Has anyone done this tour with Riviera? If so do you have any helpful tips in any areas that we might not be aware of. A couple of things I would like to know:- what type of plugs do they use? What is the average price of a meal out ? What is the price of a pint of beer? are there any customs that are really taboo for visitors etc. Many thanks in advance

We are on the verge of booking with Riviera for a tour next April. How did you rate them as a company? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Not what you're looking for?

People that have booked this tour have also searched for the following:

Location: Tokyo

Meals included: no meals.

You arrive at the airport for your overnight direct flight to Tokyo.

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals included: breakfast.

On our arrival you will be met at the airport for a transfer to our hotel, the excellent four-star superior New Otani, for three nights with breakfast. Perfectly located in the heart of Tokyo, close to the Japanese parliament, the nearest metro stop is just a couple of minutes’ walk allowing you explore at ease (all station names are given in English). This afternoon we have our first taste of Tokyo with a short orientation walk in the surrounding area, with rest of your first day to relax after the flight. This evening we will have a welcome drinks reception and evening meal to get to know each other better.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

This morning we commence the exploration of Japan’s capital and largest city. At first glance, Tokyo might seem similar to other great Asian cities like Singapore or Shanghai, with its gleaming glass skyscrapers and busy, fashionable shops. But you’ll soon begin to notice some of the many fascinating differences – like the spotlessly clean and surprisingly quiet streets. There’s no beeping of horns here, that would be far too impolite! Our first stop is the famous Shinto Meiji shrine, dedicated to one of its past emperors. Set in outstandingly lush parkland, this is a working religious site where you may be lucky enough to see a typical Japanese marriage underway. Then we move on to some of Tokyo’s most renowned quarters, including Omotesando Street, Tokyo’s ‘Rodeo Drive’, full of luxury brand shops. Then there’s the Harajuku area where teenagers sport the latest outrageous fashions and the Akihabara electronic town, home to one of the first stores devoted to personal robots. We savour some Japanese cuisine at our included lunch.

This morning we visit Tokyo’s Asakusa district. Full of traditional small houses and shops, it’s a unique insight into the Tokyo of a hundred years ago. We will then transfer by boat down the Sumida River to Ginza, widely recognised as one of the world’s most luxurious shopping destinations. It’s brimming with ultra-modern department stores, boutiques, restaurants and coffee houses. Your afternoon is free to shop, explore, or perhaps indulge in some fascinating people-watching. Another option is to head to the Tokyo National Museum, just a few stops on the metro. Here you’ll find the world’s largest collection of Japanese art, with pottery, painting and prints, textiles, fashion and oriental antiquities.

Location: Mount Fuji, Hakone

Meals included: breakfast, dinner.

Saying goodbye to Tokyo we drive towards Mount Fuji, probably Japan’s most instantly recognisable sight. Fringed by thick forests and a crescent-shaped ring of shimmering lakes, we are presented with one of the world’s greatest and most spectacular views. We visit two of these beautiful lakes to give you the best chance of appreciating and enjoying the stunning panorama from two different angles – and some of life’s most amazing photo opportunities. Our first stop is at Lake Kawaguchi, well known to the Japanese but as yet undiscovered by most foreign visitors. Next we head south to explore the fascinating mountain resort of Hakone. Descending to the smooth dark blue waters of Lake Ashi, we take a cruise on a rather unusual Japanese version of an early 19th-century pirate ship. From here, especially on a clear day, the views of Mt Fuji are one of the world’s greatest panoramas. Arriving at the four-star Hakone Hotel, we stay for one night with breakfast and dinner. The entire area here is geo-thermally active, and provides the perfect opportunity to try one of Japan’s unmissable experiences – bathing in an ‘onsen’, a hot spring at our very own hotel.

Location: Hiroshima

This morning we travel to Hiroshima on Japan’s iconic gleaming white bullet train. With reclining seats, plenty of legroom, air conditioned comfort and speeds up to 189 mph, this is an incomparable way to travel. Arriving at lunchtime, we’re on our way to one of the country’s most distinctive views on the nearby small island of Miyajima. A huge red ‘Torii’ gate sits just offshore; widely celebrated, at high tide it appears to float between the sea and sky. This popular little island is easy to explore on foot. It has a relaxed holiday atmosphere, lots of interesting shops and a covered market. Returning to Hiroshima, we stay for two nights at the four-star RIHGA Royal Hotel, with breakfast.

There’s a sobering reminder of the horrors of war this morning as we visit Hiroshima’s Peace Park and museum, displaying the remains of the only building to survive the atomic bomb blast of August 1945. The city has been completely rebuilt and there are no signs left of the devastation of that fateful day. Yet you may notice a small digital counter indicating the number of days since the last atomic test – it’s surprisingly recent. Your afternoon is at leisure to experience this charming city.

Location: Okayama

Leaving Hiroshima by coach, we head towards the old imperial capital of Kyoto. En route we’ll visit the superb Korakuen garden at Okayama – built in 1700 and renowned as one of Japan’s most exquisite gardens, with lawns, lakes, wooden bridges and shrines and teahouses! We use good, centrally located four-star hotels for your four-night stay with breakfast in Kyoto.

