What Is The Trek Route & Difficulty Level?

rajgad trek time

The trek begins from Gunjavane village and finishes at the Rajgad Fort, which is more than 1400m above sea level. This trek is ideal for those who are beginners & intermediates.

The trekkers have the option of choosing from  two distinct routes . The first one  (the most accessible)  starts at Pali village and takes you through a muddy field. From there, the hike takes you through wildflowers and forests.

The  most popular route  starts in  Gunjavane village and goes towards the Chor Darwaza.

The trek  distance  is about  5 kms one way  and can take around  3-3.5 hours  to reach the  top of the fort .

We recommend this trek in 2 days and camping overnight at the fort and enjoying the night sky.

The hike from this route is challenging, but it is rewarding. When you are at the summit, you’ll be able to observe the fort and the natural vegetation surrounding it. If you’re in the mood to do so, you could hike down and return the next day. If you start with a good breakfast, you’ll have the entire time to discover the region.

The trail is well laid out from the base village, and the chances of getting lost are significantly less. After 30-40 mins, you will reach the plateau, where you can get a clear view of the Rajgad fort. This section is mostly a wide and muddy trail.

From the plateau, you start a gradual ascent toward the fort. The distance is around 2-2.5 kms, and once you reach the top, it will take you to the entrance of the Chor Darwaza. This patch will take around 2.5 hours to reach as the entire stretch is a gradual climb to the entrance of the Chor Darwaza.

Rajgad Fort Details

The fort is divided into four significant sections: Padmavati Machi, Suvela Machi, Sanjeevani Machi, and Balekilla (the highest point of the fort).

It will take the remaining part of your day to explore the entire top of the fort; hence, camp overnight at the fort, Padmavati Machi being the best location to camp.

Padmavati Machi:  This part of the fort was the military/residential area. There is a temple, a garrison & a lake here.

Suvela Machi:  The most picturesque part of the fort, Suvela Machi, is a long, narrow strip from which you can get amazing views of the surrounding regions. There is also a Nedhe (naturally formed hole in the wall).

Ballekilla:  This is a small fort on top of the fort and the highest point. The entrance to this fort is called Mahadarwaza. From Ballekilla, you can get stunning views of the Torna, Tung, Sinhagad, and many other forts in the region.

Sanjeevani Machi:  It is 2.5 km long and has a double-fortified wall & an architectural marvel.

“All power is within you; you can do anything and everything.” – Swami Vivekananda. I could always sense a boundary around me and I did my best not to step over the line but eventually I did because that’s how much I thrive for adventures. Well, this time my thirst for adventure led me to the Rajgad Fort trek . Abhi, isn’t exploring nature is a kind of glory? Yeah, of course, after all, you always take those mini holidays when you feel restless and come to the lap of mother nature.

Situated around 65 kms from the Pune City, and standing at an elevation of 1400 meter above sea level, Rajgad Fort was the capital of the  Maratha Empire  for almost three decades.

With Pune city as my current city of residence, it’s pretty rare to witness stars in the sky. Pollution has taken away this beauty. I was missing the views of the stars which I used to witness while travelling in the Himalayan region. I wanted to experience a sky full of stars and that was the primary reason why I decided on the Rajgad Fort night trek.

How to reach Rajgad Fort Trek

Rajgad Fort Trek base village ( Pali/ Gunjavane ) is located around 208 kms from Mumbai and 65 kms from Pune. Mumbai and Pune are well connected to other parts of the country by railways and roadways. From Mumbai, one can catch a train or a bus to Pune. For train bookings visit IRCTC , for bus booking visit MakeMyTrip .

From Swargate bus stand(Pune) , one can catch a state transport bus directly for Gunjavane which is the base village of Rajgad Fort Trek. But the frequency of buses is quite low, so check accordingly. Another option is to take a bus going toward Velhe, get down at Margasani and try to hitchhike till Gunjavane (6.7 kms) or Pali (12.8 kms). Also, from Nasrapur bypass (falls en-route to Rajgad), minivans and jeeps ply to and from Gunjavane village. You can reach Nasrapur by any bus plying towards  Satara /Kolhapur/Bangalore.

How to reach Rajgad Fort Trek from Pune

What I will suggest is to hire a bike from Pune (INR 300-400) and explore Rajgad Fort on a road trip as the landscape views from Nasrapur all the way up to Gunjavane/Pali are quite spectacular. For bike rentals, you can compare prices at various bikes rental websites like Royal Brothers , wheelstreet , sabrentkaro , and rentrip .

Various trekking routes for Rajgad Fort Trek and their difficulty level

There are many trekking routes options available to reach the top of Rajgad Fort.

  • The Pali Darwaja route : It is the easiest route amongst all the routes to reach the Fort. The 3-4 kms long trail is known by name “ Raajmarg ” and connects the Dardige Wadi village to the fort. It generally takes around 2 hours to reach the top from this route. For beginners, I would highly recommend this route. Just type Pali Entrance gate no 2 on Gmaps to reach the exact location. In monsoon, there may be chances that you will only be able to take a bike till Dardige Wadi.

