Volkswagen Cars w/ Adaptive Cruise Control (All 11 Models)

Adaptive cruise control has been available mostly in luxury vehicles but is now common in many mainstream cars, including Volkswagens.

The Volkswagen cars, SUVs, and EVs in this post have adaptive cruise control or conventional cruise control system.

Check the corresponding tables to see the relevant model years when the system became available.

volkswagen

Adaptive Cruise Control vs. Cruise Control

The more-basic cruise control in older Volkswagen cars helps the vehicle maintain a steady cruising speed.

Adaptive cruise control (ACC) enhances the conventional cruise control system by adjusting the car’s speed to match the vehicle ahead, slowing or accelerating to the set speed when appropriate.

Newer Volkswagens have the IQ Drive technology that automatically maintains a set distance from the vehicle ahead, with the ability to brake on its own to avoid a potential collision.

Rival mainstream car makers that produce popular models with adaptive cruise control (ACC) include:

  • Toyota vehicles with ACC .
  • Kia vehicles with ACC .
  • Honda vehicles with ACC .
  • Hyundai vehicles with ACC .
  • Nissan vehicles with ACC .
  • Ford vehicles with ACC .

Volkswagen Cars with Adaptive Cruise Control

#1 volkswagen golf.

Although it’s no longer in production after 2021, the Golf hatchback remains a compelling purchase as a used car, with its excellent ride quality and versatile body – even the more-powerful Golf R is a competent daily driver .

All Volkswagen Golf models from 2003 to 2021 had standard cruise control that enabled a steady highway cruising speed.

Only in 2002 when the system first became available was cruise control not available at all trim levels.

#2 Volkswagen Polo

Although the VW Polo isn’t available on American shores, it’s a popular little car sold globally in Europe and many other countries.

Except for the latest generation that debuted in 2022, Volkwagen Polos from 2009 to 2021 had cruise control in the pricier variants, and all pre-2009 models only had the system as an optional add-on.

#3 Volkswagen Beetle

The discontinued Volkswagen Beetle had cruise control as a standard provision from 2012 to 2019.

#4 Volkswagen Jetta

In a class with all-stars like Honda Civic , Toyota Corolla , Hyundai Elantra , and Kia Forte – all with adaptive cruise control – the VW Jetta seems somewhat mediocre.

Still, from 2019 onwards, Volkswagen Jettas have had adaptive cruise control (ACC) in their higher trims and the more-basic cruise control in the lower ones.

Cruise control is standard across all Volkswagen Jettas from 2003 to 2018, with the 2001 and 2002 models only having the system in the more-expensive trims.

#5 Volkswagen Passat

2021 and 2022 Volkswagen Passat sedans have standard adaptive cruise control, while models from 2016 to 2020 only had the system in the higher trims.

Cruise control is standard across all Volkswagen Passat from 2001 to 2015, and older models before that period do not have the cruise management system.

2022 marks this midsize car’s final model year stateside.

#6 Volkswagen Arteon

This 2019 debutant is a unique large hatchback with sleek styling and sporty handling.

All Volkswagen Arteon models have at least the basic cruise control system, with the higher trims carrying the more-sophisticated adaptive cruise control (ACC) before ACC became standard from 2022 onwards.

Volkswagen SUVs with Adaptive Cruise Control

#7 volkswagen taos.

Since its introduction in 2022, the Volkswagen Taos subcompact SUV has had adaptive cruise control in the upper trims and cruise control in the lower ones.

#8 Volkswagen Tiguan

This model stands out among small SUVs with its three rows of seats.

Volkswagen Tiguans from 2018 onwards have had adaptive cruise control or cruise control, depending on the trim level.

All VW Tiguan models from 2009 to 2017 had standard cruise control.

#9 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

This SUV is a two-row version of the VW Atlas.

Since its 2020 debut, the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport has had adaptive cruise control in the upper trims and conventional cruise control in the lower ones.

#10 Volkswagen Atlas

This SUV is a three-row midsize, seating up to seven.

Like the two-row variant, the Volkswagen Atlas with an extra row of seats has cruise control in the base trim and the more sophisticated adaptive cruise control in the costlier ones.