Location: Kyoto

This morning is one of the real highlights of the tour as we explore some of the overwhelming treasures of Japan’s most revered city. First is the spectacular and beautiful Golden Pavilion, dating from the classical Muromachi age of Japanese temple design, perfectly overlooking its lake and garden. The whole of the upper floors, covered in gold leaf, glow in the morning light with an almost blinding intensity. Nearby is the Ryoan-ji temple, or the Temple of the Dragon at Peace, home to Japan’s most famous Zen garden, consisting of fifteen rocks surrounded by white gravel carefully raked by monks daily. As a complete change, we then move on to the amazing Arashiyama bamboo forest – experiencing an almost other-worldly feel as the light streams through the tall green columns of bamboo, up to 30 feet high! Yet another iconic Kyoto monument is next – Nijo Castle. Set at the heart of the city and built in the 17th century, it’s famous for its wooden floors remarkably designed to creak like a nightingale’s song, thus warning its occupants of any impending stealthy attack! Finally we take a walking tour through Kyoto’s Gion district. Here is the classic image of Japan; streets of wooden houses, the unmistakable sound of wooden sandals reverberating on the  avements, bright, silk-clad geishas, cherry trees and a host of traditional restaurants. We also experience a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony’

Location: Nara, Kyoto

Capital city before Kyoto, Nara is just a few miles south. Firstly we see one of the country’s most iconic shrines, made from thousands of red Torii gates forming two extraordinary vermilion-coloured wooden tunnels up a hillside. Arriving at Nara you’ll be greeted by the dozens of tame deer considered for centuries to be messengers of the gods. The main sight though is the amazing Todai-ji temple, astonishingly the world’s largest wooden structure. Housing a huge bronze Buddha, this is a truly inspiring sight and just one of Nara’s several UNESCO World Heritage sites.

You’re free today to explore and discover the many delights and attractions of Kyoto. There are still more enchanting temples to see - like the 15th century Silver Pavilion and the even older Eikando temple, marvels of architectural and garden design within an easy walk of each other along the charming Philosopher’s Path.

After a last free morning at leisure, we take our bullet train to Tokyo staying overnight at the four-star Excel Tokyu near the airport.

We fly directly back to the UK, arriving later the same day, with memories of an incomparable tour full of the most extraordinary insights and experiences that Japan has to offer.

Reviews of this operator

This review is for the....

This review is for the italian Lake Como trip Aug 1-8 Wow what a trip. Riviera from start to finish were excellent the booking and help line answering questions were very good and clear. The travel booklet you get is laid out that it is simple to read and follow with step by step info from booking in to flights to meeting the guides. Our guide Matt Purse was just the best guide and real credit to Riviera with his knowledge and straight forward approach to running the trips. Matt kept us informed and told us all the sort of info you want to know without going over the top....This chap should teach other reps ..thank you so much. The coaches they use are all clean and well equipped with usb chargers and have aircon. The places chosen to visit were well researched even down to where coaches park or drop you off. The Bernina Express was the highlight for our family and matts photo tip was welcomed. The only down point was the hotel,a little dated and evening meal in main restuarant was a bit of a let down. I think we were lucky with our room on level 7 and with balcony as the walls are very thin and noise travels. We would book again with riviera

I have been on three...

I have been on three trips with Riviera Travel so far, with two more booked during 2024. Highly recommended. Excellent tour guides. Great program of visits. Great hotels used.

What a fantastic holiday to...

What a fantastic holiday to Canada on the Rocky Mountaineer & Alaska Cruise. If you are thinking of booking this do it right now. From start to finish everything was great. The hotels, the transport and the cruise. The rep was absolutely fabulous. If you have ‘B’ as your rep you will make a friend. She is so full of knowledge. We went on this trip with strangers and left it as friends.

Thankyou Riviera and all the...

Thankyou Riviera and all the staff on the William Wordsworth Danube River cruise. My husband and i have just travelled on the Danube to celebrate my husbands 60th and we had such a lovely experience. We were younger than most of the travellers but we met so many lovely people so this wasnt a problem. The staff were so lovely and professional. The service we experienced was so high. The boat was beautiful, the food amazing and the excursions were informative and well managed. I would definately recommend riviera as a company. In fact we are now considering their Japan holiday.

We would go again in a heartbeat

Oh my goodness, what a relief it was to actually get away! Full marks to all at Riviera for keeping us up to date before our trip and for the help so cheerfully and patiently given with the extra admin that Covid brought our way. We felt totally safe with the measures taken on board, thank you very much for this. Without exception, Staff were fantastic and our every need was attended to. The additional Covid testing ran smoothly, organised by our Riviera Reps. The guided tours were most interesting: the guides very knowledgeable and more importantly, interesting to listen to. We loved this trip and would do it again in a heartbeat. Thank you again Riviera, you were FAB!

Second escorted tour with this...

Second escorted tour with this company. Did 5 days in Iceland tour. Everything went smoothly, excellent tour guide, Per. Extremely knowledgeable and interesting guy. Very friendly too. Highly recommend. Just let down by the room given at the hotel, but I guess the travel company doesn't have control over this.

Riviera South Africa tour - awesome

Riviera have amazing holidays and tours to choose from. The one we chose was South Africa and wow! It turned out to be our best trip ever - incredible memories we will never forget. We’ve been all over the world which was because of all our experiences, this one was awesome. The organisation of the holiday, the guide and the travel was e cells that. The choice of hotels, meals, restaurants, trips was absolutely fantastic - very good quality and character - nothing bland or boring! The Riviera guide was permanently with us along with a South Africa guide and they were both extremely friendly, professional, informative and you could ask any questions you want! I would massively recommend this holiday/trip and when you’ve experienced it, you realise how reasonable the price is. We reflect on this trip a lot and thank you Riviera for giving us such a wonderful experience.

Although most people seem to...

Although most people seem to book and pay for their holidays online, because we live close by we prefer to make a personal visit. In my opinion if they are offering this as an option they should be better equipped to accommodate visits in person. We have not been on our river cruise yet, so can't comment on that yet.

Recently went on a tour...

Recently went on a tour of the Deep South USA plus Texas. Before we set off on the trip we were informed that our trip On the Amtrak train would not be going ahead and we were given a £50 refund each. We were disappointed especially as there was no consultation beforehand and to only receive £50 each in compensation was poor. This was one of the reasons we had chosen Riviera Travel and may have considered another company had we been given the choice. Despite this we had a fabulous holiday, although we thought the tour guide was poor. There was no music played whilst we were traveling on the coach and when asked if more could be played we received a flat ‘no’. If we had relied on the tour guide all the time we wouldn’t have gone anywhere. However we ignored his comments that Nashville was ‘mad’ and went downtown and had the best night. All in all we had a wonderful holiday but it could have been better from Riviera Travel point of view. This is a very expensive tour and we thought the standard of hotels were very poor in some places. Probably would try a different tour company next time.

