.

As with other Windstar vessels, you'll find the same casual elegance on board this sailing ship. Guests will get to sail away to the music Windstar traditionally plays while raising the flag during every port departure – Vangelis' song "1492: Conquest of Paradise," which is the musical score to the movie of the same name. National Geographic Endurance is the first new polar build in the company's 50-year history, and its name honors the ship of renowned Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton. The elegant Scandinavian-inspired design also features the patented X-Bow, offering eco-friendly benefits and a smoother, quieter ride.

National Geographic Endurance is 407 feet in length and has 69 spacious staterooms with large windows or balconies to accommodate up to 126 passengers. The ship also carries 112 crew. You'll also find beautiful public spaces, a boutique, a theater, expedition rooms and a promenade deck where you can access the bow. Le Commandant Charcot sails to the farthest points in the Northern and Southern hemispheres, including Antarctica and the North Pole. The 24-night Northwest Passage cruise takes guests from Reykjavik in Iceland to Nome, Alaska, and features polar activities like kayaking between the ice floes, snowshoeing, ice fishing or even exploring with a naturalist guide by hovercraft. While you won’t find casinos or amenities for young children, you will find a Nordic spa with a “snow grotto” at sea, several dining options, and onboard extras like free Wi-Fi and complimentary wine and beer at mealtime.

The ultra-luxury Seabourn Encore features 300 suites for 600 passengers with all the amenities of Seabourn’s Odyssey-class ships. Additions to Encore include a VIP area on the top deck, a wellness program and two restaurants, The Grill by Thomas Keller and Sushi.

My 10 Favorite Small-Ship River And Ocean Cruises

The more I travel, the more I appreciate not having to pack and unpack, carry bags up and down stairs, or worry about whether I can figure out a transfer from one point to another. Even though I speak numerous foreign languages, it’s still a godsend to have someone else deal with the details like confirming reservations and itineraries. With increasing numbers of travelers and concomitant travel complications, it’s wonderful to have someone else grab the reins.

With a cruise, a lot of the legwork is done for you. You decide on the itinerary, the type of ship you’d like to travel on, and voilà, off you go. The cruise line becomes your personal assistant, connecting with you prior to your trip and guiding you along as you drift away into worry-free bliss. Most days you wake up somewhere new, with the most pressing concern being What time should I have breakfast?

I’ve traveled on a variety of cruises, from the giants of the ocean to smaller vessels that glide down channels and rivers and easily visit tiny harbors and ports accessible only to them.

Here are my recommendations for memorable small-ship cruises.

1. Patagonia With Australis

You’ll need to pack a variety of layers for this amazing five-day “Fjords of Tierra del Fuego” cruise from Punta Arenas, Chile, to the tip of Cape Horn and Ushuaia, Argentina. The Stella Australis expedition ship travels effortlessly through the inner fjords of Patagonia and “Glacier Alley,” taking you to the bottom of South America with a backdrop of calving glaciers, ice-blue formations, and a sky filled with constellations seen only from the southern part of the world. Onboard you’ll stay toasty warm in one of 100 cabins. But if you plan to venture to the top deck as well, you should see the Southern Cross and ponder the mysteries of the galaxy, you’ll need all manner of clothes to keep you comfortable.

Excursions take you off the ship by zodiac, and the weather is variable from balmy, sunny, and rainy to downright freezing. This is a trip where you can be as physically active as you like. Visits to see the Magellanic penguins involve some hiking on sandy beaches, and a little pre-cruise training might be in order if you plan to summit Cape Horn. On the climb to the top, you’ll likely encounter windy conditions, too, adding an extra challenge. For your achievement, you’ll toast at the bottom with whiskey on the rocks, using actual snow. Expert guides on board offer educational lectures to prepare you for the sights and provide photography tips.

Pro Tips: Inclement weather can wreak havoc on your cameras and lenses. Bring your phone, a waterproof camera, and even a point-and-shoot or DSLR to be ultra safe . For the best weather and the most daylight, plan your trip during the months from November through March. As there is no Wi-Fi on board (how wonderful!), you might want to rent a satellite phone. There are no elevators, and the ability to climb into a zodiac is a requisite if you plan to leave the ship.

2. Tahiti And The South Pacific With Paul Gauguin Cruises

For a cultural immersion that’s both beautiful and luxurious, Paul Gauguin Cruises’ seven-night “Tahiti & the Society Islands” cruise explores Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, and Huahine and is a delicious escape from the cold-weather blues. You’ll start your sojourn with a flight to Papeete, Tahiti, where you’ll overnight before boarding the ship. The m/s Paul Gauguin defines French style and luxury with 165 beautifully appointed staterooms and suites and restaurants with wine pairings and French cuisine that could attain Michelin star status. Services at the Deep Nature Spa and on-board entertainment are first-rate, filling at-sea hours with relaxation and Polynesian culture.

Each island has its own set of charms. Bora Bora is known as the honeymoon island, marked by resorts with overwater bungalows and deep turquoise waters. Moorea and Huahine are a mix of nature and activity where you can jet ski, snorkel with stingrays, explore volcanic beaches, and experience the French Polynesian lifestyle made famous in movies like Mutiny on the Bounty . A DIY stop on the itinerary, Paul Gauguin Cruises has its own private island, Motu Mahana, where you’ll spend a day swimming, snorkeling, playing volleyball, and enjoying a beach barbecue replete with cocktails from a floating bar.

Pro Tip: If you’re connecting on a flight to PPT, I recommend spending a few days in Papeete to adjust to any time difference. Papeete is a fun port with a shopping and food market and roulettes (food trucks) for local fare.

3. Croatia With Goolets

Not at all like the “reality show” experience on Netflix’s Below Deck , Goolets promises superlative chartered-yacht service and happy passengers. Nearly 100 different ships at different price points can take you along the Dalmatian Coast and beyond, but I suggest going full bucket-list any time from May through October and choosing the superyacht Freedom or the family-friendly Ohana for your Adriatic journey.

The vision of husband-and-wife team Mitja and Alenka Mirtic, these superyachts are essentially floating mansions, understated in their luxury but staffed with smiling pros who attend to your every wish. With only 11 staterooms and a maximum of 23 passengers, Freedom is the jewel of the Goolets fleet. The superyacht is a beauty — there are four decks, an upper one with lounging areas, an outdoor pool, and a hot tub; the middle with the dining room, bar, and lounge; and two below with staterooms, a cinema, game room, spa, gym, and sauna. Ohana is a less-pricey choice for up to 30 guests with 14 cabins, recently renovated with a children’s playroom, a cinema room, and a full complement of water toys (seabobs, jet skis, paddle boards) that you’ll find on both superyachts. On each, meals reflect local delicacies and are catered to your tastes.

