Air's Moon Safari is an era-defining French album worth celebrating, 25 years on
There's no telling how many special moments have been soundtracked by Moon Safari, the acclaimed 1998 debut album from French duo Air.
An era-defining record of pristine, space-age lounge music delivered with cinematic atmosphere and a distinctively French je ne se quios , Moon Safari was a universal critical and commercial success upon release.
The lush easy-listening music was perfectly suited to post-club comedowns, hip cafes, and make-out sessions: smooth and dreamy enough to be played in the background, but singular and masterfully crafted enough to reward close listening.
It proved highly influential, too. But the wave of mellow, down tempo imitators and 'chill out' CD compilations it spawned struggled to surpass Air's chic, exquisitely woozy beauty.
'It was not meant to be played live'
Jean-BenoĂźt Dunckel, one half of Air alongside Nicolas Godin, never expected Moon Safari's enduring success.
"We never imagined this album could work that way worldwide," he tells Karen Leng on Double J Lunch.Â
"It took time, it took decades, [but] the success is not by us, the audience made [it]."
This year, the duo has been playing Moon Safari in full around the world on their first tour in seven years, including Australia.
"It was not made to be played live," says Dunckel.Â
"We had to adapt it for the live [setting]. That is what the people want to get â this special feeling they heard the first time⊠to live again these feelings."
Having played two nights at the Sydney Opera House as part of Vivid Live , Air will live-stream their show at London's Royal Albert Hall this weekend.
"It's a beautiful venue," says Dunckel, who is keen to preserve a pristine performance of the album online for future access.
"It's really important to do that because⊠people can also discover the band live. Some people appreciate the live versions more than the recorded versions."
Performing as a trio, alongside drummer Louis Delorme, Air play inside an oblong box adorned with dazzling lights and visuals, which morph from swathes of minimalist colour to the perspective of a spaceship enjoying interstellar travel.
"We play in a box of light. It looks a bit like the studio on the cover of 10 000 Hz Legend," says Dunckel, referencing the band's second studio album â a weirder, wilder reaction to Moon Safari.
"It could be a home, it could be our world, our head, our architectural concept. It helps for people to enter into a world⊠people like [that] intimacy."
Dunckel says people often ask: "Are you not bored to play these songs you play for 20 years now?"
"Sometimes I struggle â because you have to concentrate, and you have to play. But I'm never bored. It's always a pleasure."
Moon Safari is a product of its era, but it's also aged beautifully.
It's an evocative listening experience, from the moment lengthy opener 'La femme d'argent' ushers you in with the sounds of water and slinky bassline, through to the weightless pop and robot-voiced melodies of 'Kelly Watch The Stars' and 'New Star in the Sky'.
In 1998, its retro-futuristic arrangements already sounded timeless. 25 years later, its ability to transport your mind and imagination elsewhere hasn't dated one iota.
"It could be a journey, a love story," remarks Dunckel. "That's why we're really attached to it. I think the audience is searching for that, too.
"It helps human relationships in every way," adds Dunckel. Over the years, Air fans have shared "so many stories" of what the album means to them.
"Most of the time it's for love. It's always, 'I met my girlfriend or wife this time'."
Back in 1998, Dunckel told triple j that while hiking in Iceland, his guide revealed Moon Safari was his love-making soundtrack.
There's "probably" plenty of babies in the world with some of the album's DNA in them since, Dunckel estimates of a new generation discovering Air for the first time.
"As we are getting old now, it's becoming that people say, 'oh yeah, my parents were listening to Moon Safari when we were travelling in a car; this family time'."
Sexy Boy, the surprising queer anthem
For many, debut single 'Sexy Boy' was their first introduction to Air. A seductive slice of synth-pop that brought vocoder back to the pop charts and sung in both French and English.
It's a seemingly simple song but Dunckel notes there's "a lot of tolerance and freedom" embedded in it.
"Sexy Boy, first of all, is a strange title because it breaks a certain taboo. The taboo is that heterosexual boys can check out other boys," he explains.
"Also, it became a gay slogan in a way. A gay anthem."
The song took on a new meaning in late 90s Paris when the electronic music scene's wider acceptance of the LGTBQI+ community led to more club and techno nights dedicated to queer punters and DJs emerging.