Presently in Croatia staying at...

Presently in Croatia staying at Arauana Hotel, supposedly a 4 star property, but wouldn't give it any star rating. Rooms are small and dirty. Wallpaper blistering. Meals served in a shed like lean-to. Food like warm, greasy and always self service. Second holiday with Riviera this year and neither at standard advertised. Have travelled with them previously and everything was fine, but standards have really dropped. Have booked a holiday with them next year and now dreading it. Certainly don't provide the standard advertised. We have never stayed in such a hovel and have visited youngsters in back packers accommodation which was far better than this supposedly 4 star accommodation. There are no indoor bars or lounges only a shed as a so called restaurant. Absolutely disgusting. Won't be boking with them again

Day 1 UK - Tokyo

Today, let the excitement start to build as you board your flight to Tokyo.

Day 2 Tokyo

You’ll arrive in Tokyo this evening where we’ll transfer you to your hotel, as you drive towards the city, the iconic Tokyo Tower can be seen lit up on the skyline. After time to settle in, why not head out for stroll to get your bearings. You could visit the bright lights of Tokyo in the Shinjuku district where there are a range of restaurants offering traditional Japanese cuisine.

Day 3 Tokyo

Today a guided tour will take you to explore some of Tokyo’s incredible sights. The first stop of the day is in the tranquil setting of a 170 acre, man-made forest. The Meiji Jengu Shrine and great torii gate is dedicated to the first emperor of modern Japan. Walk along the peaceful, shaded paths and take time to watch people as they say their own private prayers.

Our next spot is the district of Asakusa, where you'll walk down the vibrant Nakamise shopping street bustling with stalls selling an array of clothing, souvenirs and delicious local food. The walkway leads us to the Sensoji Buddhist temple – your senses are filled with the aroma of incense, and the sounds of money being tossed into the temples saisen-bako. You’ll have some time here to explore at your own pace and enjoy a bite to eat. Perhaps you’ll revisit one or two of the stalls selling dango or karaage or venture to one of the small restaurants hidden in one of the side-streets.

In the afternoon we make a stop close to the Imperial Palace, the main residence of the Emperor of Japan, as well as a visit the Tokyo Tower to enjoy views across the city. After time back at the hotel to freshen up, we'll take a short walk to a local restaurant and enjoy a welcome dinner.

Day 4 Hakone & Mount Fuji

Today we journey outside of the city limits as we venture to Hakone, the gateway to Mount Fuji, Japan’s highest mountain. And, it isn’t long after leaving Tokyo before you cast your first glimpse of her snow-capped peak. We’ll drive up to the Fujinomiya 5th Station, located at 2400m above sea level for not only a closer look at Mount Fuji from her southern slope but spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

We’ll then take a short drive to Lake Ashi. The lake formed thousands of years ago in the crater of a dormant volcano, here we'll take a tranquil and scenic cruise across its waters. If the weather is clear, you’ll enjoy further views of Mount Fuji. The views here are breathtakingly beautiful and we'll take a cable-car ride over the Owakudani Valley to admire views of mountains, sulphur hot springs and crystal-clear Lake. At the hot springs, you'll have a chance to try the local delicacy of 'black eggs'. Cooked in the sulphur, eating just one egg is believed to add seven years to your life!

Day 5 Tokyo - Takayama

Today we leave Tokyo behind and head to Takayama in the Japanese Alps. We’ll first drive to Matsumoto Castle, it's the country's oldest five-tiered wooden castle and has been designated a National Treasure of Japan. Step inside to explore the each of the floors taking the steep wooden stairs to the observation deck on the top floor. You’ll have time in Matsumoto to explore at leisure. Walk towards the river and watch koi swimming in the clear waters, or walk along Nawate shopping street where small shops sell local wares.

In the afternoon, we stop at Daio Wasabi Farm to see how Japanese horseradish is grown. The farm has a number of large fields where the wasabi plants grow and we will admire them from specially designed walking trails. To round off your visit, why not treat yourself to a wasabi-flavoured ice cream!

The drive from Matsumoto to Takayama is a long one, but this road takes you into the heart of the Hida Mountains along winding roads that pass through mountain tunnels and alongside rivers so clear you can see the rocky bed below – the panoramic views are breath-taking.

After arriving at our hotel in Takayama, we’ll meet for a dinner of local cuisine.

Day 6 Takayama

This morning, we start with a visit to the Miyagawa morning market, where you can see and perhaps even sample the region's exotic fruit and vegetables. There is free time to explore this town and it is full of surprises. Affectionally called “little Kyoto” the old town has been beautifully preserved – the distinctive black facades of buildings lining narrow streets are full of museums, galleries, restaurants and craft shops. You could even visit the Matsuri no Mori festival museum or Historical Government House.

This afternoon we’ll visit one of Japan's most scenic areas Shirakawago, located along the Shokawa River. This UNESCO listed site showcases a rare type of architecture called Gassho-zukuri. Walk along the suspension bridge that crosses Sho River and wander through the small village. You’ll have time to wander through the site at your own pace. Perhaps you’ll step inside the Wada House, the largest traditional gassho-style farmhouse in the village. Just behind this house is a path that takes you up to an observation deck – here you’ll enjoy wonderful views of pine-covered mountains and centuries-old thatch-roofed farmhouses.

Day 7 Takayama - Kyoto

A journey by train this morning takes us to Nagoya, where we board one of Japan's famous shinkansen, a Bullet Train, bound for Kyoto.

We'll start the sightseeing as soon as we arrive in historic Kyoto. It is a city filled with fascinating temples, ancient buildings and picturesque gardens. We’ll start with a visit to Nijo Castle, built in 1603 for the first Shogun of the Edo Period. It’s beautiful gardens are surrounded by imposing stone walls, but step inside the castle to navigate through walkways that “chirp” with each step and tatami rooms are decorated with intricate paintings and sliding doors.