You can customize your itinerary, deciding which of Croatia’s 1200 islands and islets you’d like to visit, and then Goolets will put it together, adding in little surprises like a visit to the island of Vela Stupe, a precious mini-island where you’ll feast on oysters, Champagne, and wine at the one establishment there, restaurant Moro. Or transferring you to a zodiac and lifting the barrier ropes so you can float into the tiny entrance to gorgeous Stiniva Beach. Most cruises start in the medieval city of Split, a city worthy of spending three nights on its own merit to wander its warren of streets and visit Diocletian’s Palace where Game of Thrones was filmed. Each island visited after that — Brač, Hvar, Korčula, Vis, and Vela Stupe — has its own charms and attractions from beaches and café life to 13th-century buildings, and, of course, dramatic scenery. Port stops on the mainland are possible, too, to include Makarska with its seaside walkway, charming shops, and Old Town square; or historic Dubrovnik (another favorite for Game of Thrones fans) and its low-key neighbor Cavtat.

Pro Tips: While not as well known as neighboring Italy for its wines and olive oils, Croatia excels in its offerings. Be sure to sample the many varieties that vary from island to island. 4. The Champagne Region With French Country Waterways

The pandemic has taught us a thing or two about the value of slowing down, and that’s where a cruise on a French Country Waterways barge fits in perfectly. Leaving from and returning to Paris — where it’s an absolute must to begin and end your journey with a few days in the City of Light — the Nenuphar is a luxuriously appointed barge that accommodates only 12 passengers for a slow 6-day float through the canals of Champagne. The intimate size guarantees that you’ll get to know your cruise mates very well, over early morning coffee, during wine-and-cheese happy hours, and at lavish meals both on the barge and at the Michelin-starred Les Crayères in Reims.

You’ll also become an expert in French wines and champagne production with private tours in Épernay and Ludes that include Moët & Chandon and Ployez-Jacquemart. For a foray into French history, the Gothic Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims stands sentinel in breathtaking glory. If you’re feeling the need to be active, there are bikes to use, yoga mats to borrow, and villages to visit as you travel through the locks. You might even decide to lend a hand to help the lock keeper move the barge forward. But the true beauty of the cruise lies in lounging on the sundeck and taking in the lovely countryside as you glide past while enjoying renowned wines and cheeses.

Pro Tip: While not necessary, knowing a little French will help if you decide to visit local bakeries and bars. History buffs will enjoy excursions that mix French history with American WWI sites like the battlefield at Belleau Wood.

5. The Greek Islands With Celestyal Cruises

Sometimes a shorter cruise is all you want, and Celestyal’s four-night “Iconic Aegean” itinerary covers the bases with stops at popular Santorini and Mykonos, split-personality Rhodes and Crete, and smaller islands like Patmos. Starting in Athens, schedule a few land-based days to explore the city’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Acropolis, where you can visit the ruins of the Parthenon and the Theatre of Dionysus. Have dinner on the lively Plaka and day trip to Delphi to absorb the vibes of the famed oracle. Then it’s time to board and enjoy the all-inclusive voyage on what is the largest of the small ships on this list with a typical passenger count of fewer than 1,000 guests.

Celestyal encourages you to get out and about, to do a deep dive into the personality of each island, rather than stay on the ship. A true benefit is that Celestyal is Greek-owned and operated, so they really know the country’s culture and when to add extra docking time for exploring each island’s archaeological wonders and mind-blowing scenery.

I loved climbing around the Palace of Knossos in Crete and comparing the new and medieval sides of Rhodes, which quickly became my favorite of the islands. In Santorini, my day was spent in Instagram-crazy Oia and Fira negotiating the steep stairs of the cliffs. In Mykonos, you can do as the locals do and simply laze by the pool and sip ouzo. On board, Celestyal’s food and décor are notably Greek and Mediterranean with staterooms done up in the blue and white colors of the Greek flag. 

Pro Tip: Many of the archaeological sites have a considerable number of stairs, and other areas are quite hilly. Ask in advance for assistance in arranging taxis or using cable cars, or for suggestions for alternate activities. A seven-night cruise is also available. 6. Burgundy With French Country Waterways

My second favorite slow-travel, barge cruise is French Country Waterways ’ Burgundy float. Traveling from and to Paris, the Adrienne takes you on a luxurious sojourn on the Canal de Bourgogne and the Canal du Centre through the Côte d’Or wine region. The crew on this cruise does double-duty, with wine and cheese presenters often turning into little elves who magically tidy up your stateroom as you dine, or captains who control the locks as you rise and descend along the canals while teaching you how to navigate. No wish is too large for the crew and you’ll learn a lot about wine and cheese here, given the location of the cruise.

Excursions can be as leisurely as you’d like. You can visit stellar vineyards like Chassagne-Montrachet by motor coach or log your daily steps with walking tours through storied wine town Beaune or “Mustard Capital of the World” Dijon. Early risers will enjoy the hot air balloon experience over the region’s beautiful rapeseed fields. Bikes are available to use any time you’re tied up along the canals. In true French Country Waterways fashion, you’ll enjoy a Michelin-starred dinner at Lameloise in the charming town of Chagny.

Pro Tip: With only six cabins, the Adrienne is small enough to book the entire barge for a group of your friends. French Country Waterways is more than happy to tailor activities to the group.

7. Normandy With Scenic Cruises

History, art, and music lovers have a luxurious option with Scenic Cruises’ “Normandy and Gems of the Seine” itinerary. Leaving from and ending in Paris, the beautiful Scenic Gem is a river boat that caters to a mix of interests.

Having a focus on Normandy, history plays a large role in choices for your Scenic Freestyle excursions. You’ll learn quite a lot about the Vikings’ involvement in Rouen, the American heroics at Utah Beach and Omaha Beach and much more. To truly understand the importance of Normandy in World War II, one must experience it. Three excursions are offered to take you to the most important D-Day sites including a museum built into a German bunker overlooking Utah Beach, Omaha Beach, and the Normandy American cemetery where rows and rows of white graves are sobering reminders of the nearly 10,000 soldiers who died during the Allied liberation of France.