"There was a lot of gay parties," says Dunckel. "Homosexuality is everywhere in the world, and it's always existed, always there. So, it was important to liberate this movement."
Originally, the song's titular phrase was inspired by Parisian fashion culture.
"People are checking each other out all the time⊠In Paris, when a couple is meeting another couple, the girl is not going to check out the boy. She's going to check out the other girl: analyse what she wears, how she behaves, what is the fashion or type of the boyfriend.
"Sexy Boy is speaking about that. The fact a man wants to be a pretty man and he is checking [out] other boys."
A popular soundtrack choice, featured in teen rom-com 10 Things I Hate About You and noughties TV drama Queer As Folk, 'Sexy Boy' is also a testament to youth.
The French verses are "celebrating that golden age of being young," Dunckel explains.
"When you're young you don't realise you're at the top of your life. You have a lot of power, actually⊠because you're beautiful. Your skin, hair, you feel great, you have a lot of energy."
The makings of a classic
Despite its iconic status, Moon Safari was actually the last roll of the dice for Dunckel and Godin.
Raised in the conservative suburb of Versailles, the pair began making music together after meeting at school. But after having their demo tapes rejected by every record label they approached, they quit music and instead focused on their studies.
Each had established careers â Godin in architecture, Dunckel in mathematics â when an opportunity presented itself in a close friend landing a role with Virgin Records imprint Source.
They landed a deal with the label but ditching their jobs for a full-time career in music to support their burgeoning families was a gamble.
"We were 26 years old. We were not sure we come be musicians for the rest of our life," remembers Dunckel. "I was already working [as] a physics teacher⊠I had a baby."
Thankfully, their risk was rewarded when their debut album became a breakout international hit. Air was swiftly lumped alongside a fresh wave of Parisian artists reinventing the electronic music scene in the late 90s.
Dubbed French touch, the movement included Cassius, St. Germain, Ătienne de CrĂ©cy, and Daft Punk, who recorded their breakout 1997 album Homework down the street from where Air made Moon Safari.
"There was a kind of energy circulating all over Paris," recalls Dunckel. "Paris is kind of small; all the media, artists and business part of it [were] working all together."
The worlds of music, fashion, contemporary art, cinema â "everything was mixed," Dunckel says.
"At this time, new generations of young people coming from the suburbs are even inside Paris and mixing all these rich, futuristic concepts together with new machines, samplers, computer programs to make music."
A fond farewell to youth
Despite being poster boys for the future of French music, Moon Safari was an evocative, nostalgia-drenched ode to Dunckel and Godin's past.
"In a way it was the end of my youth⊠That's why the songs [on Moon Safari], there are a lot of regrets and it's a goodbye to our youth and the innocence of it.
"It's full of vibrations from teenage times."
Although labelled an electronic act, Air's music wasn't rooted in beats and house music. Instead, they armed themselves with analogue Moog and Korg synthesizers, vintage drum machines, vocoders and the trusty Rhodes piano.
The resulting compositions bore the esprit of Serge Gainsbourg, electronic pioneers like Jean-Michel Jarre, and the 1970s film and TV soundtracks of Dunckel's childhood.
There's a fondness for the psychedelic grandeur of Pink Floyd and ELO. But also, Burt Bacharach arrangements, particularly in the wistful French horn topline of ''Ce matin lĂ ' (This morning) and the easy-going 'You Make It Easy' and 'All I Need', both featuring the lyrics and vocals of Godin's then-neighbour, Beth Hirsch.
From its lush, otherworldly sounds right down to its title, Moon Safari gives rise to cosmic ideas and conducive to escapism. That spirit is central to Air's entire ethos.
"I think music exists in paradise and you can feel this [album] is in a strange interface between our world and something else."
Such ephemeral expressions might be surprising coming from a former physics teacher, but Dunckel says "both sides of your brain help" when it comes to making emotive art.
"There is a mathematic aspect of music, that analyses and helps you perform and conceive music. But there is something else happening, your heart is talking.
"As a musician you're organising the vibrations of your heart and the feelings into music⊠vibrations travelling into space and air."
"When I do a song, it's all about 'what do I feel?'" Dunckel concludes.
"For me, good means it affects me. No good means I don't feel anything⊠if it affects me, it's going to affect others, too. They're going to feel the feelings I do, too."