Volkswagen Electric Vehicle with Adaptive Cruise Control

#11 volkswagen id.4.

As the German marque’s pioneering electric SUV, Volkswagen ID.4 models have adaptive cruise control with lane centering across all trim levels.

New Volkswagen Polo 2021 review

The facelifted volkswagen polo supermini channels even more golf dna.

New car deals logo

The Volkswagen Polo 's updates are effective, adding extra style to mimic the Golf, as well as more tech inside, reflecting what supermini buyers want. You’ll have to pay for it, because in mid-spec Style trim the Polo is a pricey option, but its refined and mature personality, strong practicality and a sense of fun on the right road mean it’s a solid all-rounder. Exactly as a supermini should be.

The evolution of the supermini is a fascinating story. Small five-door cars have now developed to the point where many, such as this new Volkswagen Polo , can occasionally operate as a family car , thanks to their growth in size.

This was also true of the pre-facelift Polo , so VW has focused on maximising the car’s already-impressive level of maturity by adding more big-car tech that you’d traditionally find on the larger Golf or even the Passat .

Best superminis 2023

In fact, the Polo is more like the Golf than ever before. A subtle exterior styling makeover includes new matrix-LED headlights as standard on this mid-spec Style model, as well as a full-width LED running light across the front. Its nose is sleeker and the rear light clusters are sharper in their look, too – again, more like its bigger brother – but the greater advances have come inside, with more influence from the Golf than in the past.

There’s lots of kit, including a 10.25-inch digital dashboard and VW’s Discover Nav infotainment system, plus wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay . Android Auto also features.

Volkswagen Polo - rear

The infotainment works well, with bright graphics and swift responses to prods of the screen, exactly as you’d want, and without the frustrating interface of the Golf 8. Part of this is down to the Polo retaining separate climate controls lower down on the centre stack, although they have moved to touch-sensitive buttons, which is still a retrograde step in our book.

Dual-zone climate control is standard, along with adaptive cruise, autonomous emergency braking, all-round parking sensors and VW’s Travel Assist semi-autonomous driver-assistance tech that’ll keep you in your lane on the motorway.

These were all features reserved for large executive cars and SUVs not so long ago, but now you can buy them on a £20,785 supermini. And yes, that is on the pricier side, but monthly payments of £261 on a four-year deal limited to a fair 10,000 miles per year, with just over £2,000 down (plus £750 from VW), are much more bearable.

For that money you get a very refined, grown-up small car. The 1.0 TSI 95 engine is a known quantity, offering 94bhp. As before, the three-cylinder turbocharged unit isn’t that willing to rev, but it does have a torquey mid-range, with 175Nm on offer, which promotes a more relaxed driving style. It therefore means you move the Polo along at a leisurely pace; we wouldn’t say lazily, just that the Polo’s grown-up feel means that you’re not tempted to hustle it like a Ford Fiesta , for example.

Volkswagen Polo - dash

This is in keeping with the car’s comfortable chassis set-up, which rides bumps relatively well, offering a controlled and fairly well isolated ride in town. The steering is light, which doesn’t affect the Polo’s high-speed stability, its planted feel, or your confidence, and nor does it make it obviously more agile. But it just feels keener to turn, with a decent resistance-free feel. It’s nimble.

On the motorway the engine fades away into the background, with the driver- assistance tech helping further if you choose to use it. It’s nice to have it in a small model such as this, but we wouldn’t say it’s totally necessary, even if it will improve safety. Let’s call it a potential welcome secondary benefit, given that the Polo is large enough to occasionally operate as family transport.

Even with only a five-speed transmission it isn’t turning too many revs at a cruise. The quiet engine is matched by relatively good isolation from road and wind noise for a supermini, which is yet another element in a mature package. It matches our current class favourite, the Renault Clio , on this front, which is a good performance.

It’s also a practical small car, offering a fair level of space in the rear and a 333-litre boot, which is only 48 litres behind the Golf. Quality is mostly good for a supermini, too, but then, you’d expect it given the price.

The Polo should be affordable to run, another key trait any good supermini needs to offer. VW claims 53.8mpg and 119g/km of CO2 emissions, and we saw more than 45mpg on a mixed test route, so the Polo produces the goods, just as it needs to. But the class is incredibly tight, so we’ll see how it gets on against its main rivals soon.

