Uncover Milwaukee’s Secret Speakeasies and Hidden Bars
May 30, 2024
Visiting a Milwaukee speakeasy is an experience shrouded in mystery and intrigue. These covert watering holes pay homage to the city's rich history while offering modern twists on classic cocktails. From secret entrances to password-protected doors, stepping into a speakeasy is like stepping back in time to an era of jazz, flappers, and clandestine rendezvous.
Step through a phone booth and enter a nightclub. Open up a vending machine and discover it’s the entryway into another world. Speakeasies and hidden bars are making a comeback in 2024. Let’s explore Milwaukee’s best secret watering holes.
What Defines a Milwaukee Speakeasy?
During the ban on alcohol in the 1920s, speakeasies emerged as an alternative for those wanting to drink and socialize away from the prying eyes of law enforcement. These secret bars and clubs were hidden away, offering patrons a sense of excitement and rebellion as they enjoyed drinks and entertainment in secret.
Today, the spirit of the speakeasy lives on. Modern speakeasies often feature hidden entrances, password requirements, and vintage decor reminiscent of the Prohibition era. With craft cocktails and an air of exclusivity, these venues aim to recreate the thrill and adventure of the original speakeasies.
Kinn's Top Picks for Authentic Speakeasy Experiences

More Tricks of the Trade:
The Password For Milwaukee’s Spy Bar The SafeHouse
By: Author Adam
Posted on Last updated: May 16, 2020
The SafeHouse is one of Milwaukee’s best-kept secrets, even if it’s really not so secretive. The restaurant and bar were founded in 1966 and has a unique espionage theme, making it a fun and unique destination for families, bar hoppers, and tourists alike.
The SafeHouse is hidden, with a secret entrance in an alley off of Wells Street in downtown Milwaukee. The best way to find it is to head down the alley next to the Newsroom Pub, which is also owned by the SafeHouse and is also worth a stop. Once you locate the entrance, you will be asked for a password to enter.
Don’t worry if you don’t know the password. All prospective customers without the password are asked to perform some sort of test, such as dancing, hula hooping, or making animal noises, at which point you will be granted access. Be aware that whatever the task is, it is broadcasted over TVs for the entertainment of anyone sitting at the bar. (Insider hint: the password may have something to do with needing a safe house).

Inside the Safehouse Restaurant
Once inside, you enter into a restaurant that might as well substitute as a museum of Cold War espionage-related artifacts, with various themed areas, such as one dedicated to East Germany and the Stasi secret police. There are also rotating walls, rotating booths, and a secretive exit for an additional cost.
The restaurant is actually very kid-friendly, with various coloring activities for the young ones and a kid-friendly menu. However, at night, the restaurant transitions more into an adults-only bar, with great music and plenty of dancing. There are also party rooms available for rent for any type of special occasion. The SafeHouse is really an experience worth checking out, in fact, they just opened their second location in Chicago, which speaks to the popularity of the place!

Safehouse Milwaukee Food
The SafeHouse isn’t just a Cold War gimmick! In fact, the food and drinks at SafeHouse are delicious and totally would be worth trying regardless of how fun the restaurant’s atmosphere and the theme is. They serve brunch, lunch, and dinner.
Overall, the menu features an abundance of choices, like hearty salads, an extensive list of entrees, and yummy appetizers. For starters, try the Compromised Chips and Dip, a really great take on the classic spinach and artichoke dip with housemade tortilla chips.
For your main meal, consider choosing from an extensive list of specialty burgers, sandwiches, and homestyle meals like the delicious meatloaf over mashed potatoes or an incredible plate of mac n’ cheese. And if you’re craving a big, refreshing salad, try the Cover Chopped Salad, with chopped romaine lettuce, garbanzo beans, tomatoes, bacon, blue cheese, blackened chicken, and coated in a white balsamic dressing.