The next stop is Sanjusangendo, the longest wooden temple in Japan. It’s what’s inside that is truly captivating. Walk through the large wooden doors and be wowed 1001 statues of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. It is thought that if you look closely at the faces, you will find one that resembles the person you long to meet.

This evening is free for you to explore at leisure. If you’re looking to see authentic Geiko, head to the Gion district at dusk for best chance to see these beautifully dressed women.

Day 8 Kyoto

We’ll discover even more of Kyoto’s sights today. We start by heading to the beautiful district of Arashiyama today, where a rickshaw ride through the town and into a bamboo forest promises to be a serene experience. Sit back and enjoy the sight of the towering stalks swaying gently in the wind and casting shadows on the path.

We’ll then head to Kinkakuji – the Golden pavilion. In the grounds of the Rokuon-ji temple, overlooking a large pond with orange koi swimming in its waters, is the unique three-storey structure. The top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf and glisten in the sunlight. Follow the path through the gardens, past the pavilion, towards statues where visitors throw coins for luck.

A sushi-making demonstration promises to be a great experience as you learn the art of rolling the rice and creating mini masterpieces of raw fish (vegetarian options available). You’ll get to enjoy your dishes before we head to Nara this afternoon. This historic city is where we'll find the Todaiji Temple, one of the most famous in Japan, and the Deer Park with its hundreds of free-roaming deer - you can even purchase crackers to feed them. We'll also visit Kasuga Taisha, the most celebrated shrine in Nara.

Day 9 Kyoto - at Leisure

Today has been left free for you to explore Kyoto at leisure. You might choose to head to the Kyoto Tower for panoramic views of the city, and see the Gion district where you partake in a tea ceremony. Kyoto is the birthplace of this traditional ceremony and there are a number of places which offer you a chance to experience it for yourself.

Perhaps you’d like to visit more of the unique temples and shrines in the area – at Fushimi Inari and find not one or two, but thousands of vermilion torii gates that sit close together and straddle a network of paths that lead into the forest at the base of Mount Inari.

Or perhaps, if you fancy a spot of retail therapy, head to Downtown Kyoto where you’ll find department stores and a wonderful food market. In the evening, make sure you venture to Kyoto station, an unspoken highlight of the city and home to an array of restaurants, galleries, a sky garden and a staircase with crowd-pleasing illuminations.

Day 10 Kyoto - Hiroshima

Today, we’ll take another shinkansen and venture south to Hiroshima. On arrival, we’ll take a short ferry ride to Miyajima Island where you can see deer roaming around the area. Unsurprisingly, it’s not the wildlife that it the big draw to this island – here is where you will find the “floating” o-torii gate of the Itsukushima Shrine. Both the shrine and the gate are unique for being built over water and therefore seeming to float during high tide – a time at which they are perhaps their most beautiful. We’ll enjoy some free time here – why not take the short walk up to the Daishoin temple, have a drink in the islands brewery or simply sit on the waterfront and take in the tranquil surroundings.

Back on the mainland, Hiroshima is infamous as the target of the first-ever atomic bomb, dropped by the US at the end of the Second World War. The Atomic Bomb Dome stood at the epicentre of the devastating bomb blast and has been preserved as a lasting reminder of that tragic event. You'll visit the remains of this building and walk through the Peace Memorial Park, an area of open land dedicated to the promotion of world peace to see the Cenotaph for the victims of the Atomic Bomb, and visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.

Day 11 Hiroshima - Osaka

Osaka is the final destination of your tour, so take this morning to relax and admire the view of Japan from the window of your shinkansen. On arrival in the city, we’ll visit the Floating Garden Observatory at the top of the Umeda Sky Building – it’s the perfect stop for lunch, whether you choose to stay at the top and enjoy the incredible views across the city, or head to the lower floor where a food court has been designed to recreate the atmosphere of the city in the early 12th century. Our last stop is Osaka Castle surrounded by a moat and lush gardens, this five-storey castle has a history dating back more than 400 years, a museum spread across each floor details its past and cultural significance. Take an elevator or the stairs to the top floor which provides even more wonderful views of Osaka.

Day 12 Osaka - UK

Has anyone done this tour with Riviera? If so do you have any helpful tips in any areas that we might not be aware of. A couple of things I would like to know:- what type of plugs do they use? What is the average price of a meal out ? What is the price of a pint of beer? are there any customs that are really taboo for visitors etc. Many thanks in advance

We are on the verge of booking with Riviera for a tour next April. How did you rate them as a company? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Japan: Land of the Rising Sun

13 days | an onsen-soaking, sake-sipping, bullet train-zipping tour.

riviera travel japan land of the rising sun

This 13-day tour of Japan will introduce you to the cultures – old and new – that define this small but influential archipelago. Beginning in tech-mecca Tokyo and finishing with three nights in Kyoto, this immersive tour will also introduce you to lesser-known cities through Japan’s centre and southern reaches. Discover scenic beauty on the Hakone ropeway, sip the best sake in Takayama, find out about the Hiroshima of today and wonder at the floating torii gate of Miyajima. You’ll have a local to guide you through these lesser-known destinations and reveal layers of culture and history.

Trip overview

  • Soar high above Lake Ashi and (on a clear day) get a glimpse of glorious Mt Fuji on a ride on the Hakone ropeway.
  • Be impressed by the efficiency and ultra modernity of Japan’s bullet trains as you zip from place to place.
  • Explore traditional Japanese culture in Edo-period Takayama and visit a folk village, tour a 600-year-old market and a enjoy a sake brewery tasting.
  • Visit the Peace Park for moving insight into the devastation of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima, then cruise to peaceful Miyajima Island where wild deer roam the streets.
  • Finish your tour with three nights in Kyoto, Japan’s cultural capital and home to literally thousands of temples, the Gion District where Geisha entertain the wealthy elite and renowned Kyoto sushi.
  • We think Japan is best explored on foot, so this tour involves lots of walking. Please ensure you bring sturdy walking shoes and comfortable clothes. To make the most of the trip, it's best if you have at least a moderate level of fitness.
  • In some destinations you may be staying in a minshuku, which is a Japanese-style inn. It’s a great taste of tradition, however not everyone finds futon mattresses on the tatami-mat floor, small bathrooms and close proximity to other guests comfortable. Read more about it in the ‘Accommodation’ section of the Essential Trip Information. For some departures, we may swap them with hotels or vice versa depending on seasonal availability. Please consult your booking agent if you need more details.
  • Be prepared to pack light and smart for this trip as you'll be required to carry your own luggage between train stations and to hotels, which can include going up and down multiple flights of stairs in crowded areas.