Lionel Richie on the continuing power of "We Are the World"
By Tracy Smith
Updated on: June 9, 2024 / 10:05 AM EDT / CBS News
In the universe of pop music from the 1980s, there's one song that's especially hard to shake. In 1985, "We Are the World" was made to raise money for food aid to Africa. The song, and the saga of recording it, are now the subject of a Netflix documentary, "The Greatest Night in Pop."
Lionel Richie co-wrote the song, and he's the man who helped 46 of the biggest music stars on Earth record it in one crazy, all-night session in January 1985.
How did he do it? " Naiveté, number one," he replied. "And number two, we didn't have any distractions. There was no internet. There was no cell phone. There was nothing but purity of a thought, an idea, and how to get it done."
It all started with "Do They Know It's Christmas," the British charity single meant to raise awareness (and open wallets) for food aid to famine-ravaged Africa. Singer and philanthropist Harry Belafonte thought American artists could do the same, so he called super-agent Ken Kragen to help round up talent, and Kragen got Richie and Michael Jackson to write a song. "At the beginning, there was no terror at all, because we had no deadline – Whenever you could write it, we can write it. There's no problem ," said Richie.
They wrote at Jackson's house, with all of his pets, including a large snake, which rattled Richie: "I'm trying to write the lyrics to this song, and I'm screaming, and he's going, ''He wants to play with you, Lionel.'"
But Kragen kept calling more big names to join in, and the project started to snowball. "And next thing I know, Kragen calls on the phone and says, 'Ah, Bruce is in. Dylan's in.' 'Dylan, you mean, Bob Dylan? What are you talkin' about?' 'Well, Ray's coming.' 'Ray?' 'Charles. Ray is coming.' So, all of a sudden we went from just la-la-la to panic!"
Finally, with the song written, they made a plan to record it the night of the American Music Awards in January 1985, when all the big names in music were in Los Angeles. Richie hosted the three-hour show that night, but his main event started afterward, when the mega-stars started arriving for a recording session for the ages: Diana Ross, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, and so many more.
Richie described it as "a room full of five-year-olds, and we're all amazed that we're there with each other, and getting used to each other. I call it the first day of first grade. So, you're all in the room without your parents, and we don't know exactly what we're doing. And Quincy's the parent. And he pulled it off."
So how did Quincy Jones keep the big talent, and all of those big egos, in line? Peer pressure. "I kept saying to Quincy, 'Is everyone going to go in a booth and sing their part?'" Richie recalled. "He said, 'No, we're gonna put them in a circle, and they'll be perfect every time we sing.' Why? 'Cause you're standing and looking into the rest of the class. You're gonna be perfect every time. And it was true. A little intimidating. In fact, did I say a little intimidating? I mean, now that I talk about now, it was terrifying! "
But the best moments of the night were when the immortals in the room let their guard down a bit, like when Diana Ross asked Daryl Hall for an autograph. "You just couldn't get enough of that," said Richie. "And then just to sit around and, 'Hey, man, I just want to tell you I'm a big fan,' and then we just melted into this family."
The session lasted well into the next morning, and for those in the room it was trying, and triumphant.
Asked if there was a moment he thought they wouldn't pull it off, Richie replied, "Several times. It was just fatigue at one point, once you get to four o'clock in the morning, and we're now putting on individual parts. Springsteen left the building on the last thing we put on this record at eight o'clock. So, around 7:30, 8:00 was his last la-la."
The single was released in March 1985. It went straight to #1, and raised tens of millions of dollars.
For one brief moment in time the world seemed to unite, just a little. "We actually thought we were going to wipe out hunger around the world," Richie said. "All we needed to do was just tell a few people, and the rest of the world would take over, and the whole world will run next door and save their next-door neighbors in their cities and their communities. And then, about three years later, the world went back to sleep."
But since the documentary premiered in January, there's been a renewed interest. The song "We Are the World" was back on the Billboard charts, and donations started flowing again – in the past six months, more than $600,000 and counting.
To Lionel Richie, it's not so much a song but a gift, and one that keeps on giving. "We raised a lotta money, yes," Richie said. "We kept thinking, Okay, we're gonna give away $5 million. Okay, hopefully we'll raise ten. Once you get to be 40 and 50? Whoa. What the heck just happened?