Art lovers will love the day at Giverny, soaking up the colors of Monet’s residence, garden and famous lily pads, as well as the day trip to Van Gogh’s last-known abode and grave site in Auvers-sur-Oise. An immersion into impressionism includes a tour of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen with an on-board painting class. Music features with walking tours by Maurice Ravel’s home in Lyons la Fôret and the unusual Erik Satie Museum in Honfleur. A special evening of wine and music at a château is a Scenic exclusive, and the one chosen for this cruise includes an unusual quartet with a double bass, harp, vibraphone and clarinet.

Designed for a luxurious and comfortable voyage, each stateroom on the Scenic Space-Ship is gorgeously appointed and comes with your own butler. If you’ve ever wanted a perfect, all-inclusive cruise, this one’s for you. While some cruises charge extra for excursions and beverages and expect you to figure out tipping at the end, Scenic eliminates those concerns. You pay one price at the beginning and your only add-ons are spa treatments and gift shop items. To sweeten that as well, Scenic gives you an on-board credit to apply.

Dining is an all-day affair on Scenic, starting with room service on your balcony if you so desire, or three full meals in the Crystal Dining Room. Menus change daily with a rotation of suggested wine pairings. Two private dinners are offered, one for all guests and a Chef’s Table for passengers on the top deck. Your on-board activities go well beyond meals — in the evening the amicable (and very witty) Cruise Director leads a program that might include music trivia, cheese tastings, live music with dancing and more.

Pro Tip: Some of the tours involve extensive walking like the visit to Van Gogh’s home where a steep, narrow staircase leads to the tiny bedroom. The walks to the museums, beaches and cemetery would be difficult for those with mobility issues.

8. Bordeaux With Scenic Cruises

If wine is more your thing, Scenic’s river cruise along the Garonne and Gironde rivers passes through France’s most storied wine region. Less about history and more about gastronomy, the “Bordeaux Affair” departs from the city of Bordeaux. Starting your itinerary with a visit to the city’s impressive Cité du Vin gives you a useful introduction to the wines you will experience over the course of the cruise .

Similar to the Scenic Gem , the Scenic Diamond considers every aspect of luxury from beautifully appointed suites to balconies that turn into Sun Lounges with Scenic’s signature moving glass walls and window. You’ll also find a small gym, a spa, and a salt therapy room.

Dining includes regional specialties such as oysters from Bassin d’Arcachon, foie gras, and canelés , small French pastries made with rum and vanilla. A vast selection of wines takes full advantage of the vineyards on both sides of the rivers and is available at meals and at the bar at all times. Particularly enjoyable is Scenic’s outdoor BBQ lunch served on the top deck. An all-day snack bar and room service are available if you don’t feel up to restaurant dining.

On this culinary-focused cruise, guests also have the opportunity to experience Scenic Culinaire, on-board cooking demonstrations conducted by Scenic chefs. If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to make crêpes Suzette, croque monsieur, or French onion soup, this is your opportunity in an intimate setting. Pro Tip: There are many options for purchasing Bordeaux wines at great prices. Bring some wine skins to pack bottles in your checked luggage. You can also have wine shipped to your residence with the VAT discount. Some to consider: Entre-deux-Mers, Sauternes, Saint-Émilion, Pauillac, Pomerol and Margaux.

9. Iceland With Windstar

Windstar’s newly stretched Star Pride carries only 312 passengers and travels around the coastline of Iceland on the “Around Iceland” cruise . If you’ve been to Alaska and enjoyed the northern climes, The Land of Fire and Ice is a fascinating follow-up exploration of a volcanic country, or, should I say, of one huge national park.

The scenery is breathtaking on this seven-day sojourn with a range of waterfalls, glaciers, cliffs and geysers. Excursions from the cruise’s six stops will take you for a dip in the famous Blue Lagoon where you can slather yourself with silica mud, ATV riding through some pretty challenging courses, and lava field hiking with crampons secured to prevent slipping off the oft-treacherous ridges. Slightly less challenging, you can hike to Þingvellir where you can pose with your arms stretched between two continental plates.

The Windstar crew are pros at service. Truly where “everybody knows your name,” Windstar cruises are intimate, luxurious and thoughtful. Your cabin attendants will attend to your desires, from extra ice to special pillows, room service with surprises like towel animals, and sweet turndown treats.

A Windstar special, the exclusive Destination Discovery Event is an evening concert in the blue-colored church at Seydisfjordur where you’ll also hear tales about Iceland’s elves and trolls. If you’re curious about how Icelanders dine, you can tour Reykjavik on a pub or foodie tour — Icelandic hot dogs are a must! Architecture fans will love Reykjavik’s iconic Hallgrimskirkja church, a landmark that stands proudly overlooking the city’s brightly painted buildings.

Dining options on Windstar give you choices to meet your mood. You can dine in the main restaurant where dietary restrictions are carefully noted, or order room service at your whim. The ship’s specialty restaurant Cuadro 44 serves up tapas and sangria while the casual outdoor Grill by Steven Raichlen is a literal breath of fresh air.

Pro Tip: Given that Iceland is a pricey destination, taking advantage of Windstar’s excursions is a smart way to tour. Be sure to sign up in advance or meet with the Shore Excursion Manager as soon as you board. Bring binoculars — you’re sure to see puffins, whales, Icelandic ponies and many birds.

10. Penobscot Bay With Maine Windjammers

I grew up in a sailing mecca, the North Shore of Massachusetts, and having the opportunity to cruise on a historical schooner held real appeal. Retrofitted to accommodate passengers with modern conveniences, the Maine Windjammer that I sailed on, the Schooner American Eagle , had its first days as a fishing vessel in Gloucester, Massachusetts, the town where my mother was born.

Sailing on a windjammer isn’t about luxury — it’s about the voyage, the camaraderie of the crew and passengers, and the willingness to follow the wind instead of a set itinerary. You’ll have the opportunity to learn to hoist the sails, cook in a tiny galley kitchen, and set up communal meals along with your fellow passengers. This cruise requires a bit of dexterity, maneuvering around your small cabin with its bunk beds or small double bed. Showers and bathrooms are shared, also requiring some coordination in tight spaces and necessitating climbing up and down ladders.

What you’ll experience here is an exhilarating, seafaring voyage that hearkens back to the original days of sailing, without the frills. Meals depend on the talents of the chef and his assistants, and the captain sets the tone for the sail. Weather is unpredictable, and it is advisable that you bring appropriate rain gear as you’ll spend most of your time on deck as you traverse Penobscot Bay. This wasn’t for me, but the bravest among you can dive into the chilly ocean. I preferred the island visits that take you to an on-the-sand lobster bake or a homespun evening concert, Maine-style.