Konnichiwa! Welcome to Japan. Bursting with contemporary urban culture, there are many sides of Tokyo to explore, from fascinating museums and world-class shopping, to neighbourhood backstreets lined with hole in the wall eateries and bars. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm tonight. You can arrive at any time during the day, as there are no activities planned until this important meeting. Afterwards, join your new travel companions for an optional dinner at a local restaurant.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Tokyo - Hama Rikyu Garden - JPY300
  • Tokyo - Sumida Hokusai Museum - JPY400
  • Tokyo - Tokyo National Museum - JPY1000
  • Tokyo - Ueno Park - Free

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

As we depart Tokyo tomorrow, we highly recommend arriving a few days earlier to enjoy more of what this amazing city has to offer.

Enjoy a free morning in Tokyo. Mid afternoon, catch a local train to Nikko. Japanese trains are a quintessential experience and one of the best insights into culture (and efficiency!) of the country. Enjoy shopping for snacks or bento box at the train station or simple snacks are available for purchasing on board too. Arrive in Nikko late afternoon and you'll stay in a small inn tonight with shared facilities.

  • Minshuku (Japanese Inn) (1 night)

Your travel time today is approximately 3 hours

You have a full day to explore Nikko today, an ancient town overflowing with beautiful shrines and temples. A number of shrines here are World Heritage Sites and the town is surrounded with lush mountainous nature. You'll visit Toshugu Shrine, a resting place of a Tokugawa shogun who was one of the most powerful rulers of the country. The opulent shrine contrasts with the traditional minimalist style commonly used throughout Japan. Every corner of this monument is covered in intricate gold leaf, lacquer work, paintings and patterns. Here you can also visit the Nikko Toshogu Museum of Art at the back of the temple complex (extra entrance fee apply). This 1920s mansion has a beautiful collections of sliding doors and screens decorated by the best Japanese painters of the day. In your free time, you can pay a visit to the red-lacquered Shin-kyō bridge, one of the town’s most famous landmarks, and the Buddhist temple of Rinnō-ji, home to fearsome statues and an elegant garden. Or you may prefer time exploring Nikko’s beautiful natural setting with a visit to Chuzenji Lake and Kegon Falls. Kanmangafuchi Abyss is another highlight in Nikko that your leader will take you to visit, where you'll see about 70 Jizo Buddhas looking out to the river.

  • Nikko - Toshogu Shrine
  • Nikko - Bus to Chuzenji Lake (return) - JPY2500
  • Nikko - Imperial Villa - JPY600

Leaving Nikko, you'll have a long travel day today to our next destination - Hakone. Travel by local train followed by two shikansen bullet trains and finally a bus. Phew! Total travel time can vary depending on the connections, but we will usually arrive by mid afternoon. The journey is certainly worth it as Hakone is a scenic hot-springs resort in the foothills of Mt Fuji.  You’ll be staying at a family run ryokan tonight, with tatami-mat rooms, shared bathroom facilities and a lovely outdoor hot-spring onsen.

  • Hakone - public onsen

As you travel on public transport for the next few days, we'll forward your big luggage to Takayama while you take a smaller bag with you to Hakone. 1 x piece of luggage is included in our luggage forwarding service. If you have extra luggage you'd like to be forwarded from Nikko to Takayama, the cost will be about 1800-2300 JPY depending on the size. Your Leader will be able to advise the exact amount whilst on your trip. Your travel time is approximately 3-4 hours today.

This morning, hop on a boat across Ashinoko Lake and then tride the Hakone ropeway cable car to the top of the surrounding mountains. The area around the lake offers plenty of stunning views, and you may even catch a glimpse of Mt Fuji in the distance if weather conditions are clear. The afternoon is free to further explore Hakone’s spectacular mountain scenery and volcanic sites. Perhaps visit the boiling sulphur springs of Owakudani, or Hakone Jinja Shrine with its red torii gate rising from the shore of Ashinoko Lake. Or go for a walk through the hills of the famed grassland ecosystem of Sengokuhara. There’s also a great collection of art at the Hakone Open-Air Museum and the Pola Museum of Art, an eclectic mix that includes work by the likes of Renoir, Monet, Picasso, Van Gogh, Cézanne and Gallé. Not what you would expect to find in a small Japanese town, right?

  • Hakone - Cable car/Ropeway
  • Hakone - Lake Ashinoko boat cruise
  • Hakone - Open-Air Museum - JPY1600
  • Hakone - Checkpoint Museum - JPY500
  • Hakone - Onsen (public hot spring bath) - JPY1500

Travel by a local train first then a shikansen towards Takayama in alpine Gifu Prefecture today. You’ll reach speeds of 270 kilometres per hour and it will take around 4 hours to get there in total. Takayama is a charming Edo period town located in the Japanese alps, famous for its traditional inns, sake breweries and the Hida Folk Village. The latter is your first stop, an outdoor museum where the traditional thatched-roof architecture unique to the area has been relocated in a delightful mountain setting in an effort to preserve traditional Japanese culture. Discover the techniques used to build farmhouses that could withstand fierce winters and long periods of isolation due to snow-closed roads. The thick thatching kept in warmth and the roofs were angled so as to minimise snow build-up. Each house is like its own self-contained museum, with displays of personal items and traditional tools. Your included dinner tonight will give you the chance to taste some of Takayama’s famous signature dishes.

