Pinehurst No. 2

Farmers Insurance Open

Richy Werenski just made back-to-back holes-in-one at Torrey Pines (sort of)

Richy Werenski made a hole-in-one on one of the most scenic par 3s in all of golf on Thursday. And if that wasn’t cool enough, the 29-year-old PGA Tour pro accomplished something even rarer.

Werenski made an ace during the first round of the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open on the famed third hole at Torrey Pines South, which gave him back-to-back holes-in-one in the tournament. Sort of.

RELATED: Now THIS is the hole-in-one story to end all hole-in-one stories

You see, if you combine that with his hole-in-one on the course’s eighth hole during the final round of last year’s tournament (he played the back nine first that Sunday), that makes back-to-back aces in the same event. Like we said, sort of.

The biggest bummer for Werenski is that it appears the cameras weren’t rolling for his ace on Thursday. Hopefully, he got someone to take a photo. You’ll have to settle for this video of last year’s uño:

RELATED: Kid makes hole-in-one, mom goes absolutely nuts

As rare—and yes, odd—as Werenski’s feat is, it still doesn’t touch the three golfers who have made two aces in the same PGA Tour round. That distinction goes to Bill Wheldon at the 1955 Insurance City Open, Yusaku Miyazato in the 2006 Reno-Tahoe Open, and most recently, Brian Harman in the final round of the 2015 Barclays.

Sadly, Richy’s streak stopped at two aces when he only parred the eighth hole on Thursday. Still, he’s off to a great start to the tournament after a four-under 32 on the front nine. He just may have to buy a few drinks at the Torrey Pines clubhouse when he finishes his round. Again.

Richy Werenski claims maiden PGA Tour title at Barracuda Championship

Werenski's win gives him an invite to the PGA Championship, the opening major of the year, live from Thursday August 6 on Sky Sports

By Ali Stafford

Monday 3 August 2020 07:20, UK

Richy Werenski secured a last-minute invite to the PGA Championship by claiming his maiden PGA Tour victory at the Barracuda Championship.

Final scores

Barracuda Championship

Werenski birdied the last to finish a point ahead of overnight leader Troy Merritt at Tahoe Mountain Club, played under the modified Stableford format, where points are awarded based on scores made on each hole.

Eight points are awarded for an albatross, five for eagle, two for birdie and zero for par, while a point is subtracted for bogey and three are lost for double-bogeys or worse, with Werenski ending the week on 39 points.

"I feel like I've been playing well for the last couple months. But to get a win, that's huge," Werenski said. "I've got a couple seconds and everything, so this just helps my confidence a lot. Now I know I'm good enough."

Making his 100th PGA Tour appearance, Werenski reached the turn level-par for the day after bouncing back from bogeys at the first and sixth to birdie both par-threes on the front nine.

Werenski birdied the 12th and 14th and then holed out from the middle of the fairway for eagle at the par-four 16th, before rolling in a 15-foot birdie at the last to set the clubhouse target.

Merritt had led overnight and extended his advantage by opening with back-to-back birdies on the final day, before cancelling out a bogey at the sixth with a birdie at the eighth.

Thomas back to No 1 with win

The world No 153 had a 30-foot chance at the last start to snatch victory after parring his way through the back nine, only to leave his putt short to finish runner-up for the second year running.

Austria's Matthias Schwab made 13 points on the final day to finish in tied-third alongside Fabian Gomez, with Scott Stallings in a share of fifth and four points back with Robert Streb.

Ten birdies on Sunday saw Aaron Wise post the best round of the day and jump into eighth spot, while Ireland's Seamus Power finished a further point back in tied-ninth with Alex Noren and Emiliano Grillo.

Richy Werenski soars to first PGA Tour win at Barracuda Championship, thanks to an eagle

richy werenski pga tour status

Richy Werenski roared into the lead late at the Barracuda Championship, then held on for his first win on the PGA Tour.

For Troy Merritt, it was another year of runner-up status.

Werenski made an eagle on the par-4 No. 16, for +5 points, and then made a birdie on No. 18. for +2 points in the Modified Stableford scoring system.

That birdie helped him claim victory on Sunday at Old Greenwood golf course near Truckee.

Werenski, 28, who is getting married in December, finished with +39 points. It was his first win on the PGA Tour in his 100th start. He earned $630,000 and is the fifth consecutive  winner in the Barracuda to earn their first PGA Tour victory in the tournament.

The win earned Werenski 300 points in the FedEx Cup standings and propelled him to No. 34 there.

This wasn’t Werenski’s first time on the Barracuda Championship leaderboard, in 2017 he was defeated in a three-way playoff.

Troy Merritt finishes runner-up after holding the 54-hole lead/co-lead for the second consecutive year with +38 (+8/+11/+14/+5). Both Werenski and Merritt have earned spots in the 2020 U.S. Open.

Barracuda Championship:    No spectators leads to a much different feel on the course

Merritt held the lead after three rounds with +33 points, and he led or was tied for most of Sunday's final round. But he finished second again, with +38.

His 40-foot putt for a birdie on No. 18 was for +2 points and the win, but he left it about a foot short.

Matthias Schwab tied with Fabian Gomez, each with +37 points.

Werenski almost had an eagle on No. 12, getting a birdie there.

On No. 18, he lifted his shot over the trees and stopped short of a bunker.

He said for his birdie putt on No. 18, he just tried to stay in the moment.

"There was a lot going on, but I really just tried to stay in my pre-shot routine, focus on that as hard as I could and just fall in love with the speed of that putt and just kind of go through the motions. I did a pretty good job of that," Werenski, from West Palm Beach, Fla., said.

He had to sit and wait for Merritt to finish his round. Merritt was two groups behind.

"It was tough sitting out -- to make the birdie on 18, I kind of had to wait for Troy to finish, so it was kind of a nail biter, but I've never been in that position before, so it's all just experiences," Werenski said.

He said a bogey early in his round Sunday, on No. 1, helped snap his mental game back to where it should be.

Werenski earned 11 points over the last seven holes; he hit 38 of 56 fairways, 55 of 72

greens in regulation and needed 111 putts for the week

Werenski played college golf at Georgia Tech and turned pro in 2014.

His college roommate, Seth Reeves, won the Korn Ferry Tour event Sunday.

In early 2015, Werenski won the Golf Channel's reality show Big Break The Palm Beaches.

Merritt made 10 pars on Sunday, and three birdies and a bogey.

He had a microphone on during Sunday's round.

"I really like this format. I like the Stableford format. It gives me a chance to recover from the multitude of bogeys that I usually find. It was another fun week. Gave it my best, just one point short," Merritt said.

Barracuda notebook:    Lanto Griffin learned from one of the world's top golfers

He said wearing the microphone helped his temperament.

"Any time you're in the final group and you're in contention to win, you've got to keep things even keel," Merritt said. "It doesn't do any good to ponder over a poor shot or a bad break or a bad bounce or something like that. You've just got to keep pushing forward. Having that microphone on kept me in check a little bit, reminded me to just focus on the next one, do your best, and add them all up and just one point short."

When holding a 54-hole lead/co-lead, Merritt had converted for the win two of four times on the PGA Tour before Sunday.

He finished second in the Barracuda last year, to Collin Morikawa, after leading after the third round.

Merritt is in the field for the 2020 PGA Championship, which starts Thursday at Harding Park in San Francisco.

With the win, Werenski earned a spot in the field at the PGA Championship.

Scott Stallings and Robert Streb each had +35 points. Maverick McNealy had +34.

Aaron Wise made 10 birdies Sunday and finished at +33 points. This was his first time playing the Barracuda.