"But I remember calling Quincy on the phone. I said, 'Did we say we were giving away half the money or all the money?' He said, 'Don't try it. Lionel, don't try it. Don't try it. We're committing all the money.' I said, 'Oh, oh, yeah, I just wanted to make sure!' But then you realize we kept trying to stop 'We Are the World.' Okay, we're winding it down now. And the next thing we know, $2 million comes in. It's still breathing."

What Does “Auld Lang Syne” Actually Mean?
- How Old Is The Song?
- Why A New Year's Eve Song?
New Yearâs Eve is full of traditions that are easy to understand. Counting down the seconds until the day the calendar changes, for example. Others are a little less straightforward. Case in point: singing “Auld Lang Syne”âor at least humming along while it plays on TV in the background.
Donât blame yourself if you donât know the lyrics despite the song making the rounds every year. The words auld lang syne literally mean âold long since,â though in practice it means âold times, especially times fondly remembered,â as well as an âold or long friendship .â Itâs from the Scots language , and the expression was first recorded in 1660â1680.
But why do millions of people sing it on New Yearâs Eve every year? It all started with Robert Burns, the national poet of Scotland.
When was âAuld Lang Syneâ written?
Burns wrote his âAuld Lang Syneâ versionâthe one that weâve all come to know (or at least kind of know)âin 1788 and published it in 1796. Since the first known recording of the expression came about more than a century earlier, itâs clear it wasnât an entirely new concept.
Gather the wee bairns and take a peek at our list of 15 Scottish words perfect for celebrating old times (and new!)
Burns may get the credit for âAuld Lang Syne,â but no one knows who actually first wrote the poem. Burns himself didnât claim the ditty. Instead, he said he took a fragment of a folk song that heâd heard and built more lyrics around it. Itâs believed that the chorus and first stanza came from elsewhere, while the rest is a Burns original.
The chorus and first stanza, of course, are the bits that people typically know if they know any lyrics at all. Sorry, Rob.
Why is âAuld Lang Syneâ a New Yearâs Eve song?
The final day of the year is an apt time for looking back at the days past. That makes the theme and gist of âAuld Lang Syneâ ripe for seasonal use. Still, that doesnât fully explain why a centuries-old Scottish folk song became such a New Yearâs Eve hit in America.
One of the reasons that âAuld Lang Syneâ made it into New Yearâs Eve lore is because of mass media. A popular New Yearâs Eve broadcast on radio and then television hosted by Guy Lombardo and his band, the Royal Canadians, ran from 1929 to 1976. Lombardo came to be known as âMr. New Yearâs Eveâ because of the broadcast.
Mr. New Yearâs Eve himself is responsible for pushing âAuld Lang Syneâ to the masses year after year on his annual show. If anything can make an 18th-century Scottish song popular in the modern era, itâs the power of television.

What do the lyrics mean.
Now that you know what the titular words mean and how it came about, what about the rest of the lyrics? You might as well know what the most popular lyrics mean if youâre going to sing the song before starting the new year. âAuld Lang Syneâ is a relatively lengthy song in its entirety, but typically only the first verse and the chorus make the cut for New Yearâs Eve celebrations.
The first lyrics, âShould auld acquaintance be forgot / And never brought to mind?â is a rhetorical question of whether you should forget about your old friends (which is not recommended). It goes on to talk about reminiscing âfor auld lang syne,â or for fond memories of old times. The lyric âWeâll tak a cup oâ kindness yetâ refers to raising a glass, while âand surely yeâll be your pint-stowp / and surely Iâll be mineâ is another drinking line that means, âAnd surely youâll have your pint tankard / And surely Iâll have mine.â Because these lyrics do resemble English words, it can come as a shock to many casual singers that the rest of the song does not seem equally familiar.
Burns writes about running âabout the braes,â which are hills, and âpuâd the gowans fine,â which means “pulled the daisies fine.” The lyrics âpaidlâd iâ the burn / Frae morninâ sun till dine / But seas between us braid hae roarâd,â mean that the singer has paddled in the stream from the morning until dinner, but the broad seas have roared between us. This is a reference to friends that were once close but now are far.
Finally, Burns writes âthereâs a hand, my trusty fiere / And gieâs a hand oâ thine / And weâll tak a right guid willy waught.â This means the singer is giving his hand to his trusty friend and the friend does the same. Then the references to alcohol come back as they drink a good-will drink to the days past.