  • Takayama - Hida Folk Village

Enjoy a typical local breakfast this morning at the ryokan before our visit to the morning market. Gifu prefecture is known to produce many fine high-altitude vegetables, and these markets have been held for over 600 years. Browse the stalls of seasonal vegetables brought in from the surrounding countryside, set up by local farm women from 6am every morning. Look out for the unique local style of pickles, the bags of miso wrapped in leaves, Genkotsu ame (soy bean candy), preserved fish, spices, and the delicious marshmallow treat of owara tamaten. The alpine climate and crystal clear mountain waters are perfect for creating sake, so you'll also visit a local brewery for a taste of the region's prized signature drop later today. The rest of the day is free for you to explore this delightful little town.Takayama is also very famous for Hida beef. Don't miss the opportunity to try some of the country’s best while you're in town for lunch or today.

  • Takayama - Market visit
  • Takayama - Sake brewery tasting
  • Takayama - Festival Float Museum - JPY1000
  • Takayama - Kusakabe Traditional House - JPY1000
  • Takayama - Bike hire (per day) - JPY1000
  • Takayama - Showa Museum - JPY1000
  • Takayama - Takayama Jinya Building - JPY440

Time to leave Takayama and travel by express train and shinkansen (approximately 5 hours) to Hiroshima. Depending on arrival times, we will either visit Hiroshima’s Peace Park this afternoon or tomorrow morning. The Genbaku (A-Bomb) Dome and Peace Memorial Museum stand testament to the fateful day in August 1945 when Hiroshima was chosen as target for the first ever wartime use of the atomic bomb. The dome was just metres from where the bomb detonated so it was able to retain its shape and the fact that it looks almost exactly as it did after the bombing has made it an enduring symbol of peace. The memorial park serves the same purpose, and has museums, memorials and monuments dedicated to the memory of victims. This evening, maybe try one of the city’s signature dishes for dinner – okonomiyaki, a savoury pancake of egg, cabbage, soba noodles, and meat or seafood. Our accommodation tonight will either be a simple ryokan or hotel.

  • Hiroshima - Peace Park & A - Bomb Dome
  • Hiroshima - Peace Museum

Today you'll make your way to the nearby island of Miyajima with its famous 'floating' torii gate. You might like to further explore the island by climbing to the top of Mt Miyajima (or hopping on the cable car instead) for 360-degree views of the Inland Sea. Keep your eyes out for inquisitive and hungry deer that roam the streets. You have the rest of the day free to enjoy some of the other sites in this very welcoming and pleasant city. You could stop by the magnificent five-storied Hiroshima Castle, which originally dates from the 1590s. It was destroyed by the bomb but reconstructed in all its glory in the 1950s, and now holds an informative museum. The wonderful Shukkeien Garden, with its graceful teahouses and waterfalls, is also a perfect place to decompress on a break from sightseeing. For something a bit louder, there are local baseball and soccer teams (if the day is right), or endless shopping choices. Ask your leader for other tips and suggestions as there is plenty to see and do.

  • Hiroshima - Miyajima Island
  • Miyajima - Itsukushima-jinja Shrine - JPY300

Leave Hiroshima today and head to Japan’s most impressive samurai castle at Himeji by shinkansen (approximately 1 hour). The building, which has survived earthquakes and war since the mid-16th century, was restored to its full glory in 2015. The moats, baileys, towers and walled alleyways were ingeniously designed to trick attackers – perhaps so intimidatingly that they were never in fact tested. Explore the castle that was once home to over 10,000 samurai families and look out over the castle grounds and the city below from the seventh floor. Hop back on the shinkansen for the 1 hour train trip to Kyoto. Originally founded as Heian-kyo (literally “tranquillity and peace capital”) by Emperor Kammu in 794, Kyoto had its golden age during the imperial court's heyday from 794 to 1185. Kyoto was the capital of Japan for over 1,000 years (the name means “Capital City”) but the emperor and government are now located in Tokyo. With over 2,000 temples, shrines and gardens, Kyoto is a great place to get lost in. Your leader will take you on an orientation walk on arrival to get your bearings and you may like to spend some further time getting acquainted with Kyoto by wandering through its historical streets lined with traditional machiya houses. Stay in a ryokan or simple hotel during our time here.

  • Himeji - Himeji Castle

With its many cultural landmarks and historical sites, and the abundance of traditional arts and literature, Kyoto is regarded as the cultural heart of Japan. Your tour leader will take you to visit two of the best temples this morning. Afterwards, it's your free time to explore this charming ancient capital. You will have almost one and half free days here to exploreand there is a lot to see and experience here. Your tour leader will be able to help you with making the most out of your time.

Fushimi Inari is definitely one of the most photographed shrines in Japan. For the more active, hiking up the mountain following the red torri gates is a great way to enjoy the expansive forest on the shrine’s grounds and views of the city below. Otherwise, maybe head off to Arashiyama to enjoy a wander through the Sagano bamboo forest, or cycle along the Kamo River. Another great stop is the architecturally impressive Higashi Honganji Temple and the almost surreal Sanjusangendo, home to 1,001 statues of Kannon, or the Nishiki food market.

A gentle stroll through Kyoto's eastern hills along the ‘Path of Philosophy’ that links Ginkaku-ji, the Temple of the Silver Pavilion, with Nanzen-ji Temple is also recommended. This walk can be extended south through the well-preserved ‘old town’ areas to Kiyomizu-dera (Temple of Clear Water) with its famous viewing platform. Also recommended, for those visiting in spring, is a visit to the theatre for a presentation of Miyako Odori (Cherry Blossom Dance) performed by elaborately dressed maiko (apprentice geisha), or a visit to the extravagantly decorated Kinkakuji Temple, immortalised in Yukio Mishima’s novel “The Golden Pavilion”.

On one of the evenings, your leader will take you on a stroll through Gion, Kyoto's famous Geisha district. Even today you can observe the age-old tradition of geisha as they head out to perform dances and song for members of the wealthy elite in small teahouses tucked away in tiny back streets.