First review new Volkswagen Polo (2021): everyone on the adaptive cruise control

Diego Meadows

The Netherlands loves the Volkswagen Polo. Its recent facelift doesn’t seem to matter much, but all the small changes make the new Polo just that little bit tougher, more modern and more convenient. You can read how that works in this review.

First review new Volkswagen Polo (2021): everyone on the adaptive cruise control

What is striking about the Volkswagen Polo (2021)?

The renewed Polo shows Golf features. At the rear, the similarities are greatest: the taillights are no longer simple squares, but Golf-like light units with a spur in the trunk lid. And as with other new Volkswagen models, a logo on the back is no longer enough. The word ‘Polo’ is underneath it. At the front, the new, sporty lower bumper stands out. In combination with the illuminated strip (optional) that connects the new LED headlights, you can easily mistake the renewed Polo for a Golf.

In the interior, analog makes way for digital. There is a screen behind the wheel of every Polo. The normal Digital Cockpit is 20 centimeters in size, but we recommend paying 310 euros extra for the 26 centimeters Digital Cockpit Pro on which the navigation map also appears. Of course you have to order a Polo with a navigation system.

The two big new features this facelift is all about are IQ.Light and IQ.Drive. The first is a hip term for LED Matrix headlights that do not dazzle fellow road users (standard on the Style). IQ.Drive is a combination of adaptive cruise control and active lane assist. This means that the Polo automatically stays in the middle of the lane and maintains the speed and distance set by you. For example, the new Polo already drives semi-autonomously from the Life version (one version above the basic version). He does that smoothly; the speed controller doesn’t panic when a car pulls in in front of you.

First review new Volkswagen Polo (2021): everyone on the adaptive cruise control

What’s good about the new Volkswagen Polo?

Volkswagen is under the spell of digitization, but does not trot on. We’re thrilled that there are regular buttons on the steering wheel instead of the touch-trampling you find in other modern Volkswagens.

At the same time, the designers could not resist to exchange the cluster of physical buttons of the climate control for touch buttons and sliders. We don’t think that’s such a disaster, because you clearly feel the dimple where you have to put your finger in and the red and blue icons, you see from the corner of your eye. Because of this you almost always hit.

The Volkswagen Polo remains a beautiful total package. Among the minor adjustments is the same car as four years ago. Its pluses do not expire. The one-litre turbo engine is well suited to its tasks, the cabin is still above average spacious, the chassis is comfortable and the steering remains just as predictable as your slightly racist neighbour.

First review new Volkswagen Polo (2021): everyone on the adaptive cruise control

What could be improved about the Volkswagen Polo facelift?

The new Volkswagen Polo is not electric in any way. It’s not even available as a mild hybrid. Now that the electric revolution is raging so fiercely in the car world, that is strange. Especially since Volkswagen itself is taking the lead with the ID.3 and ID.4. The reason why there are no electrified versions of the Polo (or the Skoda Fabia or the Seat Ibiza) is simple: it’s too expensive, because the platform doesn’t lend itself to it.

As a result, there is little to choose from in the engine area: a 95 hp turbo engine with a five-speed manual transmission (!) or the 1.0 TSI with 110 hp and a seven-speed automatic transmission. That DSG transmission likes quiet drivers; when we spontaneously floor the accelerator, it needs a lot of time to think. The 1.0 MPI base engine is discussed below. Where is the familiar six-speed gearbox in combination with 115 hp from the previous Polo? It won’t come back.

The adaptive cruise control of IQ.Drive has predictive abilities, dictated by the route in the navigation system. The idea is that the car slows down for approaching roundabouts and the like. But those gifts don’t work flawlessly. When the navigation system asks us to leave the highway, the Polo signals that the exit further on is a bend. To our horror, he brakes immediately on the exit to 70 km/h – the bend is still far away. As soon as we hit ’70’, it falls back to the ‘previous’ speed of 100 km/h and accelerates at full speed into the now reached bend. Polo, what are you doing right now? You can disable this function.