There are rotating specialty cocktails at SafeHouse definitely worth trying. Some of our all-time favorites include the Aston Martin, a great mix of cranberry vodka, pomegranate juice, and champagne, or the Spy Jolt, a mixture of iced coffee, Jameson, Baileys, and a small waffle. The Bonita is also quite tasty, with Stoli Vanilla vodka, prosecco, and fresh ginger topped with a lemon wedge. The bar also has an abundance of beer, cider, and liquor options if you aren’t quite feeling a craft cocktail.
Secret Specials
There is a wide variety of secret specials at SafeHouse that you should definitely know about and take advantage of!
The weeknight happy hour, better known as “Undercover Happy Hour” offers discounts on drinks and food, with $3 domestic beers, $4 tall cocktails, $5 house wines, $6 nachos, $6 cheese curds, and $6 chips and dip. Make sure to get there between 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. to snag these deals!
There is also a Sunday brunch with bottomless mimosas from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. To pair with your bottomless mimosas, try the Operation Hangover Recovery, which comes with a beef burger patty topped with honey baked ham, bacon, and a fried egg topped with American cheese, maple syrup, and served with brioche bread for only $14.
And if you’d like to check out the other property, there is Karaoke at the neighboring Newsroom Pub on Wednesdays with drink discounts, trivia on Thursdays, and a twenty-five percent discount for anyone carrying a military identification.
With all these specials you can visit SafeHouse and save a few dollars while enjoying some yummy eats and drinks!

The Elephant Room: Milwaukee's Best Kept Bar Secret
The dim lighting, the plush seating, and the ornately patterned decor are the perfect setting for interesting conversations to unfold. The Elephant Room cocktail lounge is one of the most desirable spots at the MAC, but one you may forget about on the third floor.
The Elephant Room was remodeled, along with the entire third floor, in 1948. “It's a classic lounge bar influenced by the tropical themes in Vogue at the time that also influenced concepts like Trader Vic's and the Tiki movement,” says GM Thomas Hughes. It was designed by Eschweiler and Eschweiler, the premier architecture firm in Milwaukee for many decades.
When the MAC underwent a $62 million renovation in 2020-21 , it was very important that the Elephant Room maintain its mid-century feel, so the original bar, bar top, custom elephant brass bar rail, and signature elephant murals were kept and restored to their original glory.
The flow of the floor was laid out so that you would arrive at the lounge after work, have a cigar, and then enjoy a cocktail before dinner in the Bali dining room ( now 1882 ). After dinner, members went back to the Elephant Room or went to the President's Room to play pool (now the golf suites ).
Traditionally, the drink order at the Elephant Room was a martini in a tall glass. The updated cocktail menu features classic drinks with a bit of a twist. Bartender Ross Martin likes to recommend the Paper Plane, which is a take on a Manhattan. He also pours a lot of Pisco Sours, a drink with Peruvian origins not found on many other menus.
“Back in the day, all the big hitters in Milwaukee met for cocktails in the Elephant Room,” says Brad Schendel, the MAC’s Director of Member Services and longest-standing employee. “Many handshake business deals flowed through that room during the 60s. You had to wear a sportcoat, and we even kept a supply of blue sportcoats with a huge MAC logo on it ready for those not in proper attire.”
Hughes affectionately calls the Elephant Room the “heart of the house” when the winter months arrive. People bring clients, dates, and friends to the bar because of its cozy vibe and convivial atmosphere. The other bartender who’s a fixture there is Andrew Stein, often labeled the “mayor” of the Elephant Room. He is known for his personalized service and for taking the time to get to know the members.
Here is the best-kept secret of all: The Elephant Room is open to both the public and members Wednesday-Thursday, 4-10 PM and Friday-Saturday, 4-11 PM. Just don’t let the secret spread too far, or you might lose your seat at the bar!

About Milwaukee's Safe House spy-themed bar and restaurant
S ometimes, you go out looking to grab a beer. Other times, you want to party like a Cold War-era spy. For the latter, Milwaukeeans and visitors can head to Safe House, an espionage-themed bar and restaurant with a creative spin on the classic speakeasy.
The first nod to the bar’s Hollywood secret agent roots is its entryway tucked into an alley off East Wells Street behind a red door.
The second nod? Agent Moneypenny at the entrance, ensuring each spy knows the secret password to enter (no, we’re not going to reveal it here).
Get daily updates on the Packers during the season.
Those who don’t know the password must pass a test to prove they are no double agent — trial by silly antic, broadcast onto a TV feed at the bar for the entertainment of those inside.
Many Milwaukeeans view the trials of entry without the password as a rite of passage for transplants, visitors and other newcomers.
Once through, you’ll be able to appreciate the other spy-themed aspects of the bar, including spy memorabilia, a maze of interconnected rooms and hallways, and a booth that spins around to serve as a secret entrance. Visitors can also try the bar’s creative cocktail concoctions with names like the “Spy’s Demise.”