  • Hotel (2 nights)
  • Kyoto - Temple/Shrine entrance (2)
  • Kyoto - Gion District walk
  • Kyoto - Bike hire (per day) from - JPY1200
  • Kyoto - Sanjusangendo Temple - JPY600
  • Kyoto - Kiyomizu-dera - JPY400
  • Kyoto - Tea Ceremony with Maiko/Geisha - JPY14300
  • Kyoto - Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) - JPY500

You arrive at the airport for your overnight direct flight to Tokyo.

This evening we will have a welcome drinks reception and evening meal to get to know each other better.

This morning we travel to Hiroshima on Japan’s iconic gleaming white bullet train. With reclining seats, plenty of legroom, air conditioned comfort and speeds up to 189 mph, this is an incomparable way to travel. Arriving at lunchtime, there’s a sobering reminder of the horrors of war this morning as we visit Hiroshima’s Peace Park and museum, displaying the remains of the only building to survive the atomic bomb blast of August 1945. The city has been completely rebuilt and there are no signs left of the devastation of that fateful day. Returning to Hiroshima, we stay for two nights at the four-star RIHGA Royal Hotel, with breakfast.

Today we make our way to one of the country’s most distinctive views on the nearby small island of Miyajima. A huge red ‘Torii’ gate sits just offshore; widely celebrated, at high tide it appears to float between the sea and sky. This popular little island is easy to explore on foot. It has a relaxed holiday atmosphere, lots of interesting shops and a covered market. Yet you may notice a small digital counter indicating the number of days since the last atomic test – it’s surprisingly recent. Your afternoon is at leisure to experience this charming city.

Japan: Land of the Rising sun

Japan - an ancient culture of emperors, fierce shoguns, samurais and brutal martial arts. Yet it’s also a place of gentle geishas, colourful kimonos, exquisite garden design and Zen Buddhism. How did a country so deeply rooted in such diverse heritage become one of the most modern and advanced economies on the planet? Pondering such questions is what makes a trip to Japan so incredibly rewarding. Having travelled there once, you’ll feel almost hypnotically drawn back to this truly enigmatic country.

Japan’s roots lie in an ancient feudal culture, with many customs from these times still pervading modern society. The Portuguese and Jesuit missionaries arrived in the 16th century and by all accounts, they were initially treated well, mainly because the Japanese were impressed with their new technology – firearms. Despite trading together successfully for nearly a century, Christianity and western ideas were deemed to be undermining the social order and the Portuguese were expelled. All contact with outsiders was banned for over 200 years. The only country on earth to have been so completely isolated from all external influences, Japanese art and culture developed in its own unique way, until pressure from the US finally broke down the barriers in the 1850’s.

It’s this unique development of its culture which makes Japan so utterly fascinating today. Inevitably, we harbour preconceptions about its complex etiquette, but you need not worry! The Japanese are a truly welcoming people and allowances are made for us ‘strange’ foreigners! Our tour is designed so you not only see the best of Japan, but come home having started to understand it.

Our tour covers three of Japan's capitals, both past and present. You’ll ride on a high speed bullet train past iconic Mt. Fuji, one of the most instantly recognisable places on the planet. You’ll have the option to stay at a typical Japanese inn, bathe in a hot spring, and see the spot where the first atom bomb was detonated. With longer stays in both Tokyo and Kyoto, you’ll have a unique opportunity to get right under the skin of this extraordinary country.

In Tokyo – the archetypal mega-city – you’ll see its most fascinating districts, including the shopping and entertainment mecca of Ginza. It might sometimes seem as if its entire thirteen million inhabitants are all simultaneously trying to get on the same metro train – but everything runs on time and everyone is faultlessly polite.

Kyoto, the capital city for over a thousand years - and still considered to be its cultural heart - has carefully retained far more of historical Japan than any other major city. With exquisite shrines, temples, Zen gardens and traditional handicrafts such as ceramics, lacquer-ware, calligraphy and woodblock prints, Kyoto is a treasure-trove waiting to be discovered. We have four nights here and a whole day free in the city, so you'll have plenty of time to explore to your heart's content. You might opt to spend an unforgettable night in a ‘Ryokan’, a typical Japanese inn. We also visit Nara, Japan’s first capital, dating back to the eighth century. Here, traditional culture first took root and it is famous for its great Buddhist monuments and time-honoured festivals. Hiroshima is forever destined to be synonymous with the world's first use of an atomic bomb. Your visit to the Peace Memorial Park and museum, with the shattered remains of the nearby dome marking the epicentre of the resultant blast, will be an unforgettable experience.

Japan, like Europe, has four very distinct and wonderful seasons. Winter can be very cold, but springtime, with pink cherry blossom hanging heavy on millions of trees, is considered a great time to visit. May and June are quieter and warmer, with flowers and plants in full bloom in countless gardens. July and August are the festival months, time of colourful processions, whilst autumn is breathtaking, with the vibrant red and orange hues of maple trees everywhere you look.

Japanese food is increasingly being rightfully recognised as one of the world’s great cuisines and it goes way beyond just sushi… with teppanyaki, teriyaki, sashimi, yakitori, udon noodles, and a huge variety of sake rice wine. Utilising the freshest possible ingredients cooked without oils, fats or butter, it is a revelation. Even the famous “bento box” packed lunches, available at any railway station, are wonderful to look at, very tasty and excellent value. Despite what you may have heard, restaurants in Japan are certainly no more expensive than at home.

So place preconceptions aside and visit Japan on the tour of a lifetime. Prepare for wonderful service, the world’s politest people and a true assault on the senses. Immerse yourself in this extraordinary culture of contrasts, where the neon lights and gadgetry of huge futuristic cities live side by side with thousand-year old ceremonies, shrines and hot spas.

Full Itinerary

Day 1: departure.

You arrive at the airport for your overnight direct flight to Tokyo.