First review new Volkswagen Polo (2021): everyone on the adaptive cruise control

When will the Volkswagen Polo (2021) come and what is the price?

The renewed Polo is already at the dealer and Volkswagen has devised an ingenious pricing policy. For example, your attention is drawn to a base price of under 20 mille, but then you get the Polo 1.0 MPI and you do not want that engine. It has no turbo and is only 80 hp and 93 Nm strong. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h takes three weeks. Moreover, you do not want the basic version but the Life of 23,890 euros, because it has the IQ.Drive package with adaptive cruise control and other luxury items.

Basically you’re a thief of your own wallet if you don’t upgrade the Life version to the Life Business. For 900 euros more you get a larger touchscreen with navigation, a wireless phone charger and parking sensors front and rear. Plus heated front seats – ideal for quick warm-up in autumn and winter. Such a chic car naturally requires beautiful wheels and a cheerful or cool color. The result: 25,872 euros. Despite the hefty amount, you are still happy with yourself, because you have made smart choices. Even if you say so yourself.

First review new Volkswagen Polo (2021): everyone on the adaptive cruise control

What do I think of the Volkswagen Polo (2021)?

Everything about how the new Volkswagen Polo drives, sits and feels is familiar and correct. When the current Polo came on the market in 2017, it was already such an adult model that you could comfortably cover large distances. Now even more so, since most versions have ID.Drive with adaptive cruise control. And thanks to its outward resemblance to the Golf, the Polo’s design is now as mature as its handling.

Behold: it’s the facelifted Volkswagen Polo

Polo gets new look, semi-autonomous driver aids and fancy LED lights

cruise control volkswagen polo 2021

Welcome one and all to the newly facelifted Volkswagen Polo. And yes, before you ask, there will be a new Polo GTI. Not until 2022 though, so back to the standard car for now…

Unsurprisingly it looks much the same as the existing sixth-gen Polo that’s been with us since 2017. You can tell the new one apart by its new head- and taillights, full-width DRL and reprofiled bumpers. Pictured here in  schporty  R-Line trim, in which the updated car looks its newest, the facelifted Polo is set to arrive in the UK towards the end of this year.

The big news is all tech. The new Polo gets LED headlights and taillights as standard, but you can upgrade to clever ‘Matrix’ LEDs up front. Moreover you can specify VW’s ‘Travel Assist’ driver aid that bundles together adaptive cruise control and lane-assist to keep you a set distance from the car ahead and centred in your lane. Clever stuff for a supermini.

Inside there’s a new steering wheel – with actual buttons, not touch-sensitive panels like the Golf’s – and VW’s latest-gen connected infotainment system. Some versions get the touch-sensitive climate controls from the new Tiguan and Arteon.

There’s only one engine – a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol with 79, 94 or 108bhp. Manual and DSG automatic gearboxes are available.

VW has realigned the Polo range – the entry-level trim is called ‘Life’, then you’ve got ‘Style’ and ‘R-Line’. We’re promised standard spec is generous regardless of which one you go for.

Fancy one of these over the recently facelifted Seat Ibiza (the same car underneath, of course) or mighty Ford Fiesta?

2021 Volkswagen Polo 85TSI Comfortline road test review

The Volkswagen Polo 85TSI Comfortline

Posted January 18, 2022

Talk may be cheap, but word-of-mouth recommendations are priceless, and VW's Polo has got people talking for all the right reasons.

The VW Polo is one of the best drives in the light car class, competing with the MG MG3 and Kia Rio.

Though it was launched back in 2018, it's selling in bigger numbers now than it ever has, largely as a result of satisfied owners promoting the product.

It’s the stealth fighter of the light car segment, outselling the Toyota Yaris, Mazda2 and Suzuki Swift in the past 12 months. It achieves that on the basis of smart interior packaging, sharp looks, solid safety credentials and better than competent on-road manners.

A mid-life update is due to arrive in Australia in March or April of 2022 and that will mark the end of the cheapest Polo variant, along with price rises for the rest of the range which VW is attributing to more standard equipment.

So if you’re interested, now’s a good time to be talking to your local dealer as they look to shift existing stock ahead of the new model’s arrival.