The Caribbean is one of the world's most appealing cruising destinations, renowned for its gorgeous beaches, balmy temperatures and easy-going island culture. Discover the tiny islands and secluded beaches that the big ships can't reach with our pick of the best small ship cruises to the Caribbean.

Yet we often hear people writing the Caribbean off, lumping all of the islands together based on bad past experiences or some horror story they've heard from a friend. As with so many preconceptions about cruising, this negative view of the Caribbean tends to come from the world of mainstream megaships.

The big ships are restricted to busy, overdeveloped islands where going ashore means running a gauntlet of hassle from street vendors, touts and taxi drivers. Often the main attractions are duty free shopping malls, and the chances of experiencing an authentic slice of Caribbean culture are minimal. Some of the big cruise lines even stop at their own private islands, a sanitised pastiche of the Caribbean that we find rather depressing.

A small ship cruise around the Caribbean is a completely different experience, allowing you to visit the smaller islands and secluded bays that the bigger ships can't reach. On sleepy islands like Bequia and Tobago you'll encounter none of the hassle that plagues the more mainstream islands, and you'll find idyllic beaches and lush rainforests still largely unsullied by mass tourism. Island-hopping around the Caribbean by small ship is a fantastic way to explore the region, giving you a taste of several different islands and their surprising diversity, from the natural wilderness of Dominica to the classic cars and communist murals of Cuba.

The most convenient Caribbean gateway for UK cruisers is Barbados, with regular direct flights from both Gatwick and Manchester. You can also fly direct to Miami and Fort Lauderdale, both of which serve as turnaround ports for many Caribbean cruises, though you will of course have to contend with the joys of US immigration. Other popular turnaround ports include San Juan (Puerto Rico) and Philipsburg (St Maarten), convenient for the US market but less so for the UK, with no direct flights. There are also occasional cruises departing from St Lucia, Antigua or Jamaica, as well as longer itineraries that visit the Caribbean en route to Central and South America.

Cruise ships generally head to the Caribbean as winter descends on Europe and North America, with high season running from December through to February. Temperatures rise and rain becomes more likely as you head towards the summer months, though downpours tend to be short and sharp. Hurricane season officially runs from 1 June to 30 November, and the peak usually comes in August and September, by which time you're unlikely to find many cruise ships in the Caribbean.

There is a huge amount of choice when it comes to ships, routings and ports of call, so here is our guide to eight of the best small ship cruise lines visiting the Caribbean:

1. SeaDream Yacht Club

SeaDream's laid-back, al fresco style is perfectly suited to tropical latitudes, and both of their 112-guest yachts winter in the Caribbean. Itineraries include Bridgetown round-trips focusing on the stunning Grenadines, a particularly attractive option for UK travellers, and cruises around the Virgin Islands from San Juan or St Thomas.

2. Windstar Cruises

Windstar's fleet of six small ships includes three sail-assisted yachts and three all-suite former Seabourn ships, giving you two different ways to cruise the Caribbean. Their 14-night Star Collector voyages out of Barbados are a great option if you're looking for a longer trip, and Windstar also have a handful of itineraries visiting the so-called 'ABC Islands' of Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao.

3. Seabourn

Seabourn are another good choice for those seeking a more in-depth exploration of the Caribbean, with 14-night round-trip voyages from both Barbados and St Martin. Their fleet of seven ships is the most modern of all the ultra-luxury lines, with a refined yet relaxed ambience on board that is perfectly suited to cruising the Caribbean.

4. Silversea

Silversea's classic fleet, ranging in size from 298 to 728 guests, offers a number of Caribbean options, including a handful of Barbados round-trips. There are also various itineraries embarking or disembarking in Fort Lauderdale, and Silversea have some interesting voyages combining the islands of the Caribbean with either Bermuda or Central America.

The stylish yachts of French cruise line Ponant are a great choice for something a bit different. As you might expect , the French Caribbean features prominently in their programme, with unusual turnaround ports including the island of Martinique and Cayenne, capital of French Guiana. Their itineraries range from classic Caribbean routes to expedition-style voyages exploring Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula and the amazing dive sites of Belize.

6. Sea Cloud Cruises

The majestic tall ships of Sea Cloud offer a very different cruising experience, marrying the romance of travelling under sail with high standards of service on board. Watching the crew hoisting the sails by hand is a remarkable spectacle, and you'll be the envy of other cruisers as you set sail from ports including Bridgetown, Santo Domingo and Havana.

7. Star Clippers

Star Clippers is a more affordable option for tall ship enthusiasts, with the five-masted Royal Clipper and four-masted Star Flyer both wintering in the Caribbean. Royal Clipper focuses on the Grenadines and Windward Islands and operates out of Barbados, making it the most popular option for UK cruisers. Star Flyer is based in St Martin, visiting islands including Anguilla, St Barths and the British Virgin Islands.

8. The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

Just launched, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection is an exciting new cruise line that promises to bring the Ritz-Carlton brand of luxury to the oceans for the first time. Three super-stylish yachts are perfectly suited to cruising in the sun-kissed Caribbean - the first, 298-guest Evrima, offers Bridgetown and San Juan round-trips between December to March, 456-guest Ilma and Luminara will arrive in 2024 and 2025 respectively.

9. Emerald Yacht Collection

Emerald Azzurra and Sakara are the first ships in the Emerald yacht fleet, carrying just 100 lucky travellers in sleek and stylish surroundings with a marina at the back of the yachts, allowing you to hop straight into the Caribbean waters with a host of water toys. Voyages between November and April include St John's round trips that visit Martinique, the Grenadines and St Lucia, as well as sailings to and from San Juan that call in at Saint Kitts and Nevis, the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and glamorous St Barths. There are also longer two-week voyages encompassing both the above regions, including round-trip Barbados sailings.

Are small children under age 2 allowed on Galapagos cruises?

Yes, but it depends on the ship. Each Galapagos cruise line has its own policies regarding young children, and many have minimum or recommended minimum ages. Our  Galapagos family cruises page offers more insight on recommended ages.

If I don’t snorkel on a Galapagos cruise, will I miss out?

