Siam Safari and Elephant Trekking in Phuket

Elephant Trekking is one of the top things to do with kids in Phuket, Thailand.   When visiting Thailand, you can’t help but notice elephants everywhere, from elephant motifs on souvenirs to wooden elephant statues.  Elephants are revered in Thailand, and going on an elephant safari is something that many would love to include in their travel bucket list.

Phuket, Thailand

However, after reading numerous comments about how unethical elephant tourism is, we were a little apprehensive.  Fortunately, the elephant camp at Siam Safari Nature Tours is an elephant camp (and the only one in Phuket and Southern Thailand) that is certified by the Royal Thai Government and follows international safety standards.

Elephant Trekking at Siam Safari

Before the ride, we were introduced to the elephants and their professional handlers (also known as mahouts).

Phuket Thailand

Each elephant can take 2 persons on average, or 1 adult and 2 children, excluding the mahout.  The elephant trek is about 30 to 45 minutes through a lush jungle.

Siam Safari Phuket

About halfway through the trek, we were treated with a fabulous view of Chalong Bay and its many islands.

Coffee Break

After the elephant trekking, a light snack of Thai coconut and corn pancakes were served together with aromatic Thai coffee or tea.

Thai Coffee

While having our coffee break, the kiddos got to see how a water buffalo ploughs through a rice paddy field.

Phuket Thailand

We were also given a chance to ride on a wooden cart pulled by the buffalo.

Learning about Rice Farming

The kiddos learned a little bit about rice farming at Siam Safari.  They were able to see different stages of growth of the rice paddy fields.

Phuket, Thailand

They also learned the traditional way rice is processed after harvest.

Phuket, Thailand

After much pounding and tossing, they saw how rice grains get separated from the husks.

Thai Curry Cooking Demonstration

Next, we learned how Thai curry is prepared.

Phuket, Thailand

We also learned many things about coconut, from coconut husking, grating, and producing coconut oil and toasted coconut.

Phuket, Thailand

After the curry and coconut oil demonstrations, we visited a rubber plantation and learned how rubber tapping is done, and how the rubber sap is used to produce natural rubber.

Meet Siam Safari’s Young Elephants

Phuket, Thailand

At Siam Safari, visitors had the the opportunity to interact with the young elephants.  My girl was happy to be given a chance to feed the baby elephant.

Phuket, Thailand

The young elephants put on a show for its guests and even demonstrated their ability to paint.

Phuket Thailand

We ended our memorable Siam Safari tour with a Thai buffet lunch overlooking the hills of Phuket.

We went with 3 children age from 2-4 years old. Adult and kids enjoyed it thoroughly, the views you get alone is worth the whole experience. Guides provided comprehensive explanation on the elephants. Visitors should be dressed and wear suitable shoes during the trekking as you would be required to walk around the area which can be quite tricky if you are wearing heels and flats- comfortable shoes such as sneakers are advised. There are no cafes /restaurant if you opt for the basic tour so prepare to bring snacks for you lil ones to feed them during the tour. The place provides pick ups from hotel but consider private transfers from your hotel as their van can get full and stuffy particularly on a warm and busy day - very uncomfortable for the young ones. A must go when in Phuket!

We went with kids ages 12 and 14. I was a bit skeptical at first, as Phuket has a proliferation of animal shows, etc that look exploitative and not very interesting. We wanted to see the elephants, though, and something culturally educational for the kids. We went on the strength of Tripadvisor reviews. We were not disappointed and it was totally worth it. Even our semi jaded teens thought it was "really good". The side sessions on thai coffee, rice cultivation, coconut milk and oil production, and rubber tree sap tapping initially seemed a bit random and kitschy. That said, we found the sessions interesting and help put thai history and culture in context away from the bright lights and over developed tourism of Phuket. The curry-making session was especially tasty and informative. You figure what's the big deal, curry is curry, but seeing how you make it with the basic ingredients and tasting the freshly made product was eye opening. The highlight of course is the elephant ride. The mahouts are very patient and make sure family groups on separate elephants have a chance to circle around and take pictures of each other. It's kind of a sad footnote to the demise of the logging industry, which had to happen anyway, but at least at this camp this vanishing lifestyle lingers on in a non abusive environment. This was a half day well spent. Highly recommended.

We had a great morning out with siam safari. We searched for ages to find a reputable company that looked after elephants and we were still nervous about it up until we arrived. There was no need to worry, the elephants here were well looked after and seemed very happy. They were fed lots, taken in to rest after their elephant trek and they had a great relationship with their mahout. There were no chains or sharp objects anywhere near the elephants and during the trek the elephants were allowed to stop and eat or wander off where they wanted to which was great to see. It was a great day out and we had so much fun. Siam Safari is a fantastic company who take great pride in their conservation work and care for elephants. I wish we could have booked a longer day with them.

Like many other reviewers, I had concerns regarding the treatment of the elephants at this sort of attraction, so I did the research and also talked to our tour rep (Buffalo Tours) who said that this one was above board and recommended. We have just got back to our hotel. There are no longer any wild elephants in Thailand ( although there are a few in Burma/Myanmar apparently, which may cross the border). All the 5000 or so elephants left in Thailand are in captivity, most put to work in the tourist industry. The elephants at the Siam Safari camp certainly seem to be content and kindly treated. The entire half day visit was so much better than I expected, it was well organised, varied, interactive and fun. First, after meeting our lovely guide, Miang, we tried Thai coffee and tea, and coconut pancakes. Then we were introduced to two very docile water buffalo, and saw them ploughing. We rode in a buffalo cart and then were shown how rice and coconuts are traditionally grown and prepared. After that we were shown the ingredients of Thai curry pastes, how to make a green curry, and were given samples to try. Then it was time to meet the beautiful elephants and their personal mahouts and to have an unforgettable 30 minute ride on a trail through the forest, with stops for photos at stunning viewpoints. We could feed fruit to the elephants afterwards, before paying a visit to two young elephants aged three and seven years, and learning about their care and history. We were then given an excellent and varied Thai lunch, before our visit ended and we headed 'home'. I highly recommend this attraction, It is wonderful and so well done. Incidentally, wne were advised to take water, but in fact you don't need to as it is available at several points. There are also clean loos and good handwashing facilities. Our guide Miang was fun, informative and knowledgeable. Definitely do this excursion if you visit Phuket!

We had our 10 month old, 5 yr old and 4 yr old and we all loved it! Well organized and scheduled and interesting. Even our 5 yr old thought this was an amazing adventure! We enjoyed learning about rice, coconuts, elephants, curry and Thai culture. The staff was friendly and helpful and the food was delicious! We really enjoyed the entire event!

Our tour with Siam Safari absolutely made our trip in Phuket! We did the 4in1 Safari with Lunch Cruise and it was worth every penny - what an adventure! Our tour guide (Au Au) was spectacular and we had such a great time with her and everyone else on our tour. Riding the elephants through the forest was amazing but I have to say, the lunch cruise at the end was breathtaking. If you're debating whether or not to do this portion of the trip, I highly suggest doing it, it was so much fun and so beautiful! When we come back to Thailand, we will probably do this tour again. Thank you for such an amazing experience! (Oh and they pick you up/drop you off from your hotel, wherever it is - what a great value!)

Siam Safari is a great morning activity while staying on Phuket. The staff are wonderful, and the experience riding an elephant is worth doing. The elephant ride last about 45 minutes, and then there is the opportunity to feed the elephants and watch a young elephant show. What a great way to get up close and spend some time with Asian elephants.