On this page

What do you get for the price?

  • How safe is it?
  • What's it like inside?
  • What's under the bonnet?
  • Is it efficient?
  • How does it drive?

Should I buy one?

The VW Polo starts at $19,200 before on-road costs for the soon-to-be-discontinued Trendline version.

Standard equipment includes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capability, along with Bluetooth, an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, a reversing camera with guidelines, a pair of USB-C ports and driver fatigue detection. There’s a full-size spare wheel beneath the 351-litre boot, which is a rarity in the class.

The default transmission is a five-speed manual, hooked up to a turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine delivering 70kW and 175Nm to the front wheels.

Step up to the Comfortline at $20,890 and the engine’s output increases to 85kW/200Nm, along with a set of 15-inch alloy wheels in place of the steel/hubcap hoops on the base model. The standard manual transmission picks up a cog to six-gears, the headlamps and wipers automatically come on, there’s a self-dimming rear-vision mirror, rear passengers pick up reading lights and a pair of USB ports and the cloth upholstery looks and feels classier.

The top-spec Style sees the price jump to $25,690 but the seven-speed dual-clutch auto is standard and the equipment list extends to 16-inch alloy wheels, a 300-watt beats sound system, dual-zone airconditioning, wireless phone charging, satellite navigation, tinted windows and a digital driver’s display.

Be aware the boot-mounted subwoofer for the sound system trims cargo space by almost 50 litres.

Those looking for a bit more spice in their baby hatch can turn to the sporty GTI version packing a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine and a price tag starting at $32,890 plus on-road costs.

An up-front “care plan” to cover servicing the Polo will set you back $1850 for the first five years or 75,000km.

A five-year warranty is standard and there are a variety of option packages. The two we’d be considering are the front and rear dashcams and the $1500 driver assistance system that bundles adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, semi-automated parking and distance sensors front and rear.

How safe is the Volkswagen Polo?

The Polo is a five-star car, according to ANCAP. It was tested in 2018 and earned 96 per cent for adult occupant protection, 85 per cent for child protection and 76 per cent for vulnerable road-user protection.

Safety assist was rated at 59 per cent, with the absence of a lane-monitoring system costing the Polo points.

What’s the VW Polo like inside?

Sophistication isn’t generally a hallmark of the light-car class given how price-conscious buyers in this segment are. Volkswagen bucks the trend with the Polo, which presents as a more mature car than most.

The fit-and-finish is as good as you’ll find this side of the prestige vehicles. There are some harder plastics below the eye-line but those you see and touch are on the money and the resolution of the touchscreen is class-leading.

A digital speedo is a must-have in Victoria and the Polo doesn’t disappoint. It is also surprisingly spacious and will happily accommodate four adults. Rear leg and head room is more than adequate.

In an ideal world, I’d like to see a fold-out centre armrest with cupholders in the middle of the rear seats and a set of air vents for those in the back

What’s under the bonnet?

All regular Polo variants use a 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine. The Trendline’s powerplant is detuned to deliver 70kW and 175Nm, while the Comfortline and Style enjoy 85kW and 200Nm.

The engine is a good match to this car, with enough performance to keep pace with metropolitan traffic.

It is refined across the rev range and has the typically rorty exhaust note that is a feature of triple-cylinder engines. The well-insulated cabin means you only distantly hear it, but it sounds entertaining as it drives past.

Is the VW Polo efficient?

The Polo is relatively miserly when it comes to fuel use. The official claim is 5.0-litres/100km when paired with the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The RACV saw 6.4 litres/100km in predominantly city driving.

It is worth noting that the Polo prefers the more expensive 95RON fuel but the 40-litre tank should be good for more than 600km between refills.

How does the VW Polo drive?

Accomplished sums up the Polo’s road manners.

It steers and corners better than pretty much any other car in the segment.

The suspension is firm enough to resist body roll through turns without being so hard that it bounces over speed humps.

The only criticism comes from the dual-clutch auto, which can hesitate off the line and be a touch jerky when shifting through the lower gears on light throttle application.

More aggressive acceleration results in smoother shifts, so that became the preferred approach.