Snorkeling is indeed an integral part of a Galapagos Islands cruise and is offered most days, along with Zodiac rides. If you are not able to snorkel, consider a ship that carries a glass-bottom boat. These specialized watercraft are a great way to see and learn about the underwater wildlife as guides are able to explain what is being seen under the boat (penguins swimming!). Ships with this added activity option will offer the best cruise to the Galapagos for anyone not able to get in the water.

What is the terrain like in the Galapagos Islands?

Terrain varies between sandy beaches, lava rocks and established paths that may be flat or hilly. Naturalist guides are very good at pacing excursions, so guests of all levels can enjoy the wildlife and have plenty of photographic opportunities. Dry landings are on solid surfaces, and wet landings require guests to step from a dinghy into water. But you may always opt out of an excursion or landing, perhaps taking a Zodiac ride with easy coastal wildlife viewing instead.

Everything more than met expectations - the boat was wonderful, the wildlife was abundant, the naturalists and crew were friendly and knowledgeable, and we saw penguins swimming, calling, and even mating!

The entire trip was excellent; a lot of different activity options everyday - hiking, snorkeling, swimming, lectures, zodiac rides - something for everyone. Lindblad was one of the most expensive trips we could choose from to see the Galapagos and it was worth EVERY penny.

I brought my 11-year-old son on this trip because he had a rough year with his parents splitting up, and he has always had an obsession with penguins. Everything more than met expectations - the boat was wonderful, the wildlife was abundant, the naturalists and crew were friendly and knowledgeable, and we saw penguins swimming, calling, and even mating! My son has never learned to swim due to a severe fear of putting his face in the water, but he was so enamored of the islands that he was able to overcome his fear and learn to snorkel. Genovesa Island was a miracle of wildlife. Sea kayaking along the cliffs was wonderful, as we could see all the animals and the cliffs themselves were beautiful. Snorkeling with penguins, sea turtles, and sharks was amazing. 

Accommodations Review

La Pinta was the perfect size and very comfortable. We chose La Pinta because of the size of the ship (not too big or too small), the itinerary (north islands), planned activities for kids, and the availability of a glass-bottom boat. Not a big fan of Quito, but that was a necessary stop. The recommended hotel in the old town area was wonderful.

Meals Review

Lots of options, all of them excellent. Staff worked very hard to accommodate my picky son's whims and were extremely respectful of my choice to be vegetarian.

Crew & Guides Review

The naturalists aboard La Pinta could not have been more professional or knowledgeable. We appreciated Paul sitting with us at lunch and getting to know us personally, and Dennis's enthusiasm about Charles Darwin was contagious. We enjoyed having several guides with different perspectives, but they were all phenomenal.

There was not one thing that could have been done better on this trip. Chris at AdventureSmith spent A LOT of time with me picking just the right ship for the Galapagos trip, and the Islander completely exceeded my expectations. The entire trip was excellent; a lot of different activity options everyday - hiking, snorkeling, swimming, lectures, zodiac rides - something for everyone. Lindblad was one of the most expensive trips we could choose from to see the Galapagos and it was worth EVERY penny. The quality of the naturalists and staff could not have been better, and I think the quality of this trip comes down to the quality of those leaders. Also, the Islander was the perfect combination of comfort and casual.

Islander was an elegant ship extremely clean, comfortable, and perfectly decked out for all the expeditions we went one. Plenty of wet suits and equipment to borrow.

FABULOUS. Wide variety of food selection which was all delicious.

The trip leader (Lynn) and the naturalists were the BEST part of the trip. They knew so much about the region; we would not have had this great an experience with any other leaders.

Great communication from Chris at various intervals before the trip; all documents and info came in timely fashion, and leading up to the trip he called to make sure we didn't have any problems, questions etc. Great customer service. Chris was awesome about getting me comfortable with the choice of vessel and explaining in detail all aspects of the trip. Great outfit.

Go for longer trip (8 days or more) rather than a shorter trip, because each island really is different from each other. Splurge to go on Lindblad.

All the arrangements were effected without a hitch. Drivers and guides met us at the airports and hotels. They were never late - in fact, they often came early. The expedition on La Pinta was just right for us - the itinerary, boat size, and amenities were perfect. Lastly, the trip to Cuenca was interesting and we very much enjoyed the architecture, restaurants, scenery, and the nearby gem of a national park.

The trip was all about the Galapagos Islands, and they did not disappoint. Seeing how treating animals with respect results in a very peaceful coexistence was eye-opening. I came away with some amazing pictures and experiences, including swimming with playful sea lions and stepping around iguanas and tortoises. That said, Cuenca was wonderful. We may very likely go back there after I retire to spend the winter months at least one year. What a beautiful city!

Quito is a big city and not particularly attractive. Our tour guide was good, but that did not change the fact that it was not somewhere we would want to spend a lot of time. We were told not to go out at night (though one restaurant had a free car service and it was worth the trip), versus in Cuenca where we went to a great restaurant about fifteen minutes from our hotel and walked back along the city streets after dark with no concern. There are some areas to avoid, but generally it seems to be a very safe city that also boasts clean tap water (though a several day acclimation period is recommended).

The hotels in Quito and Cuenca were very nice - particularly the one in Cuenca, which like many hotels there is a converted home of some wealthy resident. The accommodations on La Pinta were roomier than I had expected, with a large bed, big window and a bathroom with excellent water pressure and plentiful hot water. The boat, with 41 tourists on board, was just the right size.

The meals we had on our own on the mainland were good, particularly the breakfasts in Quito. On the boat, we enjoyed the meals very much, though breakfast and lunch buffets were clearly the highlight and the sit-down dinners were less impressive. We also had salmon our first night on the boat that could have been fresher. However, the lunches more than made up for the minor glitches.

All of our guides/naturalists on La Pinta were good. They were very knowledgeable, friendly and enthusiastic. In Quito, we had a good guide, notwithstanding she had a limited palette of locations to work with. Our guide in Cuenca was excellent too. All guides and naturalists were very proficient in English, though when we were off the boat, we tried speaking Spanish as often as we could.

The arrangements were perfect. Not a glitch in the entire nearly two weeks. I was so pleased that drivers and guides were always there when they were supposed to be there and made us feel like we were in good hands.

Andrew was great. That's why I'm planning a trip to Peru through him. Information was provided in a very clear and relatively concise manner. We kept the trip instructions close at hand, particularly when on the mainland. The only thing I did on my own without instructions to prepare for the trip was to visit the Mayo Clinic's travel clinic, where they made sure certain vaccinations were up to date and prescribed Diamox for altitude sickness in case I had an issue, as well as something for stomach upset (which was really not an issue).