  • The Gunjavane route : It is the most popular route among the trekkers. These route passes through Chor Darwaja and further to the Padmavati Maachi and takes around 2-3 hours to reach the same. It is comparatively tougher when compared to the Pali route. There is another route from Gunjavane that enters the Rajgad fort through the Gunjavane Darwaja . Remember, this route is a bit tricky as it involves rock climbing. Just type Gunjavane on Gmaps to reach the base village.

My journey to Rajgad Fort Trek from Pune

Owing to experience a sky full of stars and the sunrise from Rajgad Fort top, I along with my few friends started from Pune around 3:00 am. With no moon in the sky helped our cause and we could see a drastic increase in the count of stars as we approached Nasrapur. The decrease in pollution and the intensity of the city lights were the prime reason we could experience this beauty.

On my previous visit to Rajgad Fort, I did a complete night trek (started from Pune around 9:00 PM) and took the Gunjavane route to reach the top. This time due to some personal reasons, I couldn’t start that early. Anyways, I wanted to experience reaching the fort through the Pali Darwaja route which is the easiest one.

With beautiful road journey amidst a sky full of stars, we made it to the base village around 5:00 am. Without wasting any time, we started with the trek keeping in view that we wanted to make it to the top before the sunrise. The trail is well marked via this route with just a few difficult patches to climb. A beginner in trekking will be able to make it to the top with just a bit effort.

It took us around one and a half around to make it to the top (just 10 minutes before sunrise time). The other best thing that came after stars were the twilight. What to say? I was spellbound by its beauty. It energized me, gave me strength and a message that all the efforts were worth it. And then came the beautiful sunrise!!

Compared to the other Forts in Maharashtra, it is one of the rare forts which has quite a few of structures still intact and one can spend 1-2 days to explore the fort to its fullest. The best time to visit the fort totally depends on an individual what exactly he wants to experience. In rainy months of  July, August and September , one can experience the foggy conditions and if lucky, the lush green surroundings. But one needs to be extra careful as the trail becomes quite slippery.

Stay and food options at Rajgad Fort trek

There is plenty to be explored on the Rajgad fort which cannot be done on a one-day trek, hence staying overnight would be a great option. Padmavati temple at the top can accommodate around 50 persons. There are a few small temples and caves where you can take a shelter. If you have your own tent, you can pitch it anywhere as safety is not an issue at all (a lot of people stay overnight at the fort on weekends).

I am never the same when I see the sunset on the other side of the world. Those wildflowers, that touch of mist on my skin, that ruff bricks of the fort that speaks with pride about the glory of Shivaji Maharaj and moreover the clouds that surrounded fort as if claiming it to be the most pious land where fighters from our Indian history gave their flesh and blood to create a legacy. Everything will remain in my heart. I am taking memories and leaving only footprints.

The terrain is not too difficult to climb and provides you with just the right amount of thrill as you climb to a really important fort for the state of Maharashtra.

Rajgad fort is known for its majesty and architectural marvel. It also has rich Maratha history attached to it, making the fort stand out among other forts in the western ghats. At an altitude of 4,514 ft above sea level, the Rajgad fort is located near Pune. The fort was initially built on the Murumb Devacha Dongar hill with a diameter of 40 km. The majestic size of the fort made it difficult for anyone to lay siege and capture it. However, the Marathas were successful in capturing the fort by making strategic decisions under the leadership of Chbhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Rajgad remained the capital of the Maratha empire and the residence of Shivaji Maharaj for a period of 26 long years, following which he shifted to Raigad. The fact that it was his residence is one of the reasons why the fort was built beautifully and with high precision.

The long stay by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj made the Rajgad fort the center of various historic events, including the birth of his son Rajaram 1 and the death of his queen Saibai. Moreover, Rajgad was one of the 17 forts that Shivaji Maharaj kept while signing the Treaty of Purandar in 1665.

The thrilling Rajgad fort trek will provide you with a picturesque view of the Sahyadri range and the majestic for itself. Nature and history enthusiast in you is bound to be pleased and mesmerized by this highly memorable trek . Along with the fort, you will also witness the fortification of three plateaus – Padmavati Machi, Suvela Machi, and Sanjivani Machi. These plateaus add to the architectural beauty of the fort. You will also encounter many water cisterns, temples, and ashrams along the way as you climb up to the Rajgad fort.

Once you reach the top, you can enjoy the view of surrounding forts, including Torna, Raigad, Lingana, Sinhagad, Purandar, Vajragad, Rohida, Mangalgad, Raireshwar, and the Mahabaleshwar mountain range. The high altitude of the fort provides you with an uninterrupted view of the surrounding hills and reservoirs, adding to the overall beauty of the trek. Some of the other notable marvels that can be witnessed from the top include Pratapgad, Makarandgad, Varandha ghat, Gopya ghat, Madhe ghat, Visapur, Tung, Raigad, Lohgad, and Tikona.