The seven-speed auto is worth every cent on the freeway, though, where it happily cruises at triple-digit speeds and kicks down quickly and smoothly when you need to overtake or hit a hill.

Anyone shopping for a light car should check out the Polo. The quality of the drive and standard features make it a convincing proposition in this segment.

The VW’s pricing is competitive and the overall presentation is genuinely classy, which isn’t something normally associated with the light-car segment.

The servicing costs are higher than some of its opponents but it certainly isn’t a deal-breaker.

You get what you pay for and in the case of the Polo, you’re paying for a pretty convincing product.

Volkswagen Arteon R-Line

The new Volkswagen Arteon Innovative assistance systems in detail – part 3: "Adaptive cruise control ACC" looks ahead

  • "ACC" in the Arteon is able to integrate speed limits and bends for the first time
  • Predictive assistance system uses camera and navigation system

The Arteon is a gran turismo, ideal for long distances. The new, optionally available "adaptive cruise control ACC" with predictive speed control gives enhanced comfort over long distances. The further developments in "ACC" can integrate speed limits for the first time. So far, the assistance system was known purely as cruise control: adjust the desired speed, that's all. Within system limits, "adaptive cruise control ACC" can take over braking and acceleration. So far, so good. However, anyone who has ever driven a car with "ACC" will have wished that the system could "think" and also take into account bends and speed limits, thus adding even more comfort. The Arteon is the first Volkswagen to do just that: within system limits, it reacts to bends and speed limits and integrates them into the adaptive speed control.

Here's how it works: "ACC" uses a radar sensor (for the cruise control), a camera in the windscreen and the route data of the navigation system. The Arteon can "see" speed limits using the camera and the associated traffic sign recognition. These are adopted by the "ACC". The route data can even be predictively forwarded to the navigation system. This "speed assistant" represents a clear comfort gain especially on long-distance motorways with constantly changing speed information. A "bend assistant" is active at the same time: Using the route data of the navigation system, the car can recognise its position within system limits and adjust the speed on approaching bends, roundabouts and intersections. Local entry and exit signs can also be detected. The "Front Assist" surroundings monitoring system including "City Emergency Braking System" is always integrated in the "ACC". In combination with the automatically shifting DSG, the Arteon can also automatically start up again with "ACC" – for example, in stop & go traffic.

The "adaptive cruise control" is active in a range from 0 to 210 km/h (with DSG); starting at 30 km/h ACC is able to keep the desired speed constantly. Thanks to the predictive speed control system, the system can increase comfort as outlined; at the same time, though, the new "ACC" generation can also contribute to the reduction of fuel consumption thanks to the predictive braking and acceleration functions.

In essence: The "adaptive cruise control ACC with predictive speed control" helps the driver within system limits, but it is the driver who retains overall control at all times for the car and the current situation. The semi-automatic system can be "overridden" at any time by switching it off, braking or accelerating.

The specified fuel consumption and emission data are determined in accordance with the measurement procedures prescribed by law. 1 January 2022, the WLTP test cycle completely replaced the NEDC test cycle and therefore no NEDC values are available for new type approved vehicles after that date.

This information does not refer to a single vehicle and is not part of the offer but is only intended for comparison between different types of vehicles. Additional equipment and accessories (additional components, tyre formats, etc.) can alter relevant vehicle parameters such as weight, rolling resistance and aerodynamics, affecting the vehicle's fuel consumption, power consumption, CO 2 emissions and driving performance values in addition to weather and traffic conditions and individual driving behavior.

Due to more realistic testing conditions, fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions measured according to WLTP will in many cases be higher than the values measured according to NEDC. As a result, the taxation of vehicles may change accordingly as of 1 September 2018. For further information on the differences between WLTP and NEDC, please visit www.volkswagen.de/wltp .

Further information on official fuel consumption data and official specific CO 2 emissions for new passenger cars can be found in the "Guide to fuel economy, CO 2 emissions and power consumption for new passenger car models", which is available free of charge from all sales dealerships and from DAT Deutsche Automobil Treuhand GmbH, Hellmuth-Hirth-Str. 1, D-73760 Ostfildern, Germany and at www.dat.de/co2 .

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

cruise control volkswagen polo 2021

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.