I am just very happy to have found AdventureSmith. The agency and agent, Andrew, were recommended by friends of ours who were on the same boat as we were some years ago. I am looking forward to working with Andrew and AdventureSmith again when my younger daughter and I travel to Machu Picchu. I have already mentioned AdventureSmith to several people.

Just that they should do their homework to get the most out of the trip, bring the proper clothes (we traveled very light but were just fine), and check in with a doctor to make sure you don't spend days dealing with altitude sickness or have some other issue (after visiting the doctor, we bought DEET mosquito repellent which was not necessary all that often, but we are glad we did). I took Diamox and my wife (who did not take any meds) had just one day on arrival in Quito when she had a splitting headache, but then we both hiked for a couple hours at nearly 13,000 feet and we were both fine. I will definitely make sure my daughter and I have Diamox before we land in Cusco.

Wow! National Geographic/Lindblad Expeditions is the gold standard for expedition travel. I was impressed with every single aspect of my experience. I travel a lot! I have always found that people who travel similarly are personable and like-minded. My fellow travelers on this trip were no exception. I strongly believe that I have forged lifelong friendships from many of the travelers with whom I shared this amazing travel experience.

The National Geographic Endeavor II had wonderful accommodations! My cabin was roomy, comfortable, and the wonderful crew member, Olga, who took care of the cabin always did an amazing job.

The food was incredible! It was like visiting a 5-star quality restaurant at every meal! The food was not only delicious, but the presentation and plating were creative and beautiful. The wait staff was also top notch! They took the time to get to know us and even anticipated our "usual" needs.

The naturalist guides were fun, informative, knowledgeable, and they really took the time to get to know us, the travelers. The certified photo instructor was fun, informative, knowledgeable, and he really took the time to get to know us, the travelers. All of the naturalist guides were consummate professionals! And our expedition leader, Paula, was equally amazing. She was fun, informative, knowledgeable, and her daily presentations provided the perfect balance of important information, brevity and humor.

Transportation Review

I had already arranged my own flights to get to and from the destination. National Geographic/Lindblad Expeditions arranged the in-country flights. Leslie made sure I was aware of all of the transportation arrangements, putting my mind at ease.

Leslie C. was great! She provided me with all of the important information I needed. She was also very timely in getting back to me with my myriad of questions. It was great to have a dedicated Adventure Specialist, Leslie, to whom I could turn with questions.

I had another trip planned for the summer of 2021, but it was canceled/postponed due to COVID-19. In the "travel bucket list" in my mind, the Galápagos Islands were my next destination, and they were open for travel this summer. I did a little quick research, and decided that I wanted to travel with National Geographic/Lindblad Expeditions, and I found that AdventureSmith Explorations could book the trip for me.

The Galápagos Islands are a destination of a lifetime! Do not skip any excursions! Soak up every moment. You can rest when you get home, but you will probably regret missing any opportunity to explore the islands.

Our accommodations on board the Legend were very comfortable, the food was delicious, and the staff delightful. 

Dessert twice a day, and all of it delicious. There was a really nice variety of foods available. It seemed that at every meal there was something to suit most dietary requirements. I enjoyed tasting the different fruit juices available at breakfast.

Cesar, the main guide for our group, was fantastic. Dora was very enthusiastic. All of the guides were helpful.

I was very careful to pack little that was not on the packing list provided. There were a few things I wish that I had taken in addition to the clothing on the list. I would have taken something slightly more dressy than hiking clothes as many of the women on our cruise had nicer blouses and sundresses.

Make sure you check in advance to see what kind of weather to expect. When we visited at the end of March and the beginning of April it was quite warm, but I understand other times of year can definitely be cooler.

We think it would be helpful to manage the expectations of guests about what animals will be seen. The reading material suggested possibilities that weren't necessarily possible because of the season of year, or the mating habits of the wildlife. It would be helpful to come with a more realistic understanding of those circumstances. Fortunately, Andrew made the suggestion that we allow an extra day to travel to Quito because of the possibility of cancellation of flights. The Atlanta airport blackout made that advice a reality and we were grateful to have that cushion. The various groups--Metropolitan Touring and Klein tours could not have given us more of a sense of being well cared for. Connections were smooth and clear.

Coral I was perfect for us. The room was spacious. The beds were comfortable and we loved the wake up calls by Diego!! Size of gathering rooms was perfect.

The variety of fresh fruit was most welcome, as well as the plentiful offerings of fish. The desserts were varied and tasty. I particularly appreciated having my birthday celebrated with a special, delicious cake! We're from Seattle and we thought the coffee was superb! The staff was exceedingly friendly and attentive to needs.

Ernan: was very knowledgeable; however, his approachability was variable--at times aloof and at other times, very forthcoming. Norman: consistently shared his knowledge of the islands and of the flora and fauna. Lola: enthusiastic in announcements; our exposure to her was limited.

We enjoyed the sense of adventure and physical activities without excessive fuss. We felt exceptionally well taken care of.

Are you looking for the most venue-packed, resort-like Princess Cruises ships at sea? If so, you'll want to get on one of the biggest Princess cruise ships.

The biggest Princess cruise ships are, by their very nature, the Princess ships with the most onboard restaurants, bars and showrooms, as well as the most sprawling decktop pool and lounge areas. The biggest Princess ships have the biggest casinos and spas among ships in the Princess fleet and the most cabins and suites — as well as the most variation in cabin and suite types.

With room for 4,000 passengers or more, the biggest Princess ships are truly large resorts of the sort you find at the biggest vacation destination on land. If you're in the "bigger is better" camp when it comes to a resort experience, these are the Princess ships for you.

Still, Princess doesn't just operate large vessels. The Los Angeles-based cruise giant — the fifth largest cruise line in the world — also has several relatively small cruise ships in its fleet that carry just 2,000 or 3,000 people and have a more intimate feel. In some cases, these vessels are nearly 50% smaller than the size of Princess Cruises' biggest ships. These smaller ships, notably, have less deck-top pool space and fewer interior venues than the biggest Princess cruise ships. However, with fewer people on board, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

The smallest Princess cruise ships are best for vacationers who like a more intimate, less crowded resort experience.

What is the biggest Princess cruise ship?

The biggest Princess cruise ship is the 4,300-passenger Sun Princess , which is also the line's newest vessel. It just debuted in February.

Sun Princess is the first vessel in Princess Cruises' new Sphere Class of ships, which have been designed to be much bigger and more venue-packed than the vessels in the line's last new series of ships, the Royal Class.