Overall, the beauty of the Rajgad fort trek lies in the thrilling journey to the top and admiring the majestic architecture of the same.

As you know, we are NOT a commercial money-monger group, but on the contrary, we make our own decisions, we plan our own treks, with experience, class and attitude, without causing any harm to nature !!
The route becomes slippery due to the scree (during Summer) and water (during Monsoon). You can also expect the trail to disappear during monsoon due to thick flora.

A Complete Guide to Torna Fort Trek

Torna Fort is the highest hill-fort in the Pune District. Situated at an altitude of 4,603 ft from sea level, it stands out among other forts in the western ghats of Maharashtra.

Because of the massive size of the fort, it is also called Prachandagad. This name is derived from Marathi which means Prachanda – massive and gad – a fort.

Torna fort was the first fort captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1646 when he was 16 years old. This is where the core of the Maratha empire was built. It has a great history as it has gone under many rulers.

In the 17th Century, the Mughal empire shortly gained control of the fort after Shivaji’s son Sambhaji got killed. The fort was renamed later by Aurangazeb (6th Mughal Emperor) as  Futulgaib  in recognition of the difficult battle of the Torna fort between Mughals and Marathas.

Trek to the Torna fort unfolds many exciting things. You trek along the beautiful flower beds, on the top, there are temples, water cisterns, Balekilla, 2 magnificent Machis, Zunjar Machi, and Budhla Machi, and a ridge connecting to Rajgad fort.

As stated by James Douglas “If Sinhagad is a Lion’s cave then Torna is an eagle’s nest, this fort truly stands for what his words.

The initial trail from the police station has a tar road. Continue on the same road until you reach a small bridge. After 5 minutes of a walk from here, you see a trail on your left moving towards the direction of the fort. This is where the actual trek begins.

| Note:  If you follow the cement road on your right, it directly takes you to the plateau where one can park the two-wheeler. This is recommended only if you are trekking in summer. The trekking trail from starting point to the plateau is a beautiful trail with many colorful flowers and small water streams. One has to trek through this setting.

The trail from here is straightforward. There is a trail marked all the way up to the plateau. There are also direction signs on the rocks in between. So the chance of getting lost is very less.

There are few historical places that are in ruins to see on this machi.

As you enter the Budhla machi through Konkan Darwaja you see Hattimaal buruj.

You descend down to the Hattimaal Buruj. There are rock-cut steps and railings are given for trekkers’ safety. This is one of the toughest sections. Negotiate it carefully.

Pro Tip: If you are trekking in monsoon season, Carry 30 to 40 ft rope along with you. This would help you negotiate the above-mentioned section.

This Radtondi Buruj has Chor Darwaja(Opening of Radtondi side) that leads to the Ridge of Torna-Rajgad fort. This section is very steep and a metal ladder is kept to descend down. This is also one of the toughest sections to negotiate. You proceed further only if you are going to cover Rajgad fort.

Pro Tip: The Ridge walk to the Rajgad fort is very beautiful. We recommend you to do both Torna and  Rajgad  together.

The right trail from the pinnacle takes you to the end of the Budhla machi. The end of Budhla machi is called as Cheetah Darwaja. You get one of the best views from that end.

Spend some time enjoying nature. Spot some of the famous forts like Rajgad, Raigad, Lingana and many more from there. It is always fun to identify peaks and forts if you are in a group of friends!

The descent is the same as you climbed up. From Budhla Machi get back to Mengai Devi temple. You can rest here for a while. From there follow the trail towards Kothi Darwaja, and to Velhe village.

➤ Best Season To Do The Torna Fort Trek

The best season to do this trek is from September to February. The beauty of the Sahyadris is best seen only after the monsoon season and up to summer.

From November to February, you get a clear view from the fort. This is the best time to spot some of the famous forts in the same region.

During the monsoon season, the trail becomes slippery. And you may not be able to explore anything on the fort due to the fog.

During summer, the temperature and humidity make it unbearable and you may not have a good trekking experience. However, you can do this as a night trek during the summer season with the help of a GPX file or a local guide.

This is an important area you need to work on.

Strength training is equally important to trek comfortably. Work on your glutes, calves and knees. Additionally, work on strengthening your core.

You must strengthen your core muscles. For strengthening your core muscles, holding a plank and it’s variations (elbow, side planks) are the best exercises to go about doing it.

Also, try these exercises for strength:

Target 4 sets of squats with 20 in each set.

– Squats (Mix it up with sumo squats)

– Lunges (Forward, backward and lateral lunges)

➤ Flexibility

Flexibility determines the amount of movement your bones can make in any direction around joints such as shoulders, elbows, hips and knees.

It is an aspect that will help you trek comfortably. Carrying a backpack, however-light, can become a strain. Stretching your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors and lower back muscles regularly, promotes relaxation in the tissues reducing the strain on your back.

If you can’t go out and jog because of time and space constraints, here’s a video you can use to work out indoors.