Careful with those tankards, now. This list of synonyms for drunkard might come in handy on New Year’s Eve.
If you understand it that far through, youâll likely be in better shape than your companions come New Yearâs Eve. For the ambitious, however …
Here are the full lyrics to “Auld Lang Syne” :
Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And auld lang syne.
CHORUS: For auld lang syne, my jo, For auld lang syne. We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet, For auld lang syne.
And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp! And surely I’ll be mine! And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet, For auld lang syne.
REPEAT CHORUS
We twa hae run about the braes And pu’d the gowans fine But we’ve wander’d mony a weary foot Sin auld lang syne.
We twa hae paidl’d i’ the burn Frae mornin’ sun till dine. But seas between us braid hae roar’d Sin auld lang syne.
And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere! And gie’s a hand o’ thine! And we’ll tak a right guid willy waught, For auld lang syne.
Should old acquaintance be forgot And never brought to mind? Should old acquaintance be forgot, And long, long ago.
And for long, long ago, my dear For long, long ago. We’ll take a cup of kindness yet For long, long ago. And surely youll buy your pint-jug! And surely I’ll buy mine! And we’ll take a cup of kindness yet For long, long ago.
We two have run about the hills And pulled the daisies fine; But we’ve wandered manys the weary foot Since long, long ago.
We two have paddled in the stream, From morning sun till dine; But seas between us broad have roared Since long, long ago.
And there’s a hand, my trusty friend! And give us a hand of yours! And we’ll take a deep draught of good-will For long, long ago.
When it's time to raise a glass to the new year, make sure you have your grammar correct. Is it "New Year" or "New Year's"?

Eminem faces backlash after referring to Megan Thee Stallion shooting in new song
Eminem drew the ire of the internet over the weekend after releasing a new single that refers to rapper Tory Lanezâ shooting of Megan Thee Stallion in the foot in 2020.
âIf I was to ask for Megan Thee Stallion if she would collab with me/Would I really have a shot at a feat?â Eminem raps in the first minute of âHoudini.â (âFeatâ is short for âfeature.â)
Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, seems to be poking fun at the July 2020 shooting that left Megan Thee Stallion (Megan Pete) with a foot injury and Tory Lanez with a 10-year prison sentence . The line didnât go over well with social media users, who criticized him for making light of gender violence and targeting a Black woman in his lyrics.Â
âBeing 51 years old and taking shots at Megan Thee Stallion? Out of touch,â one user posted on X .Â
Another user condemned the line, noting that June is Black Music Month: âIs it too much to ask that as we enter Black music month in a few days that folks not allow Eminem to make light of Megan, a BW who was a victim of gun violence, to be targeted in a song by a white rapper? Folks are too comfortable disrespecting Black women.â
âHoudiniâ is the first single off of Eminemâs upcoming album, âThe Death of Slim Shady (Coup de GrĂące).â The star-studded superhero-themed video for the song appears to be an homage to his 2002 video for âWithout Me,â and includes celebrity cameos from Snoop Dogg, Pete Davidson, Dr. Dre, 50 Cent and Shane Gillis. Along with mentioning Megan Thee Stallion, Eminem name-drops R. Kelly, Ru Paul and Sherri Papini , a California woman who faked her own kidnapping in 2016.Â
Some social media users came to Eminemâs defense, noting that the Detroit rapper has long been known for provocative lyrics.Â
âIf youâre offended by the Megan thee Stallion line in Eminemâs #Houdini , you clearly donât understand/know who Slim Shady is â the whole purpose is that he makes fun of everybody. It ainât that deep and itâs a good line. This isnât a diss,â one person wrote in a post on X.Â
Another X user chalked the shooting reference up to Enimenâs playful use of words , writing, âwhy do people think Eminem was trying to start beef with Megan Thee Stallion ⊠it was just some sâ-- wordplay lmao.â
Megan Thee Stallion and Eminem did not respond to a request for comment from NBC News. Neither have publicly addressed the online chatter.Â
The Megan Thee Stallion shooting has also been the subject of rap lyrics from musicians like Drake and Nicki Minaj over the years. It also spurred nationwide conversations about gender violence against Black women. Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, was convicted of three felony charges and sentenced to 10 years in prison in December 2022.
Megan Thee Stallion recently announced that her third album, â MEGAN ,â is set for release on June 28.