Sun Princess measures 177,882 gross tons, which is about 22% bigger than the biggest ship in the Royal Class (the 145,000-ton Discovery Princess). Royal Class ships range in size from 142,229 to 145,000 gross tons.

Note that gross tons is a size measurement referring to interior space, not weight.

A second ship in the Sphere Class series, Star Princess, is under construction at a shipyard in Italy and will debut in October 2025 .

What is the smallest Princess cruise ship?

The smallest Princess cruise ship is the 2,000-passenger Coral Princess. Measuring just 91,267 gross tons, it's about 36% smaller than Discovery Princess, making it a significantly smaller vessel.

Coral Princess dates to 2002, a time when cruise ships were built far smaller than they are today and with far fewer venues. At 21 years old, it's also one of the two oldest vessels in the Princess fleet and will probably be phased out sometime in the next decade.

While significantly smaller than the newest Princess ships, Coral Princess still has many of the signature spaces and venues found on new Princess vessels, including an Italian eatery called Sabatini's and a steakhouse.

Entertainment venues on Coral Princess include a relatively large main theater for production shows, a secondary lounge that offers comedy shows and other entertainment, and a casino. Like other Princess ships, the top deck of the vessel is mostly devoted to pool areas with hot tubs and lounge chairs. There's also a spa.

While smaller and older than the typical Princess ship, Coral Princess has a loyal following among Princess fans who prefer smaller and more intimate ships.

Are bigger Princess cruise ships coming?

It's not clear yet. Princess currently has one new ship on order, Star Princess. But the final size of Star Princess won't be known until the vessel debuts in late 2025.

Star Princess will be the second vessel in the new Sphere Class of ships at Princess. It's likely to be very similar in size to the first vessel in the series, the new Sun Princess. But it's not uncommon for each new vessel in a series to be slightly bigger than the one before.

Star Princess is currently under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard near Monfalcone, Italy.

Note that this isn't the first time Princess has named a ship Sun Princess or Star Princess. Both are recycled names from past Princess ships. Princess operated smaller vessels under the Sun Princess and Star Princess names up until 2020.

What's the difference between bigger and smaller Princess ships?

The biggest Princess cruise ships have room for more onboard venues and attractions than smaller Princess ships. That makes them more alluring for vacationers who prefer a big resort experience with lots of options as compared to a stay at a smaller resort.

On the biggest Princess vessels, the Sphere Class and Royal Class vessels, you'll find the largest piazza-like central atriums in the Princess fleet surrounded by lots of bars and restaurants; multiple entertainment venues for live shows, comedy acts and more; and expansive pool decks with more space for sunning than you'll find on smaller Princess vessels.

You'll also find some only-on-the-Royal-class-ships extras, including, on some of the Royal Class ships, a glass-floored "SeaWalk" that extends over the side of the vessel.

Princess' smaller cruise ships also are generally its older cruise ships and lack some of the above features, which are more typical of newer ships. These smaller Princess ships have a more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships, and they hold fewer people.

While Sphere Class and Royal Class ships can hold more than 4,500 passengers with every berth full, the line's smaller vessels (particularly the relatively small Island Princess and Coral Princess) often sail with just 2,000 or so passengers on board.

That makes the smaller Princess ships a good choice for someone who wants to try Princess but isn't eager to travel with huge crowds. The smallest ships in the Princess fleet thus appeal to a subset of Princess fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive to sail on, on a per-day basis.

In addition, because of their size, the smallest ships at Princess Cruises are able to operate itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of Sun Princess.

Carnival cruise ship rescues 25 people in small boat off Pacific coast of Mexico

R escue personnel with the cruise ship Carnival Radiance rescued 25 people from a small boat off the Pacific coast of Mexico after responding to a call from the U.S. Coast Guard on Saturday.

The Coast Guard contacted officers aboard the cruise ship, which was sailing toward Ensenada, Mexico, about a distress call involving a small vessel on Saturday afternoon, according to Carnival.

The ship was immediately routed toward the location provided by the Coast Guard. The team was able to rescue 25 people, including three children onto Carnival Radiance, according to the cruise ship line.

Carnival's team offered help such as food, water, and medical assistance to the people rescued and arranged a rendezvous with Coast Guard officials, according to Carnival.

On Friday, Carnival Radiance left its homeport of Long Beach, California, for a three-day cruise. The rescue operation did not impact its schedule and sailing remains on time.

Carnival Cruise Line Ship Rescues 25 People Stranded at Sea Off Pacific Coast

According to a statement, the Carnival Radiance was sailing toward Ensenada, Mexico on Saturday afternoon when the Coast Guard informed the officers on board about a distress call involving a small vessel.

The ship was immediately routed toward the location provided by the USCG and the rescue was quickly completed, with all 25 people, including three children, stranded on the boat safely welcomed onto Carnival Radiance.

The team onboard offered to meet any immediate needs among the rescued group, including food, water and medical assistance, and coordinated a rendezvous with Coast Guard officials.

The Carnival Radiance left its homeport of Long Beach, Calif. on Friday for a three-day cruise, and its sailing remains on schedule.

This form of travel is incredibly convenient (read: no need to pack and unpack), and everything you need can be found right on board — ultimately taking the stress out of trip planning. Plus, with hundreds of ships at sea across dozens of lines, there’s a cruise out here for every type of traveler. Fortunately, cruising doesn’t have to cost a small fortune, and many budget-conscious travelers may opt to set sail for their next trip. Below, we’ve rounded up the best cruise lines offering affordable fares coupled with value-packed inclusions to stretch your dollar further. We’ve also tapped some expert cruise specialists to share their top tips and tricks to help you save money both on and off the ship.

Virgin Voyages

This adults-only cruise line from Richard Branson — which also happens to be a Travel + Leisure World’s Best Award winner — offers excellent value. In fact, according to T+L A-list cruise advisor and Q Cruise + Travel founder and president Rob Clabbers, Virgin Voyages fares “include more than on most mainstream large-ship cruise lines.” For example, he says, “Virgin fares include internet access, gratuities, all meals — there are no cover charges for its restaurants that on most other lines would be considered specialty restaurants.” Beverages like soft drinks, coffee, and tea are also included, as are snacks, mezze at the aft terrace, and group workout classes. Best of all, there are no pricey beverage packages. “Instead,” says Clabbers, cruisers — or, as Virgin calls them, sailors — can buy their own reasonably priced drinks (think: beers from $6, $10 cocktails, and wines by the glass under $11) a la carte. Additionally, with some promotions , the cruise line throws in a “ bar tab ” credit that can be used towards drinks.