Day 2: Arrival in Tokyo

On our arrival, we transfer to our hotel, the excellent four-star superior New Otani, for three nights with breakfast.

Day 3: Tokyo

Day 4: Tokyo

Day 5: Mount Fuji & Hakone

Day 6: Bullet Train

Returning to Hiroshima, we stay for two nights at the four-star superior Sheraton Hiroshima, with breakfast.

Day 7: Hiroshima

There’s a sobering reminder of the horrors of war this morning as we visit Hiroshima’s Peace Park and museum, displaying the remains of the only building to survive the atomic bomb blast of August 1945. The city has been completely rebuilt and there are no signs left of the devastation of that fateful day. Yet you may notice a small digital counter indicating the number of days since the last atomic test – it’s surprisingly recent. Your afternoon is at leisure to experience this charming city.

Day 8: Kyoto

Leaving Hiroshima by coach, we head towards the old imperial capital of Kyoto. En route we’ll visit the superb Korakuen garden at Okayama – built in 1700 and renowned as one of Japan’s most exquisite gardens, with lawns, lakes, wooden bridges and shrines and teahouses! We use good, centrally located four-star hotels for your four-night stay with breakfast in Kyoto: the Century Hotel or New Miyako Hotel.

Day 9: Kyoto

Day 10: Nara

Day 11: Free Day in Kyoto

You’re free today to explore and discover the many delights and attractions of Kyoto. There are still more enchanting temples to see - like the 15th century Silver Pavilion and the even older Eikando temple, marvels of architectural and garden design within an easy walk of each other along the charming Philosopher’s Path. Other delightful options are a lesson in origami, dressing as a geisha or learning to cook a typical Japanese meal. All of these unique experiences can be arranged by your tour manager during the tour or you can pre-book them – see our Personalise Your Holiday. These are a wonderful way to gain a deeper understanding of Japanese culture.

Tonight you also have the option of staying in a ryokan, a typical Japanese inn. You’ll sleep on a rolled out futon with tatami matting on the floor. You’ll also enjoy a traditional ‘kaiseki’ multi-course dinner. Beautifully prepared and served, it’s just as stunning to look at as it is to eat. Please see ‘Personalise Your Holiday’ section for details.

Day 12: Bullet Train

After a last free morning at leisure, we take our bullet train to Tokyo staying overnight at the four-star Excel Tokyu near the airport.

Day 13: Return Flight

We fly directly back to the UK, arriving later the same day, with memories of an incomparable tour full of the most extraordinary insights and experiences that Japan has to offer.

Why Tourists Should Be Prepared To Hold Onto Their Trash While In Japan

J apan has become increasingly popular with tourists and it's easy to see why. The country has several destinations that won't break the bank . Of course, Japan's vibrant culture and distinct culinary experiences are another draw. Nevertheless, there are societal differences that visitors should be aware of before they hop on a flight to the Land of the Rising Sun. For instance, you would be considered rude for tipping . Another thing to note: Japan famously has very few public trash cans.

In fact, it's the norm for citizens to carry their trash with them and dispose of it at home. So ingrained is this practice that litter in Japan is essentially non-existent. But given that the country is home to heavily-traveled cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hiroshima, you might be thinking, "Why the lack of trash bins?" For one, it's said that the high cost of public waste management is to blame. However, there's another sinister reason why trash cans are few and far between.

On March 20, 1995, Tokyo's subway system endured an attack orchestrated by AUM Shinrikyo. The Japanese cult released sarin, an odorless gas that affects the nervous system, on multiple trains. A 2020 study published in the scientific journal Plos One states that 13 people died and thousands of others were injured. As a safety precaution, Japan did away with a majority of their public trash cans shortly after this tragedy. Despite this, tourists should know that Japan is not entirely free of trash cans.

This Is Where Tourists Can Dispose Of Their Trash In Japan

Whether or not you're a tourist in Japan, it's inevitable to accumulate trash while you're out and about. That said, visitors can often find recycling bins next to vending machines. Note that vending machines are all the rage in Japan so it won't be too hard to stumble across one. The same can be said about convenience stores, which are famed for their superb offerings. 7-Eleven, for example, sells everything from bento boxes to fried chicken. Pop in, grab a delicious snack, and throw away your trash while you're at it. In addition, public parks are also known to have trash cans.

If you visit Japan, chowing down on street food like takoyaki, taiyaki, and more is a must. Make sure to eat your treat onsite at the vendor stall as there will be trash cans available. Keep in mind that it's not commonplace to eat while walking in Japan so it is discouraged to do so. Another word of advice: consider packing dog waste bags and a dispenser. While it might not be ideal, it is convenient. If you can't immediately find a garbage can, you can at least carry your trash mess-free in your bag or backpack until you do. If you don't find one while you're out, your hotel or Airbnb will surely have a trash can.

Trash Cans Remain A Point Of Contention In Japan

One spot where you likely won't be able to find trash cans in Japan, specifically in Tokyo, are in metro stations. The exception, per Japan News , is stations run by the East Japan Railway Co. Since 2020, several stations have done away with their public garbage cans due to safety concerns. Much to the chagrin of passengers, others, including Seibu Railway, did so because of misuse. Japan sorts waste into different categories and passengers were throwing away items incorrectly. In July 2023, Kyoto locals lamented the lack of trash cans in the Arashiyama district, citing an overflow of trash from tourists.

SoraNews24 reported that trash cans had been removed for this very reason. Rather than helping the issue, locals said the trash situation worsened. Junji Makino from the Arashiyama Hoshokai organization told the outlet that there was a solution to the problem, saying, "So keping Arashiyama clean is probably going to take extra efforts on both sides: more trash cans from the city government, and tourists also being prepared and committed to take what trash they can back with them."

That year, new SmaGO trash cans were introduced in Arashiyama and in Osaka. However, SmaGO is not your ordinary trash can. Amongst its incredible features, it notifies when it needs to be emptied via an app. Are you planning a visit to Japan soon? Check out these  gorgeous cities you have to visit that aren't Tokyo .