Another World’s Best Award winner — and WBA Hall of Fame Honoree, no less — this fan-favorite ocean line is renowned for refined ships, serene ambiance, and exceptional service. Moreover, per Clabbers, passengers can choose from “optional packages to help customize a passenger’s trip that provide savings over buying things separately.” For an extra $60 per day, consider Princess Plus, which offers perks like Wi-Fi for one device per guest, gratuities, fitness classes (two per sailing), and beverages like bottled water, specialty coffee, soft drinks, and juice. Alternatively, for $80 per day, passengers can spring on the Princess Premier package, which features the same beverages plus specialty dining (two per sailing), unlimited fitness classes, premium desserts, reserved theater seating, and Wi-Fi (four devices per guest).

Norwegian Cruise Line 

Norwegian Cruise Line is a favorite among families of all ages for its over-the-top entertainment and activities (think: go-karting, Broadway-caliber productions, and so on). “While Norwegian Cruise Line may price slightly higher than some of its competitors, you need to consider the Free at Sea package,” says travel advisor Jennifer Travis of Marvelous Mouse Travels . She goes on to describe the promotion as a “game-changer when it comes to cruising” since it includes perks like a “free open bar (up to $1,400 in savings), free specialty dining (up to $180 in savings), free Wi-Fi (up to $200 in savings), and a $50 discount on excursions.” Other Free at Sea perks include 70 percent off second guests, free third and fourth guests (on select dates), and free airfare (per the cruise line’s website: “ Pay airfare for one guest, and you'll automatically lock in roundtrip flights for two ”). Also, you can’t go wrong with the Free at Sea Plus package, which includes a wider selection of beverages, more specialty dining, unlimited Wi-Fi, and additional shore excursion credits. Before booking, be sure to check the line’s full selection of deals , which run the gamut from half-off deposits to $150 cruise credits and more.

Royal Caribbean

Zip lines, water slides, surfing simulators, ice skating, rock climbing walls: Find all this and more aboard (most) Royal Caribbean ships — and, best of all, they’re complimentary! Ideal for fun- and adventure-loving travelers of all ages — read: kids and kids-at-heart alike — it’s pretty much impossible to be bored while cruising on this World’s Best Award-winning mega-ship line . Additionally, according to Travis, Royal Caribbean “offers some of the best short itineraries,” some of which clock in at under $200 per person for two-night sailings. Longer itineraries, including a seven-night Bahamas sailing aboard one of the line’s newest ships, Odyssey of the Seas , clock in at under $600 per person. The line also offers an abundance of deals , including up to $600 off sailings, 60 percent off second guests, and more.

“ Carnival Cruise Line is known for its competitive pricing without cutting back on the onboard activities or various dining options, thus making them an attractive option to budget-conscious cruisers,” explains Travis. For example, many itineraries, including a four-night Bahamas cruise from Miami , clock in at just over $150 per person. Additionally, says the travel advisor, “Carnival sails to a wide variety of destinations from so many local ports that you almost do not need to fly to your cruise ship anymore, which is another huge savings given the cost (and stress) flights can add to any vacation.” Keep an eye out for frequent flash sales for even more savings.

Booking early is an easy way to save on your next cruise vacation . “Typically,” says Travis, “the best pricing on a cruise is when the schedule is first released.” And, while you could wait for a last-minute deal, “you may not get the room category that you want.” Similarly, Clabbers says that flexibility is key when it comes to finding — and scoring — the best cruise deals . For example, he previously told T+L that if you are “very flexible and are looking for a standard room on a large ship on an itinerary that repeats week after week, you are more likely to find a promotional fare.”

Conversely, giving up some of that flexibility sometimes pays off. According to Clabbers, select cruise lines will offer lower fares to those who opt for a nonrefundable deposit instead of a refundable one. Finally, you may also consider cruising in shoulder season or even low season. Sure, the weather won’t be perfect, but the fewer crowds and cheaper fares more than make up for that, especially if you’re on a budget.

While your tab can quickly rack up once on board, there are several savvy ways to save money. For one, consider bringing your own booze. According to Travis, “Many cruise lines allow their guests to bring a specific amount of alcohol or nonalcoholic beverages onboard the ships, which can help save you money while you are on the ship.” Additionally, ​​Michele Benard , another travel advisor at Marvelous Mouse Travels, advises packing your own necessities from home — like Advil, Tums,  motion sickness medicine, and after-sun lotion — as opposed to buying them on board at a much higher price. You’ll also want to skip the souvenirs at the onboard gift shop, which tend to be more expensive than those you’d find in port.

Benard also recommends taking advantage of “all the free activities on the cruise ships,” which can include everything from water slides to trivia game shows. Pro tip: “Stay onboard during a port day, and the lines won’t be as long.” On a similar note, spa treatments tend to be less expensive on port days, so those craving some R&R — that is, sans breaking the bank — may consider booking a service during this time.

Finally, says Clabbers, save money on your next cruise by enlisting the help of an onboard cruise consultant to select your next sailing. “You will typically receive an onboard credit or savings on your next cruise, and your own travel advisor will be alerted so they can help you plan your vacation.”

Margaritaville at Sea Islander inaugural cruise scheduled for June 14

The inaugural cruise for the Islander is scheduled for June 14 out of the Port of Tampa Bay.

The Islander underwent "extensive reimagining" at the Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Northern Ireland, before beginning its three-week trip to Florida May 19, according to a Margaritaville at Sea Facebook post.

The custom styling is "reminiscent of the sand, sea and sky" and includes Margaritaville’s signature bedding, pillows and linens.

There are more than 700 Breezy Balcony staterooms, Grand Terrace Suites, "luxurious" Corner Suites, and "ultra-exclusive" Islander Signature Suites.

Christopher Ivy, CEO of Margaritaville at Sea, said the purchase of the second ship was to accommodate requests from customers for longer itineraries and new ports of call.

The Islander will offer four- and five-night cruises to Key West and Mexico, with stops in Cozumel and Progreso. 

Coming in 2025 will be six- and seven-night voyages to Belize, Jamaica and Grand Cayman, according to a news release.

Margaritaville at Sea is a new venture with the owners of the former Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line and Margaritaville Enterprises, according to its website.

The company launched Margaritaville at Sea Paradise out of Palm Beach in May 2022.
